GROOMING INDUSTRY

INNOVATION I

t is a wonder to me how much the pet grooming industry has changed since the first time I picked up a clipper. And so, I’ll begin my story there… The woman who trained me to groom used Oster A2 clippers. These clippers were similar to the clippers commonly used now, but to change

your blade, you had to use a screwdriver to remove the blade from the clipper and then screw the new blade down. Alternately, you could purchase multiple heads for the clipper and keep your most common blades attached to those heads, swapping the entire top section of the clipper every time you wanted

to use a different blade length. A5– style clippers with detachable blades were new on the scene and were a huge timesaver for groomers. Oster was the only brand of clippers for groomers to choose from. Open a catalog now, and you will find dozens of brands and styles of clippers—an array we never imagined possible. They even come in

As recently as the 1980’s, groomers had only a handful of shampoos and conditioners available to purchase, styles of pet brushes and combs were limited, and none of the major time– and labor–saving tools we depend on now were even invented.

pretty colors! When I get on this way–back train of thought, I feel like the parent who tells their child how they had to walk miles (uphill both ways) to school “back in the day.” And here is the truth; when my daughter wanted to become a pet groomer, I discouraged her. That was strange because I have treasured my grooming career, but after a lot of introspection, I realized I did not want my child to have to work as hard as I did when I was starting out. Then, once I realized how much easier this field is currently—thanks to innovations and inventions—I welcomed her with open arms. As recently as the 1980’s, groomers had only a handful of shampoos and conditioners available to purchase, styles of pet brushes and combs were limited, and none of the major time– and labor–saving tools we depend on now were even invented. Just during the span of my years grooming, the following tools have made the scene: • Electric & hydraulic grooming tables • High velocity dryers • Bathing systems • Purpose–built bathing tubs (stationary & electric) • Clipper Vacuum systems • Ergonomically-designed hand tools & anti–fatigue mats • Advanced restraint systems • Trimmers with adjustable blades • Specialty scissors (curved blades, chunkers, varieties in sizes & styles, and those for left– handed stylists) • Hair–repellant clothing • Dematting sprays • Wide variety of brands & types of shampoos, conditioners and other “liquid tools” • Wide blades & combs

This is a partial list; there is much more…from Happy Hoodies to protect a pet’s sensitive ears while being dried to more effective styles of combs, brushes, rakes and hand tools to solve a myriad of specific grooming problems. The last forty years have seen a huge advancement in the tools and products available to the modern–day groomer. Personal computers were not available back then, so there was no software to organize your schedule and maintain your business records. If you had a rare breed cross your table, you could not quickly look up grooming instructions or watch a YouTube video of an expert showing you what to do. Speaking of computers, groomer Bonnie Peregoy (Bonnie’s Dog Groom-

If you had a rare

ing, Washington, D.C.) said, “Personally, the internet made me aware that I was part of a national (global, even) community, and all the customer quirks that made me bonkers were universal. My joy at the discovery of The Groomers Lounge (the original internet hangout for groomers) felt like coming out of a dark closet where I had been toiling alone for decades.” Debi Hilley (A Cut Above, Albany, GA) expands on this: “I think the internet has allowed us to have more say in our equipment, too. We created groups that allow companies to do market research, and they have.” Cell phones were not invented, so you couldn’t text your customers, take pictures of their pets or call for clarification. 11 years and kept a roll of coins with me at all times so I could use a pay phone to get directions if I was lost. Groomers today can attend (Covid aside) seminars where they can see the latest and greatest tools and learn from top–notch educators. We can even attend educational events online, in the comfort of our own homes. Amazingly, we can also achieve grooming certifications via distance learning opportunities. For me, the introduction to thousands of groomers online gave me the gift of sharing ideas and skill sets that I would never have been able to access otherwise. I was taught old school– style; put the dirty dog on the table, brush it, trim it, then bathe it, dry it and groom it again. When I discovered the “wash them first” school of thought, I was shocked. But I gave it a spin and have never looked back. This

was just one work– and life–altering lesson I learned thanks to modern technology; there have been thousands more. There are many books for groomers now, from business guides to those detailing techniques and giving step–by–step breed instructions. We can buy DVDs and watch wildly skilled groomers show us how to correctly groom specific breeds and styles. These were things I could have only dreamed of when I was starting out. And, there is the magazine you are reading now, which once was nothing more than a few typed pages, folded and mailed to groomers like me who couldn’t wait for its monthly arrival. Suesan Watson (Pawparazzi Pet Salon, LTD, Hoffman Estates, IL) said, “I think what has changed in the grooming industry that stands out for me is that groomers today are groom-

ing with compassion instead of the mind set of ‘I am the groomer, you are the animal, I will win!’ I have learned that you can reform a mistreated dog in about three groomings with love and compassion instead of the ‘I will win’ attitude. You can win—with love!” I have noticed this welcome change as well. There was something else groomers didn’t have 30–40 years ago. Doodles! Cocker–Poodle mixes made a splash in the 90’s, but didn’t achieve the popularity currently seen in the mad Doodle trend. Depending on your feelings for these high–maintenance mixes, that could be a positive or negative industry trend. I can’t hardly wait to see what new developments will occur in our industry in the next decades. I plan to be here watching, learning and trying out every innovation. &

BUT WHY?

by Jonathan David

JONATHAN,

TAKE THE WHEEL:

Move Mobile MAKING THE

TO

T

o say that 2020 has been one for the books would definitely be an understatement. Like so many other businesses, countless grooming salons have suffered great losses due to the pandemic. As a result, many groomers have decided to roll with the punches and adapt to this changed world by taking the plunge to going mobile. The prospect of a completely different business model can be a scary venture, but fear not mighty groomer—technology is on your side! Today we have smartphones, apps and the power of social media to help make your dream a reality. Mobile grooming is a completely different ball game, but why is it so different from a salon? Living through a pandemic and dealing with the changes necessary to survive have certainly been quite a lesson. And one lesson I’ve

12

Groomer to Groomer • Vol 40 Ed 3 • March 2021

With close contact with other people being an obvious issue of the times, I decided the time to go mobile was upon me. learned first–hand is an old adage that we’ve all heard one time or another, “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade!” COVID–19 hit south Florida particularly hard in the early onset of the pandemic and the landscape of retail completely changed as a result. My business was only one third reliant on the grooming salon and the rest of the equation was a retail boutique. Even with governmentsponsored loans and grants, not all businesses were able to survive the shut down and resulting changes, and mine was no exception. In June of 2020, I had to make GroomertoGroomer.com

the difficult decision to close my salon that I spent the last 11 years of my life building. As difficult of a decision as it was, it was a necessary one to avoid going deep into a rabbit hole of mounting expenses with no light at the end of the tunnel. My instincts were correct; the pandemic raged on and many other retail businesses in the area struggled to stay afloat and some closed. I quickly had to make some changes to not only survive, but to keep servicing the clients that I had grown to love and cherish. With close contact with other people being an obvious issue of the times, I decided the time

to go mobile was upon me. It was time to “make lemonade” so to speak and take the show on the road. My situation was a little bit easier than completely starting from scratch. Fortunately, I had already purchased a mobile grooming van at the end of the prior year with the intention of expanding my salon business. So, I took the plunge into a new venture. This time though, it wasn’t Jesus taking the wheel—it was me! I had to completely rethink how I was going to rebrand myself as a mobile groomer. I had to learn a new set of rules and new ways to operate. There were some mistakes along the way, but luckily there are some amazing tools at our disposal to make that transition so much easier and to help us achieve our goals. The first thing I had to learn is that scheduling mobile appointments is nothing like taking appointments in the salon. In the salon, people come to you and you can be working through several grooms at the same time. While with mobile, you go to them, and it’s typically one pet at a time, unless you have an assistant. I also had to learn about routing. For me, that’s the worst part of mobile grooming. Wrapping my head around how to make my travel time less and schedule clients near one another around the same time coupled with their preferences of day or time was and is a daunting task, but it gets easier. There are several apps that can help you with the task of scheduling and routing, and once you get the hang of it, you can tighten up your route and make it more efficient. When you are mobile, you also have to have different policies in place to deal with situations like cancellations, no-shows—or rather nobody home when you arrive— and these policies need to be more stringent than usual salon policies. In my salon, if we had a last minute

cancellation, we almost always had a wait list to fill the space. With mobile grooming, once you build clientele, everyone is on a standing, rotating schedule and you don’t typically have single, random appointments on a wait list so having a clear cancellation or no–show fee is standard. Scheduling clients’ times was a tricky thing for me to sort out. I had to learn how long each service was really taking me in the mobile versus the salon. It’s a different setup and there was a learning curve for sure. Since many of my clients have multiple dogs, I decided that having an assistant was beneficial to making the most out of my day. Doing it this way allows us to work on two dogs at once and cut time. I will dry one while the second is being washed. And as I’m cutting and finishing the first, the second or third is ready or on its way to being ready for the trim. That way we can knock out two or three cuts in the time it might normally take to do one or two. I also decided to eliminate very large dogs or more difficult dogs from my schedule, saving time and maximizing my income. This is a personal choice for me and not everyone has to make that choice. Since I already started to build my mobile client list prior to COVID–19, the rest of my schedule was quickly filled with my salon clients who were now mobile clients. But to get the foundation, social media was a big part of that. Having a presence online today is as important as having a phone number. It allows people to find you, but it also gives you an opportunity to display your talents and show potential customers what you have to offer. You can use platforms like Facebook or Instagram to post pictures of your grooming. And, you can use

Snapchat or TikTok to make videos and cute advertisements to expand your exposure or reach your clients and keep them engaged, or to notify them of new products, services or changes to your business. I highly recommend creating accounts that are separate from your personal ones just for your business and dog-related posts. I take every opportunity to snap pictures of cute pets I groom or capture cute things they do with my phone to post and share on social media for the enjoyment of the pet owners, other groomers and sometimes just for myself. My point is that using social media as a tool and a way to engage customers, the public and potential clients is a great way to help build

your brand and make yourself more visible. Now that I’m mobile, I have more personal interaction directly with clients—mostly via text messaging—but one-on-one nonetheless. Sometimes difficult situations are blessings in disguise. For me, this change was one that I had thought about in the past but hadn’t really seriously thought about putting into action. It was a change that came about by circumstance, but it was the change that I absolutely needed. There are some aspects of having the salon that I did enjoy, but it was extremely time (and energy) consuming. I have found a new passion for grooming that I started to lose from being stuck in a routine that had become too repetitive. Being out

on the open road, constant changes in scenery and the ability to rearrange my schedule have been a relief for me, and I’m excited for this new chapter in my life. The flexibility is a plus, and the fact that mobile pricing is higher than salon pricing due to the convenience factor is another wonderful perk. The long and short of it is that, if you’re thinking about going mobile, now is one of the best times to do it. Mobile services have never been more in demand in so many industries, and striking while the iron is hot is always a key to success. Maybe it’s time to consider taking your business to the roads and taking the plunge. Happy grooming, and drive safely! &

t might be stating the obvious, but groomers work long hours on their feet. Stressing joints, using the same muscles repetitively and lifting heavy dogs often cause poor posture habits. Taking frequent breaks of walking and stretching are important to help maintain healthy work routines to support a healthy body. Lisa Ann Gold of Big Bear Yoga in Big Bear, California, says, “Whatever you physically do most every day, you need to do the opposite movements for your body’s health. If you are a pet groomer, that probably means you would normally stand facing the pet, holding your arms and hands in front of you. Focus on bringing your arms behind you, like you are spreading your ‘wings,’ opening your chest. Always move gently and listen to your body.” The practice of Yoga encompasses much more than just stretching, including breathing and relaxation exercises, which all provide relief for tired, over– worked bodies. Here is a short, 20–minute Yoga practice specifically for groomers to do at work. These are easy stretches to help with mobility, stress and tension relief. Always consult your doctor before GroomertoGroomer.com

starting a new fitness program, and never perform a stretch that is painful. If you have a preexisting condition, please consult a professional for feedback or modifications that are best for you. Gold emphasizes, “It is ideal to do these stretches every day, or even pick your favorite stretch to do a few times per day. Small but consistent practices are most important to producing change.” For these stretches you will need a little standing space, wall space and a stable chair. You can also use a leash and a grooming table (optional).

TO BEGIN: MOUNTAIN POSE (TADASANA) Start by standing in Mountain Pose, which means standing up straight. Make sure your feet are parallel, with your weight evenly distributed between right foot and left foot on the balls of your feet and the heels. Lift the kneecaps up and stack your hips over your ankles. Roll your shoulders back and down, stacking your shoulders over your hips. Try standing against a wall to check and see if you are standing like a mountain—up tall—or fall-

ing over like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. If it feels good to you, add some gentle neck stretches.

PRAYER HANDS

EAGLE POSE

FOR HANDS, WRISTS, ELBOWS AND SHOULDERS: PRAYER HANDS (ANJALI MUDRA) Hands and wrists are used heavily in the grooming profession. Start with interlacing your fingers and rolling your wrists around to the right and left. Next, keeping your fingers interlaced, flip your palms away from you and push your arms out in front of you to stretch the wrists. If it feels good, lift the arms up towards the ceiling. Bring your hands back down and press the palms together gently in “prayer” hands. Slide the hands together right and left, deepening the stretch in the wrists, elbows and shoulders. Next, keeping the elbows bent and hands gently pressed together, slowly rotate your fingers to point away from you like you would to dive into a swimming pool. Then, slowly rotate your fingers to point down to the floor. Repeat a few times and release your arms back to your sides.

FOR UPPER BACK AND SHOULDERS: EAGLE POSE ARMS (GARUDASANA) Still standing in Mountain Pose, start adding more movement into the shoulders by gently shrugging your shoulders a few times, with deep inhales and exhales. Next, gently circle your shoulders around. Once you feel your shoulders are warmed up, give yourself a big hug. Bring your forearms parallel, or even touching fingers or palms. This stretch opens up the upper back. Hold for a few breaths and repeat on the other side. Release the arms down and notice how your arms, back and shoulders feel.

Keep your head neutral; don’t drop your head backward. Gently focus on stretching up and spreading your chest wide. Relax your face muscles, jaw and throat. Take a few normal breaths, then slowly move out of the pose. If it feels good, do it one or two more times.

FOR SHOULDERS, ANKLES AND FEET: STANDING–ON–TOES POSE (PRAPADA STHANA) Coming back to Mountain Pose, start moving the feet gently by coming to half–toe, lifting one heel off the ground. Press into the ball of the foot to stretch the arch. Lower that heel down and switch to the other side. Go back and forth, pedaling the feet and ankles to prepare to balance. With an inhale, lift both heels off the ground, coming to a half–toe balance. Lift your arms overhead and breathe. Slowly lower your heels and arms back down. Keeping the shoulders rolling back and down, inhale and reach one arm overhead, stretching to the opposite side. Focus on reaching up more than reaching over. Imagine there is something up high you are trying to reach. Take a few breaths, carefully come out of the movement and repeat on the other side. You can try reaching both arms overhead, making a “V” shape with your arms. When using both arms, reach to one side and make a “C” shape with your body. Repeat by swaying to the other side. You can try this stretch using a dog leash or belt by holding it taut with both hands.

Place your hands shoulder–width apart and carefully step back, creating a right angle with your body. Keep your shoulders moving away from your ears so your neck is long and comfortable between your arms. Move your hips over your ankles. If your hamstrings are tight, you can gently bend your knees. You can do this spinal undulation standing, seated or on hands and knees

(in Yoga, this is called Table Pose, or Bharmanasana). If you are standing or seated, step the feet hip–width apart, bend the knees and place your hands on your thighs. Start with a long, flat back. Create the look of a cat hissing in dismay; tuck the tailbone under, curve the spine up and bring the chin to the chest. Next, create the look of a mooing cow with a sway back; bring the hips up, let the spine arch and bring the face and eyes upwards. Repeat this flowing movement back and forth with your breath and then carefully come up to standing.

FOR THIGHS, UPPER BACK, ARMS AND ABDOMINAL MUSCLES: GODDESS VICTORY SQUAT POSE (VIJAYA ASANA OR UTKATA KONASANA) Standing with feet further than hip–width apart, turn toes out and bend your knees. Engage the outer thighs and buttocks to draw your knees over your ankles. Keeping the shoulders pressing back and down, bring your arms up like a goal post, coming to a high squat. Slightly draw your abdominal muscles in. Hold for a few counts, then extend the legs and reach the arms overhead, stretching. Repeat a few times. When done, release the arms and heel–toe the feet together back to Mountain Pose.

FOR SHOULDERS, ELBOWS, CHEST, UPPER BACK, AND LEGS: ARCHER POSE (DHANURDHARA ASANA) Step one foot forward and one foot back, about three ft. apart. The front foot points straight ahead, while the back foot turns out slightly. Comfortably face the hips forward. Bend the front knee to stack on top of the ankle. Keep the back leg straight and strong. Reach both arms straight out in front of you, making fists facing each other. Note which foot is forward and keep the same arm as foot reaching forward, as if holding the grip of a bow. Draw the other hand back, as if

FOR ANKLES, CALVES, THIGHS, ARMS AND ABDOMINAL MUSCLES: CHAIR POSE (UTKATASANA) From Mountain Pose, simply bend your knees as if you were going to sit down in an imaginary chair. Create a zig–zag shape with your body. Hands can be on your hips, straight out in front of you or even overhead. Gently squeeze your thighs together and sit back a little deeper. Don’t go beyond a 90 degree bend at the knees. Gently engage your abdominal muscles. Relax any tension in the neck. To come out of the pose, lift up from your fingertips and draw yourself to standing with arms overhead, reaching up. Release your arms back down to your sides.

If it feels good, hold onto the seat of the chair or the back of the chair and hug your chest closer to the knee and thigh for a deeper stretch. Stay for a few breaths, and then slowly, using your arms to push your torso up, come back to standing. Repeat this movement a

Stand with your back against the wall, in Mountain Pose. Step your feet a few inches away from the wall and bend your knees slightly. Gently contract your abdominal muscles, tilt your tailbone down and press your lower back into the wall. You can take this deeper with Bent Knee Pelvic Tilt (Nikubjajanu Vastinirvlina) by stepping your feet a little further away from the

wall, bending your knees deeper and sliding down the wall a little bit more. After the Standing Pelvic Tilt, slide your back up the wall and lean heavy into the wall to relax. Alternatively, sit in a chair or, if possible, lie down. Take a few minutes to let go and just breathe. Practicing these poses every day or a few times a week will really benefit and provide relief to those over–used and stressed areas of the body commonly used by groomers. Try setting the alarm on your phone to remind you to take a break and stretch during the workday, or even schedule stretch breaks into your grooming appointment schedule! &

ow long does it take you to groom a Great Pyrenees that you only see every six months? What is your shampoo cost per bath? How much electricity are you using each time you dry a standard Poodle? If you don’t know these figures, how do you know what to charge? Now, imagine if you could have all of this information, almost instantly, at the tap of a button. Unfortunately, the grooming industry as a whole does not rely on technology or appreciate what it can really do for us. As the industry significantly evolves, many companies are developing programs geared specifically to the industry to aid in our efficiency. Large companies often rely on technology to increase profitability— especially in the hugely competitive market that we live in. As a business, we can change our profit quickly and significantly by improving things ever so slightly. For example, I hear people say that they only use 1 to 2 oz of shampoo for their bathing process, which they feel is extremely efficient. Now, let’s break that down: 1 to 2 oz is 30 to 60 ml of product. What if I told you that you could do the same bath with 5 ml? That is 83-91% savings! Multiply that savings by what you spend on your products and that all goes to your profit at the end of the year. The common response is, “I could never get my bathers to do that.” However, this is where technology could really help. Consider this scenario: As you buy products, you enter them into your computer, and then as you do baths, you input the amount of shampoo you use. By supplying the system with this data, the computer can now tell you when your bather is not tending to business. You can then hold them accountable with facts, not just feelings. This type of technology is very common in many industries like

the bar industry and has added a significant amount to their bottom line. How about if we kept track of things such as how long a dog stays with us during the day? How long it takes to check out? Or, even better, how long it takes to actually groom a certain dog? I always joked in the veterinary field that there are two separate timetables; the length of time a doctor thinks it takes him to do a procedure (always way shorter than reality) and the technician’s account of the time it takes. Which timetable do we base the next appointment on? As we progress to hourly wages vs commission, wouldn’t it be great for the employer as well as the employee to know exactly what is generated on an hourly or per-dog basis? It would also be very valuable in setting our fee schedule. I often hear of groomers not servic-

ing poodles/doodles because “they take way too long.” What if we calculated how long it actually takes, determined your desired hourly wage and then set the price accordingly? The issue is not that they take too long, but rather that they are not charging appropriately. Even that Great Pyrenees that comes in every six months shouldn’t bother you if you charge appropriately. Fifty dollars an hour for a Boxer or $50 an hour for a Great Pyrenees all pays equivalently. Computers can do that for us. A lot of grooming shops have computer systems that are great for scheduling and processing payments for the grooms; however, if that is all they are capable of, there is still some shopping around to do, because there are much more multifaceted systems out there. Is there a learning curve to using them? Absolutely! Anytime you take

on something new you have to change your operating agenda. Do not be afraid to assimilate to these ideas—it is a positive change! Two things need to occur: First, you must go through the process of learning a new way of conducting business. And second, you have to create accountability for everyone to follow through. Always expect resistance because it is a change and, unfortunately, people do not like change. My motto in my hospital was, “The only thing consistent here is change and we hope that it is all for the better.” Business is changing constantly, and if you are not changing with it, you will eventually be left in the dust by your competitors. Therefore, utilizing technology is a must to survive in this ever-changing business environment. In the veterinarian world, small clinics are being sucked up by Corporate America because it is more progressive and has learned to work on these small margins to increase profit. Do you know how much you or your employees generate per hour? Or what your profit is per dog? It may be time to consider incorporating a new computer system and even a business coach to help direct you. As a groomer, you work way too hard to not get paid for what you are worth. The time has come to work smarter not harder. Invest in technology, as it is a friend not a foe! & Dr. Cliff Faver graduated with a BS in Biology/BA in Chemistry before getting a Veterinary degree in 1987. TOO MUCH

CAT?

Turning to see a charging house

cat just as it lunges for your face, or finding yourself with a feline on its back with claws and teeth at the ready, daring you to grab its body, those are the moments you know you have too much cat to groom.

e have all started a groom and then realized we made a mistake. As soon as the owner has walked away, the cat transformed itself for battle with teeth, eighteen claws, growling, hissing and spitting all directly focused on you, the groomer. Since felines are both prey and predator animals, they come well equipped to not only to defend them-

32

Groomer to Groomer • Vol 40 Ed 3 • March 2021

selves, but to also provide the meat required for a healthy diet. These six to eight pounds of fluff are an adequate opponent to do real damage to the human body, while the twelve– to eighteen–plus–pounders are even more powerful with their jaws and paws. Cat bites can easily result in a serious infection, the loss of a finger, or worse. So, how do we prevent ourselves from getting in over our heads? Start-

GroomertoGroomer.com

ing with a temperament check at drop– off, clipper testing before any work is done, and knowing when and how to walk away are all key to keeping us safe as groomers. When I first meet a cat, I know the temperament within seconds. If you work in a salon or mobile unit you can use the cat’s position in the carrier to understand much about temperament. The cat that is hiding in

the back is obviously shy, the kitties in the middle tend to be compliant and the ones at the front, ready to get out, are aggressive. House–call groomers can also gain a lot of information from the first meeting with a cat. I instruct my clients to have their cat in an unused room before I arrive. I sit on the floor, outside the closed door, and run my fingers near the bottom of the door to get the feline’s attention. If the cat does not approach the door, it is usually a shy cat. If the feline is cautiously curious, it tends to be a compliant cat. The cats that are right at the door, ready to investigate, are usually the aggressive ones. Once I have the cat’s attention, I crack the door and offer my finger for the cat to smell. At that point I see the cat for the first time. I then slowly reach to pet the cat. This is the moment where I confirm my initial prediction about the cat’s temperament. Groomers usually get in trouble for one of three reasons: First, they do not know how to temperament test a cat at check–in. Second, they overestimate their skills or underestimate their ability. For both of those struggles, I would suggest you seek training from a feline–exclusive organization. Third, the groomer accurately assesses the temperament at check–in then the cat changes temperament or the aggression level is elevated at some point during the groom. These cats usually have a short attention span, and when you hit that “magical” time limit, a switch flips and you end up with a very angry cat. What do you do when you have too much cat? No matter the reason, at some point, we have all had more cat on our hands than we wanted. The good news is that most cats will run back into their open carrier when it is placed in front of them, then you can use a towel to close the door. If the cat has escaped your control and is hiding,

If the feline is cautiously curious, it tends to be a compliant cat. The cats that are right at the door, ready to investigate, are usually the aggressive ones.

wanting to fight or will not run into the carrier, there is no shame in asking the owner to retrieve their cat. Deciding to walk away from a groom is never a simple choice. There is the embarrassment of sending an unfinished cat home, the concern over the effect it will have on your business and reputation, anxiety over telling an owner their beloved kitty was more than you could safely groom and many other factors to consider. Damage control is always a concern for any professional or business owner. It is best to make the decision sooner than later when it comes to grooming a cat. If you take on too much cat, there is always the possibility of a serious injury or infection to the groomer. It is ideal to make the decision to send the cat home before you remove it from the carrier. After accepting a cat for grooming, starting with a nail trim can help you establish if this cat is too much. If you have any hesitation during the nail trim—keeping in mind that any negative behavior is likely to escalate during the groom—send the kitty home for your safety. If you have started shaving before you decide to send the cat home, things become more difficult. Obviously sending a half–shaved cat home is bad for business. Many times this can be prevented by clipper testing the cat. Simply running the side of your clippers, without a blade, over the cat’s back will let you know if the kitty will get angrier with shaving. If a cat does escalate during clipper testing, really consider your options before you start shaving. Obviously the best policy is not to accept more cat than you can handle at check–in. Understanding how to temperament test and accurately knowing your skill and ability level go a long way in preventing the start of a groom on a cat that is too much cat. &

REAL-LIFE

RECORDKEEPING FOR REAL-LIFE GROOMING

What does recordkeeping mean to a groomer? Your perspective of the pet grooming industry may determine your answer—and how you prioritize your recordkeeping.

I

n the case of some groomers, it’s keeping a client’s past grooming history. For others, thorough recordkeeping includes a client’s name and cell number. No matter your perception, there is a standard of records which, when well–maintained, allow the professional groomer the ability to complete a pet’s service safely, seamlessly and flawlessly. Mary brings her pet to XYZ Grooming Salon. She visited the salon several years earlier with a former pet who is now deceased. Molly, the groomer, checks the new dog in, gathers grooming instructions and lets Mary know to

return at 4:00 p.m. to retrieve her pet. During the course of the day, any of the following scenarios may happen: Mary’s new dog has loose bowel movements, Mary’s new dog exhibits signs of distress while drying, Mary’s new dog has a shaved area on the front leg which appears to be from a fairly recent vet visit, Mary’s dog has matting that will require a different style than Mary expects, Mary’s dog tries to bite the groomer when she retrieves the pet from the holding area, Mary’s dog has a medical issue which requires immediate medical attention, Mary’s dog has a medical issue which requires GroomertoGroomer.com

attention and a watchful eye from the staff at XYZ Grooming, Mary’s son returns to pick up the pet instead of Mary, Mary’s husband calls and asks for a different haircut than the groomer discussed with Mary, Mary’s dog appears to have been groomed at home and has a wound on his face, Mary’s dog coughs…and the list goes on. Unfortunately, the scenes above are played out at many grooming salons every day. Having professional records which support care and communication are critical to providing professional pet services. • Current veterinarian • Pre–existing or physical conditions • Behavior history • Previous grooming experiences and phobias • Known sensitivities • Notations communicated to the owner any time the groomer notices a condition present which is outside a healthy, normal state (e.g., hot spot or lameness)

OTHER RECORDS This category includes any other items which impact the past, present or future grooming services of the pet. Oftentimes, these are the most difficult records to store and the last to be documented, but their presence is the most vital when a scenario outside of “normal” presents itself. Think of these as the archives of

your grooming service; what would you save for history? • Photos (before and after) • Video archives (Live video of a service if there is ever a serious question can prove invaluable.) • Written communication to the owner of the pet regarding issues, recommendations or suggestions (Email, text and even report cards all offer a viable form of communi– cation to the owner.) • Sales receipts (including additional services and the price of the grooming service) • Release forms (This is an entire segment all to itself, but can include general liability, matted release, senior, puppy, behavior and safety language, and any other sort of release which indicates that the client is informed about a circumstance surrounding their

pet’s grooming service.) • Grooming notes (Archive all relevant details in a clear and concise manner.) Let’s revisit Mary’s appointment with her dog. In each of the scenarios outlined in the original story, there is a record that could have been accessed to assist with the difficult situation. While each of the situations in the XYZ Grooming Salon saga may not be avoidable, having prior knowledge, the correct forms, information, releases, etc. would allow the groomer to feel more in control of the situation and have a better ability to alter his or her process or behavior. Recordkeeping is not always an exciting part of a groomer’s job, but is necessary for the safety and wellbeing of the pets we care for. Now, happy recording! &

JUST WHAT THE DOG-TOR ORDERED

2020 was a year that none of us will ever forget. As COVID-19 invaded our world, it caused the postponement and cancellation of grooming shows, seminars, trade shows and grooming competitions.

B

ut rather than simply canceling the shows and leaving attendees, competitors and vendors high and dry, many shows went virtual. Although it was not the same as being at a show in person, multitudes of groomers were eager to participate. With the need to connect with their fellow groom-

42

ers and experience some semblance of normalcy, virtual shows were just what the “dog–tor” ordered.

WHAT IS A VIRTUAL SHOW? These are events that are presented entirely online. It is a real change from the way groomers have always experienced industry shows,

GroomertoGroomer.com

yet in some ways, it is the same. You still get to attend fantastic seminars, watch exciting grooming competitions and enjoy shopping at the trade shows. Surprisingly, virtual shows have some unique advantages over in–person ones. Although grooming shows are held in many locations all across the

country, attending them was still prohibitive for some groomers who would have to travel long distances to get to a show site. Now, everyone can attend a virtual show from the comfort of their home or salon. You don’t have to take time off or close your business in order to attend. And, you don’t have to find a house sitter or arrange for someone to care for your pets. There are no travel, motel or meal expenses. In fact, some groomers said they saved so much money by attending virtually, that instead of going to their usual one or two shows a year, they registered and enjoyed all the online shows that were available to them.

If you have internet access, you can attend the virtual shows. After you register, you will receive an email with the show schedule and links to all the webinars.

HOW DOES IT WORK? If you have internet access, you can attend the virtual shows. After you register, you will receive an email with the show schedule and links to all the webinars. All the seminars are viewed through Zoom. You do not need to have a Zoom account, you simply click on the links you receive by email. Through the Zoom presentations you will have a VIP view of everything, and you won’t have any trouble hearing the presenter. Many of the speakers provide handouts for their seminars, you simply have to print them out. During the seminars, you can ask questions of the speaker and get an answer on the spot. You also get to interact with other attendees using the chat feature. Many of the speakers give out their email address and social media information so that you can contact them later if you have any additional questions. Continuing education is critically important to keep abreast of new and changing facets of the industry. Many certificate courses on topics such as hair and skin, safe handling techniques, hand–stripping and dog behavior were offered. By participating

in a seminar and then taking a short quiz at its conclusion, you can receive a personalized, framable certificate to display in your salon, on your website or on your social media pages. The grooming demonstration seminars are fabulous. Whether it is hand–stripping, Asian fusion, breed– specific trims or creative, you get to see the entire process. It’s truly like receiving a private lesson from the premier groomers of the world. Additionally, you see what tools and products the stylists use to achieve their finished results. With the “best seat in the house” you are treated to close–up views of every groom. Another great feature of virtual shows is the unlimited replay feature. At in–person shows, there are often four or five seminars held at the same time. That means you can only attend one of them. But at a virtual show, you can experience every seminar—one as it is being presented and the others later. Also, this feature allows you to re–watch any of the seminars as often as you wish up to a certain date.

GROOMING COMPETITIONS Grooming competitions are done a bit differently at a virtual show, but they are still very interesting and exciting to watch. Attendees get to observe the magnificent grooming skills of the competitors and see close–ups of the dogs as the grooms progress. Several groomers shared that the virtual GroomertoGroomer.com

shows have encouraged them to try their hand at competing because the shows have given them the ability to closely watch the stylists from start to finish and see how they produce their winning grooms.

SHOPPING Much to everyone’s delight, a trade show is held in conjunction with the seminars and grooming competitions. Just because it is not face to face doesn’t mean it’s not a spectacular event with bargains galore. Sponsor spotlights are held in between seminars. Through the spotlights, companies showcase their tools and products and give short demonstrations on how to use them. As always, the trade show pricing and special deals allow groomers to stock up on necessities, try new items and get lots of bargains. Here’s another great bonus: At in–person trade shows, you might not get to visit every booth, and as a result, you may not know about a great deal someone is offering. If you miss a live presentation at a virtual trade show, you can click on an exhibitor and instantly see the show specials that they have. Then you can shop at your convenience. Until we have in–person shows again, take advantage of the virtual shows. Enjoy the convenience and participate in the many benefits of learning, shopping and being together—it’s just what the “dog–tor” ordered! &

YOUR BUSINESS WITH E by David Sorbara e

Technology is everywhere. It’s evolving quickly and being increasingly ingrained in every aspect of our lives, from personal to professional. It continues to make our lives easier and more efficient, particularly when it comes to business. The grooming industry is no exception.

G

one are the days of heavy paper appointment books for groomers. There’s no longer a need to spend hours looking through filing cabinets and sticky notes to find vital customer information. With the right software, you don’t even have to waste precious time calling clients to remind them about their appointments anymore. There’s no doubt about it: technology has changed the grooming industry for good—and for the better. Specialized software is now available to help pet groomers run and manage their businesses more efficiently. Yet, many groomers still haven’t embraced this technology in their shops. They’re still doing things the old–fashioned way and losing

46

countless hours a week because of it. Software is enabling groomers to spend less time on administrative tasks so they can spend more time on the work that matters—grooming pets, building client relationships and growing their businesses.

DIGITAL CALENDAR Automating back–office tasks saves time, enhances efficiency and improves business. Take cloud–based calendars for example; moving your paper calendar to a digital calendar enables you to quickly add appointments into the calendar and add a wealth of important information, including the customer’s name, the pet’s name, the service requested, grooming notes and the pet’s breed. Because your digital calendar is

GroomertoGroomer.com

cloud–based, you can access it online on any device, anywhere in the world. Along with a lower cost, better data storage, greater security, and easier updates and tech support, cloud– based appointment books mean you don’t have to carry your paper calendar around everywhere in case someone calls to book an appointment. You’ll never overbook or double–book yourself with your calendar at your fingertips at all times.

CUSTOMER DATA Another benefit of entering your appointments into a digital calendar is that it allows you to store your customer data in an organized fashion where you can access it at any time. That means you’ll never have to search for paper

cards anymore. With just a few clicks, you’ll be able to search for and find the customer data you’re looking for. Most software for groomers includes client profiles with contact and personal details. Even more importantly, it contains valuable pet profiles that allow you to track important pet information you’ll need to look up for every appointment, like breed, size, temperament, allergies, behavioural issues, vet info and more.

AUTOMATED REMINDERS AND RECEIPTS Software not only helps you add and keep track of information digitally, but it also offers a wealth of automation that’s especially valuable to businesses. For example, most systems can automatically send your customers appointment reminders via text or email, which saves you valuable time and reduces no– shows. You won’t have to stay late every night making those calls. Most systems can also send automated receipts.

PAYMENT PROCESSING Grooming software also makes it easier for you to track and receive sales. With the right setup, you can use a payment processor directly through the software and even collect convenient contactless payments, which your customers will appreciate. Contactless payments speed up the checkout process, and they come in two main forms: credit cards and mobile wallets. If the card is equipped with contactless technology and your payment terminal includes near–field communication (NFC), your clients simply need to hold the card near the card reader to complete their transaction. While cash is not going to disappear overnight, it’s not everyone’s preferred payment method—and it pays to offer variety.

Most systems can automatically send your customers appointment reminders via text or email, which saves you valuable time and reduces no–shows. What makes you unique as a professional? What is your

MARKETING AUTOMATION

ONLINE BOOKINGS

On top of enabling you to run the administrative side of your pet grooming business more efficiently, software can also automate marketing. As you know, the more free marketing and advertising you can get as a local groomer, the better. With specialized software, you can set up marketing campaigns directly in the system to send automated texts or emails for birthdays, or to customers you haven’t seen in a while, and more. From welcome emails and automatic retention messaging and surveys, these types of automated marketing campaigns can help you build stronger relationships with clients to enhance loyalty, all with little work on your end. Just set up the campaign and forget it! You can even set up a customer loyalty program through some systems.

Another especially valuable benefit of software is the ability to connect the software to your website to enable online bookings. These days, people expect to be able to book appointments online quickly and hassle–free. Many do not want to call. They want to schedule their dog’s grooming the same way they order their lunch: online! Giving them the ability to book appointments online not only improves the customer experience, but also reduces the amount of time you have to spend tied to the phone, which means you can book more appointments throughout the day. Technology in the grooming industry is here, and it will soon become a staple in the sector as more groomers realize the positive impacts of automa-

tion on their businesses. Technology gives groomers the tools they need to succeed. It will help save you time, reduce your labor costs, increase your revenue and allow you to better understand your clients with valuable data. The question is: Will you get on board or fall behind? & David Sorbara is the founder and president of Barkley HQ, software for pet groomers. Dave has been in the point–of–sale industry for 13 years and loves helping small businesses grow. He has brought his knowledge and know–how of software and operations to the grooming industry for the past three years. David started Barkley HQ because he saw that groomers did not have specialized software to help them run their businesses effectively.

olden Retrievers are one of the most common breeds we see as professional groomers, but proper care of their coat is often undervalued. Many times these are seen as “easy” dogs that require a simple bath, blow–out and foot trim. This article will teach you how to turn your easy–money Goldens into head–turners with just a few additional steps. We will also go over how to remove the most undercoat possible—appeasing both yourself and the client. Oftentimes, before we get to the dreaded “Will you shave my double–coated dog?” the client has asked for “short-

er, shorter, shorter.” In our alternative job, as word sleuths, determining what clients actually mean, we can usually uncover that they want less hair in their homes. Instead of scissoring the outline shorter or trimming the top coat, think thinner, thinner, thinner and send them home with a dog that has had the undercoat removed thoroughly and properly. This is one of my favorite breeds to groom because a little goes a long way; the extra few minutes you invest have a huge impact on the total outcome! The preparation of this coat consisted of a bath, raking out the loose undercoat while conditioned, and a

thorough drying with a high–velocity dryer to blow the rest of the undercoat out. When drying a Golden, you want to lift the coat off the skin with the forced air, ensuring they are dried all the way through. Then, you can lay the coat back down with the dryer for a nice finish. This dog was also blow–dried with a heated dryer and a slicker brush to ensure she was free of loose undercoat before beginning this groom. Fig 1) Starting directly behind the occiput, use an undercoat rake and rake through the neck, back and sides of the dog. This will remove undercoat that the

force dryer was not able to blow out. Fig 2) Continue with your undercoat rake and rake down the sides of the neck onto the shoulders. As you do this, make sure you support the skin by holding it taut above the area where you are raking. Fig 3) One of the most common errors pet groomers make when grooming a Golden is on the pants area. Most of the time, groomers want to trim this to look like a rounded bloomer from pin bone to just above the hock. But what that shape does is create length on an already long dog. Instead, run your undercoat rake through the coat to thin out this area—from pin bone to just above the hock. This removes the bulky undercoat while preserving the natural shape and integrity of the pant. Fig 4) Because this breed gets a “cat” foot, do not scoop between the pads when shaving this area. You want

to leave a little support between the pads—if you don’t, the foot loses its cushioning and can flatten and spread out over time. Fig 5) To begin trimming the foot, start with a straight line right across the front of the foot at the toenails. Fig 6) The next two cuts should be a straight line on either side of the foot (outside and inside). These lines should be parallel—think of these first three cuts like you are beginning to make a box. Fig 7) Using straight shears, trim the loose hair around the toenails, inside and out. This is very fine, detailed work, but has a great impact on the overall outcome of the foot. If necessary, use a slicker brush to brush the hair from side to side around the nails to get all of the “sticky–outies.” Fig 8) Extend the “V” shape from the center of the paw pad out to reach the outside of the foot, just slightly. This step is crucial to separating the foot from the leg in the overall picture. Fig 9) Once the detailed work of

carving the toenails out is finished, use a slicker brush to brush the hair on top of the foot from the center out to one side, and cut everything outside the paw off. Then, repeat on the other side. These lines should be the same parallel lines you created in Fig 6. Fig 10) Once the shape of your foot is set and all hair lying outside of your imaginary box is cut, use thinning shears to blend the bulk of the hair on the top of the foot off. You are barely trimming length and simply “suggesting” the direction the hair should lay. You want to leave as much height as possible on top of the foot to create a nice, arched appearance. Fig 11) Gently blend the top of the foot into the sides and eventually wrap around into the bottom of the foot. Blend until all appears smooth. Fig 12) An example of a finished foot. Fig 13) Repeat the same steps on

the back feet. Fig 14) Once the back paws have been trimmed, comb everything on the pastern down and lightly blend across with thinning shears. Fig 15) Comb the pastern straight out and very lightly thin a crescent moon shape from hock toward pastern. This is often an area that is trimmed too short, or too aggressively. Very light, subtle trimming on this area makes all the difference in the world on the final outcome. Fig 16) An example of a trimmed pastern. Fig 17) The front leg furnishings should be trimmed off the ground so as not to drag, but should be trimmed to as close to a 45 degree angle as possible. Beginning at the elbow, grab all of the leg coat between your index and middle fingers and glide down the

hair until your fingertips are touching the back stopper pad and your fingers are at a 45 degree angle. Then, trim the hairs that fall between your fingers and the ground at that same angle. Fig 18) Example of a trimmed leg. The ears on Goldens are often the biggest “wow” factor for clients, when trimmed appropriately. Oftentimes, they are just left to grow, or just neatened up occasionally. Begin here with your Golden clients that “just want a bath” and ask if you can trim the ears. Fig 19) To begin, hold the ear at the fold and use a straight shear to trim the excess hair off the back edge of the ear. Then, soften the line you just trimmed by using a thinning shear to blend. Fig 20) Comb the hair on the outside of the ear leather up and out and use thinning shears to blend across the top of the ear. The top of the thinning shears should be further away from the ear than the bottom of the thinning shears, and your hand motion should be steady and work from front of the ear to back—this way you are blending the coat from top to bottom at the same time you are blending from front to back. Fig 21) To add finishing touches to the ear, all of the hair should be combed forward and the front of the ear fringe can be lightly thinned, trimming more toward the tip of the ear than the top. You can round the peak of the ear with thinners as well. Fig 22) Example of a finished ear. Fig 23) To finish the body work, take a carding knife and thin out the areas that still have an abundance of coat. You can almost think about working a Golden’s coat in stages—each one more aggressive than the last. The first stage is the force dryer and slicker brush. Once that stops removing undercoat, the next stage is the undercoat rake. And, once that stops removing

undercoat, you can move to a carding knife. You want to remove the undercoat until the top coat lays smoothly over it. Fig 24) The area on the front of the shoulder blade, known as the return of upper arm, is often neglected on breeds like Golden Retrievers. But a quick carding of this area can make a huge difference in the overall transformation of the pet. Fig 25) Using a carding knife on areas such as the outside of the rear legs removes a ton of dead fuzz. Most pet owners with Goldens just want them to not drop fuzz balls all over their house. Removing their undercoat properly and in the appropriate stages allows you to get more coat, and in turn send home a much less fuzzy dog. Taking the extra few minutes to card through a double–coated dog like a Golden is often all it takes to save them from a shave. Fig 26) A pumice stone is also a great carding tool for Goldens. Here, it is being used on the head to remove extra fuzz. Fig 27) The final touch is using thinners to clean up any small cowlicks on the face. This helps soften that sweet expression that this breed is known for. Whiskers can also be trimmed at the owner’s discretion. I hope this article has brought you some valuable information, and showed you how you can take your Goldens from drab to fab in just a few additional steps. Taking the time to appropriately remove the undercoat instead of just taking orders and trimming the outline of this breed, or taking the extra few minutes to trim their ears to help capture that goofy Golden grin everyone loves, will help set your work apart. &

PET’S NAME:

The health, safety and comfort of your pet is important to us. We also believe in including you in conversations about the care of your pet. The use of a cage dryer is safer and more comfortable for some dogs. For your dog, we recommend the use of a cage dryer. We will adhere to the following safe practices when the dryer is in use: • Dryers must have working temperature gauges and timers. • Only equipment manufactured for cage drying will be used. • Manufacturer instructions will be followed. • Dogs drying in a cage dryer will be properly monitored. • Owner must give consent for a cage dryer to be used. I hereby give permission to this grooming establishment to use a cage dryer for the safe and comfortable drying of my dog.

One of the most wonderful, caring things you can do for your pet is to spend time together. Make grooming a special bonding time between you and your pet. If you begin brushing while his hair is short and not tangled, he will be more accepting of it. Start with very short sessions and gradually lengthen them as your pet learns to enjoy daily grooming. Use treats and plenty of praise to reinforce a positive grooming experience. Be sure to use the brushing technique that your groomer demonstrated to you, also see the pamphlet Learning to Brush Your Pet. The importance of thorough brushing followed by a complete combing cannot be overemphasized. This small investment of your time can pay off with tremendous benefits in your pet’s happiness and well being, not to mention his appearance. Working together with your groomer to obtain the proper products for your pet’s care and to learn how to use them correctly, will ensure that your pet looks and feels his best at all times.

Your The Ferocious Flea Pet Care Helps your clientProfessional learn how to protect their pet Is There Any Way to Know How Long the Tick Has Been on My Pet? from fleas and helps you sell retail products you believe in, as well. If the tick looks flat, it has probably attached recently. If the tick is engorged, it may mean that it has been feeding for an extended time. The longer a tick has been feeding on your pet (or you) before being discovered, the greater chance that it will transfer disease. In many cases a ‘bullseye rash’ will appear at the site of a tick bite.

#6013 #6014 #6015 We Are Here to Help You #6016 #6017

Once the tick has been removed, place it in a sealed container or a small sealable plastic bag. You can add a squirt of tick spray to kill it, or simply seal the bag or container and place it in the trash. Ticks need humidity to survive and will perish without it. Do not flush ticks down the toilet. They can survive in the water.

Ticks are far too dangerous to ignore. Just one bite from these tiny terrors could affect you or your pet for the rest of your lives. Your best defense against ticks and the diseases they carry is prevention. We can recommend tick removal tools and a wide range of the products you may need to protect your pets and their environment. Please ask for product recommendations that will safely protect you and your pet from these tiny, treacherous predators.

Cleanse the area around the bite thoroughly and apply an antiseptic to it. Puppy’s First Visit Pet Care Professional Helps your client prepare their puppy for grooming. Offers ways to teach their pet to enjoy grooming. Beneficial before and after the first groom.

In many areas of the country, flea control is a year round necessity. In conjunction with continuing premise control, many pet owners have great success with oral or topical products that are administered once a month to their pet. They come in a variety of brands like - Advantage®, Frontline®, Revolution®, and Program®. There are specific formulations for dogs and cats, and most are approved to use on puppies and kittens six to eight weeks and older. Read and follow the instructions, making sure to use the product that is specified for your pet. These products are extremely popular because of their once a month convenience, ease of application, and effectiveness. Most are waterproof, allowing your pet to be bathed, or to swim, without decreasing the product’s effectiveness. Also, keeping your pet flea free with this continuous protection, is far less costly than trying to eliminate an infestation on your pet and in your home.

Fleas have to come in contact with the product to be killed. That means that fleas actually have to get on, and could possibly bite your pet, before they die. There is also a possibility of skin irritation at the site of application.
