ASK THE GROOMING TUTOR
by Michell Evans
Dear Michell, I have been a bather in a dog grooming shop for over a year now. I see that the groomers make more money than I do and that frustrates me because I spend so much more time on the dogs than they do. I would like to make more money, but I am perfectly happy to continue bathing dogs. I just don’t know if cutting hair is something I want to do right now. There is another girl in our shop who is learning to groom and her paychecks have actually gotten worse because she is —AMY so slow right now. Any advice? i Amy. In some salons a bath is all a bather is expected to do. That’s it. Simply bathe the dog. Then the groomer (stylist) does all the drying and prepping. In others, the duties of a bather cover all aspects of canine and feline hygiene. When you start learning to bathe pets, just getting the pet clean and rinsed well is enough to master. At this stage you are learning how to work with the
6
animals in the safest, most comfortable and most efficient way possible, for both you and the pet. As you develop your skills, you might be asked to add ear plucking and cleaning, anal gland expression and a variety of oral hygiene treatments. You might also be expected to do de–shedding treatments that are done while the pet is soaped up in the bathtub and administer a variety of bathing

treatments like flea treatments and medicated shampoos. At this stage you might be blowing out (HV drying) double coated breeds as part of the de–shedding process as well. And as you become even more advanced, you might be asked to add HV drying on a grooming table. This is a whole new territory as far as dog handling goes. Most dogs are a little insecure on the grooming table. This

is one of our biggest allies in grooming but it can also pose challenges for new bathers. Most pets prefer not to have their heads HV dried. This stage offers a lot of challenges in learning how to safely and comfortably handle the pet while still achieving a dry pet from head to toe. As you advance, you will likely be skilled in the art of fluff/stretch drying with a stand dryer and tooth scaling, depending on state law. De–matting comes in at this stage as well, with some de–matting being done before the bath. Not much crate/cage drying happens at this skill level. The most advanced bathers will likely be asked to shave pads, shave rectums and genitalia as well as clip and grind nails. Some salons might even ask you to clip the face, feet and tail patterns onto the poodles and

By now you are probably doing lots of dogs all by yourself with no stylist contribution. If you are providing all these applicable services for your employer, consider asking for your title to be changed to hygienist rather than a bather and ask for a bigger commission or a higher hourly rate. A hygienist like this is the backbone of the grooming salon. They are the founda-
tion of the groom. At this point they are, in some cases, doing more labor on the pet than the stylist. Many grooming salons pay their bathers a low rate and give them the brunt of the work. This can be a mistake. Quality starts with the hygienist! Any salon would pay their weight in gold, if they had it, for a quality bather who enjoys bathing and wants to stay in the roll of a bather. Teaching groomers to groom from the bather position costs the salon a lot of

money. The owner or other staff must produce less to make time to train and the trainee is not productive for up to a year, or more. Not to mention the bather–turn–groomer does not make much money while learning, as you mentioned with your co–worker. Asking for a raise poses many challenges to your employer. As an employee you might think it is simple to give a raise, but the money has to come from somewhere and the employer has to crunch the numbers and figure out where. This is a tightrope that employers walk because stylists are just as integral to the quality production of pet grooms as a good hygienist! In some cases the raise for the hygienist means less commission for the stylist. If you are simply bathing the pets and that’s all, your employer might consider a small hourly or commission raise depending on your productivity and quality. If your employer allows, learn all the areas of pet hygiene that I mentioned above and develop your speed. You should expect periodic raises that coincide with added efficiency and skill. Skill plus speed equals value. Happy advancing! ✂

FOR SPECIAL
NEEDS PETS Little Louie the Yorkie came
to see me today. He is a special needs baby with neurological issues, he can’t stand for very long and lays down for practically the entire process. ouie came from a puppy mill and lived his entire first year in a cage so small that even after he was rescued, he would only eliminate while laying down. This is only one of many stories we hear and only one of the many conditions that we might see in the course of our grooming career. Some pets can’t tolerate the dryer without having seizures, some are terrified of the spray of water. Many groomers are taught to train the pet to the table and need a

standing pet to get a good finish. Some are taught that the pet must be “bone dry” before leaving the salon. Other myths might include that the nails need to be trimmed despite the fact that the pet is frothing at the mouth and/or having a bowel movement on the table out of sheer terror. These outdated concepts are practically thrown out of the window when dealing with a special needs pet. Fortunately, there are many things we can do to help alleviate the stress of grooming these little souls while they are in our care.

Veterinary grooming has allowed me to work with many different types of issues that salons do not normally see. Fixators, neuro cases and rare skin issues, like Calcinosis Cutis, keep me on my toes and force me to become creative when I am faced with a pet that cannot be groomed in the traditional manner. A detailed care plan is crucial to success. Making sure the owner is aware of what is realistically possible and what the physical limits of the pet are will give everyone involved
Have a protocol in place in case there is an accident or emergency. It is much better to know what to do and have no emergency than have an emergency and not know what to do! a better sense of what the outcome will be. Knowing the medical history and physical limitations of the pet you are working on is important. Communicate clearly with the owner, signing a contract if necessary, so that the owner does not have unrealistic expectations of the type of finish that will be produced. Some pets must be done in more than one session. Pain and stress management should be discussed and verified by the pet’s veterinarian. These arrangements can be made ahead of time so
"Best shears ever! You have saved my career in the future, I'm sure! My thumb is placed in a better position, my carpal tunnel is kept nice and open, I can scissor the left foot more easily. This is just the best thing ever. Thank you so much." — Brianna
that the owner can be ready to ease the pet with any medication in case joint pain or stress are the result of the grooming procedure. These types of grooms are for comfort first, beauty second. The more you practice, the better you will get when putting a finish on a special needs groom. Do not rely on your previous records to be current or accurate. Make sure there is a current number where the owner can be reached and make sure they understand that they must be “on call” in case the grooming process becomes overwhelming to the pet.
Unparalleled Performance
Have a protocol in place in case there is an accident or emergency. It is much better to know what to do and have no emergency than have an emergency and not know what to do! Charge for your time. This is a specialty service that takes extra time and knowledge. You are a professional and should be paid for your work. It is ideal to know your hourly rate of doing business and charge for this type of service by the hour. I find that soothing music and a calm atmosphere are the foundation when working with any pet. a necessary foundation before the work begins. Make sure that you have ample time to do the groom in a relaxed manner, even taking the time to stretch and do some breathing exercises if the morning has been hectic. Make sure every single tool and piece of equipment is ready and within reach so there is no chance that the pet is left without a hand touching it at all times. This includes shears, brushes, ear cleaner and swabs, shampoos and conditioners and plenty of towels. Make it a protocol that your staff understands what you are doing so there are minimal interruptions. Focusing on the task at hand will help alleviate the risk of accidents brought on by careless staff suddenly swinging the door open or making loud and sudden noises in the hall. Make a laminated sign to post on the door so that everyone is aware that you are focused and must not be disturbed. Keeping your shears off of the grooming table during the groom is of the utmost importance. It is an involuntary reaction to “save” your expensive shears when your eyes see them falling onto the floor. So much damage can be done to your flesh and nerves if you try to catch them as they fall. I know this from experience. There is no shame in admitting that you are not able to do a certain pet. Our job is to find the best fit possible for these special pet friends, even if that means we give them to another groomer or send them to a different facility. These special souls can be very rewarding when giving them the care that they need to be happy, healthy, clean and comfortable. You have given them the gift of quality of life. One day we too will have health issues and may need a caregiver to care for us. Be the caregiver you would want taking care of you. ✂

“L
ast September I was walking through the Groom Expo trade show with Sam and Cynthia Kohl,” says Vicki Zwart, owner of Heritage Pet Center in Parker, Colorado. “Strolling toward us was the industry renowned ‘Dogfather’, Joey Villani. When Joey spotted Sam, he called out to him—“Here comes the legend!” As Sam and Joey shook hands, I began to think about the story behind Joey’s comment.” Becoming famous wasn’t Sam Kohl’s goal when he entered the pet care field. try today that has not benefited in one way or another from Mr. Kohl’s multi–faceted contributions; whether it be from the many in–depth books he has written, the innovative tools he has designed, or the thousands of groomers he has taught. Originally Sam planned to become a veterinarian, but that dream was not to be. After high school, Sam enlisted in the Marine Corps where he learned to do things ‘by the number’. When he left the military, Sam and four of his friends started a delivery service. And, although the business was successful, Sam longed to do

something with pets. He opened one tropical fish store, and then two full–line pet shops. Soon, people were coming in and asking him to groom their dogs. So, Sam read everything he could find about it and went to dog shows to see how the professionals groomed. Next he took a course at the New York School of Dog Grooming that was owned by Ben Stone. After his graduation, Ben—recognizing Sam’s love for the dogs and ability to groom—offered Sam a partnership in the school. Then, in 1970 Sam and his wife, Cynthia bought the school.
It was a very small operation in the beginning, but over the years they opened two satellite locations and became the largest and most prestigious grooming school in existence, with students coming from all over the world to enroll. There was very limited information available for teaching students when Sam took over the New York School of Dog Grooming. He knew that they needed a solid, well defined course of study in order to teach uniformly. He and one of the school’s instructors, Cathy Goldstein, contacted every breed club of the American Kennel Club (AKC) to ask exactly how each breed should be groomed. This was a monumental task, since the grooming instructions needed to be converted for pet grooming. When completed it helped develop

equipment that groomers use every day. “Tools that will help make a groomer’s life easier and more efficient have long been my passion,” says Sam intently. “And, the beauty, comfort, and well being of the pets is always uppermost when I design or improve a tool.” “His first tool innovation came when I complained that using a hemostat to pull hair from a Poodle’s ear was painful due to its locking clamps,” said Cynthia Kohl. “No problem,” said Sam. Soon he developed and marketed the Hairmostat® ear–hair puller with comfortable vinyl handles and no hazardous locking clamp. Often, groomers would come to him for suggestions on how to solve their problems. Carla DeGregoria, a groomer from Massachusetts, remarked that shops had an issue with mixing up or losing collars and leashes. Sam helped remedy this problem by inventing the Kard Karrier®, a cage card holder with a built–in hook to hold a leash and collar. He received a U.S. patent for this and also for his next invention, the Rakiteer®, a unique scissors, brush and clipper holder. His company, Aaronco Pet Products Inc., grew by leaps and bounds as he continued to design tools and write books for the industry. Mr. Kohl continually challenges himself to make things easier for hard working groomers. “Groomers are on their feet all day long, and work for hours and hours,” Sam says. “They need tools and equipment that solve a problem, save time, and are ergonomic and comfortable to use.” Every time Sam got an idea for a new tool he would sketch it out and make a prototype out of wood or other material. Then Cynthia would test how it felt in her hand and how well it worked, and together they would refine the design until they were both satisfied with it. Sam designed the Honeycomb® line of combs. They were each for-

DOGS: AN EFFECTIVE WAY TO SAVE OUR CHILDREN E by Sam Kohl e

t is inconceivable to me that no one in this country has suggested placing professionally trained guard dogs in our schools. This would be far less dangerous than arming teachers or having a lone police officer on duty. It is much more effective than creating a potential wild west shoot–out situation. Well-trained guard dogs are
capable of not only sensing danger and detecting the odor of gun powder, they can spring into action and bring someone down much more quickly than a person can. I would place 2 dogs, along with their handlers in every school. They would surely make the students and staff a lot more comfortable and much safer. ✂

And, he introduced the Champ® Black scissors line and the TwinThin®, a combination thinning shear and straight scissor. He also created a complete line of stripping tools. He encouraged clipper companies to manufacture the #3, #3 1/2, and #8 1/2 blades as well as clipper coolant. He urged them to make appealing colors for the clipper cases, instead of their traditional use of only plain black ones. He was the first to design brightly colored grooming loops and has brought a multitude of other innovative tools to the industry. It would be a safe bet to say that most of the world’s groomers use tools and equipment every day that were designed or influenced by Sam Kohl. other companies improve their tools and equipment. “I suggested that dryer manufacturers install heavier (take–apart) wheels and that they use lighter motors so that stand dryers would not constantly tip over when they are being used,” recalls Sam. He was instrumental in changing the design of grooming tables, too. Many of the early hydraulic tables were boxy (almost coffin–shaped). He showed how a more tapered and stylish design would benefit groomers by keeping them from hitting their knees when they were working on a pet. And, even small concerns did not escape his attention. He suggested to pet nail clipper manufacturers that they place a vinyl coating on the handles of their clippers. It made them more comfortable to hold
and safer to use. Through the years, Sam Kohl truly became an icon in the grooming industry. He has countless accomplishments and has been the recipient of a myriad of awards—including the Barkleigh Honors Sally Liddick Lifetime Achievement Award. Of everything he has done, Sam says that his greatest reward is the pleasure he gets from people who come up to him at grooming shows to thank him for their careers— whether they are graduates from his schools, or have taught themselves to groom by using his book. And when they tell him how much they appreciate and use a tool he has designed, Sam smiles warmly and replies, “Thank you. I’m glad that I could help you.” “Now I understand what Joey

e all have a couple of grooming clients we will remember forever. Some clients are reminisced with fondness, others not quite so affectionally. Casey falls somewhere in the middle. She was an adorable, well-behaved golden retriever, who inspired my love of the breed. Casey would rest her head on my shoulder during grooming and just loved to give kisses. She was also my first grooming accident. Casey licked my scissors while I was trimming up her feet. Tongues bleed. A lot. My grooming manager pulled out the pet first aid kit and thankfully took over. I learned two things that day: the importance of knowing where your

My own pet first aid kit has evolved over the years and currently contains the following: 1. Activated charcoal is used to absorb ingested poisons. a veterinarian. Protocols vary and what will help in one instance can cause harm in another. 2. Antibiotic cream for wounds. I do not use triple antibiotic as I groom cats. The combination of the three ingredients may cause a fatal reaction in some cats. I prefer to use all natural products, but most

Instead I look for complete disclosure on the label and research the individual ingredients. 3. Antihistamine and safety pin for minor allergic reactions. I specifically look for diphenhydramine gels with a liquid center. The safety pin is used to puncture the gel cap and squirt the liquid directly onto to the tongue of the pet. It is the fastest way for an anaphylactic pet to absorb the antihistamine. Consult a veterinarian for proper dosing. Not all pets can safely use antihistamines as it may interfere with other medications and medical conditions. 4. Apps for smart phones. I have two that I like. The first is the ASPCA’s Pet Poison app. It’s FREE and will dial the number for the Pet Poison Hotline. As minutes matter in a poisoning, this is invaluable if you cannot reach a local veterinarian for instructions. The second is a veterinarian locator. This is useful if you are either a mobile or house call groomer and need to find the closest veterinarian. 5. Baking soda to absorb topical poisons or chemicals. 6. Band aids for myself. This is the one item that is replenished on a regular basis. 7. Bandanas have multiple uses. They replace triangular bandages and can be used as slings to take the weight off of an injured limb. 8. Expired gift cards are always

I place gauze on both sides of the card and securely wrap the cards and gauze to the paw with vet wrap. In addition, the cards can flick out bee stingers. Place the card at the base of the stinger where it meets the skin and lift up and out. 9. Eyewash serves double duty. It can be used to flush out both eyes and wounds.
10. Gauze comes in three varieties: gauze roll, gauze pads, and nonstick gauze pads. The gauze roll is wider and is good for larger wounds. The nonstick gauze is more expensive, but I will use it as the first pad on the wound and then place the cheaper gauze on top on it. The nonstick gauze will not remove the scab when it is time to replace the bandaging. 11. Honey packets for hypoglycemic pets. Stress, seizures, as well

as an owner giving a pet too much insulin can result in low blood sugar. This is a serious condition that may result in the death of the pet. Signs include listlessness, staggering, tremors, muscle weakness, and seizures. Do not give the pet honey unless directed by a veterinarian. 12. Hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting in a dog. As this is used for poisoning, consult a veterinarian first. Dosage will vary. Vomiting is not a given for poisoning. If it is caustic, it will burn the throat on its way out. You cannot use hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting in cats. Cats cannot metabolize hydrogen peroxide. 13. Ice will constrict blood flow and slow bleeding. Instant ice packs can be kept in your kit, which are activated by squeezing the pack to stimulate the cooling components. 14. Liquid bandage is an asset if you know how to use it properly. Used incorrectly, it can damage surrounding tissue, as well as trap bacteria in the wound. Your veterinarian can instruct you in proper usage. I do not use superglue. It is not manufactured for medical use and as such, the manufacturer can change ingredients and formulation without consideration for safety on wounds. 15. Muzzles are a must. If you need to use your pet first aid kit, this pet is likely in pain. Any pet that is in pain is a bite risk. 16. Plastic baggies to collect a vomit or fecal sample. This may be

It is effective in stopping bleeding. In Casey’s situation, we used sugar. While sugar is effective, I do not recommend it because the pet may be diabetic or pre-diabetic. 22. Vet wrap is wonderful. It keeps the wound secure and dry. Vet

wrap is also expensive. The human counterpart, which is the exact same thing, is a fraction of the cost. 23. Wound cleanser offers several options. The first is sterile saline solution, also known as eyewash. The second is a Chlorohexidine based cleanser. This is easy to find. Almost any store that sells first aid items carries it. The third is my personal choice. I use Vetericyn products. Do not use hydrogen peroxide as it degrades surrounding tissue and cats cannot metabolize it. Do not use alcohol as it stings. Do not use sterile, tap, or bottled water as it disrupts the salt balance of the cells and slows healing. Keep in mind that many of these items have expiration dates and should be checked periodically. Because we treated Casey promptly, her wound healed quickly. As a result, Casey was in less pain. The hardest part was telling Casey’s mom what happened. Casey’s mom shrugged it off telling us that it was an ongoing problem, as Casey loved to steal her sewing scissors. Which brings me to the third thing I learned that day. When I ask the owner if there are any conditions I should be aware of, and the owner cannot think of anything, I offer a couple of medical AND behavioral possibilities. ✂

ive minutes might not be a long time but sometimes it is just enough. When you are a busy pet groomer, finding five minutes in your day to do small things like make calls or type out grooming notes feels like trying to find time that doesn’t exist. animals in just a few extra minutes away from the grooming table. The thought of one more thing to do is already making your eyes wide. Breathe. You are probably already using your non–grooming minutes to talk with clients so why not lead conversations that will have a positive impact? You can talk with your clients about many different things that are beneficial including brushing and combing techniques, grooming

frequency recommendations, general coat care and how to help their pets learn to love the grooming process. These tips will help you use your time wisely and have short, but powerful conversations that don’t put you behind on busy days.
HAVE A SIMPLE GOAL IN MIND If you plan to talk with a client when they come to pick up their pet, have a goal in mind before the conver-

When it comes to the areas that need some work, be prepared to do more than just point them out. Tell your clients exactly what they can do when it comes to maintaining their pets' coats and nails. sation even begins. You might want to tell them about many things, but what are the most important points that you need to get across? Set a goal for the conversation you are about to have and then simplify it and simplify it again. Be prepared to be a good listener and to be able to work in the things you’d like to discuss with your clients in a natural way. Use examples or stories and talk not just with words but with body language. If you want your client to truly take in what you are
telling them, you have to communicate in a way that will help them remember. Clients are very excited about seeing their pets after grooming and every person has many things on their mind at once so keep your message simple and to the point so it does not become overwhelming or diluted.
TELL THEM THE THINGS THEY ARE DOING WELL Some topics are difficult to bring up without making your client feel
badly. If their pet had overgrown nails, explain to them what they can do to help and how to tell when it’s time for a nail trim. Your clients love their pets and it might be embarrassing for them if you point out things that they can do differently in the future or issues that you noticed. Point out the things that your clients are doing well and share your tips for the things they might need some extra help with in a way that does not make them feel ashamed. You can make a difference by educating your clients and they will be grateful for it, but if you make them feel like you are only there to point out problems they will not be happy about having the conversation at all. Remember that if your goal is to help pets and make a difference, you have to reach the pet owners.
GIVE THEM SIMPLE BUT SOLID ADVICE When it comes to the areas that need some work, be prepared to do more than just point them out. Tell your clients exactly what they can do when it comes to maintaining their pets' coats and nails. Having examples or even educational handouts you can share might be helpful.

When you finish using your airbrush gun make sure to clean it before putting it away. Cleaning solutions will depend on the ink formula you use. Most of the time I use a combination of water and alcohol.
You can also use Windex to do an overnight soak should you have a stubborn clog. Then make sure to clean the needle of any stuck on ink. GROOMING BUSINESS BASICS

GROOMER & PET SAFETY IN THE SALON Donna is a groomer at a busy salon in a busy burg. She works with several other groomers and they enjoy a vibrant workplace with happy clientele returning regularly. Her salon is like most—it has tubs, tables, gates, some cages, dryers, grooming equipment and pets.
T
here are electrical cords, plumbing fixtures, doors opening and closing, phones ringing, and clients coming and going. Her days are filled with barking dogs and bustling business concerns. Such is the life of a groomer in a busy grooming salon. Donna’s co–worker brought her new puppy to work recently. Every-

Peanut became comfortable in the salon and found a comfortable sleeping space at the foot of Donna’s table. Days turned into a few weeks and everyone became accustomed to Peanut’s antics—greeting customers,

floor as well. The aftermath was not pleasant. Peanut suffered a broken pelvis and so did Donna. While Peanut will survive—and so will the groomer—the collateral damage from the accident was felt by many. There were medical bills, both canine and, more devastatingly, human. The unfortunate groomer experienced loss of income, pain, and her co–workers experienced loss of much needed help to service customers. Her employer experienced an increase in worker’s compensation rates and the loss of income for her time off. Peanut meant no harm, and everyone enjoyed his presence, but if someone had assessed the risk he posed by playing free in the salon, the story could have had a much better outcome. Groomers often become unaware of their surroundings over time. Likewise, they become less mindful of the hazards to themselves and pets that can occur in a grooming environment. Unfortunate but common injuries to both employees and pets can happen to even the most compassionate pet service professionals. Staying aware of your surroundings and learning to assess risks to yourself, your co–workers, and the pets in your care is critical to preventing injuries. We all know that accidents happen—particularly when dealing with animals. Learning to eliminate some of these accidents from your workplace will allow not only you, but also your customers to enjoy a greater peace of mind when you are grooming their pet. The easiest group of risks to assess and eliminate are avoidable injuries. Avoidable injuries include bites, cuts, scratches, clipper burn, shampoo or product related issues, drying mishaps, pets jumping from elevations such as tables, cages, or tubs, stepping on or tripping over loose pets, just to name a few. Eye protection from dirt and debris is another concern for working pet stylists. I recently saw a groomer who was impaled in the eye by a f lying nail clipping. No muss, no fuss— just a regular little dog with regular little nails. injuries are generally avoidable because you can predict that they may happen based upon experience, animal knowledge, and practicing basic safe handling policies. Many groomers become good at practicing safety for their furry clients before they think of doing so for themselves. Workplace safety doesn’t just stop at minimizing bite risk—it’s much more comprehensive. Groomers need to learn to see danger, not
just in the snapping canines of a voracious terrier, but also in their everyday interactions with their equipment and workplace. Think of the last time you blew out a Golden Retriever with a densely packed undercoat and how satisfying it was to present the freshly groomed dog to his adoring owners. Did you protect your ears from the decibels of the high velocity dryer? What? Did you protect your ears from the high
velocity dryer!? See what I mean, hearing loss can sneak up on groomers over time. Eye protection from dirt and debris is another concern for working pet stylists. I recently saw a groomer who was impaled in the eye by a flying nail clipping. No muss, no fuss—just a regular little dog with regular little nails. Thankfully, the groomer was not injured but it serves as a cautionary tale; protect your eyes from flying

You work in an industry which has a shortened career span. Much like a fireman or policeman, many pet groomers will not endeavor in the field all the way to retirement. Issues such as carpal tunnel, degenerative disc disease, tendonitis and tennis elbow are among the culprits

which prevent groomers from earning full wages into their golden years. Take advantage of advancements in your industry by reducing strain on your body whenever possible. Hydraulic and electric tables and tubs, as well as anti–fatigue mats are another added perk which may add years to your career. Many groomers have access to protection and prevention at their disposal; ear and eye protection, masks, muzzles, and many other aids to prevent injury or illness. What’s stopping you from using them? In some cases, it’s a culture of not protecting oneself. How many times have you heard “There’s no crying in dog grooming”? Creating awareness to common health risks of your chosen career will help educate not only yourself, but future stylists as well. Basic groomer health dialog begins with taking care of you, so you can take care of your clients. You can create a culture of self–care in your working environment by utilizing the tools you have available to protect yourself. A career in Pet Grooming is chock full of inherent hazards—from your environment to your unwilling clientele. As you learn to assess the risks around you and then employ good judgement, you will begin to practice better health and safety standards for yourself and your furry clients. As animal caretakers, it’s natural to want to provide a safe and protective environment for our canine and feline guests. However, looking after your own safety is just as critical. Safeguarding against common groomer health issues will allow you to serve the clients you love in an industry you are passionate about for many years to come. ✂

BEHAVIOR CLIPS by Gary Wilkes

IS ALWAYS AN EXCUSE
It’s pretty common for dog owners to blame themselves for their dog’s problems. The majority of them have nothing to feel guilty about—but still do. They don’t really have a justification for their feelings because, (Big Reveal), they aren’t trainers.
T
hey don’t know how to scissor–cut a Bichon or correctly strip the coat on a Schnauzer, either. If they felt guilty about that, you’d immediately disabuse them of that feeling and tell them that those are skills better left to you. Besides their feeling of failure because their dog is ill–behaved, there is a second, underlying reason for their guilt. They assume they have somehow harmed their dog—which is almost never true. They sense this emotion because of a common

cultural belief that everyone should be able to control a dog—despite massive evidence to the contrary. They are convinced that they’ve ruined their dog because they assume that everyone else is happy with their dog’s behavior. If they only knew... In reality, the vast majority of dog owners get lucky. They get dogs that don’t really ‘need’ training. Their dog adapts to their family without much fuss. Either they don’t care that the dog is an annoyance when guests come to the door or

they use some form of confinement like kiddie gates or crates to control the dog’s lack of training. Dog experts help foster this perspective. Another irony is that many dog experts don’t know how to control behavior and leave the average dog owner in the lurch. They have a menu of services and offer the same things to all clients—whether they need those things or not. I’m not overstating that. Most modern dog experts depend on confinement and cookies to control dogs. That’s like

My point in this is that your clients aren’t behavior experts. Their ignorance is always an excuse. If they take the advice of experts and it fails, it’s not they who are to blame. In most cases, it’s not the dog’s fault, either. ers, to know this is two–fold. You see a dog throughout its life and are in the prime position to sense that a dog has behavior problems. When you refer to a trainer, you need to realize that many people in my profession secretly or openly blame owners for the behavior problems of their dogs. This can lead to bad service for your clients. First and foremost, a trainer should by sympathetic to their client. The fact that the owner is seeking a trainer is confirmation that they need help and are committed to the dog. Will they devote 20 hours a day to convoluted, complex methods that take months to work? Heck, no. They want real solutions, now. That is not
too much to ask. In many cases, they have been living with a ‘problem dog’ for a long time. That same shame over having an ill–behaved dog is what often keeps them from seeking help. Worse, many dog owners go through trainer after trainer trying to find one who can adjust the training to their lifestyle. Again, that is not usually an unreasonable demand. You can take it from me—most owners are plagued because their dogs do things. They jump on guests, pee in the house, destroy valuables and knock down the kids. These are all things that can be solved immediately. (The exception is house– training, that takes longer but can be immediately controlled via intelligent

confinement.) If a trainer can’t stop these things, safely, humanely and immediately, they are in the same boat as those ‘expensive shoe’ experts. The connection for groomers is simple. Those dog owners are your clients. If they get rid of the dog, they won’t have a dog that needs grooming. Your business will benefit if you have connections to trainers who know what they are doing and truly love helping people and their dogs. My point in this is that your clients aren’t behavior experts. Their ignorance is always an excuse. If they take the advice of experts and it fails, it’s not they who are to blame. In most cases, it’s not the dog’s fault, either. It’s simply a matter of learning a few skills or finding someone who can teach them those skills. Your close relationship with them can head off a train–wreck waiting to happen. Take the time to know more about their dog’s behavior and help them stay on the tracks. When you seek a trainer that you can refer to your clients, look for someone who is sympathetic to their needs. Then ask them if your clients have to start wearing cheap flip–flops and hide their good pair of shoes. ✂

significantly grown in the past several years as online search continues to develop from a novelty to a standard and regular feature in our everyday lives.
USE YOUR SMALL BUSINESS ADVANTAGES TO COMPETE WITH THE BIG PLAYERS KEYWORD TARGETING Big retail chain and franchise brands often choose not to target specific keywords or are unable to use them for several reasons. The SEO keyword universe is limitless, and while the large salons are restricted to using specific ones by rule, a small salon can take advantage of it. For example, a large pet retail brand would definitely target keywords like “pet grooming”, while a small salon can attract a more specific audience with long-tail keywords such as “pet grooming Las Vegas, NV” or “grooming salons Las Vegas.” Broad or “short tail” keywords are one or two words such as “dog grooming” and refer to more commonly used shorter and generic terms people search for and target a broad audience. Long tail keywords are keyword phrases that are typically made up of three to five words such as “dog grooming in Las Vegas, NV” which are longer and target a more specific audience. Long tail keywords aren’t as popular, but are more targeted to specific searches and come with less competition; therefore are more affordable.
BRAND AUTHORITY AND SPECIFIC NICHES A large, national pet retail chain will focus on history and the quality of their services. Your local pet grooming salon can focus on blog topics such as “Best Apps for Pet Lovers,” “How to Make Doggie Pumpkin Treats,” etc. Give your future clients valuable advice and not just sales tricks. Get those undecided people’s attention by teaching

QUALITY CONTENT Finally, all of the above should be integrated in your website content. While large pet retail chains need to be really organic in their contents, as they cannot possibly cover everything that they do in small articles, you can invest ten times more effort in a single piece of content. Set keywords that are extremely important for your business and create that quality content, giving valuable information, options, and building the trust of its readers. Here is a step-by-step proven process to move your salon to the top of the list: 1. Select Your Keywords: First, put together a list of keywords that reflect your services. You might try

keywords such as “local pet grooming,” “dog grooming,” “pet spa” and “pet groomers.” When you have a decent list, set up a free Google AdWords account. Small salon owners can use the invaluable Google Keyword Tool to help them select the best keywords for their given services. This allows you to type in your selected keywords to find out how much traffic they get. It also suggests related keywords that may not have occurred to you. 2. Optimize Your Keywords: When your keyword list is finalized, it is time to optimize them on your Google My Business page and your website. Your Google My Business page appears in the “Map” section of Google local listings. It boosts your online presence and gives prospective clients a short description of your services. It

provides such as “do it yourself dog wash,” “mobile pet grooming” and “temporary color and tattoos.” Try to select three to five categories. • Description: This is a brief overview of your business that should end with a call to action. • Hours: Make sure that your business hours are correct and are consistent on all of your internet listings. • Images: Add photos of your salon, your staff, the groomed pets, your team at work, etc. because this can dramatically increase customer engagement.
is much easier to increase your rankings with a Google My Business page than with a website. 3. Make sure that all of these components are complete and accurate: • Verification: You must first create or claim your business page and submit it for Google verification. Your verification is confirmed when you see a checkmark and the word “Verified” next to your business name. • NAP: Your business name, address and phone number must be accurate and consistent in all listings. Let Google know that your business is a local one by including a local phone number instead of an 800 number. • Categories: Google My Business categories should focus on services. Along with “pet grooming,” list any additional services your salon

keywords. Here is what to focus on: • The title tag is the single most important element on your homepage. It should be between 50 and 65 characters long, and formatted similarly to: Pet Grooming in {Your City} | {Name of Your Salon}. • The next element is the meta description, which lists your primary services and should end with a call to action. It must be between 100 and 150 characters in length: {Name of salon} offers affordable {pet grooming services} in {Your City}. Call {Phone Number} today for an appointment! • Make sure the visible headline is concisely descriptive and contains your primary category. This format works well: {Pet Groomers} in {City, State}. • The last major element is your page copy, a 500 to 1,000 word descriptive section that provides some background information about your salon. You should briefly describe your services, and end with a strong call to action. Make sure to use your primary keyword throughout the page in a natural way. • Create a separate page for each of your services. Optimize each service page in exactly the same way as the homepage, making sure to substitute the relevant keyword.

GROOMING MATTERS
R E M O GRO
S K C HA
by Daryl Conner
’ve been thinking for a while of compiling a list of grooming hacks, and I have a feeling that this may just be the tip of the iceberg. So here you have it, the start of a happy little list of hacks that I have picked up over the years to make my grooming life easier, and a little more fun.
CHALK OR POWDER HACK Let’s say you have a Cairn on your table that has already been washed and dried. It looks and smells nice, except it has greasy, clumpy hair around its ears. You remember that the owner told you they had just finished treating the dog for an ear infection, and you realize that some of that super oily medication they used remains in the coat and looks terrible. Do you re–bathe? No! Just rub some talcum powder, corn starch or grooming chalk in the area and let it sit a while as you groom the dog. After a bit, go back and gently brush the powder out of the coat. Voila! The powder will have absorbed the oils and the hair will look clean and fluffy. (In some cases, more than one application may be required.)
NAIL TRIMMING HACKS
“Life hacks” have been quite popular in the last few years. This term is used to refer to a shortcut, trick, or novel method of accomplishing something in a way that makes life more efficient and productive. Sometimes “hacks” describe a method of using ordinary things in creative ways. 66

That dog that really hates to have its nails trimmed? You know the one. Sometimes something as simple as a change of scenery will help. Try trimming the nails in the tub instead of on the table. For many dogs this is all it will take. Alternately, try having someone trim nails while someone else is operating the high velocity dryer on the dog. The distraction often makes dogs totally forget they are getting a manicure. Another great idea? Invest

a couple bucks and buy a set of rubber kitchen gloves for your grooming space. If you have one of those dogs that tries to slice your arms to ribbons with their back claws while you are working on the front ones, these babies will totally save your skin.
MUZZLE WIZARDS Some dogs can slide a muzzle off their face so fast you barely see it happen. Or, they flip out if you put a muzzle on them, making them more stressed than they already were. Often this happens with short nosed breeds, and you find yourself in the danger zone of snapping jaws while you work. Simply put an Elizabethan Collar on that extends further than the dog’s nose and you will now be free to work on its entire body in much greater safety. But what about when you get to
that bitey little face? Keep reading.
OLD PANTY HOSE HACK I always keep a pair of old panty hose handy in the grooming area. Cut the legs off and toss the rest. Here is an example of how they come in super handy. Say you are grooming a little Shih Tzu that is determined not to cooperate with the beautification process. You used an E–collar, as above, and got everything from the ears back taken care of, but now you are left with a fuzzy face and a bad attitude. You can’t cut the hair if the dog is muzzled, but you also can’t if it’s biting you. Panty hose to the rescue. Make a loop and slide it over the dog’s muzzle. Double that loop, keeping the pressure firm, then tie the ends behind the dog’s ears snugly. You now have a few minutes

in which you can trim the top of the head, ears, cheeks, and under the neck. Using your comb, you can tease hair out from under the hose, and trim it, (careful, these dogs will be sliding their tongue in and out like a hummingbird!) You can slide the hose around some and get lots of the facial hair, while the dog’s mouth is held shut. You won’t be able to get every last hair, and you will not win any styling awards with this method, but on serious biters, it’s one way to get the face trimmed to “good enough” standards. And sometimes that is all we can hope for. Only leave this make–shift muzzle on for a few minutes, because the dog cannot pant and may potentially overheat. This is a hack to be used swiftly and definitively, and as a last resort for dogs who are determined to taste you. It will NOT work on large, strong breeds.
STICKY NOTE HACK If you have a computer in your work space, you know that pet hair will work its way around the keys. Peel pages off a pad of sticky notes and use the adhesive edge to press along your keyboard and gently lift hair (and cookie crumbs!) up and away. No sticky residue will remain.
PICK YOUR POLISH Grooming tools can look a lot alike. If you have more than one person working together, have everyone pick a favorite color of nail polish and simply put a dot of it on each of their tools. This simple hack can save a lot of arguing and hurt feelings.

VANQUISH VIBRATING Some dogs, (often it’s older terriers) have shaky hind legs while they are being groomed. It’s not a fear response, but more of a high–energy– dog–trying–to–stay–still response. It can make it very hard to scissor those legs. If you gently pinch the thumb and forefinger of your non–dominant hand at the back of the leg, just above the knee, the leg will stop trembling while you hold it, and you can quickly scissor the hair you need to. I’m willing to bet you have a whole list of fun hacks, too. Feel free to share them, maybe they will show up in a later edition. Meanwhile, enjoy trying some new things to make your grooming day more efficient. ✂
