Carol works in a salon with two other groomers. The groomers in her salon get along great, and each have their regular clients as well as time to take new clients as they come calling. They pride themselves in relating to their customers and completing quality grooms.

n a recent Saturday, one of Carol’s co–workers was having a bad day. She had problems at home and spent much of the day on her cell phone handling personal business. She was in and out of the grooming room, not present to speak to her clients, and unable to help with the normal flow in a bustling grooming shop. Carol completed her own grooms and helped with her co–worker’s dogs. She answered extra phone calls and left her table more often than usual. At the end of the day, she took a call from an elderly client for which she had groomed a Miniature Schnauzer earlier in the day. The client was upset and demanding a refund—Carol had missed clipping a toenail on the front foot and the pup had scratched Mrs. Helen’s leg with his single talon–like toe knife. Carol lost her focus and Mrs. Helen paid the price. That single toenail was the cause of lost income, loss of reputation, pain for the client, and in some cases, the loss of a valued client for Carol’s grooming shop. If you have been a Pet Groomer for more than a minute, you’ve likely felt the sting of losing your focus. Funny memes circulate the internet comparing Pet Groomers to anything from MacGyver to Harry Potter to Houdini. Groomers are often capable of leaping small Newfoundlands in a single bound and scaling Mt Everest with packs of little terrier dogs on their backs. Such is the life of a competent busy Pet Groomer. To prevent poor performance, learning strategies to maintain focus and developing processes for quality and speed are beneficial to every Pet Professional. Like any muscle, the brain needs flexing, stretching, and strengthening. Improving your everyday focus

begins with developing a defined process. Organizing your mental flow is difficult if you suffer from DOET (Different Order Every Time Disorder). If you outline the steps of your own grooming process and complete them in the same order each groom, you will be less likely to skip steps if you are interrupted. Make sure that you find natural stopping points in the grooming process if you find yourself surrounded by disorder or in a situation which is challenging your focus. For example,
a typical grooming process following bath may be: Prep Coat, Nails, Pads, Sanitary, Body, Legs, Head, and Finish. If you were interrupted during your process, you may choose to finish all four feet before stopping. When developing a routine, remember Repetition is Key. Another key to improving your daily focus is practicing memory skills. There are scores of free computer games and mobile apps designed to improve your memory. There are even app based quizzes structured around
dog related flash cards, allowing the user to recall or learn dog breeds, structure, and breed standards. These can be incorporated into a fun salon educational group experience or enjoyed alone—but improving recall is an important skill when you are doing repetitive tasks daily. It will help with finishing your grooms, customer and dog name recall, handling money and registers, and ultimately allow your work to be completed with less stress. When honing your brain’s focus, remember Use It or Lose It.

Another strategy, when learning to sharpen your focus while grooming, is developing the ability to concentrate on the task in front of you. Paired closely with that skill is also the ability to center yourself, your inner voice, and learn to block the distractions around you. This is achieved through practice, at first. If you have the ability to listen to music while you groom, many Pet Stylists find that focusing on the rhythm or beat will help them collect their thoughts and slow down busy minds. Just like your brain muscle needs practice with memory and recall, it also needs similar practice learning to relax. Learn to meditate. The addition of this skill to your brain’s already busy regimen will enhance your ability to change your focus and allow you to change tasks more rapidly, move fluidly through distractions, and return to your “zone” when necessary. Take some time and learn to Tune In and Tune Out. Achieving Focus while you are grooming will not only enhance your work performance but also allow the Pet Stylist to enjoy a more relaxing experience while you are completing your tasks. It’s not a simple thing to begin practicing Focus in your daily grooming. Like any skill, gaining Focus will take repetition, rehearsal, and exercise to maintain it. By applying the three key strategies of Repetition, Use It or Lose It, and Tune In/Tune Out, you can eliminate errors and enjoy better personal performance. Begin practicing now so that when you experience a day such as Carol’s, you are ready to tackle the additional burden without compromising your Grooming. ✂

ASK THE GROOMING TUTOR by Michell Evans
HELP WANTED HIRING THE
Right Groomer Dear Michell. Our salon is so busy. We are trying to keep up with the demand but I am working fifty hours per week and my other groomers are working as much as they would like. We need to hire a groomer but we keep hiring groomers who don’t fit in and who don’t stay with us. Not to mention that their skills are not as good as my other groomers. I wonder if I will ever find the right person. I worry that my business is suffering not only because of the high turnover rate but also because we can’t get all of our customers groomed.
H
i guys. Hiring a groomer is a big deal! It changes the dynamics of how each of your employees feels and communicates in the work place. It takes a large amount of time and effort to train them, whether they are experienced or not. It is a gamble every time. Will you get a good return on your investment or will they take your time and training and move to Mars? Even when you have a good feeling about a person,

sometimes it just doesn’t work out. First, your comment that you “need to hire a groomer” is a trap! It is easy to fall into the trap of feeling desperate to hire a groomer when you are telling customers that you have no room in your schedule to groom their pet. You also might be feeling financial pressures, either business or personal, that keep you feeling desperate. It seems like telling a customer you cannot groom their pet is flat out de-

— PHIL & SARAH clining income. That can be scary, for sure, but repeatedly hiring the wrong people out of desperation is obviously not working for you either. Fight the feeling of desperation and consider everything that you can change about your financial situation to ease any pressures that you might be feeling in that area. Cutting down or eliminating your advertising expenses would be a good start. You obviously don’t need more calls

for grooming right now. Talk to your creditors about consolidating your debt and reducing interest rates. If your pressures are coming from demands that are self-imposed try to adjust your expectations and goals. Try viewing your situation as an advantage rather than a burden. It is a privilege to have more customers than you can accommodate. Many folks reading this are envious right now. Consider developing a waiting list. This makes you seem elite in the client’s eyes and can help you develop your new groomer’s clientele before you even know who you will hire. When the right groomer comes along you will have a base of clients waiting in the wings. Tell the client that you would like to add them to your waiting list and that when a spot opens up in your grooming clientele, you will notify them with an invitation that they can then RSVP to and reserve their spot. No need for them to have any more detail than that. Keep the mystery and let them think you are at capacity simply because you are just that good. Evaluate what you have to offer. What are the advantages of working for you? Use this information to advertise for your position. Do you have equipment to make their job easier? Do they have weekends off? Will they receive continuing education opportunities? Will they have opportunities to earn bonuses? Will they receive benefits? Let’s face it, groomers who are on the look-out for better opportunities are obviously lacking something in their current position. By advertising your assets you might spark interest in a groomer who is unsatisfied with their current job. During the interview process find out what they did and didn’t like about their previous jobs and keep those things in mind when developing the
position for them. One person might be motivated by abundant opportunities to earn while another might be motivated by weekends off. And keep in mind that these priorities can change over the years of a groomer’s employ. Keep communication open. As for hiring, advertising for your position on Facebook is an excellent way to reach groomers. Advertise in groups that pertain to your position. For example, if you are looking for someone who knows how to hand strip then advertise in groups whose commonality is hand stripping. Or if you are looking for groomers in a certain area advertise in groups for that area. Be sure to include as much detail about what you have to offer and what you are looking for in a groomer as possible. This helps to eliminate applicants who really are not interested in what you have to offer or don’t have the skills that you are looking for. Thereby saving you from conducting interviews that are a waste of both party’s time. Consider a working interview, where you actually have them groom a pet so that you can see their level of skill and determine how they take constructive criticism. This will also give you a glimpse at how quickly they work and how well they work under pressure. Alternatively, have them come by the salon and spend a few hours on a busy day. You can see how they interact with your other employees and best of all you can chat with them while you are grooming. Most of us are quite adept at talking and grooming. This is a great way to conduct an informal interview. Ask them questions and let them talk. The fact that you are grooming while you chat might make them feel more comfortable than they would feel in a sitdown interview. Be sure to listen to their answers and really hear what

they have to say. Remember that, even if you are in a situation where you feel desperate to fill your position immediately, (like in the case of a groomer who quit unexpectedly or who you fired) the pets that you are unable to schedule at this time will most likely come back around in search of your services. You can always do a mailing either by snail–mail or email to inform them of your new addition when the time comes to lure them back. Give yourself plenty of time to interview and hire whenever possible. Once you have made your choice, ask the other, less qualified yet considered, interviewees if you can keep their resume for the future in case the person that you chose does not work out. This might save you time and expense the next time you find yourself in need of a groomer. Avoid hiring for a permanent position initially. Hire with the understanding that there is a ninety–day trial period. This way both of you have the ability to end the employment arrangement. Don’t mess around with hirees who do not show a natural ability and/or don’t seem to be fitting into your salon culture in the first ninety days. Be a boss and tell them it just isn’t going to work. You might find yourself avoiding firing them only to have them drain your spirit and/or wreak havoc on your salon’s culture. Good luck finding the right fit! ✂ I am a multi-Best-In-Show and Best-AllAround groomer. I am the recipient of many Barkleigh Honors Awards including journalist of the year. I am a Silver and Gold medalist for GroomTeam USA. I am the winner of Show Dog Groomer of the Year 2015. etQuest is one of the most fun trade shows and grooming competitions of the year. Taking place in the beautiful setting of Wilmington, OH, it has always been a favorite of mine. The excitement and enthusiasm of the vendors and attendees make this show come alive! It was very busy with lots to buy and grooming competitions to watch—no one sat still for very long, unless you were in a seminar of course. There were wonderful speakers lined up as always, from Dr. Cliff Faver to Victor Rosado and everyone in between. You could learn everything you need to know from salon clips to business tips, this show had it all!

The facility is always so clean and the staff is as friendly as could be. One of my favorite things about the convention grounds is the large fenced area for your dogs to run and play in the grass and have some fun. If you go out in the evenings, the backdrop of the sunset is one of the most beautiful you could see and a great photo op for your pampered pups. If you are out there at dusk you may even catch a glimpse of fireflies which reflects the magic of the day happening inside the trade show! If you have not been to PetQuest yet, make sure to mark it in your calendar for next year. Hope to see you there!

P.A. 98-101, EFF. 1-1-14 THIS IS A SECTION OF THE ILLINOIS HUMANE CARE FOR ANIMALS ACT. YOU SEE THERE IS A LENGTHY SECTION ON TETHERING. WHAT I AM GOING TO ADDRESS IS SECTION (3). (510 ILCS 70/3) (FROM CH. 8, PAR. 703) Sec. 3. Owner’s duties. (a) Each owner shall provide for each of his or her animals: (1) a sufficient quantity of good quality, wholesome food and water; (2) adequate shelter and protection from the weather; (3) veterinary care when needed to prevent suffering; (4) humane care and treatment. (b) To lawfully tether a dog outdoors, an owner must ensure that the dog: (1) does not suffer from a condition that is known by that person, to be exacerbated by tethering; (2) is tethered in a manner that will prevent it from becoming entangled with other tethered dogs; (3) is not tethered with a lead that (i) exceeds one–eighth of the dog’s body weight or (ii) is a tow chain or a log chain; (4) is tethered with a lead that measures, when rounded to the nearest whole foot, at least 10 feet in length; (5) is tethered with a properly fitting harness or collar other than the lead or a pinch, prong, or choke–type collar; and (6) is not tethered in a manner that will allow it to reach within the property of another person, a public walkway, or a road. (c) Subsection (b) of this Section shall not be construed to prohibit: (1) a person from walking a dog with a hand–held leash; (2) conduct that is directly related to the cultivating of agricultural products, including shepherding or herding cattle or livestock, if the restraint is reasonably necessary for the safety of the dog; (3) the tethering of a dog while at an organized and lawful animal function, such as hunting, obedience training, performance and conformance events, or law enforcement training, or while in the pursuit of working or competing in those endeavors; or (4) a dog restrained in compliance with the requirements of a camping or recreational area as defined by a federal, State, or local authority or jurisdiction. EGLECT of Owners' Duties I E by Robyn Michaels e
think most of us wonder what we can do about the violation of section a (3): veterinary care to prevent suffering. When I first started my grooming career in the early 1970s, I worked for a dog groomer who would give her clients an ‘ultimatum’ after she told them twice the dog needed veterinary attention: no new appointment until the dog’s medical issue had been dealt with. Twice I remember, it was dogs with bad teeth. Once it was a runny eye (related to teeth). The dogs immediately gained weight and seemed livelier. THEY WERE NO LONGER IN PAIN. We were not the only game in town. These clients could have gone elsewhere. They didn’t. Unfortunately, I know too many groomers who will tell a client once, then ignore the issue because they are afraid they are going to lose the client (as though no other groomer is going to mention that the dog has an ear infection so bad that pus is coming out and the skin has necrosis).
Disgusting, aggravating, infuriating. I am a volunteer for a wonderful organization founded by a couple of dog trainers. The organization is SafeHumaneChicago.org. It was founded to address animal cruelty and its effects on our community. We provide dog training classes in underserved communities, work with kids (and adults) in the justice system, and we volunteer as advocates for animals in the court system. Setting this program up took years. We had to find friendly police, judges, and prosecutors who could understand that cruelty and violence towards humans often starts with animal cruelty. We had to explain the laws, and how to interpret and enforce the laws. We had to get prosecutors to take animal crime seriously…and we continue having problems with police not gathering adequate evidence. We do get people charged, and prosecuted. As I was writing this,

charges were filed on a family whose home was filled with feces. Three dogs were confiscated (the police had been called on suspected domestic violence). We get people like you and me, volunteer court advocates, to show up in court on behalf of the animals. We wear court advocate badges, and we make sure the judges know we are there. Generally, the charge of ‘neglect of owners' duties’ is an added charge, to dog fighting, other cruelty, or hoarding. Recently, however, a veterinarian had a client charged. An older couple brought a dog into his animal hospital in a buggy. Not sure why they brought the dog in, but the dog was wearing a diaper which hadn’t been changed in…. nobody knows how long. The dog, of course, had feces burning his skin. How many clients do we see with

feces stuck to the dog, or eyes sealed shut, or necrotic ears? Dogs with rotting teeth? It’s not just puppy mills, and we know it. I’ve had dogs come in with maggots. We are afraid to turn these people in to local humane officers, aren’t we? I have told clients that their dog is in pain. I’ve suggested they contact local animal shelters which I know will treat dogs at a reduced cost if money is the issue. You know there has to be a psychological problem on the part of the owner when, six months later, they bring the dog back to you, and the dog is still in horrendous condition. Because I keep a reminder calendar, I’ve started noting on my calendar when I hope to see the dog again. If the dog doesn’t come in, I contact humane officers to do a well–being check. I am nearing retirement and don’t really care if I anger someone who doesn’t have the integrity to euthanize a dog in pain if they won’t have a veterinarian treat the dog. I’d like to know if any groomers have had any other solutions. ✂

Grooming can make a big difference in the lives of pets, and in some cases, it may even save lives. For New York dog and cat groomer, Mark Imhof, also known as “Mark the Dog Guy,” It was a pit bull named Cleo that started him on the path to becoming a groomer for shelter animals in desperate need of his services. 30

mhof and his fiance had two small dogs when they decided to adopt a third dog. “We adopted our first pit bull through Susie’s Senior Dogs,” says Imhof. Susie’s Senior Dogs is an organization with a mission to bring awareness to overlooked senior pets in need of a home. After bringing Cleo home, Imhof quickly realized that she would need a bath sooner than later. “When we brought her home, she was just filthy,” he says. “So, the first thing that I did was give her a bath.” Washing Cleo in his tub and seeing the difference that a good bath made for her was a transformative process that gave Imhof an idea which stayed with him. Imhof thought about the difference that grooming could make for shelter dogs and how it could potentially even make them more adoptable. When the couple adopted another pit bull named Fenton, Imhof yet again brought home a sweet dog in need of a good scrub. At the time, Imhof was coming to the end of a consulting job and his fiance saw how happy the dogs made him. He found joy in washing the dogs and with support and encouragement from his fiance, Imhof decided to go

It was a big change and he had a lot to learn. “I went through the American Academy of Pet Grooming,” says Imhof. During his time in school, Imhof would spend full days working with dogs. When he started the program he was taught the basics of grooming from the ground up, learning how to wash, dry, prep, and handle dogs. Learning about breed standard cuts,
anatomy, health, and safety were also important parts of his schooling. Imhof soon began clipping dogs and doing full haircuts. Imhof found that he enjoyed grooming, but even more than that, he enjoyed seeing how much of a difference grooming made for animals. He knew he had to go on to help animals in need. After graduating from grooming school, Imhof approached the Animal Care Center where he had adopted Fenton, his second pit bull from, offering his grooming services

on a volunteer basis. The first dog he volunteered to groom for the Animal Care Center was severely matted and clearly uncomfortable. “He was totally hunched over. He couldn’t walk very well,” says Imhof. “Once I got under that matted fur and started cutting it away he started to relax.” At that moment Imhof knew that there was no turning back. Since then, he has helped hundreds of shelter animals, and his work has been featured on sites such as The Huffington Post, Upworthy, and many others. Seeing how the dogs transform after they are groomed is more than enough motivation for him to keep volunteering and doing whatever he can to help animals in need. Grooming shelter animals is far from an easy job. The animals come from all different situations and many times when they end up at the shelter they are in very poor condition. Dogs that are matted to the skin and afraid to be handled are a common challenge, but Imhof has found ways to help the dogs cope with the process. “If I’m calm, then the dog will be calm,” he explains. “I have done some meditation classes,” he says. While grooming, Imhof thinks back to the techniques that are involved with mediating to keep himself in a totally calm state of mind. Currently, Imhof spends a lot of his time volunteering to groom shelter animals and is even an on–call groomer for area shelters. He also balances work as a Certified Public Accountant and grooms professionally for customers in the comfort of their own homes. “The feeling I get working with the animals is just such a gratification and joy,” says Imhof. Sometimes the animals are not easy to groom

but even if they try to bite or scratch, Imhof remains calm knowing that he will be able to help them. His job is to free them of painful mats and help them feel better than they may have felt in a very long time. Imhof ’s reason for learning to groom was inspired by his desire to help shelter animals and he has no regrets for making the choice to pursue it. When it comes to grooming, his advice for anyone considering it for a career is simple. “Follow your heart,” he says. There are hundreds of animals and there will be many others that are fortunate that Imhof did just that. ✂

et EVERY PET HAS A STORY E by Kathy Hosler e
It is estimated that between six and seven million animals will go into a shelter this year. Many of them will never leave it alive. Three to four million of the pets that enter a shelter will ultimately be euthanized.

any animals that wind up in shelters have done nothing wrong. Their owners divorce or move and can’t take the pet with them, a new baby enters the family, or someone becomes allergic to the pet. In other cases the pet has too much energy, the cute little puppy grew too large, or it sheds too much. We have all heard stories like this. That’s why the need for animal rescue groups has never been greater. “Behind every shelter dog’s eyes is a story,” says Danielle Rebisz of Emerald City Rescue Inc. (www.

emeraldcityrescuenj.com) in Glasser, New Jersey. “They just need the right person to believe in them.” “We partner with shelters. The shelters often keep the highly adoptable dogs and give us the ones with issues or health problems. Most shelters just don’t have the time to devote to these dogs,” Danielle continues. “Our rescue will take the pets and put them in foster care where they will be loved and cherished and can truly thrive. In this way we can learn their true personalities and help match them with the right for-

ever homes.” Rescue organizations can help pets that are going through difficult circumstances in ways that shelters can’t. Take the case of Lucy. Lucy was hit by a car and had a badly broken leg. The owners were going to have her put to sleep. A caring neighbor stepped in and contacted a rescue. They accepted Lucy, got her the surgery she needed, and placed her in a foster home while she recovered. Ultimately, Lucy was adopted into a loving home and given a second chance at life. Most animal shelters don’t have the time or re-

Some rescues are small, while others care for hundreds of pets a day. “Our rescue was started by two single moms who had a passion for animals,” says Dorothy Ochotny, President of Furever Yours Rescue in Maple Glen, Pa. “We travel to southern states to save dogs from high volume kill shelters. find new homes for these pets.” The adoption procedure for most rescues begins with the prospective adopter filling out an application. Then there is usually an interview with them, and often a home visit is scheduled. After they have been approved, a meet–and–greet is set up between the adopter and the pet. Although all of these steps are necessary to make sure that the pets are going to good homes, this process can be quite time consuming. I could just go somewhere else, buy a pet, and take it home immediately.” To help streamline the process of matching pets with people, many rescue organizations use their websites and other social media to display photos of the available animals, and viewers have the ability to fill out an adoption application online. “We don’t just want to find some-

To showcase the wwork that animal rescues are doing and to aid pets in finding new homes, a lot of pet industry shows are featuring events such as the Rescue Roundup competitions. In these contests, pets supplied from local rescue organizations are groomed. The exposure the pets receive, along with a beautiful new groom helps them to find forever homes. And, the rescue organizations get publicity for the lifesaving work they are doing. How can you help rescue groups? You can become a volunteer and help feed, walk, and care for the pets in rescue. Volunteers are the backbone of rescue success. You can also provide your grooming, training, or boarding and daycare services free or at a reduced rate. There is always a huge need for foster homes. If you can’t foster, you could sponsor a pet. Rescues are always in need of pet food and treats, cleaning supplies, crates, leads and collars, and towels and blankets. And, of course, there is always a great need for monetary donations. “Basically, the more money we take in, the more pets we can help,” says Theresa Huber. Yes, every pet has a story. at As part of my business model, I have implemented an incentive to owners of recently adopted cats in the area. When a cat is rescued from any local shelter, I offer my initial service for free. This has proven to be a win-win approach in gaining customers as well as caring for their new family member for years to come.
I
f offering a service for free isn’t feasible in your salon, maybe you could offer a special price or add an additional service. Shelter cats come in all sizes, shapes, breeds, ages, disabilities, backgrounds and temperaments. It’s refreshing for me not knowing what’s coming in next. The new owner may give me a brief summary about the cat’s behavior when making the first appointment, but it’s something entirely different once you have that cat on your table. You need to be

able to “read” the body language and understand the nonverbal cues that all cats give us. Once you master that, grooming them is a piece of cake. The grooming needs of a recently adopted cat can be time consuming and may call for some added patience on my part. The cat may be excessively nervous or frightened, rightfully so, but by me taking baby steps and working within the cat’s limits can set the stage for a lifelong furry friend and a loyal customer. It is all about gaining the trust of the cat by not pushing him out of his comfort zone. The first appointment may include a simple combing and a nail trim or partial nail trim. Maybe that is all the cat can tolerate this time. There are times I’ll comb this type of cat while they are cradled in their owner’s lap. It’s all about caring and

On the other hand, there are the “nosey roseys” of the cat world that come in for their first professional groom. These kitties are the outgoing ones who want to explore this new environment and couldn’t care less of my giving them a bath as long as they can grip the side of my tub and look around. They are so distracted at this new surrounding that they eagerly comply with my continued grooming. These initial visits also help cultivate a dialog between me and the owners about the benefits of maintaining the coat at home. I always suggest they buy a comb and nail trimmer while they’re here, and most of them do. I demonstrate the proper techniques and have them comb their cat so they become comfortable with the comb. Am I trying to make more money by selling them a comb? Yes, but just as important, I’m helping them get a feel for handling their pet and into the routine of combing. care for their cat. If anything, I have gained their trust and respect and these clients soon become regulars. Both cats and owners can benefit from each other during the mini–grooming at home. I recommend that the comb be placed by the TV remote so it’s easily accessible. My motto is “when opportunity presents itself, take advantage of it”. Meaning, if the comb is at the ready and the cat comes over for attention, the situation is perfect to let the bonding begin. All in all rescued cats may need a bit more patience from us, but when given a chance they can prove to be wonderful additions to our salons. I feel that I have accomplished a great feat when a new cat returns and remembers me. That trusted relationship is appreciated by both of us. If you haven’t already, introduce yourself to your local rescue groups and get paid by head-butts until they are adopted. Once adopted, their owners may very well seek you out based on the rescue’s referral. ✂

P
et grooming is a unique career, and because of that, we have the opportunity to gain knowledge from many places. One of the most important being Conformation shows. Conformation shows, or Dog shows, were created to evaluate the breeding stock for each breed recognized by a kennel club. The dogs that placed at shows and finished their Championship would be the ones bred to create the next generation. The dogs are judged not only on structure, but movement, coat type and, to a lesser extent, groom.

All of the requirements a dog must meet to make it close to the ideal specimen of its breed are listed in the Breed standard, which is created by its parent club. The parent club and breed standard also provide information on how the breed should be groomed. By attending dog shows you can keep abreast of the most current styles each breed is sporting. These trims are what each of your pet grooms should be based off of. Attending a Conformation show and watching each breed, as it should be seen, will educate you as to what different breeds leaving your salon
should resemble. A step further is learning to correctly do show grooming on different breeds. Whenever grooming show dogs is brought up near a group of pet groomers, it’s often stated “But I don’t groom show dogs. I groom pets.” That’s probably true, but the very standard of how they should look is found on show dogs. We all understand that many pets do not exhibit the quality of well– bred show dogs, but there is no reason we can’t strive to make them look as close as possible to the breed standard. There are more benefits to learning breed standard grooming than just the patterns. Many techniques can be crossed over to enhance your pet grooms and add flare. Anne Francis, an award winning groomer, who shows her Kerry Blue Terrier and American Cocker Spaniel says, “One of the biggest things I’ve learned is to think [about] when a dog is going to move. I can cut out hair, that if a dog [were] walking, [would make] the legs look funny (poodle armpits for example.) Competition and showing dogs have helped my pet grooming tremendously.” Rebecca Stahl NCMG, who shows Welsh Terriers and grooms some of the top Spinone Italianos, adds “Just by being at the shows you learn what breeds are supposed to look like and [that] can translate into a shorter, more manageable, but still correct pet clip.” One technique she recommends for pet grooming is Handstripping. “All wire coats can benefit from some form of carding or stripping to make their coats healthier.” Karen Tucker, past GroomTeam member, has been breeding and showing Miniature Poodles for 27 years. She tells us “I try to balance my pet trims and correct as many flaws as I can, just as I would on a show dog.” And one technique she thinks works well in pet

Learning the grooming techniques used on different breeds can change cookie cutter styles on mutts to something exciting and different for your clients. grooming is this: “Using a comb with thinning shears on the flat [work], like you would on a sporting dog.” Heather Roozee says, “Show grooming absolutely has improved my pet grooming! Knowing structure and profile basics makes it easy to put a small touch on a pet that will make your groom stand out from the rest.” The benefit of being able to add special touches to your grooms is simply invaluable when there are so many groomers for your clients to choose from. Learning the grooming tech-
niques used on different breeds can change cookie cutter styles on mutts to something exciting and different for your clients. “I think it’s the fact that every dog I do is in a modified breed trim of some sort. I have straight up mutts that are handstripped into Australian Terrier patterns, Doodles in Bedlington trims, and the list goes on. When I [did] Asian fusion bevels I was able to do them easily because I knew how to do American Cocker bevels.” —Blake Hernandez What about breeds that don’t
have sculpted trims, but rather look more natural? Stefanie Thellman says, “I’m definitely better at scissoring pads, ears and tails since getting into [Australian Shepherds]. It’s a different mentality to do minimal grooming and try to leave as much hair as possible.” Many breeds that appear ungroomed in the show ring actually have a lot of grooming time put into them. But the techniques used to make it look natural are very different from those used on a sculpted dog, like a Bichon Frise. Learning these techniques can help make simple trim-ups sparkle. By integrating show grooming into your pet grooms you can improve the look and style of your trims. You will also have something unique to offer your clientele with the knowledge that you gain by learning as many techniques as you can. ✂

SHAV E SCIENCE: THE
FACTS ABOUT There is an ongoing battle raging. Shaving down dogs and cats is probably one of the most controversial topics there is in the grooming industry so I wanted to shed some light on the scientific side of the debate.
T
his is not a judgement of those who shave nor a vindication of those who choose not to shave, but a presentation of the mechanisms of the hair and function of the skin so that we, as groomers, may make an educated decision when presented with a pet whose owner would like a shave. Here are some researched facts about the hair and skin of pets. First things first, let’s define what “shaving” means. This term actually means something different depending on what type of coat you are dealing with. For short coats like Dalmatians, Pugs, Labrador Retrievers and Rottweilers, shaving means any clipper work that takes the natural lay of the hair off of the

body. Partial shaving of the throat, sanitary, ears and pads (with a #7 or shorter) are minimally damaging to the skin. For double coated animals such as Pomeranians, Chow Chows, Golden Retrievers, etc., shaving means any length taken off that makes the primary hair the same length as the secondary hair as this then defeats the protective layering of the double coat. Long coats should be left with enough hair to cover the skin completely. The hair or fur of any animal is an extension of the skin and is an integral part of the pets’ mechanism of protection from the outside world. The hair is a natural wind and sun barrier and is essential in the move-

ment of oils across the skin. Each hair follicle is attached to a muscle called the Erector Pili that raises and lowers the hair in a complex ventilation system to keep the pet cool in summer and warm in winter. Dogs are seven times more absorbent than humans and cats are 30 times more absorbent. This means that when the hair is removed, there is a greater chance of toxins, chemicals and other environmental pollutants to be absorbed into the body because there is no barrier to prevent it. Cat hair is so dense because their skin is very thin and needs the thickest layer of protection possible. When a substance is put directly on cat skin, it goes into the bloodstream and the

Melanin, or the pigment in human skin that gets darker as we tan, protects us from UV rays but does not function the same way in dogs and cats. K9 and Feline melanin resides in the cortex of the hair shaft so the skin has no UV protection when the hair is removed. In dogs and cats, Pheomelanin (redheads) and Eumelanin (everyone else) lives in the cortex of the primary hair shaft not the skin. This can be seen
on a double coat the best by parting the hair and seeing the richly colored hairs as opposed to the “diluted” secondary hairs. There are 2 major shedding times of the year that happen during the Solstices, June 21 and December 21. Off season shedding should be minimal in a hydrated, healthy coat. Large amounts of off season shedding can happen when the coat is too dry and it breaks off or there is an underlying issue causing Alopecia or hair loss. The first issue can be

alleviated with extra hydration treatments while the second needs to be explored by a veterinarian. “Bad skin” is a sign of imbalance and needs a hair covering to protect the skin and keep it properly oiled. A shorter length of hair will not reduce contact allergies. Regular and proper cleansing of the skin is the only thing that will reduce the irritant that is sticking to your pet. Shaving causes the hair to fall out in small sharp pieces that aggravate itching and allergies.

Enthusiasts of wire coated dogs know that clipping the hair instead of stripping it will result in a loss of color and texture in the coat as the primary hairs are damaged over a long period of time of being shaved. Comedones and clogged follicles can actually be caused by shaving wire coats without carding and stripping out the dead hairs before clipping takes place. Wire coats have hair follicles that grow very deeply in the skin. The new hair growth does not push the old hairs out, instead, they grow beside the old hairs until they are pulled out by the groomer. When old hairs aren’t stripped out or carded and the breed pattern is clippered, the skin can actually grow over the follicles, trapping the hair and creating the “bumps” that we see
on the skin of these types of coats. Enthusiasts of wire coated dogs know that clipping the hair instead of stripping it will result in a loss of color and texture in the coat as the primary hairs are damaged over a long period of time of being shaved. Drop coats like Shih Tzu and Maltese, for example, do not experience the same issues that double, short and wire coats have. These coats should not be clipped so short that skin is showing as to give them enough of a hair layer to block UV rays. Shaving backwards on a short,
wire or double coat with a stiffly held primary hair, results in a possible breakage of the erector pili, the muscle that is responsible for movement of the hair in the follicle. And working these types of coats backwards pulls the “back” of the follicle open and may allow bacteria or fungus to slip inside. Drop and curly coats that are fluff dried normally have a very weak muscle, which means that the hair can be worked in any direction without damaging the growing part of the follicle. There are some very good

achieved for the well–being of the pet and your peace of mind. In conclusion, there are many fact–based arguments to make a groomer rethink their position on the shaving issue. The best way to help you help your client in the decision-making process about shaving is to know the facts and be able to communicate these facts to your client without making them feel as if they are doing something wrong. There are several publications that are made for groomers to give to their clients, as well as charts and research papers that can be used as teaching tools. One of the easiest ways to help your client understand the science behind your reasoning is to give them a brochure with a gentle suggestion to read it in their spare time. Many owners just want what they want and they will go elsewhere if you don’t give them their desired trim. I would rather treat the skin gently and re-oil the pet after shaving than have them go somewhere else and perhaps get a less desirable trim and skin issues on top of that. Hopefully this knowledge will give you the information you need to make educated decisions about when and how you shave in your salon. ✂

IN THE
GROOMING SHOP E by Mary Oquendo e
“There but for the grace of God go I.”
– John Bradford
How many times have we said this to ourselves when we hear of a tragedy in another groomer’s shop? But how many of us are really prepared to handle that situation? TRAGEDY CAN COME IN MANY DIFFERENT FORMS: • Motor vehicle accident (Mobile Groomers) • Pet escaping from your car • A pet getting injured, or worse, dying in your facility • Client injured by any pet, including their own, or tripping and falling on your property • A groomer heading off to the emergency room due to any number of reasons And those are just a couple of possible scenarios.
HOW DOES TRAGEDY HAPPEN? • Motor vehicle accidents in your

mobile unit happen due to poor road conditions or distracted drivers. I have personally seen people reading books, applying makeup, and playing games on their phone while driving. I try not to drive near them. • A groomer not paying attention to body language or where our tools begin and the pet ends because they’ve been doing this for so many years and have never had an accident before, and so have become complacent or over confident. • Inexperienced groomers without proper supervision or education are given tasks that he or she is unprepared for. • Owners not being truthful about

any medical condition, which may be exacerbated by grooming. • Groomers agreeing to de–mat a pet even though it may be unsafe to do so, not informing the owners of the risks associated, or not requiring owners to sign matted releases. Shop owners turning a blind eye to possible physical dangers to clients, pets, or employees. And sometimes, there is no one to blame. Accidents happen.
WE CAN REDUCE THE LIKELIHOOD OF TRAGEDIES HAPPENING BY: • Mobile groomers paying attention when driving and rescheduling clients when road conditions warrant it. Many

You will be able to relay to the owner the steps that you have already taken. • Talking with your insurance specialist (not agent) at your insurance company to ensure proper and adequate coverage for any and all possibilities.
AFTER TRAGEDY HAPPENS: • Debrief your staff. Early in my career, a young employee was helping me cut an overexcited dog’s nails. I held, she clipped. Well, she clipped so short, the nail had to be cauterized at the vet. She went into shock. Stood there with the nail clippers in hand and didn’t move. The owner and I were busy attending to the pet and didn’t notice her distress. She quit the next day. A debriefing with her before she left for the day would have gone a long way in helping her cope with what happened.

A debriefing is simply discussing the incident, how she felt, and what could have been done to prevent it from happening again. It is feasible for a groomer to experience PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.) • Prepare for social media backlash. If you don’t have a professional social media manager, become friends with one. You will need their advice in such an event. Never respond immediately. That’s the mistake United Airlines made when one of their passengers was beat up when they refused to give up their seat. United disregarded the advice of their social media team and deflected blame right onto the victim. If you feel the need to respond quickly, run your response through the many Facebook groups you belong to first. If the reactions get out of hand, you may have to retain the services of a lawyer. GROOMING MATTERS by Daryl Conner
THE IMPORTANCE OF
“H
ow can I groom faster?” This is a question both newer and more seasoned groomers often ask me. My first, best answer is this; develop a routine and stick with it. You can and should create a method of doing things that makes sense to you and works well for you, but if you’d like an example,
68
here is the routine I follow on almost every dog that I groom: • Bathe the dog first. The only time I pre-clip is if the dog is so horribly matted that shampoo and water will not get to the skin, or if it’s a regular shave–down groom that has a thick coat and is difficult to dry. These are rare events.

• Clean the ears. I clean the ears right in the tub and just after the bath so if any water got in the ears, the cleaner will dry it out. • Towel dry. • Trim and buff nails. I do this while the dog is still wet so if a nail is quicked and I must rinse the paw off, I can catch it before I spend time

drying. I also count to 5 on each dog, trimming the regulation 4 claws most dogs have, and checking for random dew claws on each leg. • Spritz the coat with a drying enhancing spray. Speed Dry or Quick Dry really do help dogs dry faster. I dislike spending a lot of time drying pets, so I go through a lot of this stuff! • Lightly brush the coat to distribute the spray and open the coat. • Dry the pet with a high velocity dryer. • Brush and comb, removing every single knot, tangle, and as much dead coat as possible. • For Poodles, Bichons, and other dogs with a curly coat, I may go over them again with the HV dryer or a heated dryer to make sure the coat is set. That is the prep work routine. Next

is the grooming part of the routine: • Using my trimmer, I tidy up eye corners (when needed) and then trim paw pads and sanitary area. I refer to this as “face, feet and fanny.” If the armpits are matted, I zip those mats out while I am at it. Taking care of all the things I use my trimmer for at once is a time saver. Think of it this way, each time you pick up and put down a tool, you are wasting valuable time. • Basic body trimming. Since I mostly groom pets, this usually means doing a good bit of clipper work. Years ago, I invested in a Clipper Vac© system. Because of this I groom most pets with a snap on comb, leaving a lovely plush finish. I rarely need to go over any area more than once, another time saver. This is where you realize the importance of

good brushing/prep work. If you are finding tangles as you clip, you will be wasting time by going back to rebrush and comb the areas you missed. • Scissoring feet. Next, I trim all the feet using my curved shears. • Put those curves to work. While those curved scissors are in my hot little hand, I trim anything else I want to use them for. This could mean trimming the tail, neatening up the ears, or any other things that require that tool. • Re–comb body and legs, and go over the dog with scissors to trim any areas that need it. • Groom the head. I almost always save the head for last, so I can balance it with the body. • Stand back. Years ago, when I was pursuing certification, one of my examiners hammered into me the
importance of standing back to look at the pet before I called the job done. You get a whole new perspective of the groom when you look at it from a slight distance, and you will almost always see a little something that needs tweaking before the pet goes home. Because I have invested in good grooming tools, and follow a set pattern on each pet, I am able to completely groom most small to medium sized dogs in just one hour. So how does working this way improve speed? Doing things in the same pattern reduces guess work. Never again will you get to wondering if you trimmed a dog’s nails after it has gone home if you set up a methodical plan. If you are interrupted mid–groom, you can easily remember what you have already done, because

and feel more comfortable when they know what to expect next. each task is tackled in a familiar order. Establishing a consistent pattern also makes you work more efficiently. And guess what? When you work efficiently you naturally save time. If you have bathing staff or other groomers working for you, setting up an orderly routine in which basic grooming tasks are completed means that you know those tasks were completed on each pet, no matter who did the work. And here is another important reason that working in an established structure is helpful: Pets that
you groom on a regular basis will learn your system. Dogs thrive on routine, and feel more comfortable when they know what to expect next. I was reminded of this fact yesterday when I was grooming Midas. Midas is an anxious dog with a bite history, but he is unfailingly good for me to groom. For some reason, yesterday I forgot to trim his nails when I usually do them. I kept reminding myself, “Don’t forget his claws.” But I did forget, until I had put his collar on and set him on the floor. Then I
had to lift him back up and do the trimming. He was decidedly unhappy about this, and struggled for the process, when normally he does not. Doing your work consistently will help you develop your skills, and it will also help you to build momentum throughout your day. Don’t believe me? I challenge you to put some thought into a structured manner of grooming each pet. Try it for two weeks and see if your speed is increased. I’m willing to venture that you will be pleased with the end results. ✂

he English Springer Spaniel and the English Cocker Spaniel, although originating together, gained distinction in the early 1900’s with the Kennel Club of England. The American Kennel Club went on to recognize the English Springer Spaniel into the sporting group about eight years later. The English Springer Spaniel sports a short, soft undercoat and a longer, firmer and darker outer coat of medium length. The proper coat is naturally laid-back and is best treated with hand stripping and carding techniques. The dense under coat is carded and raked and some of the outer coat is stripped to form a functional, natural appearance. I find it easier to do the bulk of carding and stripping techniques prior to bathing and complete the

finishing and detail work after the bath. If the dog is very dirty, however, a pre-bath should not affect the efficiency or outcome as greatly as it would with the wire coated breeds. For the preparation procedures, bath with a quality shampoo and condition the furnishings. Dry the body coat flat, following the coat growth direction or optimally, secure a towel over the coat to coax it into laying as flat as possible. Shave the pads with a 15 blade. Shaving the underwear (sanitary) is optional, but I do usually clip around the rectum. Trim the nails and clean the ears. A
new program titled Pet Pro Panel Discussion will make its debut on Monday afternoon, for those coming in early and wanting to be a part of a round– table type of discussion on all things boarding and daycare. This four hour program will feature four industry experts there to answer your questions and share some tips to help you be proactive in any situation. The Monday evening Keynote address, which is free to all attendees, will feature special guest Christine Russell, president of Camp Bow Wow. This is a great opportunity to learn
some trade secrets and industry insights that helped make Camp Bow Wow the largest boarding and daycare franchise in the country. Brand new programs continue Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Some of the new two hour programs include Laura Laaman’s Four Pillars of Success, Amanda Crook’s Managing Risks with Off-Leash Play, Lisa Aumiller’s Winning Protocols for a Safe Kennel, and Amber Burckhalter’s Safety and Evaluations in the Daycare Space. Among the new four hour programs are Pet Lover to Pet Care Business Owner: Financing, Building a Business
Plan, Design and Equipment, which features three industry experts to walk you through the process of building a new facility—from financing all the way to choosing equipment. Also, Amanda Crook and Sara Beth Pinson’s Attracting, Developing, & Retaining Exceptional Animal Care Staff, which is an extensive program on finding the right staff members, proper staff training techniques and how to retain valuable staff members. Are you wanting to add some certificates to your wall? This year’s expo also features two certificate programs. Get certified in Pet First Aid & CPR on Tuesday afternoon with Jill Pipino. Tuesday morning we are debuting Dr. Courtney Campbell’s Heroes for Healthy Pets which is a certification in infectious disease management. We rearranged our Wednesday class schedule to allow for more trade show time. Two hour classes in the morning and then two hour classes in the evening frees up six whole hours to get the most out of the trade show. The trade show will also be open all day Thursday so you’ll have plenty of chances to visit all of your favorite vendors, in the new larger trade show hall! Also, be sure to sign up for the Round Table Luncheons, held on Wednesday & Thursday, which will give you a chance to swap stories and ideas with some of your industry peers. The luncheons are included in certain packages or can be purchased separately. Whether you’re opening a new facility, bringing in your staff for some education, or just want to stay current with all things boarding and daycare— you’re not going to want to miss this year’s Pet Boarding & Daycare Expo!
