Grooming Matters
10 GROOMING MYTHS, D
EBU N KED by Daryl Conner
False collective beliefs can be found everywhere— even in the pet grooming industry. Some are funny, some make us shake our heads in disbelief and others are just incredibly frustrating. So, after some brainstorming with other groomers, I came up with a list of grooming- and pet-related myths that have been around too long and need debunking.

Groomer to Groomer • Vol 41 Ed 4 • April 2022

1
Washing dogs too often will dry out their skin and coat. This common myth can be found in many breed-specific books. Owners are cautioned to only wash their dog if necessary, and certainly not more than every few months. When customers ask about this, I point out that the glowingly-healthy, beautiful dogs they see trotting around show rings are often bathed weekly, and some more frequently than that. Then I explain that modern, high-quality pet shampoos are designed to be gentle on the skin and coat while washing away dirt, sebum and dander. I also talk about the importance of conditioning the coat after bathing.
2
Pet Shampoo is a different pH than human products. Grooming educator Barbara Bird handily slew this myth years ago, but many groomers still widely accepted it. Bird tested the pH of over 50 products and charted the pH levels. Her study also inlcudes everything you ever wanted to 1 know about pH in pet shampoos.

Smooth-coated dogs shed less than other breeds.
Some breeds (or mixes) of dogs are hypoallergenic.
Shedding is the result of the animal’s hair growth cycle. Short hair has a brief growth cycle. So, from the time it emerges from the follicle until it dies and sheds out, this is the short period. This explains why Pugs, Dobermans, Dalmatians and other dogs with short coats shed a lot! On a similar note, many people (even some groomers) don’t believe that short-haired dogs need professional grooming. Indeed, regular bathing, brushing, ear and nail care are essential for smooth-coated breeds.
People who suffer from canine allergies may have less of a reaction to some dogs than others, but there is no genuinely hypoallergenic dog breed. In most cases, the dog’s dander and saliva are the culprits that cause people to have adverse reactions, and all breeds produce dander and “drool.” Low-shedding breeds may produce less dander than higher-shedding breeds and may be more 2 tolerable for some people.
5
Some breeds (or mixes) do not shed. If a dog has hair, it will shed. For example, dogs with long hair (e.g., Old English Sheepdogs, Shih Tzu and Poodles) have hair that may stay in the growth (anagen) phase for several years, but this means that shedding is barely noticeable, not nonexistent.
6
Dogs that are part Poodle do not shed. Dogs mixed with Poodles are subject to the whim of genetics. Some “doodle” mixes shed very little (see #5), but others shed just as much as the Golden, Labrador, Bernese Mountain Dog or other shedding breeds that make up the rest of the dog’s gene pool.
7
Cats bathe themselves.
While it is true that cats spend a lot of time licking their coats, it is not the equivalent of a good bath. Many cats benefit from professional grooming. A proper shampoo, conditioning, fluff-dry and combout leave cats looking, feeling and smelling amazing.

Dogs don’t need to be groomed as often in the winter. May pet owners believe their dogs need to go longer between grooming appointments when the weather is cold to make sure they stay warm. The problem with this logic is that stretching the time between grooming visits often results in matted fur. Matted fur does not insulate well and may trap moisture, causing the dog to feel the chill even more. Besides this, tangles pull and are uncomfortable for the pet. If the dog wears a sweater or coat, it increases the chance of mats forming unless the pet owner is very dedicated with a brush and comb. I encourage my customers to keep their pets on regular appointments, especially if they want to leave the fur longer for cold weather.
9
Using a conditioner makes dogs dry more slowly. According to grooming educator Christein Pearson, this myth probably “started back in the day when our limited choices for topical conditioners typically had a lot of heavy, waxy ingredients that took forever to completely rinse out and typically coated the hair leaving it limp and oily. Formulators have since moved away from such ingredients.” Instead, modern conditioners smooth the cuticle, allowing water to be blown out of the coat more efficiently.
10
OUR BANDANAS FETCH COMPLIMENTS!
Puppies should not get their hair cut until they are at least six months old. This is a myth that every groomer I know would love to see become extinct. I encourage customers to bring puppies in as soon as they have their second set of vaccines, even if it’s for nothing more than a nail trim, a treat and some affectionate pats on the grooming table. Early, regular visits help acclimate puppies to the grooming process. If the pet owner wants the puppy to be groomed but the coat left long, that is perfectly fine. Teaching the puppy bathtub and table manners is beneficial in shaping behavior for the rest of the dog’s life. However, if the owner wants the pup’s hair to be trimmed, no harm will come.

Myths are memorable and persistent. Debunking them can be tricky. The next time you are presented with a grooming myth, try to help the person sharing it learn the truth. Maybe we can even finally slay that one about puppies not needing to be groomed until they are old enough to go to college. & References: 1. The pH of Pet & Human Shampoos. (2012, Sept., 29). When the pet is finished and ready to go home, the procedure is reversed, and the owner takes them out of the building. Corky had been groomed at Jill's salon his entire life, and his owners loved and trusted her and her staff. While they were heartbroken, they knew that what happened to their sweet Corky was an accident, and did not blame Jill. Although Corky was irreplaceable, Jill was able to lessen some of the pain that came with his passing. When Jill opened her salon, she contacted an insurance company that specialized in the pet services industry. The agent explained what types of coverage she should have to protect herself, her employees and the pets she cares for. Be-

cause Jill had the specialized insurance, it covered the cost of a new pup for the family and also all the costs associated with the search for Corky. We all know that bad news travels fast, and that was especially true in Corky's case. Jill's business took a real hit because of this incident. As soon as the lost dog flyers were put up, nasty posts began to appear on social media accusing Jill's salon of negligence for “allowing” Corky to escape. Unfounded accusations and misinformation was rampant. Jill was devastated. Eventually her business recovered, but the pain of that day and what happened to Corky still haunts her. J o n a t h a n : Before we get into the Nash legacy, I’d like to talk a little about your roots in the grooming industry. Where and when did your journey in the world of pet grooming begin?
V i v i a n : I have always been a big dog lover and had different breeds, but when I rescued my Poodle, Mitzi, I was intrigued with the trim styles and had to learn how to groom her, and that was how it all began. • Lack of pro-social interaction. We become more non-social when focused on a task. This helps us focus but can lead to grumpiness, aggression and being easily frustrated. • Too much adrenaline in our systems that can speed up our activity level but reduce good judgment and fine-motor control. When sharp tools and live animals are combined with excess energy, there is increased potential for accidents and injury. All of these are indications that our crisis response system is activating at low levels and may be getting out of control. The more stress we feel, the more our minds and bodies will want to push back against the demands of our environment. This process typically begins with a strong emotional response. We may snap at a co-worker, or at a dog. We may handle a dog roughly because we want them to comply. We can get frustrated when dogs are uncooperative—especially when we are in a hurry. We may also become louder and more forceful when talking to other people or the dog. This, added to other natural stress triggers like loud noises from barking dogs and blow dryers, can cause physical responses; our
muscles tense up, leading to musculoskeletal injuries or pain. THE SCIENCE IS CLEAR Research into the way dogs read our facial muscles, our voices and our emotions is advancing our understanding of the way our two co-evolved species communicate with and affect each other. One example of this important new field of study is the work by Annika Huber, et al. in a study published in 2017 showing that dogs “feel in contagion” or engage in “emotional state matching” with humans. All mammals have “mirror neurons” which are brain cells that react to what they observe, leading experts to call these cells the neurological basis for empathy. Humans and dogs have the closest interspecies communication and connection of any two distinct species on the earth. The physiological reality of all this has been proven in repeated studies, including those of Dr. Gregory Berns of Emory University, using MRI equipment on both people and dogs. Have you noticed how when you are the busiest in your grooming day—with client deadlines, ringing phones and a large volume of dogs to complete—that is when the dogs behave the worst? The science is clear. Dogs read and react to

We need to not only eat well, get a good night’s sleep, relax when we can and take vacations, we also need to care for our emotional selves with gratitude and finding joy.
2. Relaxation also has to be mental. We not only have to have confidence in our work but also enjoy our work, if we can. Take a deep breath. Look at the good things you are doing for the dog rather than seeing grooming as just a paycheck. This is the one thing that we groomers really have that is special; we work in a positive job caring for dogs and other pets. Many people envy our ability to spend this kind of intimate time with these amazing creatures.

Working in the animal industry is extremely rewarding; however, it can come with its fair share of challenges and risks. The good news is that we can get some benefit from the “solution to pollution is dilution” which might dilute the bad bugs so there aren’t as many. But the bad news is that some will still remain. We need to be aware that if there are open wounds, ear or oral infections, or if we come into contact with the anal region, we may be at risk of contracting a bad infection. This is especially true if you have any open wounds, which are very vulnerable to an infection. When there is an ear infection or sores on the skin, this usually harbors a host of bacteria and fungi. Some are pretty common and may be fairly benign (common inhabitants of the skin). In an infected wound, they are usually present in large numbers (over-growth). One of the most common parasites of our pets are round worms, and in humans, it is not uncommon for those to migrate to the blood vessels of the eye or brain causing blindness or even mental issues in the children. In the pet field, we also deal with external parasites. Fleas and ticks are two that most of us are very familiar with. They often carry diseases that can be anywhere from mild to very fatal (like the bubonic plague). Then there are the mites, which typically just cause skin irritation like Cheyletiella (walking dandruff or rabbit fur mite). These are often missed by human dermatologists because they don’t realize that we have such high-exposure potential relative to the normal popula-

Ask pertinent questions, listen to the possibilities that may present a problem and check out the pet before you take them in for the day. Although these diseases and parasites can be very scary and gross, most of them are highly preventable with common sense, good observation and correct protective gear. COMBINING HER
TO HELP PEOPLE & PETS Déja Pearson's Story
by Melissa Viera
P
et groomer and yoga instructor Déja Pearson has a busy schedule running her grooming salon, True Vibes Unleashed, located in Shaker Heights, Ohio. But full days of grooming pets and teaching yoga does not stop Pearson from making self-care a priority. Whether a major life change is inspired over time or in one moment, there are inevitable obstacles when moving towards that change. Thinking about the possible risks involved with change and dwelling on which choice to make can hold a lot of people back from making a move at all. Instead of remaining stuck in a position that was not bringing happiness, Pearson put pen to paper and began making a list. “I was working dead-end jobs and finally made the decision to do something that made me happy,” explains Pearson. After throwing all of her ideas onto the list, she began to rank them by interest level. Pearson may have already known on some level what she discovered with the list, but before she knew it, she was applying for any job she could find that involved working with dogs. This step, taken almost a decade ago, led Pearson to a job working for a luxury pet hotel. And al-

though she did not start out in the grooming salon at the hotel, she found herself gravitating towards that side of the business. “I peeked inside every time I passed by,” says Pearson referring to the grooming area. “I made up any excuse I could to go in there, and began begging my manager to be a bather.” Eventually, Pearson’s manager acknowledged her interest, and a grooming career for Pearson began from the ground up. Pearson started to learn the basics of grooming at the pet hotel, but her dedication did not stop when she clocked out. After completing a groomer education program and working under an experienced groomer as an assistant, Pearson began working as a groomer. In April of 2020, Pearson launched her Instagram page for True Vibes Unleashed as a way for her to reach groomers interested in learning yoga. As someone who had experienced job-related pain herself before learning yoga, Pearson enjoys helping other groomers heal and strengthen their bodies through the practice. She explains that the page began gaining traction quickly. Before she knew it, Pearson was opening her business which offers both pet grooming with a holistic approach as well as yoga resources for professional groomers.

“After some permits, paperwork, and minor renovations, I was up and running by December 2020,” she shares enthusiastically. Pearson began experiencing pain shortly after the start of her grooming career years ago, which is what inspired her to try yoga after nothing else seemed to work. “Even though I loved my job and couldn't wait to go,” Pearson continues, “I had a hard time getting out of bed and I couldn't do anything when I returned home from work.” Her yoga journey began with learning basic poses, but after noticing a difference, she was eager to continue learning. “I became infatuated with yoga; starting with an app, then going to classes, then eventually going to yoga teacher training so I could teach other groomers that they don't have to accept pain as part of the job,” Pearson shares. Being able to groom without pain continues to inspire Pearson to help other groomers discover what yoga can do for them. She explains that yoga is something anyone can do and that it is about more than stretching. “Yoga is a window to see inside of yourself,” she adds. Pearson recognizes that many groomers experience pain at different points in their career and she plans to continue spreading the word about what yoga can do. “Your body is your most important asset. New groomers tend to be preoccupied with getting the perfect cut, but if you pay attention to groomers who have been doing this for more than three years, they are already experiencing back pain. Begin taking care of your body now so you can get the most out of your career. It doesn't have to be yoga, but any form of exercise that helps you feel rejuvenated, refreshed, stronger, and ready to go the next day is essential for career longevity,” Pearson concludes. &

Common Sense/Intuition When I first went mobile, I recall
an incident where a customer’s husband would always make me uncomfortable. When she was present, he would leer at me across the table or from across the yard while I was grooming the dogs. He ran back to the driver’s side door now banging on the window to let him in. I threw Proud Mary in reverse and punched it! By the time I smashed the mailbox, he had let go. How could the above situation been avoided? Had I followed my intuition or “first mind,” I would have left the moment I found out that his wife was not present. But I was new to mobile, I had to make budget and I did not want to miss the money for two large-sized dogs. The thing that kept me safe was that my doors were locked. Had I neglected to do that one simple thing, I cannot imagine what could have happened. All money is not good money. If you feel uncomfortable in any situation, leave. I would like to caution about meeting someone that you do not know and have never groomed their pet before in a different location other than their home. If they are outside of your service area then the answer should be, “No, I am sorry I do not service that area.” Things happen in busy truck stops and parking lots all the time, either because people are not comprehending what they are seeing or they do not care. Do not place yourself in a compromising position for a few dollars. In closing, I do not want you to be so paranoid that you are afraid to do your job. I do want, however, to give you some things to think about that will keep you safe. When I started in the business 19 Bio-Groom’s 5 gallon pails are priced at the same cost as 4 individual gallons. PET FIRST AID KITS for Pet Professionals by Mary Oquendo s we are pet professionals, pet first aid kits are not optional. You will use it, even if it’s on yourself. Pre-packaged kits are a good starting point, but they may not contain what you really need. And while it did (75 of them to be precise), it was sorely lacking in other items. My own pet first aid kit has evolved over the years and currently contains the following in alphabetical order:

In addition, the cards can flick out bee stingers. Place the card at the base of the stinger where it meets the skin and lift up and out.
9.
Eyewash serves double duty. It can be used to flush out both eyes and wounds.
10. Gauze comes in three varieties: gauze roll, gauze pads and nonstick gauze pads. The gauze roll is wider and is good for larger wounds. The nonstick gauze is more expensive but I will use it as the first gauze pad on the wound
and then place the cheaper gauze on top on it. The nonstick gauze will not remove the scab when it is time to replace the bandaging. 11. Honey packets for hypoglycemic pets. Stress, seizures or an owner giving a pet too much insulin can result in low blood sugar. This is a serious condition that may result in the death of the pet. Signs include listlessness, staggering, tremors, muscle weakness and seizures. Do not give the pet honey unless directed by a veterinarian as the symptoms for hypoglycemia and ketone acidious (KA) can be similar. Giving honey to pet in KA can be fatal. 12. Hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting in a dog. As this is used for poisoning, consult a veterinarian first. Dosage will vary. If the substance is caustic, do not induce vomiting as it will burn the throat on its way out. You cannot use hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting in cats as they cannot metabolize it. 13. Ice will constrict blood flow and slow bleeding. I do not keep ice in my pet first aid kit. Your client’s freezer or shop refrigerator would be your best bet. 14. Liquid bandage is an asset if you know how to use it properly. Used incorrectly, it can damage surrounding tissue, as well as trap bacteria in the wound. Your veterinarian can instruct you on proper usage. In many states, using liquid bandage without veterinarian guidance is considered practicing veterinary medicine. 15. Muzzles are a must. If you need to use your pet first aid kit, the pet is likely in pain, and any pet that is in pain is a bite risk.

16. Plastic baggies to collect a vomit or fecal sample. This may be necessary if the pet has been poisoned and you are unsure of what was ingested. When not in use, they can store smaller items for easy accessibility. 17. Rubber gloves to protect you from any zoonotic diseases and also to collect vomit or fecal samples. 18. SAM splints. These are good for any injury you want to keep immobile. They are also moldable and you can cut them to size. 19. Sanitary napkins will absorb blood. 20. Squirt bottle to deliver hydrogen peroxide down the throat of a dog. 21. Styptic powder for use on nails only since it can sting when it touches a wound. In addition, styptic powder is not sterile and you may introduce bacteria into the wound.
46

22. Tea bags containing tannic acid. This is effective in stopping bleeding. While sugar is effective, I do not recommend it because the pet may be pre/or diabetic. 23. Vet wrap is wonderful. It keeps the wound secure and dry. Vet wrap is also expensive. The human counterpart, which is the exact same thing, is a fraction of the cost. Vet wrap needs to be removed on a daily basis as it self-tightens and cuts off blood supply. 24. Wound cleanser. You have several options. The first is sterile saline solution, also known as eyewash. The second is a Chlorohexidine-based cleanser which is easy to find. My personal choice is Vetericyn products. Do not use hydrogen peroxide as it degrades surrounding tissue and cats cannot metabolize it. Do

not use alcohol as it stings. Do not use sterile, tap or bottled water and it disrupts the salt balance of the cells and slows healing. Many of these items have expiration dates and should be checked periodically. If you still want to go with a pre-packaged pet first aid kit, my recommendation is to go to www.Curicyn.com and order one of theirs. PawsEd20 will get you 20% off. Treating injuries quickly results in faster healing with less pain. It may also reduce veterinary costs, a win-win for everyone involved. &

Kitty’s Corner

Grooming very obese cats has a different set of concerns than grooming healthy-weight or underweight felines. These are the kitties that look like they have a head and feet stuck on a ball.
A
nd they tend to be over 28 pounds on a body that should carry 10 to 12 pounds. Owners of the extremely overweight kitties tend to either be sensitive about their cat’s weight or handle the disproportional size as a joke. I usually find that these felines are overfed low-quality food. They are more likely to be fed the cat food that was on sale. Inconsistency with the brand and choosing a lower-quality food both lead to stomach issues. It is not uncommon for these cats to have chronic loose stools which contribute to coat problems. Cats on a lower-quality diet

also tend to be greasier than cats on a higher-quality diet. Pelting is common for these overweight cats due to the lack of activity and condition of the skin. When discussing diet and household changes with the owner of an obese cat, it is important you refer these clients to their veterinarian. The last thing we want for these kitties is a sudden and drastic reduction in available food or being over exercised through playtime. If the owners are serious about addressing the weight of their cat, they need a written plan by their veterinarian that assures the cat is getting the calories and nutrients they need to lose weight at a safe rate.
GroomertoGroomer.com
They will also need support. Any cat that has their routine disrupted has the potential for behavioral changes. Changing the type or amount of food a feline is given tends to quickly trigger complaints and stubbornness. While some cats will stand at their food bowl and scream until the owners give in, others will cause destruction. Helping the cat lose weight will not be a quick or easy task. As the cat’s groomer, you can be the owner’s support during the process. While many owners want their cat groomed before they go to the veterinarian to prevent further embarrassment, it is very important the cat sees the vet-

When discussing diet and household changes with the owner of an obese cat, it is important you refer these clients to their veterinarian. erinarian before your grooming session. The greater body weight will place more pressure and demand on the heart and lungs, making this type of feline more prone to fatal, undiagnosed health conditions. It is important the cat is healthy enough to survive the grooming process. A great tip is to ask the owner to have the veterinarian check for ingrown nails at this appointment. This can prevent an additional referral for medical care from the groomer. These very large cats tend to have pelting and fecal matter in their coats. Pelt removals are much easier on these types of cats because their skin is held tight due to their weight. If the cat is

aggressive, it is much easier to stay out of the bite zone due to the cat’s limited mobility. The ease of working with this type of cat stops there. Obese cats tend to have limited mobility which makes accessing the area between their legs and body more difficult. These kitties also have had limited physical activity for an extended period making a pelt removal exhausting for the feline. Limited mobility combined with limited physical activity increases the likelihood that a pelt removal with water bath may need to be done in multiple sessions. Positioning these cats for grooming can be challenging, especially for those groomers who groom in their lap. Many

of these cats lie on their side to keep as much additional pressure off their internal organs as possible. Doing as much of the grooming as achievable in the cat’s natural, preferred position on a flat surface is the best strategy. Lying these cats on their back has the potential to be dangerous. The extra weight quickly presses on their lungs causing breathing issues. It is important to watch for panting and irregular breathing with these kitties. Any time the breathing rate cannot be immediately returned to normal, it is time to stop the groom. My grooming strategy for these kitties is to perform a pelt removal with full water bath. This may take more than

one visit. After that, I then schedule an appointment at four weeks. Owners may be a bit surprised at a four-week appointment. To calm the family, I tell the owners I am going to schedule the appointment as a bath, but if kitty does not need a bath, I will do a nail trim and a brush-out for free. Unfortunately, this type of cat always needs a full water bath at four weeks. Most of these felines have chronic diarrhea, and the others have skin issues due to poor nutrition. At that second appointment, I show the owner why the kitty needs a full bath and nail trim. Then I ask the owner about changes they have observed after their first groom. If the feline was “stinky” at check-in, I suggest we try three weeks for the next bath. Keeping the very obese cats on a three-to-five-week water bath, sani and nail trim schedule seems to work best to keep the fecal matter from building up in the coat.
GroomertoGroomer.com
I have found giving these families a “second Tuesday” or “last Thursday” of the month regular appointment helps them stick to the schedule. And while these cats are bigger and heavier which causes more strain on my body, I do have a special package that gets these families a lower price if they commit to a regular three-to-five-week schedule. Grooming the very obese kitties can be extremely challenging. Their size not only adds additional stress on the groomer’s body, but also internal pressure on the feline’s lungs and heart. It is important to have a required veterinarian check before grooming this type of cat. And during the groom, always make sure obese cats are comfortable and breathing correctly. Caution needs to be taken when making any suggestions about the feline’s diet or changes in routine. &
