If not for DOGS where would we all be? Dogs provide us, the grooming professionals, with the opportunity to showcase our creativity. In addition, there is our chance to earn a living doing something that we truly enjoy and find rewarding, while providing a health benefit for the dogs and their owners as well.
M
ost non–dog owners (and even some dog owners) are not aware of the many varied services and benefits these heroes deliver: • First and foremost, they bring pleasure, understanding and unequivocal love, and ask nothing in return. • They provide a major health benefit by making us exercise when walking them, playing tug–of–war with their toys, or just throwing a ball inside the house. • They surely bring joy to all the

children lucky enough to have them. They give them not only love and attention, but protect them as well by sensing danger. • They help alleviate stress. When you play with them you forget the problems in your life. They even help lower blood pressure by relieving the built–up stress. • Getting out in the fresh air and meeting other dog owners affords the chance to make new friends and even the possibility for business relationships.

They work wonders for our wounded heroes, returning with mental illnesses and physical injuries. These dogs’ lives are risked and sometimes sacrificed in combat. • They are perfect aides for all children and adults with disabilities. Fortunately with this realization, dogs are now allowed in schools, offices, on buses, planes and trains, restaurants and housing developments where they used to be barred. • They help detect seizures and diabetic shock so that medical attention can be provided, avoiding disastrous results. • For the hearing impaired, they hear the doorbell, ringing of the phone, and even alert them to motor vehicle horns.
• They assist the visually impaired by walking side–by–side with them, avoiding falls, and keeping them safe from other possible accidents. • They work wonders for our wounded heroes, returning with mental illnesses and physical injuries. These dogs’ lives are risked and sometimes sacrificed in combat. • Dogs instinctively protect us from criminal harm as well. Due to their amazing sense of smell and hearing ability, they are used by law enforcement agencies to sniff out drugs and detect explosives.
The main benefit we grooming professionals provide for these heroes is helping to keep them healthy through grooming. We not only wash the allergens out of their coats, but we discover and uncover cysts, dental problems, ear, eye and skin conditions as well as geriatric onset problems. I’ve always been proud to be a major part of helping keep them healthy through grooming education. What would we all do without dogs in our lives? Truthfully, I really don’t want to know! ✂

GROOMING MATTERS by Daryl Conner
I
t’s that wonderful time of year again. The days are getting longer, the hard, cold winter is behind us. It’s the time of year where generations of people have dug deep into the ritual of spring cleaning. Wiping the dust, scrubbing the grime, polishing the… EVERYTHING… to banish winter and embrace the bright days ahead. Here are some suggestions on how you can make your work space, be it a mobile unit, a portion of some other pet–based business, a home–based place, or a regulation storefront, really shine. There are two ways to tackle a deep clean. One is to bite off a little bit of the project each day until it is completed, the other is to dedicate a day (or two!) to working solely on cleaning and get the whole thing done in one fell swoop. I have tried both, but prefer the latter. There is something deeply soul satisfying to dedicating a chunk of time to
10
a project like this and seeing it through to completion. Here are some suggestions on how to embark on what I call a “big clean.” The first step is to do some serious decluttering. The stack of magazines in your waiting area? Pull out everything except the current month and recycle them. Little decorative bits here and there? Give them a hard look and decide if you can live without them. I love the rule that you should not keep any object that is not useful, beautiful, or does not bring you joy. Have you ever heard of Flylady? Marla Cilley is her real name, and she has a fabulous web site designed to help people organize and clean their homes. You can get a lot of useful (and free!) information about great decluttering ideas on her site. (www.flylady.net) Look at your grooming area. I can tell you with all honesty that right now, in the cabinet where I

keep things like coat sprays, clipper oil, various hair treatments and such, that I have two large baskets overflowing with small bottles. Some are samples sent when I order products, some are things I bought to try but rarely or never use. My spring clean will include doing some very harsh weeding out of those baskets. I can never find what it is that I am looking for, because there are so many items I don’t use stashed there. Do you have a similar problem? It’s time to tackle where you store supplies. How about your tools? Do you have brushes you never use, combs missing teeth, damaged dematters? They need to go. Remember that damaged tools can injure pets, it will help make the decision to deep–six a once favorite tool easier. Decluttering will save you time when you groom because you will know where everything is. And having less stuff makes for a more serene work space.
Once you have removed extraneous stuff from your space, it is time to do some deep cleaning. I like to start at the top and work down. Use this check list to help you tackle the job: • Vacuum, sweep or dust the ceiling, any molding you might have between ceiling and walls, light fixtures, ceiling fans and vent fans. Clean light fixtures. • The walls in grooming areas get frighteningly dirty because we blow dirt, dander, coat products and more off pets and it lands somewhere, often on the walls. Vacuum or sweep from the top down, then wash them to remove residue. • If you have photographs, certificates of achievement, awards or other things hanging on your walls, take them down. Pet hair and
dust gather behind them. Give them a good cleaning before rehanging. • While you are working in high spaces, clean any smoke detectors and change the batteries. • Windows should be washed inside and out. This one step will brighten up your space to an amazing degree. Screens should be taken out of the windows and washed with a sponge, soap, and water. Rinse well, air dry, and rehang. If you have blinds, shades, or other window treatments, clean them now, too. • Wash the trim around your windows. Oftentimes, window sills become mysteriously dirty. Perhaps from little paws bracing on them while pets look out for their owners? If mere scrubbing won’t fix them, make a note to do some touch up painting another day.

While you are working on that door, pretend you are a customer approaching your entrance. Does it look neat, tidy, and welcoming? Do you still have a Christmas wreath up in March? Remember that your entrance provides the first impression of your business. • Wipe down trim around doors, paying special attention to the area where door knobs are. They get grimy. Wash doors, inside and out, especially your entrance door, which sees hard use every day. • While you are working on that door, pretend you are a customer approaching your entrance. Does it look neat, tidy, and welcoming? Do you still have a Christmas wreath up in March? Remember that your entrance provides the first
impression of your business. • If you have plants in your workspace, cast a hard eye on them. Are they healthy and beautiful, or half dead and sad? If it’s the second option, consider replacing them. • Get down and dirty and scrub baseboards. It’s not a fun job, but it sure feels good to get them clean. • Move heavy furniture and equipment away from where they normally sit and clean the walls and floor under them. I recently had to
pull my tub out to have a plumbing problem repaired, and was excited to have a chance to remove built up hair and yuck that was behind there. • Clean the bases of grooming tables, inside and out of clipper vacuum systems, and all other large grooming equipment. • Pull cage banks away from walls & clean on top, behind & under them. • If you have a washing machine and dryer as part of your work space, clean both. Remove/ replace the filter, and clean the canister as well. • If you use box fans or cage dryers, remove the inevitable dog hair that gets stuck in these, and clean well. • Many groomers use dehumidifiers. s this a typical day for you? Get up early, grab some coffee and go to work. You work, work, work, and have a quick donut or energy bar for lunch. Then work, work, work some more, go home, woof down some dinner, and collapse on the couch—then do it all over again tomorrow. Unfortunately, this really is a normal routine for many groomers. All too often groomers are consumed by their work. They obsess about how many pets they have to groom and how quickly they can get them done. They take very few breaks and have no downtime. How long can someone continue like that before they burn out? You're a human being, not a machine. Even machines can't operate continuously without

care and maintenance. Grooming is a very physically demanding job. Back, shoulder, knee, foot, and hand issues—along with a multitude of other work related problems are very common. If you want to continue to groom for the next 10, 20, or more years, you need to plan ahead and take care of yourself.
YOUR WOR KPL AC E Your workspace should be designed to make your job easier starting from the floor up. Your equipment needs to help you get the job done efficiently and with less strain on you. • Anti–fatigue mats are a must at your grooming tables and in the bathing and drying areas. • Make sure to wear supportive

well–fitting shoes. • Go to trade shows and 'try on' scissors. Have them fitted to your hand. Properly fitted shears reduce fatigue and make scissoring a breeze. • Bathing systems help deep– clean pets quickly and with less 'elbow–grease' on your part. • Clipper vacuum systems remove the hair as it is clipped. They substantially reduce the grooming time, and in many cases eliminate a lot of scissoring. • High velocity dryers can drastically decrease the time it takes to dry a pet, and they can greatly reduce the amount of brushing you have to do. • Adjustable tables and bathtubs not only make grooming easier on your back, it is safer for the pets.

PROTECT YOURSELF • Support and restraint systems help hold a pet safely and make it easier for you to groom them.
PROTECT YOURSELF Groomers often work in a noisy environment—dogs barking, HV dryers, the noise of vacuums, clippers, nail grinders, and other equipment can all take a toll on your hearing. Wearing hearing protection is a must for everyone. When you are drying a pet, dander and pet hair are released. Protect yourself by wearing a mask and also hearing and
hair are released. Protect yourself by wearing a mask and also hearing and eye protection. eye protection. You may not have given it much thought, but when you grind a pet's toenails you also need to wear protection. The grinding produces a combination of toenail dust and particles from the sanding drum. The dust and particles can fly into your eyes and you can also breathe them in. Wearing protective glasses and a mask when you dremel nails is a must. Some groomers use their stand dryers to blow air on the pet's foot when grinding nails thinking that they are blowing the dust away. In fact
they are dispersing it into the air to be breathed in by everyone—including the pets. You can get an attachment for your nail grinder that connects to a clipper vacuum system. That will remove the dust as it is produced, thus saving you and the pet from breathing it in or getting it in your eyes.

RETIREMENT • Proper nutrition is what fuels your body. You can't work at peak efficiency when you try to exist on fast food, donuts, and coffee or soda. • Exercise. Although you work hard every day, it's not the same as structured exercise. Take a yoga, Pilates, or an aerobics class. You can have fun while you strengthen your muscles. • Get adequate rest. It's more important than you may think. You can't perform well if you don't get enough sleep.
when you invest for the long term. • Learn how to lift pets correctly to reduce the likelihood of injuring yourself. Using ramps or steps to get larger dogs into the tub or on the table can save wear and tear (or permanent damage) to your body. • It is imperative that you have medical and disability insurance. You will have the peace of mind knowing that you have protection for everything from a minor accident to a major illness. Without coverage, a medical catastrophe could end your career or bankrupt you.
FIN A NC I A L HE A LTH Do you know someone who is old enough to retire but they are still working because they don't have any money in savings? Don't let that happen to you. Groomers are some of the hardest working people on the planet. You give lots of TLC to your clients and to their pets, don't you think it's time that you got some too? When was the last time you went to a movie, got your nails done, or had a massage? Do you feel guilty if you take a day off to do something that you want to do? Free time is one of the most precious (and often most elusive) things a groomer would like to have. Your entire life should not revolve around your grooming career. You need to have other interests, too. Read, meditate, or get a hobby. Try your hand at painting. Join a bowling league. Take cooking, gardening, or scuba diving lessons. Make yourself a priority with a little groomer TLC. You need it and you deserve it! ✂

any new products have come out on the market and many treatments, masks, techniques and methods have been touted as the new “spa”. Proper breed trims are obsessed over; what scissors we are using, what combs, brushes, widgets and the sprays; lotions and bows that are applied as the finishing touches to our masterpieces. There are so many details that go into finishing the perfect groom that oftentimes, good, basic skin care is overlooked. Maintaining the health of the skin by using correct cleansing methods, increasing circulation, relaxing the nerves, and stimulating the skin glands is necessary to create the balance that the skin needs to metabolize properly. Basic skin care can be divided into a few different sections. Let’s explore each. Some are unaware that the skin care routine for ourselves is nearly the same as when we apply it to our clients’ pets; examination, detoxification, cleansing, conditioning and finish.
Groomer to Groomer • Vol 36 Ed 3 • March 2017
1) EXAMINATION The first step is always to examine the individual pet to see if there is anything unusual happening on the surface of the skin. This exam will determine what types of products are used and if a mask is necessary. Most of the time, the exam simply lets us know that the skin is doing fine and we can move on to the cleansing stage. But occasionally we find things like crusts (scabs), scale (dandruff) or other nonspecific rashes or red spots. Anything that is found to be questionable should always be seen by

a veterinarian for proper diagnosis.
2) DETOXIFICATION A mask is a general term for a concoction that works topically on the skin to soften crusty skin, and draw out toxins. The rule of thumb when choosing a base for a mask is if there are crusts (scabs) or not. When crusts are present, a mask with a softening agent, such as collagen, an oil additive or even a small portion of conditioner, is needed because we cannot address the issue with the skin until we can reach it with topical cleansers. If the skin does not have crusts, then we can choose a mask with a pulling agent like clay to pull or remove the toxins and pollutants, bacteria or fungus that may be plaguing the skin. A good tip to remember is that the lighter color the clay is, the softer it will pull. The darker the clay the harder the drawing action. If we find that a mask or detoxifying step is needed, then we need to identify what kind of mask should be applied. The base of the mask can be collagen to soften or clay to pull toxins. Both types can be used together in differing amounts depending on the needs of the skin. Oils that are beneficial to the masking process are ginkgo oil to reduce inflammation, ginseng to stimulate vascular circulation, avocado oil to nourish and heal, and Emu oil for nourishing depleted skin among many of the other benefits it gives. A liquid mineral supplement can also be used in your mask to boost the immune system and replace critical minerals that the skin is lacking. There are also commercially prepared masks on the market today and it may be a matter of trying them out until you find the one that does the best job for your circumstances.
3) CLEANSERS There is an enormous amount of choices when it comes to cleansers for pets. Each pet should be treated as an individual as each skin might have different needs. When there are no issues present, a gentle cleanser that does not attack the lipid layer is always a good choice. When issues are found, the previous diagnosis from the vet comes in handy. When you know what the problem is (seborrhea, infection, fungus or parasites) you can easily choose a cleanser with certain properties to address these particular issues.
Double coated dogs such as Huskies, Chows, Golden Retrievers and even cats need minerals and protein to maintain the large amount of coat that is much of their protection from the environment.
4) CONDITIONERS One of the most important aspects of the skin care process is replacing the oils that were washed away by bathing. The pets we care for come in a spectrum of mineral and oil needs. The shorter the coat (or even hairless) need the most oil to maintain a proper barrier against the hazards of the environment and to help maintain body temperature. Double coated dogs such as Huskies, Chows, Golden Retrievers and even cats need minerals and protein to maintain the large amount of coat that is much of their protection from the environment. Long coated dogs require a light coating of oil on the outside of their hair to keep the hair hydrated to the ends and combat static. It is important to recognize that the final conditioning phase is the application of the protective coating that will act as sebum to fortify the skin’s ability to do its job. The natural flora and fauna that live on the surface of the skin require this sebumlike material to maintain balance and keep the skin supple and healthy.

My rule of thumb is to always choose products that have ingredients that contribute something to the health of the skin instead of “empty” ingredients that don’t give any type of nourishment at all.
4) FINISHING PRODUCTS There are so many finishing products available today, it is fairly easy to find one that works for each specific need. It is a logical assumption that when the skin is healthy there would be no need for more than just one finish spray to achieve the texture and feel of the coat that the groomer is looking for. It is when the needs of the skin are ignored and the coat is sparse, frazzled and unhappy that several products or combination of products are needed to create a better texture. Some finishing sprays are water based and are better used while the pet is wet and being fluffed or dried, while some are silicone based and are better when used on dry to damp hair and are used as detanglers, static guards and scissoring sprays. My rule of thumb is to always

choose products that have ingredients that contribute something to the health of the skin instead of “empty” ingredients that don’t give any type of nourishment at all. This would be the difference between an anti-static spray that is silicone based but still has minerals and vitamins as opposed to one that only contains silicone and plastic. Here are a few little things you can do to incorporate new techniques of skin care to improve your healthy skin game: • Many of us these days are savvy and are in the know about the different types of topical treatments that are available today. For those of us not yet using a good conditioner, this might be the time to start testing some of them out and seeing which ones provide better nourishment. • Clays and masks might also provide a more complete skin care experience. • Think about incorporating a treatment menu so that your clients know all the extra services you offer. Following this basic skin care routine for every pet and improving your ability to choose products that fit the needs of the individual pet will improve the quality of skin care that you and your shop can provide. The proof will be evident in the beautiful coats of your pet friends and the satisfaction of your clientele. ✂ Michelle Knowles is the owner of All Things Paw and Minikin Pet Boarding. ASK THE GROOMING TUTOR by Michell Evans
SHOW
Hi Michell. I have been trying to improve my grooming by going to dog shows. I have been surprised that the grooming is not as good as I expected. Sometimes I wonder why the judge picked the one with a bad haircut. I have also run into many rude and unhelpful people. Some of them seem downright secretive. I have always admired pet groomers who have the ability to do show grooming, but frankly I find the grooming to be much more beautiful at dog grooming competitions. I really want to be able to groom show dogs but I don’t know how to get started.

i Holly. There are several things that you need to understand about dog showing. First, politics aside, each dog is being compared to the written breed standard—not to the other dogs in the ring. Of course, there are some comparisons being made by the judge, but the point of those comparisons is to see which specimen fits the breed standard the best.
28
Second, determining conformation (how well the dog conforms to the written breed standard) does not require a perfectly groomed coat. The judge only needs to see a generally clean, maintained coat trimmed to the basic outline and current style to determine if the coat is the correct color, texture, type and length according to the standard. The dog as a whole is being judged, not the haircut. The judge

is primarily looking at movement, structure and overall conformation. Third, there are many things to consider when you are ringside judging, which should be done discretely. Many amateur exhibitors are in those rings. Today might be their first time presenting a dog. A bitch who is looking a little moth–eaten may have had a litter of puppies recently and lost much

You may be looking at a puppy who has not developed a coat yet or has a poor texture as a youth but will later develop a beautiful coat. The judge may choose a dog with a less than beautiful coat and haircut based on the dog underneath. Meanwhile, in a grooming contest the skill of the groomer and the beauty of the dog and its coat are being judged. If you purchase a show catalogue at a dog show you can follow along and gain some insight about what you are observing in the ring. For example, if you see what looks like an amateur grooming job you may discover that the exhibitor is actually

entered in an amateur class or realize that the one with the beautiful floor length coat and rich color is a 6 year old mature male who has been growing testosterone fueled coat for over ½ a decade. Now it might make more sense. Fourth, trimming of a dog may be different in the show ring than it is in a grooming contest because in a dog show the dog is largely judged while moving, and in a grooming contest the dog is judged standing still. When grooming a dog for movement, you have to be aware of flopping coat and coat that may disguise a flaw in the gate or enhance a correct gate or both. The best competitors can achieve both a perfect standing–still groom and a groom that will work and flow in movement as well.

short haired breeds, take the opportunity! As for getting a helpful conversation going at a dog show, go back to your catalogue and look at the Owner Handler classes and Bred by Exhibitor class. Do not try to spark up a conversation while they are all gathering to exhibit. Rather wait until the breed has finished and then approach one of the exhibitors from those two classes. These are the people who will most likely take time with you to promote their line, kennel and the breed as a whole. The point of a dog show is similar to that of a livestock show. They are showing off their breed stock in order to fund and perpetuate the line. Many of the exhibitors are paid professionals and they are quickly off to their next client with no time for questions, so don’t feel snubbed. Remember too that even the most gracious losers may be simply holding their emotions inside until they get to a more private place. Your questions may be better asked to a winner from the classes. as rude, it probably has nothing to do with you and everything to do with difficult professional and social situations that accompany competition of any kind. When you do approach someone remember that flattery is a good place to start! One way you can get experience is to make yourself available to volunteer. This goes for learning opportunities in both types of competitions. You could meet them at shows and carry stuff for them. You can go to their kennel and wash dogs for them. They might have you walk/potty dogs for them. Don’t be disappointed if they don’t let you do any grooming for a while, or never. You will still learn a lot! Don’t underestimate the grooming that goes into short haired breeds. If the only person who you can find to mentor you is a breeder/exhibitor of short haired breeds, take the opportunity! There is much to be learned from show grooming and exhibiting, as well as grooming contests. Your grooming will only improve from the experience and knowledge. I hope that this helps you get your foot in the door. ✂ I am a multi-Best-In-Show and BestAll-Around groomer. I am the recipient of many Barkleigh Honors Awards. here is a new grooming contest debuting this year, and it’s going to be a big one. The World Dog Grooming Championship will crown one groomer $10,000, the cover of Groomer to Groomer Magazine, a huge trophy (as seen on the cover), and other prizes. However, the biggest prize might be having the distinction of being the very first person to be crowned a world champion in an individual grooming contest. There will also be a Rescue Round-up and creative grooming competition. Groomers from over 20 countries will be competing in this invitational. Each class will have a winner from the USA group and the one from the international group. The international and USA winners will then be judged against each other to determine the best in each class. Those four Best in Class winners will be part of the BIS line-up that will take place in the World Dog Expo Championship Arena on Sunday. The American Kennel Club and Nature’s Specialties were the first to sign on as sponsors. More sponsors are being added. Barkleigh Productions, in association with Joey Villani and Dave Walker, is producing the first ever, internationally focused dog expo. World Dog Expo is set to kick off June 9th of 2017 at the Meadowlands Expo Center, just outside NYC. With the involvement of Villani and Barkleigh, the show will be heavily influenced by the grooming industry. “We see negative grooming stories in the news, but we don’t see near enough stories about the positive things groomers do day in and day out,” states Barkleigh president, Todd Shelly, “This show will put groomers front and center in a very positive way.” There will be a fully functioning grooming shop set up inside the
main entrance. Show attendees will be encouraged to ask questions and observe the entire grooming process from check-in to check-out. There will be stations set up showing each stage of the process. In addition to the grooming contests on center stage, groomers will be prominently featured as seminar speakers in World Dog Academy. “Groomers have a wealth of knowledge and we are going to spotlight that at this show.” Explains Villani. Groomers will also be featured with vets and trainers in the “Ask the Experts” booth. Because World Dog Expo is a show for the general public, there will be much more to the show in addition to the grooming. This premiere event will capture the attention of dog enthusi-
asts from around the world. Plus, as the first event of its kind, and with the growing international fascination with dogs, it is expected that this event will generate a buzz throughout the New York media market. The three–day spectacular event will celebrate dogs everywhere in a large–scale, cutting edge multimedia format. With multiple stages, both inside and outside the impressive facility, attendees will enjoy world championship caliber events including dock diving and disc dog. They can also see amazing dogs compete in fly ball and agility, just to name a few. World Dog Expo will also feature an exciting breed showcase area, highlighting over one hundred breeds known from all over the world. A world championship groom-
ing competition will spotlight the art of pet grooming as never seen before. And the show will work to promote dog rescue, fostering and adoption. Aside from the spectator events, World Dog Expo will include educational seminars on proper care and nutrition, pet first aid, as well as other classes for pet owners. It will also feature industry specific classes for professionals in the pet care industry. One of the main attractions of World Dog Expo will be the notable trade show event, featuring a huge array of dog–centered products across hundreds of booths. The trade show will be positioned throughout the two main halls, plus an outdoor events area. Attendees will be able to find the newest and best products for their canine companions. ✂

pring is fast approaching and it is time to strip off those heavy winter coats, and maybe slip into something a bit more comfortable and stylish, like a nice bright spring sweater. Well, today we have just the thing for Kimchi, the white Pomeranian, who not only enjoys her lighter stylish sweater, but loves showing it off much to the delight of her family. To create this look we are going to use a new semi–permanent hair color that is made to fade

out in about eight to ten washes, eliminating the need for clipping the coat short to rid it of color. Before beginning this clipping and coloring adventure, Kimchi is bathed, blown out and dried so we can begin her sweater transfurmation by first cutting in the sweater outlines and fringes. Fig. 1) Clip the neck area behind head with a 5 or 7 blade and continue this in a circle around the entire neck. Don't go too far down, as the area just below will need to remain long to
become the collar of the sweater. Fig. 2 & 3) Next, decide just how large you want the collar to be and, using your shears, cut in the collar line all the way around the neck area, using your clipped neck area as a guideline. Fig. 4) With this done, you are going to move on to setting the cuffs on the front legs. Also using your shears, make a cut below the elbow all the way around the leg and another just above. This will create the illusion of a fluffy trim at the cuff of your sweater. Actual placement of this cuff is strictly up to you and where you think it would look best on the dog you are putting it on. I cleaned up the legs a bit after this so I could see the definition between the sweater trim and the leg of the dog. Fig. 5) The next step I took was to place the bottom trim of the

sweater by using the natural lines of the dog. I made a cut with my shears, lined up from the placement of the front cuff trim, going in a curving line up the front of the top of the rear leg, over the hip and across the back. Fig. 6) My next cut would be from the tuck-up, up and curving slightly to the center of the back where it would meet up with the other side. You now have two lines cut in and this is your outline for the trim at the bottom of the sweater. Now repeat the lines on the other side of the dog and bring it all together, meeting in the middle on the back of your dog. Fig. 7) Now is the time to

remove the excess coat in between the fluffy trim of your sweater. By cutting this short you will be able to easily dye in a pattern of your choice. Using my clippers and a 5f blade I cut the entire coat off other than my sweater trim. This included trimming the legs shorter. Fig. 8) Using a tint brush, I applied the color medium by first placing the brush at the base of the hair next to the skin and brushing it outward to the tip of the hair. Do this from the top and bottom to outline, and then go back and fill it in by brushing sideways. Fig. 9) Once the trim is all complete, the sweater is ready for a fill–in. For this one I chose to do a simple spring plaid with complimentary colors that would blend nicely when overlapped. With firm bristle paintbrushes, first practice on paper towels to see what it will look like. Fig. 10) Start with one color and paint on stripes in one direction, completely on the inside of the sweater. Then with a second paintbrush, paint on the lines so they cross over each other. You can go back and add a little of the first color at

some of the cross points to blend it and give it the over under weave look. Fig. 11) Once all the color was applied, I set a timer for 30 minutes to give the color plenty of time to stain the coat before washing. This particular product seems to rinse very clean unlike many other true semi–permanent color products. Because this is a client’s dog, make sure to rinse, shampoo twice and rinse again so no color will come off the dog, which could cause a possible customer complaint. Once dried, finish the groom as you normally would and leave the trim of the sweater fluffy. You will notice as you go back over the body with your clippers that the color really pops as you tighten the trim. MUCH MORE THAN A
GROOMER NADIA BONGELLI’S STORY by Melissa Viera

rooming professionally wasn’t always what the now 28–year–old, Nadia Bongelli had in mind. But since her grooming career began nearly seven years ago, she has become completely immersed in grooming, competing, and dog shows. Bongelli is the sole proprietor of The Purple Dog Groomer, out of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. “Before I was grooming, I was attending York University in Toronto,” says Bongelli. Although she enjoyed her studies, Bongelli could not clearly see a future goal for herself that would make all of her hard work feel purposeful, leading to feeling unhappy as a student. “I was enjoying my schoolwork,

but I couldn’t see a light at the end of the tunnel. I couldn’t see a purpose in my academics beyond a diploma,” she explains. Bongelli’s studies included Classical and East Asian studies with a focus on Japanese Language. Along with being a student, she was also working at a pet food store and helping a groomer on weekends. “I was in university and I was unhappy,” says Bongelli. “I was helping a groomer on weekends bathing dogs, as I had just gotten my first dog and I had met her through my puppy’s regular grooming appointments.” Bongelli enjoyed the opportunity to interact with the dogs so much that she made the decision to change directions dramatically in her life.

“I felt so happy in her salon, bathing her dogs, and spending time with her and the pets there. It was scary for me to make the change but I soon dropped out of university and began attending grooming school.” Learning to groom would prove to be a challenge for Bongelli at first. Being a left–handed groomer had challenges all on its own, added to the common challenges faced when learning any new skill well. She experienced a lot of frustration early on; mentioning how the skills and techniques that come naturally to her now were so time–consuming in the beginning. “Oh my goodness, frustration; so much frustration,” Bongelli says when talking about what she remembers from

the learning period. “I always tell new groomers to stick it out because it definitely gets a lot easier.” To Bongelli’s surprise, many of the tools she was learning to use were not available for left–handed groomers at the time. “Being a lefty is a little frustrating,” she says. “Some specialized tools aren’t made for left–handed people.” Even finding left–handed scissors was not always easy, not to mention tools like stripping knives. In the last few years Bongelli has been pleased to notice that more manufactures are providing left–handed tools compared to what she remembers being out there when she first started. Bongelli soon found that there were other left–handed groomers facing similar challenges as herself. “I’ve been asked a few dozen times

about what lefty–friendly tools I use and am always more than happy to share my experience.” In order to connect with other groomers and share tools, tips, and ideas, Bongelli started a community Facebook page, “Lefty Groomers.” Helping other groomers is something that Bongelli is motivated by. “It makes me really happy to see people improving and exploring their potential.” Along with grooming professionally, Bongelli enjoys competing in grooming competitions. She enjoys sharing her skills and knowledge with others who can benefit. “I feel that competing and educating are my passions and would jump at the opportunity to help others, says Bongelli. When teaching other groomers, Bongelli has an abundance of tips to inspire them. One piece of advice

that groomers just starting out, or any groomer looking to improve their skills can learn from Bongelli, is her suggestion to save photos of their work so they can look back at them after a few months and see how they are progressing. “In the beginning it is hard and that can be discouraging, and it can be difficult to notice your improvement unless you really take the opportunity to observe yourself over larger periods of time,” she explains. “It sounds silly, but I also tell them to write down something new they learned every single day after work. This was something I had to do in grooming school and I really feel that it helped me retain what I had done that day.” Being involved in dog shows also helps Bongelli hone her grooming skills. when Bongelli purchased her first show dog, and has since hired a handler to show her dog. In joining her handler at shows and helping out at ringside, Bongelli’s interest in showing grew so much that she decided to start handling her own dogs and went on to purchase more dogs that were show quality. Although she has only been showing her own dogs for a short time, Bongelli enjoys the sport. It allows her to travel with her dogs, getting them out for some fun and bonding. Meeting new people and showcasing her grooming while learning new things make shows the perfect activity for Bongelli. “Just this past weekend I won a best baby puppy in show with my English Cocker puppy. I was over the moon!” Bongelli is happy doing exactly what she is doing now and will only continue to grow as a groomer and a competitor. She has begun teaching seminars and plans to do more of them along with competing as often as she can and showing her own dogs. She also wants to try other activities and sports with her dogs including obedience, dock diving and agility. For other left–handed groomers out there, Bongelli can relate to the challenges that arise, especially when starting out. She shares a bit of advice just for them. “Don’t use right-handed scissors! Embrace your left-handedness and don’t feel silly using exclusively left–handed scissors—they were made for you, and will perform better for you if you learn to use them correctly!” ✂

FOCUSING ON FELINES
KIN CARE
by Kim Raisanen
IN THE
CAT GROOMING SALON As groomers we see all kinds of skin ailments, but fleas and the dermatitis they may cause are by far the most common. Some cats are more sensitive than others when it comes to flea bites and they may exhibit more symptoms than the cat that is not at all bothered by the problem.
F
or instance, I have bathed cats infested with fleas and they seem oblivious to the pests. While on the other hand, I’ve groomed cats that have had adverse reactions to the fleabites and exhibit Flea Dermatitis. (Fig. 1)
FLEA DERMATITIS Flea Dermatitis is characterized by pink–reddish swollen skin around the fleabites and in severe cases these cats have bitten and scratched the area raw. These hypersensitive cats are prone to secondary infections by
46
self–inflicted injury to the skin. Our first instinct is to rid the cat (and our salons) of all fleas. However, we need to be careful not to cause more injury by trying to alleviate the problem. The best course of action is to bathe the cat with a safe flea shampoo specifically formulated for felines. We have to be mindful of the ingredients in the shampoos we use and I suggest when shopping around for cat–safe shampoos make sure you read the ingredient list first before purchasing. Toxins are absorbed through the skin and the foot–pads as well as by

licking and swallowing the shampoo. As we know, felines are meticulous self–groomers so anything on the skin will eventually end up in the cat. Our goal is to kill the fleas and not the cats. That may sound like a strong statement but I cannot stress this point any clearer. As a professional cat groomer you need to know what toxins may be in the products you use. Once you decide on a shampoo, follow the manufacturer’s directions exactly. If the label says soak for 10 minutes, don’t allow the shampoo to

TICKS Ticks (Fig. 2) are not as common on cats as they are dogs, but they are worth mentioning. If you see a tick on a cat that you are grooming and confident in your removal techniques, I suggest that you place the tick in a zip–lock bag
or a baby food jar with a little water in it. Write down the pets name and the date of removal and tape it to the container. This is a precautionary step in case the cat starts displaying symptoms of Lyme disease. The veterinarian will be able to test the tick for the disease only if it is kept in water not alcohol. Alcohol will ruin any evidence of Lyme disease. Once the tick is safely removed and contained, we can now groom the cat. If the mouthpiece of the tick
is still in the skin, recommend a veterinarian visit, we don’t want the skin to become infected. The veterinarian will remove any embedded tick and perhaps prescribe antibiotics. If the entire tick was removed and the skin isn’t irritated, go ahead and groom the cat as you usually would making sure to wash the affected area thoroughly.
FELINE ACNE Another bothersome condition we see is Feline Acne. This facial

Under normal conditions this oil is useful in keeping the skin nice and supple, but when too much is produced it can clog the hair follicles. When the hair follicles are blocked it leads to the formation of blackheads. The skin underneath can be oily, swollen and infected so we need to be careful not to cause any more trauma to the area. Do not
scrub this area and do not pick at the acne or remove any scabs. Since the acne is caused by excessive oil we can sprinkle some cornstarch on the area allowing it to absorb some of the oil. After a few minutes you can follow up by gently combing any clumps and debris from the hair. Any remaining oil can be washed away with a gentle cat shampoo. Do not use alcohol products. Not only are they toxic to
cats, they will burn and inflame the area even more! When I groom a cat with chin acne, I recommend that the owner switch food bowls to glass or stainless steel. I explain that plastic bowls can get microscopic grooves in them that harbor harmful bacteria. When the cat eats, it touches the dish with its chin and it can become infected. I also suggest that the chin area be cleaned after eating

BEHAVIOR CLIPS

WHAT PUPPIES
NEED
TO
KNOW
I
t is commonly accepted that puppies need training. Millions of them are trained at big–box stores, in parks, and privately, in–home. Many of these pups know how to sit, lie down and walk on a leash. Their puppy training was effective, but ultimately useless. That’s because no one ever takes a pup to the shelter because it can’t do simple obedience tasks. Pet owners take an animal to a shelter because it bites, soils the carpet, chews things to pieces and jumps on children and guests. Without solutions to these problems inexperienced pet owners eventually dump
54
the pup—most often, reluctantly. Note: Despite the fact that releasing an animal to a shelter is the responsible thing to do, humane zealots uniformly denigrate these people as being somehow deficient because they draw the line at a bite mark on their child’s cheek or repeated destruction of their carpets, furniture and other possessions. Virtually no shelters have training programs proven to stop such behaviors. The result is that the next time, the person is less likely to take an animal to a shelter or suggest that to a friend. In the world of the humane industry, we humans

must choose to live like dogs rather than teaching dogs to live with people. Not many people accept that choice, forever. The solution to this problem is a reevaluation of which behaviors are most important to pet owners and therefore most important to a pup’s survival. Learning how to safely and effectively curtail unacceptable behavior is the key to this process and the key to the pup’s longevity. As a groomer, you are a trusted professional and confidant. You have more contact with the owners and pups than anyone else—more than veterinarians, trainers or shelters.
If you can steer your clients through the hazards of puppy ownership, the animal lives and you keep a client.
PRACTICAL MATTERS FIRST Not every groomer wants to be a trainer or provide training services. You don’t have to. You do have to find someone who can help your clients. Here are some of the things you need to ask to make sure you find the right trainer for your clients' dogs. • Can you stop a single behavior, now? For about half of the dog training and behavior world, this question will cause a seizure. They will stammer out some kind of nonsense about teaching an alternate behavior with treats or “extinction”—meaning not giving a treat when the dog does the unacceptable behavior. These are pipe dreams.
If the dog is taught to sit as an alternative to jumping on people, it will still jump on people that look like anyone they have successfully jumped on, or when no treat is present or when they simply make a mistake. First, you didn’t teach the puppy to sink his teeth into you. It’s a normal behavior generated by instinct whether you reinforce it or not. Teaching the dog to sit rather than to jump on you is like suggesting that if I teach you French, you will never speak English. Animals use behaviors that work for them in specific contexts. If you
GroomertoGroomer.com
go to France, you speak French. If you meet a Frenchman in America, you speak French. If you meet an American in Paris, you speak English. If the dog is taught to sit as an alternative to jumping on people, it will still jump on people that look like anyone they have successfully jumped on, or when no treat is present or when they simply make a mistake.

Saying “NO” and bonking a dog with a pillow is effective at immediately stopping a dog from jumping on people. It is not harmful. It is lifesaving. • Trying to extinguish the behavior by withholding reinforcement is equally mindless. If you go to a pop machine that eats your money, that will not stop you from using pop machines. You will simply seek another one. If that one pays off, the behavior of “putting money in a pop machine” regenerates instantly—meaning extinction leaves a permanent possibility that the behavior can come back at full force, at any time. Learning to stop a behavior now requires knowing how to inhibit a behavior—and that can only be done
56
by tying an unpleasant consequence to it. You can stop a dog from jumping up on you by saying “NO” and swatting it with a throw pillow. Anyone who would rather see a dog dead than apply the equivalent of a serious pillow fight to save their life isn’t working with a full deck. There is no polite way to say that. Simply being in a shelter awaiting euthanasia is far more upsetting than a pillow fight in your own home. Note: It is considered unethical in all of the medical and psychological professions to withhold treatment

known to be effective. Saying “NO” and bonking a dog with a pillow is effective at immediately stopping a dog from jumping on people. It is not harmful. It is lifesaving. (Do not use a pillow with piping or buttons that could scratch an eye. Otherwise, you are good to go.) • Do you know how to fix a housetraining issue where the dog soils its crate? If a trainer attempts to scold or punish a dog for housetraining, the normal result is a dog that sneaks off and makes sure no one is watching when it must pee or poop. Housetraining solutions must be positive—preferably with treats. have found someone worth knowing. • Do you use punishment for housetraining? This is a deal breaker. If a trainer attempts to scold or punish a dog for housetraining, the normal result is a dog that sneaks off and makes sure no one is watching when it must pee or poop. Housetraining solutions must be positive—preferably with treats. • Are you “all positive”? If the answer is yes, this is also a deal breaker because it demonstrates a lack of logic. The act of putting
a dog in a crate to stop a behavior like jumping on guests is a form of punishment. It is not the most powerful or speediest way of stopping the problem, but it may work—or not. If someone claims they are “all positive” it means they would not use this tool to modify a dog’s behavior. Likewise, they are implying that the unpleasantness of cutting out a matt somehow traumatizes a dog. After all, if “harsh” treatment causes behavioral trauma, grooming salons aren’t exempt in the dog’s mind. This is a
clear indication that their agenda is more important than saving lives. Teaching dogs to do mock obedience behaviors without teaching survival behaviors is a questionable and widespread practice. The most common complaint of pet owners after taking an obedience class is that it didn’t work in the real world. Finding a trainer who understands the needs of your clients is your best tool in keeping pets in their homes— and in your salon. ✂

I walked into a new client’s home recently and noticed my magnet on their refrigerator. What makes this unusual is that I haven’t used that logo in about 10 years. But there it was. On her refrigerator.
I
asked her where she got the magnet from and was told she took it off the side of my mobile grooming van quite some time ago. She didn’t have a dog at the time as she was in school, but always knew she would have a dog one day. And now her dog was getting his first groom. I love magnets as a marketing tool. Why? They are useful and last forever. Once on the refrigerator, always on the refrigerator. They hold up artwork, appointment cards, and lists. They are easy to give away and are kept. How many business cards have you received and simply just tossed? My magnet was sitting on someone’s refrigerator for at least 10 years before they called me. Large companies market differently than small to medium sized businesses. Large companies budget oodles of money for marketing. In fact, in 2013 Petco’s marketing budget was over 15 million dollars. I don’t know about you, but I don’t have that kind of money lying around. Large companies use repetitive ads. We are constantly bombarded by their images and messages. It is a very expensive way to get name recognition. We, as small businesses, can’t compete in that manner. However, magnets are our answer to repetitive ads. Every time a client walks past or opens their refrigerator, they see our ad.
WHAT SHOULD YOU INCLUDE ON YOUR MAGNET? • Your logo. This is a visual representation of your business. Make it memorable and in line with

that could include your magnetic business card. • Most pet stores have community boards. They usually do not have enough pin tacks though. But for magnets, that’s not a problem if there is a metal edge around the board. Or simply carry your own pin tacks. • If you groom for shelters, ask them to include your magnet with their adoption paperwork. • Bring them to events. Ask the event coordinator if you can include them in any gift bags they give out. Bring plenty. I have never run out of brochures or business cards, but have underestimated the number of magnets I needed. • Place them on the side of your vehicle. This works even if you are not a mobile groomer. People can walk past and take a card while shopping. • Give them to current clients. They can, in turn, give them out to friends and family who asked who groomed their dog or cat. This is my current magnet I give out to my clients (Fig. 1). It has a space for them to write their next appointment on, as well as lists some new services I am looking to promote. New THE
GROOMING SALON PART ONE: CHOOSING A LOCATION by Kathy Rose
The creation of a new grooming salon is a multifaceted endeavor that requires extensive research, thought and time. A high functioning floor plan design in the right location with a scrupulously executed lease and well thought out equipment choices will bring years of

hoosing a location, understanding the commercial lease, hiring a general contractor, creating a floor plan, equipment choices and salon set up make this a multifaceted project. In this salon build-out series I will try to demystify some of the terminology and provide some helpful hints to get you started on the right path.
AFFORDABILITY Probably the most important concern when searching for a commercial space is finding a place that you can afford. You should have a clear estimate of how much rent or mortgage your business can afford
64
monthly, given its projected revenue and expenses. A detailed business plan is mandatory and should be created well in advance of choosing a location and signing a lease. Have a clear plan of your immediate square footage requirements and possible capacity for expansion. Keep in mind that a lot of business can be packed into a small space if the space is designed wisely.
INVESTIGATE THE AREA MARKET Research the area market. This will not only tell you if you can afford a particular area, but may give you bargaining leverage with the landlord. Investigate rent options and

rates in your area and familiarize yourself with what is available, and at what cost. Brokers and agents are good sources of information for rental costs.
VERIFY LEASE TYPE Determine what type of lease is customarily used in your selected area. Different locations may offer different types of leases. The lease type may become a significant factor in your location choice. Be sure to identify exactly what is included in the rent for each location you research, such as utilities, taxes, insurance, common area maintenance and existing HVAC repairs or replacement.

ZONING Local zoning regulation— referred to as land use ordinances —doesn’t allow all businesses to practice in all places. Zoning laws vary from place to place and may affect the type of business and regulate specific activities. Activities such as parking, signs, water restrictions, air quality, waste management, noise control and the use of pesticides come into play. Keep in mind that pet related businesses may require more stringent adherence to local laws. Don’t rely on the previous occupant or the landlord to answer your zoning concerns. Previous tenants may have been grand–fathered or received special considerations called a zoning variance. Verify with the proper zoning authorities that your selected

space is legal for your business. For more information, research: planning, zoning and building for your county, city or municipality.
ELECTRICITY, PLUMBING & CLIMATE CONTROL Make sure the space meets your electrical and climate control needs. The addition of electrical outlets is not a huge issue. But the condition and capacity of the main circuit panel and the condition of the existing heating and air conditioning equipment is important. Carefully inspect the HVAC system to insure that it is adequate for the space. Some zoning ordinances have more stringent ventilation requirements when animals are being housed. Although plumbing lines can be moved to accommodate needs, it is
costly. Using the proximity of existing drain and plumbing lines is usually a bonus and will save you in build-out dollars. Spaces formerly occupied by hair salons make great makeover choices because they have abundant plumbing lines and drains, and usually the flooring is non porous. Make sure the location has adequate parking with easy access to your store. Evaluate the green areas to determine where the pets will relieve themselves. Keep in mind that pet litter left by discourteous clients remains your responsibility. Pay attention to the shopping center or area surrounding the space you are considering. Is it well maintained?
