GROOMING
MATTERS by Daryl Conner
W
hat is it that makes some people able to maintain a sunny outlook while others seem to become mired in the negative minutia of day to day existence? Believe it or not, happiness can be a choice. This idea was first introduced to me when I was a sullen college student. “Man is master of his mood,” Dr. Ken West told a full classroom. I was dumbstruck. Until that moment I thought my hormone driven moods were the master of me. In the book, The Conquest of Happiness, philosopher Bertrand Russell writes, “Happiness is not, except in very rare cases, something

that drops into the mouth, like a ripe fruit.... Happiness must be, for most men and woman, an achievement rather than a gift from the gods, and in this achievement, effort - both inward and outward - must play a great part.” In the 1970’s researchers followed people who had won the lottery and found that a year later, they were no happier than people who were not lottery winners. This hedonic adaptation suggests that we each have a baseline of happiness. No matter what happens, good or bad, the effect on our happiness is temporary, and we tend to revert to our baseline level. Some people

naturally have a higher baseline of happiness than others. That is due to genetics, in part, but it is also largely influenced by how we think. There are steps that can be taken to assist our nimble minds into feeling happier: • Start each day on a good note. When you first awaken, take a moment to think some happy thoughts. Think about how warm and comfortable your bed is. Envision something that is going to happen that day that you are looking forward to. Remember something you are grateful for. • Do something you enjoy first thing. Do you love a great cup of

coffee? Have one. And take time to really appreciate it. Don’t just swill it down, waiting for the jolt of caffeine to kick start your day. Savor the scent, the flavor, the warmth of the cup under your fingers. Don’t let the little happy things in your life go unappreciated. • Add up all the small, joyful things that happen during your day. Write them down. If you enjoyed a marvelous breakfast, saw an amazing sunset, enjoyed playing with your dog, or had a great laugh with a friend, add them up and take note of them. It will help elevate your outlook. • Take time to feel deeply grateful for the things you have. This is a very effective way to be happy. If you feel grateful for the things you have, you not only become happier, but it also helps you bring more good things into

your life. Take running water, for instance. Though I bet everyone reading my words has clean, running water, most of us do not take time to appreciate it. 750 million people around the world do not have access to safe, plentiful water. Next time you fill a glass or take a long, steamy shower, be thankful for this often ignored blessing. • Tie acknowledging gratitude to something you already do. For instance, list things you are grateful for in your mind while you brush your teeth, or last thing as you close your eyes at night. Begin and/or end every work day with a momentary gratitude pause. • Train yourself to view your glass as half-full instead of halfempty. Your love broke up with you? This opens an opportunity to find someone who really appreciates you. You lost your job? Think of the

wonderful time this is to find a much better one. Adjust your thinking so that no matter what happens to you, there is a nugget of goodness to be found. • Put yourself in situations where marvelous things are likely to happen to you. It is easier to remain up-beat if you set yourself up for success. Doing things like cheating on your partner or shoplifting, while temporarily thrilling, seldom end well. Before you act, ask yourself, “Am I setting myself up for failure or success?” • Scientists studied motivation in the workplace and found that one of the most powerful causes of positive employee morale and happiness at work happened when people felt that they were moving forward and making real progress. What can you do to help you move forward in your work?
Take time to say thank you to those who do normally thankless tasks. This might mean handing a roll of Lifesavers to a toll taker or thanking the local cop as he passes by for helping to keep your community safe. • Leonie Dawson, a famous selfhelp author, suggests that people have a “MIT list.” This stands for Most Important Things. Try this: before you start each work day, write down three MIT’s you plan to accomplish. Do them. Cross them off your list. At the end of the day, look at your list and acknowledge that you made progress. It’s a little step that can help pave the road to happy. • Be in charge of your professional growth. Ask for specific help from your employer if
necessary, but march to the music of your own plan and goals. You have the most to gain from growing and the most to lose if you stay stagnant. • Take time to say thank you to those who do normally thankless tasks. This might mean handing a roll of Lifesavers to a toll taker or thanking the local cop as he passes by for helping to keep your community safe. Try it. It feels good. • Do what tasks you dread early in the day. Then they are done and you can focus on more pleasant things. That super matted dog?

Tackle it first. The phone call you want to avoid? Do it now and get it over with. • Learn to forgive. In a study of college students, an attitude of forgiveness contributed to better heart health. It can be said that forgiveness actually heals hearts. • Get enough sleep. Study after study confirms it, the more sleep you get the happier you tend to be. Getting even one extra hour of sleep per night makes the average person happier than making $60,000 more in annual income! • Eat well. Healthy foods give your body and mind the energy they need to function optimally. Some scientists speculate that unhealthy diets are responsible for brain shrinkage and certain brain diseases like depression and dementia. • Do something kind and compassionate for someone or

something. Give an unexpected gift to someone or feed a stray animal. Acts like these release dopamine, the neurotransmitter responsible for feeling happiness, and benefit all involved! • Know what makes your heart sing, and make time for that in your life. Does a walk in the woods or along the beach elevate your mood? When was the last time you made time for activities that uplift you? Here is the bad news. Our brains are better at remembering the negative over the positive. For example, one study found that the negative impact of setbacks at work was three times more powerful than the positive impact of making progress. We are conditioned by evolution to seek out what is wrong and focus on it. As cave people, this helped us protect ourselves from
danger, but for modern humans, it makes it trickier for us to feel happy. The good news is that you can fight natural negative bias. Your brain can be trained to remember positive things, by doing some or all of the things listed above. As professional pet groomers, one of the most challenging parts of our already difficult job is dealing with people. You can train yourself to enjoy human nature. Let’s be honest, some grooming customers do really strange things. When faced with these foibles you can choose to: • Be irritated • Be amused Being irritated makes you miserable. Being amused helps you find creative ways to work around the limitations of others. For example, if Mrs. S. insists on literally measuring the length of her dog’s coat with a
ruler after you have groomed it, to insure you did, indeed, leave 1.5 inches of hair all over, you can either feel totally exasperated or let your mind wander to what other quirks she might have, and how it would be to live with her. How, do you suppose, MISTER S. measures up? Taking control of our moods can seem like a daunting task, but really, isn’t the price of happiness worth some effort? In life our days may seem long, but the years are short. Let’s make the most of the time we are allotted and be as happy as we can be. ✂

Groom Expo West 2015 was a huge success with nearly 4,000 attendees, full classrooms, a bustling trade show, and exciting competitions. The Pasadena Convention Center was again a wonderful place for this event, in the heart of beautiful Pasadena, CA. Nearly $11,000 in prize money was given away to the winners of the grooming competitions throughout the weekend. The Purina Rescue Round-up Contest and Groomer to Groomer Creative Styling Contest were the most popular among spectators. The AKC Salon Certification: Safety in the Shop course made its debut and got great reviews from all who attended. All other seminars did extremely well and the industry top speakers were very pleased with the turnout and positive feedback that they received. Thank you to all of our attendees, competitors and speakers for a great show! Are you already looking forward to next year? So are we! Join us again in the same location, February 4th-7th 2016. ✂

BEHAVIOR CLIPS by Gary Wilkes
DOG SPITE AND
HUMAN IMAGINATION
O
f all the disconnects between dog owners and their dogs, the biggest, most glaring, completely illogical, widely held and damaging myth is that dogs can be spiteful. Nope. Nada. Nicht. Ain’t happening. To understand my adamant belief that doggie spite doesn’t happen, conduct this simple experiment based on actual events. Borrow a typical pair of fivemonth-old miniature Dachshunds. Leave them loose in your house while you go to work. Leave your rent money
16
Groomer to Groomer • Vol 34 Ed 4 • April 2014
on the coffee table. Tell the landlord to drop by after work for the money. Yes, the little darlings are going to eat the money. No, they won’t do it out of spite. They don’t understand rent or landlords or what kind of trouble you can get into if you don’t pay on time. They don’t even understand how you get your pay or how you made the landlord appear. Also, they aren’t going to do it because they are frustrated that you aren’t there. They will do it because they like to tear things apart – it’s in their genes. If you want to test
GroomertoGroomer.com
my theory further, put the rent money right next to a Dr. Scholl’s insole, well-used. OK, which item is going to be destroyed? You guessed it, the insole. That is a slam dunk. Elmer and Eddie will destroy things because A) They are dogs and B) They like stinky consumables. End of mystery? Not for most people. Despite evidence to the contrary, it is perfectly normal for human beings to assume that this kind of destruction was done out of spite. We are, after all, humans and humans
are capable of spite. If a dog does something that resembles human behavior, we naturally think it’s the same behavior. When a dog cocks its ears at something odd, we assume they are contemplating it. In reality, they are moving their ears to give slightly dissimilar signals to the brain. Changing the stereo input improves the brain’s ability to audibly locate the source of the sound. This instinctive “head-cocking” behavior is common to humans and dogs, but the contemplating part is only common to us. It never dawns on us that maybe dogs don’t have the hardware to duplicate human-style emotions, strategies and actions. That’s what makes a belief in spite damaging. If you think your dog was spiteful, it causes a whole set of emotional difficulties. After all, if your dog
was trying to get back at you for something, it’s either an act of defiance or it means you have failed somehow and your dog was justified in getting back at you. That’s not healthy. You may start to think ill of your dog or ill of yourself, though neither conclusion is warranted. Your dog loves you and you love your dog. Speculating on a dog’s sneakiness, spitefulness, anger and acting out misses that fact and weakens your bond. To clear up the issues once and for all, here’s the bottom line. No matter how much you think it looks like spite, that motivation is impossible for dogs. No, that isn’t just my opinion. It’s a biological fact. Their brains really aren’t built for it. If you doubt the accuracy of such a firm statement, we will need to go a little deeper into the controversy for you to see the light.

For starters, let’s look at the definition of spite… Spite 1: Petty ill will or hatred with the disposition to irritate, annoy, or thwart. A dog that bears ill will toward his owner is a pretty rare commodity. Historically, the primary reason dogs exist is to live with humans and bug the heck out of them in a non-petty, good-will-type way. They lick our faces, fetch our slippers, keep us warm and look cute. They also make adorable sounds when you rub their ears – kind of an ooohhh aaahhh that is simply irresistible. The vast majority of dogs love their owners to the point of risking annoyance – but, and it’s a very big but, they annoy us because they simply want more of our time and affection or they want to do things that dogs like to do. It’s not the dog

that has a disposition to annoy or irritate, it is the human who has a disposition to be annoyed or irritated at dogs’ natural, loving, annoying behaviors. A big part of this misunderstanding comes from a mistaken assumption. In reality, dogs don’t understand our emotions, even if they can perceive changes in our outward emotional displays. To be spiteful, you have to be able to interpret the emotional reaction of someone else. Dogs can’t do that. (According to some women, men can’t do that, either.) Even if your dog could do that, he still wouldn’t be capable of spite. To be spiteful you must be able to perfectly interpret human emotions AND understand “later”. Sorry, they simply can’t do that. In reality, your dog is forever a creature of “now”. He will tip over his only source of Producer of the
water on the hottest day of the year, repeatedly, even though it could kill him. He will dig out from under your gate to chase a cat, even though he has no idea how to get home again. To test this, ask him to “sit” – later. Sorry, it’s not going to happen. Ask yourself, if he can’t sit for a treat, later, how is he going to destroy your favorite shoes in order to make you angry, later? Face it, dogs don’t understand any form of delay. The best you can do is create a pre-learned latency from the time they hear a signal until they actually perform a behavior. That doesn’t mean they can tell time. Consider that dogs have little to no patience because they don’t grasp delayed consequences as we do. That’s why dogs who suffer from separation anxiety don’t respond when you tell them you’ll only be gone five minutes. Dogs don’t understand five minutes from now or
VAC-GROOM Clipper Vacuum System NEW for 2015!
five hours – they only understand now. The reality is that dogs simply aren’t humans. They are like us in many ways, but completely incapable of understanding concepts such as time as a linear continuum and extrinsic value. They do things because of internal motivations that have nothing to do with the way we feel. They chew things for fun. If it’s a five dollar wallet or a $5,000 pair of hearing aids, it’s all about the crunch. It’s not about the money. It’s not about making you angry because they didn’t get their every wish gratified. Dogs are better than that. They stand alone among all the species on this planet as our friends and devoted companions. The last thing they offer their owners is ill will for the future. The last thing they want for themselves is their master’s disapproval, now. ✂

This may be an extreme example, but when you go to a professional, you expect to receive first-class service - and you assume that the professional will be using the proper tools and products to complete the job or service. And, that’s exactly what your clients presume to receive from you. Pet parents place their precious fur babies in your care, and they have a right to expect that the products, tools, and equipment that you use on their pets are top quality. They don’t want to walk into your salon and see some homemade

bathing contraption in your bathtub, or to see your clippers connected to a shop vac that sounds as loud as a jumbo jet taking off. And, if an owner brings in their pet and tells you that they saw a flea or two on it – do you say, “No problem. I’ll just bathe him in this dish soap and that will probably get rid of most of them.” Dish soap? Really? Is that how a professional conducts business? Would you like it if your hair stylist washed your hair with something from the bargain bin at the dollar store? And, you could

attend seminars and trade shows. At trade shows you can see and try out lots of the latest equipment and you can often get some really great deals during the show. You can also visit the booths of many manufacturers of shampoo and other grooming products that you use. Again – purchasing these items at the special show prices can save you a substantial amount of money and allow you to stock up on your favorites. Time is money and knowledge is power. These statements are very true in the pet care industry. The more you know, by learning better and faster ways to groom pets and run your business – the more you can earn. Attending seminars is one of the best ways to learn the newest grooming techniques, get great ideas for low-cost or no-cost advertising that really work, discover ways to provide outstanding customer service that will build a
loyal following, and get new ideas to show you how to retail the items that you already use on your client’s pets. Networking with fellow attendees will help you learn even more timesaving tips and get lots of business building ideas. There are many creative ways that you can build a successful business and do it economically. You could advertise a new service that you learned at a seminar – de-shed treatments, pet facials, ‘paw’dicure treatments, etc. and offer them at an introductory price for a limited time. Do things that other salons may not offer. Don’t just clip toenails – use a rotary tool to file them smooth. Pet parents love the finishing touches, like bows, bandanas, and cologne. And, there’s a growing demand for pets to have a little ‘bling’ and maybe a splash or two of color.
Successful professionals don’t cut corners. Using quality products will always give you better results. They will cut down on de-matting, deshedding and drying time. And, using the best equipment you can obtain will allow you to save time, help you increase your income, and reduce wear and tear on your body. Of course, your appearance and that of your workplace has a lot to do with whether people perceive you as a professional or not. Take a good look at yourself and your salon the way your clients see it. Is everything clean and inviting, with no unpleasant odors? Do you look and act like a professional as you warmly greet your clients and their pets? Are your clients proud to tell their friends that their pets are groomed at your salon? If you see things that can be improved, don’t put off doing them.
In fact, you can be thinking and planning how you can make you and your business appear more professional to your client’s eyes whenever you have a moment of free time…like the next time you are in the dentist’s chair holding that ice cube on your poor, throbbing tooth. ✂

his is not a new breed but could be a designer dog by the choice of the owner. I started with just a few simple tools, color mediums, and one cream colored Pomeranian with tons of coat. The color products I chose for this dog are two different blacks that complement each when mixed together and do well at coloring the sometimes harder to color hair, a small application brush as well as firm paint brushes, and a mixing tray to make it easy to mix up small amounts of dye at a time so there is no wasted product. This client wanted a lion trim on her dog so the next step is to cut off the excessive coat on the dog, leaving it in a rough cut of the lion trim (Fig 1). I then mixed equal parts of Avatar black with Kiss Express Jet Black and cut out a small hole in a

waste basket liner to use to protect the body of the dog while dying the ears (Fig 2). Carefully slip the bag over the head and past the ears, exposing them but keeping as much of the neck protected as possible. Then with your application brush, apply the dye mixture to the ears (Fig 3). The plastic bag wrap will prevent color accidents during and while the color is setting. To create the ring tail, begin by taking off any excess hair with your thinners or chunkers. Start at the base of the tail and paint the first ring, move down, leaving a space and start the next ring by brushing a thin layer of dye all the way around the tail (Fig 4). Repeat this all the way to the end of the tail then carefully wrap the tail in foil to protect it while dying the rest of the design onto the dog (Fig 5). Now we are going to move on to
the feet. With the same brush, apply the dye to all 4 feet. Then with the smaller paint brush, make small rings around the legs, just above where you dyed the feet (Fig 6). Let the dye set for at least 20 minutes after the last dye was applied. Rinse with cool (not cold) water until the water runs clear, wash and rinse again. Dry and style your dog as usual and enjoy the cuteness overload! ✂ Making the World more Colorful, one dog at a time...

“B
ut I do brush him!” We’ve all heard it. We’re all cynical, because we all know the dog would not be matted if he had been actually brushed…right? Except - have you visited a retail pet shop in the past 30 years? The top selling brush in America has pins on one side, bristles on the other. I have never used one on any dog of any breed I have ever groomed. The pin side? Possibly for the drape coated show dogs, but the bristles would grab the coat and cause static and matt it up. I am told the bristle side is good for a close, Boxer type coat, but I have Whippets, and I use a Vista slicker. My point is that the retailers are not promoting slicker brushes, and certainly not curved slicker brushes. Obviously, they are not showing

anyone how to use a dog brush, either. Our clients who love their dogs are using THE WRONG BRUSH. Who should show dog owners how to brush their dog? I believe it is the person they got the dog from - be it a breeder, a backyard breeder, a pet shop, or a shelter/rescue. It does no good for the person selling, or handing off the dog, to tell the new owner, “Go to a groomer and they’ll tell you what you need to know.” First of all, as we all know, if the new owners aren’t prepared for the expense or time involved, the dog may be neglected. Is that fair to the dog? No, yet that is what’s happening. As a teenager, I worked briefly for Fred Alderman of Dynasty Afghan Hounds. You did not get a dog from Fred until you had spent
GroomertoGroomer.com
a day grooming with him. He didn’t want to hear that you had no idea how much equipment you would need, how much it would cost, how long it would take, or you didn’t want to do it. He would rather you just not buy a dog from him. Well, what’s done is done. If you don’t take the time with every new client to show them what brush and comb you use, how you use it, and how often it will need to be done, who will? Most people will choose to keep their pets clipped short, but they will stretch out the interval between groomings. For those who want long coat, I explain that matting is caused by dirt, moisture, and static electricity. Matting starts at the moving parts of the dog: around the ears, the collar, under the chin, the armpits, the groin, the tail
and the hocks and pasterns (the ‘ankles’). They may need a curved rake in addition to a slicker brush and a metal comb. I also tell them that the collar (or harness) will matt up their dogs. Dogs shouldn’t be wearing harnesses as collars (the whole social cue problem is another issue). I tell pet owners to brush the dog once a week. For most dogs, it won’t even take five minutes! I urge them to get a bath matt and put it on the washer or dryer - up off the floor - for a small dog, and for the larger dogs, a small stand. Dogs behave better when they are not in their territory: the floor. If owners have to wash their hands after brushing the dog, the dog needs a bath. Again, I strongly urge them to brush out those ‘trouble’ parts of the dog first. I remind them that suds do not clean the dog, but the active ingredients in
Since I have been showing my clients how to maintain their dogs at home, rarely do I get grief about having to shave a matted dog. the shampoo do. I tell them to keep an empty shampoo or dishwashing liquid bottle to dilute the shampoo, and to brush the shampoo through the dog’s coat. This will coat every hair, as well as pull out loose hair, and the dog will dry faster. Also, if they are going to try to do some cutting, I advise my clients to get double edge thinning shears. I tell them I generally do not thin out coats because the short hair weaving into long hair makes the dog matt even more, but if they are compelled to clip around their dog’s eyes, they will not make a big boo-boo with thinning shears.
Since I have been showing my clients how to maintain their dogs at home, rarely do I get grief about having to shave a matted dog. The fact is, when you de-matt, you are not actually saving hair, but breaking it off. It’s painful to the dog. It’s one thing to do a show dog who has been trained to relax while you attempt to save coat, and quite another for the poor little dog whose owner won’t make any effort to bond with the dog and get the dog under control. We are not in the dog torture business. ✂

og and cat ears are nothing short of amazing. Did you know they could hear in the 45KHz range, while we are limited to 23KHz? That’s why you can shake a bag of treats and your dog will come running from the other end of the property. Human ears have three measly muscles as compared to 18 in dogs and 32 in cats. Dog and cat ears are so expressive that they can act as behavioral cues. Depending on their placement, a groomer can tell if a dog or cat may be aggressive, fearful, or calm. The anatomy of dog and cat ears is similar. The ear canal is L-shaped. It goes straight down and

then turns into a right angle toward the brain. Past that turn is the eardrum. There are three parts: the external, middle and inner ear. Clean only the visible surface of the pet’s interior ear with damp, not wet, cotton ball. If you are properly trained, you can flush a dog’s ear, but not a cat. Cat’s inner ears are more sensitive than a dog. The external ear is the visible part on the outside of the head and the canal. There is not much variation in the set and shape of cat’s ears. They are triangular and sit on top of the head. But that is the only minimalist feature of their ears. The fluid in their semi-circular canal
GroomertoGroomer.com
rotates and equalizes in alignment with the head. It is why cats almost always land on their feet. And because each ear has 32 muscles, they move independently of each other. A cat can look at you and listen to something to the right or left without turning their heads. Human mothers have a similar ability in which their eyes can rotate to the back of their heads and see what is going on behind them. Each ear position has different behavioral cues: • Upright means the cat is alert and friendly. • Tilted at a right angle means the cat is afraid.

When the dog’s ears fall naturally, it indicates relaxation. Belligerent or aggressive dogs will attempt to make themselves as large as possible. Ears will sit higher and may point either forward or back. On the flip side, if the dog is frightened, they will try to appear as small as possible with ears flat against the head or out to the side. Either scenario is a bite risk. Most chronic ear conditions are found in the external ear. The middle ear is filled with air. It contains the eardrum, mallet, anvil and stirrup. They transmit sounds to the inner ear. Problems here can affect balance.

The inner ear is filled with fluid. Sound changes from airwaves to the nerve impulses, then onward to the brain. It contains the temporal bone, Organ of Corti and the Eight Cranial Nerve. Problems here can result in deafness, facial paralysis, and balance issues. A healthy ear is pink on the inside with no odor or discharge and no exterior hair loss. Like any fine-tuned instrument, there are a host of issues that affect its precision. • Allergy Otitis is the most common cause of recurrent ear infections. The usual culprits are food, environmental, mold or dust allergens. The ears are itchy and inflamed and are usually accompanied by itchy paws. Additionally, there may be an odor or black, gunky discharge. • Tick, flea, fly, mosquito bites, as well as mites and demodex can cause ear pain, itching, swelling, hair loss and crusty skin. • Foreign bodies, such as foxtails, cotton balls, ingrown hairs, cysts and resin powder (used
to pull ear hair) can cause irritation and infection. You may see the obstruction with a flashlight, but do not probe. You will only make the problem worse. • Due to the warm moist environment, floppy-eared dogs are prone to staph, yeast and bacterial infections. I shave the inside of the ear of those dogs that are prone to recurrent ear infections. The ears may feel warm to the touch; the dog’s head may tilt, in addition to a discharge and odor. While rare, an ear infection can spread internally or cause peripheral vestibular syndrome. • Water in the ears can set up the environment for a yeast or bacterial infection. Water can enter the ear canal from bathing or swimming. You should clean out wet ears with a good quality ear cleaner. • Externally, cancer may appear as dark, scaly or hairless patches. • Hormonal disorders such as diabetes, thyroid or Cushings disease can cause hair loss and itchy red skin.

Cuts along the ear margins have a harder time healing. • Hematomas are caused by trauma, vigorous head shaking or immune-related disorders. The dog will have swollen, squishy-feeling ear flaps. They can burst open during the grooming process. Both hematomas and wounds can bleed profusely. I don’t recommend styptic powder as it stings on contact, makes a mess, and slows healing. All groomers should be trained in pet first aid to effectively clean and wrap an injury that occurs while in your care before going to the veterinarian. This training may reduce the severity of the injury, as well as speed healing. There is so much we can learn about the pets in our care, by simply observing and learning about their amazing ears. ✂
M
• Psoriasis-like crusting along the ear margins, while in itself is not bad, but may point to an underlying medical condition. Possibilities include skin calcifications due to Cushings, sarcoptic mange, seborrheic ear margin dermatitis, vascular and other hormonal disorders. • When informing a pet owner of possible ear conditions, it is important not to offer a diagnosis. Write down a description of your findings such as: red, inflamed, black discharge, and so forth. Suggest they may wish to discuss this with their veterinarian. I always preface the conversation with, “If this was my pet……” • The high velocity dryer can blow out an eardrum. It is best to protect the ears with a Happy Hoodie when using this dryer. • Ears are often injured when pets play rough or fight, as well as by grooming equipment. Puncture wounds need treatment BEFORE they close up. If allowed to close, the trapped bacteria will cause an infection or sepsis (blood infection).

BUT MY DOG DOESN’T HAVE
E by Colleen Mendelsohn e
DVM Diplomate Amercan College of Veterinary Dermatology

t may seem baffling to you that veterinarians will emphasize and re-emphasize flea bite prevention for pets when neither you nor the owners have ever noted the presence of fleas or “flea dirt.” It is sometimes difficult to convince pet owners to consider flea bite allergy as the primary trigger for their dog’s itching and hairloss on the rump or tail when owners insist that “My pet doesn’t have fleas!” Flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) results from a true hypersensitivity to flea salivary allergen, not from heavy flea infestations. If a client lives in a geographical area in which fleas are
36
Groomer to Groomer • Vol 34 Ed 5 • May 2015
common or in home environments, apartments or condos that are flea infested and their pet is flea allergic, they are at increased risk of exhibiting clinical signs of FAD. Flea allergic signs develop because of exposure to flea salivary allergen that is transmitted into the skin via the flea bite. Fleas must take a blood meal and while they are engorging on the blood of the pet, they are transmitting their saliva and the allergen directly into the pet. A single bite is generally not enough to initiate a flea bite hypersensitivity reaction, however the length of time that a flea feeds and the numbers of fleas feeding will
GroomertoGroomer.com
directly correlate with the amount of allergen to which the pet will be exposed. Numerous fleas taking a blood meal (and dying) can be enough to start a reaction despite a flea infestation never being established. In fact, infrequent or intermittent flea bites can perpetuate severe symptoms. Additionally, FAD animals spend so much time chewing and grooming, they often remove fleas before you or the pet owner get the opportunity to see them. There are numerous issues that owners and pet professionals need to consider in dealing and considering fleas and the problems that they create

for flea allergic pets. Problem Scenarios Incorrect perception: If a pet owner is still seeing fleas just days after application of a product; that is actually expected and is not a result of the product “failing.” Fleas are still hatching in the environment and are expected to be present. Even if live fleas are found on the pet, in most cases the flea product will prevent prolonged feeding times which will result in an inability to reproduce and establish infestations. Additional pets not being treated in the household: If a pet owner has other pets that are not being treated, those pets are providing healthy blood meals for those fleas to continue to flourish in the environment and controlling the FAD patient will be more difficult. Bathing: If your clients are telling you that they are faithfully applying the topical flea bite prevention product but they still have signs attributed to flea bite allergy; it is time to examine how often they are coming in to be bathed. If a pet owner is applying topical therapy, depending on the shampoo, bathing will likely reduce the efficacy of the product. If the pet is being bathed more than monthly (which is absolutely necessary for almost all allergic patients) then consider recommending that they discuss with their veterinarian changing that pet to an oral product that is not affected by bathing. Repellents: Pyrethrins and Permethrins are not good options as a single treatment modality to prevent infestation, let alone treat FAD. However, they can be used if the pet owner knows in advance that their pet is going to be going into a potentially flea infested environment such as the dog park, walking in an area with a lot of feral cats, or even grooming appointments.

The product doesn’t last the entire month: Most flea products will have lessened efficacy as the next application due time is approaching. This may mean that more fleas take blood meals (and then lay eggs) before they die. For FAD patients, this results in increased clinical signs, and because a flare of FAD can last weeks, it is hard to associate the worsening with the timing of product application. If this is a concern, pet owners should consider discussing using combination therapy for heightened flea bite prevention with their veterinarian. Inappropriate application method: This is the most common problem with the topically applied products. Mistakes often made include incorrect dosing, accidentally wiping it off after application with halter collars or other clothing, applying to a wet animal or immediately after a bath, or simply not
applying to the skin and leaving the bulk of the product in the hair coat. Environmental Treatment Options Environmental controls and measures aimed at controlling all stages of the flea life cycle are numerous. These can be very important as the majority of flea populations are the immature stages and live in your pet’s surroundings (unlike the adult that resides on the pet). Some options for clients include: Premise spray insecticides: These will be the most effective when combined with growth hormone regulators in order to kill both the adults as well as prevent juvenile forms (larvae) from maturing into adult fleas. These are available through professional exterminators as well as at hardware stores for self application. Predatory Nematodes: These are
microscopic “worms” that prey on numerous insect pests that have a larval stage in the soil. These are available for self application from hardware stores and nurseries. However, these nematodes are very sensitive and have limited efficacy in most situations. Borate Powders: These powders are safely applied to indoor carpets. They will result in an environment that will dehydrate fleas and other pests. These can be self applied and professionally applied. • Keep vegetation near the home or kennel mowed or clipped. • Leaves and other organic debris covering moist ground should be removed to allow the ground to dry. • Keep the area free of carrier hosts such as free roaming cats and dogs, raccoons, squirrels and opossums.

Making the Pet Comfortable The pruritus (itching) from a single flea bite hypersensitivity episode can take days to weeks to subside, even after the fleas are gone. Therefore some pets benefit from additional antiinflammatory medications and owners should be encouraged to discuss this with their veterinarians. If infection is present, treatment with antibiotics is also necessary. Pruritus associated with infection is often underestimated and managing allergic skin disease generally requires a multi-modal approach. Treating the pet and environment for fleas as well as managing the skin of the pet to control both inflammation from the allergic response as well as any secondary infection is critical for the best management of the flea allergic patient. ✂

However, when you consider that many small businesses fold every year, it becomes clear that banking your retirement solely on the success of your business might not be the best idea. There is no guarantee that your

business will continue to grow or even maintain its current value. If your business is worth less than you were counting on at the time you planned to retire, you could be forced to continue working or sell it for less than what you were expecting. As a small business owner, it’s imperative that you have a business succession plan in place that will

accomplish what you truly want. As you know, the grooming business is hard on the body, so during your working years, it’s important to make sure you are actively building your asset base to compliment the probable sale of your business. Business owners often assume that their businesses will be their main source of retirement funds, but that strategy could be riskier than you think. It’s generally not wise to put all your eggs in one basket. Broadly diversifying your assets may help protect against risk. A simplified employee pension plan (SEP) is a deferredcompensation arrangement that is similar to a profit-sharing plan; it’s tailor-made for small business owners in the grooming industry like yourself. It can be set up by selfemployed individuals, as well as sole proprietorships and partnerships. You receive tax deductions for plan contributions made to employees’ accounts, and employees do not pay taxes on SEP contributions until they begin taking distributions (generally, in retirement). Annual contributions are limited to the lesser of $53,000 or 25% of your compensation (in 2015). Contributions are made on a discretionary basis, which means that you can decide each year whether or not to contribute, as well as how much to contribute, which means you’re in control! When you begin taking distributions from a SEP IRA, the rules are essentially the same as those for a traditional IRA. Distributions are taxed as ordinary income and cannot be taken before the age of 59 ½ without incurring a 10% federal income tax penalty, except in the case of extenuating circumstances. For example, penaltyfree distributions may be allowed if an individual is unemployed, buying a first-time home ($10,000
lifetime max), or cannot pay medical expenses. SEP IRA account owners must begin taking minimum distributions after reaching age 70 ½. As a selfemployed grooming business owner, a SEP IRA may be a good option for you, because contributions may be tax deductible and this type of plan is easy to establish and administer. If you are an employee of a company that offers a SEP IRA, you can benefit from the potential to receive employer-paid contributions. So what do you do first? Depending on the level and complexity of your retirement income needs, you should have a financial advisor help you with the following: Develop a budget for everyday expenses, provide multiple models for retirement spending patterns using a variety of analysis
strategies, propose solutions to help overcome projected shortfalls, and most important – create a full financial plan, which will address taxes, inflation, projected growth of assets, your individual risk tolerance and time horizon. With access to comprehensive platform of investment solutions, a financial advisor can help you bolster your portfolio to create a sustainable income stream from your savings. ✂ Established in 1832, Janney Montgomery Scott LLC provides comprehensive financial advice and superior service to individual, corporate and institutional investors. LIFE LESSONS OF
PET GROOMING E by Ellen Ehrlich e
W
hen I attended grooming school, I was taught how to give a bath and fluff dry. I learned how to pluck and clean ears, clip nails, and give haircuts to the dogs or kitties on my grooming table. With time, I have learned that these are not the only tasks that are a part of our profession; there is an emotional and spiritual connection that comes with being a pet stylist. This connection cannot be avoided. It is obvious that the creature on our table has a heartbeat and soul, and most are loved and cherished by their owner. These individuals come

to us, not just to make their furry friend clean and cute, but because pet groomers are caretakers. Caretakers care. The word is defined as “a person employed to look after people or animals.” This is what we do. Effective caretaking is best when done with an emotional and spiritual connection. In most situations our work can be symbolized by a triangle; composed of the groomer, the owner, and the pet. With each visit, the connections grow stronger. This was the unwritten chapter of my education I learned on my own - the hard way. It all began with Betty back in the early days of my mobile grooming

business. Betty’s adult daughter, who volunteered at a shelter, came upon Rocky, a Lhasa Apso. She thought he would be the perfect companion for her elderly mother, who lived alone. Over the next two years, I saw Betty and Rocky every six weeks like clockwork. With each passing visit, we shared more laughs about Rocky and his antics. He had his Mom wrapped around his paw. How I looked forward to this appointment! Every time I arrived at her home I had a big smile on my face. One day, Betty was not feeling well. The next visit, she had a caretaker. At the following appointment, when I brought Rocky

into her house, Betty was sitting in a wheelchair and did not recognize me. When I returned to my grooming van, I broke down in tears. I knew I would never see her again and I didn’t. Ten years later, I still think of her. Every time I drive past her street, the memories come flooding back. I will never forget Betty and Rocky. How many times have you read on social media the heartbreak of a groomer losing a beloved pet client? As soon as a comment is posted everyone commiserates. There is not one groomer I know that has not been touched by this. We take dogs and cats through their lifespan, from puppies and kittens through middle age to the final stages of life. Caring for elderly pets, especially those with serious and life threatening conditions, is truly a privilege. As sad as it sounds, this is one of my greatest pleasures and
accomplishments. As I looked into the eyes of my new client, Petey the beagle, I knew something was wrong. The owner had mentioned they had an appointment with the veterinarian to have the swelling on the bridge of his nose checked. I had a feeling the news was not going to be good. I was right; it was cancer. As Petey became ill it was so difficult. This was my first experience with terminal illness. It broke my heart to see him, but I returned monthly to bathe and groom that sweetie with tender, loving care. I kissed the top of his head and massaged his ears as I talked softly to him. We shared very special oneon-one cherished time, important to his well being, as he entered the final stages of his life. This provided a tremendous amount of comfort for his loving owner who only wanted the
very best for Petey. Volunteering outside of pet styling can be equally traumatic. Groomers are often “first responders” for shut down puppy mills and hoarders; they see a lot of horrific situations, up close and personal. Talk about heartbreak! Some of these situations can give you nightmares. Groomers put those feelings into a little box, roll up their sleeves, and get to work. They know they can make a difference one pet at a time and they do. Oftentimes, groomers can sense the pet’s gratitude. If they could only speak! The dog or kitty would say, “Thank you for helping me feel better.“ Homeless pets, shelter dogs and cats are often matted to the bone. It is very difficult to see animals in such poor condition. Who steps up and comes to their rescue? Groomers! They know that the probability of

the pet being adopted will increase dramatically if they are clean, cute, and cuddly. No matter how distressing it is, groomers can see past the greasy ears, long nails, and dirty hair. With loving care, they help these furry friends find a forever home. I have learned many valuable life lessons though grooming. It has shown me how to connect with and support my clients and their pets through good and bad times. I consulted groomers on the Internet, interested in knowing how other pet stylists feel about this topic. It has made Victoria Gabay more patient, Sherri Wilson more kind, and Lori Bowman more compassionate. Kayla Swisher sees every situation as an opportunity and a challenge to grow as a groomer and a person. Felicia Moran states,
Volunteering outside of pet styling can be equally traumatic. Groomers are often “first responders” for shut down puppy mills and hoarders; they see a lot of horrific situations, up close and personal. “The more you are willing to put into it, the more satisfaction and opportunities you will have.” Samantha Agner feels grooming is all about heart and passion. For Linda Wilson grooming it is a gift. I have always felt that pet grooming has helped me become a better person. When I attended grooming school I thought pet grooming was about a haircut and a bath; I could not have been more wrong. Grooming is all

BREAD & BUTTER GROOMING:
FAST & EASY PET TRIMS FOR THE SALON by Kathy Rose

t is truly aw inspiring to watch successful contest groomers as they apply their artistry and skills, sculpting show quality dogs into fine works of art. There is always something to learn and we even try emulating these skills on the pets that we groom in our salons. The reality, however, is that the vast majority of our Bread & Butter pets vaguely resemble their breed standard counterparts. Even if these pets once traveled in high circles, a day comes when their owner wants a short, easy, no frills trim on their beloved pet. For this segment, our model is an aging, overweight Maltese. Usual preparation work is completed ahead; bath, blow out and brush along with ear cleaning, nail trimming, and trimming of pads and sanitary.

If the tick looks flat, it has probably attached recently. If the tick is engorged, it may mean that it has been feeding for an extended time. The longer a tick has been feeding on your pet (or you) before being discovered, the greater chance that it will transfer disease. In many cases a ‘bullseye rash’ will appear at the site of a tick bite.
Once the tick has been removed, place it in a sealed container or a small sealable plastic bag. You can add a squirt of tick spray to kill it, or simply seal the bag or container and place it in the trash. Ticks need humidity to survive and will perish without it. Do not flush ticks down the toilet. They can survive in the water.
