series he calls “Typefaces,” (featured artwork) which is about sampling and remixing visual cues we use in everyday life to process identity; these cues include faces, typography, fashion and architecture. This approach emerged during several studio sessions and has been a vast source for examination of social and cultural hybridity. Sam defines this featured artwork as “cultural landscape” paintings, which are observations of people, and their distinctive features and surrounding environments.

David’s work is basically a journal of his life and a way for him to express things visually that are hard to put into words. His style tends to vary depending on how he feel towards the subject of the painting at that time. Most of his figurative works have the subject placed in an environment that says something about who that person is, as well as what they mean to him. David’s still life and more abstracted works say more about himself, and either aim to portray emotions or say something about his mental state at the time.

An Artists Serving Artists interview

Daniel J. Valadez Assistant Manager Blick Art Materials – Oakland, CA

Daniel J. Valadez is the assistant manager at Blick’s Oakland store. Primarily a portrait artist, Daniel finds wonder and magic in the experience of painting someone’s portrait, and he’s fascinated by how his subjects wear their environments and share their unique stories. Princeton brushes and Rembrandt paints help bring those stories to life.

How about inspiration? My work is a controlled, chaotic mesh teetering between the worlds of abstraction and realism. My hope is to create a marriage between the two worlds. My body of work is inspired by my move from San Jose, California, to San Francisco. Not knowing a single person in a city that was bigger than home and noting how many people were out on the streets, blending in with the environment became an apparent focus in my art. Another observation was how graffiti blanketed the city in so many different areas; this fueled a passion to interweave my love for graffiti and my observation of people into the amalgamation of a classical and semi-abstract painting style.

Talk about process. My work is layered in process; it starts out with photographing my subject matter. When I find a subject, I’m looking for that vulnerability of them not being aware that I’m there. I want to capture you in your moment. Whether you’re thinking about your loved one, an argument that you’ve had … I want to capture you at your most vulnerable state mentally, which reflects how you interact with your environment; that’s what I’m looking for, what I take home and study, and live with and build a relationship with. I build that up with paint, with study and with love; and then I’ll tear it down and I’ll lose it, and I’ll try to find my way back. There’s a little bit of fun, a little bit of abstract, that chaos that’s in there; and then there’s the focus, there’s what I want you to see.

36

How do you promote your work and take that leap? The world is changing pretty fast. The challenge is, how am I going to show what I do to the rest of the world … fast, because it’s moving fast. I use social media like a doorway to reach the farthest corners of the states or the world. You have to show people that you’re constantly working, you’re hustling, you’re producing work and you’re offering value. You have to be consistent and you have to show growth. You have to know what you love to do, and what you love about art or about taking that leap. You have to be sure. You have to be confident in yourself, and listen to what you’re saying and not the people around you. You only have one bat at life — you can either live with regret down the road or just do it.

More about Daniel. Daniel J. Valadez was born in Santa Clara, California. He grew up in Visalia, central California, where the summers were scorching and the winters left the grass frozen. He made his return years later to the Bay Area. Daniel moved to San Francisco in the spring of 2005 and began studying at the Academy of Art University. After a rigorous three years, in 2008 he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in illustration. The years that followed his schooling, Daniel continuously pursued a career in painting, and continues to show and sell his work all around the world. About Artists Serving Artists. The common thread in all of these is Jason’s ability to craft a visual story, then compose and light it in a cinematic style. “Dream Awake” (featured photoset) explores a sense of a being who was emerging, pushed from one reality to another, traveling through a between state on their way to complete a metamorphosis. These explorations incorporate practical and digital enhancements of smoke and digital painting to further blur the sense of reality.

BEAU B. FRANK BEAU B. FRANK BEAU B. FRANK BEAU B. FRANK BEAU B. FRANK BEAU B. FRANK Beau loves capturing a feeling, whether it be in the form of a gaze or an expression in nature. The “Off the Grid” collection (featured artwork) of juxtaposing portraits with landscapes is a way for him to paint a deep sense of disconnectedness from the now, inflicted by a longing for travel, exploration and adventure. What these black and white portraits seek is to return to that colorful place that has been

carefully painted within the confines of their face — intertwined with their identity like a mask or a window into their thought process; the overwhelming nostalgia of better days past or perhaps the hope for even better ones to come. Beau hopes to convey a feeling of wanderlust, all while staying true to his taste for simplicity, sophisticated style, limitless traveling and creative thinking.

“Messy” is not just an adjective she uses to describe her process, it’s a lifestyle; it’s about embracing all of the fuck ups, mourning the lost and misplaced, and bumps and bruises, and making it into something … kind of pretty. “Messy” is the chaotic scrambling to get her ideas out before she forgets them — turning accidents into intention, gracelessness into beauty; accepting that there is no right way to create or to be.

Rachel “Messy” Beck’s current work is largely influenced by her current infatuation with boobs. “The female form holds so much value in our society, but is so simply deconstructed into a series of lines and shapes. At this point, it takes on a new form of objectification and consumption.” She plans for her work to become increasingly sculptural as she begins to objectify men as well.

In Chad’s current body of work, he molds his resourceful street art background with his fine art influences. His nonobjective paintings rely on forms and colors as they relate to one another and create a single shape. Chad takes his concerns for painting something that lasts in the outdoors and applies the same techniques when approaching a canvas. He uses latex paint and oversized brush strokes to ensure these paintings, like his murals, will surpass the test of time.

Although he was born and raised in Honolulu, Chad became enthralled with graffiti and the art of the Mission School. In 2000, he moved to San Francisco and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in advertising from the Academy of Art University. He worked for top agencies, including Venables Bell & Partners and Goodby Silverstein & Partners, before leaving advertising to concentrate on painting murals on the streets, as well as canvases for both commercial and nonprofit gallery shows. Chad quickly gained recognition for his bold and colorful latex paint brush strokes that pushed the boundaries of public art.

Heather travels seeking stories of all kinds — stories behind people, places, sound and nature — and brings them home to her San Francisco studio to create an interpretation. Working primarily with paint and nontraditional materials, her recent work is a reflection of travels in nature. Heather spends time collecting moments from wooded areas, agitated rivers and panoramic views of the ocean, and conveys them through medium washes and emphatic marks. She uses color like punctuation, as a means to control the energy and direct the eye. Her process demands motion, requiring the entire body, not just the hand. Heather pours and manipulates paint into its own current using a range of motions. Each of her paintings ultimately seeks to balance the progression of growth and upkeep found in both nature and the act of painting.

Jeremiah’s work is both inspired by and investigative of finality. Exploring themes of nature and coexistence, he employs a multitude of stylistic approaches, which range from loosely abstracted to highly rendered objects; these differing image styles are generally coexisting in a single piece, thus creating a juxtaposition of reality and surrealism. Jeremiah is best known for his narrative work that depicts themes of disenfranchised circus elephants, yet this is only a portion of his already developed, and collected, body of work. Chadwick transforms the benign into baroque works of energy through his paintings, drawings and sculpture. He often cites the Pacific Garbage Patch, where plastic floating in the ocean enters our food chain, as the impetus for many of his pieces. Taking unassuming trash heaps, Chadwick turns them into sculptures with accents of color and deception, describing them as three-dimensional, abstract expressionism paintings. He is interested in exploring the interconnection between what we buy for everyday use and who we are as human beings. Chadwick’s paintings and drawings begin as photos that he takes on his walks around the city of discarded objects, peculiar spills or swirls of pigeons feeding off fast food wrappers, ultimately forming a stormy vortex, which tell a story of modern day consumerism and its ramifications. He has shown in the Bay Area and New York. Chadwick holds a Master of Fine Arts in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute and currently resides in San Francisco.

CCTV creates for the experience and memories, and motivates himself to paint huge paintings on deserted walls almost as an experiment. He finds it fun to figure out how he’s going to pull off such huge projects with his very limited assets, and saying, “It’s not always obvious knowing how to paint a 40-foot high painting in a hard to access location in a matter of hours so that no one else sees you do it.” CCTV has built a set of tools that he invented, which help him paint such big pieces. He often has to customize his tools for every piece he paints. CCTV paints huge human and skeleton figures, with a security camera instead of a head, that he calls CCTV. He was

somewhat inspired by George Orwell’s novel, “1984,” where he depicts a state of complete surveillance and control by a higher power he calls Big Brother. His CCTV characters are almost like Big Brother escapees — characters who have been brainwashed and let loose into an environment without any structure. CCTV has since created new characters that he calls Smileys; they often have round smiling faces that spell out CCTV (a C for each eye, a T for the eyebrow and nose, and a V for the smiling mouth). He hasn’t quite decided why he paints and puts so much artwork in the outside environment, but he’s sure more will come.

She is studying online to be a web developer; and in her free time she plays drums in a new local band called Milk, runs her small Etsy and Depop stores called “Nothing is Funny,” and animates bricks of clay into colorful, goofy GIFs,

drawing inspiration from strange dreams and peculiar objects. The usual setup of her “claytoon studio” is an iPhone on a tripod wrapped around a wine bottle and duct taped to the table. Lucya is looking forward to working on a more serious project in the future, and to creating a longer claytoon or music video.

Currently, Paula has two practices — creating geometric, abstract paintings and creating unique, handmade snapback caps. In her paintings, she is interested in the simplicity of a single geometric shape and the complexity that can be created through the combination of many simple structures. This oppositional relationship between simple and complex is at the core of her work. Paula’s goal is to create a composition for a view that feels both

simple, graphic and flat, while also complex, painterly and deep. “The hybridization of these opposing characteristics creates an experience that is not easily digested at one glance. Layers of discovery are created as the viewer experiences the precise and systematic, while also the chaotic and expressionistic.” Her hats are wearable art. Each hat is one of a kind and handmade from secondhand fabrics.

Robert eats far too much chocolate and drinks too many lattes; consumes far too much alcohol for inspiration; and managed to obtain a fungus — all with the intention of becoming a creative.
