Bernard Mc Cauley Group Managing Director

Mary talks about the performance review challenge.

Mary Horgan, HR Director

With June here (or what passes for summer on these islands), this means we have already completed the first quarter of the business year. This was also the period when we asked all our managers and supervisors to spend time reviewing your own performance and that of the people who work on your team. Some people dread the idea of the performance review. And it does not seem to matter whether you are the manager, the supervisor or the team member. Somehow the very mention of performance appraisal fills people with dread.

My question then is: have you spent the time to sit down with your boss and with your team members to discuss your work performance? My guess is that some people will read this and say: “Oh but I was so busy and we postponed the appraisal meeting but we will get around to it”. And yet what could be more important or natural? Surely all of us want to know how we are doing? Maybe some of us conjure up images of TV programmes like ‘The X Factor’ or ‘Britain’s got Talent’ and we think “that was a bit harsh!” or “poor guy, he really was awful” or “ what a woeful performance that was”. Or we think,” I don’t want to crush the guy by telling him he was bad!”. In fact I think at work we spend a lot of time avoiding anything that might seem vaguely unpleasant. But of course by performance appraisal avoidance, we also miss out on the opportunity for acknowledgement and coaching too. At work, we somehow hate the idea of being the judge or the contestant! We think of our own review and we tell ourselves: “I don’t need my boss behaving like Simon Cowell and telling me I was awful!” Then on the other hand everyone loves some praise and recognition for a job well done and sometimes the only opportunity people get to hear that is at the performance review. That should not be the case, of course, as we should all ensure we are giving out feedback and review on an ongoing basis. Okay then, so your boss is no Simon Cowell or Sharon Osborne! And maybe you are no Sam Bailey or your team is not going to reach global fame like One Direction, but you come to work every day and you do a good job. You want to see your work recognised and an opportunity to talk about your own development and your career and your aspirations. You should then welcome the opportunity to discuss your performance in a quiet session confidentially with your boss. And if you are the manager or supervisor, make sure you prioritise this important time to talk to your team member.

To prepare for your appraisal, you could use the little coaching model called GROW: GOALS – agree what goals you want to achieve? How much influence do I have on my goals? What can I gain or lose if I were to attain my goals? REALITY - what is happening now? What are the barriers? What have you tried already? OPTIONS - what could you do? What are you going to do? How will I overcome barriers? WHAT / WILL – what are you going to do? When are you going to do it? What support do you need? This little model works well for reviewing any part of your life not just your work performance and if you are prepared, your time talking to your boss or your team member will be very fruitful. With so much of our time taken up with work, it makes sense that we should want to ensure we are making the very most of it. Steve Jobs once said: “Don’t live your life living someone else’s life!”

Be true to yourself, do a little preparation and make the most of that performance appraisal! If your boss is the one delaying the moment, make sure you ask for that time. It is your opportunity and most people find it is more pleasant than they expected!

P&G HRSS Move A day in the life of P&G, a long day mind!

We moved HRSS (Human Resources Services and Solutions) from 2nd floor C12A to ground floor C12 on 6th June. This was a 28 person move. We all needed to make sure the office was ready so they could move. This is part and parcel of our job here. This comprised of making sure each desk had a live-Land line. We cabled up each desk for this. Storage units were specifically provided to ensure the safe and secure movement of their belongings, furniture and documents. The storage units were switched around to suit their needs. All of the team, cleaners and porters, supported in the office move, the success being that P&G co-workers are ready for the next date of work. A great deal of planning and preparation was put in place to support this P&G move and enable staff to move to the new building without undue stress. An external company provided the main move from one building to the next as we directed them from and to the correct location. This is one of 483 individual moves scheduled from February to September 2015 relating to the two buildings pictured. Keith Irving AV/Facilities, Grosvenor FM

Well Done to... Jean Fowkes, supervisor at Debenhams Derby. Jean was awarded Debenhams Employee of the month for her commitment and hard work in ensuring that the store cleaning standards were of a super standard for the recent model store judging. It’s always gratifying when a member of the Grosvenor team is rewarded in this way and I feel that it shows the excellent working relationships our teams have with Debenhams management.

This certificate was awarded to Bicester Village by the BPA following an onsite visit with the BPA and Thames Valley Police. 3 days in the life of This article was written by Melissa, who worked with the Grosvenor Cleaning team on a 3 day trial in IKEA Croydon. Melissa works with our supplier RJN Chemicals and opted to take part in this trial to get an insight and gain some invaluable experience for RJN. Day One Upon entering the site I was very much in awe of the task at hand for Elsie and her team. I am no stranger to Ikea, but I have never seen the store look so big and I wondered how the cleaning operatives could handle such a challenge. I also wondered how on earth they managed not to get lost! Elsie seemed to move around the site with ease, navigating through what looked to me like random passage ways leading through the store. At a first glance it was clear the lengths the team go to in order to keep the store looking pristine; even following the weekend rush it seemed to be holding up well. It then became very apparent to me how and why this all works. Elsie! This is quite an operation that she has running here. The time slots, the management of the staff and the various different areas of the store, and she does it all with a smile on her face and a laugh so infectious you can't help but instantly warm to her. It's so obvious that she has an experienced team behind her, with everyone strategically placed work commences at 6am. As Elsie guided me through the store I very much admired the relationship she has with her staff. She knew what was supposed to be going on and where, and yet it was clear that her staff still found her friendly and approachable. Elsie and I discussed an audit that had recently taken place, and it was very apparent that a lot of time, effort and care had gone into making sure the store was at its best. Elsie raved about the support she had gotten from her team, it's clear that they really do take pride in what they are doing as a team. Walking around the store for a few hours and getting to grips with the different areas I can very much appreciate the amount of work it must have taken to prepare for that audit. I was lucky enough to get a full tour of the store from the eyes of the Grosvenor workers. Dipping in and out of the various doors we arrived at the restaurant kitchens. I had no idea that their work extended to these areas of the store! As soon as you walked in you could feel the heat and see the mass of duties that awaited the pot wash team. But sure enough a lady appeared, with a smile on her face ready for the day ahead. Elsie informed me that she was no less than 75 years of age, and stronger than most. I was astonished! I mean the heat alone would have overcome some, but what really brought it home for me was how physically demanding these roles can be. Ikea is such a huge site being on your feet and walking around the site can be enough, let alone the duties of the roles themselves. With my tour and induction complete, I was left to ponder what lay in store for me on day two. Day Two It was all hands on deck today as Elsie explained that they were two people down; she was having to perform quite a juggling act. As we all know the same standard of cleaning still needed to be upheld, but they had less bodies! How would it work? Well luckily they had an extra pair of hands in site. Now I can’t say that it was like for like cover, as they had unknowingly recruited a very inexperienced member. However what I lacked in experience I more than made up for with enthusiasm and team spirit! Ready and raring to pitch in my first task was the pesky carpet. As a customer it is something that I had passed many a time, something I had never even noticed, but I was definitely seeing it now! It may seem like a simple enough job, after all I have been hovering at home for many years! I don’t however have to contend with such a high number of people crossing my doorway on a daily basis. The carpet of course is heavy duty, as it would need to be; thus making it even harder to clean! Trying to contend with the chewing gum, which had almost become one with the carpet; and the various other foreign entities that had decided to imbed themselves within!

Already I felt that I was letting the side down. Why on earth was a task that would have taken me five minutes at home taking me so long? Elsie did explain that the lady who normal performs this task struggles with it on a daily basis. I felt a little better; however I was still not satisfied. There is nothing worse than putting time and effort into a task and feeling like the results just aren’t up to standard. I ploughed on! I was never one to shy away from a challenge and I didn’t intend on being defeated now. “Carpet down” I said, “what the next job”? I was moved on to my next job, which is how I have now come to refer to Ikea as ‘the land of a thousand mirrors’. Mirrors, mirrors everywhere! Every corner you turn, then there’s the wardrobes and let’s not forget the bedroom section. Along with the mirrors of course are the lovely handprints of inquisitive customers, big and small. It dawned on me by about fifteenth mirror, that cleaning Ikea is like cleaning dozens of houses from top to bottom, and that doesn’t even included other areas such as the canteen, restrooms and warehouse! Such a monumental job, I was still stunned at the fact that Elsie and her team manage to do what they do. Day Three My final day on site, and I had a new found sense of respect and admiration for the work the team do here and how they do it. We were back to being fully staffed, so that relieved some pressure off of the team. Elsie and I reflected again on the audit that had recently taken place, and she explained how supportive her team had been, offering to stay later, help cover other areas and how they had really pulled together to get the result. The fact that she has been able to build this kind of relationship with her staff I found really commendable. The task at hand here is so huge and it would be easy to buckle under the pressure and in turn take it out on one another, but you could feel the real sense of team here. I asked Elsie if she had found it easy to foster this relationship with her team and she remarked that it was all about respect, saying that “If you respect and value your members, you will get the best out of them”. Something else Elsie had said really stuck with me, “if you work from the heart you will get the results”. Elsie explained that she had said this to her members, and you could tell! You could see it in every single one of them. This is a site that is dependent on the support and strength of the team, if one person under performs this will undoubtedly have an effect on the rest. Elsie also touched upon the support she receives from the management team, both at Grosvenor and Ikea. It made me so happy to hear that the team are so well supported and appreciated by their employers and the client, as having seen what they do first hand I had nothing but respect for them all. I have come away from this experience looking at this site so differently! As I said before I am definitely no stranger to Ikea, but now seeing the work that goes into getting it to look how it does, I can’t help but see it in a new light! I would like to thank Elsie and her team, for being so welcoming and allowing me to be part of their world for a few days, I would also like to thank Grosvenor for giving me this amazing eye opening opportunity. Its PICNIC TIME…. So here's a couple of picnic treats certain to impress…

Chest of Sandwiches This is the ultimate picnic recipe. You slice and open the top of a loaf of bread, like a treasure chest, then cut the inside out, slice the inside piece and make layers of sandwiches, then refill the 'chest' crust of the loaf with all the sandwiches, close the lid, and, hey presto: you will dazzle everyone with your picnic prowess! To make the chest of sandwiches, you need to cut a 'brick' of bread from the inside of the loaf. When you're finished, you'll be left with a rectangular 'brick' of crustless bread (with which you can make the sandwiches) and a hollowed-out loaf (the chest). First, you'll need to cut the bottom of the loaf away from the crust. To do this, insert a bread knife into one long side of the loaf, just above the base. Push the knife through the bread, but don't allow the knife to pierce the crust on the far side. Without making the cut through where the knife was inserted any bigger, work the knife, in an arc shape, inside the loaf, then pull the knife out. Next, make the lid of the chest by cutting through one of the top long sides of the loaf and both short sides - leave one long side uncut to act as a hinge. When you open the lid, if it looks to be in danger of falling off, keep it propped up from behind with a couple of jars or something similar. Finally, with the lid open, cut the bread away from the four sides, just inside the crust, cutting down to within 1cm (about ½in) of the bottom crust. Carefully ease the 'brick' of bread out - it should leave an empty chest behind. Cut this 'brick' of bread into four long horizontal slices, and make two long sandwiches using the softened butter and the fillings of your choice. Cut each long sandwich into 4 or 5 smaller sandwiches, press them together firmly, then put them back into the chest. Close the top of the chest with the lid and wrap the chest in cling film - don't worry if it gapes slightly, this is because of the extra bulk of the sandwich fillings. The sandwiches will keep well like this throughout the day, as long as there's nothing soggy, such as tomato, in them.
