FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Each season it is my joy to welcome you to Grounds For Sculpture and its tremendously diverse and growing cultural offerings. And each time it is with great pride that we offer you something big and bold and entirely new. This spring it is our new East Gallery in the Seward Johnson Center for the Arts, over 7,500 square feet of exhibition, performance, and rental space, which we will open with Canutopia featuring the fantastical flora inspired creations of the incomparable Ming Fay. Of course GFS in spring is spectacularly beautiful too, and our guide will point you toward our most captivating floral displays no matter when you make your visit. So both inside or out, nature and art abound at GFS and beckon you to come, bask, delight, and return often….for each time you’re sure to find something new.

ABOUT GROUNDS FOR SCULPTURE Nestled in the heart of central New Jersey lies Grounds For Sculpture (GFS), a magical place where art and nature are always at play. At its core are more than 270 sculptures by renowned and emerging contemporary artists, each thoughtfully positioned on meticulously landscaped parklands full of thousands of exotic trees and flowers. It is a feast for the senses. The works, many of them monumental, include those of such distinguished artists as Clement Meadmore, Anthony Caro, Beverly Pepper, Kiki Smith, George Segal, Magdalena Abakanowicz, and Isaac Witkin. They join the enchanting works of our visionary founder Seward Johnson as well as many others by the finest up and coming artists of our time. Join us and discover the beauty, charm, whimsy, and inspiration that our 42 acres hold. The collection and exhibits at Grounds For Sculpture contain art works that may be of a challenging, sensitive and/or mature nature. Please be aware and consult GFS staff for advice if you have specific concerns. ACCESSIBILITY Grounds For Sculpture is a leader in designing its facilities and programs to serve persons with disabilities. The Domestic Arts Building is fully accessible as is the Visitor’s Center and the Seward Johnson Center for the Arts. The Museum Building, fully accessible on the first floor, has a specially designed digital slideshow featuring artwork on its mezzanine level. Large print editions of information and brochures are available in all three buildings. Special vehicles are available to assist persons who have mobility impairments with two weeks advance notice. Touch tours for the visually impaired may be arranged with advance reservations.

The Grand Opening Exhibition of the New East Gallery

Ming Fay Canutopia

Opens Saturday, May 5, 2012 Runs through February 2013 Presenting as the grand opening exhibition in our new 10,000 square foot gallery space, the lush and colorful work of Ming Fay. Chineseborn, this extraordinarily playful artist has, over the span of six weeks, created an extravagant and exotic garden environment – a one-of-a-kind botanical utopia filled with fantastic oversized plants, seeds and vines that burst with colors you can almost taste. My sculpture comments on the botanical world and its relationship to humans, ranging from oversized plant forms to complex overgrown environments reminiscent of science fiction films…In recent years, my work has focused on the concept of a garden as a symbol of abundance, paradise and the location for the ultimate desirable state of being. EDUCATION GALLERY FOCUS ON SCULPTURE January 21–April 15, 2012 Opening Reception: January 21, 4–6pm This year our annual show of works featuring sculpture as subject by some of the area’s most talented amateur photographers is juried by the distinguished fine art photographer Frank DiGiovanni. THE IMPACT OF ART: EXPRESSIONS FROM THE PCIL WRITER’S BLOCK CREATIVE GROUP May 6–June 6, 2012 NJ’s Progressive Center for Independent Living advocates for people with disabilities. In 2010, it launched a program through which disabled persons express themselves through art. This exhibition offers probing insight into their unique perspective on their world and ours.

Grounds For Sculpture conducts over 500 docent-led tours annually. Free dropin tours are provided based on docent availability, spring thru fall. Tours feature works outdoors and may include exhibitions in the East Gallery and Museum. Please check our website for the schedule. MONOTYPES AW Saturday, March 3, 10am–3pm In monotype printmaking, artists use paints, pencils, or other media to create an image on a smooth non-absorbent surface, such as glass, and then transfer it to paper by placing it on a painted surface and applying pressure. Although multiple prints are possible, each is unique as the layers of paint are gradually removed from the surface. All materials will be provided and students will have their works printed with the instructor’s hand pin press. Take part in this workshop and leave with several original monoprints! JAZZ FUSION FEST Thursdays: April 5, 12, and 19, 6–9pm. All tickets $12 Visit Grounds For Sculpture three Thursday nights in April for Jazz Fusion Fest, a musical experience like no other. Since its early days, when Miles Davis first blended jazz improvisation with the energy of electric rock, fusion has drawn audiences from across the musical spectrum. In Fusion Fest, devoted area bands pay homage to fusion pioneers like Chic Corea, John McLaughlin, and Weather Report and add their own interpretation as well. INSPIRED BY DUNBAR: AW STEEL SCULPTURES Saturday, April 14, 10am–4pm Michael Dunbar’s mechanical and geometric metal sculptures will inspire this unique hands-on workshop. Participants will design and fabricate small-scale steel sculptures based on his work. Using pre-cut steel components, students will create a mock-up and then work closely with Artist-in-the-Park, Bruce Lindsay, as he cuts and welds metal components for them. Free with park admission Bring the whole family to celebrate our down home roots as the site of the New Jersey State Fairgrounds as we turn the park into a fun-filled fantasy fair! PETER YARROW IN CONCERT Friday, April 27, 8pm The artistry of the legendary Peter Yarrow—both with Peter, Paul & Mary and as a solo performer— so often uses music to deliver a powerful message of humanity and caring. His special gifts have produced such moving songs as Puff, the Magic Dragon, Blowin’ in the Wind, and If I Had a Hammer, and have earned him numerous GRAMMYs and sold millions of albums. In concert, Peter weaves a narrative of his life in music and politics, illuminated by the iconic songs we all know and love. CREATIVE EXPLORATIONS AW PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP Saturdays: April 21 and 28, 10am–4pm Indulge your passion in this intensive two session workshop for novice and intermediate photographers. Begin by discussing basic elements of photography: subject, composition, exposure, and perspective. Then head outdoors to put ideas into action inspired by GFS in springtime. Finish up by critiquing and editing your day’s captures. Participants must bring their own digital SLR camera and tripod and have a basic knowledge of their camera’s settings. Participants may bring a laptop for viewing and editing work. In partnership with Visions Photographic Workshops. Instructor: Michael S. INSPIRED BY TOBIN: FW SCULPTING WITH NATURE WORKSHOP FOR KIDS Saturday, April 28, 1-4pm After examining the phenomenal Steelroots of Steve Tobin, featured in The GFS Meadow, and what inspires him, our youthful participants will create their own interpretations of his work by building natural objects into free-flowing sculptures. Until they begin, even they don’t know exactly which poems they’ll read. Like jazz musicians, they start with a theme and then riff on it to make each reading unique - at turns playful, critical, joyous, or elegiac- altogether an epic, organic, poetic experience in which the audience shares the risk and surprise. Based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale The Princess and The Pea and made famous on Broadway by Carol Burnett as the princess – Once Upon a Mattress is a hilarious musical about a brash and unrefined princess who has to prove her sensitivity in order to marry the prince. WATERCOLOR TECHNIQUES FOR PAINTING GROUNDS FOR AW SCULPTURE’S LANDSCAPES Saturdays: June, 9, 16, 23 and 30, 10am–1pm Great for both beginners and intermediate painters. Topics include painting sky, water, trees, and foliage, and creating the texture of grass and rocks. Beginners will learn basics from de-coding your paint tube to mixing colors. More experienced students will refine their skills by learning techniques such as spattering, scraping, spritzing, and sponging as demonstrated by the instructor who will use GFS as a subject.
