GFs ULTIMATE MAKEOVER This season, Grounds For Sculpture will be getting a facelift! You will notice during your visit that some areas may be temporarily under construction. This means you may have to travel off the beaten path—you never know what surprises await! Our water garden will look younger and brighter than ever, and our buildings will return to their former Fairgrounds glory with brand-new stucco finishes. We’re also redoing many of our pathways to make them even more accessible for our guests, especially those with mobility challenges. ABOUT GROUNDS FOR SCULPTURE Nestled in the heart of central New Jersey lies Grounds For Sculpture (GFS), a magical place where art and nature are always at play. At its core are more than 270 sculptures by renowned and emerging contemporary artists, each thoughtfully positioned on meticulously landscaped parkland full of thousands of exotic trees and flowers. It is a feast for the senses. The works, many of them monumental, include those of such distinguished artists as Clement Meadmore, Anthony Caro, Beverly Pepper, Kiki Smith, George Segal, Magdalena Abakanowicz, and Isaac Witkin. They join the enchanting works of our visionary founder Seward Johnson as well as many others by the finest up and coming artists of our time. JO YARRINGTON The Leap

Through October 6 Past and present blur in this new large-scale work created specifically for GFS. Translucent photographic images related to the New Jersey Fairgrounds (located here for over a century) cover the huge windows at one end of the building, creating a magnificent interplay between our history and our current landscape. Viewers become part of the work as they are caught in the perpetually shifting, mesmerizing images ignited by sunlight. Yarrington has exhibited her work throughout the U.S. as well as in Mexico, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, Italy, and Iceland and is the recipient of many grants, fellowships, and commissions. JASON PETERS Less Than <> More Than

Through October 6 In this spectacular large-scale environmental sculpture from Jason Peters, the original purpose of commonly manufactured materials is nearly obscured, seemingly defying gravity and multiplying through some bizarre organic force. Metal chair frames twisted with colorful fluorescent tubes provide delightful surprise encounters that challenge our perceptions and expectations. Peters has had solo and group exhibitions and prestigious artist residencies across the U.S. In 2008, he was invited by The Pulitzer Foundation, in collaboration with the St. Louis Contemporary Art Museum, to create a monumental outdoor sculpture for the Community Light Project. Don’t miss Jason Peters’ lecture on gravity-defying art on July 27 at 1pm.

WILLIAM KNIGHT Out of Context

Opening October 19 William Knight uses the shreds of blown tires that he finds along New Jersey highways to create his extraordinary sculptures. In his studio, he studies these remnants to find the aesthetic possibilities of their shapes, tears, and curves, until eventually the composition is resolved. His works vary greatly in effect – from lyrical and melodic to audacious and exuberant – and gently turn with the air currents. All of Knight’s sculptures produce remarkable shadows on the walls and floors to add a fourth dimension, an aspect of time and change.

EDWINA SANDYS Provocative and Profound

Opening October 19 Edwina Sandys began as a writer and started creating visual art in her early thirties – first painting and then sculpture. Sandys aim is to catch a viewer’s attention immediately with the visual power of her work and then again with the underlying theme. Her content is approached with deep consideration and brilliant wit. She fearlessly confronts issues from a female perspective. Sometimes her work is humorous or celebratory, at other times, it is piercing and grievous. She also unashamedly explores imagery that is erotic and sensuous, masterfully spanning the line between literal representation and an imagined reality. Don’t miss Edwina Sandys’ lecture on gracefully pushing artistic boundaries on November 23 at 1pm.

Plus, as a tantalizing peek into next year, Grounds For Sculpture will be mounting the largest and most spectacular exhibition in its history—a retrospective featuring the life’s work of sculptor and Grounds For Sculpture founder Seward Johnson. Over 100 of his works (including towering 25-foot sculptures) will be on display throughout the galleries and park during this extraordinary exhibition, which opens May 2014. OSORIO DOMESTIC ARTS BUILDING

Through July 14

Meridith Pingree incorporates dreams, plant life, robotics, geometry, and textile design into her quirky, compelling sculptural amalgamations. Her colorful, suspended kinetic sculptures move through space with the aid of small motors in a pattern of slow, jarring movements. Sensors attached to the motors react to the movements and communal energy of people in the room, and the parts begin to move in a frenzied way, mimicking the actions of a living being.

PEPÓN OSORIO Where the Me Becomes We

Through October 6 Inspired by childhood memories in Puerto Rico of assisting his mother in creating intricately decorated cakes, Pepón Osorio layers every-day items – bicycles, furniture, even whole rooms – with excessive ornamentation using shiny, colorful knickknacks, embellished fabrics, printed items, and more. He created a new work for this exhibition about his mother’s glorious cakes. Osorio’s work has been shown worldwide, and he is the recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, a Pew Fellowship, and the Smithsonian Legacy Award. He was featured in the first season of the acclaimed PBS television series Art in the 21st Century, which is available for viewing in the gallery.

Katie Murken’s impressive installation, Continua, takes mathematical underpinnings and combines them with an element of chance. Murken is a book artist who teaches color theory at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. Continua, which took her two years to make, is comprised of 24 tall columns – stacks of recycled, hand-dyed phone books – and each column is made up of 24 colors. The pages of each phone book were dyed and stacked according to a system the artist devised using a color wheel and pair of dice. The saturated color and softened texture of the paper has an immediate sensory appeal, and the columns bring to mind colored bar charts used for comparisons or the sedimentary layers of the Earth’s crust.

JONATHAN SHAHN Heads in Wood and Plaster

Through September 22 Since the early 1960s, NJ artist Jonathan Shahn has explored the human figure through painting, drawing, and sculpture. This season, GFS is exhibiting a selection of Shahn’s human heads, contrasting his work in two materials that illuminate his artistic range. The heads carved from wood have a classical timeless quality, whereas the smaller plaster heads, encased in boxes and lit from above, are wonderfully expressive. Shahn’s work has been widely exhibited in museums and galleries in the U.S. and Europe. He has taught at Tyler School in Rome and at the Art Students League in New York City, among other prestigious institutions.

Lauren Clay explores the fragmented nature of contemporary culture and spiritual identity. With both a BFA and an MFA in painting, her sculpture retains a painter’s approach to space and color. Painting stacks of individual sheets of paper with intricate marbleized designs and beautiful swirling colors, each work is highly intuitive and personal. Without a preconceived plan, she begins to select, cut, overlap, roll, and fold her differently colored pages into a series of beautifully crafted shapes until an internal spatial logic is achieved.

Opening October 5 Always innovative and impressive, this ISC and GFS collaborative exhibition features exceptional work by undergraduate and graduate student artists, recommended by their professors. The competition attracts an international pool of over 400 artworks and is juried by a distinguished panel of art professionals. Come glimpse the future of contemporary sculpture as these extraordinary sculpture students exhibit their award-winning work.

Opening October 5, 2013 Renowned as one of the world’s leading artists in environmental sculpture and design of public spaces, Tacha is perhaps best known for creating places that evoke the grandeur of nature, even in the unlikeliest of urban settings. Working in a variety of media to create sculptures, drawings, photographs, films, and wearable body art, her small sculptures of archetypal canyons, volcanoes, caves, waves, and waterfalls are based on the her lifelong interest in the forms of natural phenomena. Her large-scale photographs of wave and sand patterns offer unexpected fluidity against the constraints of their frames. Don’t miss an intimate Art Salon at Rat’s Restaurant with Athena Tacha on October 17 from 11am – 2pm.

TCNJ ART HONOR SOCIETY EXHIBTION

September 21–November 3, 2013 Explore the connection between art educators and their students in this unique exhibition highlighting works by The College of New Jersey student teachers who are members of the Art Honor Society, Phi Kappa. This exhibition explores how educators’ personal artwork, art-making processes, and beliefs, translate into their teaching practices in local schools.

November 16–December 15, 2013 This exhibition features artwork by the staff of three organizations whose offices are located on the Grounds For Sculpture campus: GFS/Rat’s Restaurant, the International Sculpture Center, and The Sculpture Foundation. Today, Winterthur (pronounced “winter-tour”) is the premier museum of American decorative arts, with an unparalleled collection of nearly 90,000 objects made or used in America between 1640 and 1860. The collection is displayed in the magnificent 175-room house, as well as in permanent and changing exhibition galleries. Grounds For Sculpture members and volunteers will enjoy a garden tram ride around the 60-acre garden followed by a guided tour of the house. Tours feature a sampling of works outdoors to introduce you to the park and equip you for your journey and may also include works on exhibit in our galleries. HIROYA TSUKAMOTO Friday, August 9, 7:30pm One-of-a-kind composer/guitarist/singer-songwriter and Kyoto, Japan native, Hiroya Tsukamoto, started playing the five-string banjo when he was thirteen and took up guitar shortly thereafter. His solo guitar performances possess Japanese and Latin American flair and have been described as contemplative and peaceful. 9th ANNUAL GUILD FOR EARLY MUSIC Sunday, October 13, 12:30–5:30pm Free with park admission The Guild for Early Music features Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and Early American music sung and played by our finest regional ensembles and concludes with a “petting zoo” of historical instruments for you to touch and play. This year’s theme, “Journeys,” features a medieval instrument demo, a youth orchestral prelude, and performances on harpsichord, viola da gamba, recorder, harp, flute, Baroque strings, sackbut, cornetto, percussion, and more, and includes themed “Journeys” sculpture tours of the park. UNSTRUCTURED PAPER SCULPTURES Saturdays, October 19 and 26, 10am–3pm Create your own organically shaped paper sculpture in this unique workshop. Students will begin by viewing the shapes of several pieces in the park for inspiration before creating loose armatures from wire. The structures will be covered with paper material made in class; as the pulpy material dries, the forms will twist and contract to the armatures. THE IRON POUR AT GFS

Saturday, November 2 GFS began with the Johnson Atelier and its foundry pouring molten metals to create sculpture. Led by artists from the Ab0mIn0g International Arts Collective of Trenton, we’re keeping the tradition alive using red-hot iron. You’re not just invited to watch, you’re invited to make your own art. SCRATCH MOLD WORKSHOP Session ONE: 10am–11:30am optional park tour at 11:45am Session TWO: 12–1:30pm optional park tour at 1:45pm Create your own iron artwork by making a Scratch Mold. Suitable for beginners and students of any skill level, you’ll scratch unique designs into an 8-inch sand mold which will be cast with molten iron by Ab0mIn0g artists during the afternoon’s demonstration. At the end of the day, take home your one-of-a-kind art. The workshop cost includes park admission the day of the event, all materials needed for the workshop, the casting of your piece in iron, and a tour of GFS following your workshop session. CELLO FURY IN CONCERT Saturday, November 9, 8pm A cello rock powerhouse featuring three cellists and a drummer, Cello Fury’s original music combines the emotive and symphonic sounds of the cello paired with driving beats to create a cinematic, progressive sound. Cellists Simon Cummings, Ben Muñoz, and Nicole Myers unleash raw energy and rhythmic drive in their music and venture past traditional expectations. “HAVE A BALL!” HOLIDAY ORNAMENTS DEMONSTRATION Saturday, November 9, 1pm, 2pm, & 3pm Get ready for the first ever Grounds For Sculpture holiday ornament contest! Get inspired by watching artists Colleen Attara, Kathy Metaxes, and Andrea Santoro craft three unique holiday ornaments. Then roll up your sleeves and see what you can create! Patrons interested in entering our contest can pick up a free ornament kit following the demonstration. HANDBLOWN GLASS ORNAMENTS Session One: Saturday, Nov. 16; Session Two: Sunday, Nov. 17, 11am–4pm Back by overwhelming demand! No glassblowing experience needed! Learn the old world craft of using Glaskolben tubes and a torch to make handblown glass ornaments. In this fun and easy class, create 10 glass ornaments perfect for decorations or holiday gifts. Bring a shoebox and packing materials (tissue paper, bubble wrap, etc.) to transport your ornaments home. All other materials provided at workshop.
