Thanks to the generosity of the Johnson Arts and Education Foundation GFS is embarking on a bold experiment designed to turn our coldest season into your warmest memories by giving you dozens of new reasons to visit us this winter.

Of course the park is open year-round (Rat’s Restaurant too) and our sculpture is spectacular in every season, especially Aerial Roots, our new exhibition in The Meadow. But don’t forget our six indoor exhibitions and our new trams to help you move from building to building.

Winter Wonders is all about making GFS extra special. So, we’ve given each month a heartwarming theme and filled them with new attractions and treats for young and old alike.

DECEMBER

is all about “Holidays Happenings”. You’ll find us bedecked with thousands of dazzling lights, horse-drawn carriage rides through the park, a Holiday Artisan Boutique, seasonal concerts, performances for the kids, a tea party and brunches, decorating workshops and more to make your holiday truly joyous.

JANUARY

….brrrrrr. Our theme is “Warmth in Winter” and how better to create that than by curling up with a good book. Join our 3-part GFS Book Club and visit our Library Weekend Book Sales or celebrate Chinese New Year, the Year of the Dragon Spectacular with Nai-Ni Chen Dance Co., a Chinese musical concert, paper cutting and calligraphy workshops, tea, brunches, and an amazing dinner at Rat’s with guest chef Scott Swiderski of Buddakan.

FEBRUARY

…I’m ready for spring already. So no matter what the Groundhog says, “Spring Comes Early” at GFS with Garden Club Weekends, horticultural workshops, and fun lectures including two by the organic gardening guru himself Mike McGrath. We didn’t forget Valentine’s Day either. And we are proud to be the newest stop on the national tour of the renowned Black Maria Film Festival.

And there’s so much more at the restaurant, in the shops, on the grounds: Yoga, wine tasting, cooking classes, Club Rat’s, ice sculpture, a White Hot Russian Vodka Dinner and of course the everpopular Tots on Tour (twice each month).

ABOUT GROUNDS FOR SCULPTURE Nestled in the heart of central New Jersey lies Grounds For Sculpture (GFS), a magical place where art and nature are always at play. At its core are more than 270 sculptures by renowned and emerging contemporary artists, each thoughtfully positioned on meticulously landscaped parklands full of thousands of exotic trees and flowers. It is a feast for the senses. The works, many of them monumental, include those of such distinguished artists as Clement Meadmore, Anthony Caro, Beverly Pepper, Kiki Smith, George Segal, Magdalena Abakanowicz, and Isaac Witkin. They join the enchanting works of our visionary founder Seward Johnson as well as many others by the finest up and coming artists of our time. The collection and exhibits at Grounds For Sculpture contain art works that may be of a challenging, sensitive and/or mature nature. Please be aware and consult GFS staff for advice if you have specific concerns.

ACCESSIBILITY Grounds For Sculpture is a leader in designing its facilities and programs to serve persons with disabilities. The Domestic Arts Building is fully accessible as is the Visitor’s Center and the Seward Johnson Center for the Arts. The Museum Building, fully accessible on the first floor, has a specially designed digital slideshow featuring artwork on its mezzanine level. Large print editions of information and brochures are available in all three buildings.

Special vehicles are available to assist persons who have mobility impairments with two weeks advance notice. Touch tours for the visually impaired may be arranged with advance reservations.

JOIE DE VIVRE WITH ARTIST SEWARD JOHNSON Thursday, December 8, 2011, 12–3pm Grab this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to dine and converse with GFS’s very own Wonder in any season, visionary founder Seward Johnson. Known Photo by John Robson as the artist who created the Man-on-the-Street sculptures, Johnson is equally noted for his Beyond the Frame series of sculptures of French impressionist paintings (so many right here in the park) and his Icons series, including the 26-foot Forever Marilyn that is making such a splash in Chicago.

Start the afternoon with a personally guided tour of his studio with its unique Van Gogh bedroom. Then join Mr. Johnson in the exotic atmosphere of Rat’s Restaurant for a sumptuous lunch and lively conversation. $150 Members; $175 Non-members.

HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGE RIDES Saturdays, December 3, 10, 17, 5–8pm Come see the wonder of the park ablaze with sparkling lights in a horse-drawn carriage as you’re taken throughout the merrily transformed landscape of Grounds For Sculpture! We’ve created our own GFS tradition as Opera NJ, the Garden State’s premier opera company, returns to perform a free holiday concert to excite the senses of adults and children alike and fill you with the holiday spirit. HOLIDAY CANDLE-MAKING WORKSHOPS FOR KIDS Saturday, December 17, 12 & 1pm Candles are a distinctive feature in many cultures’ holiday celebrations. In each of these workshops, children will learn how to make a different type of candle to bring home (two candles per child per session)! At noon make aluminum foil molds from which candles will be created. In the 1PM workshop, kids will learn how to create floating candles! Sign your child up for one or both of these fun sessions. JANUARY Warmth in Winter

Find it in a stimulating book, a tranquil meditation, a fiery drink or the hottest Chinese New Year ever, right here at GFS PAPER CUTTING IN CHINESE STYLE Saturday, January 14, 11am and 12pm Learn the basics of paper cutting from master paper cutter Hou-Tien Cheng, whose astounding work is featured in the Education Gallery. In each of our two 45-minute sessions, adults will learn the basics of using paper cutting scissors and practice a variety of techniques under the expert guidance of the artist. Then watch in awe as he creates nearly anything you can imagine in a matter of seconds.

CHINESE CALLIGRAPHY DEMONSTRATION Saturday, January 14, 1–4pm Free with park admission Observe master calligrapher Michael Shiue as he demonstrates the movingly beautiful traditional art of Chinese calligraphy. Using only rice paper, brush pens, and Chinese ink, Shiue will astound and transfix you with this ancient Chinese art form.

YEAR OF THE DRAGON WITH NAI-NI CHEN DANCE COMPANY Sunday, January 15, 2pm As the spring thunder rolls in, the magical Chinese Dragon wakes up from its hibernation and descends from the high mountains to Grounds For Sculpture. CHINESE NEW YEAR TEA SERVICE AT THE PEACOCK CAFÉ Sunday, January 22, 1–3pm Celebrate the Year of the Dragon by treating your family to a delicious afternoon tea that includes regional delicacies and fine teas. Reservations are required.

YANG YI GUZHENG ACADEMY Sunday, January 29, 2pm Free with park admission On this afternoon, let the dreamlike sounds of the guzheng, a 21-stringed instrument similar to a zither transform the beautiful landscape of GFS into the ancient world of China. The Yang Yi Academy, founded by worldrenowned master guzheng virtuoso Yang Yi, consists of gifted musicians from Central New Jersey. Its rigorous academic program has successfully placed dozens of award-winning students in regional, national, and international competitions. Come hear why.

WONDERS OF WINTER PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP Thursdays: 5, 12, 19, 26, 10:30am–12:30pm Discover the beauty of Grounds For Sculpture in winter! Learn the elements of composition, critiquing, and tried and true techniques for taking stunning landscape photographs. Each session of this four-week workshop includes both classroom time and outdoors photographing, weather permitting. Please dress appropriately. An SLR or digital camera is required.

TRANSFORMING BOOKS INTO ART: ALTERED BOOKS WORKSHOP Saturday, January 7, 10:30am–4:30pm Make a used book a personal work of art at this one-day workshop taught by an area artist who specializes in book arts, handmade papers, and printmaking.

Consider the book as your canvas and explore how to use painting, stamping, and collage to create something truly unique. Books and art materials are included in the registration cost. Students may personalize their book with photos and small decorative items from home. Instructor: Kathleen Lang Metaxas. $110 Members; $120 Non-members.

VINYASA YOGA Tuesdays: January 10, 17, 24, 10:30am–12pm Vinyasa yoga is a movement-oriented style of yoga. Each pose moves to the next - guided by your breathing. It is fun and easy to begin and creates strength, flexibility and a connection to a peaceful mind. These workshops are designed for students of all abilities, from the beginner to the advanced.

This three-week class, taught by Instructors from the Prancing Peacock Yoga Studio, will incorporate meditation techniques and using breath to coordinate movement and body alignment. Please bring a yoga mat, blanket or towel and water. $40 Members; $50 Non-members.

ICE SCULPTURE DEMONSTRATIONS Sunday, January 22, 2–4pm Free with park admission Let the chips fall where they may! Watch as a group of astounding artists carve super hot sculptures from frigid blocks of ice. All true masters of this craft, you’ll be amazed at what they create and how they create it!

GROUNDS FOR SCULPTURE BOOK CLUB Sundays: January 15, 22, 29, 12-1pm Join the GFS Book Club to meet your fellow book lovers and discover, discuss, and debate some truly great reads! Led by Jackie Marcus, a librarian in the North Brunswick and East Brunswick libraries, and a passionate lover of books, art and lively discourse, each selection highlights a different facet of art, whether as an industry, a devotion, a deeply personal experience or a bit of all three. Keeping the World Away recounts how Gwen John’s master painting The Corner of the Artist’s Room in Paris came to be and imagines the impact it has had on its various owners.

It illuminates both artistic creativity and the great and astonishing effects art can have.

Seven Days in the Art World is a funny series of non-fiction narratives, which reveal the inner workings of the institutions of the art world that contribute to an artist’s place in history from art school all the way up to a Christie’s auction.

Renoir’s Montmartre is the setting of this historical novel, which combines fact and fiction to tell the story behind his famed painting, which by the way is also the inspiration for Seward Johnson’s riotous sculpture Were You Invited at GFS.

LIBRARY WEEKEND BOOK SALES On two weekends this month you can also come to GFS to hunt for elusive and intriguing titles AND support the important role of libraries in our communities.

FAUX PLEIN-AIR WATERCOLORS WORKSHOP Wednesdays: January 11, 18, 25 and February 8, 15, 22, 10:30am-1:30pm Plein-air roughly translates to “in the open air” and traditionally means paintings that are made outdoors. The ability to distill quickly what you observe and paint in a simple manner will lead to plein-air style success. Although this six-session class will take place indoors, students will use the stunning vistas upon Grounds For Sculpture’s landscape from our many buildings for subjects and inspiration. So come imagine it in the height of summer and learn to use watercolors to paint in plein-air style. Materials are included in the registration fee.

HOT FARE AT RAT’S

LIGHT, SHADOW AND FORM IN PHOTOGRAPHY: A LECTURE AND WORKSHOP Saturday, January 28, 1-5pm Designed for photographers who have a basic understanding of how their camera operates and are now looking for something more, this workshop will teach you to see your favorite subjects in a new way by understanding how light and shadow define them. Learn how to see the quality and quantity of light as it relates to shadow and composition. Discussion and demonstration will refer to photographing people, pets, flowers, close-ups, landscapes, architecture, and travel subjects.

WHITE HOT: RUSSIAN VODKA DINNER Saturday, January 21 A train chugs across frozen Siberia…Dr. Zhivago and Lara shiver beneath bearskins in a sled on the snowy streets of Moscow. Where is there refuge from the Russian coldness of winter? Why, Rat’s of course! So dress warm in winter white clothes to join us for caviar and a 5-course tasting menu of Russian cuisine paired with vodkas and wines, then dancing and cocktails in the pavilion till midnight.

YEAR OF THE WATER DRAGON DINNER Friday February 3, 6pm 2012 is the Chinese Year of Water Dragon. Dragons are the most powerful of all signs. But Water Dragons are special. INDOOR WATER GARDEN WORKSHOP Saturday, February 4, 12:30–3pm Escape from winter by creating a miniature, indoor garden!

BARBARA BROMLEY, MASTER GARDENER Sunday, February 19, 2pm Free with park admission The first Master Gardener Program began in Washington State in 1972 and quickly spread to all 50 states and several countries worldwide. In 1993, Mercer County in New Jersey created its own Master Gardener Program as part of the Rutgers U. Cooperative Extension Program to meet an enormous increase in demand for horticultural information for home gardeners.

In this drop-in workshop, families can construct their own cherry blossoms using tissue paper for flowers and leaves and attaching several to a branch to create the impression of blooming cherry tree cuttings. SEED BOMB WORKSHOP Saturday, February 25, 1–3pm A seed bomb is a little capsule with everything needed to grow a plant all bundled up: clay, fertilizer and indigenous seeds.

Prepare for spring by creating seed bombs that will bring natural beauty wherever you throw them. Rain will melt the clay to expose and sow the seeds, and your seeds will grow.

BLACK MARIA FILM FESTIVAL Saturday, February 25 Screening I, 4pm; Screening II, 7:30pm For over 30 years, New Jersey’s own Black Maria Film Festival (BMFF) has won acclaim for promoting independent filmmaking by widely exhibiting works by both veteran and emerging film and video makers.

The festival’s annual juried competition results in 40 to 60 works for its annual tour, which has grown nationally and is now a “feeder festival” for the Oscars. GFS is proud to present two screenings of the Festival with selections specially curated for it by BMFF Founder John Columbus, selections that feature insightful, free spirited, humorous, experimental, even poetic works sure to delight and inspire. Focus on Sculpture Beginning January 21 with an Opening Reception from 4-6pm The Education Gallery in the Johnson Arts and Education Center is the site of this annual juried exhibition of work by amateur photographers who use sculpture as subject or inspiration. This year’s distinguished juror is Frank DiGiovanni, a fine art photographer of 20 years, whose wide ranging work includes architecture, macro photography, advertising and interior design. And don’t forget that on Saturday, January 28, 11am Frank DiGiovanni will give a talk on the works in the Focus on Sculpture and the process by which he juried them. Free with park admission.
