Celebrate Summer

québec

The time of the year to savor the golden rays and spend time outdoors in the landscapes Québec offers. The many national parks offer great opportunities for those seeking adventure including kayaking, hiking trails and water skiing. As the sun beats down in Montréal, the city comes alive with festivals and street artists. Come see the largest Jazz festival in the world or spend a day in celebrating the French roots on June 24th, Québec’s National Holiday, also known as St. Jean Baptiste Day.

Color in the Fall

Québec borders the Canadian province of Ontario on the west and the provinces of New Brunswick and Newfoundland & Labrador on the west. South of Québec is the USA, with the states of New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. The province is made out of three regions, the Canadian Shield, St. Lawrence Lowlands and Appalachian Mountains. Counting over seven million people, most of the population lives around the St. Lawrence River. The river links Québec to the Atlantic Ocean and is 3800km (2,361mi). long. Aside from the St Lawrence, Québec has more than a one million lakes and waterways. Forest covers half of Québec. The official language in Québec is French and is used by the majority of the population, although particularly in cities like Montréal, Québec City and other urban centers English is spoken and understood. History of the French however is maintained and can be seen in the little villages and the cobbled streets of Old Montréal. The motto of the province is “Je me souviens” which is French for “I remember”. Travel along the St. Lawrence River, dotted with picturesque villages and beautiful countryside. Take a moment to journey along the many trails that the region has to offer.

Explore the urban city of Montréal, with its many museums, parks, cafes and nightlife, this city has everything to offer. Québec City was named a world heritage site by UNESCO, one of only two world heritage sites in North America. Rich with history and culture, this city is a must-see. In the North the Inuit, Cree, Algonquin and other natives still live their traditional lives in the wild tundra landscape. Visiting this region offers the great opportunity to learn more about their culture and way of life. Northern Québec is also home to a large variety of wildlife, such as the fascinating caribou. An abundance of wildlife can not only be found in Northern Québec, but everywhere in the province. Enter one of the 22 national parks or 14 wildlife reserves where a variety of animals can be found. Many of these parks are ideal for bird watching and fishing, but also offer an abundance of nature and activities. If you are an animal lover, do not miss Bonaventure Island in Gaspé, a sanctuary for more than 250,000 seabirds. We invite you read on and learn more about what there is to see and do in the regions of the fascinating province of Québec. And start planning!

Watch the foliage turn red and yellow in the many forests as hiking trails turn into nice multicolored carpets. It will be a dream come true for hikers and photographers alike. Also to be explored are orchards, vineyards and tastings of small-scale home-made beer, cider and mead. You can follow Québec’s first marked wine route through Cantons-de-L’est with 13 vineyards along the way. Hotels and tour packages are focused on this special time of the year.

Winter Wonderland Once the winter approaches it is time to hit the hills in Mont Tremblant. The world renowned ski village offers all the winter activities you could desire. The nature parks around the province also offer everything from skiing to dog sledding. Don’t miss the winter carnival in Québec City, lasting ten days and there are winter sports, dances, ice sculptures and parades. It also comes with the unique ice hotel.

welcome to québec

Every year millions of people are drawn to the festivals in Montréal, the history in Québec City, the lakes and forests around the province and the fierce tundra of the Northern regions. With such a diversity and each region offering it’s own unique treasures, it is easy to see why the province was listed among the top 20 best tourist destinations in the world.

Spring in your step As the leaves reappear on the trees and the snow melts away, maple shacks around Québec open for the public to share their sugary goodness; a sign that spring has begun. Birdwatchers should not miss the thousands of snow geese visiting Québec after flying more than 900 kilometers to reach the St. Lawrence River banks. Activities around these 800,000 birds take place from Lac St.-Pierre to Cap Tourmente. The annual Canadian Tulip festival takes place in Gatineau and Ottawa, filling the cities with millions of these flowers.

Québec, the place to be all year long.

Underground City Montréal Below the streets of Montréal, thousands of people commute, shop and eat every day. The underground city is the largest underground complex in the world and has 32km (20mi) of tunnels spread over an area of twelve square km. Along side the metro stations and shops you will find businesses, hotels, banks, cinemas and restaurants. There are more than 120 exterior access points to the underground city. It all started in the 1960s when the building of Place Ville-Marie began. It grew over the years, especially when the metro opened in 1966. For both tourists and locals the underground streets offer a perfect opportunity to escape the elements and get from a to b without having to go outside.

Québec has several airports, the largest of which are located in the St. Lawrence Lowlands. Montréal’s Trudeau International Airport is Québec’s main airport for domestic and international flights. The other international airport is Mirabel and is located north of Montréal. This airport is primarily used for air cargo. These roads are the basis of Québec’s highway system and span a distance totaling over 1,900km (1181mi).

By Bus Greyhound can take you from New York or Boston to Montréal, where you can connect to buses within Québec. There is a frequent bus service between Québec City and Montréal with express buses from Orléans Express.

There are two transcontinental trains crossing starting in Québec, Montréal to Vancouver and Montréal to Halifax as well as trains going to Montréal. Montréal is also a major hub for other train connections, from both Canada and the USA. Amtrak offers a train service from New York City’s Penn Station to Montréal. www.viarail.ca

“Sport tourism is any activity in which people are attracted to a particular location as a sport event participant, an event spectator, or to attend sport attractions or business meetings.” (CSTA) Sport team and event travel is on the rise as teams travel further to take in tournaments, events, and activities related to their sport. And sports travelers are doing more than playing the game and loading on and off a bus. Today’s team travel involves more activity and entertainment outside the sport purpose than ever before. Trips are getting longer, and they’re incorporating more tourism activity in the destination. Information Sourced from Student Youth Travel Association

A horse-drawn carriage ride through the cobblestone streets is an enchanting way to see the Upper Town. Each year the city comes alive with the Québec City Summer Festival and the famous Carnaval, the world’s largest winter festival. The Montmorency Falls, just outside the towering at 83m (272ft), are also worth the visit. With penetrating valleys and soaring mountains, Charlevoix is a natural wonder. Forged by a meteorite some 250 million years ago, today the area is home to Le Massif, the highest vertical drop east of the Rockies. Travel along the “flavour trail,” the Route des saveurs, to discover best dining in the region. Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean is a paradise for nature lovers and all manner of outdoor adventure can be found here. southern québec Nestled between Québec City and Montréal, Centre-du-Québec has been touched by many cultures in its long history. From the Abenaki Native Americans to the French, Irish, Scots and Loyalists, the region has been shaped by their influences. Travel the Celtic Way, and discover the first Scottish and Irish settlements, or explore the area via one of the specially designed themed itineraries, including the Antiques Route and the Gardens Route. For the nature lover, snowmobile trails, ATV trails and bike paths are readily accessible and each spring and fall the snow geese stop here during their migration, making this a haven for bird watchers and outdoor enthusiasts. The nearby Chaudière-Appalaches region is well known for its distinctive architecture and unspoiled nature. Tiny towns dot the landscape, home to the stunning 115 ft high waterfalls at Parc des Chutes-de-la-Chaudière, as well as a number of parks and gardens. The simple pleasures of country life await you in the Eastern Townships. Here, relaxation and natural charm blend as harmoniously as the rolling green hills and long, flowing rivers of the region. Vineyards and cider houses, art galleries, antique shops and Victorian inns abound in the charismatic villages that dot the countryside.

The city is known for fine dining, shopping and outstanding museums dedicated to green energy, the biosciences and the exploration of space. The valley of Montérégie is rich in history, and is home to many period homes and historic sites. If you want to experience a gastronomic treat, a visit to the region’s agricultural centre is not to be missed. Gourmets will delight in the decadent chocolate and fresh, home-grown produce; many farms will invite you to pick your own. On the Countryman’s Tour (Circuit du Paysan), wind your way through the valley’s vineyards, farms and cider producers, and even learn the art of making ice cider.

Chisasibi Each summer the pow-wow at Chisasibi draws people from everywhere to experience the culture of the Cree. A tradition pow-wow is held with special dancers and guests to celebrate the tradition way of life. Even if you won’t be there for the pow-wow, the village offers an opportunity to experience the Cree way of life. Sleep in a teepee for example. The Spillway, also known as The Staircase for Giants, is part of the Robert-Bourassa Hydroelectric Generating Station on the La Grande River. The Robert Bourassa is the largest underground powerhouse in the world. The fourhour guided tour covers a 25km (15mi) route and includes a bus ride, a drive along the edge of the 53-storey dam and going underground through a tunnel two thirds of a mile long. Coming to an end in Raddison is James Bay Road. This 381km (238mi) long road is the longest service-free stretch of road in Canada and begins in Matagami. The road travels along the taiga landscape and crosses some big rivers. A sight not to be missed along this route are the rapids of the Rupert River. Nemaska North from Nemaska, the smallest Cree village in the region, you enter the largest wildlife reserve in Québec-The Albanel, Mistissini and Waconichi

ne

Lakes. Lake Mistissini is Québec’s biggest freshwater lake and as large as an interior sea. The diversity of fish species will appeal to enthusiasts, who can catch lake trout, brook trout and walleye all in the same lake. Visitors are required to register with SEPAQ for all activities in the reserve. Chibougamau Housed in the heart of a mountain, you’ll find the Mining Discovery Centre amidst the remains of old Bruneau Mine. A tour will take you through the evolution of mines throughout the ages and show you the work of miners. A sound and light show will take you back to the beginning of life on earth. Tel: 418 748 4209 www.jamesbay-travelguide.com/the-south/miningdiscovery-centre The Village of Mistissini is one of the largest Cree villages in Northern Québec. With an extensive history of trade, the village was also once known as Baie-de-Poste. Mistissini’s name originates from the Cree term “Big Rock”. The village is positioned next to Lake Mistissini, making it ideal for an exciting fishing excursion. Outdoor adventurers are sure to enjoy visiting this community! The Cree community of Waswanipi has a population of approximately 1200, and derives its name from the Cree term for “light waters”. Located along a river junction, Waswanipi has historically been noted for natural resource development. Annually the community celebrates Chiiwetaau or “going home”, a celebration of the community’s past.

Nunavik

Aupaluk This small Inuit village has a population of under a 160 people, presenting an opportunity for visitors to easily make contact with the Inuit people who can accompany travelers wishing to discover the area and seeing the wildlife in the area. Here are the largest herds of caribou ever recorded. Close to a million Caribous make their annual autumn migration, a sight unmatched in the world. Around the village the landscape is flat and ideal for hiking excursions, which include magnificent views over the tundra and Ungava Bay.

Kangiqsujuaq The village of Kangiqsujuaq, once the site of the Hudson’s Bay Company and Révillon Frères trading posts at the beginning of the 20th century, lies in a valley surrounded by grand mountains and a landscape of stunning beauty. Stay and see how the local Inuit harvest their mussels in the winter. During low tide, they pierce holes in the sea ice, dropping themselves down to collect the seafood delicacy. Pingualuit Crater is a basin of water, located about 88km (55mi) from Kangiqsujuaq, and was created by a meteor 1.4 million years ago. The 3.4km (2.1mi) diameter crater rises 160m above the surrounding tundra and is 400m deep. It contains some of the purest water in the world. In 1999 the crater was renamed “Pingualuit”, which means “where the land rises” in the local Inuit language.
