Hug Your Cat Day Hugging is proven to reduce stress; so is owning and caring for a pet! Imagine how relaxed you’ll be after giving your cat a quick squeeze! No cat in the house? Find a stuffed animal or fire up Youtube for a funny cat video marathon.
National Doughnut Day National Doughnut Day was created by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honor those who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. Many donut shops like to celebrate this day by giving away free donuts! Krispy Kreme, Dunkin Donuts and Duck Donuts have all confirmed fun promotions on this day!

National Best Friends Day It’s time to honor our best friends, the people who laugh with us (and maybe a little at us) who support us, love us and encourage us everyday. Your best friends may be near or far, but spend some time today letting them know how important they are to you. And remember, Best Friend is a classification, not just a single person! June 17
Eat Your Vegetables Day Strategically created in the middle of National Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Month, this day is the perfect opportunity
Roanoke Valley
to re-introduce a healthy portion of vegetables into your diet. On this day, you are encouraged to eat vegetables for every meal, and for a snack. We encourage parents to let the kids help with dinner, preparing the salad and vegetables. Along the way, you tell your kids a little about the importance of vegetables for a long and healthy life.

Juneteenth/ Freedom Day celebrates and symbolizes the end of slavery in the United States. President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862. It was not until June 19, 1865 that all slaves were finally freed. That concluding event was when General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas with his troops and issued Order Number 3 which finally freed the last of the slaves. The formal end of slavery was marked by the passing of the 13th amendment of the constitution. We suggest reading Juneteenth for Mazie by Floyd Cooper together as a family today!
Roanoke Valley Family’s Streaming Recommendations
“Netflix recently add Avatar: The Last Airbender to their service; it’s been fun to watch that together with the kids.”
Josh Eagan Publisher June 21
Father’s Day Honor the fathers in your life today. In this time of quarantine nearly every father figure we know would love a day of rest and peace (and maybe even some alone time!) June 22
World Rainforest Day Pretend you are on a tropical vacation and celebrate Rainforest Day! National Geographic
and Disney+ have many great documentaries about our earth’s rainforests for your family to watch as you sip on a tropical smoothie and snack on some bananas and pineapple! June 30
International Mud Day Put down the electronics, and break out the mud pie supplies. Get down and dirty in your backyards and make some good old fashion MUD. Use the mud to create castles, pies or if you’re brave, a mud slinging fight!
“I binge-watched all of Hulu’s The Great in just two days. It’s a smart, witty comedy about Russian History!”
Tracy Fisher Creative Director
