Traditions Run Deep By Jack Bigej Al’s Son & 2nd Generation Owner

I

remember when I was a young boy and Christmas was downright magical! It was a time to gather all of the family together, rejoice in the season, and celebrate our traditions. Whether it is a special activity you do as a family every Holiday season or canning pickles in August, our traditions build memories and strengthen our family bond. The magic of the holidays continues and I have been blessed to relive it each year through the eyes of my children and now my grandchildren. During the holidays, memories come flooding back to me in giant waves. Some are funny, like how as a boy, my brother and I would have to bring home over five Christmas trees each year just to find one that would please my mother. Luckily for our customers, her pickiness has rubbed off on my son and he and my crew of grandkids are extra careful about the trees they choose for us to offer at Al’s. The Christmas tree is a central part of everyone’s holiday

decorating, and at Al’s, we have many to choose from. Whether you love a fresh green tree, a sparkling white flocked tree or the ease of an everlasting tree, we have a large assortment of sizes and varieties to choose from. After you have done the hard work of picking out the perfect Christmas tree, it is time to embellish it. Our gift buyer, Candice, has some great ideas to give you a head start on not only stringing the lights, but also creating a unique tree with a beautiful selection of ornaments and holiday themes. Check out our gift guide in this issue of Bloom for some great gift and decorating ideas. There are few plants that are as closely associated with a holiday as poinsettias and Christmas. We started growing poinsettias over 30 years ago and boy, have they come a long way since those days! Today, our grower, Jill West, tends to

over 40,000 poinsettias in one season with more than 40 varieties available at Al’s retail stores. There is definitely something for everyone when it comes to these traditional Christmas beauties. For a sneak peak at the poinsettias we have to offer in 2017, you won’t want to miss our Evening of Lights event in November! This time of year is all about making memories and we hope Al’s Garden Centers are a part of your holiday traditions, whether you’re attending our Evening of Lights, listening to story time with Mrs. Claus, eating a delicious ice apple, or picking out a Christmas tree or poinsettia to take home. We hope to see you in our stores soon and from our family to yours, we wish you a safe and happy holiday season.

Poinsettias An Al’s Tradition

O

ver 65 million Poinsettias are sold nationally every year, making it the number one potted plant for the holiday season. At Al’s, we grow over 40,000 poinsettias each year at our farm in Hubbard, OR, delivered fresh daily to our stores to ensure the highest quality. That wasn’t always the case though. We sat down with Jack Bigej, Al’s Second Generation Owner, to find out why they decided to start growing poinsettias and what’s changed since then.

When did you start growing poinsettias and why? We started growing poinsettias in the 1980’s because we couldn’t buy the quality that we wanted to offer our customers. When we started our own, we took measures to create a higher quality plant – using more spacing and hand watering, among other practices, which produced a sturdier plant that didn’t break, and had more blooms and a nicer shape.

Poinsettias can be a challenge to grow. What’s the funniest thing that has happened while learning to do it?

all over the bracts and leaves. We had to use leaf shine and spray each and every plant to remove them. I always say that growing poinsettias is like lighting a stick of dynamite on the 4th of July, putting it in your pocket, and hoping it doesn’t go off before Christmas…. you never know when something might go wrong.

Al’s Purple People:

My Favorite

Christmas Tradition

“O

ne of my favorite Christmas traditions is taking my kids’ picture each year in front of our Al’s-grown poinsettias for my Christmas card. I can remember the early years when my 3 year old son was holding my baby girl, trying to keep her from falling over while I took the picture. I have a photo from each year that reminds me of how precious time is and how fast it goes. Now at 24 and 21, my kids are all grown up, but they still let me snap a picture of them in front of the poinsettias for old times’ sake!

-Dorothy Russo

One year, someone unknowingly watered all of the poinsettias overhead with fertilizer water, leaving blue spots Holiday 2017 • 5

What has changed with poinsettias from when you started growing your own to now? The varieties of poinsettias have improved and there are so many now to choose from. The plants are way more disease resistant and sturdier than they used to be. We used to pray that the poinsettias would leave our store and make it home alive, but now customers call us in February and ask when their poinsettia is going to die.

Just how many different varieties of poinsettias DO you grow, and why? We grow over 40 varieties of poinsettias today. It used to be just red, but now we grow 13 different reds alone, as well as a whole array of colors from pink to white to speckled and everything in between. There’s something for everyone, whether you like traditional or more unconventional.

So then which one is your favorite? The one that is walking out the door is always my favorite! But in all seriousness, I love bright orange, so Orange Spice is my favorite and is a perfect choice for the early season around Thanksgiving.

Poinsettia Care Tips

Poinsettias are easy to keep beautiful and blooming throughout the holidays and beyond, as long as you follow a few simple tips: • Avoid exposing your poinsettia to freezing conditions. Do not leave it in the car while you finish shopping. Take it home and place it inside the house as soon as possible after purchasing it. • Place your poinsettia in a spot with bright natural light, but do not expose it to direct sunlight. • Do not place your poinsettia in an area where it will be exposed to drafts, heat from appliances, radiators, or ventilation ducts. • The color of your poinsettia will last longer in temperatures about 65ºF during the day and 60º-65ºF at night. • The soil should be kept moderately moist; check every few days and water when the soil feels dry to the touch. Before watering, remove the plant from the decorative pot cover or foil wrapping; water to saturate the soil. Allow the pot to drain completely. Do not let the plant sit in standing water.

A Unique Tradition:

Christmas Cactus F

amilies hand down many sentimental objects to the next generation. We all have gotten a favorite photo or trinket to remember a beloved family member. I think the best hand me down has to be a Christmas Cactus! It’s a living thing entrusted to you to take care of until you pass it on to the next cousin, nephew, or niece in the family. Plus, there is probably a great story behind Great Aunt Hattie’s Plant.

Christmas cactus have been a staple as a houseplant for many years. They bloom in many different colors and seem to always be attached to special family stories. I went on the web to find more information about this unique heirloom. I found smiling photos of people that have had a Christmas cactus in their families for over 100 years, as well as a confession of someone who very sadly admitted to killing it by leaving the cherished plant out in the snow. There were several entries of people with very happy memories of Christmas cactus, and a few sad stories too. Luckily, MY Christmas cactus story has a happy ending! A few years ago I inherited a HUGE plant from my friend who was moving to Puerto Rico. I have a very dark house but I knew I had to take on this lovely plant that had been in her family for over 30 years. I found the brightest

spot in my house to site the Christmas cactus. Its new home is a wooden plant stand in from of an all-glass door leading to the side driveway. I don’t use the door too often so it seemed like a great solution. It must have been good for the plant, as it happily bloomed its little heart out that first year and every year since.

As you can tell, this is an easy blooming plant to lighten up the dreary days of the winter. If you don’t have this treasured family heirloom, it’s not too late this holiday season. Stop by any of the Al’s Garden & Home stores and start a new tradition in your family.

Christmas Cactus Care * Bright Light (As bright you can give in winter/ No direct sunshine in summer)

* Keep soil a little moist but not sopping wet when flower buds begin to appear

* Keep soil a bit drier the rest of the year * When flower buds start to form, treat

the plant to a light dose of fertilizer every 2 weeks

* In late spring, lightly trim foliage to keep plant from getting too large

* April to August, fertilize every 2 weeks Holiday 2017 • 7

My Favorite

Christmas Tradition

“O

ur favorite family tradition is the “Magic Penguin”. When our oldest son was 12 and our youngest twins were 2, he started the tradition of the magic penguin. He sewed a santa hat for a stuffed penguin that we had at home and on December 1st the penguin would arrive, sent by Santa to watch over the kids and make sure they were being good. Every day, the penguin would move around the house. The girls would give the penguin letters to take back to Santa and they would search the house for him each day when they woke up. In recent years, the magic penguin has brought along a younger penguin in training. This has been so fun for our whole family and kept the Christmas magic alive for all ages!

I Wish My Tree Could

Look Like That

F

or more than a decade, as the Al’s Visual Team decorates the trees that are the focal points of the Christmas Shops at Al’s Garden & Home, we have heard the statement many times: “I wish my tree could look like that.” The response is, “It can!” All it takes is a bit of imagination and some outside-the-box thinking - which is what we do when approaching each of the Al’s trees.

Basic Beginnings Whether your tree is a natural beauty, or a manufactured everlasting tree, make certain it is secure in its stand. If positioned against a wall, or in a corner, you may want to secure it to the wall with wires, for decorating just the front of a tree can cause it to topple over, a lesson learned by Christopher Radco after losing dozens of precious family ornaments one Christmas. However, that was the stimulus for him to start his company in the 1980’s producing hand-blown ornaments. An everlasting tree needs to be “fluffed” meaning that each branch and twig needs to be touched: shaped and separated. Not only does this help the tree look more natural, but each exposed branch end provides an opportunity to hang one more ornament! Place light strings on the tree evenly so there are no “hot spots”, or “black holes”. When applying, have light strings lit. It’s easier to deal with electrical problems before the lights are on the tree. Rule of thumb: one string per foot. 10 • als-gardencenter.com

If putting up a pre-lit tree, work by section to “fluff ” and ensure everything is plugged in and working before starting to decorate. After the basic light strings are all lit, it is time to add any optional novelty light strings to the tree. Place them evenly across the tree.

Attention Getters Traditionally, stars or angels have adorned the tops of trees. But a tree topper can be more than just on top of your tree; it can be over-the-top. Think of taking a “Carmen Miranda” approach. Create an “arrangement”: a combination of fruit, flowers, fabric, feathers, large decorative picks or glitter branches anything imaginable. This kind of topper

can not only beautifully reinforce or create a theme for your tree, but can have a jaw-dropping effect. Adding some oversized elements to your tree can also provide a “wow” and interest factor. Such things as a sled or small sleigh; big bare tree branches; large-scale toys, dolls, or stuffed animals; wrapped boxes; large foam candies; huge snowflakes or stars - whatever enhances the theme of your tree. This could be just one giant element toward the top of the tree (even worked in with the topper extravaganza), or several large items spaced across the tree. Make certain they are secured so they won’t shift or fall. One year, we used an electrified chandelier near the top of one of Al’s trees - it was elegant and unusually spectacular! A wonderful thing to do, if decorating a woodland or outdoor theme tree, or

an icy crystal and silver tree, is to place snow blanket or batting to form patches of snow on the tops of the tree branches. Form into clumps at the mid-point of each branch. Finish with a dusting of clear glitter. Consider using large tinsel or ribbon garland to enhance the look of your tree. Garland also enables you to fill a lot of space, so fewer ornaments are needed to make a tree look abundantly full. Garland should be in place prior to hanging ornaments.

Staging with Solids There is a cost effective way to ensure your tree looks full, which will also enhance and showcase your very special ornaments. This is especially good if you are just starting to gather ornaments, and have but a few treasured items. This can be done with inexpensive, solid color ornaments. Even shatterproof (plastic) ornaments can work. Decide on what color or colors of solid color ornaments would enhance your room, or your ornament collection. They can be shiny or matte finish, or a combination of both. Then purchase two sizes: Large (4” - 5”) should be nestled back into the center of the tree. They will provide the backdrop for everything else, and will add depth to the tree. These go on first. Use medium (2½” - 3”) basic ornaments after you have placed your more special collected ornaments. They will fill in the visual gaps, making your tree look fuller and more finished.

Showcasing Your Collection One truly good reason to put up a tree at Christmas is to recall the wonderful memories attached to the precious ornaments collected in years past. Of course, it is also a way to show off the wonderful new treasures you found this year!

Now place those most special of ornaments - the real memory catchers - in very focal locations. Hang them at eye level, on the tips of the branches, so that they will attract attention as family and friends approach the tree. For me, this happens with two very old ornaments that were among the first few my parents owned. Next, decide which ornaments need to be hung in close proximity to each other. Those that depict the nativity, or a collection of Disney characters, for example. Keeping in mind to maintain a visual balance, place the other ornaments. Start with the largest, hanging them low on the tree, and deeper into the tree. Save the smallest for last. These go on the tips of branches, and toward the top of the tree. Small birds and pine cones perched at the top of the tree have always seemed appropriate. Unless you believe, as in the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s, that a Christmas tree is not finished without a myriad of tinsel strands hanging from each branch, you have done it! Pour that glass of eggnog, and with the room lights low, bask in the glow of the Christmas memories that radiate from your lovely tree. May your Holidays be Merry and Bright!

Organize your ornaments so they enhance each other, and help special ornaments stand out. Group like ornaments together: by material, color, theme, motif, size, etc.

Little Decorating Touches That Add

A Lot of Cheer!

HOLIDAY PILLOWS

Traditional, Country Plaid, Modern, Hipster, or Whimsical; there is a pillow for everyone’s personal style. Change out every day throw pillows and add holiday pillows to a chair, or sofa. Create a personal holiday feel to a guest room for out of town guests. It’s a small decorating item that can add that holiday feel to any room and is easy to change out for the changing seasons.

MY FAVORITES This year, I love the red & white “North Pole” arrow pillow. Perfect size for a side chair, and I love the simplicity. Its style will work in both modern and traditional homes, and it can even add a lodge feel to your home. My second favorite, I have two because I can’t choose, is the “HoHoHo” Santa Face pillow because it’s just so sweet!

12 • als-gardencenter.com

VOTIVES

Mix & match or all the same styles, these little sparklers add a touch of holiday warmth to any surface. Add down the center of your dining room table or cluster on the mantel. Use as a place setting or give a set for a hostess gift. Votives are best in numbers, you can’t have too many this time of year, especially when entertaining.

MY FAVORITES

I love the frosted texture votives. They are clean and modern and can be used all year long. I plan on using on my dining table with fresh greens mixed throughout as a center piece.

HOLIDAY SIGNS

Nothing say’s it like a holiday sign, “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year”, “Merry Christmas”, and “Santa Stop’s Here”, all great sentiments for the season. Place outside to welcome guests, use on mantel, or hang in your tree, all ways to tie your decorating theme together. There are also signs with beautiful family sayings that would make a heartfelt gift.

Gift & Decor Guide Winter Mint “Danish modern” or “traditionally retro” are the decorating possibilities with this pop of color! A soft jadeite blue repurposes itself into Christmas. It adds a freshness to red & white, and can be ultra-modern when used with an all-white decor. We’ve incorporated it in our Retro theme, which has a vintage 50’s feel. We love how this color feels now and nostalgic at the same time. If you need to test out this shade in your home, a great place to start would be in the kitchen as a place setting or center piece. The mint color would also be adorable used as a children’s themed tree.

Green Nature This spring we were introduced to the color of the year: “Greenery”. The love of green continues through this holiday season! Green is traditionally a color used for Christmas, but this year it takes on a more nature-inspired feel. Think pine forest or winter green house. I love the use of olive green with pine green, it makes for a beautiful layered look. To add to the layers of green, add pops of copper or gold. This would make a great mantel or centerpiece design. For a clean Scandinavian look, place all green ornaments on an all-white flocked tree.

Nordic - With a TWIST! Nordic charm with an unexpected color is the feel of this theme. It’s a classic red and white with the addition of night blue! Traditional Nordic design is very big this year, and the addition of the blue adds another dimension. Last year we introduced Nordic as a theme, and this year we expanded it. We also have a couple of new themes this year with this night blue color added to show the depth it can add to a tree. Nordic design can lend itself to a comfy, sweater knit, family winter fun look, or clean, minimal contemporary aesthetic. I would pick up the night blue with a small assortment of ornaments to create a new look on a predominately red & white tree, or incorporated into a center piece. If mid-century design is your style, go ultra-Scandinavian with an all-white tree and scatter the night blue ornaments for a minimal but impactful look.

Winter

Blues

‘Goodwin Creek’ lavender

E

very year I try and pull my Christmas scheme together with one common thread, but this year I couldn’t quite settle on just one thing, so I went bold with both color and texture!

It’s always exciting designing containers this time of year, because I get to throw out the sun vs. shade argument, so I can really have fun. I wanted to do something different with my color selection, so I chose blue for this season. Believe it or not, blue is one of the trendiest colors for this winter season and I was pleasantly surprised with all the offerings I had to choose from. For the main event, I went with “Feelin’ Blue” Deodora Cedar. This little guy only grows to about 3’, so it works perfectly in a container and has really nice blue and white tipped needles. It pairs well with the lavender that has a little thicker foliage. I chose “Goodwin Creek” for its texture, not the purple flowers that most love during the spring and summer seasons. Another great filler to use is Euphorbia, which I have chosen “Shorty” because it only grows about 2’ 20 • als-gardencenter.com

tall and has similar water requirements to the Cedar and lavender.

‘Shorty’ Euphorbia

To give a little color, I added white ornamental cabbage and “Emerald Gaiety” Euonymus. Both throw little hints of white, breaking up a total monochromatic scheme. And of course, no container would be complete without a little sparkle, so I paired the unique foliage colors with a fantastic dusty blue container and added a little Christmas Cheer with some pinecone pics and antique ornaments. Christmas means different things to different people and for me, this season is all about unity. I can’t wait to open presents on Christmas Day with my friends and family. Like the colors and textures I’ve worked with on my container, some things may be different, but somehow works together.

Apple Cider Glazed Holiday Ham Ingredients:

Glaze Directions:

• 3 cups + 1 cup of Apple Cider • 1/4 cup Bourbon • 1/4 cup Dijon-Style Mustard • 1/4 cup Honey or Maple Syrup • 1/2 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon • 1/4 tablespoon Ground Cloves • 1 pinch or Ground Nutmeg or Allspice • 3 Apples, washed, cored, and cut into thick slices • 1 large Ham

Combine the 3 cups of apple cider and bourbon in a small saucepan and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Boil until the liquids are reduced by one-third. Whisk in the mustard, honey, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Set aside. Line a roasting pan with heavy-duty foil for easier clean-up. Arrange the apple slices in the pan for a natural roasting rack. Put the ham on top of the apple slices and pour the remaining 1 cup of apple cider around the ham.

love summertime grilling, of course, but there is something extra special about firing up my grill in December and making a traditional holiday ham for friends and family as we gather to celebrate the Christmas season.”

-Aaron Rivera

Cooking Directions: When ready to cook, start your Traeger grill on Smoke with the lid open until the fire is established (4 to 5 minutes). Set the temperature to 325˚ F and preheat, lid closed, for 10 to 15 minutes. Place ham in large roasting pan lined with aluminum foil. Place pan on grill and cook for 1.5 hours. Open grill and glaze ham with reserved mixture. Continue cooking for another 30 minutes or until a thermometer is inserted into the thickest part of the meat and reaches an internal temperatures of 135˚ F. Remove ham from grill and allow to rest for 20 minutes before serving.
