Calls It Quits on Her Talk Show

fter 19 seasons, Ellen DeGeneres will end her daytime talk show, Ellen, next year. “That’s been the plan all along,” she says. “Look, it’s going to be really hard on the last day, but I also know it’s time. Nineteen years is a long time to do anything.” The entertainer, 63, faced accusations earlier this year of allowing her set to become a ‘toxic workplace,’ which caused ratings to plummet. She admits the allegations nearly “destroyed” her. “I became a comedian because I wanted to make people feel good,” says Ellen, who would like to devote more time to animal welfare and environmental causes. “My whole being is about making people happy.” She’d also like to begin acting again. “If there were a great role, I’d be able to do that, which I’m not able to do now.”

Her wife, Portia de Rossi, wanted her to end the show, too.

“I liked being married instead of the girl who’s looking for a guy.” —Doris Day

Doris Day

Her Lifelong Search for

LOVE

SHE ENDURED FOUR UNHAPPY MARRIAGES, AND THE ONE MAN SHE WANTED MOST GOT AWAY

D

oris Day was delighted to see Patrick O’Neal on the set of The Doris Day Show — but she never expected to fall in love! She and the handsome actor, who had previously played her husband in the 1968 film Where Were You When the Lights Went Out?, would enjoy a yearlong love affair that was among the happiest romances of her life. “This man I fell in love with was totally different from the men I had known before,” she confided. It was a breath of fresh air for Doris, who despite her beauty, sweetness and talent, had a knack for falling for men who treated her badly. Three of Doris’ four marriages ended in divorce, and her third husband ruined her financially before he died. “All I ever wanted in my life was to get married, have kids, keep house

and cook,” admitted the star, who passed away in 2019 at age 97. “But where did I end up? Hollywood!”

WHEN I FALL IN LOVE

At 16, Doris began a relationship with Al Jorden, a 23-year-old trombonist whose brooding moods probably seemed romantic to a young girl. They wed in 1941, but Al was a serial cheater prone to fits of jealous rage. He hit Doris, terrorized and threatened to kill her even when she was pregnant with their son, Terry. She finally left him out of fear that he’d hurt the baby. Her second marriage in 1946, to another big band musician, George Weidler, brought her to California. But eight months into their union, George, a womanizer, abandoned Doris and her son when her career began to overshadow his. “My life hasn’t always been like some of my happy musicals, but I’m like one of those dolls with the round bottom,” said Doris. “When things in

life try to knock you down, you just have to bounce back up.” On the surface, her 17-year marriage to agent and producer Marty Melcher, whom she wed at 27, seemed happy and stable. Marty adopted her son, Terry, bought Doris a big house in Beverly Hills, and helped make her a superstar in movie hits like 1955’s Love Me or Leave Me and 1959’s Pillow Talk. But in private, he was very controlling of his wife and fought, often violently, with Terry. Marty even shipped the boy off to boarding school without consulting Doris. When Marty died of a sudden heart attack in 1968, Doris learned that she was deeply in debt due to his mismanagement of their finances. Marty had also signed an ironclad contract for Doris to star in a television series without her knowledge or consent. “The only thing she said to me about him was ‘Well, I sure can pick ’em,’ ” her The Doris Day Show co-star CLOSERWEEKLY.COM 23

COVER STORY

1

HER TURBULENT LOVE LIFE At 17, Doris married Al Jorden, her son Terry’s father, who suffered from untreated mental illness. George Weidler moved her to California, then abandoned her. Marty Melcher guided Doris to stardom but tried to control her every move. His death left her in debt. We were “just incompatible” Doris said of Barry Comden. “Patrick [O’Neal] was the one she said she really loved,” said Kaye Ballard.

5

Jackie Joseph tells Closer. It would take Doris years of work — and the guidance of her son, Terry, who stepped up to manage her career — to dig herself out of the financial hole Marty had dug for her.

SECRET LOVE

Doris confessed that she was in a bad place when Patrick arrived on The Doris Day Show to play her love interest in 1972. Along with her work on the series, she was in a courtroom battle with Marty’s former partner over the mishandling of her finances. Worse yet, Terry had broken both legs in a life-threatening motorcycle crash. “She was going back and forth to the hospital every day as soon as shooting was over,” recalls Jackie. “That’s when Patrick wove into the picture.” Doris fell for Patrick because “he wasn’t a father figure, as Marty had 24 May 31, 2021 CLOSER

been,” she recalled. “He was an adult, a forceful man, and if he had honest feelings for me, that is all I asked of him.” Another co-star, Kaye Ballard, remembered Patrick as “a very nice guy. I thought he would be perfect for her. He was even a vegetarian,” Kaye said, noting Doris’ deep love for animals. “He understood that.” It didn’t even really matter to Doris that he had a longtime wife back in New York. Patrick told Doris his marriage was unhappy and they only remained together for their children. “I didn’t care whether he was married or not,” admitted Doris. “I know that I am often thought of as a Pollyanna, but I’m far from it. I’m just too realistic to qualify as a Pollyanna.” After 12 months together, Peter returned to New York and his wife, but Doris would always remember him with love. “It was a per-

fectly marvelous year for me,” she said. “It was a time in my life when I badly need to be uplifted, and uplift me it did.”

QUE SERA, SERA

Doris would marry one more time, to Barry Comden, a restaurateur 12 years her junior, in 1976. “I thought he looked a lot like Patrick,” confided Kaye. Though Barry would help her set up the Doris Day Animal Foundation, they were an ill-suited couple and split in 1981 after five years of marriage. Although a lasting, supportive love never entered Doris’ life, she insisted that she had been blessed with a wonderful son, good friends and fans who remained devoted to her throughout her long life. “We can’t change the past,” she said. “I always believe things work out exactly the way they are supposed to. There is no sense in having regrets.”

want to be alone.” Ever since Greta Garbo uttered that line in Grand Hotel, it’s become an essential — and enduring — part of her mystique: the beautiful screen goddess who had no desire for attention. Back in 1927, the Swedish-born actress told Photoplay magazine, “I detest crowds, don’t like many people.” And 31 years after her death at age 84, she’s still known as the world’s most glamorous misanthrope. Yet Greta’s great-nephew Derek Reisfield remembers her very differently. “I wouldn’t call her a recluse,” Derek, whose mother, Gray, was the only daughter of Greta’s beloved brother, Sven, tells Closer in an exclusive interview. “If you look at her date books, she’s out and about, meeting people, going to dinner parties, going to people’s homes for the weekend. She was private…but for a recluse, she had a

very active social life. I forget who said it, but somebody called her the, ‘hermit about town.’” Indeed, while she clearly didn’t suffer fools gladly — especially those found in Hollywood — Greta knew how to have a good time. “When I moved to New York after school, I lived about five blocks away from her, so I would see her a lot,” Derek recalls. “[Family and friends] would all assemble at 5 for cocktails at her apartment, and then [we’d] go out to dinners or a play or whatever

The actress enjoyed hosting cocktail parties at her Manhattan apartment, where she lived for nearly 40 years.

Greta was private, but far from a recluse. She was often seen walking in her NYC neighborhood.

about Hollywood in the old days and the people she met and hung out with,” remembers Derek, who listened raptly as his aunt detailed her friendship with Charlie Chaplin (“She called him a genius”) or the director Mauritz Stiller, who met Greta at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm when she was 18 and suggested she change her last name from Gustafsson to Garbo. “He was probably the love of her life,” Derek says of Mauritz, who died of pleurisy at 45. “But she had lots of significant relationships over the years.” The most significant? Derek says it

was probably Greta’s frequent costar, John Gilbert. But it was family with whom she formed the most lasting bonds. “It was a very small family,” Derek explains. “Her sister died in her 20s, and her father died when she was 14. So it was really [Greta’s brother] my grandfather and my mother and my siblings.” While Greta tended to “feel threatened by a mob” and “would avoid big, public gatherings,” she was lively and passionate with those she trusted — and adored deep, philosophical discussions. And though she didn’t always want to be alone, Derek says, Greta did appreciate her own company. “She loved to walk,” he recalls. “She liked walking in the mountains, or on the beach, or in New York City…. She was pretty content.” —Alison Gaylin, with reporting by Lexi Ciccone CLOSERWEEKLY.COM 27

Melora Hardin

The Queen of Mean Is Back “Cruella de Vil is a fantastic character to get to play because she’s larger than life,” says Emma Stone, who portrays the fur-crazed villainess in Disney’s 101 Dalmatians prequel, Cruella. “It’s been a great experience to play around with her backstory. There are some really deep emotional things that Cruella’s dealing with that send her to the villainous darker side.” Directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya), the film takes place in London in the 1970s. “We’ve had so much fun with the costumes, hair and makeup to create her entire persona,” says Emma, who won a Best Actress Oscar for 2016’s La La Land. Emma Thompson also stars.

On The Bold Type She’s the feminist EIC of Scarlet magazine on The Bold Type. “The show is right on the wave of modern conversations,” Melora says, “but it’s also idealistic.”

They co-starred in three hit movies in the ’80s, and now Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner are reuniting for Season 3 of The Kominsky Method. “When I saw the part...it just reeked of a kind of a War of the Roses divorce, and she’s just so good,” Michael says of Kathleen, who plays his ex-wife Ruth. After all these years, the two actors still have an easy rapport. Says Kathleen: “It’s sort of like, ‘Oh, there they go again.’”

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

If you are feeling exhausted and in need of revitalization, you should consider a detox or cleanse. With Active LiverTM you have the tool to do this gently and on a daily basis.

Detox your body -

all year long E

ach day, our liver is working hard to remove waste products and toxins from processed foods, unclean air, water and even our own body. But as we get exposed to increasingly more toxins, the liver struggles to remove them all and can start storing them in our body fat. We quickly may notice the results in our energy levels, in our lack of youthful appearance – and surprisingly, on our waistlines.

UNJUNKING YOUR BODY A detox, like a water or juice fast, is an excellent way to rid the body of stored toxins, but

Th Li

&Y

it is often difficult to abide by, and involves days or even weeks of feeling tired and sick. However, there are other ways.

DETOX WITH ONE TABLET A DAY TM

Active Liver is a dietary supplement that helps promote a healthy liver and helps you detox on a daily basis – all year round. With just one tablet a day, it gently but effectively uses known herbal extracts to facilitate detoxing of the body without the “side effects”.

i tline The liver is an important fat burning organ. If the liver is sluggish or clogged with waste material, it can start building up around the waistline, and even inside the internal organs (which may lead to a fatty liver). Making sure your liver is working well will help you flush fats from the body.

Results may vary. Always read and follow instructions prior to use.

TEST YOURSELF

HEALTHY WAYS TO DETOX

FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE LIFESTYLE CHANGES TO LOSE WEIGHT AND BOOST YOUR METABOLISM

EAT CLEAN: “One negative effect of poor eating and

drinking is a broken metabolism,” says Sarah Asay, director of nutrition and product development at BistroMD. “Metabolism dysfunction may present as weight gain, increased blood pressure and cholesterol, less energy and trouble sleeping.” To recharge, start by removing foods that trigger inflammation (sugar, alcohol, caffeine and processed meats) and replace them with abundance of vegetables, nuts, wild meats and wild-caught fish, and high-quality fats like olive oil. DRINK UP: Make water — not coffee —

your first drink of the morning. “While our bodies are asleep, we go seven or more hours without any hydration,” Asay says. “By providing your body with hydration upon waking, it refreshes and energizes our cells.” TRY A CLEANSE: Cleanses can vary

greatly in terms of restrictions, duration and ingredients. Before you try one, consult your doctor. It’s important that you’re still getting key nutrients and vitamins while on it. CATCH SOME Zs: “Giving yourself a good night’s rest

is one of the best ways to detox your body and reset,” Asay says. “Sleep has been connected to weight loss, reduced cortisol levels and stress, and improved overall health.” GET MOVING: Exercising improves

blood circulation and brings oxygen and nutrients to the organs and tissues, which helps them function more effectively. So step away from your desk and go for a walk or do some jumping jacks. You’ll feel great! 44 May 31, 2021 CLOSER

DON’T STOP DREAMING The former Dukes of Hazzard star on success, life lessons and his new movie role

46 May 31, 2021 CLOSER

The Dukes of Hazzard, starring John and Tom Wopat, aired from 1979 to 1985.

I

n early 1979, two good ol’ country boys named Bo and Luke Duke took America by storm on The Dukes of Hazzard. Though these two cousins from rural Georgia were often on the wrong side of the law, audiences cheered as they sweetly outwitted the corrupt commissioner Boss Hogg and tore around in their soupedup cherry red Dodge Charger. “When I went to California to do Dukes, I was 18,” recalls John Schneider, 61, who grew up in a suburb of Atlanta and played Bo. “I had just graduated from high school.” In the years following Dukes, John has become a recording star, done theater and co-starred on other TV series, including Smallville and Tyler Perry’s The Haves and the Have Nots. Along with Marie Osmond, he is a founder of the Children’s Miracle Network. Today, he’s still acting, but he’s also a writer, producer and director. His latest film is Switched, now streaming on Pure Flix/Sony.

Do you still get recognized for your role on The Dukes of Hazzard? Oh yeah! It’s a wonderful compliment. A new generation of kids is now watching Dukes and loving it. It’s terrific. I just did a concert in North Carolina, and there were people from ages 6 to 80 in the crowd. They all love the show. Why do you think Dukes continues to resonate with fans? We became and remain part of people’s extended family. For a lot of folks, it’s

John married Alicia Allain, a film producer, in 2019.

not just a television show. It’s the lessons they learned from it or the time they spent watching episodes with their grandparents who have now passed on. We’re people they spent time with during a very important time in their lives. It’s a special show, and I’m honored to be a part of that.

What are some of your favorite memories of making the show? All of my favorite memories from Dukes are of sitting with Denver Pyle, who played Uncle Jesse. We’d talk about The Doris Day Show [which he co-starred on] and what it was like for him to work with John Ford and John Wayne. We talked a lot about life in general. He was, in every regard, like a real uncle to me. We were thick as thieves for all the years I did Dukes. Did you always want to be an actor? Oh yeah. I knew what I was supposed to be [at a young age]. My theory is that when you’re little, 6 or 7 years old, you know exactly what you are supposed to be. I started making movies with an 8-millimeter camera and doing plays. I remember telling my dad when I was maybe 12 or 13 that I was going to Hollywood to be a stuntman. Did your dad encourage you? I had a group of very well-meaning people who were very discouraging because they CLOSERWEEKLY.COM 47

HEART to heart didn’t want to see me get disappointed. My dad said, ‘Don’t you think you ought to have a plan B?’ I love him to death, but you could tell he didn’t want me to get my hopes up.

But you succeeded! I tell people now that you better get your hopes up because no one else will. I realized watching movies that was where I was supposed to be. I think a lot of people have that, but then they lose sight of it. You’re the father of three adult children. How did being a father change you? Oh, it gives you a whole different perspective on life, especially during their first 16 years. You have a tremendous responsibility to try to help them discover what they’re supposed to be and help them realize that they are very special and to help them along that path. Your wife, Alicia Allain, is a breast cancer survivor. How is she doing? She’s doing great. She is her own biggest advocate. She still sees her doctors and she’s on the Keto for Cancer diet, but she looks at it as a maintenance program. She’s remarkable — tenacious too. That’s why we’re together. We call ourselves the team to beat. How did you fare during the pandemic? We looked at sequestering as a learning

experience of how to get things done regardless. Because of the pandemic, I wrote a movie, which Alicia produced. We shot the movie, I edited it, and we released it and made money back. All of that in less than a year! You just have to go for it.

Tell us about your new movie, Switched. KEEP I think this movie is so clever and so timely. I was one of FIGHTING those kids — the heavy kid “One of my core beliefs is that if you don’t find any with the inhaler who got opposition, you are on the bullied — you know, the wrong track,” says John. nasty stuff that happens to “I honestly look at kids. Now people are playing opposition as a good supposedly harmless pranks thing.” on other people and then posting them to social media, where they never go away. So when I saw this script, I thought they were tapping into something we should be talking about. So it’s about two girls, a popular one and a bullied one, who switch places? Yes, the girls switch places — it’s like the genie-in-a-bottle thing where we don’t know why it happens. I think it’s because God wanted them to see what the other side was like. It should spur a lot of indepth conversation. Do you do social media? I have my Facebook page and a YouTube channel, and I read the comments. I don’t

What’s the greatest lesson you’ve learned? I think we are all made to do something. There is something we are better at than anybody in the world because God designed us that way. Our job is to find out what that is. Do you ever think about retiring? Oh no! Retire? I could not imagine. We keep making the movies we love. I write every day. Their Road to

n a scene from 1942’s Road to Morocco, Bing Crosby confesses his affection for his buddy Orville, played by Bob Hope. “I guess in my own way, I sorta love you,” says the crooner just seconds before an amorous camel stretches through the shrubbery to plant a wet kiss on Bob’s cheek. “All right, but you don’t have to slobber all over me!” quips Bob. Before the word bromance or the rise of cinematic sequels, Bing and Bob starred in seven sweetly funny Road to... movies that made them two of Hollywood’s biggest stars. The films followed a formula: The pair would get into trouble, wisecracks would fly, Bing would sing, and Bob would talk directly to the audience. “They were

the most lucrative franchise in movie history,” says Gary Giddins, author of Bing Crosby: A Pocketful of Dreams and Bing Crosby: Swinging on a Star. The pair met in New York when Bob, a then up-and-coming comedian, was invited to emcee one of Bing’s shows in 1933. “They hit it off and used to take breaks together where they’d trade jokes,” says Giddins. “They tried the best bits out on stage and became a big hit with the audiences.” That chemistry was still intact when Paramount Pictures teamed them up for Road to Singapore, which became one of the biggest hits of 1940. But success didn’t make them immediate best friends. “They were very different men. Bing wasn’t

PARTNERS TO PALS

“They would do ad-lib routines together,” says Zoglin of their shared roots in New York’s vaudeville.

The Road to Singapore, which costarred Dorothy Lamour (next to Bob) was the sixth biggest movie of 1940.

gregarious and didn’t like the trappings of stardom, while Bob loved them,” says Richard Zoglin, author of Hope: Entertainer of the Century. “I think, privately, Bob felt that Bing was a little aloof. He said, ‘Bing and his wife never even invited me and Dolores to dinner.’ ” On the set, there was also a friendly competition to come up with the best zingers. “They each had their own writers,” says Giddins, although “they never had a fight.”

A FINE BROMANCE

It wasn’t until the filming of their last road comedy, 1962’s The Road to Hong Kong, that their friendship really blossomed. “They went to London to do the film and lived in the same house with their wives,” says Gid-

dins. The co-stars began playing golf together. “Bob’s wife, Dolores, said that was when they first realized how much they really loved each other,” says Zoglin. “From that time on, they were very, very close.” Bing and Bob had been discussing another movie, The Road to the Fountain of Youth, when Bing died of a sudden heart attack in 1977. “Bob was really broken up about it,” says Zoglin. Too emotional to appear on stage, he canceled his live performance that night for the first time in his career. “If friends could have been made for each other, I would have asked for one just like Bing,” Bob said. “I miss him.” —Louise A. Barile, with reporting by Amanda Champagne-Meadows

JACQUELINE BISSET

My Memories of MAKING OF 1968’S SMASH HIT BULLITT

J

acqueline Bisset recalls the first time she met Steve McQueen. “My first impression was that he’s terribly handsome,” she says. “Steve was [also] quiet, charming and thoughtful. I wouldn’t say shy exactly, but not introverted, either.” As Steve’s love interest in Bullitt, the 1968 crime drama that is part of the 2021 Turner Classic Movies Film Festival, the actress, then 23, shared several pivotal scenes with Steve — and participated in some of the film’s influential car scenes. “I knew I was going to have to drive Steve myself. I was nervous about that,” admits Jacqueline, 76, who was aware of Steve’s reputation as a passionate, nearly professional driver, who did many of his own stunts. “I don’t think he was relaxed at all when I was driving him,” she confides. “He said to me, ‘You are a very good driver — for a girl!’ I was thrilled. I mean, think about it: Me, driving Steve McQueen? This huge star? But I did it.” 54 May 31, 2021 CLOSER

Jacqueline was also astonished by the car chase scenes in Bullitt, which are among the most memorable in film history because they used San Francisco’s winding streets. “I was astounded that a car could do what those cars did on the streets and those hills,” she says. “I thought it looked terribly dangerous, but it was exciting.”

HAIL THE KING

“I don’t mind action movies to watch, but I don’t particularly want to be in them!” says Jacqueline.

They didn’t become lifelong to hear of Steve’s death from heart failure after a bout with cancer in 1980. “When Steve became unwell and he died, I remember thinking, ‘God, what a terrible waste. He was so talented,’” Jacqueline recalls. “He was charming, attentive and helpful. He had a lot of patience.... People loved Steve. He was the King of Cool for a reason.” –Reporting by Amanda Champagne-Meadows

“He was a big star...people would just go nuts.” —Jacqueline Bisset on Steve McQueen
