on’t get us wrong, we’ve absolutely loved sitting outside under dripping pub umbrellas, freezing our tits off while sipping a glass of rosé through chattering teeth, but the go-ahead to actually be able to sit inside and quaff a cocktail couldn’t have come sooner. With pubs, restaurants, theatres and cinemas opening up across the UK – as well as government permission being given to (cautiously) hug our friends and family – celebs have been out in force, filling
the seats of every trendy restaurant in the country. Perhaps that’s why we can’t get any bookings… Vicky Pattison was straight out on the toon – well, Wapping – to celebrate with cocktails, wine and delicious looking grub. “Nature is healing,” she captioned one of her Instagram photos, before summing up the thoughts of the nation with, “So bloody happy to be back indoors”. Amanda Holden opted for her usual casual look for a visit to the cinema with pal Ashley Roberts, although we imagine a lot of popcorn got lost in those dresses. Louise Redknapp, along
with Myleene Klass and her daughters, were back in London’s West End for the first night of theatres opening. Essex pals Ferne McCann and Billie Faiers took full advantage of being able to pose next to each other for Instagram, and Ferne said how lovely it was to be able to cuddle her bestie after so long. Strictly star Nicola Adams and her girlfriend Ella Baig got straight on the cocktails to celebrate, Michelle Keegan was thrilled to be able to enjoy a drink with her jacket off, and Charlotte Crosby was lucky enough to be able to celebrate her 31st birthday indoors at

Loved-up Katie’s sunshine vacay She and Carl were on the first flights out of here emember holidays? Us neither. But Katie Price has spent the past week reminding us big time, as she lives it up in Portugal with fiancé Carl Woods. The loved-up pair were among the first Brits to leave the country last week as airports reopened, and they wasted no time in sharing a thousand shots of pools, blue skies and nights out. “It’s so nice to have some sunshine,” mum-of-five Katie, 43,

declared in a sunny Instagram video, as Carl, 31, called their villa “unreal” and “beautiful”. He went on to share a slightly pink-faced selfie, gushing, “Sunshine, great company and bang-on food.” The couple, who have been dating since June 2020, seemed to be embracing the romance following their recent engagement. They both posted pics of Katie sitting on Carl’s lap, with the former glamour model captioning hers, “Summer loving,” with an engagement ring emoji, while the car dealer wrote, “When

you find the one, don’t let her go,” adding the slightly territorial hashtag, “#shesmine”. Katie also gushed over a picture of her toyboy, commenting, “I have to say @carljwoods is just so handsome and mine.” She later filmed him for Insta-stories, asking him, “Do you know how good-looking you are? Jesus Christ, you’re… look at me! You’re so… Girls, he is fit!” Although Portugal is on the current list of safe countries, Katie and Carl weren’t taking any risks, as they have already had their first vaccine shots and followed rules to wear masks at the airport and on the plane. And no doubt Katie was also bikini-ready after revealing last year that she had discovered a new love of waxing to get rid of any unwanted hair. Fully vaxxed ’n’ waxed, she’s already said that she and Carl are trying for a baby – her sixth child – so, no doubt, she’s hoping that her first trip abroad this year leaves her returning home with more than a suntan… Q KATE RANDALL

The 31 year old was spotted beaming on several dates with entrepreneur Jude Taylor last week. The new couple walked hand-in-hand after a night at VIP club 180 The Strand in central London, and were also seen doing a bit of pavement boozing. T
here’s no denying Holly Willoughby lives a charmed life – happily married with three kids, millions in the bank, and one of the most coveted jobs in TV. But that may all be about to fall apart, as Holly holds crisis talks with ITV about her future on This Morning. The star is currently fighting a legal battle with her old management team, who are demanding a cut of all her future earnings – including her contract with This Morning. We’re told this, along with other factors, has made a stressed Holly reevaluate her life and question her future on the show. “Holly really feels at breaking point right now and wonders if all this stress is worth it,” our insider says. “Obviously, she loves her job and working with one of her best friends
presenter, and Holly definitely has a wild side to her. Sometimes, she feels as though she has to act a certain way. She catches glimpses of herself and worries that she’s grown up too fast. She wonders if it’s time to step away from daytime telly to have more time to spend with her friends and family.” The TV star has been presenting the popular programme alongside Phil since September 2009, replacing veteran Fern Britton. And after 12 years, sources say that it might be time for a change. “Holly feels that if she doesn’t bite the bullet and take the risk of leaving now, then she’s never going to do it,” says the insider. “She doesn’t want to get stuck in that lane. We’re told, “ITV are desperate to keep Holly on the show. rince William hit out at the BBC last week for failing his mother Princess Diana, and fuelling the “fear, paranoia and isolation” she’d suffered in the final years of her life. He also spoke of his “indescribable sadness” after an independent inquiry led by Lord Dyson released its findings, saying the corporation had covered up “deceitful behaviour” by journalist Martin Bashir to obtain his 1995 Panorama interview with Diana, in which she famously said there were “three of us” in her marriage to Prince Charles. In his furious video response, which he filmed outside Kensington Palace, William said that BBC employees had “lied and used fake documents to obtain the interview with my mother; made lurid and false claims about the royal family, which played on her fears and fuelled paranoia; displayed woeful

incompetence when investigating complaints and concerns about the programme; were evasive in their reporting to the media, and covered up what they knew from their internal investigation.” He said that the interview should never be aired again, adding, “In an era of fake news, public service broadcasting and a free press have never been more important. These failings, identified by investigative journalists, not only let my mother down and my family down, they let the public down, too.” In a separate statement, Prince Harry also spoke out, saying, “Our mother was an incredible woman who dedicated her life to service. She was resilient, brave, and unquestionably honest. The ripple effect of a culture of exploitation and unethical practices ultimately took her life.” Q

W
e thought he’d dropped the atom bomb back in March, when he and wife Meghan Markle sat down with Oprah Winfrey for that infamous interview – which he doubled-down on earlier this month, in an equally-explosive podcast appearance. But these were just Prince Harry’s warning shots before he launched his ultimate attack on the royal family, which he did last week in his and Oprah’s new documentary series on mental health, The Me You Can’t See. In conversations with Oprah and a therapist, a raw and emotional Harry accused his family of “neglect” and “attempting to smear” Meghan, and claimed they’d refused to help the Sussexes when Meghan felt suicidal – among a series of other jaw-dropping revelations. “Certainly, now I will never be bullied into silence,” said Harry, as he told Oprah how he and Meghan had asked “The Firm” for help as they felt targeted by the media before stepping down as senior royals. “I thought my family
would help, but every single ask, request, warning – whatever it is – just got met with total silence, total neglect. We spent four years trying to make it work. We did everything that we possibly could to stay, but Meghan was struggling.” Harry then spoke movingly about his wife’s struggles, revealing she’d told him how she’d planned to take her own life
‘I will never be bullied into silence’ while she was pregnant with their son Archie, now two, but had stopped herself because it would be “unfair” to him following the death of his mother in 1997. Her heartbreaking admission came as the pair were due at an event, which they did attend – something Harry said he now regrets. He told Oprah, “I’m somewhat ashamed of the way that I dealt with [it]... We had a quick cuddle and then we had to get
changed to jump in a convoy with a police escort and drive to the Royal Albert Hall for a charity event. Then step out into a wall of cameras and pretend as though everything’s OK.” It was the royal family’s alleged refusal to help the couple, Harry said, that pushed them to relocate to the US last year and speak out about their unfair treatment. In the documentary, he also says a therapist told him that he reverted back to being a child whenever he got angry or upset. He added that, when Meghan made him seek help, he initially felt “ashamed and defensive”. He also accused the royals of trying to “smear” Meghan with bullying claims again in the run-up to the first Oprah interview. “Because of their headlines, and that combined effort of The Firm and the media to smear [Meghan], I was woken up in the middle of the night to her crying into her pillow, because she doesn’t want to wake me up because I’m already carrying too much,” he said. “That’s heartbreaking. I held her. We talked. She cried and she cried and she cried.” Q CHARLOTTE OLIVER

And last week, Stacey Solomon stripped off as part of the Loose Women Body Stories campaign to promote “keeping it real” on social media. Stacey – alongside other panellists from the ITV daytime show – are aiming to encourage fans to embrace their real bodies and be more aware of how edited social media pictures can be. Stacey, 31, spoke about how important it is to be kind to yourself, and not get worked up about how you look or compare your appearance to others. “I think every day you have to give yourself a bit of credit and say as many nice things to yourself as you would horrible,” she said. “It’s about trying to flip it on its head. I don’t think that, for most people, you’re 100 per cent confident all of the time. It’s

he often speaks about the power of a positive mindset, but Natasha Hamilton has opened up about the extent of her own mental health battles for the first time. Appearing on the Mindkite Podcast, the former Atomic Kitten singer revealed she’d suffered a “full mental breakdown” after giving birth to her fourth child six years ago, and ended up in psychiatric care. The 38 year old said she’d suffered postnatal depression following the birth of first son Josh in 2002 (she’s Tash with her also mum to Harry, fiancé Charles 16, Alfie, ten, and Ella, six.) But it was after she split from exhusband Riad Erraji in 2013 that things went from bad to worse. “I was married for seven years,
got divorced, lost the plot a little bit, went through some mental health ups and downs, and then I had my daughter in 2014,” she revealed. “When I had my little girl, I had a full breakdown and I was under the care of a mental health team, under the care of a psychiatrist. It was then, I was just like, ‘We can’t keep doing this, Tash. You need to sort your s**t out.’” Natasha, who joined Atomic Kitten at the age of 16, still sings with the band alongside her long-time bandmate Liz McClarnon, but also dedicates a lot of her time to health and wellness. She recently revealed she’d qualified as an “unconscious mind therapist”, saying that it has “changed [her] life”. t’s been a long – and at times frustrating – four years for Wayne and Coleen Rooney, as they built their dream home from scratch. But finally, after numerous setbacks, the couple – who have sons Kai, 11, Klay, eight, Kit, five, and threeyear-old Cass – are ready to become Lord and Lady of the manor, as they can now move into their £20million mega-mansion in the Cheshire countryside. And we’re very jealous. The 40-acre estate comes with its own full-length football pitch, two man-made fishing lakes, stables for 14 horses, an indoor swimming pool, an orangery, a sauna, a snooker room complete with bar, a cinema and, most importantly, a wine cellar. And understandably, Coleen can’t wait to move in, following her mini break to Gleneagles in

ebekah Vardy was the picture of a proud wife last week, as she watched her Leicester City footballing hero husband Jamie Vardy help his team take home the FA Cup. It’s the pinnacle of an epic year for the former model – and it’s now basically impossible for anyone to deny Becky’s new reign as queen of the WAGs. “Seeing Jamie win the cup was such an amazing moment,” says a source close to 39-year-old Becky, who is mum to Sofia, six, Finley, four, and Olivia, one, with Jamie, 34, as well as Meghan, 16, and Taylor, 11, from previous relationships. “It was wonderful to be back at Wembley supporting him in person. She has never been one to get all glammed up for a game, because she likes to sit with the fans and cheer the team

It was incredible to be there and really proved to everyone beyond any doubt that Becky is now queen of the WAGs.” It’s officially been the year of the Vardys, after Jamie’s epic on-pitch success and Becky’s popular turn on Dancing On Ice. She’s also holding her own against former WAG queen Coleen Rooney, with their court battle still at stalemate following Coleen’s infamous Wagatha Christie Instagram post back in October 2019. We’re told, “Many footballers’ partners hate being called WAGs, but Becky is just so happy to be where she is – on top and supporting Jamie. There are no words to describe the lifelong bond that I now share with you.” Naomi was soon flooded with congratulations from her A-list friends, with Kim Kardashian commenting, “Beautiful angel.” Designer Marc Jacobs wrote, “Oh my God!!!!! Today is the day?? How absolutely incredible. How lucky she is and how lucky you are! What a wonderful Mother you will be. Blessings all around.” Guardians Of The Galaxy actress Zoe Saldana commented, “Oh my goodness congrats lady! What a blessing!” While Rita Ora wrote,
“No one deserves this more.” Naomi’s mum Valerie also shared her joy, posting the same touching shot and writing in the caption, “Congratulations to my daughter Naomi on the birth of her daughter. I’m beyond thrilled as I’ve waited a long time to be a grandmother.” Naomi replied touchingly, “We love you, Mum.” Amid the congratulations, some fans did speculate whether the superstar had used a surrogate, given her age and recent pictures showing no sign of a bump. One tweeted, “I can’t help but wonder, was it a surrogate or adoption, ’cause Naomi wasn’t preggo… it’s still a blessing regardless, though.” Another asked, “Did Naomi Campbell carry her baby or have a surrogate? Cause if she carried, she is a superwoman.” A third added, “Naomi Campbell having a baby at 50 is inspiring whether she had a surrogate or not. She does everything at her own pace, in her own way and by her own rules.” The model – who now lives in America, and is thought to be in a new relationship – is well known

She has also done a lot of charity work with orphanages and has spoken openly about wanting kids. “I think about having children all the time,” she said in 2017. “But now, with the way science is, I think I can do it when I want.” The following year, she said, “I’d love to have kids. I don’t discount anything in life. LILY: ‘I LOVE MY FAKE PAMMY BOOBS’ And who can blame her? Lily sans chest piece
M
ost of us went through the chicken fillets in bra stage as teenagers – but apparently not all of us got over it. Lily James is currently reliving those glory days, starring as Pamela Anderson in a new TV series – complete with the DD boobs Pammy was so famous for. And insiders say the actress is enjoying her new chest a little too much, parading around in them on – and off – set. “Lily’s having a blast getting into character and playing dress-up with the fake chest piece,” say sources close to the 32-year-old Cinderella star. “The boobs really help her get into character and she loves walking around in them, especially as naturally she has a more modest bust.” Lily has opened up about her changing shape in the past, telling Vogue in 2016, “I go through phases of exercise, and I do begin to feel bad if I’m not moving my body and stretching. My boobs get really big when I don’t exercise.” It follows the release of stunning new pictures from the set of Hulu show Pam & Tommy, showing

Lily posing on the beach in the iconic red swimsuit from Baywatch. The much-anticipated series, which also stars actor Sebastian Stan as Pammy’s bad boy ex-husband, Tommy Lee, will focus on the pair’s whirlwind romance back in the nineties. Pamela, now 53, and Tommy, 58, met in 1995, marrying on a beach in Cancun only four days later. An explicit video from their honeymoon was later leaked and went on to become the stuff of internet legend – though the
‘Lily’s having a blast getting into character’ marriage itself only lasted three years. Those close to Pamela, who has children Brandon, 24, and Dylan, 23, with the Mötley Crüe drummer, have shared mixed feelings about the biopic. One friend of the blonde star claimed Pammy wouldn’t be watching “this godawful show, absolutely not, never”, calling it a “cheap knock-off.” And last week, singer
Courtney Love said on Facebook that she found the project to be “so f**king outrageous… [the sex tape] destroyed my friend Pamela’s life. Utterly. And shame on Lily James, whoever the f**k she is.” Despite conflicted feelings on the show, there will no doubt be huge interest in seeing the Downton Abbey star’s transformation up close, when the show airs later this year. One fan tweeted, “Can’t wait for this”, while another said, “So many great names. I’m hyped.” Many more online fans couldn’t get over how much Lily has transformed into Pam, writing, “Incredible casting!” With another adding, “These spot the difference games are getting harder.” ELIZABETH RYAN I’m still always here

ho’s that rapping at the window? Who’s that knocking at your door? Why it’s only Victoria Beckham, on your doorstep with the latest VB fashions ready to pop straight into your wardrobe! OK, a disclaimer – Victoria Beckham is highly unlikely to turn up at your door selling her wares, but you can now pay an extra £15 to have your Victoria Beckham threads delivered to your home with the fashion brand’s exclusive concierge service. The service – which currently only serves Londoners – was announced on the 47 year old’s website, which explains, “The service brings the in-store shopping experience to you. Order multiple sizes, styles or take the opportunity to try something a little out of your comfort zone. We’ll
then return the pieces you don’t want, and swiftly complete the payment for the pieces you do, all from the comfort of your own home.” Fashion fans will also be pleased to know the service comes with your very own style concierge on hand for advice and alterations. Each item is steamed, hung in a garment bag and transported on a rail in the VB van. And while the service is available 24/7, the more eco-conscious among us can be relieved that, “The service is carbon neutral, too, and for every appointment booked a tree is planted.” Victoria’s fashion brand has struggled since its inception in 2008, reporting significant losses over the last seven years. Here’s hoping that her new garms-onwheels offering will boost sales.

ere’s hoping Ariana Grande will never have to say “Thank you, next” again after the pop star surprised everyone by announcing she had married fiancé Dalton Gomez last week. A representative for the couple confirmed the news in a statement, saying, “They got married. It was tiny and intimate – less than 20 people. The room was so happy and full of love. The couple and both families couldn’t be happier.” The pair apparently tied the knot at Ariana’s $6.75m house in Montecito, California, with a source saying, “Both Ari and Dalton love Montecito. They spend a lot of time there. It seems only natural that they would get married at Ari’s beautiful and historic house.” Ariana bought the Tudor-style house – reconstructed from two
18th-century barns originally from Surrey – from TV host Ellen DeGeneres in May 2020, just a couple of months after she began dating Dalton. After quarantining together in Los Angeles in the early days of their relationship, they went

public when Dalton, 25, appeared in the music video alongside Ariana for her and Justin Bieber’s song Stuck With U in May. Previous to Dalton, Ariana had been engaged to Saturday Night Live star Pete Davidson. They started dating, got engaged, and split up all in the space of six months. During their relationship, she also had to deal with the death of ex-boyfriend Mac Miller, who died from an accidental overdose in 2018.

In December 2020, Ariana, 27, announced her engagement to her estate agent beau in a post captioned, “Forever and then some”, which showed off her huge diamond ring. And, clearly besotted, the singer’s latest album was filled with tributes to him. From romantic lyrics like, “Others that I’ve had had to impress me before, but I knew you were the real thing, when you walked through the door”, to more racy ones, “You might think I’m crazy, the way I’ve been craving, if I put it quite plainly, just give me them babies”. A source close to the couple said, “Ari’s family is very happy. Everyone loves Dalton. He is great for Ari. This next phase of her life has been very quiet and uneventful in a good way. They are very happy that she’s married Dalton.”

espite being at “The Happiest Place on Earth”, Chrissy Teigen cut a miserable figure as she walked around Disneyland with husband John Legend and three-year-old son Miles last week. The trip came days after Chrissy was forced to apologise after tweets from a decade ago resurfaced, in which she verbally abused reality star Courtney Stodden – in one, she told the then-16 year old to take their own life. Other mean and abusive tweets to other celebrities also emerged – and now an insider tells us Chrissy is terrified that there are more revelations to come. “She’s walking around in a total fog right now – she can’t believe
Why Chrissy fears there’s worse to come The under-fire star has been snubbed by Hollywood what’s happening to her,” we’re told. “It’s the worst case scenario possible, with all her haters uniting to punish her for her past mistakes as harshly and publicly as possible. She keeps saying it’s like a bad dream, but when she goes online and reads what’s being said, it seems very real and creates a whole new scale of panic. The worst part for Chrissy is knowing there could be more to come. She keeps thinking about all the stupid things she might have said in the past, dreading that another wave of revelations or historic tweets will resurface. She’s hoping it all dies down eventually, but that doesn’t seem likely.” The 35-year-old model and cookbook author – who is also mum to five-year-old daughter Luna – admitted to being an “attention-seeking troll” in the past and said she was working

Many of Chrissy’s detractors have pointed out her hypocrisy, as the model has always spoken out against online hatred – and even briefly left Twitter earlier this year, due to the negativity she said she faced. ome things may be Pure And Simple, but running a 19-hour marathon isn’t one of them. So, big props to Suzanne Shaw, who completed a massive 60-mile challenge last week, raising £8k for charity in the process. The former Hear’Say singer, 39, said she was “over the moon” to have reached the finishing line in Surrey at 5pm on Wednesday, having set off the previous evening at 10pm, but added that, “It hasn’t really sunk in yet that it is over!” The mum of two had decided to undertake the ultramarathon to raise money for mental health charity Samaritans (call them on 116 123 for free, confidential advice 24/7), after recently opening up about her

own mental health battles. Back in March, she said, “I’ve struggled with depression and anxiety for more than 18 years. But it was only recently that I felt ready to open up about it because I wanted things to change.” Having never run before in her life, she said she’d recently found it to be an amazing form of therapy. It wasn’t just Suzanne clocking up some serious miles. Last Wednesday, Ryan Thomas completed his mammoth ten marathons in ten days challenge, raising more than £150k for mental health charity CALM. The actor had kept his followers updated as he walked one marathon per day from London to Manchester (262 miles in total), which he’d timed to coincide with mental health awareness week. Speaking to heat before he set off, he explained, “Individually and together, we can all make a tiny difference. If I can change one person’s life and save it, then I’ve done a good job.” Q

playing U2. We put so much effort into it – we made Lisa take drum lessons and she actually learned how to play them. C: And I played triangle… M: And it was an incredible thing, but the scene got cut! No! Why? M: Because it didn’t work. But I really hope they let us release it – maybe as a social media thing, because it was really fun and funny. It’s so amazing that we got Lisa Kudrow to learn drums and then cut the scene. Series one was on Channel 4 in this country, whereas series two is on Netflix. Do you like the idea of viewers binge-watching the whole thing in one go? M: I really hope people watch it all in one go – as one piece, almost. That would be amazing, and that’s how it’s intended to be watched, I think. C: It’s got such a lovely arc,
‘We got Lisa Kudrow to learn the drums – and then cut the scene’ so that was different – it was like some kind of weird social experiment, but it was really fun. C: And, luckily, we do get on really well, because I don’t think we could have done it if we didn’t. M: I couldn’t have done that with another actor I don’t get on well with, because we were together a lot. And at the end of every day, we only had one option and that was to sit on the couch. C: Yeah, we watched a lot of Below Deck… M: And we did a lot of scary films. Scream… C: Oh yeah, we definitely
sure it would have been possible. We also played a lot of music together, which was one of the nicest things about it. I play electric keyboard and Mae plays guitar, so we did a lot of jamming. Amazing. Are you tempted to form some kind of band? You could get Lisa Kudrow on drums… C: Well, it’s funny you should say that… M: It is funny you should say that, because there was a scene that got cut from the show where we did have a band with Mae’s parents, and Phil and Mae and George

and it’s so thoughtful and well thought through. I think from episode one of series one, Mae and Joe thought about where we’d get to in the very end and that is so satisfying. M: Yeah, we always knew it was just going to be two seasons, and we knew where we wanted Mae and George to end up. You name-check British romcom legend Richard Curtis at one point – is his stuff an influence? M: Yeah, we liked the idea of paying homage to that genre – which can be so satisfying – but also subverting it with a kind of realism, reflecting how those situations often are. There’s a running theme about the characters not wanting to label themselves as one kind of sexuality or gender – is that important to you? M: Yeah. Lots of different things can be true at once, and I think both characters find, as I have in

makes it quite weird to end the series and know there’s not going to be any more. I’ve just sort of unearthed all this stuff and I’ve got all these floating questions, so now I’ve got to write something else where I sort it out, you know? Were you ever tempted to call the character something else to distance your real self? M: Yeah. Well, the character was always going to be me, but initially, I did fight to have a different name, and I wanted it to be slightly more removed. But I’m so glad I didn’t, I think, even though it makes it quite stressful, particularly when stuff gets written about it and someone says stuff like, “Mae sucks!” Not that it happens often… C: That’s mainly me – I troll her a lot. M: Sometimes, I think it might be nice to be that one step removed, but it would be dishonest because the character is so close to me.

Everyone would be like, “What are you doing?” Because it so clearly is me. So, have you been watching Charlotte in Taskmaster? M: Not only have I been watching Charlotte in Taskmaster, I’ve been rewatching her in Ghosts, as well. I find it very soothing. C: It is a very soothing show. M: And I’ve been watching Taskmaster and texting Charlotte about her performance. Did you have any worries about doing Taskmaster, Charlotte? C: Yes, I did, for sure. But then I thought, “Why not have a go?” And it’s such a great show, everyone on it is so brilliant. It has a very intense following, as well. It was really nice meeting the others, although it happened during lockdown and my brain had really left the building after four months of sitting on the floor on my own at home. What was your favourite task? C: My favourite was the first one, because it felt like true Taskmaster – having to get a frozen banana into a wine bottle full of jelly and Vaseline. I thought, “This is peak Taskmaster and I am in!” Q

my life [Mae identifies as non-binary], labels around sexuality and gender to be a huge source of anxiety and pressure, and often put on me externally through being a public person, I guess. But then, on the other hand, in the end, Mae is getting comfortable with the term “non-binary” , which can be really liberating. I think it’s quite liberating for George, as well. It’s mostly about how the labels other people put on you are always quite claustrophobic and stressful. C: I think it’s about navigating yourself through a world that is – exactly as Mae is saying – very binary, and decides who you are before you maybe even have had
a chance to think about it. M: Yes, in the fraught public conversation around identity politics and stuff, there’s not a lot of room for nuance, fluidity and “Ask us uncertainty, and anything” that’s what we’re trying to get across. Did this show help you figure yourself out in a way? M: Yeah. In real time! And often, the dialogue in the show and what the character says is stuff that I haven’t said out loud before or said to my closest friends, so that’s quite strange… and maybe not healthy. [Laughs.] C: It sounds mad when you put it like that. M: Yeah. But that’s particularly true of this season and the stuff my character is still grappling with. [With the show], there has been a lot of self-exploration in conjunction with therapy, and that

ELLEN:
FEATURE
The end of an era The rise and fall of the world’s biggest talk-show host #45
F
or an entire global generation, The Ellen DeGeneres Show has been the pinnacle of chat shows, with its host becoming arguably more famous than most of her guests. With over 2,400 celebrity interviews under her belt, 61 Emmy Awards for the show itself, and an estimated net worth of over $370m, you can’t get much higher than Ellen DeGeneres. But from such a dizzying height, there’s only one way to go. Just two weeks ago, Ellen announced that the next season of the
daytime talk show – an annoyingly unsatisfying 19th season – will be her last. The show has changed countless lives (not least Ellen’s), donating more than $70m to charity and around $300m in audience giveaways, but after accusations of a toxic workplace rocked the 63 year old last year, is she leaving her greatest achievement behind with a sour taste in her mouth?
TOXIC CULTURE In the opening monologue for a recent episode
of her talk show, Ellen announced that season 19 would be her last. She told her audience, “The past 18 years have changed my life and I am forever grateful to all of you for watching, for laughing, for dancing, and sometimes crying. This show has been the greatest experience of my life and I owe it all to you.” She revealed that she had “thought a lot” about the decision to end the show, and that in the end her instincts told her “it was time”. But many have questioned the timing of her decision, considering it came not long after

multiple accounts of a “toxic work culture” at the NBC show. In July 2020, Buzzfeed News posted an exposé into the alleged bullying that went on behind-the-scenes of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, using interviews with former staff members. “That ‘Be kind’ bullshit only happens when the cameras are on. It’s all for show,” one former employee said of the motto Ellen has become known for over the years. “I know they give money to people and help them out, but it’s for show.” Another past employee explained that she eventually left her job at the show after constant comments and microaggressions relating to her race. And one directly called out Ellen herself. “If she wants to have

‘The “Be kind” only happens on camera’ her own show and have her name on the show title, she needs to be more involved to see what’s going on. I think the executive producers surround her and tell her, ‘Things are going great, everybody’s happy,’ and she just believes that. But it’s her responsibility to go beyond that.”
REPERCUSSIONS At the time, the show’s executive producers – Ed Glavin, Mary Connelly, and Andy Lassner – responded to the accusations, saying that they were taking them seriously and that the responsibility for the day-to-day running of the show was down to them. However, Ellen was eventually forced to speak out herself, and in an open letter to her employees, said, “I’ve not been able to stay on top of everything
“What, this old multi-million-dollar mansion?”
and relied on others to do their jobs as they knew I’d want them done. Clearly some didn’t. That will now change, and I’m committed to ensuring this does not happen again.” After an investigation, Ed Glavin was allegedly let go, and there were promises that things would improve, but a recent interview showed that Ellen was deeply rattled by the accusations. “At first, I didn’t believe it because I know how happy everybody is here and how every guest talks about, ‘Man, you have a great place here. Of all the talk shows I’ve done, everyone here is so happy.’ That’s all I’ve ever heard,” she said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter . Critics later pointed out that the brief time high-profile celebrity guests spent on the show probably gave no indication of the experience of staff members. Ellen’s jovial

attitude took a real hit, as she explained, “My whole being is about making people happy. And with the talk show, all I cared about was spreading kindness and compassion, and everything I stand for was being attacked. So, it destroyed me, honestly. I’d be lying if I said it didn’t. And it makes me really sad that there’s so much joy out there from negativity.” It seems logical that the detrimental reveal of behind the curtain of the show would be cause to cancel, but Ellen went on to say that if that was the case, she would have stopped last year. But with her contract coming to an end in 2022 anyway, and ratings for the show declining, it seems more like the decision was made for Ellen to bow out semigraciously while she can.

FRIENDS IN HIGH PLACES Ellen loves to show off her roster of A-list BFFs, and they don’t come much cooler than Michelle Obama. In 2016, Ellen and the First Lady visited a CVS supermarket and caused plenty of havoc.
NEVER HAVE THEY EVER Ellen always gave the people what they want, asking One Direction if they’ve ever been skinny dipping and attempting to get Harry Styles to spill the tea on his ex, Taylor Swift.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN She had a tradition of stitching up her executive producer Andy Lassner by sending him to a haunted house every Halloween. In 2016, he and Ariana Grande almost screamed the house down.
OH MY SLOTH Seeing Kristen Bell watching herself melt down over the appearance of a sloth at her birthday party is still a fantastic viewing experience. She even tears up when Ellen pretends there’s a sloth in the studio.

Ellen’s infamous Dakota Johnson interview
Regardless of how she goes out, Ellen’s TV journey is something to be admired. Already a successful sitcom star, Ellen risked her career by coming out as gay – alongside her character – in 1997. Ratings for the sitcom bombed, and it was cancelled by the end of the season. But after six years of emotional turbulence and some truly hard graft, Ellen had her own daytime talk show. The show would go on to become famous for its A-list guests, hilarious games, heartfelt real-life stories, and the sheer joy of its host. An appearance on it had the power to make celebrities overnight, and its legacy will continue in multiple successful spin-off series. There’s no denying Ellen has changed lives by bringing her huge spotlight to those most in need and we’re pretty certain she won’t disappear from our TV screens for long. For now, we’ll just be rewatching that awkward Dakota Johnson interview ad infinitum. Scan the picture above to see it for yourself. Q

We’re big supporters of any brand that advocates for “real beauty”. Dove does just that – and they’ve now partnered with our fave gal Lizzo, a woman who unapologetically owns her beauty. Their latest campaign is the Self-Esteem Project, which aims to get women talking about unrealistic ideals. “People are struggling with their self-image more than ever,” says Lizzo. “This is amplified by the pressure to show digitally distorted versions of ourselves, reinforcing the idea that our beauty in real life is not good enough. Style it up to work for you – remember what you want to flatter or flaunt, and make your “best bits” the focal point of your outfit. Think it’s not for you? We’re here to show you how to wear the trend, no matter what your shape or size. Plus, you can scan this page to shop our looks and see our styling videos!
MAKE IT WORK FOR YOU Don’t feel you have to go head to toe – team your print with bold colours, classic black or denim, and it’ll instantly make the look easier to wear. If you want to emphasise your waist or create the illusion of an hourglass
shape, try styles that cinch in, like wrap dresses. Or simply add a belt. To balance out your shape, draw the eye away from the area you’d rather not focus on – for example, with asymmetric hems or fluted styles.

“This skirt is one of my faves – it really works hard! I’ve gone for a more chilled look and teamed mine with a fun tee, turning up the arms for a more streamlined shape. Gucci-esque platforms add a touch of more-is-more, but this look would also be lush with chunky trainers.”

“I’m all about dressing up my leopard print, so I opted for this matching top and skirt combo. The wrap skirt cinches in my waist, while tucking in the cami keeps the look streamlined. I’m also all for teaming everything with heels, but stuck to a neutral tone, so I’m not OTT.”

“I never would have thought a wrap skirt could be turned into a dress, but I love the look of this. The high cut on the thigh is perfect if you’re petite, as it makes legs look so much longer, while the tie waist means you can pull the dress as tight as needs be for a perfect fit.”

SIZE DOES MATTER
Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Keep your guest list small with between five to six dogs, and aim to keep them the same size or breed. Small dogs can easily get intimidated.

2
PICK YOUR THEME
Lewis Hamilton and his bulldog Roscoe
Themes help make everything cohesive and totally Instagrammable, so whether you’re going for a Great Gatsby look or a colour scheme, it will seem more luxurious. But go easy on the decorations, as the dogs won’t be overly bothered and balloons can scare them.
3
SET A BUDGET
“Where my pawty pooches at?”
4
ENTERTAINMENT IS KEY
Keep those cheeky paws out of trouble and plan plenty of activities for them to do. Create a dog ball pit out of a box and hide treats underneath the balls, so they can dive in and find them. Pug-of-war is great – all you need is a rope, then split the dogs into two teams. Not forgetting digging for bones (treats) in a sand pit.

BE SENSIBLE

Safety of the dogs is important, especially if you’re hosting other furry friends, so try to keep things calm. Check all “dog-safe” foods as some of them aren’t suitable for smaller dogs, and make sure you have plenty of water out – oh, and all the poo bags.
6
HAVE FUN!
Capture the whole thing on camera and create your own dog photo booth. Phone cameras are more than good enough, so you won’t need to hire a photographer, and you can find fun props and backdrops on the internet that won’t break the bank.

How do you avoid furry chaos at a party? The parties normally last for two hours, and the dogs are looked after by our team – five dogs to one staff member. We put the dogs into groups by size categories, so the Great Danes will be separate from the Chihuahuas, as they tend to chase each other. This keeps everything calm.
It’s easy to get caught up in all the cuteness, and before you know it, you’ve spent a fortune. Set a budget and stick to it. £100 is more than enough for a doggy picnic, and you can buy cheap decorations and goodie bags from eBay. You can even make dog- safe food at home to keep costs down.

This vision has kept us going for the last year, and with travel looking tantalisingly close, how soon can we make this dream a reality? We’ve looked into all the details you’ll need to be Ibiza-bound this summer. Kaz Crossley is ready for the sun
Is Ibiza open?
The good news is that lockdown has ended on the island and infection rates are low. The bars, clubs and hotels are getting ready to welcome visitors from early June, as confirmed by Spain’s tourism minister. However, Spain is
on the UK government’s amber list – meaning you must take COVID tests and self-isolate for ten days on your return, or five with a negative test – and the EU is considering introducing a “digital green certificate” based on your vaccine status, so there are still some restrictions to consider.
What restrictions are in place? At the time of going to press, exterior terraces of bars and restaurants can now open until 10.30pm. Curfew is 11pm – a restriction that will be revised at the end of May. Mask wearing and social distancing is still required in bars, restaurants and on beaches, and will be in place for the foreseeable. Smoking isn’t currently permitted on restaurant terraces while restrictions are in place, and booking well in advance of your trip is advised.
Will I need to wear a mask on the beach? Currently, you will need to wear
a mask when you move around, but once you’re Jack and Wes: settled no tops needed on your socially distanced sunlounger, you can remove it. Also, you won’t be required to wear a mask in the sea.
Are the clubs open? Ibiza is famed for its epic opening and closing parties, and as clubs gingerly start to reveal their programme for 2021, some closing parties have been announced. Amnesia, O Beach, Ibiza Rocks and Eden have all confirmed that they will be opening. Café Del Mar and Café Mambo are taking reservations, too. Obviously, no guarantees can be made about what safety measures will be required, so do make sure you check before you travel. Q

‘My Lycra will be baggy when I’m 85’ Who do you respect in the fitness industry? Work it, baby Can anyone take over as the nation’s motivator? Joe Wicks had his moment in lockdown, but for any fitness person, they just need to find a way to help people feel good. There are lots of fitness people, but the way I packaged things together was quite different. It wasn’t contrived, it just happened, and that makes it difficult for anyone to follow. New things come along and we must embrace them, which is why I’m supporting the Get Britain Energy Fit For The Future campaign. Tell us about the campaign… There is a correlation between what I do in terms of fitness, how we need to grow and adjust, and new technology. With this new technology of smart meters, like a fitness tracker, they’ll tell you when you’re using too much and when to be more efficient. I think we should all embrace new technology and make Britain energy fit for the future. Do you get recognised a lot? Yes, I can’t go anywhere – my mask’s been my saviour this year as my voice gives me away. Everybody I meet, the moment they see me, they want to smile. I believe that if you smile at people, the world will smile back at you.

You’re very much the OG of home workouts… You should put an M between the O and G. OMG! What exercise do you do? I do four classes a week for my online platform, Mr Motivator’s Club. My classes have to be all-inclusive – I’ve got people who are 89 and eight year olds, people in wheelchairs, people with Parkinson’s – everybody can take part. We do 45 minutes of everything, with modifications for people who need to be in a seated position. I just want everybody to look as good as me at 68 years of age and go, “Wow!”
On GMTV in the ’90s
Still motivating the nation
Is it true you do push-ups every single day? Yes, I have to do my age in press-ups every day, and it’s tough, because I’m 69 this year and I’m just about finishing. But I’m going to stick with it. Can you imagine when I’m 85? My Lycra won’t be stretching like it does now. It’ll just be hanging loose! Do you stick to a healthy diet? I believe in sensible eating. I think if you fancy a pork chop, then have one, but you don’t need two. If you have a drink, you don’t need to have ten, you can have one. I have chocolate once a month – normally M&Ms – and plain crisps, as I like to have them together. But a packet will last for a whole week. Just moderate, because you’ll know when you’ve had enough. But life is too short to be anything but happy.

f you found out that you were being poisoned, I’m guessing the first thing you’d do – after feeling mega-rough – is to hotfoot it to the police station to alert the authorities. But you’re not living in Soapland where that would be a) too simple and b) too boring. Next week, Kim Tate finds out that she hasn’t got dementia, but has been slowly poisoned via the old brandy bottle, and she is furious. So furious, in
fact, that she holds a swanky lunch and invites all the suspects to chow down with her. Well, what else would you expect? Actress Claire King reveals the method behind Kim’s madness. So, how does Kim find out that she’s being poisoned? When Lydia was at the house doing the cleaning, she and Kim have a brandy together and within a couple of hours, Lydia is suddenly feeling nauseous and almost as though she has drunk a whole bottle rather than a glass. The next day, Lydia says she feels as though she’s been hit by a truck. It is then that Kim starts suspecting the brandy is laced with something. She

gets her bloods checked immediately by the doctor again, and she’s told her blood contains diazepam. How does she feel? It’s a big relief because she’s been thinking she has dementia and having
‘Kim convinces them she wants to retire’ tests for it. But now she has to find out who is trying to poison her. She arranges a lunch party and she tries to flush them out to see if anyone will make a mistake.

Wait, what?! Wow, it really does looks like Bernice is proposing to her ex Liam, doesn’t it? Which is why you can’t really blame Leyla for going loca and slapping her (although violence is never the answer). Turns out Bernice is just returning her engagement ring to Liam, but she does still hope for a reunion.
So, she wants revenge? Definitely! Does anyone else know she is being poisoned or is she keeping quiet about it? No, just Kim, because she doesn’t trust anybody at the moment, including Jamie, Gabby or Will. These are people very close to her, but she is keeping it to herself and not giving the game away until she has found out. What does she tell her guests? When they are all gathered, she actually throws a bit of curveball or red herring to them by saying she is going to retire – she has had enough of the business and she wants to hand it on to a successor. And this is her throwing a line out,
seeing who will be reeled in by this. Who is going to be the most sycophantic? Who wants it the most? Are they shocked by this news? They are completely shocked! They never thought they would see Kim Tate actually retire, but she convinces them that this is it. She wants to kick back and enjoy herself now she has made her millions. She convinces them she wants to give it all up. So, what next? It’s now a waiting game to see who she can flush out and discover who it is that is doing it to her. The lunch party is just the start of it. I’m sure there will be many other tests for each one of them. Who will fail?

hen it was announced that Joanna Lumley had been cast in the new series of BBC2 comedy Motherland as Felicity, the mother of uptight, posh, passiveaggressive, patronising Amanda, played by Lucy Punch, it felt like a genius bit of casting. But it’s not until you watch her arrival in this week’s third Mother’s Day episode (unless you’ve binge-watched the whole series already) that you realise just how perfect Lumley is for this role. She manages to be even more uptight, posh, pass-agg and patronising than Amanda, and while she’s brilliantly funny, the scenes between mother and daughter also have a powerful poignancy to them. This series is constantly fleshing out characters who might initially come across as stereotypical, and Amanda most of all. She could easily just have
been the clichéd “Stepford Wife” in the middle of the core gang of more relatable, enjoyably flawed mothers, Julia (Anna Maxwell Martin), Liz (Diane Morgan), Meg (Tanya Moodie) and, of course, token dad Kevin (Paul Ready). But this beautifully written episode gives us an indication of how Amanda has ended up as the seemingly perfect, but entirely brittle figure she is. The moments when her mother can’t even be bothered to fake interest in Amanda’s life are both hilarious and heartbreaking. Their lunch together exposes Felicity’s casual self-absorbed monstrousness, and it’s still a gut punch for Amanda, even though she’s clearly had to endure a lifetime of it. It’s a textbook example of how Motherland mixes the comedic moments with emotional truths. Like Joanna Lumley’s stunning performance.

e love a good historical drama and have been looking forward to this C5 one which, excitingly – and ironically – promises to breathe new life into the infamous demise of Henry VIII’s second wife, Anne Boleyn. head), which gives every scene a heightened sense of tension. Heavily pregnant, Anne revels in her influential position, having Henry’s ear, and takes great pleasure in curtailing Thomas Cromwell’s planned Dissolution Act, which would see smaller monasteries disbanded and their wealth redistributed to the king – radically, she decrees the money should go to charitable endeavours. While court life suits
Anne and her brother George (Paapa Essiedu, I May Destroy You), there are two major flies in the royal ointment: a young and beautiful Jane Seymour (Lola Petticrew, Dating Amber) is buzzing around Henry, turning his head and threatening Anne’s position, and an accident involving the king, which raises questions as to whether Anne is capable of serving her purpose and securing the crown with a
male heir. Turner-Smith is mesmerising as Anne and shows a much more human and sympathetic side to the maligned queen, usually portrayed as an archmanipulator and sorceress. The cat-and-mouse games with Jane are delightfully tense to watch, as Anne attempts to mark her territory, and by the end, you can’t help feeling rather sorry for her. ++++ Kay Ribeiro

Lisey’s Story Apple TV+, Friday 4 June
t’s difficult to know what the most exciting element is of this new Apple TV+ drama series. Is it that it’s a rare foray into television by Julianne Moore, of Magnolia and Hannibal fame, one of the finest actresses in the world, alongside Clive Owen, who also rarely dabbles in smallscreen shows? Is it that it’s a series entirely written by the legendary Stephen King,
adapted from his own novel about the widow of a hugely successful novelist who reflects on the secrets of their marriage? Or is that it’s directed by top film-maker Pablo Larraín, who made the Jackie Kennedy biopic Jackie? The answer is, of course, that all those things make it a must-see TV event. ++++ Boyd Hilton

ARIES 20 Mar-19 Apr
LEO 23 Jul-23 Aug
SAGITTARIUS 22 Nov- 21 Dec
There’s more drama than EastEnders for you this week. This lunar eclipse may cause a hissy fit at home, but is balanced by a robust Mars aspect – you can handle it. Meanwhile, students and those learning new skills should flourish. LUCKY WISH: Patience – and world peace
You’ll barely register rumbles caused by this lunar eclipse and should feel laid-back. But it may impact a child or child-like figure, so be ready to comfort. Money-wise, no splurges as Mercury goes retrograde.
There are changes ahead, accelerated by this lunar eclipse. Your values and perhaps your style need redefining, but you will instinctively find your way. Elsewhere, a sibling or sibling figure is due some good news on the job front. LUCKY PATH: Enlightened
LUCKY FEATURE:
OCTAVIA SPENCER 25 MAY 1970
Broad shoulders
TAURUS 20 Apr-20 May
VIRGO 24 Aug-23 Sep
CAPRICORN 22 Dec-19 Jan
Don’t be rattled by reminders of our mortality this week. This lunar eclipse may bring slightly daunting thoughts, but it’s nothing sinister – just the cosmos telling us to enjoy life while we’re here. Style-wise, a daring departure is the way to go. LUCKY AIM: Living large
Once again, Virgo to the rescue. This lunar eclipse impacts home, and you may have to defend a family member or smooth over a squabble. Money-wise, opportunity knocks, but check the details.
Love can be unpredictable during a lunar eclipse. Luckily for you, this one is pretty benign, although a certain sore point should be avoided. Work-wise, it’ll pay to take the initiative this week, so don’t wait for permission. LUCKY SONG: Surprise Me by Mahalia
LUCKY ALTERNATIVE JOB:
LILY-ROSE DEPP 27 MAY 1999
UN peacekeeper
LIBRA 23 Sep-22 Oct
AQUARIUS 20 Jan-18 Feb
Weather warning – love may be tested by this week’s lunar eclipse. Don’t worry, though, as there’s no real storm, justa few moody rain clouds that a good partnership can easily survive. Meanwhile, your hard work on something is about to be rewarded, so enjoy it. LUCKY TALENT: Capacity for tenacity
There’s nothing wrong with your faculties, Libra. You’re mentally sharp, and the lunar eclipse in your brainy 3rd house tests and expands your mind, spelling success for students especially. Work-wise, no need to fear a change in your industry. LUCKY PHRASE: On the money
Even firm friendships may be tested during this lunar eclipse. Your honesty, even if it feels a bit brutal, is key to restoring balance. The moon being your career planet, expect the odd hitch, but still a successful week. LUCKY SONG: 7 Rings by Ariana Grande
CANCER 21 Jun-22 Jul
SCORPIO 23 Oct-21 Nov
PISCES 19 Feb-19 Mar
Don’t let this lunar eclipse wobble your confidence. It may prompt an upgrade of your self-image, but remember that you’re expanding great qualities, not starting from scratch. Meanwhile, someone’s good news may turn into a noisy celebration. LUCKY TIPPLE: Bubbly
Navigating a relationship isn’t easy. And your love planet Venus out of bounds may alter your pace or direction, but go with it. Moneywise, beware splashing out on what seems like a great travel plan.
Embracing change isn’t a problem for Pisces. So, if this lunar eclipse quickens a work rethink, fear not. Do what you do best – capitalise on it. Meanwhile, your advice for someone younger may also apply to you. LUCKY SONG: Change by Christina Aguilera
LUCKY STRONG SUIT:

When Angelina hit the Bromley nightclubs
SHUTTERSTOCK
Are you as confused as we are by this picture? Yes, that is the real Angelina Jolie standing next to two Elvis Presley impersonators. Now, wait for us to really blow your minds. Because that is Oscar-winner Angelina in a nightclub called Jazzmin’s in Bromley, Kent. Do we know why she was there? Not really. Most likely she was in the middle of filming as the lead in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, but why she decided to let off steam at a nightclub in Bromley is as much your guess as it is ours. You’ll find reference to Ange’s – as well as Robbie Williams’ – visit to Jazzmin’s on an online forum uniquely titled, “Bromley is a shitehole”, and another that gives the nightclub this glorious review, “If you enjoy a party in your gran’s living room, Jazzmin’s is the place to be.” We could be persuaded…
