We have never been careful having sex from day one, as we knew we wanted to be together. It’s frustrating as I feel young but I’m not inside. I’m 43 this month so I guess I need help.” Our source added, “Katie and Carl are talking about IVF but would like it to happen naturally. Katie is hopeful that stress might be the reason she’s not had any luck and would love to fall pregnant, naturally. But she’s not naive and if it doesn’t happen she knows IVF or even surrogacy are options. She’s focused on baby number six and she’ll do what it takes to make that happen.” Kat Romero

f there’s one TV show The Masked Dancer guaranteed to have promises zany fun you shouting at your screens, it’s ITV’s The Masked Singer. But you can times that by two next week as the series’ wacky new spin-off, The Masked Dancer, makes its debut in the UK. Once again hosted by Joel Dommett, the brilliantly bonkers format sees returning star detectives Davina McCall, Jonathan Ross and Mo Gilligan joined by Strictly’s Oti Mabuse, as they each attempt to guess which celebrities are showing off their dance moves under the amazingly Oti has joined Davina, elaborate costumes. Mo and Jonathan on the panel, with Joel hosting “I love that we’ve got to the point where the costumes don’t even have faces on any more, Can you believe how big they’re just objects! It’s shown just how the franchise has become? much fun you can have,” Joel, 35, laughs as new catches up with him. I don’t think anyone anticipated Here, we chat to Joel about the runaway how much it was going to appeal success of the show, how he’d make a terrible to grannies and toddlers, as well contestant, and why he finds it easy to keep as people my age. With the first series, everyone said it was a the programme’s secrets – even from his wife, model Hannah Cooper… guilty pleasure. By the second series, it just became a pleasure.
Hi Joel. Is The Masked Dancer as mad as it sounds? We started filming and it just felt really joyous and full of fun, love and silliness. It’s very simple – you’re literally seeing who someone is from the way they move, and there are loads of extra clues.
Is it even crazier than The Masked Singer? It’s taken the format to another level. It’s extended the fun of The Masked Singer and it’s just as bizarre, if not even more so. I think because you haven’t got the foundation of the voices, you’re really focused on the clues and the visual and body shapes. It’s really fun.
Part of the appeal is that the costumes are always amazing. What’s in store this time? They’re absolutely crazy and bizarre. Everyone immediately fell in love with Carwash. It’s such an amazing character. I love that we’ve got to the point where the costumes don’t even have faces on any more, they’re just objects! It’s shown how much fun you can have.
The last series of The Masked Singer had some amazing
‘I don’t have the talent for Strictly!’ na names ame performing. Does The Masked Da anc match that? Dancer
Myy assumption as with The Masked Dancer wa as that th the names were going to be lesser was tha an oon the last series of The Masked than Sin nge But I can honestly tell you that Singer. thee names na are equal to, if not better. There rea ally are some amazing reveals. There’s one really in particular part that completely took us all by ab bsolu surprise. You just wouldn’t expect absolute someo someone like this to do the show, and they aree brilliant! br It’s definitely the biggest rea acti we’ve had. reaction
How Ho ow are a your guessing skills?
Go Good, ood, I think. I’ve correctly guessed a few. few. There are a few that I’m miles aw way from. It’s very much like that with away this It’s much tougher. If you think thi is show. sh you find fin The Masked Singer easy, then this is tthe he show for you. I’m so lucky I host the show and I’m not on the panel, because I hhave ave zero input.
11
You find out the celebrities’ identities when they’re unmasked. Do you ever let any friends and family in on the secret? I genuinely keep it to myself. I think it’s the best way. And, weirdly, if I don’t tell anyone, I almost erase it from my mind, no matter how massive they are as a star. So when we watch it on television, it’s like I’m enjoying it again for the first time. Also, I know that if you tell people, you’re taking that enjoyment of the show away from them, as it really is about the guessing. Even if I was to tell my wife Hannah, I’d be ruining the show for her. So I’m better off not telling her, then she can enjoy the show for what it is.
If you had to choose to compete in either show, which would you go for? The Masked Singer – only because I’d rather sing than dance. But if I could dance, I’d definitely do Dancer, because it feels so freeing and fun. The people were just really enjoying themselves. Nobody is judging them for who they are. There’s someone who’s unbelievably recognisable that would never be able to do a show as themselves, because everyone would judge them on being them. It’s so nice to take that out of the picture completely and just let it all go.
Strictly Come Dancing isn’t on the cards for you, then?
JOEL WEARS JACKET AND TROUSERS BY JOSHUA KANE BESPOKE, SHIRT AND BOW TIE BY RIVER ISLAND, SHOES BY DUNE
I definitely haven’t got the talent to do Strictly! Hannah and I came back from the BRIT Awards the other night and I discovered I was dressed like a salsa dancer, so I was trying to salsa around the kitchen. I put a video on Instagram and Oti called me the next day and said, “Oh my God, I was howling! You’re so bad at dancing, it’s so funny!”
12
Will we see any of your dance moves on the show? It’s been fun dancing when I come back on stage after each performance. I try to have fun with the masked celebrities, picking up on the particular moves in their routines, but I realised very early on that the suits I wear are unbelievably tight, and it means I’m unable to do almost every single dance move! The only dance move I can do is a kind of side shuffle.
Joel and Hannah married in Mykonos in 2019
But you’ve fallen in love with it… When I first started guest-presenting jobs like MTV News eight years ago, I really didn’t feel like I was good at it. And when I did my first year of Extra Camp after the jungle, I really struggled with it and found it difficult.
It’s much easier this year as you can just wear a mask! But it’s happened at a perfect time. If I was younger and wanted to go to pubs and nightclubs , maybe it would be more difficult. But people are lovely – it’s not like they shout angry stuff at me in the street, apart from, “Who the hell is the Unicorn?!” And because I’m the age I am, I love where I live, and I love my wife, we just stay in a lot really [laughs].
You seem pretty unstarry – how do you keep yourself grounded? It’s a lot of work – 21 days consecutively of live television, with interviews, Autocue, sketches. But that’s what it’s for, that show – it was like an apprenticeship in television. It teaches you everything you need to know under massive compound pressure – it’s an insane amount of pressure. Then you go to something like The Masked Singer and you’re like, “Oh my God, this is so easy compared to Extra Camp!” Even though it’s a Saturday night show and it’s huge, it feels easier as you’ve learnt so much on those smaller shows.
Did the famous presenters on the panel offer you any advice? For me, presenting a show in front of two of the biggest presenters on UK television is huge, and both Jonathan and Davina have been so welcoming and encouraging. Davina has become a sort of TV older sister. She’s been wonderful. And it’s The couple my life’s work to try to loved hanging out together become best friends with in lockdown Jonathan Ross, and I feel like I’m slowly wearing him down [laughs]. I constantly WhatsApp him, a bit too much, but I’m trying to kill him with kindness.
In this business, it’s really easy to get your feet swept from underneath you, especially if it’s sudden. I don’t blame people who become horrific human beings when they’re suddenly thrust from a reality show, as it’s really odd. But I feel like I went about it the right way. I had been doing stand-up comedy for eight years by the time I went into the I’m A Celebrity jungle. I had that time before and that struggle, and I think it’s important to have that struggle in order to appreciate it.
You proposed to your wife, Hannah, on the last page in your book, and you tied the knot in Mykonos in 2019. How has married life been? Hannah and I always travelled so much with our jobs, and were always working, so lockdown was lovely, especially the first one, because it forced us to be together and to hang out. We just really enjoyed that time together in our house that we’d never really had before. We get each other and I really like her. That’s a thing that people don’t say very often. Sometimes marriage has such a negative connotation attached to it – it’s like you should immediately enjoy your relationship less as soon as you’re married. But we just really have a fun time and it’s no different. RIANNE ISON
Has your career changed since this gig? It’s definitely changed a lot and I don’t take it lightly. These shows come along so rarely, so I really feel lucky. I never want to take it for granted. I really look forward to going into work every day.
When you landed this show as a presenting gig, it was a big deal for you. Were you nervous? It’s a strange one as doing stand-up prepares you for so many different things, and is such a wonderful foundation as it gives you that confidence. The reason I started stand-up in the first place was actually to give me more confidence, because I had really low self-esteem. I thought, “If I can talk to a room of 300 people, I can do anything.” But I didn’t necessarily expect to go down the presenting route.
Does it mean you now get recognised when you’re out and about?

‘ D e rm o t a n d I d o b ri n g Fri d a y l o l s ! ’ As they celebrate six months co-hosting This Morning, Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond talk about working well together
I
t’s nearly 20 years since bubbly Brummie Alison Hammond met Dermot O’Leary, when he interviewed her after she’d just been voted out of the Big Brother house. Now they are celebrating six months as the co-hosts of Friday’s edition of This Morning. And as lockdown restrictions ease, the double act are looking forward to socialising together. “We haven’t been to each other’s houses yet – but that is to come soon, I’m sure,” says 46-year-old Alison. “Dermot has already told me that as soon as this is all over, I’m invited to his house to meet his son and he said he’s going to cook for me. I can’t wait – that will be amazing.”

Meanwhile, Dermot is looking forward to a tour of the Midlands. “Will there be wild nights out?” says Dermot, 48. “Yes! She’s promised to take me e to Birmingham.” Hearing the duo discuss their double act, you can see why ITV decided to pair up the show’s motormouth showbiz reporter with one of TV’s most popular stars, as they bounce off each other fabulously. Yet they can’t help but laugh when we compare them to Ant and Dec…
Hi, Alison and Dermot! What have you enjoyed most about working together? Alison: It’s been an absolute dream. I’ve loved every minute

of it to be honest! I think the best thing really is getting to know Dermot. He always shows me Derm pictur pictures and videos of his baby and hhis cats, so I’m finding out so much mu more about him and his w wonderful family. He’s just a re really cool person. D Dermot: Getting to know the lovely Alison even more. W knew each other and We w have always got on very we w but we didn’t know well each other well, so our c chemistry has had to grow an adapt on air. When we and firs met via Big Brother, it first was such an innocent time and befor social media. You did well before in the house by being yourself A and Alison was always 100% herse And it’s easy to say now herself. s was always destined that she to do this, but there’s a world of difference between being yourself in a reality show and being able to host a show. There aren’t that many people who can do that. Alison’s one, Rylan’s one… You can count them on one hand really.
Alison on Big Brother in 2002
Your initials are A and D. Should Ant and Dec be worried you’re taking over? Alison: Well, there’s definitely one taller and one shorter, but I think that might be where the similarities end. We’re more like Laurel and Hardy! Dermot: I imagine Ant and Dec are sleeping quite soundly.
What’s your all-time favourite This Morning moment? Alison: Gosh, there are so many.

Her chat with Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling was a hit on social media
‘On live TV, you can’t be afraid about going off script’ I think when we all went back to the Albert Dock in Liverpool for the 25th anniversary of the show and also had a big party in London, that was pretty special. Just listening to Richard and Judy talk about what it was like then was great. It was a bit like a dream. Other fun moments have included my chat with Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling – that went a bit crazy on social media. Dermot: That is genuinely up there as one of the greatest moments of telly. When you’re feeling blue and you need something to pick you up, it’s just one of the most feelgood five minutes you’ll get.
What have you learnt about each other over the past six months? Alison: I’ve learnt that Dermot is very patient, very kind and very, very generous. We’ve definitely got each other’s back and it’s like a great brother-sister relationship. But what has been
hard with lockdown is not being able to sit next to each other and be tactile. We haven’t been to each other’s houses yet – but that is to come soon, I’m sure. Dermot has already told me that as soon as this is all over, I’m invited to his house to meet his son and he said he’s going to cook for me – I can’t wait. That will be amazing. Dermot: Alison is brilliant at her job. When you work with someone on live television, you can’t be afraid about going off script and having fun and she is one of the best for that.
You’ve been a big hit with the viewers. Does it actually feel like work? Alison: We do have the best time and it is a lot of fun, but it’s also hard work as well! We had to take time to find our feet. My main critic is my son and he texted me recently saying, “Mum, I love you and Dermot – today’s show was brilliant.”
When I get a message like that from him, I’m happy. Dermot and I do bring Friday lols! We can deliver our more serious side too when it’s needed, but I do feel like there will always be a dash of Friday fun sprinkled on top.
Dermot: I just haven’t worried myself about the ratings or any external pressures really. It’s a great fun job, but you get your brief late on a Thursday – and I play football on Thursdays and I thought I would have to give it

up. I’ve worked out that I can get there, eat and shower quickly after and then I’ll sit down about 9pm and do about an hour’s prep and still get a good night’s sleep before the show… so I’ve sorted a good routine. But I still can’t quite believe – both of us actually feel this way – that some of the world’s best chefs come in and cook us lunch every Friday. What a perk! The food part of the show never feels like work.
Alison, you lost both of your parents last year and were
particularly close to your mum. What do you think she would have made of you hosting This Morning each Friday? Alison: She would have been over the moon. It’s so bittersweet that this has happened and she’s not here to see it. Having said that, I do still feel her presence. I do think she is still guiding me. She loved my showbiz world. She used to love coming along with me to events and meeting celebrities – she was always in her element doing that. She was totally my number one fan and was always mega proud of me. In a way I’m living my mum’s dream.
They’ve had to socially distance on set
Dermot, you became a dad [to son Kasper] last year, so did you get to watch more daytime TV? And has fatherhood changed you? Dermot: Well, it was always on in the background, but Kasper is a handful – he’s a pretty good sleeper, but you can’t really sit around watching too much telly
with him, that’s for sure. When you become a parent I think you do view the world slightly differently. Becoming a parent can’t help but change you – I cry at a lot more TV ads now. TRICIA MARTIN See Dermot and Alison on This Morning, Friday, 10am, ITV

DJ’S UNDER THE WEATHER My poorly little girl DJ was off school last week. She woke up in the middle of the night crying with a headache. Myself and all the kids, minus Max, suffer from migraines, so I think that’s what it was. She had a burning head and was saying she felt sick. She was completely conked out, bless her. I really hate it when the kids are ill.
DOGGY DATE
My dog Princess has also been poorly. She was sick so we took her to the vet and she had a scan. She’s booked in to have a hysterectomy, but apart from that she’s fine. On the way back, we popped into the pub now that you can sit inside. I’m not a massive drinker at all, but I fancied half a lager and lime. We sat down and, next thing you know, Princess jumped up to the table. She sat with us while we were having our food. It was so funny – it was like being on a date with a dog!
CONGRATULATIONS, BRIAN It’s lovel lovely news that my ex Brian has welcom welcomed his baby girl. Our Lilly went to see th them last week and I saw pictures and vid videos that Brian had sent the girls of thei their new arrival. She’s absolutely stunn stunning. A huge congratulations to Bria Brian and Danielle – I wish them bboth the very best. I know they’ve spoken about how difficult they found it to conceive. She’s a miracle baby and I’m really happy for them.
CLEARING THINGS UP I just want to set a couple of things straight. I bought some art pieces for the new house from a gallery called Castle Fine Art last week and there were press stories about me paying £200k for them. Bloody hell – £200k on artwork? Don’t make me laugh! I’m not going to say how much they were, but it was nowhere near that. I wish I had that kind of money! I’ve wanted these pieces for over a year now and I’m a massive fan of the artist Domingo Zapata. I think he’s brilliant. There were also some reports that I’ve got a new designer coat. Just for the record, I got that coat half-price in the sale from Marc Jacobs at Christmas. It does make me laugh, what people say!

shley Cain and his partner Safiyya Vorajee showed incredible strength last week as they said one final goodbye to their baby daughter Azaylia with a Lion King-themed funeral service. The couple were visibly moved and wiped away tears as they headed up a funeral procession through Nuneaton in Warwickshire, after asking mourners to clap and cheer to create an “uplifting day of remembrance”. Eight-month-old Azaylia lost her battle with acute myeloid leukaemia in April after spending much of her short life in hospital. Crowds lined the streets to see her tiny coffin, adorned with lion toys and beautiful white flowers, transported in a horse-drawn carriage. The

‘We would love to make her final journey a special one’ had her daughter’s name spelt out in gold letters in her hair clip. Ashley and Safiyya raised an incredible £1.6m while Azaylia was battling leukaemia, as they hoped a potentially life-saving treatment in Singapore might be the answer. After her death they detailed plans to set up a charity in her name with the donations. Ahead of the funeral, Saffiya shared online, “My heart is aching so hard. I’m so nervous for today but I promise I will do you proud baby.” Meanwhile Ashley wrote, “We would love to make her final journey a special one as she watches from heaven. CHLOE FERRY Former Geordie Shore star Chloe, 25, is planning a third nose job. “Despite being ballsy on TV, Chloe is actually really insecure about it and gets really funny when people take pictures of her. She needs to know it’s her right angle,” a source said.
CHARLOTTE HITS OUT AT VICKY
Charlotte Crosby has slammed her former Geordie Shore co-star Vicky Pattison, saying she thinks she’s “higher” than the show. Speaking to her fellow cast mates Scotty T and James Tindale about a potential reunion on her podcast Values And Vibrators, Charlotte, 31, said, “Vicky would never do it again. I mean, I don’t think we really care about that.” When Scotty, 33, asked why people wouldn’t go back to Geordie Shore, Charlotte, who hasn’t spoken to Vicky
since she quit the show in 2014, added, “I think they move on and they think that they’re higher than Geordie Shore now.” Ouch!
KYLIE ‘MOTHERHOOD HAS CHANGED ME’ Kylie Jenner is used to having a hectic celebrity lifestyle but, like the rest of us, she was forced to slow down when the coronavirus pandemic hit. “I don’t think I’ve ever had a moment to just stop, be still, and not have work until then,” the 23-year-old admitted. “It was a difficult time for so many, I feel very lucky that I could

NATASHA HAMILTON Atomic Kitten singer Natasha has bravely opened up about her mental heath battle following the birth of her fourth child, Ella, in 2014. “When I had my little girl I had a full breakdown and I was under the care of a mental health team, the care of a psychiatrist,” the 38-year-old shared. “It was then, I was just like, ‘We can’t keep doing this Tash. We’ve probably all got annoying habits, but we’ve just got used to them now.” As much as the pair are willing to joke about their friendship with each other and bandmates Danny Jones and Harry Judd, both 35, there’s one thing they won’t kid about. After going through their own battles, Tom says the band are committed to checking in on each other’s mental health. “If we look at our band and friendship group as an example, we’ve definitely got much better than we were at doing it,” Tom explains. “It’s still difficult, but it’s something we’re not afraid to address any more.” Now the pair have teamed up with Three UK to support Samaritans’ Better Phone Friends, which encourages us all to reach out. I thought the TOWIE drama would be down to a minimum after lockdown, but it seemed to be worse! Did you feel the same with The Real Housewives Of Cheshire? I’m telling you, we’ve all come out of lockdown and everyone is larger than life. We all need sorting out.

BEWARE OF SCAMMERS
We started a family Instagram account recently and in no time four fake accounts were set up with almost exactly the same name and the same pictures. They started asking the followers for their bank details and saying they had won money. I want to stress that unless you see me personally following the account, it’s not real. These scammers should be ashamed of themselves and I’m really sorry if anyone has been affected. But in better news, we now have over 100,000 subscribers to our YouTube channel The Andres. Thank you! The other day a seven-year-old girl came up to me and said, “Are you Peter Andre from The Andres?” When I said yes, she said, “I’m a subscriber.” It was so cute. While we were filming one of our recent videos, we had a bit of a disaster when my gym flooded after the boiler exploded. We didn’t have any water for nearly 48 hours. There’s still some flooding, so I’m waiting until it’s gone to assess the damage to the gym.
MY LITTLE SHOWMAN
PHOTOS: GETTY
I’ll be there for your wedding I know everyone is really excited about the Friends reunion, but I’ve actually never watched a single episode! Bizarrely, I did sing at David Schwimmer’s wedding in 2010, though. I got a call saying he wanted to meet me and I thought it was a wind-up. I went to a London hotel to meet him and we started talking and he said to me, “I’d love you to sing at our wedding.” And so I did! It was definitely strange seeing Thandiwe Newton and David Walliams in the same room, singing along to a song I never even knew they knew. It was wonderful. I actually have a photo of myself, David and his then-wife Zoë Buckman on my mantelpiece.
Theo is obsessed with The Greatest Showman! He’s been practising the trick where you lift the hat up with your leg and catch it on your head, and he’s been getting so good at it. He loves dancing and singing, but whenever he knows someone is watching him he goes all shy. I said to Emily, “Imagine if it’s Millie or Theo who actually end up being on the stage when they’re older!” You never know what they’re going to do and that’s kind of exciting, but we will encourage them no matter what it is.
WE’LL MISS Y O ZOE U
Travel chaos I’m sure I’m not the only one who sees so much confusion over travelling to countries on the amber list. I think that the Government should have been clearer because one minister said you could go and visit friends but then Boris Johnson said you shouldn’t be travelling to those countries. Myself and Emily love travelling just the two of us, but equally we are worried about going away during the pandemic without the kids in case we get stranded. So if we do go anywhere, it will be as a family during the summer holidays. MY VIE ON W T N E WH E S

I wish Zoe nothing but the best – I’m sure whatever she does she’ll knock them dead!

REAL LIFE
‘I know how George Floyd’s sister feels – I watched my brother die in police custody’ George Floyd’s murder one year ago brought back horrific memories for Janet Alder, whose brother Christopher died while in police care
F
ormer paratrooper Christopher Alder, 37, died on the floor of a police station in 1998 with officers standing around him allegedly making racist monkey noises. His sister, Janet Alder, 59, who lives in West Yorkshire, has spent two decades campaigning for justice. Here, she tells her story… A year has passed since I – along with the rest of the world – watched the video of George Floyd’s life being casually snuffed out in utter horror. Seeing Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin kneeling on his neck for over nine minutes, I even felt my own chest restricting and throat closing. It reminded me of another black man I’d seen slowly die in police custody – my own brother, Christopher. We grew up in Hull in the 60s and 70s and there were five of us kids: Emmanuel, Richard, Christopher, me – the only girl – and Stephen. Our parents had come from Nigeria in search of a better life, but Dad worked all hours and Mum, struggling to raise us, began having psychotic episodes. Our childhood was spent in a children’s home. Christopher and I, as the middle kids, were especially close. He excelled at sports and dancing. I really looked up to him. As the only black family at school, kids often used the N-word and called me “rubber lips”. But Christopher protected me. He had a jokey way of getting through the hard times. He had strong morals, and after

school he joined the army. He wanted to fight for his country. For six years he served as a paratrooper in the Falklands and Northern Ireland before returning to Hull to train as a computer programmer. My brother always helped others. After his death, neighbours wrote saying how he’d run chores. One girl remembered how he’d protected her in a nightclub. No one had a bad word to say about him.
LEFT UNCONSCIOUS It was on 1 April 1998, when Christopher, then 37 and a separated father-of-two, got into a fight outside a nightclub. He’d lost consciousness, and a tooth, before an ambulance took him to hospital accompanied by police officers. His injuries were not deemed life-threatening, so he was discharged then taken into custody. By the time he arrived at the station, he was unconscious again, missing another tooth, and now had cuts on the lip and above the eye. He was dragged handcuffed into the custody suite, his trousers and boxer shorts around his ankles and his belt missing, and left face down on the floor. No attempt was made to put him into the recovery position, and CCTV footage – which I had to wait two excruciatingly painful years to be allowed to see – showed five officers casually standing around him. For 11 minutes they chatted about what they could possibly charge him with while my brother lay unconscious

gasping for breath and gurgling in his own blood as his life seeped away. Then, once it was obvious he was dead, there was talk of “f**king banana boats” and monkey noises were made. In the recent series of TV’s Line Of Duty this detail was featured in a plot – and it was taken from Christopher’s case. Seeing the footage of my brother – out of reach on the screen – bound, motionless and treated so inhumanely, became the very worst moment of my life. I just stared in shock. I feel sure the Floyd family felt the same way – disbelieving, horrified, powerless. And I am sure they felt, as I did, the devastating frustration when none of the other officers attempted to intervene. In Christopher’s case, one of the officers even said he was worried about asphyxia. But none of them attempted to move him into the recovery position, let alone take him to hospital. not until 2011 that Grace’s relatives had their visas approved and prepared for the burial, scheduled for 4 November, 2011. As part of Nigerian custom, her relatives demanded a lace scarf be buried with Grace’s coffin. Which is when the council made a terrible admission. Grace’s body was not, in fact, in the mortuary where it was supposed to be. It had been buried as Christopher back in 2000. A criminal investigation was ordered into this so-called “mix-up” and it was carried out by South Yorkshire Police. It concluded in May 2013 that mortuary workers did indeed have a “case to answer”, and had missed at least 10 opportunities to report what had happened. But in October that year, the CPS said it would not prosecute anyone. We ended up holding a second funeral, this time for our actual brother, in 2012, 14 years after his death. Despite an inquest ruling a verdict of unlawful killing, no individual or organisation has ever been officially held to account for what happened to Christopher. Thankfully, as a result of the worldwide protests, the Floyd family will see Chauvin serve time in jail for his crime. I am desperate for Christopher to have the same justice. It is encouraging that the Black Lives Matter movement is making a real impact now. But we must keep the pressure on if justice is to be served. SUSANNA GALTON

‘I acted like a monster,’ the killer said in his apology in court 56
Klosowski had problems with anger and booze
Lukasz ran to a bedroom, where his father shot him twice in the chest. Terrified, Chelsea fled to a bathroom with her mobile and locked the door. She called the police and begged them to come as Klosowski was angry and drunk, and she was certain her boyfriend was in terrible danger. Outside the bathroom, crazed Klosowski reloaded his gun and fired through the door. His second shot was delivered at close range to Chelsea’s chest and the teen lay bleeding in the bathtub. Klosowski’s rampage had terrified his young stepchildren, who had fled to an alcove in the back of the property. After the shootings, he said to his wife, “I think I shot my son. Can you go and have a look?” When police arrived, Klosowski was sitting with his gun on his lap. Paramedics found Lukasz face down on a bed. Chelsea was in the bath with the phone she had desperately used to call for help. They were both pronounced dead at 12.40am. There was an outpouring of grief for the young couple. Their last moments were unthinkable, especially as they had died at the hands of a family member. In November,
CRIME Chelsea and Lukasz were studying at university
Klosowski pleaded guilty to double murder. Because he had admitted his guilt early, he was entitled to a reduction of up to 40% on his non-parole jail period. In April this year, Klosowski faced sentencing. As the 46-year-old made a short statement to the court, the families of both victims showed their solidarity and left the courtroom so they didn’t have to hear it. Klosowski said he’d thought about what he’d done every day and apologised. “I acted like a monster,” he said. “The world would be a better place if I had shot myself instead. They were two wonderful people who were clearly destined to live happy. I destroyed the lives of their family and many other people.” But the prosecution said the apology was “too little, too late”. They said the shootings were the consequence of a row between Lukasz and his dad, adding, “The offending came about due to the insulting of the defendant’s pride. And it was fuelled by the combination of two fatal causes – anger and alcohol.” Klosowski’s defence told the court that while he couldn’t explain his actions, he admitted his intention was
to kill. “The prisoner accepts the horror of his behaviour,” his lawyer said. There were 22 emotional victim impact statements. Chelsea’s dad, Greg, said he’d had his best friend stolen from him and the final moments of his daughter and her boyfriend haunted him. “They had nowhere to hide and nowhere to escape,” he said. “Her last moments, knowing she was about to be shot, must have been horrendous beyond imagination.”
AN ACT OF ‘TWISTED EVIL’ Chelsea’s mother, Debra, said, “I feel so fragile, so broken, like I’m constantly teetering on the edge. I feel like I’m living in some horror story.” Chelsea’s sister, Maddie, told Klosowski he would “rot in the fiery pits of Hell” and that he would never know true happiness. “You didn’t deserve Lukasz,” she added. Lukasz’s mother said the killings were an act of “twisted evil” and Klosowski would forever be remembered as a murderer. The judge, Justice Anne Bampton, acknowledged that reports had shown Klosowski suffered from anger management problems and alcohol addiction. But she

added that it didn’t excuse his actions and Klosowski’s irrational behaviour had escalated and turned violent. “Your conduct was deliberate and purposeful,” she said. Justice Bampton’s voice wavered at the sentencing, as she’d clearly felt the impact of the emotional stories shared about the young couple. “The anguish and heart-wrenching pain your offending had brought on Lukasz’s mother, stepfather and little brother, Chelsea’s mother, father and sister, their extended families and their friends is profound,” she said. “I cannot do justice to the raw emotion of the victim impact statements. It’s clear Lukasz and Chelsea’s legacy is that they made the world a better place for their families and those whose lives they touched. It is to be hoped the love and joy for life they had will give their families and friends the strength they need to find peace.” Klosowski got life with a non-parole period of 34 years. He was only granted a 15% reduction on his non-parole period due to the “seriousness” of his offending. The killer will be in his eighties before he is considered for release. Outside the court, Greg read a statement on behalf of both families. “We will never understand why this happened and will spend the rest of our lives grieving and asking why,” he said. “Today marks the end of one incredibly difficult chapter. Tomorrow we’ll continue with a more difficult task of learning to live without Chelsea and Lukasz.” Lukasz and Chelsea had hoped to live a happy life together and help change the world. Tragically, their dreams were ended by the brute who had given Lukasz life. GAIL SHORTLAND

CRIME SCENE THERAPY – DARE YOU TRY IT? Working on your self-esteem can be murder, but here’s a killer way to solve life’s problems
T
he victim, the murderer, the detective – they might all sound like characters in a TV crime drama, but they represent the traits you need on hand to explore your own mind and bring order back into your life. “People who’ve never used therapy to work through their life problems are always curious to know what it’s like,” explains leading therapist Rahel Papis. “And the best way I’ve found to describe it is like a crime scene. A problem in your life is like having a dead body in the basement – there’s all that stress of dealing with it and the fear of others finding out about it. “The dead body, or ‘the victim’, represents the part of you that’s helpless, while ‘the murderer’ is the part of your personality that sabotages your thoughts and kills your dreams with negativity. “The key to unlocking the whole case is ‘the detective’ – the part of you that you can use to identify your problems and bring resolution to your very own inner crime scene.” Rahel adds that these three personalities can “help connect your conscious and subconscious mind to discover what’s holding you back, break destructive patterns of behaviour and achieve your desired goals”. Here’s how to use each character to help you clean up your inner crime scene and move on with your life…
shame or discontent in a relationship. This will help give you a deeper understanding of the triggers in your life.
THE VICTIM
“The victim represents the needy, helpless part of ourselves that we tend to hide from the world and which usually stems from low self-esteem,” says Rahel. “Most of the clients I see at my hypnotherapy clinic have problems that boil down to issues with self-worth, even if it’s a habit they can’t kick, such as biting their nails, or suffering from an eating disorder. “Maybe you feel as though you’re not good enough to be in your job, you’re a people pleaser or simply have irrational fears. HEALTH Work through your emotions to deal with the “crime scene”
CLEARING UP THE CRIME SCENE “The crime scene is where the victim and the murderer meet,” says Rahel. “We can’t change the past, but we can give our emotions space and change how we feel about past traumas.” She recommends taking the following steps to “help you work through your emotions and clear away the debris from your crime scene”.
your murderer personality is often the loudest and most dominant of your thoughts. When it says ‘nobody loves you’ or ‘you can’t do that’ you tend to listen. Your murderer personality is lurking there waiting to kill your dreams and sabotage your confidence.” Try this: Disarm your killer by replacing sabotaging thoughts with positive confidence-boosters. For example, ‘I’m not worthy of being loved’ can be reframed as ‘I’m allowed to give and receive love.’ Situations can change once you feel positive about yourself. Write down five things you love about yourself. For example, ‘I’m a good friend.’ Now write down five accomplishments, however small they may seem. For example, ‘I cooked a nice
meal last night.’ This exercise will help you to acknowledge your talents and gifts.
CASE CLOSED Rahel says, “Once you realise you have power over how you think and how to be kind to yourself, nothing will stop you from living your best life, free from the crime scene of your thoughts.” Sandra Walsh Therapy In Crime by Rahel Papis (£14.99, Clink Street Publishing) is out now
Create your own hypnotherapy session with this exercise: Think of a situation or feeling you’d like to create (perhaps a relaxing business presentation). Hold your forehead with one hand (to calm several energy points), make yourself comfortable and close your eyes. Imagine a huge light switch set to “on”, take a deep breath and count backwards from five to one. Concentrate on the big button and prepare to turn it off. As soon as it’s set to “off” you should feel totally relaxed and in a place where you feel comfortable (even if you’re sitting on the bus, try picturing yourself in your bedroom). Let your imagination create the film of your desired situation – you giving a great presentation, for instance. Once you’re happy with your film, save the situation in every cell of your body by breathing deeply. Take five deep breaths. Open your eyes and you will feel refreshed and content.

FERMENTED AND FRESH TOMATO SALAD WITH FETA INGREDIENTS
500g large beef heart tomatoes or similar, cut into chunks of varying shapes 300g fermented cherry tomatoes and 2 tbsp of their brine 2 pitta breads 6 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 7-8 sprigs tarragon, leaves finely chopped 4-5 sprigs mint, leaves finely chopped 7-8 sprigs flat-leaf parsley 2 tsp red wine vinegar 1 tsp golden caster sugar 2-3 tsp sumac 200g sheep’s milk feta cheese Flaky sea salt and ground black pepper
60
TO MAKE THE FERMENTED CHERRY TOMATOES (fills a 2-3 litre jar)
1 litre water 30g flaky sea salt 20g caster (superfine) sugar 600g cherry tomatoes 1 mild red chilli (optional) METHOD
■ First make the fermented cherry tomatoes. Measure the water, salt and sugar into a saucepan. Bring to the boil, stir to dissolve the grains, then leave to cool completely. ■ Sterilise a Kilner jar (or similar). Wash the tomatoes and chilli (if using), add to the jar and cover with the cooled brine.
S E RV E S 2 ■ The tomatoes do need to be completely submerged to prevent spoiling. ■ Leave in a warm place for 10-14 days, until the water is cloudy and tomatoes sour, blistered and fizzing. Unless using within a day or so of being “ready”, transfer to the fridge where they will last for 3-4 months. ■ Heat the oven to 220°C/200°C fan/425°F. ■ Put the tomato chunks along with any juices into a bowl, and add just a little pinch of salt. ■ Spoon the fermented tomatoes and two tablespoons of brine on top, but don’t mix just yet. Set to one side. ■ Open the pitta up with a sharp knife to create two thin halves,
then tear each of those into thumb-size shards. Place the pitta on a baking sheet, tumble in two tablespoons of the oil, then bake for 10-12 minutes until golden and crisp. ■ Prepare the herbs, add to the tomatoes, along with the still-warm pieces of pitta, red wine vinegar, sugar and half the sumac. Gently tumble the salad so as to avoid popping too many cherry tomatoes. ■ Check for seasoning and add black pepper and more salt and vinegar if needed. ■ Decant the salad onto a platter or individual plates. Scrape any juices over, crumble the feta on top, and finish with the rest of the olive oil plus a dusting of sumac.
INGREDIENTS
300g chana dal or yellow split peas 500g onions, finely sliced 3 tbsp vegetable oil 3 green cardamom pods 250g curly kale 2 tbsp cold-pressed rapeseed oil 4 cloves garlic, minced 25g fresh ginger, peeled and minced 2 tsp ground cumin 2 tsp garam masala 1 tsp ground turmeric ½ tsp dried chilli flakes 250g tomatoes, roughly chopped 100ml water 6 tbsp desiccated coconut, plus extra to garnish 100g plain yoghurt 2 mild green chillies, finely sliced Flaky sea salt METHOD
■ Soak the chana dal in justboiled water for 15 minutes. ■ Cook the onions in a heavybottomed saucepan over a medium heat, with the vegetable oil and a good pinch of salt. Stir occasionally then, after 10 minutes, place a lid on top, turn the heat to low and cook for at least 30 minutes, until golden. ■ Once the lid is on the onions, drain the chana dal then transfer to a separate saucepan along with 1.5 litres of cold water and the
cardamom. Bring to the boil then reduce to a simmer for 45 minutes, skimming the foam that appears over the first 10 minutes or so. ■ Heat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/350°F. Wash and dry the kale, then tear into roughly 3-4cm pieces. Spread two thirds of it in one layer over a baking sheet, drizzle with the rapeseed oil, tumble, and then bake for 5-10 minutes until crisp but not browned. Salt generously and leave to cool. ■ Once the onions are golden, stir in the garlic and ginger and cook gently for 5 minutes, before adding the dry spices and chilli flakes. Add the tomatoes and water. Cook over a medium-high heat for 10 minutes to reduce. ■ Once the chana dal has been cooking for 45 minutes, add the onion and tomato mix along with the coconut, then simmer for a final 15 minutes, stirring regularly. ■ After that time, add water to achieve a consistency you enjoy, then throw in the remaining fresh kale and remove the saucepan from the heat. Leave to cool for 5 minutes, check the seasoning. ■ Serve each bowlful with a tablespoon of coconut, a heap of crispy kale, yoghurt and sliced chillies.

■ Rinse the rice under cold-running water, until the water draining through begins to clear, then transfer the grains to a heavy-bottomed saucepan. ■ Add the milk, vanilla pod and seeds, orange zest and salt, set over a medium heat and warm to a simmer, stirring occasionally to ensure the rice is not sticking. ■ Once simmering, reduce the heat to as low as possible. Place a lid on top, leaving it slightly ajar, and cook for 20-25 minutes, stirring at first occasionally, then over the last 5 minutes relatively
frequently as the ratio of liquid to rice reduces. Taste the rice. It should be almost cooked through, but still with a slight bite, and there should be a fair amount of liquid remaining. If not, add enough milk to loosen. ■ Pick out the strips of orange zest and the vanilla pod then stir in the sugar. Leave the rice to sit and swell further for 10 minutes with the lid on – returning a couple of times to give it a quick stir. ■ In the meantime, put the strawberries in a saucepan with the sugar, turning the fruit over so the sugar coats all surfaces. Heat gently at first until the sugar dissolves, then bring to a simmer and cook for 2 minutes, so the strawberries create a syrupy liquid and are softening but still bright red and intact. ■ Remove from the heat and set aside for 5 minutes. ■ Once rested for 10 minutes the rice should be soft and luscious, but a little stiff. Add 150ml of cream and stir that through. ■ Add a dash more cream if necessary. ■ Serve in shallow bowls, topped with the strawberry conserve.

Hi, Karim. How have you coped during the pandemic? It has been a strange year for everyone. I’ve had good days and bad days, but I’ve tried to count my blessings. I’ve been quite lucky as I did Celebs Go Dating and a cooking show during lockdown, so that kept me busy. Have you had to ramp up your fitness ahead of Here Come The Boys? Yes! I run and do sit-ups, and I ordered a pull-up bar. But as much as you do at home, your fitness only really comes back when you get to rehearsals. What can you tell us about the show? The main premise was that we want everyone to have fun. We want it to be like a massive party. Everyone in the show has different strengths. I’m hosting it but, of course, I’ll be dancing too. Instead of dance battles, it’s going to be a celebration of dance and music.
Do you feel nervous dancing alongside the professionals? Of course! I would have been extra nervous if I was joining a ballroom and Latin show, but because it’s dance in general and contains modern and street elements, I feel more at home. Are you all good friends? Yes, it’s such a great atmosphere and it’s an honour to work alongside such a good group. They are the best of the best. How do you deal with any pre-show nerves? I look at the audience straight away, to get it out the way. And I do breathing exercises. But as soon as I get going, I’m like a Duracell Bunny. How has your life changed since taking part in Strictly? It’s opened so many doors for me. I’ve been able to show the world the other tricks I’ve got under my belt – not many people knew I could dance!

Love Island 2017 winner Kem Cetinay, 25, confesses his love for Zac Efron
ALJAŽ ‘IT’S GOING TO BE THE BEST NIGHT OUT IN TOWN’ Hi Aljaž! What can we expect from Here Come The Boys? I’m so excited to get back to performing – and doing it with friends from Strictly makes it even better. Sharing a stage with them is going to be an absolute blessing. I’m going to say it – it’s going to be the best night out in town. We can imagine you guys will have lots of fun together… Absolutely. When I first joined Strictly, I was with Pasha [Kovalev] and Robin [Windsor], so I’ve know them for years and they’re beautiful friends. And then Graziano [Di Prima] joined us a little bit later and I’ve worked with him on the show for the last three years. And Karim was one of the best male contestants that Strictly has ever had. He’s also a great friend. Do you get competitive with your dance moves? We always do, but it’s only because we’re all so passionate about what we do. We care about our craft so much, it’s natural to get a bit competitive. But more than anything, it’s just great mates on stage having fun. Do you ever get stage fright? You get more confident the more performances you do, but I haven’t
been performing at all in the last year, so I am a little bit nervous to get back to it. But I hope that as soon as the curtain goes up, I’m going to be OK. I’m really counting on that! What was it like filming Strictly without a live audience? It was definitely different. All of us were just really happy and excited that the season went ahead, but not having the audience there was a little bit heartbreaking, because we love performing for people. How did you and your wife Janette [Manrara] find lockdown together? The beginning was heartbreaking – seeing so much being cancelled. But Janette and I have been together for 10 years, so it was lovely actually being at home together. I discovered I’m really good at doing nothing – I kind of smashed that! Do you and Janette want children in the future? We are so happy and excited to go back to what we love doing, which is performing. But we both love kids, so hopefully one day. What’s next for you? Well, Here Come The Boys is the first thing on my agenda. And then I’ve got Strictly, obviously! Strictly has been a highlight of my life for the last eight years. I can’t wait for it to start again. Here Come The Boys is at the London Palladium from 25 May to 9 June. The show also features Strictly dancer Nadiya Bychkova as a special guest. See lwtheatres.co.uk/theatres/ the-london-palladium
What’s your favourite TV show? I really like Friends. If I’m ever feeling anxious, I just leave it running in the background. And Line Of Duty – I love it! Are you a binge-watcher? Yeah, I binge everything. I don’t do anything half-heartedly. Which film is always guaranteed to make you cry? Marley & Me. I love dogs and I’m a very emotional person. I’m just like my dad. He cries at everything, even films that aren’t that sad. Do you like horror movies? No, I hate them. I don’t like being scared at all. I don’t want to put myself e’s no positive through it. There’s en people eat to it. It’s like when really spicy foodd – I don’t understand whyy they do it, le. it’s not enjoyable. MY LIFE MY RULES
MY PLAN B WAS that I didn’t have one. remember my I always remembe cousins saying to me, “What happens if you get hurt?” But I kn knew I would always find a With the male Strictly pros way. For me it’s abo about creating, so eve even if I wasn’t dancin I would have been in the dancing creat industry filming, directing creative pr or producing. IF TTHE WORLD WAS GOING TO EN TOMORROW, I’D let every END si single person I love know that I love them. It’s not a big list sso I’d get through that quite quickly. And then I’d go and do something I really wanted to do with no fear or thought. I’ve been surfing and snowboarding recently and really enjoy them.

The Strictly Come Dancing professional, e 39, opens up about the n biggest misconception m him about people have and learning how to n tattoo during lockdown
TTHE MOST IMPORTANT PE PEOPLE IN MY LIFE ARE my small circle of friends and, of co course, my family. I always keep m my circle small. You always have peopl people in your life who are acquaintance acquaintances or friends and then you have your bunc bunch who you’re always with.
MY HIDDEN TALENT IS sketching. I love to draw and I’ve always designed my tattoos. Then, during o lockdown, I started learning how to tattoo. I need a lot more practice but I’ve been practising on my own skin as I got myself the machine as an early birthday present. I started with a smiley face and then different writing on my right leg, and then I started an A4-size piece He’s a tattoo on my left leg, but I haven’t fan finished that yet. I’ve said to a few of my friends if they’re happy to get a small tattoo then I’ll give it a go on them and even uez] was Gorka [Márquez] joking I could tattoo him when we go on tour. My tattoo guy hass also said he will take me on as an apprentice, which is great.
THE ADVICE I’D GIVE TTO MY 16-YEAR-OLD SELF IS to invest. Invest in your time, in your money and your health. At school we get ge taught the things we need to be employees, wher whereas when I have kids I will definitely look at things in a different way through their education.
I LIKE TO CHILL ILL OUT BY watching a new movie with a pizza. I’m also trying really hard to cookk more because when I got my bill for fter the first Deliveroo after lockdown I realised I could have boughtt a house with the amount I spent!
