Ariana Grande’s Surprise Wedding! INSET: GETTY IMAGES

They’ve managed to keep their

romance largely under wraps for more than a year. And on May 15 Ariana Grande and her fiancé, Dalton Gomez, pulled off the nearly impossible: a secret wedding at her historic Tudor-style home in Montecito, Calif. “It was tiny and intimate—less than 20 people,” the pop star’s rep confirmed to People two days after the surprise nuptials. “The room was so happy and full of love. The couple and both families couldn’t be happier.”

But while waiting for the COVID-19 pandemic to subside, Grande and Gomez felt ready to become husband and wife. “She realized that she would rather have a smaller, more intimate wedding now,” adds the source. “She’s very happy they were able to pull it off quietly.” May 31, 2021

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills is back with a new castmate: Crystal Kung Minkoff, 38. The cofounder of the food and beverage company Real Coco talks about family, fashion and becoming the first Asian American on the show (airing Wednesday nights on Bravo). How did you end up on the show? I’ve known [fellow new Housewife] Kathy Hilton for 15 years. She told me she was thinking about [joining] and said she hoped I would too. I was like a deer in the headlights, but having Kathy there made me feel much better. Your husband [filmmaker Rob Minkoff, who directed 1994’s The Lion King] and kids appear on the show. What did they think? The kids aren’t shy. They had a good time. And Rob is a ham! I was excited to show his work. He’s done so many films. He deserves to shine. How did you decide what to wear?

It was a whole new world for me! Dorit [Kemsley] and Erika [Girardi] are fashion icons. I was like, “I need more sparkle!” I would constantly get inspired. How do you deal with the inevitable drama? I’m not an instigator, but if I feel like my integrity is being questioned, I can’t sit back. I have strong opinions like everyone else! The show tackles racial issues this season. What does that mean to you? There’s a huge honor and a responsibility to represent not only Chinese Americans but all AAPI. With the uprise of this anti-Asian hate, it’s a collective problem. Some of the conversations we had were really challenging, but the more conversations there are, the more understanding there will be. It’s not about being Asian, it’s about being human. —AILI NAHAS

J.Lo & Ben ‘in Touch Every Day’ Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are staying close from opposite coasts. Their weeklong getaway in Montana ended May 8, but the pair have kept “in touch every day,” says a source close to Lopez. She returned to Miami and Affleck to L.A., but “they are making plans to see each other,” adds the source. “Jennifer is still very excited about how things are going.” The stars—who were engaged for a little over a year before their 2004 split—got in touch in March when buzz began that Lopez, 51, had split from fiancé Alex Rodriguez, the source says. Affleck, 48, who broke up with Ana de Armas in January, “reached out to Jennifer as a friend. He was single and thought she might be single too.” After Lopez officially ended things with Rodriguez in April, she and Affleck reunited in L.A. “They connected right away,” says the source. “It made them both feel happy.”

NETFLIX | Army of the Dead

CLAY ENOS/NETFLIX

What happens in Vegas wants to escape from Vegas ACTION Directed by Zack Snyder (Justice League), Army of the Dead is a combination heist caper and zombie film—and maybe more. Among other things, it gives prominent display to an undead Las Vegas showgirl. In other words, this is a special film. Violent, exciting and fully aware of its absurdity, Army could be the new Starship Troopers. Dave Bautista heads up a motley crew—what else would they be but motley?— hired to clean out a vault inside a Vegas casino. Unfortunately, America’s Playground has been torn to bloody bits and abandoned because of a zombie infestation, now contained but not altogether quiescent: Although some of the zombies proved to be so witless

they allowed themselves to dry out and collapse in the punishing Vegas sun, a separate, smarter breed of alpha zombies—including that showgirl, who hasn’t lost all her glittery pizzazz—await the thieves. (Meanwhile, the President has decided to go ahead and end the city’s blight by launching a nuclear strike in just a few days’ time, on July 4.) Everyone communicates in grunts, snarls and growls, whether they’re monster or human—Tig Notaro, as a tough helicopter pilot, is probably the standout performer. Army of the Dead didn’t need to be 2 hours and 26 minutes. But people on roller coasters don’t get to call when the ride ends. (In theaters, R; launches on Netflix May 21)

DRAMA This is one of the bleaker stories of modern fashion. The creator of Jackie Kennedy’s pillbox hat, Halston became arguably the most important American couturier of the 1970s, but he lost artistic control of his line—and name—through a series of corporate buyouts and further damaged his creativity and reputation with drug abuse. He died of AIDS-related cancer in 1990, age 57. McGregor plays him well in this limited series, whirling in and out of showrooms and party palaces with swift, amusing sleekness. In the end, humbled by the wreckage, he’s rather touching. (Streaming now)

A terrific new talk talent

FROM TOP: GREG ENDRIES/SHOWTIME; NICKELODEON/PARAMOUNT+

COMEDY Ziwe, a Desus & Mero writer who became something of a star conducting interviews on an Instagram Live show, now gets her own TV vehicle—an uneven but very funny mash-up of celebrity one-on-ones, skits and faux commercials. Her performance, one would say, is as facetious as it is satiric: She takes on hot-button issues, but she doesn’t necessarily keep her finger on any of those buttons. She asks Fran Lebowitz, “What bothers you more, slow walkers or racism?” She also says: “I think all Black women are beautiful, and by all Black women I mean me.” (Sundays, 11 p.m.)

PARAMOUNT+ | Rugrats

FAMILY The popular Nickelodeon show, which spawned a hit movie in 1998, is back, this time with the raucously playful toddlers nicely spiffed up with CGI animation. Elizabeth’s husband, Richard Burton (left, at the 1964 premiere dinner for The Night of the Iguana), once quipped, “Monty, she likes me, but she loves you.”

one evening when his friends Jean and Fred Green met him at Elizabeth’s house for dinner. Jean recalled: “We decided to make an omelet. Monty was very drunk—and furious. He wanted to go out. Fred said, ‘No, we’re going to eat here.’ Monty took the eggs away from Fred and he started beating them and he spit into them over and over again.” By 1956 Elizabeth’s marriage to Wilding had “run its course.” Elizabeth told Monty she wanted him to star with her in the 1957 Civil War epic Raintree County. As her marriage had unraveled, Elizabeth was happy to have Monty close. She was having affairs and wanted a confidant who understood her. All day Monty would listen to Elizabeth’s version of the marital problems, her gripes and yearnings. On May 12, 1956, Monty took two tranquilizers, left a party at Elizabeth’s Hollywood Hills home and ended up crashing his car not far away. Elizabeth, Rock Hudson and others rushed to the scene, where Elizabeth clawed her way into the mangled car and cradled Monty’s “broken, battered head.” His face appeared to be torn in half. On seeing Elizabeth, Monty mumbled, “My teeth . . .” and started choking. He pantomimed that something was in his throat. “His front teeth were knocked out, and they were stuck in his throat,” actor Kevin McCarthy explained later. “She reached into his mouth and pulled those broken teeth out of his throat.” His blood painted Elizabeth’s white satin dress crimson and pooled in her skirt around Monty’s head in her lap. “I’m here. I’m with you, baby,” she said. Monty’s injuries altered his handsome face and worsened his substance abuse. While Elizabeth made her way through four marriages and blockbusters like 1963’s Cleopatra (with Richard Burton), Monty, whose own string of lovers included actor Jack Larson, was on a path to self-destruction. Not working was tearing Monty apart. Jack Larson came to stay with Monty for a while. “Sometimes, I would pass Monty’s bedroom. Monty

There are no photos of Elizabeth saving Monty’s life at the scene of his 1956 car crash because when photographers arrived, she screamed at them, “If any of you dare take a picture of him like this, I’ll never let you near me again!”

M o n t y ’s ‘Special Love’ Clift took this photo of his lover Jack Larson (who played Jimmy Olsen on TV’s Adventures of Superman). Larson remained a friend to the end, Casillo says.

would be sitting, scrooched on his sofa, crying.” Emaciated and barely lucid, Monty was uninsurable to work in films. Elizabeth, who would also struggle with addiction later in life, was determined to keep him working and insisted he be cast in her 1967 drama Reflections in a Golden Eye. Preproduction meetings were being held and no one was willing to take a risk on someone with Monty’s reputation. Elizabeth threw up her hands and exclaimed, “Bloody hell! I’ll put up the insurance money!” There was a stunned silence. . . . Monty was astonished. So many people abandoned him, but not her. Not his Bessie Mae. Before filming in 1966 even began, Monty died of a heart attack caused, in part, by his longtime substance abuse. Years later, when Elizabeth mounted her crusade to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic, Jack Larson recognized their old friend Monty as the heart of her cause. “A big reason Elizabeth became an AIDS activist was her conviction that had Monty lived, he could have easily contracted HIV,” said Jack Larson. “Elizabeth did it for Monty and, in essence, all her gay friends.”

David Schwimmer slowly enters Stage 24 on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank and laughs to himself. More than 17 years has passed since he last set foot in Joey and Chandler’s bachelor pad. Or walked across the hall into Monica’s spacious rent-controlled apartment. Or plopped down on the thrift-store-find orange couch that was always reserved for a close-knit group of friends at Central Perk coffee shop. The actor, 54, is taken aback by the sight of the meticulously re-created sets in front of him. “Wow. This is beautiful,” he says softly. One by one his five former costars arrive at the soundstage and join Schwimmer, overcome by their emotions. Lisa Kudrow, 57, makes a beeline to hug Schwimmer before taking it all in. Moments behind them, Jennifer Aniston, 52, has already started crying. “It’s amazing. . . . Holy crap,” she says. “All right, well, where’s the tissue box?” Matt LeBlanc, 53, helps Courteney Cox, 56, wipe

away her tears as well. The last to come through the door, Matthew Perry, 51, wanders over. “Could you be any later?” Aniston teases. Any momentary awkwardness—more a nonverbal recognition of too much time gone by—quickly dissipates as the six actors fall back into familiar rhythms. “This is incredible,” says Schwimmer, looking around. “Yeah,” adds Cox. “It really is.” When Friends premiered in 1994, the premise was simple: a sitcom about a group of twentysomethings finding their way in the world together. By the time the series ended 10 seasons later, it was one of television’s highest-rated shows of all time. Who could resist watching the buildup to Ross and Rachel’s first kiss or singing along to Phoebe’s “Smelly Cat”? Famous lines from “How you doin’?” and “We were on a break!” to “Moo point” and “Pivot!” have become a vernacular for generations of fans who have continued to fall for the sextet as the show aired in syndication and on streaming services. “All of us working together was like lightning in a bottle,” says Cox. “It’s so rare to have that kind of writing and that kind of chemistry between six people.” For the castmates, who had all been together only once since the finale (at a 2019 dinner at Cox’s house), reuniting for two days to film Friends: The Reunion—a nonscripted celebration of the NBC series premiering on HBO Max on May 27—was more than a year in the making. well, the longest break ever. The actors have gone on to have their own distinctive careers—as well as marriages, divorces and children—but through it all they’ve remained bonded. “It’s funny. When we do get together, it’s like no time has passed,” LeBlanc says. “We pick up right where we left off.” The six stars sat down with People from the reunion set to talk about memories of the beloved show, their friendships now and how they know (that we know that they know) the moments they created together were magic.

Original Friends production designer John Shaffner’s marching orders for the HBO Max reunion show were clear: Re-create the set exactly the way it had been during the last season of the series. Fortunately most everything had been archived or used in the studio tour at Warner Bros. “I would say we got about 75 percent of the furnishings from the boys’ and the girls’ apartment. And almost everything from the coffeehouse because it was in the museum,” he says. Past photos, shopping and a little creativity filled in the rest. “As much trouble as it was to accomplish, I think it was brilliant.”

hang, and that made 10 years incredible. I mean, we’re so grateful, and these friendships right here have remained just as close and supportive. ANISTON Yeah, it goes so beyond the work and what the show was, which was, in and of itself, just a spectacular phenomenon, but the friendships and family that came out of it is just—you can’t put words to that, really. It’s priceless. COX It’s really easy. And it’s really open. ANISTON Family. It’s like a family. I don’t have sisters. It’s what I would assume sisters are like. KUDROW Yeah. And I know that I can text or call, and I feel like we can pick up right where we left off, and no time’s passed. We’re connected no matter what. ANISTON No matter what, till death do us part. MATTHEW PERRY For [the guys, the chemistry] was just goofy, stupid, lame, funny. LEBLANC Like siblings, I would say. Very supportive.

struggled with different obstacles and challenges. And I think in those times it’s been nice to be able to reach out and touch base and have a call. And, I mean, I’m speaking for myself, because I’m the only one who doesn’t live in California. I live in New York. So that’s been nice. We’ve only been together once, I believe, in the same room until yesterday. We’ve seen each other, like one or two people, or I know the girls get together often, but yeah, the whole cast hasn’t been together in quite some time. So it’s been really lovely. LEBLANC I think everybody sort of has a relationship like that in their life: You know that when you have a conversation with that person, it’s really heartfelt, it’s honest, it’s open. You know that there’s no ulterior motive. They’re significant relationships.

LIGHTNING ROUND!

Who was the first to ruin a scene by laughing? Cox: Lisa? Kudrow: Me. Aniston: Lisa. LeBlanc: Lisa or Jennifer. That’s a tie in my opinion. Kudrow: But it wasn’t detectable to the audience if Jennifer did it. LeBlanc: But she didn’t ask us what was detectable to the audience. Who was the first to flub their lines? Aniston: Lisa? Kudrow: Me. Always. Cox: Probably Lisa.

How has the show changed your lives? PERRY It changed my life in every way. I got the

show when I was a 24-year-old man; the show ended when I was 34. It formed my life. And it was the time of my life. SCHWIMMER For any struggling actor, which we all were, I mean, let’s face it—financial security is what you dream of, right? For the first seven years of trying to be an actor, I was also waiting tables—and everyone had their other jobs. So [10 seasons] was a huge gift and a relief. But on top of that, this cast in these roles and the collaborative spirit that the writers kind of invited, where we all were playing at the same level, I think was just a dream come true for all of us. And I think we all realized it really early on. We thought, “Holy crap, not only is this casting just perfect, but we all get along.” There’s not one person who the other five were like . . . I think? [Laughs] Unless I was it. LEBLANC [Whispers] This is awkward.

Who was the most emotional? Kudrow: Jennifer. Perry: Jennifer. Aniston: Yeah. LeBlanc: Yep. Yep. Don’t start crying, don’t start crying. Aniston: I’m not. I took a beta blocker. I am not kidding. Seriously! Yesterday was hard. [Laughs]

Did you take any mementos when the show wrapped? ANISTON A dress that Monica wore. I went into

her line of clothes, and I pulled it out, and I still have it and wear it to this day. It has tiny little flowers with a black lace V-neck and a little cap sleeve with a little slight ruffle of black lace. KUDROW I have Phoebe’s rings. COX I’m not a person who collects things. And then I regret. I’m actually going to steal something tonight. KUDROW I still have my badges, my security badge. ANISTON Wait, how did they let me on? I don’t think I ever had one. KUDROW Yes, you did. PERRY I stole the cookie jar that had the clock on

Which guest star would you have loved to bring back? Cox: Paul Rudd. Kudrow: Paul Rudd did come back. Hank Azaria came back a lot. Aniston: Reese Witherspoon. Schwimmer: Would have been fun to see Ben Stiller again. Aniston: Charlton Heston. Perry: Really? LeBlanc: Well, he was Moses.

Who were the biggest flirts with each other? LeBlanc: David and Jennifer. Kudrow: Jennifer and David. Cox: David and Jennifer. Perry: Yeah. Oh, was there a real crush going on? Schwimmer: Anyway, next question. Cox: In the beginning. Aniston: Next question.

How Prince Harry Inspired Me

“He settled into a team well,” Stott says of Harry (above, training in Yorkshire in 2007). Left: Stott at home in California.

When Dean Stott arrived for specialized military training one August day in 2007, he sensed something was different at the airfield in North Yorkshire, England. There seemed to be a greater number of vehicles around the base and more senior staff than usual. Stott soon learned why: Among their ranks was a young officer named Second Lieutenant Wales—aka Prince Harry. Like Stott, Harry, then 22, was undergoing training to be a forward air controller in the British Army, and when, at their first session, the royal raised his hand to ask if he would get a call sign, or code name, if he was successful in the course, Stott couldn’t resist a quip. “I sort of made a jokey comment, much to the dismay of the rest of the staff,” Stott recalls. “The sergeant major said, ‘You two are partnered up for the six weeks.’ ” So began a comradeship that would later reflect numerous parallels in their lives: After challenging teen years, both men found a calling in the military. Both fought in Afghanistan around the same time, and now, in their civilian lives, both have May 31, 2021

Before the summer of 2019. teenager Zephaniah Trevino—“Zephi” to friends and family—was living an average, normal life in the Dallas suburb of Grand Prairie, Texas. A fun-loving sophomore at Grand Prairie High School, who “lit up a room with her smile and laughter,” says her mom, Crystal Trevino, Zephi played softball and liked to hang out with her friends from church. But her family noticed changes in her as the school year ended— “That summer was pretty much like a hurricane,” recalls Crystal—as Zephi started losing weight, with dark circles appearing under her eyes and bruises showing up on her body. On the night of Aug. 3, 2019, Crystal remembers Zephi climbing onto the couch with her, crying and trying to bury herself under her mother. When Crystal asked what was wrong, Zephi wouldn’t answer. “I felt something was really bad,” Crystal remembers. “Something was really wrong.” It was much worse than Crystal imagined. Earlier on that day, authorities say, Zephi—along with Jesse Martinez, then 18, and Philip Baldenegro, 19—had taken part in a robbery that left one man dead from a gunshot wound and another injured. All three have now been arrested and charged with murder and aggravated robbery. “My heart literally fell to my stomach. I was sick,” Crystal says of the moment she learned of the charges against her daughter while in court after Zephi’s arrest. “I thought, ‘This has to be a mistake. This is the wrong person.’ ” But as details of the case began to emerge, there was no mistaking that Zephi, now 18, was at the scene of the shooting that killed Dallas resident Carlos Arajeni-Arriaza Morillo, 22, and injured —CRYSTAL Cristian Lobos, 18. Kindred Spirits Taylor and Clift (in 1950 at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles) “had this deep connection,” says author Charles Casillo. “They were soulmates.”

O

One of the most beautiful women of her era, screen goddess Elizabeth Taylor had men falling at her feet (and she married seven of them, including actor Richard Burton—twice). But one man she adored was forever beyond her reach, at least romantically: actor Montgomery Clift. At just 17, MGM’s former child star fell hard for the method actor from New York, who was 12 years her senior, while filming A Place in the Sun in 1949. So palpable was their onscreen chemistry that costar Shelley Winters “actually thought there was an affair going on,” says Charles Casillo, author of Elizabeth and Monty: The Untold Story of Their Intimate Friendship, excerpted here. Offscreen, the two bonded over their showbiz childhoods (“the first dab of glue that bound them together,” says Casillo) and shared a kiss or two, leading Elizabeth to proclaim she’d found the

man of her dreams. But Monty’s love was platonic. “He couldn’t bring himself to tell her that he was gay,” Casillo says. “As Elizabeth started dating other men, Monty felt more comfortable in letting her know he was gay, and then they had no secrets between them.” The lifelong friends would go on to star in two more films together, leaning on each other during their toughest times— her serial marriages and scandalous affairs; his losing struggle with addiction to drugs and alcohol, which was fueled, in part, by having to hide his sexuality in then-homophobic Hollywood. That, says Casillo, “played into his unhappiness.” When Monty died in 1966 at age 45, “a piece of herself was gone,” Casillo says of Elizabeth, who went on to fight homophobia and, later, the AIDS epidemic that ravaged the gay community and beyond. “She and Monty were true soulmates.”

FRIENDS ONSCREEN & OFF Mutual Support

Researching the pair (on a lunch break on the set of Raintree County in 1957), author Casillo says he learned “how much influence each one had on the other’s life.”

Elizabeth (in 1950), whom he called Bessie Mae, “was someone Monty could have a good time with and really be himself around,” says Casillo.

Inside Story

Casillo’s book plumbs the stars’ lasting connection. “Elizabeth once said, ‘We reveal things to each other that we never could tell anyone else,” he says.

ing love, he’d panic and pull away,” she confessed. He couldn’t bring himself to tell Elizabeth he was gay. Instead, he started showing up on the set with young men he had picked up the night before, making it obvious that they had been intimate. In denial, Elizabeth would plead with Monty to marry her. “No, Bessie, it wouldn’t be right,” he’d reply. At 18, she instead wed Conrad “Nicky” Hilton Jr. MGM considered the May 1950 wedding perfect publicity for her next film, Father of the Bride, opening that June. When the marriage lasted just eight months, Monty consoled her. She learned to love him as a friend, and that love was very deep. Elizabeth finally said to him, “Look, Monty, whatever you want from me, I’m always here for you.” Elizabeth wed British actor Michael Wilding in 1952. Monty, despite the success of From Here to Eternity in 1953, spiraled into substance abuse. Monty was spending a great deal of time with Elizabeth and Wilding, staying with them at their house in the Hollywood Hills. Those were still some good times. But the bad times were happening more often. Drinking and pill popping would turn Monty from a charming, dignified man into a childlike monster. Monty’s Jekyll-and-Hyde antics were on display

When they first met to make A Place in the Sun, 29-year-old Monty showed 17-year-old Elizabeth what it was to be a serious actor. “At first, I felt very much the inadequate teenage Hollywood puppet . . . I started to listen and realize acting was more than saying some lines. It was something that could make this man shake from head to toe with emotion,” she later said. Every night, they would get together to go over the following day’s scenes. “Monty coached Elizabeth more than the director did,” said his longtime acting coach Mira Rostova. Elizabeth was falling for him. She started inviting Monty to join her in the bathroom—to talk—while she bathed. Monty would sit on the edge of the tub and, to her astonishment, they would actually talk—and joke and laugh. Monty didn’t seem to be distracted by Elizabeth’s naked body and for the first time, a man had noticed her talent, her interests. (He wasn’t completely oblivious. He later rhapsodized to a friend about her “magnificent [breasts].”) Monty couldn’t fully reciprocate her feelings. Elizabeth wanted to lose her virginity to Monty, and she let him know she was available. “But just when he overcame all his inhibitions about mak-

one evening when his friends Jean and Fred Green met him at Elizabeth’s house for dinner. Monty

There are no photos of Elizabeth saving Monty’s life at the scene of his 1956 car crash because when photographers arrived, she screamed at them, “If any of you dare take a picture of him like this, I’ll never let you near me again!”

would be sitting, scrooched on his sofa, crying.” Emaciated and barely lucid, Monty was uninsurable to work in films. “Elizabeth did it for Monty and, in essence, all her gay friends.”

ith five young children at home, Bode and Morgan Miller have come to think of chaos as a comfort zone. And on this sunny afternoon at the family’s Orange County, Calif., home, chaos definitely reigns. Eight-year-old Nate (Bode’s son from a prior relationship) and 6-yearold Nash are shooting basketballs and jumping on the trampoline in the backyard, while 18-monthold twins Asher and Aksel are creating havoc in the kitchen—and 2-year-old Easton is upstairs trying to nap through it all. Suddenly Nash, wearing only his underpants, dashes into the family room. “Can I go next door?” he asks. “We’re going to the beach; go put your shirt on,” replies Bode, 43. “And go eat some snacks,” adds Morgan, 34. Nash pretends to be confused. “Mommy, what do you mean by ‘eat’?” he says, rubbing his tummy with a grin. “Holy cow!” says Morgan, bursting into laughter. “There’s apples and peanut butter. Now go!” The past year has been a happy one for the Millers despite the pandemic. The Olympic gold medalist (Bode is the most successful male Alpine skier in U.S. history) and Morgan, a former pro volleyball player and model, have spent much of their time in lockdown with their kids at their home near Big Sky, Mont., and this past March, Morgan learned she was pregnant with the couple’s sixth child, who’s due in November. (Bode also has daughter Dace, 13, from a prior relationship.) “We found out at, like, three and a half weeks, and we’ve just been rolling with it,” says Morgan. “We both just knew that we had more space in our hearts to give more love.” Although the sex reveal is still a week away, Morgan admits that, with five boys and just one girl between them, she and Bode are hoping for another girl. “All of our kids are so unique, and it’s always a surprise,” says Bode, “but I think after losing Emmy we both felt we wanted to try for a girl.” It was just three years ago, in June 2018, that the Millers lost their 19-month-old daughter Emeline after she drowned in a neighbor’s backyard pool. Heartbroken, the couple have since turned their

The couple met while Morgan was competing in a Fort Lauderdale volleyball tournament in May 2012—and the New Hampshire-raised Bode was immediately smitten. It took him five tries to persuade the Newport Beach, Calif., native to go out with him, but by October they were married. Nash was born in 2015, and Bode retired from racing not long after Emmy’s birth in November 2016. (Easton arrived in 2018, and the twins followed in late 2019.) While time has helped heal the pain of Emmy’s death, the devastating memories of that afternoon

on June 9, 2018, are never gone. “It’s not something you can ever get away from,” says Morgan, who had dropped by their neighbor’s house with Emmy and was having tea when she suddenly noticed her rambunctious little girl was nowhere in sight. “I’ve replayed it in my head over and over,” she says. “All of a sudden I realized it was too quiet.” Morgan frantically searched for the toddler, who’d wandered out through an open door to the backyard. “She was in the shallow end of the pool. I jumped in and grabbed her; she still had a pulse.” Paramedics arrived and rushed the little girl to the hospital, where she died the next day. “There’s still so much that seems like yesterday,” says Bode. “And then there’s parts that really start to feel like a long time ago.” Determined to give meaning to Emmy’s death, the Millers embarked on a nationwide campaign to educate parents and officials about kids and water safety (see box). “This is something that’s completely preventable,” says Morgan. With hundreds of U.S. children falling victim to drowning accidents each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the couple have advocated for legislation requiring pool fences with childproof alarms and locks, and for swimming lessons to be a mandatory safety measure (“The way they did with car seats,” says Bode)—covered by health or homeowner’s insurance. “If kids can crawl, they need to know how to float,” says Morgan. “And if they can walk,

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, hundreds of children aged 1 to 4 die from drowning each year. Bode and Morgan are determined to do what they can to change that. “The most important thing a parent can do is get your child equipped to deal with water,” says Morgan. “We start our kids at 6 months.” But swimming lessons are only part of the solution, the couple say. Equally important is

they need to know how to swim. . . . It’s about arming your children with the tools to navigate that situation—because it’s the deadliest place they can be.”

making sure that pools are properly fenced in and equipped with alarms and locks that a child can’t reach. Being vigilant whenever you’re near a pool or open water with children is also crucial. “If you’re ever missing a child, the first place you should always look is the water because every second counts,” says Morgan. Adds Bode: “This is a problem we can solve—or at least mitigate the risks, if we take the right steps.”

Morgan. “We’re lucky that we both get to be at home and this was a move we could make.” During the pandemic, the house became an extended-family compound with Morgan’s older sister, her husband and their three kids moving in as well. “We skied a lot together; it’s a great outdoorsy, kind of quarantined sport,” says Bode, who remains involved in his Turtle Ridge Foundation, which creates adaptive sports programs for disabled youth, and is developing an online winter sports academy. These days the Millers are focused on the future—and welcoming their new baby. “Having a baby is an amazing process, where your heart just gets bigger and you find more love to give,” says Morgan, who’s also planning to launch a wellness and fitness website, Simplemom, for new moms in the coming months. As they have with all of their kids, the couple are planning on a home birth. “We always have a backup plan,” says Morgan, “but there is something so magical about having our babies at home and being surrounded by our kids.” For the Millers, of course, that includes Emmy, whom they keep very much a part of their lives. Last month the family gathered on the beach and released dozens of butterflies in memory of the little girl. “She’s still part of our family,” says Morgan. “She still gets Easter baskets, her pictures are everywhere, and her room is still here. Her closet is still full. Occasionally she still gets a few new pieces in there. . . . The lessons that we learned from her, and the memories that we share—the love never goes away.”

Both fought in Afghanistan around the same time, and now, in their civilian lives, both have May 31, 2021

continued to support veterans’ causes. Then in October, Dean, 44, and his wife, Alana, 38, followed in the footsteps of Harry and his wife, Meghan, and resettled their young family—including kids Mollie, 9, and Tommy, 4—in California. “I never saw Harry as a member of the royal family but as a soldier and officer,” says Stott. “I really got to see the Harry people haven’t seen. That’s how we bonded.” Stott’s own journey could not have started more differently from the prince’s. After his parents divorced when he was 8, he and his two sisters spent time living in a homeless shelter in “the roughest place in Manchester in the mid-’80s,” he says. “From a young age, I was learning how to use my fists on the playground, protecting me and my sisters.” He found a way out in the military. the Royal Engineers at 17, he served as a paratrooper commando before being accepted to the Special Boat Service (the U.K. version of the Navy SEALS). From there, he served a tour of Afghanistan around the same time as Harry. But in 2010 Stott was injured in a parachute accident during training. Alana— whom he met in 2009 and wedded in 2013—recalls that when Dean realized he would have to leave his military career, he “felt guilty and resentful.” While Harry went off to fly Apache helicopters on a second tour of Afghanistan, Stott had to find a new purpose. By now he was running a security consulting firm, but—facing what he calls a midlife crisis—he was looking for a challenge. So he took up cycling, aiming to break the world record for biking the 14,000-mile-long Pan-American Highway from southern Argentina to Alaska. He told Harry, and the pair decided to use the challenge to raise money for the royals’ Heads Together mental health campaign. “Every time I got through a country, I would text [Harry] and let him know,” he says. “He would say, ‘Keep going.’ ” After arriving in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, on May 12, 2018—smashing what was then the record by 17 days—he rushed back to the U.K. to attend Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle. “It was amazing,” says Alana. At the reception, “Harry said, ‘Does anybody know how to play the piano?’ and I looked at Dean and almost said, ‘Don’t put your hand up!’ And then Elton John put his hand up.” Now, as the couple set up their new life in Lake Forest, Calif., they are growing their private security business and setting their sights on Dean’s next adventure, a kayaking trip on the Nile to highlight areas of need in Africa. They’re also looking forward to welcoming Harry and Meghan’s new daughter soon. For both families, life today is full of   “opportunity,” says Stott. “The kids come in with big smiles. We are shouting from the rooftops.”

New Mood

Living in Montecito, “I can actually lift my head,” Harry told Shepard and Padman. “I feel different. My shoulders have dropped.”

HARRY’S CANDID NEW INTERVIEW Speaking with Dax Shepard and Monica Padman on the May 13 episode of the Armchair Expert podcast to promote his new AppleTV+ series The Me You Can’t See, Harry, 36, opened up about pain, therapy and how Meghan helped him heal

COURTESY: ARMCHAIR EXPERT

On Life as a Royal [It’s] a mix between The Truman Show and being in the zoo. The biggest issue for me was that being born into it, you inherit every element of it, without choice. It’s the job, right? Just grin and bear it. In my early 20s it was a case of “I don’t want this job, I don’t want to be here, I don’t want to be doing this. Look what it did to my mum. How am I ever gonna settle down, have a wife and a family, when I know that it’s gonna happen again?” Because I’ve seen behind the curtain. I’ve seen the business model. On Breaking the Cycle of ‘Genetic Pain’ I don’t think we should be pointing the finger or blaming anybody. But certainly, when it comes to parenting, if I’ve experienced some form of pain or suffering because of the pain or suffering that perhaps my father or my parents had suffered, I’m going to make

sure that I break that cycle so that I don’t pass it on . . . . There’s a lot of genetic pain and suffering that gets passed along. I started to piece it all together and go . . . so that means that he’s treated me the way that he was treated, which means how can I change that for my own kids? On Therapy and Seeking Help It was a conversation that I had with my now wife. She could tell that I was hurting and that some of the stuff that was out of my control was making me really angry. . . . Once I started doing therapy, it was like the bubble was burst. I plucked my head out of the sand and gave it a good shake off, and I was like, “You’re in this position of privilege, stop complaining and stop thinking you want something different—make this different. How are you going to do these things differently? How are you going to make your mum proud and use this platform to really effect change?” . . . I want to share my story

to hopefully help other people . . . .  I realized that helping other people helped me. On Unconscious Bias Having had the upbringing and the education that I have, I had no idea what [unconscious bias] was. I had no idea it existed. Sad as it is to say, it took me many, many years to realize it, especially then living a day or a week in my wife’s shoes. On His Courtship with Meghan The first time that Meghan [came to] stay with me, we met up in a supermarket in London pretending as though we didn’t know each other. So we texted each other from the other side of the aisle. There were people giving me all these weird looks, and I was there texting, saying, “Is this the right one?” And she was like, “No, you want parchment paper.” I’m like, [whispers] “Where’s the parchment paper?”

Priyanka Chopra Jonas’s restaurant, Sona, opened its doors in Manhattan in March, while strict COVID-19 restrictions were still in place. That didn’t stop diners from quickly snatching up reservations and buzzing about the eatery’s chic decor (inspired by India’s art deco period) and executive chef Hari Nayak’s delicious menu that celebrates cuisines from the different regions of the Indian subcontinent. From masala-stuffed chicken wings to these crispy, stuffed samosas, the food showcases “the flavors I grew up with,” said the actress.

1. Preheat oven to 425°. Heat oil in a skillet over medium. Add onion; cook, stirring often, until softened, about 3 minutes. Stir in garam masala and turmeric. Add spinach; cook, stirring constantly, until wilted, 1 minute. Drain mixture in a sieve, pressing with the back of a spoon to remove as much moisture as possible. Place spinach mixture in a bowl. Add goat cheese, pine nuts, salt, pepper and one of the eggs; stir to combine. 2. Cut each phyllo dough sheet in half lengthwise to make two 10x3-inch strips (16 strips total); immediately cover with plastic wrap and a damp cloth. 3. To assemble: Take 1 phyllo strip, and brush with melted butter. Place 1⁄ 2 tablespoon of spinach filling at bottom right side of the dough. Fold corner of dough over to enclose filling and to form a triangle. Continue folding, maintaining triangle shape, using the whole strip. Repeat process with remaining dough, butter and filling. 4. Place samosas on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Lightly beat remaining egg. Brush samosas with egg; sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake until golden brown, 16 to 18 minutes. Makes: 16 Active time: 30 minutes Total time: 45 minutes

Like many others, Moby found himself trying to ease the loneliness brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic in the past year by filling his life in new ways. “I’ve become a plant hoarder,” the 55-yearold musician says over Zoom from his L.A. home. “I planted more trees around my house so that every window only looks out at trees. I live in Southern California, but I can pretend that I live in the Pacific Northwest—without the rain.” Moby planted new roots on the West Coast shortly after he got sober in 2008 following decades of addiction. At the height of his success as the king of electronic dance music, he says, depression and out-ofcontrol alcohol, cocaine and prescription pill abuse drove him to think about suicide: “I was anxious, angry and panicking because I couldn’t figure out how to be happy.” He dives into his turbulent past in a new documentary, Moby Doc (in theaters and on digital platforms May 28). In tandem with the film, he’s releasing his new album Reprise, in which he revisits his hits with the Budapest Art Orchestra. “It’s paradoxical, in a way, to be who I am right now, which is kind of boring, happy and middle-aged, and look back 20 years ago to when I was selfish, narcissistic and addicted to alcohol and drugs,” he says. “I look at that person, and I don’t recognize him.”

TRAVIS SCHNEIDE

Fame came fast for Moby in 1991 after he released a

remix of his song “Go” using the strings from the Twin Peaks theme song. “One minute I’m picking up cans to return to the Food Emporium for money for groceries,” he says, “and the next I have a Top 10 single in between Michael Jackson and Phil Collins.” That success was something Moby (born Richard Melville Hall) longed for ever since he was a young boy. He was raised in affluent Darien, Conn., by his mother, Elizabeth, a legal secretary, after his alcoholic father died driving drunk when Moby was just 2. He often felt like an outcast. “I was the only kid in school who would buy clothes at Goodwill and food with food stamps,” says Moby. At 10, he had his first sip of alcohol when his friend’s mom passed him a glass of champagne at a New Year’s Eve party. Then, he says, he began stealing alcohol from liquor cabinets and experimenting with drugs to impress his friends. After an LSD-induced panic attack forced him to drop out of college at 19, Moby moved into an abandoned factory and started deejaying in clubs around New York City, making a name for himself in the techno and house music scene. “If you told me as a teen that I would be signed to a big record label, be making money and be famous, I would have thought, ‘Wow, I will be

STILL ROCKING

Two months after getting sober in October 2008, he played a New Year’s Eve deejay set in Los Angeles.

He stepped out from behind the deejay booth to show off his guitar skills in Brooklyn in 2018.

“It’s a hard place because no one wants to listen to an affluent public figure complaining. But when you can’t figure out how to make yourself happy and you rely on alcohol and drugs, for a lot of people the only answer is [suicide],” he says. “I’m glad I didn’t figure out how to end my life.”

Nearly two decades later, Moby says he feels deep

gratitude for his now “monastic” life in L.A. After multiple failed attempts at sobriety, he had a moment of clarity while on the train home from an event in 2008. “I played a fundraiser and then got very drunk after and did a ton of drugs,” he says. “As I was taking Amtrak back into the city, this voice in my head said, ‘You’re done.’ ” He began attending 12-step meetings and entered therapy for the first time—things he’s remained committed to for the past 13 years. “I started recognizing that fame and material success weren’t going to fix my psychological and emotional issues,” he says. “I’m actually quite happy with the simple things: hiking, sitting outside and looking at the trees I’ve planted. When you’ve spent your whole life struggling and pursuing grander things, it’s hard to realize these things have the ability to deliver that much happiness.” A vegan since 1985, he also found a renewed passion for life by focusing on animal-rights activism, fighting against factory farming and advocating for shelter pets. “I remember reading this interview with the Dalai Lama, and he was talking about how happiness comes from service,” he says. “I’ve realized he’s absolutely right.” Now he’s sharing his struggles to help others. “I’ve really appreciated other people telling their honest stories,” he says. “I’m telling mine in the hope that people will feel less alone. I’m so grateful to have a purpose that’s higher than myself.”

the happiest person ever,’ ” he says. “I was wrong.” His 1999 album Play launched eight hit singles and became the biggest electronica album of all time, selling more than 12 million copies. But even with so much in his grasp, including a friendship with his hero David Bowie, he fell deeper into depression and struggled with anxiety and panic attacks. “That’s why I drank more and did more drugs,” he says. “And I started thinking about killing myself.” On his lowest nights he drank 20 beers and blew a couple of hundred dollars on cocaine. In the mornings he popped Xanax and Vicodin to get him through the “miserable” hangovers. In Barcelona for the MTV Europe Music Awards in 2002, Moby felt pushed to the brink. “I was like, ‘I’ve had a career. I’m unhappy. I’m a lonely alcoholic,’ ” he says of the moment he considered jumping out of his hotel room window. What stopped him was that the windows didn’t open wide enough. “I was even annoyed at that,” he says in his new doc. “Like, ‘Wow, I can’t even kill myself.’ ” Looking back, Moby says he’s learned to give himself grace.

For Rose Byrne, getting into character for her new show Physical, a dark comedy set in the early ’80s, started from the outside in—and required lots of Lycra. “When I first looked at the costumes, I thought, ‘Are you crazy?’ ” says the actress, 41, who stars as Sheila Rubin, a dutiful yet tormented housewife who discovers a passion for aerobics. “But we had these sparkly sheer tights that dancers wear, so I didn’t feel too naked.” To play Sheila, who is plagued by inner demons and a toxic relationship with her body, Byrne dug deep. “It’s partly about the inner destruction that women do to themselves, and it’s so shameful and personal,” she says. “Sheila’s ambition has been dulled, but she definitely still wants a seat at the table. And I found it all very fascinating and intriguing.” — A I L I N A H A S

COVID-19 VACCINE UPDATE

Children and t h e Va c c i n e WITH KIDS 12 TO 15 YEARS OLD NOW ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE THEIR SHOTS, HERE’S W H AT YO U N E E D TO K N O W

A

After clinical trials found that Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine is 100 percent effective in adolescents 12 to 15 years old, the Centers for Disease Control and the Food and Drug Administration approved inoculations for the age group, putting the country one step closer to the end of the pandemic. Here pediatrician and People Health Squad member Dr. Elizabeth Murray answers our questions:

80

May 31, 2021

Shots in Arms One day after Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine was approved for his age group, Julian Boyce, 14, got his first dose at a hospital in New York City.

A Fa m i l y A f fa i r

Murray, a specialist in pediatric emergency medicine and mom of two girls, ages 11 and 4, says her children “will receive the vaccine as soon as they’re eligible.”

Should this vaccine be spaced out with other vaccinations, like meningitis? Health groups are specifically saying that we do not need to space them out. Kids need to have their regular vaccinations, and we want to make sure they’re getting them while also adding the COVID-19 vaccine to the mix. How can parents encourage their kids to get vaccinated? Kids, I think, already want to help. Tweens are doers; they want to be part of the action and do the right thing. They want to help everybody be safe and also get back to hanging out with friends and going to school in person. — J U L I E M A Z Z I O T T A

RICHARD DREW/AP/SHUTTERSTOCK

Considering kids are at a lower risk of severe COVID-19, do they need to be vaccinated? The concept of children not being impacted as severely by COVID-19 infection simply is not true. Children are about 25 percent of the population: Millions have been infected, thousands hospitalized and hundreds have died. Further, we know that COVID-19 infection hurts the function of some children’s hearts, and we don’t know how long those and other side effects will last. What are the side effects of the vaccine like for kids, and how should parents prepare them? So far the data shows that it’s about the same as it is for adults. They’re probably going to have some sore arms and muscle aches and fever, and there’s going to be a lot of variability: While some people aren’t bothered by it, others feel gross for a day. Parents can help their kids feel better with overthe-counter medications and added rest. But because kids are always getting their shots, they’re pretty good at handling vaccines. What about allergic reactions? If allergic reactions are going to happen, it’ll usually be very quickly, and that’s why we’re always observing people after this vaccination. Any place that is vaccinating people is prepared to handle allergic reactions. The risk is very, very low.

Yearwood says she and Brooks (in 2019) will feel extra “grateful” when they’re able to perform live again.

I love being a “bonus mom” .  .  .

I had a dog before I married Garth [in 2005] but no children of my own. I never even really babysat! So I didn’t know what to do with three young girls. [Garth’s daughters, Taylor, August, and Allie, with ex-wife Sandy Mahl, are now 28, 27 and 24, respectively.] He was such a wonderful mentor to me as to how to be a parent, and the girls have given me a lot of grace. They were a gift that I didn’t know I needed. Mealtime is quality time  .  .  . Garth and I have eaten all our meals together this past year. We realized it was important back when our girls were starting to drive. Getting three teenagers together at once is almost impossible, so we started having “veggie night” to try to get more vegetables in their diet. They loved it, and some of the best conversations happened around that table. I keep my beauty routine simple  .  .  .

I slept in my makeup so many times as a young girl—I’d wake up with my eyes Fe a r l e s s glued together with mascara! Now Legacy I don’t go to bed without washing my “My mom [Gwen, who died face. It feels good to get to this place.

SAM JONES/TRUNK ARCHIVE

Last game I played I play a game called Code Names once a week on Zoom with a group of friends. If I start getting competitive, it ruins it for me. I don’t want that pressure. Last time I faced a fear I have a fear of heights, and it goes into irrational when I have to go up into [tall] buildings. The thing that helps me feel calm is if I look at other people’s faces, like, “Well, they’re not worried.” Last thing I took from a set I always take one call sheet, and I keep them in storage boxes. When I’m 80, I want to look at the piles of these call sheets and go, “Oh yeah, I remember that.” Last time I was missing someone I miss my mom and dad. My dad lives in North Carolina; my mom lives in suburban New York. And for obvious reasons, I haven’t seen them in a very long time. Hopefully that can change next month with the vaccine. Last guilty pleasure I really try to not eat sweets. I was just in England and I came back and found cookies in my refrigerator. One is fine. But the problem is, the rest of them are sitting there, and I have a radar. It nags at me. I had one. Isn’t that enough? And my body says, “No. No, it’s not.”
