He was a building block of the company. Years later, he was there for them again. Andre joined our company 45 years ago, before we built our first sailboat. I was a young man at the time and though Andre eventually left to pursue his fortunes elsewhere, we were never out of touch. Many years later, after the sale of one of our divisions, some of the most notable advisors and trust companies smelled opportunity and came after the money. That’s when we received a simple, caring letter from Andre reminding us that he was at a company that could help. His words showed us that while everyone else was focused solely on the money, he was concerned about our family now and for generations that follow. Andre understood the magnitude of the little things. — Tom, Holland, MI

y nonfishing friends can’t see the point of running 100-plus miles to a seemingly random spot, then spending all day crisscrossing the abyss at idle speed, waiting for something to happen. They think about me staring out the back of the boat at cobalt water that stretches to infinity, and they ask: “How do you do that? It sounds so boring.” ¶ To me, trolling across the deep is the most sublime, relaxing thing in the world. At the same time, it’s unpredictable and can be explosively exciting. ¶ Case in point: A couple of summers back, our crew ran my buddy’s Viking 50 Open to one of those random spots. The blue sky met the blue water over the horizon. It was calm, quiet and scorching hot—even by mid-August standards—but we all had a feeling. This spot was fishy. There wasn’t another boat in sight; we actually didn’t see another boat all day. If there were fish around, we had the only baits in the water. ¶ The spread looked enticing. Double dredges rigged with ballyhoo swam and shimmered below the surface, replicating fish on the move. Two daisy-chain teasers skipped along the surface, creating some noise. The two

flat-line baits, four outrigger baits and a shotgun bait with a plug all ran in clean lanes. Soon after we set out the spread, the right long-rigger went off. I picked up the rod, and we made quick work of catching and releasing a hatchet marlin. If that was all that had happened that day, we would have been happy—but there were more. ¶ Shortly after lunch, we saw a dorsal fin pierce the sea’s surface and shoot across the spread from left to right. It was a blue marlin. It went after the teasers, so we yanked those out of the water. Pulled out the dredges too. It dropped back and whacked at the short-rigger baits with its bill, knocking them out. This magnificent fish was lit up and acting maniacal. It ran up to the flat lines and then dropped back again, finally committing to the shotgun. The fish greyhounded toward the Azores. ¶ For 45 minutes, we gave chase. Our angler, Kevin, cranked up the lost line. Our mate, Roddy, eventually wired the marlin to within several feet of the transom, then noticed that the swivel from the main line to the leader had opened during the fight. Another crewmember, Chuck, dove in to secure the swivel. Roddy continued to bring the fish boatside. ¶ The marlin taped out at around 110 inches, and we released it back to the deep. Nothing boring about that.

Sweden-based X Shore recently introduced its Eelex 8000, an all-electric dayboat built with sustainable materials. Power for the Eelex 8000 is a 225-kilowatt electric motor and a 120 kWh battery. The builder reports that the boat cruises around 21.7 knots and tops out at about 35 knots. Range at cruise speed is about 40 miles. The measurable torque provided by the vessel’s powerplant setup helps get the boat from zero to 17.4 knots in 4.2 seconds. Standard recharge time is around six hours. The builder offers 15 layout options and three color choices for the hull. The helm has room for a 24-inch multifunction display. Build materials include cork, reused plastic, recycled bottles and flax.

he idea for the deepest-diving acrylic submersible in the world—able to descend more than 13,000 feet—started with thickness. ¶ “Acrylic, up until a few years ago, had been really restricted in how thick you could make it,” says John Ramsay, principal design engineer at Triton Submarines. The difference between the Triton 3300/3 (able to take three people to about 3,300 feet)
that launched a decade ago and the new 13000/2 Titanic Explorer is acrylic about three times thicker. “We discovered that we could go much deeper with the new technology.” ¶ Being able to go deeper meant thinking about new features. The traditional Triton design has pontoons on each side of the sphere. They’re great for surface buoyancy, but they create resistance that’s problematic when descending or ascending from deeper

Because the gull-wing doors swing through 90 degrees, the skipper can use the mounted thrusters to help the sub achieve vertical or sideways motion.
The idea for the deepest-diving acrylic submersible in the world—able to descend more than 13,000 feet—started with thickness. depths. ¶ And, Ramsay says: “When you’re in those depths, you’re getting into a really silty bottom on the seabed. When you land down, if the thrusters are anywhere near the seabed, it stirs everything up and you end up in this mess of suspended silt. We wanted a system where the thrusters were really high up off the seabed.” ¶ The idea of using “gull wings” was born. They tuck in for ascent and descent and deploy as needed to reveal
thrusters, cameras and lighting. ¶ The sub’s launch-and-recovery system is similar to those Triton has built for previous models used on superyachts and yacht-support vessels, and Ramsay says the gull-wing design likely has other applications. “We have started looking at whether it would be possible to order your sub with whatever body style you want and whatever depth that you want,” he says. “That’s the ideal situation.”
Light placement is key at dark depths. In the wrong spot, it has the same muddling eff ect of driving with high beams in fog.

Those are anchors and stingrays repeating in a pattern to create the overall look of this pet bed. The idea is to blend “coastal classic” and “modern sleek” elements.
Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea inspired Guy Harvey to start his career. This illustration is Harvey’s interpretation of the classic fight scene from the book.

REVIEWED > HATTERAS YACHTS GT65 CAROLINA
The Hatteras Yachts GT65 Carolina has some design changes from its GT siblings. The flybridge is pushed back a little, in a design nod to earlier Hatteras sport-fish yachts. There are newly designed side windows, and the engine-room side vents are longer. But the GT65 retains the series’ trademarks, such as generous bow flare, seakeeping ability and fish-raising muscle. ¶ The owner of our test boat, Rascal, is a seasoned yachtsman, angler and family man who considered all of these attributes in his purchase. He worked as a mate on fishing boats when he was younger and has always been around boats with his family. Having owned several Hatteras sport-fish yachts, he decided the GT65 Carolina was the next logical move. ¶ Rascal’s captain, Nick Millsap, has worked with the owner for five years and says the GT65 Carolina exceeded expectations. On the initial cruise to meet the owner, Millsap says, the GT65 had “a great dry ride, even into the head seas. It was rough, but the ride was awesome.” ¶ The GT65 has a 194-square-foot cockpit, and there is room to swivel the combination fighting
chair/rocket launcher in any direction on a frenetic marlin. Mezzanine seating to port has air conditioning to keep guests and line watchers cool. A stainless-steel freezer box is under the seat. Beneath the footrests are chilled boxes for refreshments. ¶ To starboard is a tackle center with a prep station and eight drawers. The drawers have stainless-steel bottoms with holes for drainage and ventilation. An electric grill can be installed on top of the unit. ¶ An in-deck ice maker produces not cubes but cylindrical ice, so it lasts longer and can touch more surfaces, keeping the catch fresher. The in-transom livewell can be fitted out with tuna tubes. Teak coaming boards add panache, while the lack of teak in the cockpit eases cleanup and maintenance. ¶ For all its angling focus in the cockpit, the GT65 has yacht-level elegance inside. High-gloss teak is used for the cabinets and furnishings. Complementing the wood are light
Hatteras upgraded the GT65’s hull design. With new tunnel pockets designed via computational-fluid-dynamics analysis, the shaft angles have decreased, offering improved efficiency and maneuverability. The builder’s integrated infusion process is where the stringer system is resin-infused into the solid-fiberglass hull bottom during layup, creating a single unit and, in turn, a stronger hull. Engine-mount stringers are steel-reinforced for strength and to distribute the torque load. Locating the Cat diesels and tanks lower in the hull lowers the center of gravity and improves the overall ride.

The standard galley layout is a peninsula form, creating a U-shaped countertop with room for one more bar stool. Either way, the galley has fridge and freezer drawers; a microwave; a four-burner electric cooktop; stowage for pots, pans and dishes; and pantries and cabinets with matching grain. An elevated U-shaped dinette to port has underseat stowage and a teak table. ¶ Belowdecks is a four-stateroom, three-head layout. All spaces have 6-foot-8-inch to 7-foot-1-inch headroom. The amidships en suite stateroom has a queen walk-around berth, nightstands, a full-size closet
and drawers. The forward VIP can have a queen-size centerline berth or a 60/40 split berth. The two remaining staterooms have upper and lower berths. ¶ Owners can convert one of the staterooms to a Hatteras Integrated Tackle Storage room, with gear cabinets and rig-prepping counter space. For the competing crew, the washer and dryer in the companionway should come in handy during tournament season. ¶ To minimize maintenance, most all of the high-gloss teak finishes on the exterior can be painted in a faux-teak finish. It looks as close to real as you’ll get, without the need for varnishing. ¶ Sporting a style that blends a little bit of yesterday with a lot of today, the Hatteras Yachts GT65 Carolina is built for running to blue water—and is designed to look good doing it. BY TH E N U M BERS Hatteras says that twin 1,800 hp Caterpillar C32A diesels give the GT65 a 35.5-knot cruise speed at 2,100 rpm and a top hop of 39.2 knots. Rascal’s owner wanted extended range in lieu of a high top speed, so he had the props tuned and added a 400-gallon tank to Rascal the existing 1,900-gallon fuel capacity. When I got on board, the GT65 was fully loaded but still achieved 33.3 knots on the pins while the diesels burned 196 gph. At an 1,800-rpm cruise, the GT65 made 25.8 knots while the engines consumed 136 gph for a 436-nm range.

ll admit to feeling a pang of jealousy when i see a yacht cruise past my neighborhood park in Bellingham, Washington. The bow is pointed toward the nearby majestic San Juan Islands, and its satellite-communications antennas punctuate the skyline. These yacht owners remain comfortably connected while being able to enjoy forays to explore Pacific Northwest beaches and parks, or hikes up Orcas Island’s Mount Constitution, rather than remaining tethered to their at-home internet connections. ¶ The trouble is, open-contract VSAT antennas historically haven’t come in small packages. Now, for smaller-yacht owners who have wanted that option, things have changed. ¶ Marine-based VSAT (very small aperture terminal) antennas evolved in the 1980s, giving mariners dependable satellite-communication connections that improved as airtime providers developed better satellite constellations with greater throughput speeds. ¶ But there was a catch: size. Until now, open-contract (think unlocked cellphones) VSAT systems for the recreational marine market typically employed antennas that were 60 centimeters or larger. Once inside its protective radome, even a “small” 60-centimeter antenna usually requires 60 feet of waterline to avoid overwhelming the yacht’s aesthetics. ¶ Unlike its bigger brothers, Intellian’s v45C ($18,000; the C stands for “compact”) has a 45-centimeter antenna that’s opening new cruising and work-aboard possibilities for owners of more modest-size rides who want their choice of airtime providers.

But if you’re outside of this [coverage], you’ll be on a slower beam.” ¶ In addition to popular cruising haunts such as the Caribbean, the Mediterranean and New England, cruisers will likely find good coverage on regularly plied shipping and commercial-airliner routes. But, as with any airtime contract, it’s important to compare your cruising itinerary with each service provider’s coverage map, data plan Intellian’s smallest VSAT antenna connecting the hardware. The Intrepid 430 Sport Yacht off ers 50 knots of speed. by patrick sciacca
he intrepid 430 sport yacht was penned to serve as both a stand-alone cruising craft and, with an added towing eye, as a superyacht tender. It also filled the builder’s series gap between the 390 and 475. ¶ The 430 has a stepped hull form, adding lift and reducing drag. ¶ Belowdecks, the 430 we got aboard had cherry joinery. There’s an owner’s berth aft and a platform berth forward. The vessel’s single head has a separate shower stall. ¶ At press time, there were five Intrepid 430 Sport Yachts on the market, ranging from $379,000 to $639,000.
F R OM T H E A R C H I V E “The 430 offers many of the design features that Intrepid has pioneered, as well as a few new tricks. The slick drop-down panel at the helm, the fuel-fill tap hidden discreetly beneath a door in the coaming, and the hullside water-access door were expected. The air-induction system that feeds the breeze to the helm area was something new, as was the electrically actuated seat/sun pad.” —Yachting, November 2008

Apply online at EssexCredit.com/yht
* Estimated APR (Annual Percentage Rate) based on 5 year loan term; individual rate may vary based on loan amount, loan term, vehicle use, model year and type of boat. Subject to consumer loan program requirements and credit approval. Rates and terms are subject to change based on market conditions and borrower eligibility. Certain fees, closing costs, and restrictions may apply. APR applied to the loan is the APR in effect on the date the application is received and is valid for 60 days. Boat must be 2001 model year or newer; for boat model year 2001 to 2010, add .25% to above rate. Maximum loan term based on loan amount. Maximum loan amount is calculated using an advance percentage determined by FICO score and multiplied by NADA guide base wholesale value with add-ons; if not listed in NADA guide, then multiplied by 80% of BUC low retail value. Other rates with different loan terms are available. Example of a refinance recreational use boat loan: A $65,399 loan (includes a $399 processing fee) for 5 years with a fixed interest rate of 4.047% would have an APR of 4.29% and 60 monthly payments of $1,205.81. This is only an example and the APR and processing fee may differ for your specific transaction. Loans with longer terms may have higher rates. Essex Credit is a division of Bank of the West. The craft’s inverted-V bow and pancake-style after sections were more than its wood build could tolerate, and it beat itself into extinction. Another Harvard graduate named Dick Fisher and a pal named Bob Pierce birthed Hunt’s improved effort in an autoclave. The result was an unsinkable, virtually indestructible 13-foot fiberglass, foam-filled Twinkie. ¶ Boston Whaler was born in 1958. For families with boating in their blood, the 13 was soon adopted as a babysitter for overactive adolescents. With just a trifle of horsepower, the 13 could plane slowly with one big kid or two small kids as crew. I believe that Hunt, who also invented the deep-V hull form, created the 13 as a challenge for
