ental health. Let’s talk about it. I haven’t met one person who hasn’t been affected by the global pandemic and it’s bound to have an affect on our mental wellbeing. Now, Oprah Winfrey and Prince Harry want to shine a light on the taboo topic in their new series The Me You Can’t See. Harry has led the charge by explaining it’s not a sign of weakness, but rather a sign of great strength to seek help when you need it. As he continues to receive backlash for speaking out against his family and the pressures of royal life, his mission to normalise conversations around mental health is one I applaud. To read about his crusade – and his latest bombshell interview – turn to page 10.
Sometimes we’re doing serious harm to our mental wellbeing without even knowing we are. Have you ever told yourself “you’re being too sensitive” or “overreacting” to a situation? Well, that’s self-gaslighting and it can be detrimental to your happiness. For all the facts and how to put a stop to such behaviour, turn to page 62. And finally, if you just need a laugh, watch Girls5eva (if you haven’ t already) – it’s the girl group we didn’t even know we needed and it’s sure to put a pep in your step! Read our interview with one of its stars, Busy Philipps, on page 34. Enjoy! Shari Nementzik, Editor

ISRAELIS AND PALESTINIANS GO HEAD TO HEAD IN A SEEMINGLY UNWINNABLE WAR
T
hough the conflict has gone on for decades, an escalation of fighting between Israelis and Palestinians in recent weeks has led the United Nations to warn of a “full-scale war”. Attacks began on May 10 when weeks of simmering tensions in Jerusalem between Palestinian militant group Hamas, protesters, the police and right-wing Israelis intensified, against the backdrop of a longstanding battle for a city sacred to Jews, Arabs and Christians. Civilians are paying an especially high price in the latest bout of violence in the Gaza Strip, with the death toll, at the time of print, already standing at 211. On the Palestinian side 201 deaths have been counted, according to Gaza’s
health authority, including 58 children and 34 women, and 10 deaths have been confirmed in Israel, including one child. The conflict is currently locked in an endless loop of bloodshed, producing confronting images that have reverberated around the globe. And while several countries have tried to broker a ceasefire, so far their pleas have fell on deaf ears. “This latest round of violence only perpetuates the cycles of death, destruction and despair, and pushes farther to the horizon any hopes of coexistence and peace,” United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said recently. “Fighting must stop. It must stop immediately.” • By Sara Tapia Who l 7

David Schwimmer
The divorced dad-of-one fled fame post-Friends. “It was pretty jarring, and it messed with my relationship to other people,” he said. He focused on voice overs and directing, making his Emmynominated TV comeback in The People vs OJ Simpson.
Courteney Cox
Cox – who is mum to daughter Coco, 16, with ex-husband David Arquette – parlayed her Friends fame into sitcom success as the star of Cougar Town. Early next year she’s reprising her Scream role in the movie franchise’s fifth instalment.
Jennifer Aniston
The actress almost didn’t come back for the show’s final season. “I had a few issues I was dealing with,” she revealed. Since then, the star’s big and small screen career has taken off. “I would be nothing without it,” she said of the series.
Matthew Perry
Perry, who recently called off his engagement, uses his sober-living commitment to help others struggling with addiction. “When I die, I’d like Friends to be listed behind helping people,” he said in 2015, while accepting an honour for his charity work.
Matt LeBlanc
After starring in the panned Friends spin-off, Joey, LeBlanc kept a low profile before following up with small film parts in movies like Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle and more TV work on Episodes, UK’s Top Gear and the sitcom Man with a Plan.
Lisa Kudrow
In 2017, the married mum-of-one alluded to a toxic encounter with an A-list guest star. “I rehearsed without makeup … And then, on show night, I’m in hair and makeup, and I was told, ‘Now you’re f--kable!’” the Comeback star revealed.

nnouncing the May 27 air date for the hyper-anticipated Friends: The Reunion special, Courteney Cox was amped. “I feel so blessed to have had a chance to reunite with my Friends,” she posted. “And it was better than ever.” That’s saying a lot. The unscripted reunion special will publicly reunite Cox with co-stars Jennifer Aniston, Matthew Perry, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer on the same sound stage for the first time since the show’s 2004 finale. It will also feature catch ups with Tom Selleck, who played Monica’s older lover Richard, and Chandler’s nasally flame Janice, played by Maggie Wheeler. Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Mindy Kaling, Reese Witherspoon, Cindy Crawford and many other stars will also appear. “There is something great about having a show based in love, which is the root of what the show is about,” Aniston has told WHO of the sitcom’s enduring popularity. “It’s a group of characters who really loved one another.” That on-screen loyalty spilled over into reality, with the tight-knit crew standing by each other during the New York-set show’s decade-long run and beyond. While today the nostalgic actors dwell on their happiest memories, over the years they’ve also pulled back the curtains on their backstage struggles. In 2019, Kudrow lamented about body image issues she experienced when she constantly compared herself to her shrinking co-stars. “I’m already bigger than Courteney and Jennifer,” she told Marc Maron’s WTF podcast. “Taller, bigger. My bones feel bigger! I just felt like this mountain of a woman next to them.” LeBlanc’s low point came once the series wrapped. “For years and years, I barely left the house. I was burnt out,” he told The Mirror in 2016. “It was a very dark time. I almost had a nervous breakdown.” Perry hit his rock bottom at the peak of his success, battling alcoholism and an addiction to prescription medication, including two stints in rehab in 1997 and 2001. “I don’t remember three years of it,” Perry admitted in a BBC interview of his time on the show. Luckily, he has five friends to fill him in. “Someone remembers it one way and someone remembers something else about it altogether. It’s great,” Kudrow told Entertainment Weekly of the special. “We’re all incredibly grateful, and we all knew it … that that was such a unique situation. We all loved – and love – each other.” • By Jennie Noonan

T
he Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, where the couple accused the royals of racism, shocked the world. Just two months later, Prince Harry has publicly slammed his family again, and this time not even the Queen could escape the firing line. While appearing on the Armchair Expert podcast on May 13, the 36-year-old revealed he felt that he’d never really “fit in” with the Windsor clan. Harry further explained he’d been forced to step down from his royal role in January 2020 to protect his children, son Archie, 2, and a daughter he and wife Meghan Markle are expecting over the US summer, to “break the cycle” of “genetic pain” passed down from his grandparents and father. “I never saw it, I never knew about it, and then suddenly I started to piece it together

Harry further revealed that he’d been looking for a way out of his full-time royal role for a long time. “I was in my early 20s and I was thinking I don’t want this job, I don’t want to be here,” he confessed. However, it wasn’t until he was encouraged
by his wife Meghan, 39, that his eyes were truly opened to what life could be like outside of the royal family. “My wife had the most amazing explanation. [She said,] ‘You don’t need to be a princess, you can create the life that will be better than any princess,”’ Harry explained. “And that’s coming from her own lived experience.” Harry also compared his old life – and the public scrutiny that came with it – to “living in a zoo” or being on “The Truman Show”. The hit 1998 film starred Jim Carrey as Truman Burbank, whose entire existence was televised through hidden cameras for a TV show and everyone in his life were hired actors. Amidst the growing backlash, more shocking tweets from the mum-of-two have come to light. In 2013, Teigen took aim at Teen Mom star Farrah Abraham, calling her a “w--re” and tweeting “everyone hates you” to the then21-year-old. Teigen also insinuated in a 2011 tweet that Lindsay Lohan used to self-harm, with the actress’ mum Dina, 58, recently sharing that she hopes the star can grow from the scandal. “I will not judge her words towards others but I stand firm in one looking into oneself and continue to learn,” she said. Meanwhile, controversial commentator Candace Owens didn’t hold back. “The media has given Chrissy a pass for YEARS as she has monstrously attacked people, repeatedly for simply existing.”

THE STAR APOLOGISES AMIDST A SHOCKING BULLYING SCANDAL
he’d only recently returned to Twitter after taking a break due to “negativity” and “cruel messages” on the platform, but Chrissy Teigen has quickly been embroiled in a bullying scandal of her own. The 35-year-old came under fire recently after abusive tweets from Teigen resurfaced online – with reality star Courtney Stodden accusing her of online harassment and “extreme” bullying. In 2011, Teigen published a barrage of tweets telling a then-16-year-old Stodden to “go to sleep forever” after the teen hit headlines for tying the knot – TEIGEN with actor Doug Hutchinson, who’s 35 years her senior – with the now non-binary star recently admitting this was only part of the picture. “She wouldn’t just publicly tweet about wanting me to take ‘a dirt nap’ but would privately [direct message] me and tell me to kill myself,” Stodden revealed during an interview with The Daily Beast. “Things like, ‘I can’t wait for you to die.’” Teigen was quick to apologise for her actions, admitting she was “an insecure, attention-seeking troll” when she was younger. “Not a lot of people are lucky enough to be held accountable for all their

The former model went on to admit she was “ashamed and completely embarrassed” by her behaviour – acknowledging that she has lost the trust of her fans. “I have worked so hard to give you guys joy and be beloved and the feeling of letting you down is nearly unbearable, truly,” she shared. While Teigen said she had “tried to connect with Courtney privately” to apologise, Stodden has since refuted this claim. “I accept her apology and forgive her,” the reality star said. “But the truth remains the same, I have never heard from her or her camp in private. In fact, she blocked me on Twitter.” Stodden also said that while they want to believe Teigen’s apology is sincere, the reality star confessed it appears to be a tactic to save face with fans and brands alike. “It feels like a public attempt to save her partnerships with Target and other brands who are realising her ‘wokeness’ is

ink, like every mum, had to pivot when the coronavirus pandemic brought the world to a record-scratching stop. “For us it was like, the kids are going to be home all the time, we can’t go anywhere, and we have to try not to get sick – but then we did,” says the pop star, who, along with her son Jameson, 4, battled COVID-19 last (US) spring. For 12 weeks “we were really, really sick, and it was dicey,” adds Pink, 41, who was so concerned about her condition that she rewrote her will while battling the virus. “It was really scary.” Once she recovered, the pop star – known for her empowering anthems and high-flying performances – tackled a new role: teacher. “I started making all these colour-coded charts. From 9am to 10am we’re doing art. Then 10.30 to 11.30 was PE, and we’re going to run around outside,” recalls Pink, who also shares daughter Willow, 9, with her husband, pro motocross racer Carey Hart, 45. “It was like, OK, we just have to figure it out.”

Pink has learned to go with the flow over the years. Born Alecia Moore and raised in suburban Pennsylvania, Pink was a rebellious teen. She clashed with her parents, got kicked out of the house and was homeless before scoring her first record deal. Since her debut album, Can’t Take Me Home, launched her to fame in 2000, Pink has won three Grammys and become one of the most successful acts in pop music. Now she’s offering a rare backstage glimpse at how she navigates her life as a rock star mum in her new Amazon Prime Video documentary P!nk: All I Know So Far (streaming May 21), which was filmed pre-pandemic as she toured the world in 2019 with her family in tow. Over a Zoom call to WHO’s sister publication People from her home in California, the singer opened up about raising children on the road, why her marriage is stronger than ever – and the lesson she learned in quarantine: “Life sort of just distils itself down into what joy you can squeeze into your days.”

I’m always trying to figure out: “Am I doing the right thing? Can a woman have it all? What does that even mean?” And the answer is no, most of the time you can’t, and it feels like you’re climbing Mount Everest. But it’s also so magical what I get to do and who I get to be in this life. What’s the most difficult part of managing it all? Touring with kids is impossible – and I did the impossible. For a while there were a lot of other pop stars that were emailing me and calling me for the playbook on how to tour with kids, so I wrote a playbook for other mums. You just keep going. I’m just thinking about: “Am I raising a kind person? What’s it like to be my kid?” Your kids definitely have a different childhood than you did. Do they know what you do isn’t normal? What’s normal now? We used to go to offices, and now we can stay in our underwear. But they think I’m pretty normal in a weird way! They don’t know anything else. furthest I went was the Atlantic City shore to see my grandparents. Their normal is different: we go on tour and have a ball pit in Mummy’s dressing room. But they are normal kids. Jameson wants to be an astronaut. Willow does gymnastics and reads Harry Potter and is convinced she’s going to Hogwarts when she’s 11, and I don’t have the heart to tell her that she’s not. They’re totally weird and joyful, and I’m loving every moment of it. Did you ever consider leaving the kids at home while you were on the road? No. The first half of my life my priority was to get the hell out, like, “I want to be a rock star. I want to join the circus and run away.” Once I became a mum, I wanted to create a life outside of this for myself and my family, because all this stuff can go away, and what do you have at the end of it? You have the people that are important to you, your health, and a safe place to be. Who l 19
COURTESY OF PINK; ANDREW MACPHERSON
“He has been my muse,” Pink says of husband Hart (on the set of the video for her new single ‘All I Know So Far,’ which shares the title of her documentary).
What is your greatest joy as a mum? For someone with as much masculine energy as I have, the fact that I had a little girl – I didn’t think I could make a girl. It was so healing for me to see how we start out on this earth. She’s just so magical and has been my greatest teacher. And then Jameson comes in, and he’s like this mini Chris Farley. I don’t know what to do with him at this point. I’m putting away money for his bail. Even the hard days are a blessing. In the film you say you were hesitant to have kids because of your relationship with your own mother. How did you mend that? She kicked me out when I was 15. It took me about six years to come back to her. I needed her when I was 21. She was there for me, and we’ve been best friends ever since. We were together last week, talking about regrets that we had. She comes from a generation that’s not very good at apologising. I’ll never forget, but I’m here to forgive. I will apologise to anybody for anything, because I believe in the power of apology. You also talk about how Carey has no ego when it comes to taking care of the kids when you’re in rock star mode. What kind of father and husband is he? Carey was raised by a single dad, so he knows how to do it all. Sometimes I feel like he wishes he was a single dad. [Laughs.] He comes from such a dysfunctional family, and we’re his people, so he feels safe now.
PINK’S SOARING SUCCESS
He’s always home for dinner. If I’m tired or don’t feel well, he’ll cook. He does all the dishes. We don’t believe in roles. Coming from that sort of moto world, which can be construed as hypermasculine, he’s not. He’s super-hot, but he’s also super-sensitive. How has your relationship changed over the years? Carey was this crazy single moto guy, and I was this up-and-coming psycho pop star. We’ve really grown up together, and now we’re these super-responsible parents who have a farm. I have a vineyard and make wine, and he builds motorcycles instead of crashing them. When you first get together, you look at that person as your entire world. One person can’t be your entire world. You have to have your own passions, your own friends, your own time to yourself. I used to be super-needy. Now we expect less of each other, and that allows us to give each other more somehow. You two separated for nearly a year in 2008. How have you worked on your marriage over the years? I’m a huge proponent of counselling. We both have therapy, individually, and we do couples counselling. Long-term relationships are not easy. It’s much easier to stay in the solid days and jump from relationship to relationship, because then you don’t have to fix the problems that keep recurring. You have to end up fixing yourself; you can’t fix the other person.

On top of the world
“My mum is like, ‘Can you just stay on the ground?’ Why would I?” Pink (in 2019) says of her acrobatics on tour.
So it can be challenging, and there’s good days and there’s bad days. I think it’s an impossible expectation for you to think that you’re going to evolve at exactly the same pace as another person in exactly the same direction. So it takes work to redefine what’s important. I don’t want to break up my family. That’s been my main goal, since I had a broken family. So sometimes you have to let it go. You can’t die on every mountain. Early on in your career you were pitted against other female artists like Christina Aguilera and marketed as an “anti-Britney Spears” figure. How did that affect you? It was so unfair to all the girls. None of us wanted that. I love Britney – she used to carry around my album. I was like, “Dude, I’m a street punk, I just skateboard. That doesn’t have to be the anti-Britney. I don’t want to fight anybody.” One of the best things that [music executive] LA Reid ever told me was that this music business is big enough for everybody to win at the same time. There’s no such thing as competition. I think we navigated through it as good as a 20-year-old girl can. Now I think it’s totally different. Girls supporting girls is rad. You’ve accomplished so much. What are your hopes for the future? My goals are to not completely screw up my kids, to keep making music that is honest and to be there for my parents as they age. I’ve already perfected sourdough and can knit a baby blanket. What else is there?

THE STAR CANCELS HER TALK SHOW AFTER THE TOXIC WORKPLACE
er funny persona and “Be kind” philosophy has attracted hundreds of A-list celebrities to join her on stage. But after a scandalfilled year, where she faced allegations of being out of touch and overseeing a toxic workplace culture, Ellen DeGeneres has decided to pull the plug on her oncepopular daytime talk show. The comedian, 63, announced on May 12 the 19th season of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which will run into early 2022, will be its last. Despite the problems that have plagued the star for the past 14 months, DeGeneres insisted they weren’t the reason she was stepping down. “When you’re a creative person, you constantly need to be challenged — and as great as this show is, and as fun as it is, it’s just not a challenge anymore,” DeGeneres told The Hollywood Reporter. The problems started for the former actress in March 2020, after a Twitter thread asking people to post “insane” stories about DeGeneres being “notoriously one of the meanest people live” went viral
and received over 2000 replies. A month later she faced further backlash when she compared the filming of her show from her lavish $34 million Montecito estate during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown to “being in jail”. The final nail in the coffin proved to be a BuzzFeed News report in July, based on dozens of interviews with ex-staffers, which prompted an internal investigation into the program. Three of the show’s producers were forced to step down amid allegations of bullying, sexual misconduct and racially insensitive remarks in the workplace. While DeGeneres was not accused of wrongdoing herself, – SOURCE she was blamed for allowing the issues to develop. Initially, the star made a tearful apology to everyone, where she accepted responsibility for overseeing the toxic culture. “I learned that things happened here that never should have happened. I take that very seriously and I want to say I am so sorry to the people who were affected,” she tearfully said during the Season 18 premiere last October. “I know that I’m in a position of privilege and power and I realise that with that comes
responsibility, and I take responsibility for what happens at my show.” But following news of her resignation, DeGeneres changed her tune, saying she felt attacked for being a woman. “I thought something was going on, because it was too orchestrated, it was too coordinated.” And you know, people get picked on, but four months straight for me?” she told journalist Savannah Guthrie. “I have to say if nobody else is saying it, it was really interesting, because I’m a woman, and it did feel very misogynistic,” she added. DeGeneres also admitted she felt it was impossible for her to see the issues among her staff. “Unless I literally stayed here until the last person goes home at night, and checked in with 255 people,” she explained. While the star is adamant she had always planned to finish her program after the 19th season and that it had nothing to do with her string of controversies, the show has seen a substantial drop in viewership since the scandal. While each episode of the talk show previously averaged a US audience of 2.6 million viewers, this has fallen to a low of 1.5 million since her tearful apology.

In a cringe-worthy chat with Dakota Johnson in 2019, DeGeneres slammed the actress for not inviting her to her birthday. It later emerged she’d skipped the party for a football game.
In her memoir Open Book, Jessica Simpson admitted she was drunk when she appeared on the show in 2017. “It was a weak moment for me and I wasn’t in the right place,” she said.

“The viewers have spoken. Her ratings have been in the toilet for a long, long time now, her show hasn’t been fun, it has not been interesting,” the program’s former producer Hedda Muskat told Australian breakfast program Sunrise on May 13. “And she is not really – by the way – stepping down, the viewers fired her,” she added. WHAT’S NEXT?
After a much-needed break with wife Portia de Rossi, 48, DeGeneres plans to get back into “more creative” work. “I don’t look at this as the end at all. It’s the start of a new chapter, and hopefully, my fans will go with me wherever I go,” she said.

peaking to The New Yorker in 2018, iconic actor Robert De Niro was asked about his recent work pattern of taking on multiple movies every year. “I like to keep busy,” he answered. “I’m always doing something … What else am I gonna do?” Ahead of his 78th birthday in August, many critics and fans have wondered why he still seems to opt for quantity over quality. With a few exceptions, many of his roles – such as those in Dirty Grandpa, Grudge Match and Last Vegas – lean embarrassingly into cranky old man territory and certainly don’t live up to his revered status as the multiOscar-winning actor from Raging Bull, Taxi Driver and The Godfather Part II.

THE REAL REASON THE ONCEREVERED ACTOR IS FALLING FLAT
Celebrity With an estimated net worth of $641 million, why trade his professional legacy for a regular pay day? A report in the New York Post shed light on the situation, indicating that De Niro’s complicated personal life has precipitated his professional nosedive. During a virtual divorce hearing on April 16, De Niro’s lawyer Caroline Krauss told a Manhattan judge that keeping up with his ex-wife Grace Hightower’s lavish tastes leaves the legendary star little room for career discernment. “Mr De Niro is 77 years old, and while he loves his craft, he should not be forced to work at this prodigious pace because – JUDGE he has to,” she said. “When does that stop? When does he get the opportunity to not take every project that comes along and not work six-day weeks, 12-hour days, so he can keep pace with Ms Hightower’s thirst for Stella McCartney?” But let’s rewind, because the drama started decades earlier: De Niro and Hightower, 66, met at a London nightclub in 1987, but they didn’t wed for another 10 years until after De Niro divorced his first wife, Diahnne Abbott, in 1988 (they share daughter Drena, 49, and son Raphael, 44). He went on to date model and restaurateur Toukie Smith and have twin sons Aaron and Julian, now 25, with her. After they split, he got serious with Hightower, and the two married in 1997 and welcomed son Elliot together before splitting in 1999. They then got back together, renewed their vows in 2004 and welcomed daughter Helen in 2011 via surrogate. De Niro ultimately filed for divorce in 2018. Since then, things have only gotten stickier. According to their 2004 pre-nuptial agreement, Hightower, a socialite and occasional actress, gets $1.29 million annually as long as De Niro is making at least $19 million. Until the divorce is finalised and the pre-nup agreement comes into effect, De Niro – who aside from acting has heavy investments in real estate and the restaurant business – is supposed to give Hightower enough to “maintain the status quo” lifestyle she had when they were married. In the hearing, De Niro’s lawyer described that lifestyle as “rich with indulgence and waste and greed”, claiming Hightower burned through $2.77 million in 2019, including splurging $1.9 million on a diamond. Hightower’s lawyer Kevin McDonough denied the diamond claim and countered that De Niro has unjustly cut the amount of money he has been sending his ex, including dropping her credit card expenses from $591,000 a month to “just” $163,000 from January. “There have
been no cutbacks and no slowdowns in Mr De Niro’s lifestyle whatsoever,” he claimed. “When Mr De Niro goes to brunch on Sundays in Connecticut, he charters a helicopter up there. When he flies down to see his friends in Florida or wherever else, it’s a private jet.” De Niro’s lawyer denied that claim, saying the actor is also currently millions of dollars behind on his taxes, and the money from his next two film projects will go towards paying off that debt. During the hearing, Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Matthew Cooper offered a reality check: “There is nothing ordinary about these expenses. For 99.9999 per cent of the world, these are extraordinary to an almost unimaginable degree.” He added, “I want to get these parties divorced … They will still come out of this richer than almost any human who walks this earth.” As the divorce battle continues, De Niro’s next project, which started filming in Oklahoma on April 19, will likely be positive both for his bank balance and his legacy. According to Deadline, he’ll pocket $19 million as he teams up with Martin Scorsese for the 10th time in Apple TV Plus film Killers of the Flower Moon. “I don’t know where we’re gonna be in 10 years, in 15 years,” De Niro mused in an Indiewire magazine interview about whether this will be their final collaboration. “But with Marty, I will always say yes.” Smart move! • By Jennie Noonan

CAREER NOSEDIVE
The actor won an Academy Award for his portrayal of boxer Jake LaMotta in 1980’s Raging Bull. De Niro said his role in 1974’s The Godfather Part II “changed his life”.
The actor was nominated for a series of awards for his role in Taxi Driver in 1976.
De Niro’s transition to comedy got off to a good start with Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers.
He teamed up with Zac Efron in 2016’s Dirty Grandpa. De Niro’s 1995 flick Casino was a worldwide box office success, with striking similarities to the equally successful Goodfellas five years earlier.
One critic said The War with Grandpa would leave “a lot of questions about what this talented cast was thinking”.

Girls5eva is about a ’90s girl group getting back together years after they split up. Is the group based on any real girl groups from that era? Not specifically. There are a lot of manufactured girl groups from the 90s who maybe came from talent shows, had a hit, did one album and then split up because it just didn’t – PHILIPPS work out the way it was maybe supposed to. This show is about a group of girls like that, who have gone onto do very different things but then find themselves suddenly back together in a way that has happened to groups from that time in the real world.
What can you tell us about your character, Summer? Summer married a boy band member in the ’90s and they had a kid, but it didn’t work out. She’s tried out for TV reality shows and does social media stuff but she’s still holding onto the past and the success she and the Girls5eva briefly had. So, when a chance comes up to get the girls back together, she jumps at it – despite the fact they’re now in their 40s. What was it that made you want to be a part of the show? First of all, my dream job has always been to be in a ’90s girl group. Secondly, it was a chance to work with [producer] Tina Fey again and [show creator] Meredith Scardino, who I worked with a little on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (enough to know how hilarious she is!). Sara Bareilles and Renée Ellise Goldsberry were already cast, so when I heard that, and the pitch for the show from Tina, I was totally in. Is it true that one of Tina’s daughters plays your character’s little girl? She does. Penelope plays my daughter Stevie and she’s amazing. She was never actually going to be Stevie, but the actor who was supposed to play her couldn’t for some reason. Because of the COVID-19 situation, I felt more comfortable working with Tina’s kid because it

Let’s hear it for the girls
While most girl groups are plagued by rumours of infighting, there was certainly no drama between Philipps and her Girls5eva co-stars. “It’s actually crazy how much we love each other,” she gushes. “The girls and all the cast and crew are amazing. Some of us have worked together before, which really helped given the circumstances, but we really didn’t have any dramas.”
RENÉE ELISE GOLDSBERRY
Most famous for originating the role of Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton, the Tony Awardwinning actress plays the designated diva who left the group to strike out on her own, only to realise her five minutes of fame were already up.
’90s costumes and the present day stuff is just amazing. It’s some of the best costume design I’ve ever seen on a show. You became famous yourself in the ’90s for playing a character who dreams of making it as a singer on teen drama Dawson’s Creek. Where do you think Audrey is now? I really think she made it. I think Audrey moved to Nashville, Tennessee, married some rich guy and is now back in Beverly Hills living her best life with her kids – that’s what I hope for her anyway.

PAULA PELL
A former long-time Saturday Night Live writer, Pell lends her comedic chops to the cast of Girls5eva in the form of divorced dentist Gloria – the Sporty Spiceesque member of the group who was trying to keep her homosexuality under wraps.
Do you still talk to the Dawson’s cast? Sure. We talk and I think everyone knows that Michelle [Williams] and I are very close. It’s funny because she’s always been in New York while I’ve been in Los Angeles. Now I’ve moved to New York and we still can’t really hang out because of the coronavirus pandemic, so it’s been phone calls and maybe a couple of chats in the park at a distance. Finally, would you like to see a Girls5eva album released, given how popular the show and the songs have already become? Oh, that’s happening [laughs]. I’m serious, Girls5eva are dropping an album. We recorded different versions of the songs for the show and they’re going to release the full tracks as an album. It’s crazy!
Philipps’ character, Hope Bobeck, was an intern on the medical drama.

lessened the chances of exposure as she was already part of the family. How else did the global pandemic impact shooting the show? I can safely say that, having been doing what I do for many years now, this is the hardest job I’ve ever had because of all the protocols we had to have in place – we had so many restrictions. We couldn’t even rehearse properly. We had to do it on Zoom while wearing masks, which was difficult, and we had to shoot everything really fast. I’m used to maybe two weekends of rehearsals for something like the big singing and dancing scenes we did for this, but we couldn’t do that within our COVID-safe bubble. Try dancing with a mask on, it’s hard! But we did it and nobody got sick, which is the most important thing. Were there any positives that came with so many restrictions? Not many, other than sometimes zipping up your dress for a Zoom call – it’s just too much effort normally, but when it’s virtual you can get away with it [laughs]. How did you cope with having to sing and dance as a group? Sara is a Grammy-winning singer and musician and Renée was in Hamilton on Broadway so that really helped a lot. That just left Paula [Pell] and I to do our best and hang in there with our karaoke voices [laughs]. As for the dancing, it was hard just to remember the choreography but everyone was really supportive. I got to help out the girls who hadn’t done much TV comedy before and they got to help me find a note and – PHILIPPS not fall over. What about the clothes you get to wear on the show, especially in those flashback scenes of the girls in their heyday, did you like the costumes? I totally love what we got to wear on the show – the wardrobe is just insane. The

SUSAN SARANDON
Her role as a waitress with a secret past scored the star her second best actress Oscar nomination. She would go on to win for 1995’s Dead Man Walking and has worked consistently ever since. The mother-of-three split with longterm partner Tim Robbins in 2009 and broke up with Jonathan Bricklin (30 years her junior) in 2015. “I don’t care if it’s a man or a woman,” Sarandon, 74, said in March of what she looks for in a partner. “I’m open to all age, all colour. What I’m interested in is someone who wants to be adventuresome.”
HARVEY KEITEL
Keitel was a director’s darling before and after his role as compassionate Arkansas detective Hal Slocumb. The 81-year-old first became known for Martin Scorsese movies Mean Streets and Taxi Driver, and would work with him again in 2019’s The Irishman. He’s also a Tarantino mainstay (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction) and has appeared in three Wes Anderson movies.
BRAD PITT
With less than 15 minutes of screen time, Pitt’s ab-flashing turn as smooth-talking thief J.D. launched his career into the stratosphere. He was soon cast in several blockbusters and showed off his acting chops in independent films, eventually winning an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. “I’m really grateful to Ridley Scott and Geena, who gave me that shot because that was the big league,” says the 57-year-old film producer and divorced father-of-six of Thelma & Louise. “They took a chance on me.”
CHRISTOPHER MCDONALD
Davis, 65, had already won an Oscar (for 1988’s The Accidental Tourist) and was nominated again for her role as a downtrodden housewife. The response to the part changed her career choices. “I would think: ‘What are the women in the audience going to say when they see this movie?’” she has said. In 2004, she started the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, focused on improving female representation and, in 2019, won an honourary Oscar for her efforts. At 46, she welcomed a daughter and had twins at 48. She divorced for a fourth time in 2017.
MICHAEL MADSEN
Recommended for the role by ex-girlfriend Davis, McDonald, 66, spun his turn as a buffoonish controlling husband into more than 100 roles on the screen. he love triangle between Liza (Sutton Foster), Josh (Nico Tortorella) and Charles (Peter Hermann) on Younger has kept us glued to our screens since 2015. But as the hit comedy-drama series draws to a close during its seventh and final season, Molly Bernard, who plays sassy publicist and social media guru Lauren Heller, reveals who she is rooting for in the finale. “I’m definitely on Team Liza,” the 33-year-old actress tells WHO with a laugh over Zoom from her home in New York City. “I can never make up my mind. If there is a good juicy storyline going on with Josh, then I think he’s The One. But I’m on Team Charles when there is a great scene with him. I’m just leaving it up to Liza to pick who she’s happiest with,” she explains.
Are fans going to be happy with how the show ends? I think fans will lose their mind over the ending. I wish we could all sit down and watch it together, so we can gab about it afterward. It’s a really elegant finale that is equal parts heartbreaking and heartwarming. What have you enjoyed about playing Lauren over the years? What I love most about Lauren is how unapologetic she is. She loves herself boldly and I think we all need to see that sometimes. I’m also very proud to have played one of the first pansexual characters on TV. The way our program has represented that sector of people is very important. Lauren and Maggie [Debi Mazar] are queer but that doesn’t define everything about their character. Kelsey and Lauren are best friends on screen, while the actress who plays her, Hilary Duff, is your real-life bestie. Did you meet because of Younger? Yes, I didn’t know her before. We had a real opposites attract meet cute on the first day. Hilary is just amazing and I was – BERNARD a nervous Nelly, who was fresh out of my acting program at Yale University. I was trying so hard to get the scene right and Hilary said, “Just take a deep breath and don’t stress cause you’re doing great.” She is a real mama bear who took me under her wing. We just became fierce friends and I know she’ll be in my life forever. There have been rumours of a spin-off series centred around Hilary’s character. Do you know anything about that and could Lauren be making an appearance? I wish I knew! We’ve had a really hard time saying goodbye to our characters so we’ll just have to see, but I think anything could happen. I’d love the chance to play Lauren again if the opportunity arises.
“We had to get very creative,” Bernard explains of hiding Duff’s pregnancy on screen.
Bernard officiated at Duff’s 2019 wedding and is a godparent to one of her kids.
The final season was filmed in New York City at the height of the coronavirus pandemic. Was it scary returning to work? Certainly. It’s still scary. I’ve just had my first vaccine but haven’t changed my behaviour – I still wear a mask everywhere. It was such a long wait for the final season – 19 months! – but we felt we owed it to the fans and ourselves to finish the story properly. Hilary was expecting her daughter Mae while the final season was being filmed, but you can’t tell. How did you hide her pregnancy? She does look amazing! I was telling her the other day there is no way you can tell she’s pregnant until the very end. We had a lot of fun hiding her belly. We used everything from a giant clutch, to a computer and a big bowl of popcorn. What’s coming up next for you? I’m really excited to be starring in my first movie – it’s a real pinch-me moment. The character I play in the film Milkwater is very different from Lauren. It’ a coming-of-age story about how difficult it is for queer couples to start families. It’s due out in summer [in the US], so hopefully you’ll get to see it in Australia soon, too! • By Kylie Walters (Younger is streaming now on Stan)

FRED & ROSEMARY WEST’S HOUSE OF HORRORS
A GRIM SEARCH FOR ANSWERS I
t was called a secretive project, but for those living in the area it was clear what the ITV documentary crew were doing at The Clean Plate cafe in Gloucester, England. The eatery was where 15-year-old part-time waitress Mary Bastholm had worked before disappearing on January 6, 1968. According to reports, the film crew, headed by revered English newsreader Sir Trevor McDonald, were filming an investigative documentary on her suspected murder – and on May 7, they found something. Using a dog trained to sniff out bodies and ground-penetrating radar, the crew spotted something that suggested “a body
44 l Who
could be buried within the property”, read a statement from Gloucester Police, who swooped on the site after the crew alerted them. Added chief constable Craig Holden, “This could be a significant development on a case which has gained a lot of public interest over the years.” That widespread interest stems from Bastholm’s link to one of England’s most notorious serial killers, whose shocking crimes spanned two decades from 1967. Fred West, who with wife Rosemary murdered multiple young women in what became known as the “House of Horrors” murders, was a regular visitor to the cafe where Mary worked. The Wests’ victims,
who the couple either knew or abducted, were raped, tortured and mutilated before their deaths. Though it has long been speculated that Fred was behind Bastholm’s disappearance, no evidence has ever been found. That may be about to change. “We plan to continue forensic assessments at the location,” said police in a statement. If Bastholm’s remains were uncovered, it would finally provide answers to her surviving family, including relatives in Australia. On the night she vanished, Bastholm had worked at the cafe, which was then called the Pop-In, and arrived at her home nearby at 6.30pm. Just after 7pm, she left to catch a bus to her boyfriend’s home.
Crime Mary Bastholm was just 15 when she disappeared in 1968.
Nine bodies were found by police at the House of Horrors where the Wests lived. The property has since been demolished.
KILLER COUPLE
DOES AN ENGLISH CAFE HOLD CLUES TO A SERIAL KILLER’S GRUESOME MURDER? “And that was the last we saw of her,” her mother Doreen told British current affairs show ATV Today at the time. Back then, it was thought she may have run away, but that idea was dismissed by her loving parents, who have both since passed away. “I think she took a lift from someone she knew,” said her father Christian. “Perhaps someone who came into the cafe.” Fifty-three years later, it’s a theory that still holds weight. At that time, the Wests’ sadistic killing spree had not yet begun, but in 1967, Fred, a violent and sexually disturbed man, killed his 18-year-old girlfriend Anne McFall, who was pregnant with his child. He buried her in a field, and
she was reported as a missing person. The next year, Bastholm disappeared. According to local man Chris Roberts, who knew Bastholm, Fred was a “regular customer” of the Pop-In and knew Bastholm. Roberts said the teen had been seen in Fred’s car on more than one occasion. Further, Fred, a builder, had completed some works at the cafe around the time, including laying a concrete floor. Though there were reports Fred had confessed to killing Bastholm while in prison, police say he didn’t make any admission to them before his suicide in 1995, while awaiting trial. “I would like to find out what happened,” Bastholm’s late brother Peter said in 2014. “Our parents died without knowing what happened to her.” The one person who might know is Rosemary, according to Rosemary’s former lawyer, Leo Goatley, who wrote the 2020 book Understanding Fred and Rose West: Noose, Lamella and the Gilded Cage. Goatley suspects Bastholm’s murder may have been the couple’s first joint killing, when Rosemary – who maintains her innocence and is serving a life prison term – was 14. Though the couple told police they met in 1969, Goatley believes they knew each other earlier.
And he points out the couple were prone to abduct their victims from bus stops. “If indeed there are remains at the [cafe], it is a very clear and definite link to Fred and possibly Rose West,” the lawyer told Gloucestershire Live. “And it is my theory that Fred and Rose were involved in the disappearance and that Mary Bastholm was Rose West’s first victim.” At press time, police said the search at the cafe could continue for weeks, telling the BBC that the work, which involves geophysical survey equipment, will include examining the cafe’s basement and dismantling a fireplace. “We’ve been waiting a long time to find out what happened to Mary,” Peter’s widow Denise told the UK’s MailOnline. “Hopefully this latest development will provide some closure at last.” • By Michael Crooks
Fred and Rosemary met when he was 28 and she was 15. They married in 1972 and had three children together.

Fred and Rosemary West have been linked to at least 12 murders. The remains of most of their victims were found buried in the backyard or cellar of their property at 25 Cromwell Street in Gloucester, a six-minute walk from the cafe.

IN THE KNOW Your guide to what’s turning heads in fashion this week
5 MINUTES WITH: BREE McCANN The Australian model talks exclusively to WHO about lingerie, confidence and coffee …
You’re the face of Intimo lingerie’s latest campaign again. Why do you love the brand so much? Intimo first booked me for their campaign seven years ago and, back then, very few brands were willing to step outside the box and embrace diversity. At a time when size 14 models were rarely booked for lingerie campaigns in Australia, I’m so grateful that Intimo really embraced my body and who I was. I think diversity is the future of the fashion industry and it’s empowering to see brands such as Intimo leading the way with campaigns like this.
What is your favourite piece from the collection?
I think black lace will always be my number one but I’m also very excited about the new tonal colours.
What do you do to feel confident every day?
I heard someone say recently that confidence is your greatest currency, and I’ve been trying to keep that in mind whenever I have those moments of doubt. I feel most confident when I’m eating well and looking after myself, but ultimately I think it’s a choice to be happy, positive and confident. I think it’s about persistence.
When do you feel the sexiest? In Intimo lingerie, of course!
What does body positivity mean to you?
I think body positivity is about shifting the narrative and changing the way we think about our bodies and self-worth. For so long, we have been trained to believe that there is only one way to be beautiful and that’s just so outdated. With more relatable images and diversity in the media now, I really hope the next generation of women will grow up with a much better body image and sense of worth than we did.

SELF-GASLIGHTING? No, you aren’t being too sensitive but you need to know the facts …
W
hen was the last time you told yourself you were overreacting to a situation? Maybe you felt like you were making a mountain out of a molehill, or felt guilty about how you reacted in a stressful situation? If any of this sounds a bit too familiar, you could be a victim of selfgaslighting – and doing serious harm to your mental wellbeing.
WHAT IS GASLIGHTING?
This term is now a commonplace phrase, but it originated decades ago in a 1938 play and later in a 1944 film adaptation titled Gaslight. Throughout, an abusive husband manipulates his wife into believing she’s going mad. In one attempt he turns on the gas lights in an upstairs flat, causing the lights to dim in their own home. When his wife brings this up, he convinces her she imagined this – which is a telltale sign of gaslighting and how the term came to be. Clinical neuropsychologist Caroline Gurvich explains that gaslighting is a form of manipulation where a person, or sometimes a group, makes someone question their perception of reality, their

memories and their feelings. It’s most often associated with abusive intimate relationships, and it may look like attempts to counter your memory, frequent lying, denial and deflecting blame.
WHAT EXACTLY IS SELF-GASLIGHTING?
According to Gurvich, in the case of selfgaslighting a person questions their own beliefs, emotions and self-worth. “This might manifest as someone constantly questioning their reality or their memories, suppressing or trivialising their emotions, or invalidating their thoughts and experiences,” she says. “For example having a thought or reaction and then questioning that thought, ‘I’m being too sensitive’, ‘I shouldn’t have reacted like that’ or ‘I shouldn’t have thought that.’” Often people mistake this kind of self-talk as being strong and emotionally resilient, however it’s important to acknowledge and validate your feelings rather than dismiss them.
HOW TO IDENTIFY IT AS A PROBLEM
Self-gaslighting can come in all different shapes and sizes, and it can often be challenging to identify in yourself. In some cases it looks like minimising your own emotions, but there are other more insidious forms, too. One of these is constantly doubting yourself. Those with this tendency are likely to undermine their desires by questioning their abilities. Constantly thinking your ideas are stupid and not worth listening to and that your decisions are wrong is a type of gaslighting. Another telltale sign is hesitating over your own memories. If you continually lack confidence over whether your recollections are true (“I think I sent that email, but I’m pretty unreliable so I probably didn’t”) and don’t trust your ability to remember something you could be self-gaslighting. Always finding blame in yourself can also be an indicator of a problem. When someone behaves in a negative way around you, is your first instinct to immediately blame yourself for their actions? Letting this
inner critic have a voice can help enable self-gaslighting.
WHAT IS THE HARM?
Just as gaslighting in a relationship has a negative impact on you so too does selfgaslighting. Gurvich explains that many of the concepts associated with it can lead to a diminished self-worth and diminished self-confidence, which she says are both features of many mental health conditions such as depression.
HOW CAN WE UNLEARN THIS BEHAVIOUR?
The first step on any road to recovery is recognition and acknowledgment of a problem. Gurvich believes that becoming aware of your self-gaslighting moments is the key, then actively changing your mindset. “The first step is recognising when you are invalidating your thoughts or invalidating the emotions that you are feeling,” she says. “The next step is acknowledging that the emotions or thoughts are valid. Do this by using self-affirming statements such as ‘My emotions are real’, ‘I have the right to express them.’”
3 EASY SWAPS INSTEAD OF “It’s all my fault anyway.” SAY “Nothing is all my fault and placing the blame on me doesn’t make it true.” INSTEAD OF “It’s really not that bad. I’m overreacting.” SAY “My feelings are valid and I’m allowed to feel this way.” INSTEAD OF “I’m so stupid, there must be something wrong with me.” SAY “I am enough just the way I am.”

rom mood swings to bloating and painful cramps, hormones are those unpredictable friends that have a way of causing havoc at the worst possible times. But there’s a growing trend that some followers swear by. It’s called seed cycling, and it’s designed to help get that delicate hormonal balance back into whack. “Many women’s hormonal rhythms are imbalanced due to chronic stress, poor sleep, poor diet, inflammation, poor liver function and chronic toxin exposure,” explains nutritionist and naturopath Michaela Sparrow. “This can impact things
like perimenopause symptoms, PMS, our menstrual cycle and fertility. Seed cycling is gentle, easily accessible for everyone and an affordable way to help women rebalance their hormonal rhythms.” But while seed cycling can be beneficial, Sparrow adds, “It’s also recommended that you look at the underlying cause of what is causing these imbalances.”

These phases are governed largely by two hormones, oestrogen and progesterone – and Sparrow says that’s where seed cycling comes in. “These hormones rely on many minerals, vitamins and fatty acids to be produced and used in the body,” she explains. “By using specific types of The key is to be patient. “You will need to do this for a minimum of three to – depending on your hormones, it can take up to 12 months to restore proper balance.”

Halloumi Saganaki SERVES 4 INGREDIENTS 300g halloumi cheese 1 medium egg
Couple of handfuls of rocket leaves
4 tbsp fine semolina or polenta
4-5 fresh figs, quartered (optional)
3 tbsp sunflower oil
3 tbsp pomegranate seeds
2 tbsp runny honey
Black pepper
1 tsp finely chopped thyme leaves
METHOD
1
Cut the halloumi into 8 thick slices. Beat the egg in a small bowl and lay the semolina or polenta out on a plate. Dip the halloumi slices in the beaten egg, then roll them in the semolina or polenta so they have a crust around them. Heat the oil in a non-stick frying pan until it’s hot, then fry the halloumi pieces for a few minutes on each side until they are golden brown. Place on some kitchen paper to soak up any excess oil. Meanwhile, heat the honey in a small saucepan with the thyme. Now assemble the dish. Place the rocket on a serving plate and arrange the halloumi on top, nestling the figs around, if using. Drizzle a little of the hot honey over each slice of halloumi. Finish with a smattering of pomegranate seeds and grind over some black pepper.

Garlicky Eggplant Salad INGREDIENTS 3 large eggplants (total weight about 1kg) 245g full-fat Greekstyle yoghurt 1 fat garlic clove, minced 1 tbsp chopped parsley leaves, plus more to serve 1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil, plus more to serve Salt and black pepper
SERVES 4
METHOD
1
Preheat the oven to 220°C. Pierce each eggplant with a fork all over, then place on a baking tray and roast for 1 hour, or until completely soft. You want the eggplants to completely collapse in on themselves and for the skins to be charred. Remove the eggplants from the oven, slice them in half with a knife and leave to cool. Once they are completely cold, scoop out the eggplant flesh with a spoon. Discard the eggplant skins and roughly chop any big pieces of eggplant pulp. Place this in a serving bowl and add the yoghurt, garlic, parsley, ¾ tsp salt, ½ tsp black pepper and the extra-virgin olive oil. Stir well with a fork to get everything evenly combined and then taste to adjust the seasoning. Cover with a plate or cling film and pop it in the refrigerator, leaving it to sit for at least 1 hour before serving. Finish with a drizzle of olive oil and a smattering of chopped parsley.

Greek Tomato Meatballs SERVES 4
INGREDIENTS FOR THE TOMATO SAUCE 2 tbsp olive oil 1 small onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 400g can tomatoes 2 tbsp tomato purée 150ml just-boiled water ½ tsp dried thyme Pinch of ground cinnamon ½ tsp ground cumin ½ tsp sweet paprika 1 bay leaf 1 tsp sugar Salt and black pepper
FOR THE MEATBALLS 300g minced lamb or pork 300g minced beef 70g breadcrumbs Large handful of parsley leaves, finely chopped, plus more to serve 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped ½ medium onion, grated 1 large egg, lightly beaten ¾ tsp ground cumin ¼ tsp ground cinnamon ½ tsp sweet paprika Light olive oil, for the tray and the meatballs Extra-virgin olive oil, to serve
METHOD
1
Begin by preparing the tomato sauce. Heat the olive oil in a medium saucepan, add the onion and gently fry over a medium heat for about 10 minutes, or until soft. Add the garlic and fry for another few minutes. Add the rest of the ingredients with ½ tsp salt and ½ tsp black pepper, stir well, cover and leave to simmer for 20 minutes. Place all the ingredients for the meatballs (except the oils) in a large bowl, season with 1½ tsp salt and ½ tsp black pepper and mix together with your hands. Lightly oil a large baking tray, roll the meat into about 20 balls and transfer to the tray. Preheat the oven to 210°C. Brush the meatballs with a little more light olive oil, then pop them in the oven and cook for 10-12 minutes, turning frequently until browned. Add the meatballs to the tomato sauce and simmer for 15 minutes so the meat absorbs the flavours of the sauce. Just before serving, sprinkle with chopped parsley and a drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil.

For lovers of blue cheese try … riesling or fortified • Something with plenty of sweet fruit flavours to balance the strong flavours of blue cheese For lovers of goat’s cheese, try … sauvignon blanc • The ultimate classic combination, the high acidity in both magically counteracts each other to create perfect harmony. That being said, goat’s cheese works incredibly well with other whites as well! For lovers of creamy camembert and brie try … chardonnay or semillion • The combination of rich texture and high acidity is what makes chardonnay so cheese-friendly.

The Hidden Sea Chardonnay thehiddensea.com
With styles from fresh and fruity to oaky and buttery, it’s the perfect accompaniment to soft, creamy fromager d’Affinois. For lovers of gruyère and gouda try … dry chardonnay or riesling • Try an off-dry riesling – its acidity and tropical notes feel cleansing and fresh partnered with these nutty cheeses. A lightly oaked-style chardonnay will also pair beautifully. For lovers of hard cheeses like cheddar or manchego try ... sparkling wine or champagne • The rich flavour profile of a sharp cheddar cheese partners perfectly with champagne, almost as good as a prosecco and parmesan!

WINE NOTES BY: CLEO MUNNS
There is a lot to love about a simple cheese board and whether you’re entertaining friends or indulging yourself on a night in, the humble cheese board is made even better with the right wines. The ultimate platter will contain a combination of hard, soft and blue cheeses. Although there are red wines and cheeses that pair perfectly, like port and stilton, most reds overpower the subtle flavours of cheese. Whites, fortified wines and light reds are generally a much better match. We have compiled a few of our favourite white wine and cheese combos to take your entertaining skills to the next level.

MAY 21–JUN. 20
Are you feeling more spiritual yet? You’re in a cosmic cycle. As you start to get more in touch with yourself (which is going to happen over the coming few months), your friends are going to see changes in you. In a nutshell, you’re going to be easier to get along with. Your popularity is on the up and up, too!
Hopefully you’ve started to have more fun recently? Even though you’re now in a far more social cycle, don’t neglect your working life altogether. This week, think about what you want to rebuild in your working life or your business. Try to find a balance between seeing friends and pursuing your ambitions.
You’re a sign that loves some mental stimulation. If mind-expanding study or travel plans have to go on hold now though, it’s not the end of the world. Everything is happening in divine timing. The best thing you can do is focus on your professional life. You have stars for soaring success and big changes over the coming weeks.

JUL. 22–AUG. 22
AUG. 23–SEP. 22
This week’s forecast comes with a little warning: you’re now entering an annual four-week period when you need to lay low and just relax. The less energy you expend right now, the better. Chill out. You have celestial permission to pretend you’re in another lockdown. It’s OK to be out of circulation for a while, if you want/need to.
With Saturn in your love zone, 2021 was always going to be challenging. You’ve been tested by the people in your life for months and that’s not going to end any time soon. However, the coming few weeks will be the right time for you to rebuild any personal or professional relationships that need it. Go one day at a time.
You Virgos are so amazing about helping others. But are you also starting to have a good time yet? Hopefully you’re starting to feel the good vibes in your life, as lucky Jupiter beams down on you. Now is the perfect time to go over how your daily life runs and ticks over. Make sure your routines are working for you.

The good news is your life should be about to get more enjoyable. If you haven’t managed to have as much fun as you’d like recently, that could change. Take a look at your social life and see what needs re-sorting. Are you allowing yourself enough time off for good behaviour? Overall, life should be more enjoyable.
You’re still in the eye of the astrological storm. If your home life feels heavy or your family situation is taxing, try not to obsess over it. The more you look for solutions rather than constantly focusing on or (worse!) talking about it to others, the better. The good news is that your life is getting more fun now, overall.
You were born with a lucky gift: eternal optimism. Try not to allow worries override your excellent instincts to have fun no matter what. Avoid focusing on anything that brings you down. Focus on the positive! The best use of current energy in your chart is to work out how to train your brain. Think good thoughts.

You always have one eye on your future. Now is the time to work out how to restructure your finances so that you’re saving a little something for what comes next. Putting money away for your goals is massively important, but especially right now for you. You need to set yourself up for the coming 15 years!
It’s not 100 per cent easy to be you right now. You are under pressure, but like the grit that polishes the pearl, you can come out of your current cycle stronger and wiser. Tap in as Saturn retrogrades in your sign and reconstruct anything and everything in your life that needs it, physically or metaphorically.

JR REYNE
THE HOME AND AWAY NEWBIE DISCUSSES THE TV DRAMA AND SOCIAL MEDIA Having previously starred on Neighbours, Aussie actor Jaime Robbie “JR” Reyne is no stranger to the Aussie soap opera world. But after stepping onto the set of Home and Away, where he now stars as Emmett, Reyne, 36, says he’s never felt more at home. “I’ve been lucky to be a part of so many great sets,” he tells WHO. “But the team at Home and Away are truly a family, and they make you feel like you’re a part of it from the start.” Were you a fan of Home and Away prior to joining the cast? Of course! It’s un-Australian not to be! The drama will examine body issues and dealing with the pressures of social media. Is it good to be involved in a show that tackles serious subjects? I think it’s so important that a show like Home and Away is tackling serious issues and bringing such matters into people's lounge rooms. And as for social media, I understand that it’s a tool for work and can be enjoyed in a healthy way, but I think the line, “We're a sad generation with happy pictures,” is pretty true
and not great at all. I think the more we put our phones away and look up and not down, the better we'll all be from it. You’re also a musician. How does it feel to be touring again? It’s been amazing! I’ve played a bunch of shows recently around New South Wales and ACT, and to be back out there on stage in front of an audience has been quite surreal. It’s something that I’ve done for so long and yet because of COVID-19, I truly didn’t know when or if it would ever happen again. I’m definitely not taking it for granted now. What is coming up next for you? Well, besides Home and Away, I’m also the promo voice for ABC TV and have a new single coming out that I wrote with Julia Stone. I’ll be touring that, too, so stay tuned! What are you reading right now? I have a bit of book club going on with a friend – we’re the only members [laughs]. I’m currently reading Uncommon People: The Rise and Fall of The Rock Stars by David Hepworth – it’s a cracking read. (Watch Home and Away Mon-Thu., 7pm on Channel Seven)

MOVIE A QUIET PLACE PART II
STARRING: Emily Blunt, Cillian Murphy If John Krasinski had known there was going to be a sequel to his hugely successful horror movie, 2018’s A Quiet Place, he’s joked he wouldn’t have killed off his own character. Fortunately, having written and directed the follow-up film, A Quiet Place Part II, and starring in flashbacks, Krasinski’s name is both literally and figuratively all over it. “I was just really excited to see what John could do with this second one because he had all the wings of confidence from the first one,” Krasinski’s real-life wife Emily Blunt, 38, who also stars in the film, told WHO's sister publication People of the sequel. Picking up right where it left off, the Abbott family (Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe) must now face the terrors of the outside world without Lee (Krasinski), as they continue their fight for survival in silence. Forced to venture into the unknown, they quickly realise the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats that lurk beyond the sand path. “If the first movie is about parenthood and the promise that you make to your kids that I'll keep you safe no matter what … The second one is about that promise being broken and it's about growing up and it's about moving on and dealing with loss. For me this whole movie becomes about community. It’s about who do you trust in dark times and the power of relying on other people in dark times,” Krasinski, 41, explains. (In cinemas Thu., May 27)
TV GEORDIE SHORE: TEN YEARS ON THE TOON The two-part anniversary Geordie Shore stars, including James Tindale and Chloe Ferry, revisit the infamous UK reality series a decade later. While fans have since seen them face their toughest challenge yet, becoming grown-ups in OGs, they're about to be taken on the nostalgic ride of their lives to where it all started. “When we first entered the Geordie Shore house all those years ago, none of us knew how much our lives would change,” Crosby, 30, says of the special. “I’m so so excited to relive some of the best – and craziest – moments.” (Premieres Wed., May 26, 6pm on MTV)
TV SOLOS Starring some of the biggest actors of our time, including Uzo Aduba, Morgan Freeman, Anne Hathaway, Helen Mirren and Constance Wu, this anthology series explores the strange, beautiful, heartbreaking, hilarious and wondrous truths of what it means to be human. As the characters grapple with time travel, AI robots, solo trips to the farthest reaches of the universe, scheming smart homes, a mysterious waiting room, near-future fertility treatments and illegal memory transplants, the show aims to illuminate the deeper meaning of human connection. THE KID LAROI
THE AUSTRALIAN ARTIST HAS TEAMED UP WITH MILEY The past 18 months have been a whirlwind for Sydney teen The Kid Laroi. The 17-year-old has racked up over a billion streams online, peaked at No. 3 on the US Billboard 200 albums chart and became the youngest ever Australian solo artist to land a No. 1 ARIA gold-certified album with 2020’s F*ck Love. Last year he was nominated for Best Male Artist, Breakthrough Artist and Best Hip-Hop release at the ARIAs. Now Charlton Howard – whose artist name derives from his Kamilaroi Indigenous heritage – is back on top of the
charts (here and in the US), thanks to a second release of his hit track ‘Without You’ – this time as a remixed duet with Miley Cyrus. The pair performed the track on Saturday Night Live recently. It’s not his first superstar collab either – Laroi also duetted with Justin Bieber on his track ‘Unstable’. Elton John is also a fan. “He’s going to be one of the biggest artists in the world,” the Brit hitmaker has said. Despite all the accolades, attention and increasing success, Laroi is determined to keep his feet on the ground. “Knowing your
from is very important,” he told Billboard magazine recently. “It’s super-important to carry that and be proud of your heritage.” As a young Aussie singer bringing it to the world stage, The Kid Laroi is definitely one to watch and be proud of. (‘Without You’ is out now)

MEREDITH JAFFE THE AUTHOR SPILLS ON THE UNUSUAL INSPIRATION FOR HER THIRD BOOK A prison might not be the first place you think as the setting for a heartwarming family drama, but Aussie author Meredith Jaffé thought it was the perfect venue. In The Dressmakers of Yarrandarah Prison, Jaffé tells the story of Derek, who is doing time after embezzling from his local golf club and hoping to reconcile with his estranged daughter Debbie. After hearing of her engagement, Derek gets together the motley gang of crims he is imprisoned with to form a sewing circle to make Debbie’s wedding dress. The idea came to Jaffé when she learned about a British charity called Fine Cell Work, which teaches prisoners fine needle skills and quilting. “Stitching is meditative and allows time to reflect on past deeds and regrets,” Jaffé tells WHO. “But most of all, it proves that things of beauty can come from dark lonely places,” she adds. Congratulations are in order for Ariana Grande, who has secretly wed Dalton Gomez. The singer, 27, and her real estate beau, 25, tied the knot in an “intimate” ceremony on May 15 at her home in Montecito, California. “They got married,” a representative for the singer confirmed to WHO’s sister publication People magazine. “It was tiny and intimate – less than 20 people. The room was so happy and full of love.
