7 BAND-AIDS. 3 LOST SOCKETS. 2 BUSTED KNUCKLES.
A LIFETIME OF EXPERIENCE. When you work on a truck, you understand your knuckles, and your tools, might take a beating. It’s just part of the deal. But the experience you gain from completing the job, more than makes up for a few sore muscles and a couple lost sockets. At LMC Truck, we’ve built our business on helping those who love turning their own wrenches.

S MOST RELEVANT COMPANIES CAN ATTEST, EVOLVING WITH THE LANDSCAPE THAT SURROUNDS THE INDUSTRY IN WHICH YOUR DEMOGRAPHIC THRIVES IS A MANDATORY PROCESS DURING DAY-TO-DAY OPERATIONS. As a media company in 2021, we can’t just stick to what we’ve been doing great for the last 21 years. We have to continue being great at print while learning and developing new and interesting forms of media to keep our audience entertained. It’s a delicate balance between quality and quantity, and we think we’re doing a pretty good job at keeping up with the pack. In 2021, the team at Street Trucks is not only producing 21 independent publications based solely around the custom truck industry, but we are all also livestreaming at least 10 national events from around the country and even hosting three of our own “quality over quantity” show-and-shine events. By setting up at locations from coast to coast, these three events will cover the entire nation. The first event has already passed, but you still have time to make Stage 2 in Texas. A full detailed summary of this year’s event schedule can be seen on pages 120-122. This issue is stacked with some really great feature trucks that are not only worthy of the best of show award but can also be seen driving down the road on any given weekend. We choose our feature trucks by having them pass a checklist with high standards and demanding criteria, but at the end of the day they must be drivers as our title suggests. We also dive deep into the wild world of vehicle wraps. We learned a lot, and we have a lot to talk about. You can catch that story on page 70. Hope to see you all this July in Texas for Stage 2 of the Street Truck’s Show Off Series. For more information head over to www.showoffseries.com.

ROUSH PERFORMANCE TAKING PRE-ORDERS FOR ITS OFF-ROAD READY 2021 F-150
R
OUSH Performance has announced that its 2021 F-150 is now available for pre-order. This truck is the result of the brand’s rich racing history. From the corners of Pikes Peak to the silt of Baja, Roush brings its commitment to off-road performance to the modern pickup. The ’21 Roush F-150 comes standard with a custom-valved set of Roush/Fox 2.0 shocks, and the front coilover shocks are outfitted with tuned performance springs that lift the front end 2 inches, leveling the stance of the truck. General Tire 33-inch Grabber A/TX tires are paired with 20-inch gray Roush wheels to complement the suspension upgrades. The Roush F-150 also comes equipped with a cat-back dual-tip exhaust system. Exterior enhancements for the Roush F-150 include a set of Roush wide-body fender flares with integrated accent lights and heat extracting vents, as well as a signature Roush graphics package. Inside, standard equipment includes a Roush gauge cluster, serialized badging, custom pedals with rubberized grips for secure foot control and custom Roush floor liners by WeatherTech. Performance options for the ’21 Roush F-150 include the .12.

Roush Performance brake package featuring six-piston Alcon front brakes with upgraded 13.7-inch rotors and high-friction pads, and a Roush active control exhaust system, which uses integrated electronic valves to allow the driver to quickly switch between exhaust modes via a console-mounted switch. An Extreme Off-Road Upgrade will be available later this year that will include suspension and tire upgrades for even greater off-road performance. “The all-new F-150 has been a highly anticipated project for us,” said Jack Roush Jr. “While our roots are in high-performance Mustangs, we’ve taken that knowledge and our racing prowess and applied to the all-new 2021 F-150.” To pre-order or configure your own 2021 Roush F-150, please contact your local Roush dealer or visit https://www.roushperformance.com/ vehicles/2021-roush-f-150.html to learn more.

PERSONAL POWER
STUD KITS FOR BIG BLOCK CHEVY
THE VOXX POWER SYSTEM IS AN INTELLIGENT BATTERY-BACKUP SYSTEM THAT GIVES YOU AND YOUR RIDE THE POWER YOU NEED WHEN YOU NEED IT MOST. The VPS allows anyone to jump-start their vehicle from the comfort of the driver’s seat via a Bluetooth app, eliminating the need to rely on roadside assistance.
THE AUTOMOTIVE AFTERMARKET CONTINUES TO EMBRACE THE POPULAR BIG BLOCK CHEVROLET ENGINE, AS NEW CYLINDER HEAD CONFIGURATIONS AND BLOCK DESIGNS ARE INTRODUCED ON AN ONGOING BASIS. Industry-leading fastener manufacturer ARP has recently introduced kits designed for use with Dart Pro 20°, Edelbrock Big Victor 12° and Big Victor 24° aluminum cylinder heads.
This patent-pending innovation is designed to overcome the deficiencies of similar products on the market. Most jump-start products today are portable but rely heavily on the end-user ensuring that their product is sufficiently charged so it’s ready to jump-start when needed. The compactness of the VOXX Power System is designed to be installed in your ride and connected directly to the battery. It will be continually charged due to a custom battery-charger circuit that charges only when the vehicle’s engine is running. VOXX ELECTRONICS www.voxxelectronics.com
Manufactured from premium grade 8740 steel and heat treated to 190,000 psi tensile strength, they are ideally suited for many engine combinations. The threads are rolled (not cut) following heat-treat and have 10 times better fatigue life than studs made through ordinary methods. They are far superior to factory hardware and can provide additional clamping force with an e ARP FASTENERS 800-826-3045 www.arp-bolts.com
TRICK FLOW MOPAR DOES YOUR LA SERIES SMALL BLOCK MOPAR NEED A MIDRANGE POWER BOOST? Trick Flow’s Track Heat intake manifold is just the ticket. Its one-piece spider-type design features extended high-flow runners and a raised plenum floor to increase power in the 3,000 to 7,000 rpm range— right where a street or mild race engine needs it most. The Track Heat intake is dyno-optimized for Trick Flow’s PowerPort 190 cylinder heads, but it works well with most aftermarket cylinder heads. Trick Flow added extra material around the port openings for custom port matching, plus
bosses that can be drilled for nitrous nozzles. Mmm, nitrous. The Trick Flow Track Heat intake manifold accepts any 4150-style square bore carburetor. With a carburetor mounting pad height of 5.125 inches, the manifold should fit under most hoods. SUMMIT RACING EQUIPMENT 800-230-3030 www.summitracing.com
INTERIOR BATTERY DISCONNECT LOKAR PERFORMANCE PRODUCTS’ INTERIOR BATTERY DISCONNECT LEVER KIT IS THE SAFEST AND QUICKEST WAY TO SHUT OFF ALL ELECTRICAL POWER RIGHT FROM THE DRIVER’S SEAT. The red anodized billet aluminum hand lever is designed for quick visual recognition and quick actuation. Compatible with fire system kill switches, each kit comes standard with an 8-foot push/pull cable with additional cable lengths available. Manufactured in the USA, the kits can be floor mounted or are available in kits to bolt directly to your shifter. Kits are available for B&M Pro Ratchet, Thunder Stick, Outlaw, Lightning and ST Quarter Stick shifters, and each kit can be purchased with or without the master power switch. .18.

E LIVE IN AN AGE OF INSTANT GRATIFICATION, BUT THE OLD SAYING, “IF YOU WANT IT BAD, YOU GET IT BAD,” CERTAINLY APPLIES WHEN THE CREATIVE PROCESS IS HURRIED. Great art takes whatever time it takes, especially when you are talking about building award-winning custom trucks. The combination of imagination and craftsmanship is a delicate blend that can’t be rushed, often needing years before the truck first rolls into the winner’s circle. Mel White from Boynton Beach, Florida, understands the methodical approach to success. “I started work on my Pro-Street Chevrolet in my late 30s, and now that I’m 50, it’s finally complete,” Mel says. “The construction process had lots of hiccups along the way. Things got scratched, things got lost, and family issues complicated the

process. There was a time when I thought I went too deep with a frame-off restoration and might not be able to pull it off. In the end, however, the hard work was worth it and now my truck is a rolling dream.” The beginnings of his dream truck trace back to a red ’89 Chevrolet Silverado purchased brand-new by a very excited 20-year-old. “I knew right then that this was an amazing body

style and, if I had the money one day, I would ProStreet one.” That first ride planted a seed that took a while to germinate. Years later at age 35, Mel discovered this’97 Chevrolet Silverado at a Car-Max dealership. It was a beautiful truck, but after owning it for six months, he drove it into his shop one night and completely disassembled it. He smiles when he recalls his wife STREETTRUCKSMAG.COM | JUNE 2021

coming into the garage and seeing the fenders hanging on the wall and doors separated from the body. She asked, “What did you do to that truck that was working perfectly?” “It’s time to make it mine,” Mel replied. At the time, however, he didn’t realize the process would take 15 years! Since everything starts with a firm foundation, the chassis began with a new back half by Neil Armstrong of Neil Armstrong Engineering in Lake Worth, Florida. Neil is a talented craftsman who Mel first met as a teenager. After learning that Mel wanted to build something aggressive for the street, Neil’s initial guidance was simple. “Go get the biggest tire you can find, and I will make it fit,” he says. Mel returned with a set of 22.5-inch-wide Hoosier tires. Neil, dealing with almost 4 feet of rubber, met the challenge by narrowing a Ford 9-inch using a pair of stub axles. The rear was upgraded with 3.90 gears, Wilwood disc brakes and an air shocks/air bags combination held in place with ladder bars and diagonal link. Up front, factory components were enhanced with 2-inch drop spindles and modified .26.

shocks to accommodate the new air bags. An Accuair compressor powers the system using a 3-gallon reserve tank and compressor, both located under the sheetmetal bed on the driver’s side. The rest of the chassis is strengthened with an 8-point cage with drop down bars for the doors, built more for the street than for the strip. The ‘Big‘N Littles’ begin with slim JEGS SSR rims up front paired with fat Sanders Bead Locks in the rear. Mickey T and Hosier rubber provide a shed load of traction. Moving quickly was always part of the plan. The aggressive party piece squeezed into the
engine compartment began at the Daytona Turkey Run when Mel met Roy Anania, a specialist in Pro mod and nostalgia motors. Mel explained what he was building, and Roy suggested a 454 with a 671 blower producing about 600 hp. Mel quickly vetoed the idea, saying he did not want something that everyone else had. Roy counters, “How about with a 540ci Merlin with an 871 blower making around 1,000 hp?” “Where do I sign?” says Mel with a smile. The Merlin block has a 10.2inch deck height that can handle up to a 4.75-inch stroke, and

the 8.5 compression is the right number to handle the 8 pounds of boost from the BDS 871 Roots-style supercharger. The truck runs a pair of 850 cfm Pro System high-performance carbs, soon to be replaced with a fuel injection setup as part of Mel’s “relentless refinement” approach. The Cerakote ceramic exhaust system reduces back pressure using custom headers that feed huge 5-inch collectors and 5-inch Flowmasters, dumping in front of the rear wheels. Collecting engine room style points, the sheetmetal inner fender panels conceal wiring and braided hoses, creating a sanitary look. Subtle gray paint accents on the blower, valve covers and the intake blades on the Garlits “Hat” air cleaner contrast with shiny black everywhere. The “Hat” was one of Mel’s earliest purchases that later served as inspiration for the carb setup on the Merlin. Power from the big V-8 is transmitted through a Turbo 400 automatic with a reverse manual valve body and a red trans brake button on the Coan Engineering Kwik-Shift ratchet shifter. The combination pumps out a fairly insane 975 hp on pump gas with 8 pounds of boost, creating enough torque (750 lb-ft) to buckle the neighborhood asphalt! Lots of innovations were accomplished inside, beginning with the dash from a Chevy Baja .28.

truck. White face Auto Meter gauges keep track of all the action while the tilt steering column holds a custom wheel. Highperformance was key, but creature comforts were essential from the outset. The Restomod Air A/C is tucked underneath the passenger side and all the electronics are easily accessed through the central panel. “Throughout the build, the thought was to plan ahead,” Mel told us. “If I have to work on something, I want to make it easily accessible.” Those aggressively bolstered seats were custom made by Mel’s friend DJ of DJ’s Interiors in Lake Worth, Florida, featuring double stitching that matches the light gray on the harness and dash. The elimination of the hood solves blower fitment concerns and presents the details on the monster motor for all to see. In the rear, the LED taillights feature smoked lenses and the appropriate “FAST N LOW” license plate. Almost unnoticed, the bed was moved closer to the rear cab wall to close the gap. Inside the gray powdercoated bed, huge aluminum tubs cover the ultrawide rear tires while the 20-gallon fuel cell feeds the thirsty engine.

Surprisingly, the shiny black truck was painted 12 years ago in Mel’s friend’s garage, and it still looks amazing. Now that it’s complete, those long construction hours are just a distant memory. “If I didn’t have the money to buy the right piece, I would hold off until I could afford it,” Mel recalls. “While it might not be good as an investment, my heart is in this truck and when I drive it, I know every nut and bolt!” Mel drives the truck on the street all the time heading to area car shows. Although it’s more of a cruiser than a racer, he occasionally finds himself next to someone for a brief light-tolight encounter. We think it’s unfortunate that Ferrari already chose the name “Superfast” for its 812 Grand Tourer since this truck could easily claim that title!

VERY NOW AND THEN, WE MUST RESET OUR MINDS WHEN PLANNING OUT A NEW PROJECT. That was the case for Henry as he is no newbie to the custom scene. His past builds involved classic cars and a few modern muscle cars that he would take to local car shows. So, this time around, he wanted to change things up a bit and build a
sport truck. After seeing the sport truck scene grow larger and larger, Henry wanted his 2000 Chevy extended cab Silverado to be able to lay out on the ground as well as have plenty of power at any stoplight to take on any unsuspecting sports cars. The stock 5.3L motor was a good candidate to install a ProCharger’s high output intercooled system with P-1SC set to 9 psi. Next on the list of performance mods was an MSD ignition, Crane camshaft, ported and polished heads, AIRAID intake and PowerAid throttle body spacer. This setup provided a healthy 450 RWHP to his not-so-stock truck anymore. To give his truck the adjustable suspension he was looking for, Henry took his truck to Innovation by Design in Norman, Oklahoma. Once in the shop, his truck received a full front and rear Ridetech setup that was a complete bolt-on. This included the company’s front and rear HQ Series Shockwaves, front upper and lower strong arms, bolt-on three-link, drop spindles and front muscle bar. An Accuair E-Level system was installed next to helped control the ride height. With the truck back at home, a wheel setup was next. Henry looked up Billet Specialties for a set of its 6-lug .34.

TRUCK SPECS SL series 20/22-inch combo billet rims that would be wrapped in a set of Nitto 555 tires. To aid with improved stopping power, Henry decided on a set up Power Stop slotted front and rear rotors. Now that the performance and suspension modifications were completed, Henry knew it was time to change up the interior. So, he had a set of Katzkin leather seat covers installed to replace his stock cloth ones. Next, a healthy array of billet interior pieces replaced the factory ones to give his it a true show truck look. To wrap out the interior, a full Pioneer stereo system was installed to provide a nice loud beat to his tunes. Henry was ready for the exterior to go under the knife to give it that custom sport truck look he was after, so he used a Corvette styled body kit to give
his truck a clean sport truck look. Next, he installed a Trenz flamed billet grille to match the planned flame job. Then, the truck was sprayed with a bright PPG colored Millennium yellow with a set of gray flames over it. The Millennium yellow color was carried over into the engine compartment as well as the custom bed floor notch cover. With his Silverado out of the body shop, Henry was ecstatic knowing he had achieved what he set out to accomplish and build: a supercharged full-size pickup that he could go cruise down any highway and have the power to go up against any opponent at the stoplight. Henry would like to thank his lovely wife Patsy for her support along the way. Plus, Justin Arnold, Ronnie Sexton and Jorge Alvarado with helping him create a truly powerful sport truck.

DIY Dropped Chevy LOWERING A 2019+ SILVERADO
W
HETHER YOUR TRUCK IS LIFTED, LOWERED, BAGGED OR BODIED, MAKING SURE IT HAS THE RIGHT STANCE FOR YOUR STYLE AND NEEDS IS IMPORTANT. Since you’re reading this magazine, we’re guessing the style we left out— stock—isn’t something you’re too fond of. That’s why, when we had the chance to get our hands on this 2019 Chevy Silverado Crew Cab and upgrade the stock suspension with a 3-inch/5-inch lowering kit, we up the install and got the parts ordered. The truck already had a set of 26-inch wheels and tires, so this mild drop would set the truck down closer to the tires and lose the massive wheel gap. To handle the install, we teamed up with the crew at Counts
Kustoms in Las Vegas, but if you follow through the install photos, you can see that if you have basic wrenching skills and access to a lift, or even jack stands, you can knock this install out with a couple friends. For the parts, we reached out to IHC Suspension and got its 2019 Chevy/GMC 2WD and 4WD lowering kit with helper bags (Part # IHC-1920GMCk-35), which retails for $1,400 and comes with everything you’ll need to tackle this install. This kit will lower the front of the truck 3 inches and the rear 5 inches. This will eliminate the factory rake that all trucks come with and let the truck sit level. With it including
the rear helper bags, it ensures when loading the bed or towing a trailer, the truck won’t have any sag in the rear and will still ride and handle nicely. The front kit comes with new upper and lower control arms and keeps the factory spindle and strut, which keeps the truck riding the same as stock. The rear requires the leaf springs to be flipped and a new leaf spring hanger to be installed, as well as the helper bags. The install can be done in a day and gives the truck a classy look. Follow along as we show you the basic steps to install this SOURCES lowering • IHC Suspension kit. 956-424-6901 www.Ihcsuspension.com @inezhotrods_customs • Counts Kustoms 702-733-6216 www.countskustoms.com @countskustoms

Remove both stock bump stops to allow for more clearance. With the new helper bags, you won’t need them.
02
Cut off the bump stop brackets and grind them smooth.

Unbolt the front leaf spring hangers. Thankfully, GM decided to flip the front driver-side bolt, so the gas tank doesn’t have to be removed like the previous generations did.

05
Making sure the rear axle is supported, unbolt the U-bolts that hold the leaves to the axle.
06
07
As you can see, the new IHC rear shackle (on the left) is shorter than the stock one. Installing this will give you the extra drop needed that flipping the rear leaves need to get you to the 5-inch drop.

The factory spring perches have to be removed since the leaves will now be below the axle.

14
Press the shock bushing sleeves into the ends of the supplied shorter shocks.
15
Bolt the upper bag brackets together on each side. They sandwich the frame and secure the mounting point for the top of the helper bags.
Z
Bolt the new shocks to the factory shock mounting points with the factory hardware you removed when removing the stock shocks.
16
Bolt in the supplied air bags and run the airline that’s included with the kit to your desired accessible location. For this set up, the truck owner opted to run them to the rear bumper and use shop air and a Schrader valve any time he needs to inflate the air bags. When this is done, the rear is complete and ready to install the wheels.
Once
an alignment was done on the truck, it was ready to go. As you can see, it now sits closer to the tires and eliminates the wheel gap. It also sits level and has a much classier look than it did at stock height.

THE SCOTTSDALE
T
HIS YEAR APPEARS TO BE THE YEAR OF THE BRONCO. The highly anticipated and long-awaited return of the iconic Ford looks to regain its place among the off-road elite. Soon you will see many on the road and on the trails. Sean Jennings is one person who couldn’t wait for the new Bronco, so he decided to build his own modern version. Sean grew up drawn to the outdoors where he would spend his free time camping and fishing. He served two tours with the Marine Corps and would often find himself out in nature riding quads, dirt bikes, and hitting the trails. After his time in the military, he went to college studying marketing and graphic design, and now works with clients in the automotive and firearms industries. His diverse background has dovetailed, where his love for the outdoors, passion for all things automotive and his creative vision have aligned to build custom vehicles. What began as a project for a client to build a marketing vehicle quickly became a personal project after the original plans were scrapped. Sean had always

wanted an older Bronco, and when plans fell through with the client, he decided to make the purchase for himself. The timing was right for the Idaho native, who lived in Arizona at the time, a place where he could enjoy the vehicle all year round. Sean found the vehicle locally from a gentleman who only used it to haul his mountain bikes. It was in good condition with a mild restoration, but it still had its fair share of issues, which he knew needed to be improved. Initially, a few minor cosmetic changes were done after the purchase as the vehicle was used for daily driving and as a weekend vehicle to hit the trails and camping. Like with any of these projects, he wanted to add his signature touches to make the Bronco his own, but after almost a year of daily driving, he decided he wanted more out of the vehicle. With his background and a desire to customize an older Bronco to incorporate a modern drivetrain, Sean began the project. He dubbed the Bronco project the “Scottsdale” as a nod to the city where he found the vehicle as well as for its lifestyle. He was inspired by his surroundings in Arizona and his daily encounters with high-end supercars. He wanted to ensure the Bronco would not only stand out, but also fit in among these fancy vehicles and hold its own on the trails with the most capable of vehicles. With more than a dozen vehicles under his belt, Sean has progressively pushed the limits for his creations. His first truck as a teenager taught him a few valuable lessons on what to do and what not to do. “I had my first truck about a year before I could drive, which is where I learned all the ways to ruin a great truck by not knowing what you are doing and wanting
to modify everything,” Sean says. “You know, spray paint all the dash panels that can be easily removed.” Since then, he’s used his experience to hone a distinct style for his builds, taking each one further and further with customization. The current Bronco started off with the intention of being a reliable vehicle that would be able to take on moderate to technical trails with his kids on the weekends. That quickly changed once he decided to convert to a
modern drivetrain with a Coyote motor. With age, his desire to do more and push himself has grown stronger, and that dedication, vision and know-how led to this one-of-a-kind Bronco. “I knew when I bought the Bronco, I would modify it to my style,” Sean says. “At first, it was going to be cosmetic, mostly because it was such a great driver, but after I decided the engine needed to be modern instead of old-school carbureted, it all really snowballed from there—all of a sudden my imagination and goals escalated very quickly.” He set an almost impossible goal of completing the restoration in a mere seven months to make its debut in the Toyo Tires Treadpass area at the annual SEMA trade show in 2019. Starting from the ground up with a vision of building a Bronco to be as reliable as a new vehicle, he knew he would need to replace and upgrade practically everything. Although he was very intentional when it came to the body and frame, and while modified, they are still original and not a reproduction. The first part was to pull STREETTRUCKSMAG.COM | JUNE 2021

the engine and begin the disassembly process. He wanted to make sure the Gen 2 Ford Performance 5.0 Coyote engine swap would fit and work properly. Everything was overhauled in the engine bay, including a host of Krawlers Edge products including motor mounts, an accessory bracket kit, stainless steel headers, radiator and electric fan. He installed a Power by the Hour engine and transmission wiring harness. He then swapped out the transmission with a 6R80 4x4 automatic that bolted directly to the Coyote engine and paired it with a Lokar cable floor shifter. For peace of mind performance for both daily driving and for off-road trails, mud, sand and other conditions, an Advanced Adapters Atlas 2 transfer case was installed. Much like everything else, a Krawlers Edge stainless steel fuel tank was installed to replace the factory tank. Rounding out the performance modifications is a custom Airaid intake and Magnaflow exhaust. The factory restored chassis would then be secured with a Krawlers Edge Sport Cage. The lifted suspension itself is a masterpiece combining various parts to come together to work in unison. A set of Bilstein coilovers with air bump stops and Eibach springs .58.

were installed to give about 4 ½ inches of total lift, which includes a 2-inch body lift to help clear the Coyote engine. To offer more geometry options and to keep the rear axle centered, a custom threelink front and four-link rear suspension were designed and installed with a pair of Currie F9 front and rear axles. The entire wheelbase was lengthened with the front axle moving forward an inch along and the rear axle moving back an inch. Connected to the axles are Warn locking hubs, which provide the ability to disconnect the front wheels from the drivetrain to help increase fuel economy and decrease drivetrain wear. To ensure maximum traction for any terrain, ARB Air Lockers were installed. The Bronco was outfitted with a full set of Wilwood brakes with a 6-piston kit up front and 4-piston kit in the rear along with a Hydroboost setup to help add stopping power for the vehicle. Sean went with 18x9 John R version Detroit Steel Wheel Co. wheels wrapped in 35x12.5 Toyo Tires Open Country R/T for added grip and performance both on the streets and in the dirt. The interior wasn’t ignored, and every part was carefully curated. The eye-catching plush red leather upholstery complements the custom dashboard painted to match the exterior paint and is paired with black weather resistant vinyl with contrast red stitching by Bell Auto Upholstery. The console also features Vintage Air billet in-dash vents to allow the driver and passenger a more comfortable ride. An Icon 4x4 center console was added for a factory look. The front seats were swapped out for a pair of Scheelman front bucket seats that received the same red leather treatment. The minor details weren’t excluded as a host of Ring Brothers interior components were installed

To finish off the interior a layer of Line-X was applied for additional durability and protection. One noticeable modification that stood out for Sean is the Wild Horses wing window delete kit. “It might seem simple compared to the rest of the build, but my favorite modification is the wing window delete,” says Sean. “Having a larger window is not only more modern but seemed to change the driving experience.” The vehicle was originally painted a matte black by the previous owner. Sean wanted a more sophisticated and yet timeless look for the new version and elected to spray the exterior in a PPG Porsche Chalk gray that was applied by Kreative Image. This was complemented with Wild Horse fender flares and Hanson front and rear bumpers that provide additional clearance and protection. Attached to the front bumper is a Warn Industries Zeon 8s winch with a Factor 55 fairlead. And Ring Brothers Billet Mirrors were carefully installed to the doors as one last detail. No expense was spared and no stone was left unturned as Wild Horses Billet Headlight Bezels surround the United Pacific LED headlights. Additional lighting is provided by Baja Designs LP6 amber lights and a 10-inch Lazer Lightbar to help provide ample light coverage in the dark. One to be always prepared, Sean opted for a Front Runner Slimline II roof rack topped with a Pelican case for storage and a DMOS shovel. And for recreational use a 1up bike rack was installed on the back to hold his custom RAD Bicycle Company Fat Tire bike. The project was not without any trouble. Much like many restoration builds, there seemed to be endless issues as he encountered problems throughout the process. This led to many sleepless nights for Sean as he worked continuously to make the deadline. .60.

“I encountered every possible issue it seemed like,” he says. “So many sleepless nights and way over budget, but the first time it fired up and I was able to drive it made all those pain points go away.” The hard work and dedication of Sean, along with his team and family, made it possible for the vehicle to debut at 2019 SEMA Show at the last minute. He even installed the front windshield the night before the event from inside the booth. The entire process was a memorable experience and one that he won’t likely forget anytime soon. For now, he looks forward to enjoying the vehicle with his family before finishing another project, a 1980 Dodge D50, which was his grandfather’s daily driver. The Bronco may have been the first of many full restoration builds. “If my wife and budget allow, I’ll start something new this winter,” hints Sean. We hope his wife is on board so we all can experience another one of his masterpieces. You can follow Sean Jennings’s adventures on Instagram @defconbrix.

HILE THE AVAILABLE FACTORY OPTIONS OFFERED WITH MODERN TRUCKS ARE AMAZING (FOR LACK OF A BETTER WORD) SOMETIMES A LITTLE BIT OF BEAUTIFUL SIMPLICITY GETS LOST IN ALL THOSE BELLS AND WHISTLES. A good percentage of “old school” truck fans have assimilated just fine to all the technological upgrades now made available, but there are still some analog, mechanical things that have been lost in translation along the way. One guy who can attest to this sentiment is Adan Ibarra, owner of Leading Edge Collision of Houston, Texas. Something he would like to see more out there is more desirable body options at the dealership these days—namely with General Motors brands. “Have you noticed that GM no longer offers single cab short bed trucks anymore?” he asks. Well, it’s true, and that has been a must-have killer combination throughout the years, and for that option to be off the table in today’s marketplace is a downright shame. So what’s a guy to do about this problem? For Adan, the answer was simple, even though it my sound a bit excessive to others. Either way, you have to respect his eager approach and drive for success. “In July 2020, I bought the collision shop that I managed for 11 years,” he explains. “Yep, in the middle of a pandemic. Am I crazy? I think we all have a little bit of crazy in us from time to time, but my passion has always been custom cars and trucks, and this just felt like the perfect time to build a ‘shop truck’ to showcase that we are much more than just an ordinary collision shop.” Having no other option, Adan went and got himself a brand new 2020 GMC Sierra long bed pickup. He was dead set on transforming it into a short bed in-house by utilizing a factory crew cab bed. Of course, that would snowball into some custom chassis work, so he just decided to go ahead and base a whole restyling project out of the truck, which he looked at as being beneficial personally and business wise.

“I wasn’t going for a full-blown radical build, but I did want something subtle, elegant and sporty that would be appealing to all truck enthusiasts like myself,” he says. In other words, Adan was chasing that “what GM should’ve built” vibe, which is always interesting to see come together. “I reached out to awardwinning rendering artist Eric Brockmeyer to facilitate all the ideas I was envisioning for the project,” he says about the design process. “After a couple renditions, Eric narrowed the visuals
down to the a version that I loved and knew was the right way to go.” The first thing to address was the truck’s ride height and prep work for a shorter bed. Adan wasn’t going with anything too crazy here, as he opted for a tried and true 4/6 drop featuring Belltech lowering components to get the stance he was after as well as solid ride quality. Next, the existing frame was sized up and measured to see just how much would have to be cut to accommodate the shorter crew cab bed. In total, 29 inches would come

out of the factory chassis to be compatible with the new bed. And with the rear drop being so low, the frame would also have to be equipped with a C-notch for ample axle clearance. Other modifications were also made to due to the bed changeup, but Adan and crew didn’t run into any major hurdles they couldn’t jump, and they made sure that 24-inch Lexani wheels and Pirelli rubber could fit perfectly underneath the fender wells. With the suspension and bed conversion labor behind them, Adan then moved onto the much anticipated paint process. He took this opportunity seriously, making the extra effort to take the entire cab and bed apart. He sprayed the cab with LizardSkin insulation to cut down a large amount of road noise. The engine bay was originally painted white, but he sprayed a satin black firewall forward to match all the factory black engine components. Those little touches do go a long way, but the moment to mix the custom PPG Global Silver, Gray and Bronze colors for the exterior paint proved to be the most exciting. From there, everything that was sporting factory chrome was stripped and painted to match. All the factory black texture parts were also smoothed and painted for a slicker appearance. Moving to the interior, Adan lucked out with the seats as they came from the dealership covered in Katzkin leather. To up the ante inside the cab, Cy-Fair Upholstery was recruited to wrap the headliner and
visors in suede, and the utilitarian vinyl flooring was tossed out and replaced with plush carpet for a more welcoming feel. Adan then painted all the interior plastics black to match the truck better. Just like that, this project GMC was completed and ready for the streets. Adan’s Sierra looks very much like a factory concept model. It gets loads of attention, and most onlookers might not even realize just what it is they seeing. This is the truck that didn’t even exist before one guy who wanted to see it happen bad enough, made it happen. Hopefully someone with some pull at GM sees what Adan and his shop have done with one of its crew cab short bed pickups and agrees that the single cab short bed does have a place on the streets (although that’s just wishful thinking). In a world of newfangled this and upgraded that, guys just want to build and drive a truck that looks exactly like the one in his head. Adan has accomplished just that, and has proven that maybe, just maybe, there are still people out there who still buy trucks to customize to their heart’s desire, and not exclusively for hard labor. “This truck has given me an opportunity to remember that if I have to get my hands dirty, I can still throw down,” Adan says about all the hard work that went into building his single cab Sierra vision. “For anyone else out there looking to build something that hasn’t been done yet, don’t give up and do it!”

WE PARTICIPATE IN THE GREAT DEBATE
S
PEAKING BROADLY OVER MANY DIFFERENT INDUSTRIES, HISTORY HAS SHOWN US TIME AND TIME AGAIN THAT WHEN ONE SIMPLE CONCEPT BECOMES A NATIONAL STANDARD FOR BUSINESSES AND CONSUMERS ALL OVER THE WORLD, AN ENTIRE INDUSTRY CAN SURVIVE AND THRIVE ON THE DEMAND. Sports franchises, comic books and even hit songs can spawn small retail businesses and even product manufacturing, all based around the original concept. Over the last five to 10 years, we’ve seen that exact algorithm play out in the vehicle wrap industry. At its inception, only a handful of products in a limited color supply were available to the general public. Knowledge was hard to come by, and tools were being made in garages or on shop benches to help with certain details. Fast forward a few years, and now you can’t drive to your local high school without seeing at least a few wrapped cars along the way. Most of them will be basic blue-collar business wraps, although occasionally you’ll see a solid color wrapped sports car of some sort. The times are changing more quickly than we expected, but we’ve been following the trend since the beginning. Some of the original push-back arguments for wrapping a custom truck were the same standard questions the industry still gets asked daily: “If it cost the same as paint, why would I wrap it?” or “Can I design my own wrap?”. Lots of questions and misconceptions fill the wrap world with negative energy, but after spending a week with some of the top guys in the game, I feel comfortable with presenting this process to our very trusting readers. There are a few benefits we would not have considered if we didn’t do some research, so we implore you to sit back, relax and follow along with an open mind. No matter how pro-paint you think you are, I bet you may be a little more open by the end of the story. We Print Wraps was created from their love for vehicle wraps. This team has an intense desire to see the vinyl car wrap industry grow. With a combined 20 years in the car wrap printing and installation industry, they started offering wholesale car wrap printing to local vehicle wrap installers. It helped WPW grow their business and expand their client base. By taking this nationwide, the We Print Wraps team is helping expand the vinyl car wrapping industry one wrap at a time!
Step two is to work with your designer on a concept and color scheme. They will ask you all the right questions over the phone or email and tell you exactly what they could use to make the process go as smoothly as possible. I’m sure some of you guys can tackle the design on your computer at home. Well, we can’t, so WPW suggested a great local designer they have worked with in the past. Although If you can design your own wrap, We Print Wraps will print and ship it to you with no additional steps needed before install. Our recommended designer has an acronym for a name, and GLARB won’t let us know what it stands for. But after checking out Ryan Sandoval’s IG page @ Glarb_Wrapped, we were more than impressed and excited to get going!
04
The design process is usually a twoweek-long, new girlfriend style relationship with your designer. Lots of texts and emails go back and forth and smiles from ear to ear as the design evolves. First, we sent our stock truck photos from when we bought it and the render idea we originally came up with.
05
We explained the concept behind the design and some inspiration for the layout. A combination of Ready Player One and CyberPunk is the direction we pointed Ryan and, as you should with any great designer, we gave him total freedom and let him loose with no supervision. STREETTRUCKSMAG.COM | JUNE 2021
.71.
TECH | WHY WRAP?
06
GLARB sent us a basic framework for the layout followed by additional rendered styles that included texture and color.
07
With an approval on our end and some optional additional detail suggestions, we sat and waited for a full rendering of the entire truck completely wrapped.
08
The first set of renderings had a few different color options to choose from. We can add, edit or change our layout until we are completely happy. The longer it takes, the more it costs, though up to this point not much money has switched accounts.
09
With the design complete and your designer paid in full, your files will be ready and waiting in your inbox until a few more paychecks hit the bank. Once that time comes, all you have to do is forward the email from your designer straight to We Print Wraps so they can add it to their production schedule.
10
Step four is a simple search on Wrapper Mapper for contact information to a local independent installer. Based on the complexity of your design, the install can range anywhere from $800 to $1,800 and can be done in around one week. A large network of mobile installers and install facilities is available. Generally, this can be done right in your garage if there’s not a lot of dust and debris, but if your local installer has his own shop, that’s even better.
.72.

11
Because our design is so complex and covers the entire truck, we used Ryan’s personal suggestion for the install team to make sure his concepts came out correctly. Tate Design is known as one of the leading wrap installers in the country. It’s an amazing process, and we will go over the entire timeline in the next issue and unveil the final look, so stay tuned!

With the truck in the shop, Tate and the crew instantly got to work disassembling the truck and mentally creating a game plan. Everything needed to come off including the grille, door handles, lights and emblems.
13
Tate Design will even wrap the factory bumpers, so it’s a good thing GLARB designed the wrap to cover everything!
15
14
To ensure the wrap sticks for good and no lifting or heavy divots are shown, Ryan and Tate brought the truck outside and got to work sanding and smoothing the body of the truck. The wrap will cover a lot of imperfections, but these guys are perfectionists, so they took the time to prep it properly.
The impressive wrap material can transition from a smooth painted surface to a smooth sanded surface with no adhesion issues. Naturally, if your paint if close to perfect, you don’t need much more that a quick bath before the wrap can start.
16
Speaking of baths, Artemis gets one last bath in her original exterior color before heading in the bay.
17
Now that she is inside, the masterminds get to work. This is where things get technical, and experience with installing these kinds of wraps isn’t something most installers have in their wheelhouse.

We Print Wraps offers many different options for your wrap finish. You can choose to print on high-gloss, semi-gloss, satin, matte and even super matte, depending on the finish you’re looking to have on your vehicle. We went with satin on our wrap since we wanted the Cyber Punk/ Ready Player One grunge look. Once all the printing is complete, WPW will pack it up very professionally and ship it directly to your house. You can store this inside an air-conditioned environment while you pile up a few more paychecks for the installation.
19
Ryan had one trick up his sleeve, and we were blown away when he explained how this bioluminescent panel will sit behind the wrap in certain locations, lighting up with the push of a button. So exciting!

The method to the madness is something we didn’t quite pick up on, but we can appreciate all the calculations going on in Ryan and Tate’s heads during the install.

HEY SAY THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS. Well, if that’s the case, then allow us to introduce you to Satan himself—well, in truck form. Rich Grubert has painstakingly made every effort to make his ’59 Chevy Apache unlike any other you’ve seen before, and to do that, he’s elevated what’s to be expected from a custom classic truck. There is a lot hiding beneath the surface here, and the deeper you look, you’re guaranteed not to see it all at first, second or even sixth glance. Being a ritualistic huntsman by nature, Rich is quite fond of scouring the outlying realms beyond for perfectly sun scorched truck parts needed to get his current project closer to finished. “From junkyards to backyards, there was not a location that we did not pursue in search of the patina paradise,” he says. “The journey did finally end though after two years of stumbling upon what would be soon be transformed into my X-Rated Apache.” While Rich locked down the truck and all the panels he’d need to bolt a complete pickup together, it would be another two years down the line before anything really got cooking. “I was waiting for the ever-elusive ideas/concepts to surface before making any big moves,” he admits. “In that time, however, I reached out to my partners Driven Speed Shop and Phoenix Hot Rod Company to start developing what it is we could make out of this thing.” While the creative juices were left to boil, a full .80.

custom rolling chassis from TCI was ordered to serve as a solid foundation for the Apache. The IFS and rear four-link would deliver top shelf ride quality, and the full Accuair e-Level system that Rich decided on would ensure the perfect ride height for every occasion. To top off the chassis just right, 20-inch Detroit Steel Wheels were chosen, then painted to blend in with the natural patina that would be showcased on the truck’s exterior. “‘One-off’ was our mantra for this truck,” Rich says. “There was very little, if anything, that I wanted to be ordinary here, and every idea received the examination it deserved amongst our group.” While in close communication with the team at Phoenix Hot Rod Company, the concept of Japanese architecture became a guide for the visual inspiration for the metalwork that would go into the dash, firewall and bed. Different iterations of patchwork copper designs were thrown around until a particular overlay pattern became everyone’s favorite. “It just looked aggressive and had an undeniable a flair of pure art,” Rich says. The X-Rated name just kind of evolved as the truck began to take its unique shape. “With a name like that, it required us to design a bed to be just as fantASStic,” Rich says with pride. “The exhaust was shaped in sensual patterns up and over the notch that fit like a velvet glove. With the touch of a button, the bed opens via remote which slowly initiates the screw-drive that elevates the experienced ‘mushroom’ barn wood bed floor.” To take things off into another dimension, the fender wells were stretched just enough to make room for what Rich refers to as the nightcap compartments. These tucked away pockets allow for 10 cold beers to be stashed on each side—now is that diabolically genius or what? Back inside the cab, Rich turned to The Jalopy Shop to create a Tiffany Blue colored leather bench seat with a diamond stitch pattern STREETTRUCKSMAG.COM | JUNE 2021

that looks so elegantly sinister. When the time came to picking the right steering wheel, the process proved to be a tougher decision to make than originally thought. “We went in circles narrowing it down to just one, but we went on to source/restore a ’59 Edsel Tele-Touch steering wheel so we could repurpose the buttons to activate headlights, dome lights, hazards, etc., instead of their original purpose of shifting the transmission.” Now, remember that killer dash mentioned before? Well, of course the guys weren’t ready to quit while they were ahead—they pushed on for yet another W. A bunch of century-old Indian head pennies were collected and added not only for decoration, but also to function as buttons to operate the ignition, climate controls and the like. And to combat the lullaby sounds coming from the exhaust system, JL Audio 6x9s were concealed under the dash, and a Thin-Line 10-inch sub and Bluetooth amp were placed behind the sofa. When it’s just as fun to sit in the cab than it is to look at the rest of the truck, you know you’ve done it up right. There’s a motor under the hood, we promise, but that’s not where your eyes will naturally gravitate. You’ll be more attracted to the copper paneling that ties in with the dash. There’s just something about what the guys did with this design that’s so mesmerizing. But in case you’re interested in the specs of the engine, just know that Driven Speed Shop took very good care of it. “They have proven themselves to be where to go for help with a forced induction LS transplants,” Rich says. “The heartbeat is monitored by Holley, the oxygen is provided by a 68 mm Garret turbo, and the flow is managed by Turbosmart’s BOV, EBoost2 .82.

digital controller and wastegate. Mikey of Driven then prescribed liberal programming to allow the engine to not only breathe, but to also work in harmony with the Hughes transmission and converter by using RPMs, speed and boost level to direct it when to shift.” When it comes to building a truck like Mr. Rich Grubert’s X-Rated Apache, patience and staying true to your own style remain to be the keys to success. “Think freely, and don’t let others street you away from the ideas and concepts you develop and genuinely like,” Rich encourages us all to do. “Just like Big Daddy Kane, there ‘Ain’t Half Steppin’ when it comes to building the true custom vehicle of your dreams. NE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS YOU CAN HOLD ONTO ARE FRIENDSHIPS. Friendships help you build character, define who you are and help you along the way through trials and tribulations. Those friendships often influence your hobbies and interests as you learn about new things and cultures. Since their time in middle school, Robert Walden and his friend Kyle Boring have been close. Although they had different lives and interests, they remained very close. Kyle got involved in the truck lifestyle and Robert began a career in the pharmacy industry. Oftentimes, Robert would see the trucks Kyle was around and absolutely loved the style and look of them. Kyle was building a 1994 Chevy C1500 and had just added a bodydrop but got distracted by some other projects and set it aside. For about a full year, Robert would ask if he could purchase the Chevy before Kyle finally agreed. Robert had never owned any custom vehicle so Kyle was hesitant at first but figured he would lend a hand.

Robert brought the truck home in pieces—a rolling frame, a cab and lots of other small parts. The frame was painted a bright red, and then tires and wheels with the ’bags were installed. Robert’s friend Wesley Copeland helped add the cab to the frame even though there was no wiring or glass yet. Robert’s brother Joshua has a background in bodywork, so he handled all the body smoothing and shaved the doors, gas tank lid, drip rails, third brake light, tailgate handle and antenna. The interior was half done, with Kyle trying to use a ’59 Impala dashboard inside. It wasn’t fitting properly, so Wesley and Joshua stretched it 2 inches on each side, making it fit into place. The body was a light gray primer and the frame was bright red, so Joshua coated
the entire Chevy truck in a bright red mix that matched the frame. The next step was making sure the Chevy would be a solid driver, so an LS6 was pulled from a ’04 Silverado and fit into the engine bay. The new intake wouldn’t clear the hood, so he had to use ZO6 injectors and the hood finally closed. Wesley had to install a custom-built wiring harness from Hotwire to match the right length. After that was wired up, Oilmasters in Tifton, Georgia, built a 3-inch exhaust with true dual

getting the black carpet mounted along with the door panels and new poppers for the doors. Robert called in about five friends to get the bed back on the truck and lined up. Kyle and his crew at his business, Boring’s Glass Company, got all the glass installed and road ready. Robert continued to add final touches with a new center console to fill between the seats. Robert added a box behind the seats to house the battery for the Chevy. Since his purchase of the rolling chassis, Robert has about 3,000 miles on the Chevy C1500 traveling to shows and events all throughout the country. He owes
his dedication and passion to his loyal wife Jessie, who insisted he finish the build no matter how long it took. Robert was able to make Door Dragger a huge success with the helping hands of all his close friends and brother. His lifelong friendship with his middle school buddy Kyle led Robert to purchase and help build his very first truck.
MINI-TRUCKS ONLY NW CRUISE TO THE PINES 2020

WORDS AND PHOTOS BY AUTONERD MEDIA
FTER THE INFAMOUS CAR SHOW RELAXIN IN THE NW WAS CANCELED IN 2020, MINI-TRUCKERS WERE WORRIED ABOUT WHAT WOULD HAPPEN WITH NW CRUISE TO THE PINES PRESENTED BY AIR LIFT PERFORMANCE. Rest assured, the cruise and the show were a go!
Last August, more than 100 custom vehicles from the Northwest area came out to Washington to enjoy some freedom after dealing with the pandemic. About 120 miles of beautiful PNW air, rides as low as they can go, people watching from the street as we rolled through the small towns and took over the rest areas—it was amazing to get the camera out after months of no adventures! After the cruise, everyone rolled back to the private showground in Arlington Heights. The best part of this long cruise is coming back to Veronica’s homemade food and the custom-made skate decks to be awarded. As every year, the designs never disappoint. Local artist and painter Shaun Fedei donated three custom decks, another three decks were created by a very talented 14-year-old future mini-trucker, and the other decks were contributed by artists from around the country. .92.

Beautiful property, private lake, campfires and tales. Compared to CTTP in Arizona, a show at this pace feels more intimate. It has become a quality foundation for the cruise. CRUISE TO THE PINES NW CTTP HISTORY For those who don’t know, here’s a little history about how the NW Cruise to the Pines evolved. In 1993, Sittin Pretti Car Club hosted its annual car show. For years the car show became a part of Perfect Poise Car Club’s annual vacation to Washington. After 20 years, the show came to an end in 2013. “When they announced they were no longer going to host the show, we felt it was time to slowly introduce Washington to a little bit of what we do in Arizona,” said John Trevino, president of Perfect Poise Car Club, in his interview with Street Trucks in 2018. So, the very next year, that is exactly what they did. NW Cruise to the Pines was created and on its first roll through Washington. X

STYLE, COMFORT AND MUSCLE… YOU CAN HAVE IT ALL!
I
N THE ENTERTAINMENT WORLD, A “TRIPLE THREAT” IS SOMEONE WHO CAN SING, DANCE AND ACT. It’s serious competition when you’re toe-to-toe with a triple threat at an audition. In our world, a triple threat would be a truck that goes like hell, is comfortable to drive, and with a killer stance and looks! Gary Faust has this goal with his 1983 C10 truck, which up until now has had two out of three boxes ticked off on a good day. Gary wants it all, which is entirely possible with today’s aftermarket products and platforms as versatile as a C10, but some strategy is involved. GM made the small block Chevy engine from 1954 through 2003, and it revolutionized the automobile industry with the potential for performance upgrades. The introduction of the LS series of engines in 1997 showed great evolution in engine technology and expanded the performance aftermarket, so much so that the LS swap is very common, and for good reason. Gary Faust had a sweetheart of a Squarebody that his family fell in

love with, and it was something he could spend time fixing up and enjoying. He bought it with the ’87 grille installed and the ZZ3 crate engine already broken in. As typically happens, Gary got used to the power levels, needed more, and went down the road of researching a typical LS swap. Gary’s a handy guy, and after serving as a combat medic in the Army, he traveled down a respectable automotive career path as a mechanic and is currently an electronic diagnostic technician repairing vehicle guidance systems. His love of high horsepower has produced several projects, including an OBS project, a badass Jeep JK and a G8GT that he built to well over 500 hp at the wheels with a string of upgrades including a centrifugal
supercharger that was a blast to drive! Gary’s holdback on LS swapping this truck was the ridiculously low (less than 5,000) mileage on the ZZ3 crate engine with forged bottom and bulletproof internals, in front of a beefed up 4L60E transmission feeding a new LSD and 3:42 gears in a 10 bolt 8.5-inch rear diff. A decent foundation for sure! Gary, being no stranger to forced induction, decided a blower was a “must-have” and started his research. TorqStorm Billet Superchargers has a fast-growing reputation for making great performing and reliable hardware with several different applications, including traditional small-block engines. After a few phone calls and some web-surfing, Gary settled on the TorqStorm SBC centrifugal blower system designed for 40-50% power gains, which (on paper) should net him about 500 to the tires—with air conditioning to boot! Yes, please!! Randomly throwing a ton of air and fuel and an unprepared engine may be fun on a bonsai-web-car show, but Gary wanted to do things in the right order and the right way, thinking and planning his way through the process of creating a powerful and comfortable classic truck that will give years of reliable performance with room for improvements! We’re going to follow the process of solidifying the foundation of this truck, making it robust enough to withstand the demands of forced induction and reliable enough for
TECH | TRIPLE THREAT his family and the occasional cruise to a cars-n-coffee or even an occasional jaunt down the 1350. Addressing all the vehicle systems began with Gary knowing the limitations of the existing drivetrain and improving components one by one until the pyramid was right side up. This starts with a cooling system upgrade from Cold Case Radiators, a new Vintage Air HVAC package that we’ll show you in part 2 of this series, new fuel delivery and
Sniper TB/EFI from Holley Performance to accommodate blow-through requirements, and a free-flowing exhaust system from Flowmaster and Flowtech to get rid of the spent gasses and sound great to boot. An added bonus that has nothing to do with power is a TMI dash pad replacing the cracked and poorly repaired stock dash, which is typical in these trucks. (Hey, we all want it to look good too!) Then we’ll shake down
and baseline the N/A package before we install the TorqStorm blower to get a before and after comparison, as well as realize the true potential of the combination of all the upgraded components. No, the world doesn’t need another LS swap… Yes, Gary is absolutely correct in building up the cool factor of an already proven platform of the venerable GM small block and making it current and a lot more potent!
COOLING
01
Removing the hood lets a lot more light into the engine bay and allows different angles of attack on multiple projects. Corey Schuette works alongside Gary and is a diagnostic electronics support expert. Cory knows his way around all things automotive and helped us make good time on all of these projects.
03
Teardown is fun, but reassembly can be a pain if you’re not organized. Gary’s military training kicks in with bagged and labeled parts!
02
We drained the coolant, disconnected the battery, and pulled the tired stock rad from behind the shroud and fan, which saves having to reach in blindly and awkwardly wrenching off the fan.
04
The OE fan shroud won’t be needed and needs to be removed to clear the TorqStorm blower setup.
05
We’re using Cold Case Radiators’ 21-inch C10 radiator (Part #GMT556A21) with dual electric fan setup as well as its fan controller kit. This system will offer excellent engine cooling with an oversized two-row system, which is much more efficient than a traditional four-row.

A quick test-fit of the new core tells us that the original rubber isolators will work, as will the upper holding clamps.
The dual 12-inch fans can be mounted with provided self-drilling screws or by drilling for the provided rivets for a cleaner look. The total thickness of the radiator and fan will leave plenty of room for the new accessory drive.
Gary replaces the stock clamps on the new radiator and clamps things in place behind the Vintage air condenser. (Part 2 of this series.)
09
Cold Case provides part numbers for the larger (4x4) hose set to accommodate the extra airflow of the 1.75-inch ports and will be selling its own custom hoses by the time this article hits the stands.

FUEL
11
Holley, anticipating the popularity of these trucks and EFI and LS swaps, offers a complete replacement fuel system with a choice of either in-tank or external fuel delivery. Gary chose the Sniper EFI tank (Part #29-156). The tank itself is powdercoated for durability and comes with a 255 LPH internal pump, sender, straps, gaskets and clamps to install in an ’82-’87 C10 truck. If Gary was staying N/A, this pump serves up to 550 hp and would offer plenty of fuel. However, with the upcoming TorqStorm blower, numbers will be closer to 650 flywheel, so Gary called Ethan at Holley Tech Support, who recommended a 340 LPH pump upgrade (Part #19-342) that will support 700 hp.
12
13
14
15
The original tank is unbolted and discarded, but the mounting straps will be cleaned up and reused.
Gary carefully measured, installed and clamped the new pump in place (complete with dirt sock) before installing into the new tank body.
The larger capacity 340 LPH pump is the same physical size and replaces the 255 LPH pump that comes in the Sniper kit.
Provided hardware secures both the pump hat and the fuel level sending unit.

SNIPER Removing the 20 Holley 600 CFM carb is simple. Reselling it in horse-trades, swap meets or internet auctions will help buy back some of the parts costs.
21
The TorqStorm charger needs a blowthrough setup for induction. Gary had a choice to make: either purchase a blow-through carb or convert to a TBI setup that can adapt to forced induction. There’s quite a difference in cost between the two, but the TBI setup will yield much better driveability, has self-learning capabilities and can be converted back to N/A status easily. Besides, the ability to tune air and fuel precisely at boost can make the difference between along engine life and broken parts. Research led us to the Holley Super-Sniper 550-519 4 injector kit, which comes complete with the throttle body unit, ECU, wiring, sensors and handheld controller. Gary had the option of shiny, black or gold colors; he opted for black. The Sniper EFI comes with everything needed to install, including a manual. Sniper comes with all necessary sensors, including coolant temp and “no-weld” 02 exhaust sensor and bung.
25
Delivery and return fuel lines are routed up the rear of the bellhousing and to the Sniper EFI body. For N/A application, the Sniper is internally regulated. We’ll add an external regulator for the boosted application in Part 2 of this series.
26
Gary pulled 12v key-on power from the pink ignition wire for the Sniper and connected the main power and ground directly to the battery. Trans and fan controllers go to an auxiliary fuse box.

Once plumbed and connected, we can fire the truck, which lit immediately. The setup menu is straightforward and walks you through all the setup prompts.

We used Redline 50/50 with water wetter in the new Cold Case radiator to make sure we keep cool on the initial startup.
The Sniper doesn’t start “learning” until it hits 160 degrees, so some idle time is necessary to reach operating temps. Once it’s warmed up and in a closed loop mode, Gary will put a few hundred miles on it, check for leaks and make sure everything is happy.

The restrictive factory manifolds were destined for the heap, regardless of the plan, but certainly need to be replaced with a forced induction upgrade.

Ceramic-coated Flowtech long tube 1 5/8 headers with thick flanges will ridiculously outflow the OE manifolds and are budget friendly, relatively speaking.
The OE 1 ¾ pipe and ancient Flowmaster mufflers get cut out and reclaimed by nature.
With aluminum heads, all header bolts get anti-seize! Any dissimilar metal fastener, regardless of the component, should get anti-seize lubricant.
34
Installation is drama-free and looks great! No adjustments needed and all fasteners and gaskets went in with fingertip pressure.

Flowmaster offers many options for many vehicles. We opted for its Universal 2.5-inch stainless and mandrel-bent exhaust, with some Flowmaster Super 44s thrown in. There’s plenty of choices for routing, as well as straight and V-shaped crossover tubes.
36
37
38
The crossover tube was mounted under the transmission mount, which is a good transition point where exhaust pulses are starting to lose some velocity. A 1.25-inch hole saw makes a clean opening on each side.
After installing a tubular transmission mount that will allow for symmetrical exhaust pipes, Gary and Cory built the exhaust from the collectors back, tacking sections together as they went.
The Sniper ECU only needs one 02 sensor. Ours is going in the driver side just behind the collector using a step drill is used to create the location. It’s important not to place your sensor at the bottom where moisture or fuel could potentially accumulate.

Holley provides a gasket and clamp-on bung for installation, or you could opt to weld in a bung.

TECH | TRIPLE THREAT
DYNO & BASELINE RIGHT. On paper, this engine was 41 advertised at 345 hp/387 tq. Not too shabby for a daily driven street truck, and a solid foundation for power adders. Subtract 20% for driveline losses, and it should make right around 275 RWHP. We can add back a little for the 1 5/8 LT headers and eliminate the mechanical fan, but that’s our target for the day. This initial session is not about tuning. It’s to establish a solid baseline for comparison moving forward. Whatever we get at the wheels, a dyno session is always a good idea to test limits and levels on a drivetrain rather than public roads, so we headed to DBR High Performance in Spring Hill, Tennessee. David Branson has more than proved himself over the years, tuning and assisting with many of my personal builds, countless TV projects and potent Drag Week with TM vehicles, trophy trucks and road race cars. Our Holley Sniper X is settled and happy with a few hundred miles of commuting on the new cooling and exhaust systems, so we picked a cool morning to get our baseline numbers before the TorqStorm power adder gets installed. DBR has a state-of-the-art eddy current hub-dyno, which ensures no slippage and complete accuracy. Chris connects both hubs and triple checks the installation.
42
Gary connects his TCI controller to lock the converter and gear selection.
43
David Branson fills in the info for the computer before an initial pull. Remember, we’re not tuning here. This is to establish a baseline only for comparison.
44
45
Since Gary drove his truck to DBR, it’s warm and ready to make a pull—60-degree ambient air temperatures are not a bad thing!
46
The first tug nets almost 280 hp and 319 lb-ft.
47
After a 2-minute cool-down, David does another pull and nets less HP and TQ but justifies it with higher IAT’s and general heatsoak effect.
.112.
JUNE 2021 | STREETTRUCKSMAG.COM
With the 4160 locked in at 3rd gear, wheel speed gets well over 120 mph. Driveline components are tested here! It’s better to break on the dyno than out on the street.
48
Averaged out, our truck made 269.35 hp and 313.5 lb-ft. Gary is very happy with those numbers, which are actually higher than advertised power from this engine. This can be attributed to a much better exhaust, less drag on the engine with an electric fan and the computer controlled EFI system maximizing efficiency. Gary says the truck never felt so good, and there’s an amazing before and after effect from these upgrades, but there’s more on the table! TorqStorm advertises a 50% gain with 8 pounds of boost on its single charger kit, but Gary’s hope is to see 500 hp to the tires, and no loss of driveability or comfort. Watch for Part 2 of this story to see if we meet that goal!!

TRUCKS BATTLE IT OUT AT ORANGE BEACH INVASION
ELEBRATING ITS FIFTH YEAR, ORANGE BEACH INVASION 2021 WAS STACKED WITH LIFTED AND LOWERED TRUCKS, UNDER-CONSTRUCTION AND FULLY FINISHED BUILDS, AND EVEN A FEW OF THOSE WEIRD LOOKING “LEAN” TRUCKS. All types of vehicles are
welcome to this yearly show-andshine event, which is what makes Orange Beach Invasion such a great show. More than 900 vehicles filled the grounds of The Wharf in Orange Beach, Alabama, and an additional few thousand spectators hit the venue street and shops to stimulate the local economy by supporting the businesses at The Wharf. It’s so nice to give back!

WORDS BY CHRIS HAMILTON PHOTOS BY LOGAN WADE
Tons of vendors came out to support the show as well. From custom wheels to temporary tattoos and even a Ferris wheel for the kids, you could find it in Orange Beach. As the sun began to set on Saturday, everyone knew what was coming next: the light show! The palm trees around the event were lit up and danced to the music being pumped around the town. That’s when vehicles up and down the strip started flipping on their LED underglow lights to show off their ride at night. This is also when the Ferris wheel starts buzzing with business as everyone rushes to get in line to see the show from the sky. After a fun-filled evening, Sunday was another beautiful day at The Wharf. Although it was the last day of the event, everyone poured back into the show grounds for another busy day. In the afternoon, awards were presented to some of the top builds in attendance. Plans have already begun to make 2022’s event even bigger and better! Dates have not been released as of yet but be on the lookout! Orange Beach Invasion is definitely a show you don’t want to miss!
