Doing up my daughter’s bedroom (AKA the longest makeover in history) has reminded me that my own bedroom redo (my 12th birthday present!) kickstarted my love of interiors. The scheme was designed around a new duvet cover, my mum recovered an old sofa to match and I delighted in picking out accessories in The Pier. Fast-forward a few years and I put just as much effort into styling up my student room at uni, curating gallery walls and zoning the (tiny) space. Back then, I had no idea that I could turn what I enjoyed so much into a career, but looking back it makes perfect sense. Decorating my home brings me just as much joy today, and I’m guessing if you’re reading Style at Home, you’re a kindred spirit. Hello there, fellow home lovers, welcome to our happy place! ABOUT ME I’m Georgia Broome, 40, a PR consultant and upcycling blogger at homemadeproductions. co.uk. I live here with my husband James, 41, a software developer, and our daughters Olivia, nine, and Charlotte, seven. MY HOME A three-bedroom 1950s semi-detached house in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, bought in April 2016. WHEN WE MOVED IN It felt cold and run-down and the layout didn’t make sense. The extension was poorly built and the loft conversion wasn’t up to building regulations. AND NOW We moved most of the walls and the space flows perfectly. It feels warm, our bills are low and our things have a new lease of life. STYLE TIP Form a neutral backdrop to the schemes then add colour with furniture and furnishings. 18 | JULY 2021

a TIGHT BUDGET’ IDEA TO STEAL

‘Turn a simple bulb pendant into a feature by teaming it with a long flex’

Georgia Broome totally reworked an unwanted house, making it energy efficient and filling rooms with her upcycledcreations

T

his is the first family home that we’ve owned,’ says Georgia, ‘as beforehand we lived in Toronto and Dubai for James’ work, and we had rented. As our eldest daughter approached school age, we decided to return to the UK and settled on Oxfordshire. We found a place to rent near Abingdon and began looking for a house to buy. I was craving somewhere we could renovate and make our own. I wasn’t interested in this house at first because it had been empty for two years, and in the photos it looked awful. But after having offers refused on seven houses, I began to get desperate, and this was literally the last one on our list. As soon as I walked through the door and saw the gorgeous original 1950s parquet floor, I fell in love.

Changing the layout The house had a lot of space but the

layout didn’t work for us – for instance, you had to walk through the living room to reach the kitchen. Before we made an offer, I redrew the floorplan using an online drawing tool. I was able to rub out the lines that marked the walls and identify what couldn’t easily be moved, such as the stairs, load-bearing walls and chimney breasts. Then I redrew a different layout to see if we could fit in all the rooms that suited our family. Our decisions, including a utility room, mud room and playroom, were influenced by how we’d lived in previous homes – in Dubai because it’s so hot outside, and in Toronto because it’s so cold in winter. We decided to convert the front half of the garage into a porch and the back half into the loo and utility; the playroom connects with the kitchen-diner. The living room is now separate from the JULY 2021 | 19

yarn from Wool and the Gang in a colour that matches your scheme. Cut eight lengths, around 2m each. Knot all the lengths together, leaving space below the big knot for the tassel. Separate the lengths into pairs. Knot each pair about 2.5cm from the big knot; pull the knots tight. Tape the four sections in a cross over the bottom a plant pot, with the main knot in the middle. Take two neighbouring single lengths and knot them together. Continue until you reach the edge of the pot. Remove the tape. Securely screw a hook into the ceiling. Hang your potted plant. 20 | JULY 2021

‘We sanded and varnished the 1950s parquet wood floor and teamed it with concrete-effect tiles – it makes a great style statement’

RED ZONE

‘The red colourblocking, which includes the piano, complements the wood parquet and introduces warmth’

FRESHEN UP

‘White Ikea wall units, worktop and tiles reflect light. Copper is naturally antibacterial, so it’s ideal for the sink and handles’

‘COLOUR-BLOCKING ACROSS WALLS, THE PIANO AND SIDEBOARD HAS A CAMOUFLAGING EFFECT TO PARE BACK LARGE PIECES IN SMALLER ROOMS’ kitchen-diner at the back, because we’d lived in one huge open-plan space in Dubai and it had been too noisy. Upstairs, knocking through the loo and bathroom made our en suite, and we created a new family bathroom from the guest en suite. Updating the loft to meet building regulations gave James his office space.

Energy-efficientliving A high priority was to make our home

energy efficient with a smart meter, new combi-boiler, radiators with thermostats, and A+ rated appliances. I sourced triple-glazed windows, doors and ‘super’ insulation for the loft. We laid Superfoil’s

40mm insulation mat over the top of the rafters to keep the head height in the room. It’s really effective as the house is cool in summer and warm in winter, but it took a chunk of our budget – all the roof tiles had to be removed and re-laid, plus we needed scaffolding.

Keeping costs down It was really important to us from an

ethical point of view that we recycled and reused as much as we could during the build, which also saved us money. I reduced skip hire costs by climbing into the skip every day and pulling out leftover pieces of plasterboard to reuse in the eaves of the loft. I distributed JULY 2021 | 21

IDEA TO STEAL

‘Search eBay for bargain buys like this £8 light shade’

‘BE CREATIVE AND FIND WAYS TO REUSE OR UPCYCLE HA AS YOU END UP WITPIECE E UNIQU ’ COMPLETELY waste wood to neighbours who had woodburners. I made the budget stretch by sourcing all the trades and managing them on a day rate – with strict instructions to protect the parquet floor while they were at work! The biggest challenge was teaching myself how to draw plans for the electrics, and finding a tiler capable of blending the new kitchen floor tiles with the original dining room parquet – so many said that it couldn’t be done.

Dealing with disaster We hit a wall just as our rental contract

came to an end. We thought the house would be habitable enough to move into – but the loft stairs hadn’t been fitted, there was carpentry to be done, the electrics and plumbing weren’t 22 | JULY 2021

It was awful and we frantically searched for replacements and somewhere else to live. Fortunately, my aunt knew a builder delayed on another project who could start straight away and we got the house finished a few months later.

Recycling and upcycling Most of our belongings came with us and I like that they tell a story – a framed London bus blind notes the routes we used to travel to work, and the old French school posters remind me of my

childhood in France. The dining table and bed came from Dubai and we brought the Ikea sofa back from Toronto. The rest is mainly pre-owned furniture from charity shops and eBay, which I upcycled. I love the patina and heritage of these old pieces, and it’s a green and sustainable way to shop. I also sourced end-of-line tiles, and used the Minerva kitchen worktop offcuts for the pantry shelves and a small tabletop. After decorating all the rooms in my favourite beige and grey duo, which I’d tried and tested in previous homes,

ABOUT ME I’m Rachel Black, 31, a nurse (@thegirlwiththepantryladder) and seller on Etsy (Vinnyandflo). WHEN WE MOVED IN Parts of the house were not habitable. We had no heating, so the challenge was to get the house water and wind-tight and warm as soon as possible. The house was a blank canvas which hadn’t been lived in for more than 10 years. The main living room was very dark and I knew that knocking through to bring in more light was key to our renovation.

Cautious planning We moved just two days before Christmas 2016. We decided to live in the house for six months before making any changes, and I’m glad we did, because I had a totally different vision initially than what we ended up with. However, it was a very cold Christmas! The fireplace was condemned and we slept on an airbed in the living room thinking, what have we done? Thank God it’s a distant memory now. Living in the existing space made us realise that the lean-to would definitely work as bedrooms, leaving the main house to be an open-plan space. The back of the house had the best views so it made more sense putting the kitchen there and it would cost us less money in structural works. I wanted to retain as much character as possible by keeping the stone walls and wooden beams.

Starting point The first big project was to knock down the old lean-to extension and rebuild it

SWAPPING ROOMS AROUND – WE DID AND ‘CONSIBYDER MAKING THIS SPACE THE KITCHEN IT’S BROUGHT IN MORE LIGHT AND OPENED UP THE VIEWS’ to create the bedrooms. It was originally one big room with windows all round and a leaking, droopy plastic roof. It had been very poorly built, and we had all sorts of birds and frogs coming into the house all the time. Eventually it would be a place that we could escape to while the rest of the house was getting done. We were quite fortunate not to have any problems with planning because the lean-to had been there for more than 10 years. The original builder built it smaller than what was actually permitted, so we were able to go bigger, which was a nice bonus.

ABuilding goodworkteam started in January 2018

and there was no access to our house for a couple of months because of bad weather, so it was open to the snow and rain for a while which was worrying. But once we got started our builder was full of good advice. He explained what size windows and doors we should get, what style would work best, and where to have the doors opening. We were going to install more windows, but he reminded us to consider what the house would look like externally and to think about its symmetry. It was

Change of plan We were expecting our daughter Beitidh

in October 2019 so that really made us focus and get as much of the rest of the house sorted as possible. Before going for an open-plan design we thought about incorporating roof lights to make the living room brighter. In the end that would have taken away a lot of the character, which is why we decided to knock the wall down between the living area, so what had been a bedroom is now the kitchen, and has created a brighter space.

Light time Before we had the rewiring done, there

were only three lights in total in the whole of the main house. We hadn’t been expecting that rewiring would cause quite so much mess, even though we had been warned. One day I came home from work and found the kitchen on the grass outside because the electrician needed access to the walls! We had to eat in our bedroom and we couldn’t go anywhere JULY 2021 | 37

ATheremodel old kitchen was at the front of the

house, which is now the boot room. Changing the use was essential given our rural location. This rejig allowed us to create the open-plan space by knocking down a wall in the main part of the house and as part of this we installed two new doors where windows used to be, and a brand new window, which really makes the most of our views out towards Hadrian’s Wall. The kitchen is a result of me trying to do a cheaper version of a deVOL kitchen. We didn’t have much storage space so I wanted the cupboards to go right up to the ceiling and use as much available room as possible. DIY Kitchens were recommended to us, and they were really good. three-step task. Firstly, prepare the area. Clear the decking and give the whole area a good sweep, then wash the surface with a mixture of sugar soap and water. If you like, you can lay a sheet down – try Harris’s Seriously Good Tarpaulin – to protect your lawn or paving from paint drips. Next, it’s time to paint the edges. Start with the far edges of the decking – Harris’s Seriously Good 2 Inch Shed & Fence Brush is ideal as it will give you really neat lines. The bristles will also get into those hard-to-reach nooks – left untreated, they are more prone to moisture and rot. Finally, you can now paint the rest. Working from the furthest spot from your house inwards, use Harris’s Ultimate Swan Neck Shed & Fence Brush to paint the boards. Demolition plans We tackled the inside first, demolishing

most of the ground floor walls on one side of the house, knocking through the kitchen, dining room and utility room to create a big open-plan family living area, which we then zoned with careful placement of lighting, furniture and rugs into a kitchen, lounge area and dining space. We love to entertain and wanted to be able to chat with our friends and family while we cooked. It is my favourite room in the house as it is where we gather most as a family.

We also added a built-in wood burner to make the space feel cosy in the colder months – we love to watch the flickering flames while it heats the room. We skimmed the dated Artex ceilings in every room in the house, saying farewell to the textured 1970s style, and painted the rooms in pale colours to maximise the natural light. In the lounge and hallway, we restored the original beautiful wooden parquet flooring and created a fireplace as a feature in the lounge. We wanted JULY 2021 | 45

AIM FOR THE SKY Muted shades of denim blue or grey provide a backdrop reminiscent of moody skies. This allows brighter pops of colour to sing, such as oranges, yellows and turquoise. MIX OLD AND NEW Juxtapose rustic wood furniture and tan leather upholstery with modern accents such as designled plastic dining chairs in bold shades and cage lighting.

COVET THE UNFINISHED Get the look of raw plaster with a textured-effect wallpaper in a sandy hue. You could also achieve the same look by layering different tones of chalk wall paint. CELEBRATE TEXTURE Keep pattern to a minimum and allow natural textures to take the attention. A statement cane mirror and baskets with simple motifs complement the scheme.

CREATE A SANCTUARY The luxury safari lodge look combines rustic wood furniture with cosy layered textiles including tufted cushions and knitted throws. Mix earthy orange tones with contemporary greys and blues. ADD AN URBAN TWIST Give the look a sense of modernity by adding in black accents. Wall lights are a contemporary alternative to bedside lamps.

ABOUT ME I’m Laura Hooper, 35, a small business owner. I live with my husband Darren, 40, a builder, and our three daughters, Kirsty, 18, Yasmin, 16, and Lexie, 11, along with Alfie the dog, in a 1940s three-bedroom house in Chard, Somerset. We moved here in December 2016. MY CHALLENGE The original kitchen was tiny and needed relocating. I wanted it to be more of a family room, where we could all spend time together. Relocating her kitchen to the back of the house as part of an extension meant Laura could create the family room of her dreams

W

hen we moved into our new home, back in 2016, there was so much that needed doing, but despite that we could see the potential it had as a family home,’ says Laura. ‘With three girls, the one thing we really wanted was space, but downstairs was going to need some work before that could happen. The kitchen, in particular, was tiny and originally located at the side of the house, with old pine cabinetry and an unpicturesque view.

Rejigging the rooms We knew we were going to have to live

IDEA TO STEAL ‘Use an island to discreetly house small appliances out of sight’

with it for a while until we could afford to extend, so I painted the old cupboards in an off-white and added new handles as a quick update. Skip forward a few years and we were in a position to start the work and relocate the kitchen to the back of the house. We had to knock out some walls and put a steel through the back of the house, along with a roof lantern to let in extra light, which took around six months. Luckily, Darren could do a lot of the work, which kept costs down – the only thing he didn’t do was the electrics.

Saving up The part where the kitchen is now was

actually the old dining room, as well as a bit of the old kitchen and living room too, so it’s quite a large space. Once we’d knocked through we moved the old kitchen units into the new extension, and then lived with it for a while to see how best to plan the room. It also gave us a chance to save up for the new kitchen!

Design choices We planned most of the new design

ourselves and then had it all drawn up JULY 2021 | 85

IDEA TO STEAL

‘A roof lantern will help you gain extra light where it’s needed’

WINE O’CLOCK ‘The island is so useful for housing our wine fridge’

Do it!

DECORATE WITH NEUTRALS Decide on a colour palette – choose up to five shades, with two stronger and three accent colours. Build up layers by mixing taupe, biscuit and coffee, or creams and off-whites with greys. The colours may be soft, but you can afford to go loud on prints, without them feeling too overpowering. Mix up stripes, florals, geo prints and damasks.

Be inspired by nature – soft green-grey and calming ocean blues can be used as accent shades, but stay clear of anything too strong or bright. Keep it interesting with textures – from wood to wool, boucle to rattan, using a variety of materials will give the eye something to take in and keep your scheme far from boring.

PATIO DOORS

Laura’s choice:

PATIO DOORS For a seamless connection between inside and out, take a look at glazed patio doors

N

ow that the weather is warmer, it’s an ideal time to tackle old or outdated patio doors. They can change the feel of the room and, if double-glazed, will help reduce heating bills and save energy too.

Are they expensive? This can depend on whether they are a

replacement or a new addition. You can buy reasonably priced patio doors with all the fittings (including double glazing) from suppliers such as B&Q and Wickes, but installing them professionally will add to the cost, especially if the doors are being fitted for the first time.

What types are there? There are various types, such as bifold,

sliding and folding doors, which will all suit different types and sizes of space. Measure your space first before shopping around, as this will affect the type and price available.

and, if budget allows, can be made to order from places such as The Sash Window Company. More recently, bifold or sliding doors have become popular in older properties as they allow more light in. For complementary designs, try Origin’s Heritage collection. Stay away from white PVC if possible, as this will jar against a period building.

Can I replace patio doors myself? Unless you are a DIY whizz, it is

recommended that you use an expert. Even replacing old doors can be a tricky job, so it is best to call in the professionals. Make sure you shop around for quotes and also consider buying your doors in windows first and asking a joiner to fit these, as this can be more cost effective.

Do I need planning Can I get doors to match permission? No, planning permission isn’t required, but my periodproperty? it may be best to warn your neighbours Traditionally, French doors have been used that you are getting some work done. to update a period property. These help to maintain the look and feel of the house

BEST FOR… CLEANING

Use neat white vinegar decanted into a water spray to make your windows sparkling clean. Simply spray on, then wipe off with screwedup newspaper or a clean dry cloth.

AVOIDING STREAKS

GOOD SLIDER CARE

Use WD-40 or a silicone-based lubricant and spray the entire track. Or try a garage door spray lubricant, which is silicone-based, so doesn’t attract dirt build-up. 88 | JULY 2021

PATIO DOORS CLASSICALLY GLAZED Traditional French door in painted wood, £1,900 George Barnsdale

The only time that planning permission may be needed is when certain conditions were attached to the original permission, such as double glazing, or when expanding windows or doors.

Are there restrictions for aIf your listed building orarea? home is listed, or you live in a listed area, then it is best to seek advice before making any changes to your home. The local planning authority will be able to help, so it is always better to check first.

Great ideas

FOR SMALL BATHROOMS Clever storage options and smart finishes mean that even the smallest of bathrooms can be stylish as well as practical

Get smart with tiles Tile just halfway up a wall to make a

room feel taller – the gap between the top of the tiles and the ceiling creates the illusion of space. Wall mounted taps are another great trick in a compact bathroom – the pipework can be hidden without the need for a bulky basin pedestal. 90 | JULY 2021

SMALL BATHROOM IDEAS

Love it

Create theillusion of space Don’t shy away from including a

freestanding bath in a small bathroom. An oval bath cuts corners which boosts the impression of space. A shallow shelf to hide waste pipes is also handy for adding extra surface space to display bath salts, plants and more.

‘SHOWER ENCLOSURES COME IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZES, INCLUDING QUADRANT DESIGNS, WHICH ARE A NEAT FIT FOR A TIGHT CORNER’ Go for a wall mounted unit Wall-mounted modular furniture

remains a favourite for storage, due to its fuss-free, streamlined look. Available in a range of heights, widths and depths, it means you can create semi-bespoke furniture that best suits your space. There is a wide range of materials and textures available, as well as many colours, from soft hues to strong tones.

Make room for a slipper bath If you can’t squeeze a standard size roll-top tub into your bathroom, consider a shapely slipper bath instead. Many come in short versions and they’ll let you rest your back in style – perfect for a classic bathroom look.

Be clever with glass A walk-in shower with simple glass panels looks barely-there in this bijou bathroom, helping to create the illusion of space. White marble for the wall tiles gives the small space a dash of glamour, without overpowering the look.

Choose flexible furniture Freestanding pieces are a godsend

in small spaces. Look out for ladder shelves or tiered wire storage baskets that will keep luxurious lotions and practical wash bags on show and easy to grab.

‘FITTED FURNITURE WILL UNLOCK STORAGE POTENTIAL DRAMATICALLY, ADAPTING TO THE MOST AWKWARDLY SHAPED SPACES’

Add a shelf to panelling Tongue-and-groove panelling visually

frames the basin and the handy shelf on top makes the perfect display space for trinkets, toiletries and accessories. A deep green-blue paint shade is a relaxing choice for a bathroom and adds interest and warmth to this compact space. 92 | JULY 2021

SMALL BATHROOM IDEAS

Love it

Go bold with wallpaper One of the best ways to disguise a

small bathroom is to create interest. Add a striking wallpaper above simple white tiles and go for a unique, bold or interesting print to maximise the impact. If you have a bath or shower in the room (rather than it being a cloakroom), make sure you buy wallpaper that’s made specifically for bathrooms, which will cope with the damp conditions.

‘FOR A BOUTIQUE HOTEL VIBE, GO FOR A WALLHUNG LOO AND BASIN UNIT WITH DRAWERS AND CABINETS TO MATCH’ Build in niche shelves Recessed shelves are a great space saver, keeping toiletries neat and off the surfaces. Building the shelves into a false wall that hides pipework is a clever use of space. Also consider recessed light fittings – either spot or linear.

Pick a frameless shower screen A sleek walk-in shower can give

the illusion of a bigger space when a frameless screen is used. Pair it with a slimline tray and it will blend into the rest of the room with ease. Choose large format tiles to continue the streamlined look. MOC.BUHTNETNOCERUTUF SHPARGOTOHP

‘Our garden is ALL-YEAR COLOUR

‘The planters add interest, and I can switch them up with the seasons’

COME ON IN!

ABOUT ME I’m Kel Harmer, 40, and I live here with my husband Dan, 40, children Isla, nine, and Emmie, five, and Cosmo the goldendoodle in a four-bedroom, three-storey modern detached house in Portishead, Bristol. We moved here in September 2014 and set about stamping our own personality on the place, which included giving the garden a makeover in June 2020. MY CHALLENGE The garden was so unattractive, with lots of red brick walls and a large brick outhouse encroaching on the space. There were also no plants – it was bare. MY WISH LIST We wanted our garden to be an extension of our indoor space, with new decking, plants and a summerhouse. 94 | JULY 2021

MIAMI-INSPIRED’

Kel has given her washed-out spacea new vibrancy with pops of colour and clever upcycling

W

hen we moved here in 2014 it’s safe to say that our garden was a bit of an eyesore,’ says Kel. ‘An overload of red brick walls stood out, with the side of our garage on show at the back and no plants – it was pretty unattractive, but I was determined to change that!

IDEA TO STEAL

‘Display accessories on a fire surround to create a focal point’

Lick of paint The first step was to get rid of all the red

brick wall surrounding the garden, so we painted them white, which took two weeks. When it came to the back wall of the house, however, I wasn’t sure what to do as it’s a three-storey house, which would have taken a lot of work. Instead, we installed an awning and painted up to that. This is the spot where we get most sun, so it made sense to have a chill-out area here with an outdoor sofa, and after adding window boxes and decorative screens onto the wall it made a much nicer backdrop to sit the sofa against.

Adding structure Next, we had to work out how to section

the garden and hide the ugly garage. We knew we wanted a playhouse for the kids, so we laid some decking to give it a bit of height and chose a summerhouse that blocks out the garage. I painted it in Fresh Rosemary by Cuprinol – a light green colour – and then planted a border of conifer trees down the side of it, along with a little pebble and seashell area.

For example, I added a fireplace that I got from Gumtree – I painted it the same colour as the JULY 2021 | 95

summerhouse. I then added some mirrors – they were plastic designs that I painted – and laid outdoor rugs to keep it soft underfoot. My style is a bit of a mix and I wanted the garden to reflect that – with elements of the Hamptons and Miami – so the accessories and colour scheme were all bought with that in mind.

Low maintenance I was realistic about how much time I’d

want to spend tending to plants, so we chose grasses, lavender and geraniums as we’re not huge gardeners and these are easy to keep alive! We used sleepers to build a border, which we painted dark grey.

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX WHEN IT COMES TO ‘ YOUR GARDEN – WHY NOT HAVE A FIREPLACE AND MIRRORS? WHY NOT CREATE A LOUNGE AREA?’

Family entertaining Some colourful seating, hanging plants

and a few painted flamingos complete the look to create a light, bright space that feels so much bigger than it did originally. Sitting outside on the sofa seating area with the festoon lights on and the firepit going is the perfect entertaining space – we often hang a sheet in front of the fireplace and watch movies out there.’ Find more clever ways to style up your home by going to pinterest.com/ styleathomemag 96 | JULY 2021

mirrors in your garden, but placed cleverly they can make your space look twice the size. Try hanging one in among plants at the back of a border so that it blends in with the background and creates the illusion of another part of the garden. Keep in mind that where you hang it will result in how effective it is – if it reflects your house, for example, that may not work so well, but if you hang the mirror so it reflects lawn, trees or plants, it’s more likely to look like another entire garden beyond. You can always pop something behind the mirror, like a batten, so that your mirror is angled to reflect your desired view.

MINDFUL OASIS

With a little bit of planning you can equip your outdoor spacewith everything you need to makeit a place of relaxation and calm

INTRODUCE A CALMING WATER FEATURE Enjoy the soothing sound and sight of trickling water

1

START SIMPLE

For smaller gardens, choose a selfcontained water feature, such as a bowl, bubbling sphere or mini fountain, that won’t overwhelm the space. Water is recirculated so it will need minimum maintenance and most come complete with a pump. Prices start from around £80; try Primrose for a selection of designs.

2

MAKE A STATEMENT

3

THINK LOGISTICALLY

For something more spectacular in a bigger garden, consider a fountain, cascade or even a water wall. But remember, larger water features will require more planning, plus they need a circulation system to keep the water moving and a filtration system to keep the water clean, and will often require professional installation. Avoid a too-sunny location that can encourage weed growth and site away from trees, as leaves could clog it. You’ll need electricity to power the pump, which must feature a residual current device (RCD) to protect from electric shock. Keep water features covered if there are children around – a feature with no standing water is safest.

3 of the best HOT TUBS

‘WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU SHOULD ALWAYS SHOWER BEFORE USING A HOT TUB; THIS AVOIDS THE INTRODUCTION OF POLLUTANTS SUCH AS SWEAT, DEODORANT, CREAMS AND PERFUMES CONTAMINATING THE WATER’

Cancun AirJet four-person inflatable hot tub, £529, Lay-Z-Spa

CHRIS HAYES, MANAGING DIRECTOR, BISHTA (BRITISH AND IRISH SPA AND HOT TUB ASSOCIATION)

HOW TO CHOOSE A HOT TUB Pour yourself a glass of fizz and slip in for a relaxing night A four-seat tub will suit the average family. You can buy a basic inflatable hot tub for around £400-£600, with designs in fibreglass or acrylic costing £2,500-£4,000. Lighting, audio and water features will cost more and you’ll need to factor in installation and running costs. Wood-fired tubs don’t need electricity, as the heater is fuelled by dry wood – expect to pay upwards of £3,500.

CHOOSE YOURSPOT

Find a solid, level base, such as concrete, which may need reinforcing to handle the

weight of a full tub. You’ll need access to water and electricity, and the surrounding area should be clean so dirt won’t get in.

WORK OUT THE WATERWORKS

Simply fill with a hose and drain out the bottom, using the waste water on your garden. Hot tubs with filtration systems need treating with special sanitising chemicals and the water should be changed once a month. The antibacterial properties of wooden tubs avoid the necessity for chemicals, but the water needs changing more often.

Kantha, which means ‘patched cloth’, is a type of embroidery traditionally found in South Asia, particularly Bangladesh and West Bengal. Women would patch together textiles, often old saris, to create colourful blankets and cushions. Today, kantha quilts make beautiful bedspreads and throws, but can cost a pretty

penny. You can sew your own by sandwiching wadding between vibrant fabrics and working a simple running stitch at narrow intervals to quilt the layers together. Try to keep your stitches an equal length and distance apart, but don’t worry about being too neat – imperfections add charm!

Upcycle a pre-loved table to create a colourful outdoor planter and have fresh picked herbs to hand

Superdec opaque wood protection in Mid Green, from £35 for 2.5ltr, Sadolin

P

eople are increasingly conscious of where their food comes from and growing your own is a low-cost way to stay in control of what ends up on your plate. It’s also the perfect opportunity to get outside in the fresh air and take a mindful moment while nurturing homegrown plants. Whether you have a garden or balcony, this upcycled table makes a resourceful planter for growing herbs and other kitchen favourites, such as salad leaves and fiery chillies. YOU WILL NEED Old wooden table Basic tool kit Sandpaper Methylated spirits Lint-free cloth Garden paint Paintbrush Soil Selection of herb plants

DISASSEMBLE THE TABLE TOP Remove the table top by either unscrewing or sawing off the legs. Invert the supporting wooden planks to create a soil bed. SAND THE WOOD Lightly sand the surface of the wood using P180 or P240 grade sandpaper. Abrade in the direction of the grain to avoid leaving visible marks on the wood. CLEAN THE SURFACE Dust off the surface using either a cloth or a brush, wiping or brushing across the grain, as well as up and down. Degrease or clean the surface using methylated spirits on a lint-free cloth. PAINT THE TABLE Apply the first coat of garden paint in the colour of your choice to the table top and legs. Allow to dry for three to four hours. Once completely dry, apply a second coat to all the pieces. PLANT WITH HERBS Once the second coat is dry, screw the upturned table top onto the four legs. Fill the bed with soil and plant herbs in rows, leaving 5cm gaps between the plants.
