FOCUS ON THE TOPIC 1 Look at these quotations. Which ones express attitudes that are … a) positive? b) negative? c) neither?

Expressing the future – page 28 English has three ways to express the future: be going to / will / present continuous.

be going to We use be going to for intentions and confident predictions. The future event is a result of what someone is going to do, or what we can see is going to happen.

Some see the glass as half full, others as half empty.

1.43 Read and listen to the text and answer the questions. 1 Identify the expressions that mean … a) be equal to difficult situations. b) take responsibility for your life (two expressions). c) it’s the responsibility of. d) do nothing. e) not take difficult decisions (two expressions). f) triumph over problems. g) be active and do things. 2 Which of the highlighted expressions indicate … a) an active attitude? b) a passive attitude? 3 According to the author, it’s better to adopt a … attitude. a) positive b) negative c) neutral d) realistic

Affirmative • subject + am / is / are + going to + base form of main verb (e.g. I’m going to study French. We’re going to have dinner.)

The whole world in your hands Have a good look in the mirror. What kind of person are you? Do you like to take the initiative? Do you live your own life? Or do you prefer to play it safe and take the easy option? Some people say that we can’t change the way we are and that our personality is fixed in our genes. I’m not convinced. Surely we all have some freedom to decide. Each of us has the ability to rise to challenges, and with the right attitude we can all overcome setbacks. The choice is simple: take charge of your own life, or sit back and let life happen to you. In the end, it’s up to each of us to decide.
