# La Obra Social “la Caixa”, en colaboración con el Museo Nacional del Prado, presenta esta exposición, que analiza las obras de pequeño formato de la colección del Museo.

Ordenadas de forma cronológica, trazan un intenso recorrido por la historia del arte que relata la singularidad del Museo y la excelencia de sus grandes artistas, desde finales del siglo XIV y principios del XV hasta Goya y el siglo XIX con Fortuny.

ART, LIFE AND AWARENESS” ›› The exhibition uses audiovisual and interactive resources to take visitors back in time a thousand years to see, hear, smell and, in short, experience what the people behind the stones – the all-powerful clergy and the lords – were really like. The display also gives an insight into the aesthetics of an age, the technological advances and innovation of the Romanesque as a whole: a unique,

singular element of heritage both inside Catalonia and beyond its boundaries.

“CARLES CASAGEMAS. EL ARTISTA DEBAJO DEL MITO” # Esta exposición se propone reivindicar la obra de un artista que murió nada más iniciarse el siglo XX. La figura de Carles Casagemas ha estado ligada a la de Picasso, de quien fue uno de sus grandes amigos de juventud. Adquirió una dimensión mítica tras su suicidio, que condicionó la percepción de su obra.

›› This exhibition sets out to vindicate the work of an artist who died at the very beginning of the twentieth century. The figure of Casagemas has been linked to that of Picasso, who as a young man was one of his great friends.

He took on a mythical dimension following his suicide, an event that conditioned the response to his work.

La muestra recuerda que Barcelona fue zona neutral durante el conflicto bélico, lo que provocó que acogiera a artistas europeos exiliados y acontecimientos culturales que fueron interrumpidos por la contienda.

# "Enverinats" nos acerca al mundo del veneno en la naturaleza con 50 animales vivos como tarántulas, ranas o serpientes y también una selección significativa de plantas, setas y minerales. La exposición muestra la función y usos del veneno, desmitifica creencias y desvela facetas desconocidas de esta sustancia tóxica capaz de matar a un hombre en dos minutos, pero también de ser útil en el tratamiento de enfermedades neurodegenerativas.

›› "Enverinats" gives us a close-up on the world of Nature's venoms, with 50 live animals such as tarantulas, frogs and snakes, as well as a considerable number of plants, mushrooms and minerals.

The exhibition shows us the workings and uses of poison, demystifying beliefs and revealing unknown aspects of this toxic substance which can kill a man in two minutes but is also used in treating diseases such as Alzheimer's or epilepsy.

“FIESTAS TRADICIONALES” El otoño y el invierno traen consigo en Barcelona y alrededores algunas fiestas de carácter popular y larga tradición que no hay que perderse. El 1 de noviembre se celebra la festividad de Todos los Santos, y con ella una de las costumbres más características, “La Castanyada”, una fiesta popular en la que la castaña es la gran protagonista como producto representativo del otoño.

Se puede degustar asada junto a otros productos gastronómicos como los boniatos, el vino dulce o los “panellets”, pequeños dulces de diversas formas hechos esencialmente de mazapán. En los primeros días de diciembre se celebra la famosa “Fira de L’avet” (Feria del abeto) en la bella localidad de Espinelves, donde se venden árboles de Navidad.

Pero innumerables poblaciones celebran ferias en las que además de abetos se ofrecen productos navideños, artesanales y alimentos tradicionales. La Fira de Santa Llúcia en la ciudad de Barcelona es un mercadillo navideño con más de 300 puestos que atrae a decenas de miles de visitantes.

No hay barcelonés que no haya acudido a ella en busca de alguna figurita de belén, árbol o adorno. Se ubica en la Plaza de La Catedral y alrededores.

También, en la capital catalana, a la sombra de la Sagrada Familia, se reúne la tradicional oferta navideña. Por último, los belenes vivientes, la costumbre de representar el Nacimiento de Jesús reproduciéndolo de forma escénica a través de personajes vivos y figuras plásticas. Es de nombrar el de Corbera de Llobregat, el más antiguo de Catalunya. El pesebre catalán tiene una figura propia, el “caganer”, cuyo origen se remonta al siglo XVIII.

All Saints’ Day is celebrated on the 1st of November, and with it one of the most characteristic markers of autumn, “La Castanyada”,

a popular festival featuring chestnuts, an important autumn crop. They can be eaten roasted along with other delectable goods like sweet potatoes, sweet wine and “panellets”, tiny sweets in endless shapes made mainly of marzipan. The early days of December witness the famous “Fira de L’avet” (Fir Tree Fair) in the lovely town of Espinelves, where Christmas trees are sold. However, countless towns celebrate festivals which feature not only fir trees but also Christmas goods, crafts and traditional foods. The “Fira de Santa Llúcia” (Fair of Saint Lucia) in the city of Barcelona is an outdoor Christmas market with more than 300 stands that attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year.

There is not a single Barcelona native who has not gone there is search of a nativity scene figure, a Christmas tree or an ornament.

It is held in the Cathedral Square and its surroundings. Another major Christmas fair in Barcelona is located in the shadow of the Sagrada Familia. We cannot fail to mention the live nativity scenes, the tradition of portraying Jesus’ birth through a blend of live and plastic figures; the oldest live nativity scene is in the town of Corbera de Llobregat. Its wonderful sights, gastronomy, shops, sea and good climate are just some of the things that attract thousands of tourists each year. But there isn’t just one Barcelona take a risk and discover the varioustowns the city holds within it.

Muchas ciudades en una. Desde el mar hasta la montaña, entre los ríos Besós y Llobregat descubrirás la autentica Barcelona recorriendo sus distritos. El Barrio Gótico, uno de los más concurridos por el turismo donde sus callejones rebosan historia. Murallas romanas, restos medievales o la Catedral de Barcelona se hayan en pleno centro barcelonés.

Perderse por la bohemia Gracia, donde sus calles y plazas están abiertas a la multiculturidad, cines como el Verdi y plazas como la del Diamant se encuentran entre pequeñas tiendas creativas y restaurantes de todo tipo. En la parte alta de Gracia se encuentra Horta-Guinardo, que aparte del concurrido Park Güell, alberga masías y zonas verdes como el bonito “Parque del Laberinto” o espacios como “Los lavaderos de Horta”. Para conocer el lado más modernista y urbano de Barcelona se recomienda pasear por el Eixample, bajar por la comercial Gran de Gracia hasta llegar a la animada Diagonal. Para una experiencia divertida hay que acercarse hasta Sants-Montjuïc, donde sus fuentes mágicas ofrecen un espectáculo de agua, colorido y música y la terraza del MNAC garantiza unas bellas vistas de toda Barcelona. Subir por el carrer de Sants, popular por su tiendas, para llegar hasta Les Corts, donde está ubicado el Camp Nou, el famoso campo de fútbol del F.C. Barcelona. En Les Corts hay zonas ajardinadas y magníficos parques como el

de Cervantes o el de Palau Reial. Más al norte, encontramos Sarrià-Sant Gervasi, una zona residencial tranquila que sube por la cultural Avenida Tibidabo hasta llegar al tradicional parque de atracciones de Barcelona. Al este Nou Barris acoge un amplio abanico de espacios verdes con bares y restaurantes donde deleitarse, en Sant Andreu las tradiciones nunca faltan, los Tres Tombs o el Esclat mantienen el espíritu del antiguo pueblo barcelonés que contrasta con la nueva faceta de Barcelona, patente en Sant Martí.

También montaña Also hills Playa, urbanismo y también montaña. A tan sólo unos minutos de las zonas más urbanas o playeras se encuentra la sierra que abraza Barcelona: Collserola. Situada en el área metropolitana la sierra contiene el Parque de Collserola, un espacio protegido desde 1987. Ideal para disfrutar de la naturaleza en su máximo esplendor, bosques mediterráneos de pinos, encinas y robles, merenderos como el de les Planes y paseos con vistas a la ciudad como el de la carretera de les Aigües.

Collserola está considerada el pulmón verde de Barcelona. lleno de rutas y miradores donde respirar aire puro y divertirse a un paso del núcleo urbano.

Then take Carrer de Sants, popular for its shops, to reach Les Corts with the Camp Nou stadium, the famous home of F.C. Barcelona. Les Corts has wonderful gardens and parks such as Cervantes and Palau Reial. Further north we find Sarrià-Sant Gervasi, a quiet residential area that extends along the cultural Avinguda Tibidabo up to Barcelona’s traditional funfair. To the east, Nou Barris has a wide range of natural areas with delightful bars and restaurants while Sant Andreu maintains the old traditions such as Tres Tombs and Esclat, keeping alive the spirit of the old town of Barcelona and contrasting with its new facet, evident in Sant Martí. Here you can see the city’s latest driving force, right next to the sea and leaving its industrial past behind. Innovation and technology advance hand in hand in Barcelona, present and future.

Paseando por la ciudad # Barrio Gótico

Recorrido a pie. Duración aproximada: 2-3 horas.

# El Barrio Gótico comprende lo que antiguamente

se llamaba barrio de la catedral. Aquí se encuentran los grandes edificios góticos que señalan el apogeo de la ciudad y su cultura en la Edad Media.

También se conservan los restos de las antiguas fortificaciones y palacios que fundaron los romanos sobre el Mons Taber, como el templo dedicado a Augusto y las murallas. Nuestro itinerario empieza en la Plaça Nova.

1 # Portal del Bisbe Flanqueado por dos torres cilíndricas de la antigua muralla romana, al lado del actual Palacio Episcopal.

2 # Palacio Episcopal Calle del Bisbe Irurita. Edificado a finales del siglo XII y principios del XIII. 3 # Plaça de Sant Felip Neri (Pasado el Palacio Episcopal a la derecha). Uno de los rincones más poéticos de la ciudad.

4 # Casa del Arcediano o casa de l´Ardiaca Carrer de Santa Llúcia. Fue levantada sobre las murallas romanas, como residencia, en el siglo XV, del arcediano de la catedral. Es notable el patio tipo claustro, que centra una fuente gótica.

5 # Interior de la catedral Tres naves de crucero y veintinueve capillas laterales, en una de las cuales, la del Santísimo, se venera el Cristo de Lepanto. Es de admirar: El coro de tallas medievales y renacentistas, el Altar Mayor y la cripta de Santa Eulalia.

6 # Claustros de la catedral Bellísimo jardín central de palmeras y magnolias.

Interesantes verjas de hierro forjado.

7 # Puerta de la Piedad Acceso al claustro de la catedral. En el tímpano destaca una Piedad labrada en madera, de escuela flamenca.

8 # Casa de los Canónigos o dels Canonges Edificio gótico del siglo XIV, restaurado. Un paso superior cruza la calle del Bisbe Irurita.

9 # Centre Excursionista de Catalunya Carrer Paradís,10. En su interior se conservan las columnas romanas que pertenecieron al templo dedicado a Augusto.

On foot. Approximate duration: 2-3 hours. ›› The Gothic Quarter is what used to be known ago as the “Cathedral Quarter”. The great gothic buildings which marked the high point of the city and its culture during the Middle Ages are to be found here. Here Likewise, are the remains of the ancient fortified walls and palaces built by the Romans on the “Mons Taber” such as, the temple dedicatet to Augustus. Our itinerary begins in the Plaça Nova.

2 » Palace Episcopal (Bishop´s Palace) Carrer del Bisbe Irurita. Built at the end of the 12th Century and the beginning of the 13th Century.

3 » Plaça de Sant Felip Neri (Past the Bishop´s Palace and to the right). One of the most lyrical places of the city.

4 » Casa de l´Ardiaca Carrer de Santa Llúcia. Built on the Roman walls during the 15th Century as a residence for the Archdeacon of the Cathedral. The cloister- type patio with is gothic fountain is noteworthy.

5 » Interior of the Cathedral Three cruciform aisles and twenty- nine lateral chapels in one of which Cristo de Lepanto is venerated.

Noteworthy: The choirstall which features both medieval and rennaissance elements.

11 » Casa de la Ciutat or City Hall Next to the Neo-Classical facade (19th Century) there is a lateral gothic facade (14th Century) and some levely steps. “Saló de Cròniques” with paintings by Josep Ma. Sert and the historical “Saló de Cent”.

# La Rambla, que se extiende entre la Plaça de

Catalunya y el puerto, fue durante siglos el corazón de la ciudad, y aún hoy día sigue siendo la vía más representativa, popular y cosmopolita de la ciudad.

Nuestro itinerario comienza en la cabecera de la Rambla, donde ésta se abre a la Pl. de Catalunya.

1 # Font de Canaletes.

Fuente de hierro del siglo XIX. Uno de los símbolos de la ciudad.

2 # Iglesia de Belén.

En la esquina con la calle del Carme. Antigua iglesia de los jesuitas. Interior de estilo gótico catalán.

3 # Palau Moja.

Situado enfrente de la iglesia de Belén. Casa señorial de principios del siglo XVIII.

4 # Palau de la Virreina. (Rambla, 99) Uno de los edificios más suntuosos de La Rambla.

En los bajos hay una Oficina de información Cultural.

5 # Mercado de Sant Josep o de la “Boqueria”.

Construcción de hierro que alberga uno de los mercados de alimentación más típicos y tradicionales.

6 # Pla de la Boqueria.

Recibe este nombre el llano comprendido entre la calle Hospital y la calle de la Boquería. En el suelo hay un pavimento de Joan Miró.

7 # Gran Teatro del Liceo.

Es uno de los edificios emble- máticos de la Rambla.

Inagurado en 1847, se ha convertido en uno de los primeros escenarios líricos del mundo.

8 # Palau Güell. (Carrer Nou de la Rambla, 3) Obra de Antonio Gaudí, construida como residencia en Barcelona del conde Güell.

9 # Plaça Reial.

Plaza porticada en edificios uniformes. Fuente de hierro en el centro. Las farolas son obra de Gaudí.

10 # Museo de Cera.

Edificio construido en 1867 forma parte del Patrimonio Arquitectónico Nacional.

11 # Reials Drassanes.

Al final de la Rambla se conservan las mayores y más completas atarazanas medievales que existen en la actualidad. En el interior se aloja el Museu Marítim de Barcelona.

Located opposite the Betlem church. Important house at the beginning of the 18th Century.

7 » Gran Teatro del Liceo.

Among the most emblematic buildings on the Ramblas.

Al salir podemos contemplar la ciudad desde el mar en las Golondrinas, barcazas de dos pisos que realizan recorridos por el puerto. Siguiendo el recorrido por El Moll de la Fusta se puede disfrutar de la espléndida vista. # “Eixample” significa Ensanche, la ampliación urbanística de la ciudad que se construyó en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, según el proyecto de Ildefonso Cerdà. El “Eixample”, dividido en Izquierda y Derecha por la Rambla de Catalunya, muestra su mayor esplendor modernista en la Derecha, donde hemos centrado nuestro itinerario que comienza en la Plaça de Catalunya.

» “Eixample” means extension and here it refers to the urban expansion of the city which was carried out in the second half of the 19th Century according tho the plans drawn by Ildefons Cerdà. The “Eixample”, which is divided into two by the Rambla de Catalunya, is of greatest interesnt from the point of view of “Modernism”on the right and it is there that we have routed our itinerary.

Paseo por el amor y la muerte Las rutas diurnas y nocturnas por los cementerios de Montjuïc y Poblenou, las dos necropolis monumentales de la ciudad, nos descubren un patrimonio artístico y cultural de gran valor, así como dos siglos de vida cotidiana en Barcelona: epidemias, aventuras, pobreza y prosperidad...son episodios reflejados en los panteones y tumbas, testigos de la evolución de la ciudad.

La Colección de Carrozas Fúnebres, en la ruta del Cementerio de Montjuic, también es una muestra.

Hearse Collection. A walk through love and death The day and night-time routes through the cemeteries of Montjuïc and Poblenou, the city’s two large graveyards, reveals an incredible artistic and cultural heritage as well as two centuries of everyday life in Barcelona: epidemics, adventures, poverty and prosperity... these are the events reflected in the pantheons and tombs, witnesses of the city’s evolution.

The Hearse Collection, on the Montjuïc Cemetery route, is also an exhibition.

Gaudí

Antoni Gaudí Cornet # Nació en Reus, en el 1852. Realizó los estudios de arquitectura en la Escuela Provincial de Arquitectura de Barce­lona. Antes de finalizar sus estudios, Gaudí colabora con el arquitecto Josep Fontseré en el proyecto del Parque de la Ciudadela. En 1878 gana por concurso la realización de un proyecto de farolas para la Plaça Reial de Barcelona, existentes en la actualidad. Entre 1883 y 1926, Gaudí deja a esta ciudad una muestra de obras de muy distinta índole. ›› Was born i Reus in 1852. He studied architecture in Barcelona Provincial School of Architecture. Before finishing his studies he collaborated with Josep Fontseré, architect, in the Citadella Park project. In 1878 he won a contest to carry out a street lights project for Barcelona´s Plaza Real. Those street ligths still exist. Between 1883 and 1926 Gaudí left in Barcelona a sample of ten different and varied works.

Eusebio Güell was Gaudi´s protector.The forged iron gate is a representation of Ladon, a mythological winged dragon which was beaten by Hercules. # Esta es la obra de mayor envergadura, en extensión que Gaudí realizó en Barcelona. Se trata de una zona de 20 hectáreas, cuyo objetivo inicial era convertirla en una ciudad -jardín al estilo inglés. En el interior del parque se encuentra la Casa-Museo , donde vivió Gaudí antes de trasladarse a la Sagrada Familia. Cabe destacar el banco ondulado del “trencadís” en el que hizo sentar a un obrero para tomar las medidas y proyectarlo. ›› This is Gaudi´s largest work in Barcelona. It is an area which main aim was to become a british style “garden-city”. Inside the Park, we can find the House-Museum where Gaudí lived beforemoving to the "Sagrada Familia" (The Holy Family). One of its key elementsis the wavy bench of the "trencadis" (mosaic) where he asked a worker to sit in order to take measures and design the project.

MAGICAL FOUNTAIN FOUNTAINS OF MONTJUÏC

Cuando los trabajos para la gran Exposición Universal de 1929 estaban ya muy adelantados, sus organizadores consideraron que faltaba "alguna cosa" especial que la hiciera diferente. Fue entonces cuando Carlos Buigas presentó su proyecto para una "obra colosal, atrevida y costosa". El 18 de junio de 1928, el joven ingeniero expuso delante del Comité Ejecutivo de la Exposición 460 planos y 70 grandes dibujos en los que había dado vida a los sueños que su técnica era capaz de albergar. El proyecto sorprendió y encandiló hasta el punto de ser tachado de locura por algunos de los asistentes. La mayor fuente ornamental de Barcelona nos ofrece un espectáculo que combina la música, el movimiento del agua y los juegos de luces de colores con más de 50 variantes.

When construction for the 1929 Barcelona World’s Fair was already well underway, its organisers realised that “something special” was missing that would make it stand out. That was when Carlos Buigas submitted his designs for a “colossal, bold and costly project”.

On the 18th of June 1928, the young engineer showed the Fair’s Executive Committee 460 blueprints and 70 large drawings in which he brought to life the dreams that his technical expertise was able to harbour. The project astonished and dazzled the committee so much that it was even written off as a folly by some of its members. The largest ornamental fountain in Barcelona offers a show that combines music, the movement of the water and the play of more than 50 varieties of coloured lights..

Mercados semanales Uno de los grandes atractivos que ofrece Vic al visitante es El Mercadal, o Plaza Mayor, es uno de los espacios más característicos y dinámicos de la ciudad. The autumn is here and with it comes the wild mushroom (bolet) season, a popular tradition in all of Catalonia. In the autumn, wild mushrooms come to the fore along with other seasonal products, including pumpkin, yams and jams. Thousands of aficionados make forays into the forest to search for mushrooms, the markets fill with these tiny, fleeting gems that bring flavour and delicacy to dishes, and many restaurants in Barcelona feature them on their menus. The most famous wild mushrooms in Catalonia are the rovelló (bloody milk cap), the cep (porcini), the rosinyol

(chanterelle), the ou de reig (Caesar’s mushroom), the fredolic (Grey Knight mushroom) and the llenega (waxy cap). As for homemade recipes, there are thousands of them. Traditional Catalan cuisine uses both fresh wild mushrooms, which should be cleaned with a bit of water, and dried, salted or candied ones.

They are primarily used to accompany meat stews, legumes, rice and fish.

Some of the most popular recipes are potatoes with Grey Knight mushrooms, beef with wild mushrooms or grilled bloody milk cap mushrooms with butifarra sausage.
