Albert Casals An amazing story of self-improvement

What’s happened to that boy with the blue hair that travelled alone and in a wheelchair? These are Albert Casals’ newest adventures. Optimism and vitality at 100%. Now, two years after El món sobre rodes, Albert has grown up, has studied one year of Philosophy, has travelled and... has fallen in love! In Sense fronteres, Albert Casals accounts with his direct and true writing his adventures and experiences during those days: from the South American forests to the African deserts, from where he returned before than expected because... because... because he had a new and baffling feeling: he missed a girl who stayed in Barcelona. Because of that, because now he had found out that travelling on his own was not as great as before, Anna and him decided to travel together to Japan. Sense fronteres also includes some short stories that Albert wrote while he was travelling, and an extra chapter where he updates his own philosophy.

Albert Casals was born in Barcelona in 1990. When he was five he suffered from mononucleosis, and this led him to a leukaemia that has left him in a wheelchair. Since he was seven, he lives in Esparraguera with his parents and his sister. He has travelled all around the world since he was fourteen. He’s in his twenties now, and has started to study Philosophy, a degree that he combines with his exciting travels. He is ambassador for the foundation Step by Step, devoted to the rehabilitation of patients with spinal cord injuries. His first book, El món sobre rodes (Edicions 62, 2009) had an amazing reception and was one of the bestselling books of 2009.

Joan Antoni Martín & Víctor Díez A funny series that will become the success of the year

La cocina de los monstruos is an amusing memoir from the most famous zombie chef on the planet. His job involves cooking the most impossible dishes out of the most dangerous ingredients: dragons, vampires, witches and the many other monstrous beings who enthusiastically go about the business of scaring humankind. Bermúdez hates cleanliness, camaraderie and, especially, children. So, as the head cook in a school kitchen, it’s no surprise that noone likes him. Then an unfortunate accident with ingredients past their sell-by date leads to Bermúdez waking the dead at a nearby cemetery and turning into a zombie himself. With the help of his unpleasant rat and Pablo, the only child who isn’t scared of him, Bermúdez the Zombie will, book by book, be transformed from a simple school cook to an internationally renowned chef thanks to some unique dishes cooked with the help of monsters whom he at first tries to hunt but who later become his best friends.

Víctor Díez (Barcelona, 1976) is a cartoonist, although he has also made some things as a graphic designer. Even though he has made several things for publishing houses, this would be his first job as the illustrator of a series of books. Joan Antoni Martín graduated in Media Studies with good marks in the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, but nobody has ever demanded him his degree to work as a screenwriter. Until now, he has published the great novel 200 locuras para que te quedes conmigo (Plaza & Janés) and the books for children Menudos chistes (Montena) and Laya y el horripilante monstruo de champú (Edebé). Had he been good in gym at school, maybe now he would have a permanent job with a decent schedule, but he wouldn’thave all this fun.

Jordi Sierra i Fabra A book about a touching subject by one of our most prolific young adults writers

A song of hope in the great struggle to definitively eradicate the exploitation of children. A journalist finds a message in a rug he bought in India written by the boy who weaved it. It is a plea for help, a desperate cry which he cannot ignore. Although millions of children are exploited in the world, this message bears a name, Iqbal, and a location: the city of Madurai. A visit to the shop where the rug was bought will present the protagonist with the truth that enslaved children are sold by their own parents. Iqbal died some time before, but slave children just like him remain. The protagonist will have to decide what a westerner can do in an unknown land where child slavery is permitted. Faithful to his principles, he will rescue the nine children enslaved like Iqbal. The surprising climax of the story, full of strength and courage, is a paean to hope in the great struggle to definitively eradicate child exploitation.

Jordi Sierra i Fabra was born in Barcelona in 1947. Passionate about literature and music, he has written everything from crime novels to science fiction via essays, history and biography, and is also an extremely successful writer of literature for young people.

Winner of the 2010 edition of the Apel·les Mestres award for children literature.

Nahir Gutiérrez & Álex Omist There are many things that children want to know about but we don’t know how to properly explain. Very often this is because we are caught off-guard but also because no really important question ever has a single answer. This story arose from the firm wish to capture a memory, swelled with the surprising questions that only children know how to ask and is only a small part of the galaxy of answers we can offer our loved ones. ¿Dónde está güelita Queta? is an exploration of loss, always difficult, and for children brutally inexplicable, and is also an homage and trail of breadcrumbs leading towards learning to remember those who are gone and finding ways to keep them present forever.
