Rubén Amón

The definitive biography of the biggest tenor of all times. Translated into Russian. It is not a usual biography, but also a book about all the public and outstanding sides of the singer.

In the dawn of his seventh decade of life, Plácido Domingo still goes onstage with the same strength as he did in his debut. A real sociological phenomenon in Spain and in all the world, his rate of influence and international popularity, have lead him to be appointed as the best tenor of all times, according to a BBC survey. His figure, his unbeatable vocal career, his past and his future are tackled in this book, in which Domingo also speaks in first person. A tireless being, a very human celebrity, a singer without limits. The most relevant and never before revealed moments of the great vocal myth of Spain.

It is a book written with Plácido and his people, and not only a book about the singer, for the author is a person close to the tenor. Plácido Domingo is a sociological genius in Spain and in all the world. His degree of influence and popularity is quite high worldwide.

Lorenzo Fernández Bueno What did Colonel Percy H. Fawcett find in the Rare Books section of the National Library in Rio de Janeiro that made him immediately set off on a life-long search for a mysterious city lost in the depths of the Amazon jungle? Why did the Nazi archaeologist Otto Rahn spend years scouring Cathar settlements convinced that the Holy Grail was hidden in a cave in the mountainous region? What drove Shackleton to embark upon on the greatest adventure ever known, which would only lead him to his own death? These are some of the mysteries explored by Lorenzo Fernández Bueno as he travels to the putative destinations of ten great explorers...

The author’s previous works (Las claves del Código da Vinci, Los guardianes del secreto, Crónicas del misterio, Gótica: secretos, leyendas y simbología oculta de las catedrales) have been great successes with readers. A film is about to come out about Percy Harrison Fawcett, profiled in The Explorer’s Curse, starring Brad Pitt.

frankfurt 2011 non fiction books biography

Heinrich ThyssenBornemisza The fascinating life of Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen Bornemisza as told by himself; an exhaustive memoir of his entire life, leaving nothing out. This is a life story worthy of a Hollywood film. The book begins with his origins, the start of the Thyssen Empire on the 17th May 1842 with the birth of August, Heinrich’s grandfather, and continues with the Baron’s rise, at 23 years of age, to the head of the family business, an empire which he knew how to manage to perfection thanks to his excellent business instincts; he had a knack for buying and selling at just the right moment – a talent he claims to be the secret of his success. A significant part of his memoir is dedicated to his love of art, which can also be traced back to his grandfather and was passed onto him by his father, who owned eight hundred major works when he died. The Baron’s continuance of this family trait over his lifetime saw him build up the most important private art collection in the world. The memoir also covers the Baron’s turbulent love life in detail. He was married five times

and had five children from these unions, some his own blood, others not. It further includes his no less agitated social life, full of luxury and travel, meeting some of the most important people in the world. And it finally covers the controversial subject of the inheritance which has always and continues to be associated with the Thyssen name.

A fascinating, entertaining, revealing and surprising book, presenting the personality of a man who might well have come across as frivolous and superficial but was actually profoundly intelligent, visionary and enterprising in every aspect of his life, a man who has undoubtedly left an important legacy for our country. The protagonist and author of the memoir writes about many interesting aspects of his business, artistic and personal life, which in spite of his death is still very relevant, both for his artistic and business legacy and his lingering – indirect – presence in the media. The book is extremely well structured by chapters, its different subjects are well separated and documented. The memoir was dictated by the Baron and so the text is written in his personal voice.

Antonio Salas After six years infiltrating various terrorist organisations under the cover of the fictitious identity of Muhammed Abdallah, arises The Palestinian (‘El Palestino’), a startling chronicle in which the well known investigative journalist, Antonio Salas, tells us of his time living on the edge. In it he attempts to reveal to his readers what is true or false in the terrifying news which hits us day after day regarding the rising violence in the world. Spain, Palestine, Israel, Morocco, Tunisia, Syria, Mauritania, Venezuela, Egypt, Sweden and Lebanon are the settings for this unprecedented investigation, so valuable it goes beyond the limits of paper.

Antonio Salas is the pseudonym of a well known investigative journalist who must keep his identity secret for obvious reasons. Since Diary of a Skinhead (‘Diario de un skin’), 2003´s best selling non-fiction book in Spain, he has received as much praise as he has death threats. He followed this title with another equally polemical: The Year I Trafficked Women (‘El año que trafiqué con mujeres’), where

he centred himself in the white slave trade networks. His materials have been used as evidence in many cases such as that which ended in the conviction of Hammerskin España, and have prompted political actions such as that of the Mexican government ordering the investigation of the trafficking of girls from Chiapas.

After six years of travelling around thirteen countries and four continents and spending “up to the last penny and up to the last drop of energy and strength”, Antonio Salas has described his experiences as a mole in the networks of international terrorism. A thorough investigation with surprising revelations.

Currently, the business world is beginning to place more importance on intuition, heart, etc.

Can there be harmony between our business values and the moral principals that guide us? What do we hope to get from our job? A simple monetary compensation or an activity that helps us to achieve our full potential? Should our natural talent and abilities have something to do with our profession? When do we feel committed and full of energy? When does what we do take on significance and meaning? Revised version from the 2007 edition of the book. The simplicity of the framework of the book will show the reader how the knowledge of the basic economy concepts can help us all to understand the economical, political and social changes in our world.

Alfredo Pastor It is obvious that we live in a world ruled by economic phenomena: unemployment, inflation, fiscal policy, the cost of money, markets, interest rates, monetary policy, the role of the state, the global distribution of wealth and the nature of the laws of the market. These phenomena affect and condition our lives every day of the year. However, most of us do not really understand the true mechanisms of the economic factors that surround us, which we think are only the concern of brainy specialists. Alfredo Pastor manages to teach us the basic principles of a subject that concerns us directly, because we participate in it every day of our lives.

Alfredo Pastor has managed to explain the basic principles of a subject that we all build together, a science –a humble science– that is and should be at the service of the citizen and not the other way round.

The Humble Science Crítica / 336 pages / January 2011 Alfredo Pastor has a PhD in Economics by the Universitat de Barcelona and by the Massachussets Institute of Technology. Previously, he has been a dean for the China-Europe International Business School, Secretary of State for Economy, economist in the World Bank, General Manager

of the INI, Chairman of Enher and Director of the Instituto de la Empresa Familiar (Institute of the Family Company). At present he is a docent at the IESE and has the Chair of Spain in the China-Europe International Business School (CEIBS).

An explanation of the world via economics.

Anxo Penalonga Why do they call it a democracy when it’s really an oligarchy? Why are cocaine consumers bad for the environment? Homo Economicus is an interesting, pertinent look at the world around us through the lens of economics, a science that can answer many of our worries and questions about a wide variety of subjects including politics, social relations and work. His conclusions might seem unreal and even shocking but they’ll definitely surprise you. It is not, however, a book of banal anecdotes and assorted curiosities. The author develops arguments and makes statements that will help us to understand contemporary themes and the mechanisms that structure our society. Why is it so hard to find a job? What are the flaws of Spanish politics? What are the main causes of the financial crisis?

Presents an original focus that will help readers to understand many different aspects of life via economics. It is divided into short chapters and brief explanations based on contemporary events and curious anecdotes. It is a controversial book which uses an economic basis to argue for the legalization of drugs and the expansion of multinational organizations into the third world.

Homo Economicus Gestión 2000 / 240 pages / April 2011 Anxo Penalonga (Lugo, 1969) is a professor of Economics. He graduated in 1993 and since then has given classes at schools, to candidates and at universities. He came first in his Business Administration exam and has worked on over thirty economics

“Julián Casanova has written a brilliant political and ideological synthesis of the processes which caused the European crisis of the 20th Century as well as its repercussions for smaller countries... This is highly recommended reading”.

Julián Casanova The First World War is considered by many historians to be the watershed of European history in the 20th Century. The destruction and millions of deaths that the First World War caused, the changes in borders, impact of the Russian Revolution and problems millions of ex-soldiers had with adapting to civilian life were at the heart of the violence and confrontational culture which became endemic in many societies during that turbulent period. This book examines these factors in detail: the Russian revolution and the rise of fascism, democratic decline and authoritarian advances, the culture of confrontation and the consequences all these factors had for Europe.

“There are few historians – Spanish or European – who are able to capture the immense complexity of the period and to do so in an accessible way. Julian Casanova, who has already written a series of books which have combined profound analysis with an attractive, lively style, is one of them. This magnificent book resounds with wisdom and literary excellence. It is an achievement of which any international historian would be very proud.” PAUL PRESTON

A cookery book with a historical flavour. An original way of discovering the ancient pleasures of gastronomy.

Ángeles Díaz Simón What did meatballs taste like in Ancient Mesopotamia? How do you make hamburgers worthy of an Egyptian Pharaoh? What ingredients go into an Ancient Greek soup? What was Roman garum? What was so special about green soup in the Middle Ages? What were the shards and bones that Don Quixote ate? Ángeles Díaz Simón sets out to discover the mysterious tastes and smells of the kitchens of our ancestors. In order to do this she takes us on a gastronomic journey into the past, presenting recipes for dishes which might be very old but will still be new to our palates. A comprehensive overview which will undoubtedly be seen as an essential work of reference for all those wishing to know more about this period of Spanish history.

Borja de Riquer General Franco’s dictatorship lasted the longest of any of the regimes which governed Spain in the 20th Century. It must thus be considered in all its complexity; not just its origins and nature but also aspects such as the long period of repression and resistance, of initial poverty and economic development, political immobility, and the progressive decline of the system when a closely controlled culture was eventually able to make its dissenting voices heard. Professor Borja de Riquer has realised an ambitious vision which encompasses politics, economic evolution and social and cultural change, a synthesis drawn from recent research and testimony which is only now coming to light: internal reports from the regime’s organizations, the memories of the people involved, etc. All this is a comprehensive achievement which will undoubtedly become an essential work of reference for anyone wishing to know more about this period of Spanish history.

Josep Sánchez Cervelló The story told in this book is quixotic; that of the Republican resistance which confronted the military coup in 1936 in spite of the Republic’s isolation and notorious non-intervention policies. The legitimate government of Spain, for all its flaws, represented positive values: democracy, secularism, solidarity, social justice and self-government for historical communities. None of these values could be found on Franco’s side. And when the Civil War ended, whilst the Franquistas supported the Axis, the republicans were committed to the Allied cause. Furthermore, the exiles maintained democratic institutions: the Presidency of the Republic, the Government, the Courts and the Basque Government.

The story of Republican Resistance during the Franco regime. The history of Spain, from the end of the Civil War in 1939 until the first democratic elections in 1977, cannot be properly understood without knowledge of the Republic in exile. There are many books which cover the subject partially, but none that provide an overall vision. This is the first work which gives us the full story, with the objectivity conferred by the passing of the time.

The Second Republic in Exile -1937-1977 Planeta / 576 pages / June 2011

Many of the events which occurred during the Transition have their origins in practically unknown factors —the return of the President of the Catalan Generalitat, Josep Tarradellas, for example, cannot be explained without detailed knowledge about the Republican institutions in exile.

For the first time, not just a chronicle of deaths, but a detailed study of the politics of fear as an essential element of the Francoist state to ensure the population’s submission.

Santiago Vega Sombría Repression is usually considered to be a consequence of the Civil War and the violence caused by both sides during the conflict. But Santiago Vega Sombría, after comprehensive analysis, now offers us a new and very different perspective on the role of repression, seeing it as an essential element of the Francoist state and political system. This is not just a chronicle of the deaths, but an overall study of the different ways in which the politics of fear was used to ensure submission: imprisonment, confiscation of possessions, purges and other means of coercion: from beatings, forcefeeding with castor oil and humiliation, including the forms reserved especially for women, to the symbolic violence exercised in schools, in churches or on the street itself

Santiago Vega Sombría has a PhD in Contemporary History by the Universidad Complutense in Madrid and has published several works on Francoist repression.

Mª Luisa Ferrerós You’re punished without... going out, without your pay, without your mobile phone, without the game console, without computer, without football... We don’t know what else can we make up to make our children fulfil their obligations. It’s the trendy punishment, but most of the parents complain that it does not even work, and they admit that they no longer know what to do to make their children react. Discipline is necessary, but it shouldn’t be based in the child’s fear: it should favour thought as means to know the reason and the reach of the offense, at the same time that he is advised about what is the right action.

Vicente Garrido The news headlines are increasingly regular and alarming: parents attacked by their children, adolescents beating up their teachers, abuse of fellow students at school... What’s going on? Is this a new problem or an old story which is finally being brought to light? Is our society too permissive with young people? Is this an unprecedented crisis in values in the world of education? Are our children copying behaviour learned from an increasingly violent society? José Antonio Marina The objective of education is to develop the talent of individuals and collectives. Management gurus insist tirelessly on the need for talent and there are professionals whose job it is to search it out. We would all like to have talent. We all admire it. The question is, how can we develop it in our boys and girls and ourselves? There are no miraculous short cuts. Nor can one be an ‘instant millionaire’, or ‘learn Chinese in twenty hours’, or achieve any of the other marvellous things promised by deceptive self-help books. Talent is a habit and like all habits, it is difficult to acquire. There are also many kinds of talent. This book attempts to help our children to discover their own.

José Antonio Marina is a philosopher, writer, lecturer, and contributor to several publications. His long career as a researcher has centred on human intelligence and feelings. On many occasions he has said he considers himself a cultural detective. Using the resources of science, he investigates what makes people think, and later explains it by using the resources of literature. In his work, Marina has employed

several literary genres in order to bring the great philosophical questions closer to the great public in an enjoyable and clear manner. If you would like to learn more about his intellectual projects and his literary life, and follow his research, you can visit www. joseantoniomarina.net

This book expounds the theory that knowledge and its associated disciplines (science and innovation policies, political assessment of governments, evaluation of public policies, comprehension of current social transformations and the cognitive competence of regulators) are areas which decide not only economic prosperity but the fundamental quality of democracy.

Daniel Innerarity Rather than a means of accumulating facts, knowledge can be a tool for mutually beneficial coexistence. Its most important function does not consist of reflecting a supposedly objective truth, modifying our perception of exterior reality, but in becoming the most powerful device with which one can create a democratic shared space with fellow human beings. Because our main collective problems are not, as is often claimed, related to will, indecision or immorality; we should actually consider ourselves to be cognitive failures. A failure whose origin lies in poorly organized knowledge about democratic legitimacy.

Policies related to and about knowledge have become matters that concern the democratic citizency in which many different theoretical problems are considered, especially the quality of public space. The Democracy of Knowledge Paidós / 2011 Daniel Innerarity is a professor of Political and Social Philosophy, an “Ikerbasque” researcher at the Universidad del País Vasco and a director of the Institute for Democratic Governance. Savater is our best-selling and more international philosopher. He has been translated into Dutch, Chinese (SimpliďŹ ed and Traditional), German, French, Italian, Greek, Turkish, Portuguese, Danish, Romanian, Korean, Ukranian and Catalan.

Fernando Savater In the middle of the 21st century, religion is provoking passions, moving multitudes and being used as an excuse by terrorists and politicians. Those who have a purely scientiďŹ c view of the world are scandalised, while others consider a belief in some supernatural presence to be vital for us to be able to face life and, even more importantly, death. This is a book about religion, or more accurately, religions: what is belief? What do we believe in, or choose not to believe in? And, what relation do these beliefs share with our search for immorality? The book also explores the concept of truth, the difference between belief and faith, the non-dogmatic paths of the spirit, the political implications of orthodox fanatic fanaticism and the role of religious education in democratic societies.

Religion today: from skepticism to fanaticism, Fernando Savater thinks about God, religion and life after death. A critic to traditional religions and dogmatisms. A lucid book, full with provoking and brilliant ideas. A uent writing, that fascinates all readers, with many references to movies, literature... Savater teaches and delights. Sylvia de Béjar This book is the natural followup of the book Tu sexo es tuyo. The final aim is to help couples meeting again or to help them avoiding sexual problems. The subjects that this book deals with are the pressure for desire, the lack of desire, the differences of desire inside the couple and how to overcome them, rediscovering desire or increasing it... It speaks about everything related to sexual desire and how it affects our lives and our couple relationships, so that we can all find the way to enjoy much more.

A positive reflection on what we can and should do to build a happier life for ourselves. It will give readers a good dose of optimism.

Covadonga O’Shea

For thousands of years, the wisest, most sainted and idealistic people have reflected on the qualities which make a person more human. I simply want to add my own contribution to the work. I would be happy with just waking the people who read this book up to the joy of seeing these virtues and above all the effort of living according to them.”

With these words, Covadonga O’Shea sets out on an optimistic, but realistic, search for lost values, the “endless caverns” in which the further one plunges, the more they discover. Gratefulness, perseverance, faith, prudence, simplicity, responsibility and tolerance, amongst many other things, inspire a positive reflection about what we can and should do to build a happier life for ourselves. Structured into twelve sections – one for each month of the year – the book approaches themes such as love, family, work, culture and friendship; an original almanac in which the prestigious psychiatrist Enrique Rojas offers us his wise advice and provides lucid, intimate company as he guides us through the battles we must wage in our lives to achieve happiness and personal fulfilment.

Enrique Rojas How should we face up to the difficulties and frustrations we come across in our daily lives? Can we learn from our mistakes? How should we adapt to change? No te rindas offers us a friendly and accessible way of dealing with adversity and the doubts and fears that stalk us every day, encouraging us to grow and meet new objectives. • Happiness does not depend on how things are, but on our interpretation of them. • Affective maturity is the ability to give and receive love. • Only those who make sense of their lives can really enjoy existence and completely live up to their potential. • Controlling negative thoughts can help us to improve our mood.

This is a book especially suited for our times of crisis, depression, lack of a will to live, emotional instability, etc.

The author, regardless of different individual beliefs, has focused on the importance faith, meditation and spiritual precepts and values have had for different communities throughout the ages. These systems have managed to place body and mind in harmony and encourage health and well-being.

Bernabé Tierno If sciences such as anthropology, sociology and history have taught us anything it is that the human mind needs a concept of God (or a force of creation) to alleviate the anxiety caused by the unknown. Chance and the chaos of a life that cannot be planned and that, as much as we wish it were otherwise, cannot be controlled, threatens us, damaging our emotional system. Recent scientific studies show that faith in God, participation in rites and fulfilment of religious precepts reduce symptoms of depression and help self-control, improving our neuronal abilities. But, at the same time, our reasoning mind is unable to come to any absolute conclusions about spiritual factors.

With this book, Bernabé Tierno creates a space where the latest scientific research and religious faith coincide, taking us on a revolutionary path towards a new 21st Century spirituality.

Neus Colomer

An educational book on psychology which addresses many of the cases the psychologist encounters in her practice.

How many of us have suffered from psychological mistreatment in our lives? Who doesn’t know someone whose family or work life has been made impossible by someone else? How does society react to so-called “emotional predators” and how can we relate to them without getting hurt? There are people who cause plenty of destruction in the world around them but who are not found out until the damage is clear or cannot be repaired. This is why it is necessary to learn to distance oneself from these hidden enemies and their hurtful actions in order to keep one’s mind healthy and to live a more liberated life.

Mistreatment, both psychological and physical is, unfortunately, still very common today.
