GALLERY WEEKEND BERLIN

N

ow in its fourth year, Gallery Weekend Berlin has become enough of an institution that Bimal Project - authors of the apt synopsis above - has felt compelled to declare independence from it. Bimal self-identify as “an activist, ironic and critical investigation of the new intricate web of cultural possibilities.” At 5.30pm on April 30, they - or perhaps he - invites the 34 participating galleries to send diplomatic envoys to Zimmerstrasse 11, at which point the Project will declare autonomy from the ensuing Weekend. Gallery Weekend Berlin, for its own part, is an attempt to carry on an art fair by other means. It’s not a bad idea: in a city that’s cheap and pleasant, and riddled with galleries (in part for those very reasons), the irrationality of everyone decamping to a convention centre in - say - Brussels seems considerable. By staying put galleries save costs, and so do visitors - you don’t have to pay to get into galleries, even on Gallery Weekend. What is there to look forward to? Visitors will be able to see what Olafur

Eliasson has been up to in his spare time (the Berlin-based artist currently has a show occupying both New York’s PS1 and MoMA). The piece at Neugerriemschneider (Linienstrasse 155) is described as “an incredible new minimalistic sculpture.” Carsten Nicolai, another local artist, will show works in two and three dimensions at Eigen + Art (Augustrasse 29), inspired respectively by Fritz Zwicky and Buckminister Fuller. The galleries on Heidestrasse Haunch of Venison Berlin, AA Galleries, Spielhaus Morrison, et al - are also not on the GWB program. Given that the new and relatively out-of-theway region never really felt annexed to the rest of Berlin’s art circuit, it’s a bit hard to take this seriously as a bid for independence. Their behavior over the past months seems to have been principally affected by Biennial-related forces. On the Biennial’s opening weekend AA Galleries (Heidestrasse 50) - run by the collective Artists Anonymous - opened Jose Maria Cano’s ‘Art is a Waste of Time’; and Haunch.

MEETING WITH THE X-ODUS

It’s a slow morning at the coffee shop in the heart of Kreutzberg. I’m just about to call my editor to, tell him I’ve been stood up, when I hear two familiar voices. Chris and Richardo, two of the major forces behind the artist group X-odus, is waving from the other side of the street. All of a sudden the morning isn’t so quiet anymore. The two young artists, that I met at the launching reception, for the Art2see application, are without any doubt drawing more attention to themselves than the

average Kreuzberger. “Sorry about the delay,” Chris laughs, while the waitress is trying to get through to him that smoking is not allowed inside. “We just had to do a bit of shopping” Richardo adds. Apparently they´ve been buying every available secondhand umbrella in town. “It’s for a project we’re working on,” he explains, while Chris is trying to find a place dump his cigarette.”We really can’t reveal to much about it , but it’s going to be a mix of performance art and exhibition. It involves several

local street artists.” Renarte Eggers and Chris Vogel are some of the youngest members of the (in)famous and rather established artist group. “Well X-odus has been around like forever and when I was asked to team up with them I actually thought they were kidding, I mean, Xodus in my view was kind of Post Punk and New Wave, if you know what I mean… Too eighties, too many black turtlenecks.“

GALLERY OF THE MONTH

fter a trip around in the streets of Berlin and lots of visits in the galleries in town we found this little place which we found very interesting. Galerie Berlin which you can find in Linienstrasse in eastsite of the city, is a very small gallery, but very interesting. The owner is the German-born Peter Gottlieb. He opened the gallery 10 years ago and has the last pasting years seen great progress in people’s interest in art. The range of art is not very big at Gallery Berlin, but as he says, it’s some very special and unique art, which he buys home for his gallery. “The Committee dose’nt need to be large if it is just something interesting.” And there are many interested buyers to the carefully selected pictures in the gallery.

interesting.

It is mostly German artists who exhibit in his gallery and there is a reason. In Berlin there are many large and small galleries with very different and mixed art from across Europe and big parts of the world. Peter Gottlieb wanted to keep Germany in his gallery. He believes that it is important that both the German and Berlin tourist can come in and visit a “real” German gallery as his, now that you are in Berlin. The other kind of galleries can be found all over the world.

ike many other galleries in Berlin, Peter Gottlieb chose to work with Art2See, iphone application. He thinks the application is really interesting and has given him an entirely new and different opportunity to inform his customers about the pictures and artists. By using a strict code on the artwork, customers can through their iphone download info about the pictures. Customers have been very interested in the new application and get in tought with the pictures on a new and interesting way. They are especially pleased with the templed service there following the application,

“

where you can scan the image onto the iphone and see how it would look at home in your own living room. He is not afraid to admit that the gallery visitor numbers have increased slightly after application have appeared. He says that his gallery is slightly hidden and he has never spent so much money on advertisements for the gallery. But now comes the gallery up on googlemap when you turn on the Art2See application and it does that people choose to go visit the gallery without having to look search for it anymore.

He thinks the

application is really interesting...
