General Information
: welcome to :danish+ 2016 ARTISTIC DIRECTOR AT TEATRET GRUPPE 38, BODIL ALLING
: dear guests What a pleasure it is to welcome you – all of you – to the fifth :DANISH+ showcase in Aarhus. In the course of four days, we will present a heap of theatre performances created by highly dedicated, rather low-paid, hardworking artists, who struggle so hard making crazy, poetic, sad and beautiful stories for children and adults. A very warm welcome to all of you.
And a very, very warm welcome to all of our international guests: highly dedicated, rather low paid, very hardworking presenters, who travel all over the world searching thoroughly for the best performing arts for children and adults – just because it is the most important thing to do – to present something that makes your own heart jump. I do hope it will jump a couple of times while you are here. Thank you all for being a part of :DANISH+. Welcome.
Bodil Alling Artistic director at Teatret Gruppe 38

: welcome to denmark THE DANISH MINISTER for CULTURE, BERTEL HAARDER
It’s a great pleasure for me to welcome you to the great city of Aarhus and to the experience of this fifth edition of :DANISH+. It is always inspiring to welcome visitors from abroad, and it’s particularly interesting to get new perspectives from the visitors on the arts and culture of our country. For me, one of the most important tasks as Minister for Culture is to make sure that arts and culture play a vital role in the lives of our children – the global citizens of the future – in a more and more complex world. It is my strong belief that the children must meet the arts in an authentic and sincere way – and more than once! The meeting with arts and culture will enhance their ability to meet the society of tomorrow because art moves us and gives us an understanding of the world we live in.
Furthermore, I am very proud that the Danish children’s theatres are already, in their own way, true citizens of the global world. When they travel around the world with their performances, they foster authentic experiences through their artistic meetings with the children of the world. I hope that you will have an enjoyable and fruitful time at :DANISH+, and I wish you and all the Danish theatre companies a great showcase.
Bertel Haarder Minister for Culture

: welcome to aarhus Mayor of Aarhus, Jacob Bundsgaard
As mayor, it is my great pleasure and privilege to welcome you to the fifth :DANISH+ event, which presents the best of contemporary Danish performing arts for children and young people to theatre professionals from around the world here in the lovely city of Aarhus. Aarhus is a young city. Our many educational institutions, students and creative environments generate life and energy. They’re the pulse of the city. Just like :DANISH+, which is an important event in the annual Aarhus cultural calendar. All this energy will culminate in 2017, when Aarhus will be European Capital of Culture. Under the theme of Rethink, we’ll realize one of the most ambitious cultural projects Denmark has ever seen.
4
We’re calling it Rethink because it’s about rethinking how we do things and discovering new and better paths. Innovation and rethinking are part of Aarhus’ DNA. But Aarhus is also strongly anchored in our past. A past that is our city’s soul and spirit – a core that makes you feel at home no matter how much the city changes. This combination of new and old helps make Aarhus something truly unique. A city known and loved by many. If you’ve visited us before, I’m sure you will notice the many changes that have taken place since the last time you were here. Aarhus is developing. More and more rapidly than ever before. And if this is your first visit to Aarhus, I hope you’ll enjoy all the city has to offer, like our new cultural and community center DOKK1, the new Moesgaard Museum and ARoS Art Museum, where you can experience Olafur Eliasson’s spectacular work
Your rainbow panorama high above the city’s rooftops. I also encourage you to explore the new Aarhus Docklands neighborhood which is shooting up on the waterfront. We’ve certainly been looking forward to welcoming you all. I hope your time in our city is full of great experiences and discoveries. Once again, welcome to Aarhus.
Jacob Bundsgaard Mayor of Aarhus

At first I got scared, but in the end I was so happy I had to cough Marie, 10 years old
It was great. I had time enough to see everything all the time Martin, 8 years old
You become totally relaxed Alexander, 9 years old
In the end it went really fast, about as fast as when Peter gets a punch in the gut Kasper, 10 years old
I think there might have been a man inside the box ... Or maybe it was just a really smart machine! I would really like to have one of my own Nikoline, 8 years old
In the beginning I thought it was just theatre. But that was only in the beginning Christian, 7 years old 7

: M.I.S. – ALL NIGHT LONG DATE: Sunday May 1 st | TIME: 20.05 | VENUE: Bora Bora, Store Sal
16
: About the performance DON GNU are back in hand-knit socks and worn-out sandals on the hunt for that dang thing called ‘self’. Here you meet the dazed and confused; the grown dude who was raised in the 1970’s as a bouncing ball between role models from Dirty Harry to Sesame Street. M.I.S. – All Night Long takes measure of the modern man. What’s up? How is he really doing – underneath those woolen socks and comfy sandals? What happens when night falls? In a hard-boiled mix of jackass stunts, slapstick comedy and raw physicality three men get off the fence; Out of their comfort zone to come to grips with their inner beast, the Latino lover, the pushover, the best buddy – and all the others – in a quiet battle for a man’s right to be himself. The performers take the stage on a backdrop of wacky film projections and live club music that comment and frame the characters’ physical endeavors – all night long!
: About don gnu DON GNU is a choreographic collaboration between the two choreographers and dancers Jannik Elkær and Kristoffer Louis Andrup Pedersen, and the film producer Christoffer Brekne. The company works in the cross field of dance and psychical theatre, using humour and irony as a trademark. Their aim is to create new opportunities for the performing arts, by involving the audience in a more co-creative form, where there is a continuous dialogue that not only relate to the presentations in the theatre. DON GNU has an international profile, and their performances have no language barriers. The company is producing and co-producing in several countries, and have extensive tours in Europe, South Korea, Cuba and Canada. The performance is supported by Statens Kunstfond & Aarhus Kommunes Kulturudviklingspulje.

: About the performance First the word ... “Oops!” A starry sky and a planet. Light and darkness. Earth and water. A cardboard box.
: About de røde heste Since the founding of De Røde Heste in 1990 Claus Mandøe has made performances with a strong emphasis on the story. And during the last 10 years, also with very exquisite animation of both puppets and objects.
And something that grows. And something that barks. And somebody who quarrels. And somebody who holds everything carefully in a hand ... A space flight to a place not far from here.
Goodbye Mr. Muffin – a co-production with Teater Refleksion – is just one example of a performance that has travelled all over the world – and still does! Newer examples are In the beginning was the Beginning and PARADISE – the latter also a co-production with Teater Refleksion.

: About teater2tusind teater2tusind makes small shows, using a minimum of stage design and performs for small audiences.
Mum and Dad go on a surprise visit at their son’s. However, he has no time for natter and fussy cakes, so straight to bed it is. Goodnight and sleep tight.
Focusing on the acting and the music, they try to establish a close contact with the kids. During and after the show each kid should have the feeling: I was part of it, had I not been there, everything would have been different.
But how can anybody sleep tight when the body is itching and tingling from anticipation? When you’re hungry as a wolf or dying from thirst, when it’s too hot or cold or too bright or too dark? There is no mercy: Goodnight! On the spot! “It is this exquisite sense of detail that makes this performance shine ... : THE WAY BACK HOME DATE: Monday May 2nd | TIME: 12.15 | VENUE: Teater Refleksion, Store Sal

: About the performance A puppet performance about conquering the fear of the unknown – based on Oliver Jeffers’ wonderful picture book The Way Back Home. When a boy discovers a single-propeller airplane in his closet, he does what any young adventurer would do: He flies into outer space! Millions of miles from Earth, the plane begins to sputter and quake. The fuel tank is empty, and the boy must execute a daring landing on the moon. But as it turns out, he is not alone up there ... The Way Back Home is a simple yet profound tale about conquering the fear of the unknown. The performance is a co-production between Branar Téatar (IE) and Teater Refleksion (DK). In association with Barboró International Arts Festival for Children. “Oliver Jeffers’ book jumps off the page and into space in this beautiful stage adaptation” H H H H Irish Times “It is puppet theatre at the highest level” Teateravisen
: About BRANAR TÉATAR (IE) Branar Téatar strive for a simple, elegant form of theatre for young people, that achieves intricacy through the creative use of few means. A style that stimulates the ability to imagine and challenge, while opening a dialogue with their audiences and providing a catalyst for education. They spend a long time developing and interrogating their shows to ensure that when children see it, it is the best it can be. Since they began they have made thousands of artistic contacts with children. : About TEATER REFLEKSION Teater Refleksion endeavors to produce theatre of the highest quality – in terms of both content and expression. The use of puppets and animation onstage, with the puppet as principal object and medium, is the company’s defining attribute. The themes of their work, often existential, are explored in a peaceful, concentrated and immediate atmosphere, creating a space in which children and adults can immerse themselves. The goal is to inspire, challenge and encourage the audience to embrace the challenges, that face them in a world, which, at times, can be complicated. This is done by addressing the senses as well as the intellect, and by encouraging an open and curious mind, ready to relate and eager for experience – just as we see it in children.

MishMash International Theatre Company
: ROMEO & JULIET
DATE: Monday May 2nd | TIME: 14.45 | VENUE: Bora Bora, Store Sal
24
: About the performance A unique interpretation of William Shakespeare’s classic Romeo & Juliet in the style of storytelling. Romeo and Juliet – two joyless teenagers – meet at a party and fall madly in love with each other. However, the enmity between their families, the Montagues and Capulets, makes everything very complicated. And as the young lovers strive to hold on to their love, the course of events drive them to the tragic end. The modern approach of MishMash provides an opportunity to re-understand the profundity of Shakespeare’s classic, through the diversity of actors’ skills, which oscillates from corporal mime to acrobatics, from tragic chorus to clown. “The ability to effortlessly express themselves physically is strong: The timing, rhythm and tempo are musical and carefully balanced, the narrative expresses sadness as well as hatred and joy – it is simply well done” “I was surrounded by jubilant teenagers when the show was over” H H H H H Teateravisen
: About mishmash MishMash International Theatre Company was founded in 2012 in Copenhagen, Denmark by four actors from three different countries (Turkey, Sweden and Finland). All four are trained in physical theatre (mask play, storytelling, clown, buffoon, commedia del’arte, corporal mime etc.) at the international physical theatre school Commedia School. Apart from this training, the actors of MishMash also have experience in fields like theatre history, dramaturgy, theatre for children, creative writing, circus arts, music, magic etc. Their broad knowledge and rich variety of skills brings a wide perspective and diverse instruments for creating unique theatre. The main artistic approach of MishMash is to discover the theatrical opportunities through the physical aspect of acting. The theatre intends to create images and stories through their main instrument, which is physicality, rather than the use of décors, props, advance light design etc. Instead they believe movement and improvisation is the base for creations of new and fresh theatre.

“... a beautiful and aesthetic journey into the unknown
Life is full of surprises. Nothing is as we expect it – everything changes and moves. Paper, in all its fragility and diversity, is the protagonist. In this performance origami, music, paper folds and shapes create a story about life’s diverse and chaotic beauty.
: About teaterblik TeaterBLIK is a theatre company founded in 2007 under the artistic leadership of Gertrud Exner. The company aims to establish a platform for innovative theatre for children and adults. Their vision is a strongly visual, sensorial and musical form of expression that combines drama, object theatre, dance and music.
HOV! is a show for small children and their grown ups. It is about life, memories, transformations and the unexpected – through play, object animation and music. The performance was created jointly by all artists involved, with regular visits from children – as mirrors and pointers for the development of our ideas. The work was developed with deep respect for the imaginative capacity and the bid personalities of the small children who are our target audience, and who have their own, undeniable demands for quality and art. The performance is produced by TeaterBLIK with funding from Statens Scenekunstudvalg, Nationalbankens Jubilæumsfond, Wilhelm Hansen Fonden and Kulturelt Samråd Fanø.
world of paper” “Gertrud Exner has the most wonderful ability to influence the youngest children with her curiosity – and her wordless joy” H H H H H Teateravisen
For several years Gertrud Exner has worked in close collaboration with Catherine Sombsthay from Compagnie Médiane (France) and in Denmark with the director Catherine Poher. Those partnerships resulted in several performances for small children: The Way Round, Rain, ANNO ANNI and recently HOV! directed by Lisa Becker. The performances have been touring both in Denmark and abroad, and TeaterBLIK wishes to keep in contact with the international theatre world, through collaborative work, touring performances and artistic exchange.

Nørregaards Teater / Teater O / Black Box Theatre
: THE RACE
DATE: Tuesday May 3rd | TIME: 13.50 | VENUE: Teater Refleksion, Store Sal

: About the performance Hey, my daddy’s name is Paul. He is an astronaut. It actually means that he is working in the space. He has been asked why there are black holes that suck everything in for themselves, so you become totally absorbed. It is just such a place where there is too much of everything at once, and you cannot find your way around in it – or out of it again.
“An imaginative and intelligent performance posing many questions for the modern family, but no answers. What is it about ‘daddy’? Is he really an astronaut, is he great at everything and the world’s best, or are they just playing? Is he in reality just an ordinary office worker, like most people? Is he even there?” “The answers are never given – and that is one of the finest qualities about this little play. It challenges our imagination and our reality. It raises a key question:
My dad and I used to build all sorts of stuff together. Cool things, e.g. a mousetrap that sounded like a cheese. We built such a radio, so that we can talk to each other, no matter how far we are apart. We also built a lot of racing cars, in which we won many races. I am actually the champion of being that girl in the whole world, who won most races overall ... The Race is the story of a family, where daddy is not present. A story about absence and presence, imagination and dreams.
How is dad present in our lives?” Teateravisen

: About the performance A modern theater lecture on digital development and entanglement, exposure and contagion, raised by a man who is a major consumer of digital opportunities, and a shark to surf around the power of information technology. He has a special ability with computers. He can talk to them like you talk with horses; whispering and loving. Certain and commanding. The computers are listening and responding. Obey his every command. But; who controls who?
: About det kommende teater Det Kommende Teater is founded by actor and play writer Søren Zacho Ruby in 2005, and now celebrating 10 years of touring for kids and youngsters. The theatre has always been challenging limits, both technically, poetically and political. 12 productions and thousands of shows later, that is still the purpose.
My Digital Reality – a mockumentary. “An actor who manages to convey a dense and complex text so that it is kept alive with presence and intensity (...) as by changing a little on timing and body language, he makes it crystal clear and very entertaining” H H H H Teateravisen

38
: About the performance Asterions Hus has taken on Shakespeare, and the greatest love story ever told. Out of this comes a moving, fast-paced and humorous performance.
: About asterions hus Asterions Hus is a theatre with many rooms and possibilities. It was founded as a professional theatre in 2003 and consists of Peter Kirk, Tilde Knudsen and Martin Ammundsen.
24 scenes, 24 lifegrips, 24 detours and 24 celebrations of love’s many faces and endings. In their hands, the fantastic text of Shakespeare unfolds into worms dancing, sumo wrestlers in love, and ballet in wheelbarrows. There has never been so much life in playing dead!
Their drive is a huge appetite, joy and amazement over the paradoxes in life – a joy and amazement they wish to communicate through their performances – for children as well as for adults.
“The setup is a concentrate of the unconditional and wonderful first love, unfolding with an expressive power, cash comedy and deeply touching romance” H H H H H Teateravisen “Very, very imaginative, very fast-paced, very funny and very skilled” Christianshavneren
The theatre shares a great love for the big mythological stories, adventures and dramas – because they are wonderful stories and because they are dealing with the unsolvable paradoxes of life. Therefore they have made Romeo&Juliet!, The Iliad, Robin Hood, Babel, Jason ... The theatre strives to make the big, classical history their own and to communicate it honestly to their audience. Asterions Hus has developed a personal and expressive style of performing, where the limits between the realistic and grotesque flow together in a powerful and dancing way that carries the words and story.

: About the performance Thomas is playing tennis round the clock. He is talented and wants to be the best, just like Björn Borg. One day Frederik comes along and Thomas teaches him to play, just for fun. But then Frederik begins to show talent, and he proves to be a little better than Thomas had intended ... What happens when competition and jealousy interfere with friendship? And is it really true that you have to learn to lose before you can win? The performance is for young people aged 10-14 and is created on the basis of the performers’ own experiences as young boys with the noble white sport, at the time when Björn Borg and McEnroe were at the peak of their careers.
“... a real fine performance, cleverly done tennis wise and the acting is top notch. A blessing to see two actors, who are not afraid of the pause, of letting thoughts develop and let the situation determine gesture, facial expressions and lines” H H H H Teateravisen
: About teater patrasket Teater Patrasket is a well-established theatre company from Copenhagen. Performing for young audiences is for them a pledge – or even alibi – to create a theatre that is simple and playful in its form and universal human in its content.
SMASH is a performance playing close to the audience and maintaining the 10-14 year-olds in the intense suspense of the tennis match – in the painful dilemma between friendship and competition. It’s about great ambitions and clipped performances – about sweet victory and difficult defeat.

: About the performance Hot like a furnace Desolate dry A red-hot sand ocean under the blight of the sun Not a tree to provide a cooling shade Such is the desert of Libya Here Androcles stumbles on bare feet in the scorching hot sand The burning rays of the sun prick him like a thousand needles He groans with thirst and begs for water, but no one hears him There is just sand Sand in the eyes sand in the mouth Sand all around ... Androcles is a slave sold to a Roman merchant. When he is accused of theft, he must flee out into the burning sun of the desert to avoid being thrown to the lions. Suddenly, in the middle of the pitch-dark night, a roar sounds so loud that Androcles’ heart freezes. “A beautiful story, it is. And beautifully told by Bodil Alling – no one else in Danish children’s theatre has such a gentle, authoritative and adventurous voice ... Everything – the music, the images and the sounds are attuned to the story” Teateravisen
“... it is not only the room and the unerring authority and presence of Bodil Alling as a narrator who carry this performance, but also a very thorough composition of sound effects and illustrations being projected. In addition, of course – and perhaps most significant – the contact to the audience” Peripeti

: About the performance Experience Claes Bang in the well-received monologue The Evil; The Swedish writer Jan Guillou’s personal and shocking story about the horrible abuses he was exposed to as a child and young man.
“We are constantly in the centre of the story and Bang’s intense and heartfelt performance keeps the audience completely engrossed and very quiet” H H H H H Kirsten Dahl “Julie Wieth’s fine setup and Claes Bang’s outstanding interpretation make the dramatic story come across
The monologue focuses on anatomy of evil – do you become evil by being treated evil? Or can you defy daily punishment and humiliation and maintain goodness? How do you defend yourselves against a superior force without fighting back with unjust means? And can violence in some situations act as revenge and perhaps be excused? The book was released in 1981, and later dramatized and filmed. It is based on Jan Guillou’s experiences as a victim to his father’s violence and Jan’s meeting with the brutal comrade upbringing at the boarding school Solbacka.

Teater Refleksion / De Røde Heste
: paradise
DATE: Wednesday May 4th | TIME: 12.30 | VENUE: Teater Refleksion, Store Sal
46
: About the performance A life-affirming story about an undertaker. Here is what we know about the undertaker: He does what undertakers do, he takes care of the dead, puts them into their coffins and puts the lid on. He doesn’t have a wife. He doesn’t have a dog or a cat. Because the undertaker knows that animals die quite early. It’s not really worth the trouble. But here is what we don’t know about the undertaker: He talks with the dead! And the dead happily talk about all kinds of things. And this thing about Paradise is just something the undertaker makes up in order to comfort a young girl, who died much too early. But maybe it’s true ... maybe Paradise exists? “Breathtaking undertaker poetry” H H H H H Århus Stiftstidende “A quiet and fascinating story about the sad ordinary days of an undertaker” H H H H H Teateravisen “The poetry of children’s theatre can be so strong, that it strikes both kids and adults. Such a performance is PARADISE” Information
: About the theatres Since the founding of De Røde Heste in 1990 Claus Mandøe has made performances with a strong emphasis on the story. And during the last 10 years, also with very exquisite animation of both puppets and objects. Goodbye Mr. Muffin – a co-production with Teater Refleksion – is just one example of a performance that has travelled all over the world – and still does! Newer examples are In the beginning was the Beginning and PARADISE – the latter also a co-production with Teater Refleksion. The Danish Arts Council has supported De Røde Heste on numerous occasions during its existence.
Teater Refleksion endeavors to produce theatre of the highest quality – in terms of both content and expression.
