Pinewood Derby sets race record By Ken O’Maley Sectional Commander
2
012 was one of the fastest races in Central Section Pinewood Derby history. For the first time in several years we had three tracks running, and as a result it took less than 90 minutes to run the first heat of all 160 cars that were entered in this year’s event. We were able to finish one hour ahead of schedule and the pit crew made it run very smoothly. There were some very close races and very unique designs. Altogether, over 200 rangers, family and friends attended this year’s derby, hosted by Outpost 48 at Highway Assembly of God in Fredericksburg. We had a new addition this year as we added the ever popular “Minute to Win It” games to the schedule to get the parents and commanders involved, which proved to be a big success. We had other activities going on as well with the Ranger Kids having their craft time, and the game room set up for those who like to race cars on the X-Box or the Wii. We also had a new addition this year with Bob from Outpost #243 at Abundant Life Assembly of God in Garrisonville bringing his antique race car to show us and sign autographed photos. Competition was strongest this year in the Ranger Kids class with the most entries. There were other large turnouts in the Discovery Ranger class, and in the Open Class, which jumped to over 40 entries. The six fastest cars in each class were awarded trophies, and

workmanship awards were given as well in first through sixth places. There was also a time to recognize our Ranger of the Year competitors and our Gold Medal of Achievement recipients. Rev. Dick Jackson, pastor of Highway Assembly of God, offered a devotion to encourage us to always give our
best to the Lord. Let’s not forget the fantastic food provided by the Girls’ Ministries at Highway Assembly who always put on a great display of food choices. Thanks to all who made this year’s Pinewood Derby the fastest one in a long time and all the workers in and around the pits.

Central Section Pow Wow 2012
‘Stay the Course’ By Ken O’Maley Sectional Commander
T
his year marked a major change for Central Section Pow Wow as we charted a new course to move our largest sectional event of the year to a new location – Camp Red Arrow. Camp Red Arrow is located between Lignum and Stevensburg, Va., at the geographic center of our section. No outpost traveling to the event had a drive longer than two hours. The camp is owned and operated by Children’s Bible Ministries (CBM). During the past 75 years, CBM has expanded from Florida to Alabama, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Tennessee and Virginia. The purpose of this ministry is primarily to reach boys and girls with the Gospel. This is done through the ministry of the 3 C’s: classes (released time and afterschool Bible clubs), summer camps and Bible correspondence lessons. The camp director for Camp Red Arrow, Thomas Burnett, and his team were very excited to have us there. As it turns out, we were the first campers to use the facility, which was to officially open in June, a month following our Pow Wow. CBM only recently purchased Camp Red Arrow. The camp’s history actually dates back to the 1970s when it was used as a training camp by the Washington Redskins football team. In addition to their renovation of some of the

camp’s existing structures, CBM is upgrading the camp to add volleyball, an amphitheater and Frisbee Golf course. We look forward to using this camp in the future for many more Pow Wows, and expanding our events as the camp grows. Twelve outposts attended Pow Wow 2012, and our total attendance was 156 campers and visitors. We were truly blessed with some beautiful weather, fun events and great messages from our speaker for the week Joseph O’Maley. Joseph is a former Royal Ranger for 11 years and recent graduate of Valley Forge Christian College in PA. He is currently a youth pastor in Glassboro, N.J. at Calvary Hill Assembly of God church. Many hearts and lives were touched by his message “Stay the Course” from Joshua 1:9 that week. It always touches my heart when we see men and boys praying for each other at the altar. The events were fun and exciting, starting with the All Star com-
petition along with basketball and whiffle ball tournaments on Friday. Saturday was one of the busiest days as some of the outposts were fine tuning their camps while others were getting ready for competition. See Page 6 for Pow Wow Competition Results
There were 30 to 40 visitors for the weekend, including some Ranger Kids and parents who got to see what a Pow Wow was all about for the first time. All the events were popular. It’s hard to tell what the favorite was, but two of them that always are a lot of fun was the obstacle course and the Seneca Run. Of course, another highlight is the time to pass out the awards on Sunday. There were many awards handed out and a few surprise awards as well, but the most prestigious was the Spirit Cup. Congratulations go to Outpost 215 for winning the cup for 2012. Well deserved!

Ranger Kids Enjoy ‘Old West Day’ By Keith Meeder Ranger Kids Coordinator
O
n Saturday, April 28, the Central Section Ranger Kids saddled up and galloped out to the Hazel River Assembly of God in Rixeyville, Va., to ride the trails, throw a skillet or two, and toss a few horseshoes— all a part of a special “Old West Day” for the youngest of Rangers. In the morning, three teams took turns making a cowboythemed plaque, riding the trail on ponies, and practicing all sorts of bull’s-eye kicking, shooting, throwing, and lobbing. Just before cold and hunger drove them back to the bunkhouse, all three teams competed in a scavenger hunt. Commander Julius Williamson’s team came in first, and the other two teams tied for second. The Rangers took a break at the chuck wagon for hotdogs, chips, apples and grapes—all washed down with a juice pack—
and the boys and girls who dressed up like cowpokes got special cow-pie prizes. Then the teams gathered ‘round and sang a few songs about the prairie, their horses, the great beauty out on the range, and their old girlfriend Clementine. To close the time at the chuck wagon, they listened to the Bible story of David and how he kept his integrity, even when King Saul
pursued him in an unrighteous way. After this, the teams met near the barn for a relay to water the horses. They finished the day with three foot races on the wide-open range. Each Ranger Kid and his friends and family members took home some prizes, cowboy plaques and rich memories of a fun-filled “Old West Day.”
