From the Editors Thanks to many friends and contributors, last January’s launch of Gryo Magazine was a success. I know everyone will enjoy this second issue. This month, we want to remember every single persone from Haiti who lost their lives in the january 12 earthquake. We at gryo magazine send our heartfelt condolences to their families and friends. In time like these, resiliency and compassion is the best way to support one another and move forward. We strongly believe that the Haitians will emerge stronger from this tragedy. We received a list of people who would like their families and friends know that they are OK. Find the list on page 12. This month’s theme is about hope. If this is true you have, of course, set up a distinct Windows account for each user so that everybody can have their own wallpaper, and so that emails and documents are kept separate. This is very well and good, but it is not enough to protect your emails.

Dominican Independence Celebration The Dominican Republic is celebrating 166 Years of Independence by Yovanka Francois

s every year the Dominican Republic celebrates its independence with the Carnival. It is a popular masterpiece that uses the streets as stage and the people as actors and protagonists. This can be appreciated particularly in the attires and disguises, a mixture that changes by regions of element and traditions. 1st, CARNESTOLENDA, coming from Spain that is celebrated before the start of Lent but is more associated with the National Day celebrations on February 27 and August 16. 2nd, Is the Cimarron, that is usually celebrated in the last days Holy Week is originated from African traditions brought by the slave who were transported to the New world.

During the Carnival in Dominican Republic they appear with masks “Los Lechones”, Men disguised with extensive suits of multicolored silk with “Precious Stones” and mirrors all over. Los “Lechones Joyaderos” are
even more decorated, and they carry numerous bells. The scary masks of the classic Lechones are similar to heads of Donald Duck (with long flat beaks), crowned by large bull horns The horns of the “Joyaderos” are very attractive. The use of masks to symbolize spiritual, supernatural and unknown spirit world entities has been used since before recorded history. Africa tribes and Native Americans, among the many ancient peoples, used masks to either depict, get the attention of, or to hide themselves from a higher, or more spiritual being. The natives of the island, the Tainos, and the natives of the surrounding islands had their own festivities long before the arrival of the Spaniards. Dominican Version of Donald Duck - Joyaderos

Their celebrations were called areitos. Mainly they were to commemorate planting and harvest times. They also honored weddings, death and other significant happenings in their lives with these celebrations. They would use body decorations, tattoos, paint, jewelry, and masks during these festivals. With the arrival of the Conquers and the African slaves they brought with them carnival celebrations evolved. The African peoples brought with them their own festivals and celebrations. These contributed the vibrant colors, and some of the traditions of making frightening masks, the musical instruments, dance and songs. They also gave a little humor

to the mix by making fun of themselves and life. It was a way to escape the hardships of life. Making their existence a little easier to bear by making jest of themselves and their circumstances. Amongst all the colors, activity and music in abundance one must always be on high alert for the vejigas/ the inflated bladder weapons and the lรกtigos/ whips. The vejigas are a balloon type weapon dangling at the end of a strap, toted by these wicked creatures. These balls are traditionally made of either cow or pig bladders and filled with air. They are also sometimes made of rubber these days. These are used to hit the people that happen to get in the way. Always aiming
to hit on the lower part of the body but with all the commotion in the street it is a free for all. Originally these balls were used as crowd control to make way for the costumed peoples. It is said that getting hit brings good luck. I think it is more lucky if you can avoid being hit. I suggest staying away from these weapon-bearing creatures because getting hit hurts. Getting wapped in the butt is not pleasant but it is all part of the Carnival experience.

Thanks God because you have given me the opportunity to hear your voice, thanks Lord for permitting me to speak of your mercy, of your kindness and of your love. As many times we say that we are strong, that we are able, and we also agree that God is able, and gives us the power to carry all the loads of this world, the problems, the work, the children, the family, and all things that torment us. And we forget about our body’s health that is temple of the Holy Spirit of God and that we should take care of it and observe at every single moment and not become a machine. Because the machines cannot start or work on their own. We agree that we depend on God; that he is the one that starts the engine of our lives and many times he permits that the machine into which we have converted our body to stop or to break down so that we can listen to the voice of God that speaks to us every time while we never listen. “Do not be afraid because God is with you”

Certainly he carries our illnesses and suffering, our pains and by his pain we are cured. I remember a song that I always like and it was my favorite at the church. My children Winny and Gregory guessed the name of the song before I said what it was, they said “RAIN”. That’s really my favorite one. I always asked the Lord for rain of blessings but I never imagined that he would send me dark clouds and more rainfalls even darker. The clouds arrived in my life when they told me that I have cancer. Thanks to God this came to be a time of reflections for me, a time to rest in the Lord because the machine into which I had converted my body is not mine but the temple of the Holy Spirit of God itself had detained. I was working 17 hours daily plus the hour of transit. At that time I had to put out more work than a single machine could have done; and I was so active during that time that everybody who sees me nowand speaks with me is surprised, not by my illness but because of what I tell them. I feel as those porcelain figurines that has those colors so strong and bright for years, but to obtain those so brilliant colors one must pass it by the oven three or more times with a lot of fire or like the precious stones that one must polish it so many and so many times so that it be shining, that’s how I feel like a precious stone for the Lord and he comes in my strength. If today you feel that nobody listens to you and that nobody worries about you, do not be discourage God is here directing your life. Because, you are not a ROBOT. Abductors ...WENDELL: What the hell is that? BRIAN: Police chopper! Run! Brian quickly stumbles in the intense beam, which then grows brighter, overtaking all detail, turning Brian’s world white. INT. WHITE ROOM Brian regains consciousness in a vast white expanse. He weakly shakes his head, groggy. He begins to investigate his surroundings, and finds that he is seated naked at a plain bench that seems to extend from the wall. With labored effort, he finds he can barely move his muscles. He begins to panic, staring all around the bright room for some clue to his whereabouts. As his eyes adjust to the brightness, several forms of various sizes are discernible. Machinery, like nothing ever seen, all silvery clean, sterile. Brian’s frightened breaths echo back to him. He struggles again to move his arms and legs, but finds they barely respond. An opening appears in the wall across from him, a door slowly sliding upward. Only darkness is evident beyond. Then, a rectangular object like a table slowly travels through the opening. Brian now sees that it is some sort of slab, levitating three feet off the floor. A naked figure lies on it.

Abductors As the slab comes to hover in what must be the middle of the room, Brian sees that the figure is Wendell, who weakly turns his head toward Brian. It is apparent that he is immobilized in the same manner as Brian. Confusion and fear are etched on Wendell’s face, evident in his trembling lips. Brian tries to speak to his friend, but cannot. Brian turns his head sharply toward the entrance, alerted by movement. Three smallish figures in light gray robes enter the room, walking with short efficient strides. Deep voluminous hoods encyst the heads of the figures, concealing their heads. They take positions, two on either side of Wendell, the third one behind his head. Brian becomes agitated, seeing the fear in Wendell’s short, hindered movements. A forth being enters, this one much taller than the others, taller even than Brian or Wendell. It is wearing a black version of the hooded robes adorning the diminutive beings. With long strides, it takes its place near one of the machines on the far side of the room. Finally, a fifth participant enters: little Shelley. Now dressed in a form-fitting unitard of some unknown fabric, she spots Brain. She smiles and waves. Brian hears her thought directed at him. SHELLEY: We’re gonna play a different game now. The three short figures remove their hoods in unison, revealing powder-gray, bulbous heads with tiny mouths and large black eyes.

Abductors One spares Brian an analytical look, as he gasps his fear and disbelief, then returns its attention to Wendell, who is now trying to scream. From the tall one in the black robe, who has kept his hood up, Brian hears a command, alien in both language and sound. One of the figures makes a summoning gesture, which causes one of the machines to trundle over to the being’s side. The being then pulls some retractable object from the machine and leans over Wendell. The one with its back to Brian leans in as well, concealing the activity from Brian. All Brian can see is Wendell’s face, his eyes squinting shut, his teeth clenched in an ugly rictus, his cheeks twitching. A low buzz is heard. Brian hears matter-of-fact chatter in his head, shared observations among the diminutive doctors. An open cylinder a foot wide rises from the floor at the foot of the slab. A moment later, it fills to the top with a black fluid as the creatures continue to hunker over Wendell. The closest being absently tosses a fist-sized wad of flesh in to this cylinder. Wendell is now staring at Brian in absolute, abject terror. The being now steps closer to Wendell’s head, revealing that his stomach is flayed, two cleanly cut flaps laying open to reveal Wendell’s innards. The little surgeons crowd around the incision, pointing and communicating. Shelley rises on tip toes to see what’s inside Wendell. Brian faints.

Abductors (LATER...) Shelley’s innocent laughter brings Brian out of his merciful fugue. She stands before him, smiling. Again she speaks with her mind. SHELLEY: Wake up silly. You’re going to miss the best part. She steps aside to reveal what the little things have done to Wendell. Brian sweats profusely as he digests the sight. Wendell’s amputated legs hang from rods that have descended from the ceiling. His intestines lie strewn across another pair of hooks. Wires and hoses run from Wendell’s heart, lungs, and spleen, connecting back to the machinery. The creatures work around Wendell’s head and neck. One waits with a wire in each hand while the other two manipulate a laser device at the base of Wendell’s neck. Another rod descends from the ceiling, this one ending in a metal cup. Brian begins to weep as he sees the purpose of the cup. The things raise Wendell’s severed head to meet the metal cup, which suctions it firmly. The wires running in through the bottom of Wendell’s neck stump keep him, in a technical sense, alive. Wendell’s head looks at Brian with the eyes of madness, tears streaming down its cheeks. The head weakly murmurs what can only be a prayer for death. Brian shakes his head what little he can, breathing ragged gulps through his fear-choked esophagus.

Abductors One of the things begins to run a glowing bar over the various pieces of Wendell’s body. With each completed wave a crystal clear image of the body part appears on a small screen set into a machine that rests less than a couple of feet from Brian. The things are taking pictures of their atrocities. The last shot, of Wendell’s severed head, glares cruelly in front of Brian’s face. He tries in vain to scoot away from the image. Shelley remembers Brian and goes to him. SHELLEY: Don’t cry. We’ll keep his mind alive for a while, to study. I’ll play with him when I can. We can’t play with you tonight, but don’t worry. We will later. Shelley glances back at her fellow aliens. SHELLEY: They can find you, just like they found me tonight. Anywhere you go, they’ll find you. I’ll see you again soon, okay? Brian’s face contorts into a mask of agonized terror. He tries once more to speak, but manages only a brief squeak. Wendell’s head rises out of sight into the ceiling. The little creatures begin fastidiously disposing of the leftover organs and limbs in the black acid. The tall, black-clad being finally leaves its post across the room, gliding like a dense shadow toward Brian. It raises a limb toward Brian’s face. Brian’s world becomes black. INT. DR. DELGADO’S OFFICE- NIGHT Brian’s voice, anguished, exhausted, trails off on the tape. BRIAN (over the speaker): And then I was back at the clearing...and Wendell was gone...

Brian’s speech gives way to crying and gibberish. Dr. Hatch turns off the recorder and stares at Dr. Delgado, visibly upset. DR. DELGADO: Clearly, he’s deeply disturbed. DR. HATCH: There’s...more. I checked on this Wendell Pitts. He’s been missing since March of last year. There was a rash of unsolved kidnappings that ceased around that time. DR. DELGADO: Brian Ripple must have killed him. Surely you don’t believe this alien abduction story? It’s a classic guilt delusion. DR. HATCH: Perhaps. Either way, I think we should call the police. Delgado’s desk phone rings. DR. DELGADO: Hello?...Yes...Just a moment. gryo magazine

Abductors She hands the phone over to Hatch. HATCH: Hello? Nurse Carlton, what’s the problem?...Yes... You’re sure...all right. Lock down the ward, and search all the sanitation closets. I’ll be there in a moment. Hatch hangs up the phone and stands. DELGADO: What is it? HATCH: Brian Ripple is missing. DELGADO: He’s dangerous! We’d better alert the police. HATCH: Of course. But he was sedated and locked in his room over two hours ago. There’s no way out, as you know. Delgado looks at him, perplexed. In no hurry, Hatch rises. HATCH: Good evening, Dr. Delgado. Sleep well.
