GS1 SUPPLY CHAIN WEEK CONSUMER ELECTRONICS INDUSTRY SYDNEY: THURSDAY 16TH SEPTEMBER 2010

INDUSTRY BACKGROUND Consumer electronics include electronic equipment intended for everyday use based on the following four categories: Domestic Appliances, Hi-Tech Multimedia, IT & Telecoms, Media & Home Entertainment Consumer Electronics Sector Characteristics: • Lean and global supply chain management is a crucial success factor in an increasingly competitive business environment characterised by high cost pressure, global sourcing and long lead and transportation times. • As transport goods move through multiple parties (e.g. manufacturers, logistics service providers, retailers). It is beneficial for all players involved to use the same identification and communication standards along the supply chain. • Consumer electronic products typically have a short life cycle, therefore providing rich product data in high quality and in a standardised way is crucial for successful sales processes. • Technical and sales related information is required for consumer electronics products at point of sale (POS).

CEWAG GLOBAL UPDATE •

The Product Central Master Data Business Needs Group (PCMD BNG) has been formed. Their goal is the development of a standard with product specific attributes and a classification system for the CE industry.

THE GROUP HAS IDENTIFIED THAT IT NEEDS: • To define rich data attributes, for the use of product data such as listing, logistics, marketing, sales, on shelf information. • The ability to track and trace at item/component level providing accurate and up to date product information. • Increased availability of relevant product information at low cost to retailers and consumers. • All supply chain partners identifying and describing products in the same way to reduce costs, data errors and inconsistencies. • Efficient way of collecting master data, e.g. - in order to keep information automatically up to day (no complicated manual work) - for marketing purposes and consumer information, e.g. for product comparisons on retailers websites. •

SOME OF THE GLOBAL PARTICIPANTS: Best Buy, Media-Saturn, Panasonic, Sony Corporation, Sony Electronics Inc., Toshiba Corporation, Toshiba Logistics Corporation, Hewlett-Packard
