In 1974, GS1 introduced barcodes which greatly enhanced the efficiency, accuracy and ease of the checkout process. Later In 1989, GS1 Hong Kong was founded to introduce the revolutionary benefits of barcodes to local retail enterprises. Different business sectors including retail, logistics and healthcare have seen increased productivity and improved customer experience ever since.

EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) is an electronic communication system that provides standards for different companies to exchange data such as orders, invoices via electronic means. In 1995, GS1 Hong Kong began ezTRADE, an EDI platform for automatic identification and communication. In 1998, web-based ezTRADE was established to meet the needs of SMEs. In 2008, ezTRADE rolled out its services in Mainland China. GS1 Hong Kong successfully extended ezTRADE to the healthcare sector.

The Efficient Consumer Response (ECR) Hong Kong was established in 1996 under the auspices of GS1 Hong Kong to represent retailers, manufacturers and distributors. It created ECR Scorecard in 1999 in Hong Kong to facilitate corporate benchmarking locally and globally and having been adopted by ECR Asia Pacific has become recognised worldwide.

A research project was undertaken by the Auto-ID Centre at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1999 to develop a technology solution to automatically identify, track and manage objects. Through this project, the Electronic Product Code (EPC) standard was successfully developed. EPC Information Services (EPCIS), an EPCglobal standard designed to enable EPC-related data sharing, was also formulated with the Internet as a backbone.

It developed the Supply Chain Maturity Reference Model which defined a roadmap for SMEs to achieve SCM best practices. The Shelf-life Cycle Study was conducted in 2008 to establish a common industry standard.

GS1 Hong Kong introduced the “Electronic Product Code Awareness & Knowledge Transfer Programme” with support from the Innovation &Technology Commission of the HKSAR Government in 2004 to promote local adoption of EPC/RFID standards.

Industries need to respond to the strong demand for omni-channel capabilities and adopt common standards to drive the seamless integration of web-ready products, big data analytics, inventory accuracy and logistics fulfilment. In the past two decades, GS1 Hong Kong has launched various services such as product information repository BarcodePlus, visibility and traceability solution ezTRACK to help corporate members fulfil critical technology requirements.

ECR Hong Kong held the 8th ECR Asia Conference in 2005 and GS1 Hong Kong is honoured to host the Conference in 2015.

In 2008, ezTRACK, a globalised track-and-trace platform that enables enterprises to gain real-time visibility of product information was established. It has greatly improved the connectivity between Hong Kong and other countries and regions.

With the boom of e-commerce and omni-channel retailing, GTIN (Global Trade Item Number), used for identifying types of products at any packaging level, has started to drive the transformation of the retail landscape. GS1 Hong Kong will remain committed, as always, to help the retail industry leverage on the infinite possibilities and benefits that barcodes bring.

Around 2,000 companies have subscribed to ezTRADE with more than 30 million EDI transactions being processed through the platform annually. A mobile app version will commence in 2015. 電子數據聯通 (EDI) 提供劃一標準，讓企業間可以進行各種電子文件交換，例如訂單、發票、貨運通知 等。早於1995年，GS1 Hong Kong便推出通商易，提供一個EDI平台進行自動識別及通訊。其後於 1998年，為香港的中小企推出網上版本，並於2008年在中國內地推出。通商易亦成功延伸至醫護行業， 備受採納。 目前有約2,000家中港企業申請了通商易的服務，每年處理的電子數據聯通交易宗數高達3,000萬宗。而 通商易正開發的手機應用程式將於2015年推出。

Hong Kong Internet of Things Centre of Excellence was set up in 2013 to showcase and promote “smart city” among the public and the industry.
