Unit 14 curiously and deliberately engages with the tumultuous and chaotic city to draw-out the hidden practices and codes that define it through everyday transactions. We call on the discipline of architecture to both reveal these unfathomable actions and to spatially speculate on ways to use these practices to work towards a bolder, more deliberate city. We exploit this particular moment of Johannesburg’s history to find our way. This selected body of work seeks to be both declaratory and reflective.

CHOREOGRAPHY OF A CRIME A sequential movement pattern is mapped of a prolific smash-andgrab site, centred around a bus rapid transport depot infrastructure in the CBD of Johannesburg. Traffic lights provide cadence for restricted motorists, and raised edges of the station provide blindspots in which opportunists hide. A signalling system exists between two opportunists on either side of the station, active in plain site between shops and side-walk activities.
