PROJECT 1: FETISH MANIFESTO This project forms a means of introducing each other to ourselves. Through this project you will be able to express where your core skills lay in terms of mediums and hint as to where your architectural (or personal) interest lay. You will be using architectural /spatial fragments as part of your composition. This can be from any source that you feel best captures your experiences - Instagram, iPhoto Album, Facebook, etc. Through understanding these we are able to align your personal story to Unit framework. The exercise also test your ability to produce with your intuition and do so in a rapid manner - 60min per drawing. To allow you to reect on your own means of working and process, you will be asked to record yourself during the AcT 3. making of this project. This outcome will be your portrait for the year and will be how you will be remembered (or forgotten). DURATION: 1 Week (Individual) OUTPUT: 5 x A3 Square format Illustrations (mixed media), One per day (in rapid succession) , 2min stop-frame video of your process. KEY WORDS: 60min drawings, Super-skills, Reection, POSTSCRIPT: Fetish Manifesto was our first project of this studio. The aims were to introduce ourselves to each other through skills and mediums we are most comfortable with. Using architectural and spatial references from our past, a self portrait was produced of how we see ourselves and would like to be understood. The exercises tested our ability to produce quickly, working AcT 4. with our intuition and instincts. Each drawing was limited to no more than 60minutes. Over five days, one drawing (or artefact) UNIT 14 / STUDIO JOURNAL per day wasSchool produced. INTRODUCTION Adrian lauhoud’s succinctly elaborates on post traumatic urbanism as “…the evidence of the aftermath – the remains of an event that are missing. How does a system make sense of an experience that exceeds its capacity for integration? Since recognition is only ever retroactive, the process of reintegrating the event, of sense-making, begins when we start to sift through the evidence, to build a plausible story, to construct a narrative and develop the coordinates of a new experiential landscape. Slowly repetition returns to weave its supportive tissue, and new futures come to replace old ones. Trauma is the drama in which both history and the future are at stake, held in a suspended crisis; the cards have been thrown up in the air but they have not yet landed. Trauma stages the point at which the system must reimagine itself or perish.” (Architectural Digest, 2010) The sudden and extreme forces which coalesce in post-1994 Johannesburg makes this young city an opportunistic one for our exploration. We are interested in the consequence of emergent socioeconomic practices in shaping our context and the role of architecture in influencing urban trajectories. Johannesburg continues to hold the raw markings of mans crude economic pursuits upon its landscape lending insightful evidence upon which to draw speculations. This year, the Unit will align with this uncompromising force of Enterprise - the powerful UNIT 14 / STUDIO JOURNAL

means through which our cities propels and produces itself. Enterprise presents itself acutely through human need and greed throughout diverse geographies allowing us to borrow, expropriate and reimagine radical other alternatives using local and established logics. Three exemplary post-apartheid geographies (township, suburb, inner city) are identified to explore and exploit emergent practices, agencies and spaces. logics and practice are transplanted to antagonise, exaggerate and test radical alternative possibilities. This Unit concerns itself with ‘how’ we go about producing an equally extraordinary architecture that relates to the extra-ordinary time we are in. Using post-1994 Johannesburg as a laboratory we aim towards an architecture that establishes a reciprocity to place and people -in so doing becoming worthy artefacts of our time as David Goldblatt observes through his seminal book - Structures of Things Then “ Held in its bricks and mortar was an intricate web of ideas and values which constituted the beliefs of this community regarding their relationship not only to the ineffable, but also to themselves within the world they inhabited. it was, indeed, their self-image made manifest. Gradually i came to see structures and their form as expressions of value.”

University of Johannesburg. Graduate School of Architecture. Unit 14 Studio Journal 2016. Edition 01.

The first quarter comprises short exercises and field trips to develop a means of reading and representing socio-spatial logics of these sites which will be decoded to produce a ‘lexicon of Emergent Spatialities’. The lexicon forms the empirical basis to make informed speculations towards a city formation that honours local practices through a responsive and speculative architecture. The second quarter introduces technical, methodological and representational inputs to test spatial translation through short design projects. You will be designing an architectural strategy that employs lessons learnt through these investigations to create a Mall for Johannesburg (Extra-ordinary Architecture of Enterprise) SEMESTEr 1 (QUArTEr 1 AnD QUArTEr 2) Quarter 1 08 February - 25 March (Weeks 1-7) AcT 1. UNIT FOURTEEN 2016

We are a young and curious bunch, both in unit leaders and in student make-up. As a unit our efforts are focused on Johannesburg, yet only three of us call this city our place of origin. Our fresh eyes bring a unique perspective to the readings of this city’s particularities and percularities. We are the class of 2016.

This is a two part project. The purpose of it is to sensitise you to your own habitat (one that you are most familiar). You will need to observe, interpret and document it in a manner that best communicates its value, operaton and meaning. You will need to show how the space is occupied and how it supports life. Attention will be drawn to the various elements that enable its workings, such as furntiure, time, people, light, etc. This will be presented to your colleagues annonomously - you will be paired based on how well the representation and interpretation aligns . The second part of the studio will ask that you take your partners home and assert your own desires. fantasies and obsessions onto - a place of your wildest dreams. You need to embrace or rejct their history and make a case for it. The idea of architecture as inherited infrastructure will be exlpored.

Most Ethiopian retailers in Jeppe are pooling some of their financial risk through the use of the customary practice of Ekub, a voluntary rotating credit and savings scheme whose members make regular payments into a pooled pot and from which each member draws money in turn.

Stores in this building located at the confluence of two narrow corridors that extendthrough two recently interlinked buildings. Nine shops front onto the shorter corridor .Shops and stalls are found in the basement and on the first floor. Altogether there are 162 retail outlets occupythe ing just 3 floors of these 2 contiguous building

5 These retail spaces are a combination of the characteristics of Jeppe-style trading with small spaces offering shopping on several levels and the characteristics of suburban malls with wide passageways, high-intensity lighting, controlled access points and inward-facing shops.

2

The profit margins per item in Jeppe are exceptionally low. Shopkeepers talk of profits of R1.00 and R1.50 on most items.

4

Cubicle shops that occupy no more than 2 m 2 are rented out at amounts of R2000 per square metre, compared with a rental level in the body of the inner city that is under R180 per square metre

Multiple relations of trade exist between Chinese suppliers and Ethiopian traders in Johannesburg. It is a dense and intimate economic relationship centred on commodities being sourced from China by Chinese wholesalers and directed to Ethiopian traders.

This is a two-part studio. The first is an intense one-week studio session with an artist. Artist have special ability to produce works with uncompromised rigor where ideas are seldom diluted. We will be teaming up with a Johannesburg conceptual artist - Stephen Hobbs to get an insight on how this is done. We will be working from his studio for 5 consecutive days producing a cumilative series of artefacts that focus on the idea of making your ideas tangible - and having some correspondence between your idea and artefact. Your ideas are expected to be exagerated outcomes that are wild, speculative, playful through a focused and highly productive session in-studio. The second part will focus on translating this ideas into more refined outcomes towards a structure or device that we can occupy and possibly construct.

The real wolrd is unforgiving. there are legal, financial, time, policy, by-law and stakeholder constraints that have the potential to undermine projects. The purpose of this studio is to bring awareness to the very real forces that are present in the current reality. here we choose to ficus specifically around issues of property, markets, ownership, financing. You will observe how property and the economies for different geographies have vastly different logics - yet work none-theless for their constituents. Through understanding some fundamental drivers, you will be better placed to manipulate these for your own agenda. We would like to see how you take fundamental realities and work with them to realise audacious and radical other proposals.

THE HATCH AND COUNTER ARE REACHED VIA SCAFFOLDING. (PERPETUAL COSTRUCTION) A SUBSTREET IS CREATED ABOVE THE SIDEWALK, THIS COULD LEND TO FUTURE SHOPS ALONG THIS SUBSTREET.

ADVERTISEMENTS ARE ADDED TO THE EXISTING STRUCTURE AND MUSIC IS PLAYED TO LURE CUSTOMERS. (PIRATE BROADCAST)

THE APARTMENT IS SUB-LET TO A FRIEND OF THE TENANT WITH THE INTENT TO OPERATE A FAST FOOD OUTLET.

A HOLE IS PUNCHED THROUGH THE WALL TO SERVE AS A HATCH AND COUNTER FOR SERVING FOOD.

AMSDEK SCRUTINIZES TENANTS EXTENSIVELY, BUT ALLOW ENANTS TO SUB-LET WITH MUCH LESS SCRUTINY. A POLITICALLY CONNECTED PERSON RENTS A FIRST FLOOR APARTMENT.

RESERVED PARKING SPACES ARE ALLOCATED TO THE RENTED APARTMENTS. THE PARKING SPACES ARE USED FOR THE PREPARATION OF COW HEADS.

THE TENANTS INFLUENCE ALLOWS THEM TO BEND THE RULES.

A PARTITION WALL SEPERATES THE TENANT FROM THE SUB-LET FAST FOOD SHOP.
