WELCOME DEAR GIRL SCOUT VOLUNTEER – Thank you for choosing to make a difference in the lives of girls. As you look through Program at a Glance and consider the many program opportunities for your troop, I hope you will remember that YOU make the biggest difference in the lives of the girls in your troop. The council strives to provide many program opportunities which will help our girls, and the adults who serve them, learn new things and have fun. However, please don’t underestimate the power of your role and the impact of your ongoing, loving and caring relationship on them. I hope you and your troop or group have fun this year and enjoy participating in many of the programs outlined in this publication. Thank you so much for all that you do for girls.

Tamara Woodbury CEO, GSACPC

INTRODUCTION EMPOWERING GIRLS TO THRIVE! In Girl Scouts, girls discover the fun, friendship, and power of girls together. Girls grow courageous and strong through a wide variety of enriching experiences, such as field trips, skill-building sports clinics, community service projects, cultural exchanges, and outdoor experiences. Grounded by the Girl Scout Promise and Law, Girl Scouting helps girls develop their full individual potential; relate to others with increasing understanding, skill, and respect; develop values to guide their actions and provide the foundation for sound decision making; and contribute to the improvement of society through their abilities, leadership skills, and cooperation with others. The following program information has been carefully developed to address important items relevant to all council sponsored/community partnership programs and events offered by Girl Scouts–Arizona Cactus-Pine Council. Si desea información en español sobre los programas y eventos que aparecen en este manual, favor de comunicarse al 602 452-7011 y pregunte por una de nuestras representantes bilingües.

FOCUS ON LEADERSHIP WHAT IS THE GIRL SCOUT LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE? The Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) is girl-driven program, reflecting the ever-changing needs and interests of girls in grades K-12. Via a combination of hands-on learning opportunities, earning Girl Scout recognitions and service awards, Girl Scouts develop their skills to the fullest potential. Girl Scout Journeys and Girl Scout badges combine fun with hands-on activities to encourage girls to Discover, Connect and Take Action.

OUTCOME BASED PROGRAMMING To ensure that our program offerings meet established outcome measurements, all council events are created using the GSLE model. The following links will help you to learn more about the GSLE. »» GSLE orientation and earned recognitions – http://girlscouts.org/gsle »» Journey Map – www.girlscouts.org/program/journeys/maps »» Girl Scout earned recognition and Journey requirements – http://girlscouts.org/program/gs_central GIRL SCOUT JOURNEY CONNECTIONS TO STATE CURRICULUM STANDARDS Did you know the content of our current journey series have been correlated by grade to the Health & PE, Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies standards for all 50 states, plus the District of Columbia? Visit www.girlscouts.org/en/adults/educators/curriculum-standards.html to find out how the journeys support curriculum standards.

GRADE LEVELS AND PROGRESSION IN GIRL SCOUTING All activities are categorized by grade levels. By offering a program to targeted grade levels, the council is modeling its commitment to progression in Girl Scout programs. If your troop is interested in an activity limited to older grade levels, please encourage the girls to view this as something special to look forward to rather than as an opportunity denied. Successful council-sponsored programs are likely to be refined and repeated in coming years. Girls will benefit the most from these programs when they reach the appropriate Girl Scout level. Visit www.girlscouts.org/en/our-program/grade-levels.html for more information on defined grade levels. GIRL SCOUT GRADE LEVELS Girl Scout Daisy - grades K-1

Girl Scout Cadette - grades 6-8

Girl Scout Brownie - grades 2-3

Girl Scout Senior - grades 9-10

Girl Scout Junior - grades 4-5

Girl Scout Ambassador - grades 11-12

GIRL SCOUT NATIONAL CONTENT AREAS To help pave the way for girls learning to thrive, our Girl Scout programs are listed by four areas of focus. STEM (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATH) The importance of STEM is increasing in our world and everything we do. Those who are STEM-literate will lead the way in making our world a better place. As a parent and/or troop leader, you play a crucial role in your girls’ interest in STEM. Girl Scouts supports girls, parent, and troop leaders by providing girls with unique opportunities to become innovators, problem-solvers, and experimenters. Girl Scouts offer a wide range of STEM programs, from Girl Scout Badge/Journey work to partnerships with local STEM organizations, educational institutions, and experienced STEM professionals. Girls can progress over time from “check it out” type programs to in-depth skill development and career exploration opportunities. We provide access to positive female mentors in the field, and hands-on experience with current technologies in a fun, collaborative learning environment. We work to ensure parents and leaders learn how to support girls as they get excited about STEM, and offer guidance on where to obtain resources for their girls.

OUTDOOR (CAMP, ARCHERY, HORSEBACK RIDING, HIKING, ENVIRONMENTAL ED, CANOEING) Girl Scouts and the out-of-doors go together like marshmallows and chocolate roasted over the fire. For over 100 years girls have been learning about their natural environment through Girl Scouting. In a recent study conducted by the Girl Scout Research Institute among 2,000 Girl Scout Alumnae, 49% described “camping trips” as one of the most positive aspects of their Girl Scout experience, just behind “fun” and “friendships with Girl Scouts”. The research shows that girls really enjoy outdoor activities. They talk about their experiences as being “hard fun.” Whether it’s on a lake, zip line or tent, girls love a challenge, especially when it’s outdoors. Our council has a deep commitment to outdoor programs. Girls are offered an abundance of options to learn and thrive in the greater outdoors. Girls are invited to learn how to canoe, hike/camp in our state/national parks, take on a leadership role at camp as a Counselor-in-Training (CIT), or enjoy a true outdoor adventure at one of our camps!

LIFE SKILLS (SPORTS, FAITH, TRAVEL, HEALTHY MIND AND BODY) The term ‘Life Skills’ refers to the skills girls need to make the most out of life. Life skills are usually associated with managing and living a better quality of life. They help girls to accomplish their ambitions and live to their full potential. Via a variety of programs, earned recognitions and service to our community, Girl Scouting offers girl’s fun, learning opportunities to gain practical life skills.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP (FINANCIAL STEWARDSHIP, PRODUCT SALES) The world’s current economic challenges have made one thing clear: Financial literacy skills matter now more than ever. However, there’s a gap when it comes to teaching young people the skills they need. Girl Scouts has the financial empowerment program to fill that gap. We offer all girls—from kindergartners to high school seniors—the opportunity to build their business savvy and hone their financial literacy skills. They can do this through our council-sponsored and/or community partnership programs, fall sale and, of course, through the Girl Scout Cookie Program!

THE MANY FACES OF COUNCIL PROGRAM Council-sponsored programs, events and community partnership opportunities are offered to troops and individual girl/adult members. They include earning established Girl Scout recognitions, community service opportunities, awards and leadership trainings to help Girl Scouts to grow and thrive.

6

GIRL SCOUTS–ARIZONA CACTUS-PINE COUNCIL, INC.

The council’s goal is to serve all girls and support adult leadership throughout the council’s jurisdiction. Councilsponsored programs are intended to supplement troop/group-initiated programs, not replace them. It is neither appropriate nor possible for the council to offer enough programs for troops/groups to rely on for all of their activities. COUNCIL/COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP SPONSORED PROGRAM/EVENTS While all programs are council-sponsored, some are designed and implemented by council staff and others are designed and implemented by community partners working closely with council staff to ensure their programs are aligned with the GSLE. Registration for these programs/events is processed via the council registration system. SERVICE UNIT SPONSORED PROGRAM/EVENTS For many troops, the majority of activities are organized at the service unit level. Troops will plan a joint activity with another troop. In addition, program is also offered by service unit program teams each year for their entire service unit. Check in with your event planning service unit team to discover opportunities offered locally in your service unit area. Registration for these programs/events is processed via the service unit. OUTSIDE VENDOR PARTNERSHIP SPONSORED PROGRAM/EVENTS Troops/IGM’s may participate in programs by outside vendor community partners. The partnerships are vetted by council staff, and augment council sponsored program by offering learning opportunities covering a wide array of interests. These programs generally meet GSLE guidelines and arrangements to attend must be made by troop/IGM leadership. Registration for these programs/events is processed via the community partner registration system. For a list of these programs/events, visit www.girlscoutsaz.org/more-stuff-to-do.

TRAVEL OPPORTUNITIES IN GIRL SCOUTING DESTINATIONS FOR GIRLS There’s a travel adventure waiting for you! Girls may view and apply for various out-of-state adventure trips by visiting http://forgirls.girlscouts.org/travel. NOTE: Completed GSUSA Destinations for Girls applications must be forwarded to GSACPC no later than the third Friday of November for processing. GIRL SCOUTS OF THE USA AND WAGGGS (World Association of Girl Scouts and Girl Guides) In addition to the program opportunities offered by our council, the Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) and the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) offers troops/groups and teen Girl Scouts many other opportunities. For the latest information on program updates, special online only patch programs and world-wide travel opportunities, visit www.girlscouts.org/en/about-girl-scouts/global.html.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN GIRL SCOUT PROGRAM Did you know that girls do not have to be in a troop/group to enjoy the Girl Scout Experience? ALL programs offered by our council are open to participation by girls as part of a troop or by individual Girl Scout members with guardian chaperones. INDIVIDUAL GIRL MEMBERS Girl Scouts who are registered individually and not affiliated with a troop/group. Why would a girl choose to be an IGM? »» Her schedule is too busy to participate in a troop. »» There is no troop available in her area. Start as an IGM and transfer to a troop later! »» Prefers to work alone on Girl Scout earned recognitions and awards. How to become an IGM: »» Parent of an individual girl in Kindergarten through 12th grade complete the online membership form and pay the $15 annual registration fee (membership dues assistance is available). BRING A FRIEND Girl Scout program is the perfect way to introduce other girls to Girl Scouting. We have many programs where girls can participate without being a registered member. Girl Scout Day at the Phoenix Zoo and World Thinking Day are just a few examples. Check the program description to find out if you can bring a friend! ADULT PARTICIPATION AT GIRL SCOUT PROGRAM EVENTS Girl Scouting is for girls. All council-sponsored programs are designed for girls. When a program has been designated for family participation, the program description will read “Girl Scouts and Family”. To ensure a quality girl experience, the number of adult participants permitted to attend is limited to the capacity needed for carpooling and to meet Safety Activity Checkpoint guidelines for the number of girls attending the event. In most cases, council programs fill to capacity. If every troop registering for a program brought just one or two extra adults, this could add up to enough extra adults to prematurely fill the program and prevent another

entire troop from being able to participate. If you have a number of parents who are interested in accompanying your troop, there are many other ways for them to be involved. You might suggest they drive a carpool and accompany the troop on your next outing, prepare a special activity for the girls, host a troop meeting, or help plan an event designed for parent or family participation. FATHERS AND FATHER FIGURES Girl Scouts is all about girls, right? Absolutely! And girls need healthy relationships with their fathers and father figures to be their best. There is a growing body of research that confirms what we’ve always known, the relationship a girl has with her father and father figures directly impacts how she develops. Specifically, how she solves problems, forms relationships with others, and how she thinks about her future, especially her career. We want to support girls in strengthening their relationship with their dads, step-dads, uncles, grandfathers and the men who play a significant role in their development. Many of the programs you find are great opportunities for fathers and daughters to spend time, learn and have fun together. We even have some events that are specifically designed for fathers and daughters. The many fathers we talk with agree that Girl Scout program is the perfect place to build trust, learn new skills and just have fun with the important girls in their life. So find a program today, and sign up!

This training guides girls to learn: the difference between a community service project and a Silver Award take action project, ideas on how to raise the bar and address the root cause of problems, how to make a Silver Award project measurable, how sustainability fits into the Silver Award, what you need to submit to the council, recognition offered by the council.

All religious recognitions have been developed by the religious groups themselves, not by the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. The “Interfaith Quick Reference Chart” lists all the different religious programs currently available and who to contact for more information. GSUSA recognizes these programs and allows the recognition insignia to be worn on the official uniform. Please visit the Council Shop for a copy of the “interfaith Quick Reference Chart” and to obtain the religious curriculum booklets.
