THE ADVENTURE AWAITS! DISCOVER YOU! Girl Scout Camp is a place to make new friends, try new things, and challenge yourself. Discover YOU while exploring the outdoors and challenging yourself in new ways. It’s an opportunity to be bold, be brave, and unlock your endless potential.

Our unique girl-led programming helps girls develop a positive self-image, as well as leadership and social skills they’ll use for the rest of their lives. Camp helps girls build courage, confidence, and character by connecting with others and their natural environment. Registration for all camp sessions is FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED. We recommend booking as soon as possible to secure a place in your favorite camp sessions. Early-bird registration is available to all returning campers since 2017. An early-bird registration code will be emailed to contacts on file in advance of the early-bird registration opening, Jan. 22 at midnight. Registration opens to first-time campers Feb. 5 at midnight. See page 6 for more details. We’ll see you there!

NOT A GIRL SCOUT? NOT A PROBLEM!

All girls are invited to register for Girl Scout Camp. We add the $35 Girl Scout membership fee to your camp session registration total. Campers must have a membership for insurance coverage. Girl Scout membership is valid through May 1, 2020 to Sept. 30, 2021. This means campers can also participate in any Girl Scout activities they’d like during this time, without paying additional member fees! For more information about year-round Girl Scout opportunities, visit girlscoutsaz.org/activities.

Girl Scouts–Arizona Cactus-Pine Council (GSACPC) values and honors diversity, equity and inclusion among its staff, board, donors, girls, and adult volunteers and members. The Girl Scout Movement was founded to help all girls reach their full potential by creating a safe place for girls to foster their individual growth, character, and self-sufficiency and leadership. GSACPC values these founding principles and is committed to upholding them. GSACPC will not deny membership to staff, board, donors, girl, and adult members or volunteers because of race, color, ethnicity, religious or spiritual beliefs, age, national origin, socioeconomic status, documentation status, disability, gender identity or sexual orientation.

ELIZABETH “AURORA” JACOVINO

EVELYN “SPARKIE” TORREZ-MARTINEZ

CAMP DIRECTOR

I spent my first week at camp the summer after third grade. My friends and I chose swimming as one of our daily activities. The first day, I put on my favorite Little Mermaid swimsuit and marched with confidence straight to the pond for our swim test - and froze when I got there. The pond was dark and murky and nothing like the city pool near my house. I spent the next four days in the shallows with my counselor. My friends took turns hanging out with me so I wouldn’t feel left out. By day four, my counselor convinced me to put my face in the water and try snorkeling. I had such a blast. I decided to take the swim test on the last day. The lifeguards cleared the water while I swam out to the floating dock and back. I expected the other campers to be impatient, but they were supportive and cheered me on from the dock. I learned never to doubt myself, to be patient and take my time, that it’s ok to test the waters before taking a big leap, and that a person can do just about anything with a solid support system.

Last summer, Parsons implemented a “choose your theme” principle where all campers chose the theme for the week once they arrived at camp. Each level also had the ability to choose their activities for the “Build Your Own Adventure” sessions.

CAMP DIRECTOR

One of the most memorable and challenging camping trips I had was in Colombia. I was ten years old and shy but full of energy, eager to learn new skills, and put everything into practice. We had been learning different methods for building campfires for months, and I was ready to go through any challenge to complete my badge. The morning of our test, it was foggy with rain and lightning, so building my campfire was almost impossible. But I remember how empowered my friends and leaders made me feel, and I didn’t give up because I had the support, the tools, and the determination to light the fire. When I finally got a small flame, I felt inspired by this light and how something so simple could make me feel so much passion for continuing! I believe this was when I discovered confidence in the outdoors and survival skills. I consider camp my safe space. When campers say they feel the same way, when they overcome challenges, when peers support them, their love for the outdoors grows. It makes me happy and proud to be a witness to their growth.

Campers inspire us to renovate program and facilities and make them more exciting every year. Last year Camp Maripai added hammock city. BIT took better care of our horse tack as a service project, and CITs painted all the program ramada benches. Thank you all for making camp a better place.

CHRIS “ROADRUNNER” NEWELL

CAMP DIRECTOR

My parents first took me camping when I was just 6-months old – of course, I don’t remember that – but being out in nature, making forts, baking mudpies, running barefoot, collecting rocks, and climbing trees were the highlights of my childhood. I distinctly remember a camping trip to Calf Creek, Utah, when I was ten, and my sister was nine months old. Our family and friends hiked up the creek a couple of miles or so and spent hours playing in the creek. On the way back, I insisted on carrying my sister in the backpack. The adults kept asking me how long I was going to carry her, thinking I would tire and pass her on to one of them. Finally, I said, “Long enough to show you I can!” I carried her on my back all the way to the campground. My strategy worked, and that fall, my dad took me on my first backpacking trip to Canyonlands National Park! One of the great satisfactions of being Camp Director is seeing campers challenge themselves in new ways and discover what they can do!

Last year, in response to campers’ requests for more choice at camp, Shadow Rim Ranch added two weekly “Camper Choice” program blocks to choose from a variety of camp activities. Camper Choice is a hit and was included this year in all 6-11-day sessions! Keep the feedback coming!

CAMP DIRECTOR

I can still recall the feeling of wearing my Girl Scout Brownie uniform. The brown polyester knee-high socks, brown dress, beanie, and cool red scarf–I was so proud! I was a very shy girl, and Girl Scouting helped me make friends and overcome my fears. During cookie-selling time, talking to others was very challenging for me, but each time I made a sale, I grew more confident. As a Girl Scout Junior I earned my most memorable badge (and still have it today). We were all to meet at the local park for a long bike ride. My friend and I had the wrong day, and no one else from the troop was there. We decided to take our own ride and spent the entire day biking the roads of our small farming community. My troop leader heard about this and gave me the Bicycling Badge, and said she was proud of me. Through my Girl Scouting experiences, I learned to trust myself through challenging situations. As a Camp Director, I am grateful to continue learning alongside campers and staff, and witnessing growth, courage, and confidence.

Last summer, we added the “Variety Showcase” on the last day of camp at Willow Springs' Pima Stage where campers can sign up to show their talents. Summer camp sessions are also designed with feedback from our campers.

TIERED PRICING

We are proud to continue to offer the Girl Scout Camp experience at an affordable price, significantly below the industry average. This is possible because a portion of the Council proceeds from the cookie program helps underwrite the costs of camp. In addition, many families choose to pay the rate reflecting the true cost of the camp session. We offer a three-tiered pricing structure to provide families the opportunity to take an active role in creating sustainable camps for girls now and in the future. Each family chooses the pricing tier most appropriate to their needs. Every camper will receive the same high-quality programming you’ve come to expect from Girl Scouts, regardless of pricing tier selected. For each session described, three prices are listed representing the following tiered levels: » TIER 1 – This rate reflects our historically low rate, made possible by grants, donations and the cookie program. » TIER 2 – This rate helps sustain camp and falls about halfway between the Tier 1 rate and the full cost of the camp session. » TIER 3 – This rate most closely reflects the true cost per-camper including relative costs for program supplies, insurance, facilities upkeep, food and camp staff salaries.

REFUNDS, CANCELLATIONS AND CHANGES Cancellations, transfers, bus fees or any changes to reservations must be emailed to reghelp@girlscoutsaz.org. Refund policy for all camp sessions (including weekend programs) will be processed as follows: » 16 business days before session – 100% less deposit

» 6-10 business days before session – 50% less deposit

» 11-15 business days before session – 75% less deposit

» 5 or fewer business days before session – no refund

If a camper must leave camp early or cannot make it to camp due to unexpected circumstances: » If a camper cancels due to injury or illness, an email must be submitted to the Camp Director and Customer Care team to request a refund. » The camp fee less the deposit may be prorated and refunded. » Camp fees will not be refunded if a camper leaves a session due to misconduct. » Parents/guardians are responsible for making all travel arrangements if a camper leaves camp early.

CAMPERSHIPS

We want to ensure that everyone who wants to attend camp can do so, regardless of financial situation. If you believe paying for camp would be a financial hardship, please apply for a campership at girlscoutsaz.org/campership. » Camperships are not guaranteed for the full amount and will not exceed $500. Once approved, it will be applied for one camp session per camper. » Recipients will be notified after cookie incentives are released at the beginning of April. » Campers applying for camperships must register for a camp session and pay the non-refundable deposit before submitting the financial assistance application (10% deposit for weeklong camps or $10 per person deposit for Troop/Family Camps). » Camperships can be applied to troop or family camp weekends up to the cost of the camp. » Trading post, t-shirt, patch, camp kits, and bus transportation are not covered by Camperships.

Requests for refunds will only be considered until the end of August after the camp season. Refunds cannot be given for no-shows. Please email refund requests to reghelp@girlscoutsaz.org.

DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN EARN A PATCH BY ATTENDING ALL FOUR CAMPS? It’s the “I CAMPED ALL FOUR” patch, which is available for purchase at the camp Trading Posts during the summer and at the Council Shop year-round. You can earn and purchase this patch for attending an encampment as well.

Day campers have two transportation options: » Campers may be dropped off at camp OR » Register for van transportation from one of three Valley locations.

The van fee is $65 per week round-trip and is non-refundable. One-way trips are not available. Van confirmation packets will be sent a week before the session starts and will contain more detailed information about transportation times and locations.

TRADING POST

During their stay at our camps, campers will visit the camp store, called the Trading Post, at least once. Our Trading Posts offer a chance for girls to purchase a souvenir or a snack. We recommend $20 for a week’s stay and the money be placed in your camper’s Trading Post account during the registration process. We do not advise campers bring cash to camp. Prices at the Trading Post can vary between 50¢ to $2 for snacks, and $2-$25 for stuffed animal, t-shirts, sweaters, water bottles, flashlights, and more! Be mindful of the amount chosen each session because Trading Post monies: » Can only be utilized for the session at that camp. » Do not transfer to other camp’s stores. » Any money remaining in the account is non-refundable (in whole or part). Monies accepted for Trading Post purchases: » Credit card (with camp registration, at camp during check-in day, or by phone a week prior to session start date with GSACPC Customer Care Team (602) 452-7030.) Contact the camp directly to add more money to an account during a camp session. » Cash at camp or at bus/van locations. » Program credits, council gift card, or credit cards at camp or at bus locations. If your camper comes to camp with additional money, we encourage campers to create a Trading Post account upon arrival to camp. Camp is not responsible for lost cash.

EARN YOUR WAY COOKIES TO CAMP! How does selling packages of Girl Scout Cookies support the Girl Scout Camp Program? When a girl sells cookies, she is not only selling a package of deliciousness, she is investing in herself and her GSACPC sisters. Program Credits and Camp Vouchers can be redeemed for individual girl camp sessions, troop proceeds can be used for Troop Camp and Encampments, and a portion of Council proceeds are used to support camperships and maintain our properties. But did you know that she is also part of something even bigger—something thousands of awesome girls nationwide who are a part of too? When she participates in the Girl Scout Cookie Program, she is part of the largest girl-led entrepreneurial program in the world—and that’s a huge deal! All Girl Scouts can sell Girl Scout Cookies and choose to earn Program Credits or Camp Vouchers as their cookie incentive reward. Program Credits can be used for camp session fees, bus, Trading Post, membership fees, Council Shop, and travel. All deposits must be held by credit card before applying Program Credits and/or Camp Vouchers. For more information, visit girlscoutsaz.org/program-credits or email reghelp@girlscoutsaz.org.

WHAT'S NEW IN 2020?

2020 at Camp Maripai will bring more horse-focused sessions throughout the summer, more Girl Scout Brownie (grades 2-3) sessions, and at least one badge program each week. We continue with our Discover Camp! sessions, allowing new girls to try a basic outdoor experience at camp. Canoeing is no longer provided at Maripai; however, girls can access this specialized program at our sister camp Shadow Rim Ranch. Hatchet throwing is available for 6th grade and up, and archery now available for 2nd grade and up.

SHADOW RIM RANCH PAYSON, ARIZONA

Shadow Rim Ranch is a 47-acre camp nestled deep in the pines of the Tonto National Forest and tucked under the beautiful Mogollon Rim. Shadow Rim offers a climbing tower and zip line, archery range, canoeing, naturalist programming/hiking, and traditional pioneer skills at the original heritage homestead cabin. Chase Creek flows through camp and beckons campers to creek-walk, and also provides water to our unique pake (too big to be a pond, too small to be a lake). Camp facilities include the lodge, trading post, wellness center, arts & crafts cabin, garden, little free library, and four cabin units (3 of the 4 units are primitive cabins without electricity). All units have running water, showers and flushing toilets. Counselors live in a separate cabin near the camper cabins. All activities are weather permitting.

WHAT'S NEW IN 2020? We heard your requests for both shorter camp sessions and longer camp sessions, and this year we are offering a bit of everything. We have 4-day Discover Camp! sessions, our usual 6-day sessions, and are piloting two 11-day Girl Scout Cadette (grades 6-8) sessions that include 1-2 nights away from camp. We’re excited to offer slingshots (for grades 2-12) and two new Trip and Travel sessions for Girl Scout Seniors (grades 9-10) and Girl Scout Ambassadors (grades 11-12) that include 4-5 days out of camp whitewater rafting in Colorado or camping and hiking in our National Parks. We are also trying several combined sessions for Girl Scout Juniors (grades 4-5) and Girl Scout Cadettes (grades 6-8) – Bookworms and Plant, Pick, Prep. (Juniors bunk with Juniors and Cadettes with Cadettes).

STILL HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT GIRL SCOUT CAMP? Must my camper be a Girl Scout to attend camp? No! All girls are welcome to attend Girl Scout Camp. Campers not currently registered as Girl Scout members will add the $35 membership fee to their camp registration. The Girl Scout membership will carry through the entire next membership year. Campers must have a membership to be covered for insurance purposes. Campers are eligible to participate in any Girl Scout activities they’d like to join through September 2021 without paying additional member fees! For more information about year-round Girl Scout opportunities, contact reghelp@girlscoutsaz.org.

Is financial aid available? Camperships are available and are awarded based on financial need. Award letters are processed after cookie program incentives are awarded, around the beginning of April. Campers applying for camperships must register for a camp session and pay the non-refundable 10% deposit for weeklong camps (4 days or longer) or $10 per person deposit for Troop/Family Camps before submitting the financial assistance application. Campership forms are available at girlscoutsaz.org/campership.

Can my camper be in the same unit as her friend or sister? A camper may request up to two “buddies” when registering for camp. All campers must register for the same program or session at the same camp. Make sure your camper and her buddies (and parent/guardian) are planning this together. We cannot accommodate larger requests for buddies due to cabin sizes and intention of campers making new friends.

What is the process for Counselor in Training 3 (CIT 3)? If you have completed CIT 1 and CIT 2, then you may be ready for CIT 3. If you attend for consecutive weeks, you may be required to go home on the weekends, depending on weekend camp activities and at each Camp Director’s discretion. You no longer need an interview or application to register for the program.

Can my troop sign up to be together and be in the same cabin or unit? We have summer sessions available for troops and families where they can be in the same cabin or cabin unit. However, during our residential sleep-away camp sessions, requests for more than two buddies cannot be accommodated.

42

What is the waitlist process? When a camper is on the waitlist, no payment is required. When a spot becomes available, an email will be sent to register and pay for the session within 24 hours. Please check your email frequently to ensure you don’t miss an opportunity to register when a spot is available.

Can my camper bring their phone or smartwatch to camp? DO NOT send phones, Apple watches, tablets, iPods, or other electronic devices to camp with your camper. Camp is an opportunity for campers to “unplug” and connect with themselves, their new friends and nature. Any electronic devices brought to camp will be placed in the camp office until the end of the camper’s session. Girl Scouts–Arizona Cactus-Pine Council is not responsible for any missing or damaged personal items.

Do you permit visitors to camp? Each camp property hosts an Open House where families and guests can tour camp, speak with the Camp Director and meet the camp staff. Visitors are not permitted on site while camp is in session.

How can I stay in touch with my camper while they are at camp? Your camper would LOVE to get mail while at camp! Send packages and letters a week before their camp session to ensure they arrive on time. You may also drop off packages and letters at the bus drop-off or the registration table at camp. They will be distributed throughout the week. Please clearly label all items with the camper’s name, session name, and day of delivery. Remember, no food with nuts.

Can I call the camp to check on my camper? Of course! If you have any questions, concerns, or need reassurance that your camper is doing well, call or email the camp director. Rest assured that we will reach out to you in the event we need to provide extra support for your camper due to homesickness, illness, behavior, or (in rare cases) serious injury.

What happens if my camper needs medical attention while at camp? A Health Supervisor is on-site at each camp and oversees the routine health care and administration of medications for all campers and staff. A physician is on call. Medications are distributed in the morning, at lunch, dinner, night, and if required at a specific time. Make sure you note this in your camper’s health form. Parent/guardians will be notified in the event of an emergency, if their camper requires additional medical attention at the nearest hospital/clinic, or if their camper spends a night in the Wellness Center. What if my camper needs special accommodations? We are committed to ensuring that all girls have a positive camp experience. If your camper needs additional support to be successful, please contact the Camp Director, and we will work with you to make sure we can provide that support. This includes, but is not limited to, dietary needs, allergies, specific health care needs, and mobility limitations. Your camper must be able to shower and dress themselves and be supported and supervised in Girl Scout adult to camper ratio.

What if my camper has dietary needs? If your camper has unique food allergies or special dietary needs, please contact the Camp Director. Since our food is ordered before each camp session and meals are typically planned well in advance, notifying the Camp Director right away is important. We will work with you to find the best possible solution to your camper's needs. These solutions may include families supplying unique and hard to find foods to supplement your camper's diet. Our camps are “nut aware.” We do not serve peanut butter in our dining hall, and prepared meals are checked for items that contain any possibility of nuts. We recommend that you list dietary needs on the health history forms during the registration process to help the camp team serve your camper in the best possible way.

Where will my camper sleep while at camp? Campers sleep in cabins that are grouped into units. Each camp facility is different, and the structure of the cabins and units are not all the same. Counselors live in a separate cabin near the camper cabins. Campers sleeping in tents, hammocks, or yurts will be specified in the program description, and those sleeping locations may or may not have access to electricity or indoor bathrooms.

Be Prepared at Camp...

BRING A CAMP KIT! Kits are available for purchase when registering for camp and are a great way to make sure campers have what they need for their sessions!

A camp t-shirt, set of postcards, patch, and camp kit are available for purchase during your registration process. Any purchased t-shirts, postcards, and patch will be given to your camper at camp. Generally Camp Kits will be mailed directly to campers at home before their camp session starts. But if a Camp Kit order is placed within two weeks of the camp session, the kit will be sent directly to camp for them! T-shirts, postcards, and patches are also available for purchase at the Trading Post at each camp location. Camp Kits can be purchased at the Council Shop. Campers attending multiple camp sessions will only need one camp kit.
