The benefits of being outdoors and learning to appreciate nature are well documented. For many girls, their first camping experience is through Girl Scouts. At camp, girls have fun, make new friends, try new things, improve their skills and overcome challenges. Girls enjoy being outside and exploring the natural world.
04
Not only are our summer camp programs fun, but they let girls learn through experience, in a safe and supportive environment. The sessions are designed to help girls experience the outdoors and master new skills in a progression. As girls master a skill, they gain a sense of competency and are ready to take the next step in learning. This structured approach creates an atmosphere of continual learning and growth. Through this, girls gain confidence, a sense of competency and independence.

meet the camp team At Girl Scouts, we know the power of the outdoor experience on girls’ lives. We watch girls physically and mentally challenge themselves, see girls try something new, fail and try again, cheered on by their friends. We observe girls making new friends, expanding their food choices and cooking their own meals, and working together with their cabin mates. We see girls’ faces light up when they discover a new interest or master a new skill. We see girls gain greater self-confidence and more independence. Our Camp leadership team understands the power in every G.I.R.L. We focus on bringing girls outdoors and empowering them to take on challenges, discover new skills and confidence within themselves.

I have vivid memories of my first time at camp—canoeing, rappelling, learning campfire songs, and sleeping in a cabin. At the time, it simply felt like a whole lot of fun. I wasn’t aware that I was developing skills, problem-solving strategies and resilience that would serve me for the rest of my life. Later, my family was vacationing on Lake Huron and my sister, a friend and I paddled our canoe to a lighthouse on the edge of the open water. We spent a blissful afternoon exploring the small rocky outcrop. As we began to paddle back, the wind kicked up and white caps began to form on the choppy water. Feeling a little scared, yet determined, we dug in and paddled in fierce unison, singing every camp song we knew until we made it back across the bay to safety. I am honored to hold space for girls as they participate in the thrill of their own summer camp adventures. They may think camp is just a lot of fun, but they are learning how to dig deep within themselves for courage and strength when the winds of life kick up and the waters get choppy.
CRYSTAL "KIT TY" DINGOT T Girl Scout camp is a special place where girls find their inner voice and grow into leaders. This was certainly true for me–I wouldn’t be who I am today without camp. I grew up in the Arizona desert, and often ran through washes and climbed mesquite trees. I camped and hiked all over this great state, and gazed at stars stretched as far as the eye could see. This desert has been home for me. I find no greater joy than the smell of creosote after the rain. My first experience at Girl Scout camp was as a counselor at Camp Maripai when I was nineteen. I’d never been to a real camp before and hadn’t been a Girl Scout. I was nervous I wouldn’t fit in, but that wasn’t the case. My new sisters wrapped me in friendship and filled my summer with adventure. That first summer at camp changed my life and altered my career path--Girl Scout camp became my new home. Since then, I have worked in every position at camp, and was the Maripai camp director for five years. Last year, I became camp director for the new Bob and Renee Parsons Leadership Center for Girls and Women at Camp South Mountain. Bringing this camp to life has been an immensely rewarding experience.
JUSTINA "OOOPS!" BURKS As I watched some of my friends make unhealthy and life-altering decisions as a pre-teen, my life-altering decision came in the form of Troop 1757. I joined Girl Scouts at the age of 12 and had my first camp experience at 13 years old. Yes, I’d been camping with family and friends prior to that, but “camp” was different. Camp was a freedom that I had never felt before. In one short weekend, I conquered my fear of heights, blazed trails and discovered a voice I didn’t think was there…I was Spider-man, Wonder Woman, and the best bad stand-up comedian ever. My Girl Scout troop became my anchor throughout my teen years (and in adulthood, we still support each other) and leading others in outdoor experiences became my passion. I’ve learned and grown from all the challenges and opportunities provided by being part of a Girl Scout camp community. I carry them with me as unseen badges of honor and sisterhood, and still throw out the poorly timed pun or joke every now and then. My journey began with a single camp experience for a shy, quiet, easily intimidated 13-year-old and continues in the excitement, growth, and leadership I see in every girl that comes to one of our camps.
MICHELLE 'JUNIPER' BALFE-KEEFER
GSACPC has the most awesome camp directors!! So impressed by their dedication, hard work, and caring, not to mention handling challenging situations with practicality and tact. I sing their praises wherever I go!
gsacpc summer camp guide
I remember my first week of overnight camp in Idaho. I was 10 years old and incredibly shy. On the first day of camp, all campers had to pass a swim test in the lake and I was shaking inside. I didn’t feel confident in my ability to swim all around the lake, and had a deep fear of water. As I started to take the test I could feel myself giving up, and at that exact moment a counselor noticed and told me it was ok to do the backstroke for the test. I was much more comfortable with this swim stroke and so I passed! That was just a moment or two, but I can still recall the feeling of support from an encouraging adult. Over the years as a camp counselor and outdoor educator, I have given my attention and support to campers because I believe in the power of the outdoor experience. I am grateful to be of service through programs that enrich the lives of girls in a camp setting. I witness campers growing, becoming counselors and changing the world through their enduring patience, love, encouragement, and kindness - pillars of Girl Scouting.

Tiered Pricing & Discounts PRICING The fact that our camp programs cost significantly less than the average camp makes us proud. That means more girls can have a great outdoor experience in the summer – enjoying our Girl Scout camps, bonding with staff, and participating in their own adventures. Our three-tiered pricing structure gives families the opportunity to take an active role in creating sustainable camps for years to come. Each family can choose the pricing tier that is most appropriate to their needs. All campers will receive the same high-quality, engaging programming you’ve come to expect from Girl Scouts, regardless of pricing tier selected. How it Works: TIER I

Gain skills and confidence in the outdoors while exploring all the fun challenges that Shadow Rim has to offer! Located north of Payson, Shadow Rim Ranch is a 47-acre camp set deep in the pines of the Tonto National Forest and in the shadow of the spectacular Mogollon Rim. Chase Creek flows through the camp and offers creek-walking adventures, blackberry picking (in late July), and provides water for our camp gardens and the Pake (Pake=too big to be a pond and too small to be a Lake.) The original homestead building, built in the early 1900s, is the hub of our garden, outdoor cooking area, traditional pioneer activities, and arts and crafts. All campers will get to canoe, climb, hike, cook outdoors, explore nature, and make arts and crafts. Girls entering 4th grade and above will also get to zipline and do archery. Additional off-camp adventures include day-trips to explore the wonders of Rim Country to multi-day expeditions in the wilds of Northern Arizona, Utah, and Colorado! From exploring nature, climbing, ziplining, and canoeing, to backpacking and travel, the FUN never stops at Shadow Rim Ranch!

Camp Maripai has a long history of offering girls and families a traditional camp experience with an emphasis on horsemanship programs for beginners through advanced riders. But that’s not all Maripai has going for it! From canoeing, archery, hiking, to gardening and science programs – there is a little something for every girl! Maripai is an 80-acre camp bordered by the Prescott National Forest and situated at an elevation of 6,000 feet. The mountainous terrain is full of boulder fields, pine, and deciduous trees. Groom Creek divides the camp. There are several short hikes and nature trails throughout the property. Girls entering 4th grade and up, attending Camp Maripai for 5 days or more, will have the opportunity to participate in canoeing, archery, sleep out under the stars, and horseback riding. All outdoor activities are weather permitting.

health and safety
gsacpc summer camp guide
Our camps meet stringent county, state and national standards. The main gate is locked nightly at each camp. The local law enforcement agencies are notified of our camp sessions. A health supervisor is always on duty during the camp sessions to supervise the health and safety of campers and dispense all medications.
OUR STAFF Most of our camp counselors are college students who are studying education, recreation, sociology, or psychology and want the experience of working with children in an outdoor setting. All staff complete a lengthy application process which includes a written application, employment history, reference checks, verification of skills and certifications, a personal interview, and a background check. Camp counselors participate in a week-long staff training – covering topics like camper behavior and support, creating safe space, outdoor activities, roles of the counselor, group dynamics, emergency procedures, and much more!
SPECIAL NEEDS Please contact the Camp Director for campers who require special diets (including food allergies), special health care or have mobility limitations. At that time, you will be able to discuss the nature of your camper’s needs and gather more information to determine if the proper support, supervision and necessary accommodations can be provided for your camper for a safe, fulfilling camp experience. We are dedicated to serving all girls in our Council and accommodations can be made in many cases.
TO BE SUCCESSFUL AT CAMP Your camper needs to be independent with self-care (showering, dressing, using the restroom) and be comfortable in an 8:1 camper to staff ratio.

FACILITIES Sleeping facilities at camp are primarily cabins. Depending on the camp and session attending, it can also include dormitory-style living, yurts or traditional tents. Counselors do not share sleeping facilities with campers, but live near them. All units are equipped with running water, shower houses and toilets that may be separate from cabins, but nearby.

WHAT WILL YOUR CAMPER COME HOME WITH...? Besides amazing stories of her adventures and camp songs for days, each camper will come home with a camper envelope that includes:
»» Girl Scout Badge, Patch, or Journey your camper earned while at camp. »» Camper Highlights – a reflection by your camper’s counselors on what they saw her achieve during her »» »»
week of camp. Unit Photo of your camper, her counselors and new friends! A list of upcoming programs so your camper can continue her Girl Scout adventures!
STILL NOT SURE ABOUT GIRL SCOUT CAMP?!?! Frequently Asked Questions:
»» Does my camper have be a Girl Scout to attend camp? Not a Girl Scout? NOT A PROBLEM! We welcome all girls. Girls who are not already registered as Girl Scouts will have the membership fee added to their camp registration.
66
New this year – for $35 your membership fee will carry through the entire next membership year. You’ll be a Girl Scout through September of 2019 and be able to have plenty more adventures!
»» Is financial aid available? Camperships are available and are awarded based on financial need. Forms are available through the registration process or by visiting bit.ly/2018campership.
»» Can my camper be in the same unit as her friend or sister? A camper may request ONE “buddy” when registering for camp. Both campers must register for the same program or session at the same camp. Make sure you and your camper’s buddy and her parents are planning this together.
»» Can my troop sign up to be together and be in the same cabin or unit? We have summer sessions available for troops and groups. During our non-troop or group camp sessions multiple buddy requests will not be accommodated.
»» Can my daughter bring her cell phone or other technology to camp? Please DO NOT send cell phones, tablets, iPods or other electronic devices to camp with your camper. Any electronic devices found will be placed in the camp office until the end of your camper’s session. Girl Scouts—Arizona Cactus-Pine Council is not responsible for any missing or damaged personal items.
»» Can I visit the camp? Yes! Each camp hosts an Open House where guests can come tour camp, speak with the Camp Director, and meet the camp staff. Dates for Open Houses can be found on page 9.
»» How can I stay in touch with my camper while she’s at camp?
»» Can I call camp to check on my camper? Of course! We encourage you to contact the Camp Director at camp, if you have any questions, concerns or just need reassurance that your camper is doing well. Conversely, we will reach out to you in the event we need to provide extra support to your camper due to homesickness, illness, or serious injury. *Remember, campers may not bring phones to camp!
»» What happens if my child needs medical attention while at camp? A Health Supervisor is on-site at each camp and oversees the routine health care and administration of medications for all campers and staff. A doctor is on-call if illness or injury requires additional medical attention. Parents will be notified in the event of an emergency.
»» What if my child needs special accommodations (including dietary needs)? We are committed to ensuring that all girls have a positive camp experience. If your daughter needs additional support to be successful, please contact the Camp Director. We will work with you to make sure we can provide that support. This includes, but is not limited to dietary needs, allergies, specific health care needs, or mobility limitations.
gsacpc summer camp guide
Your camper would LOVE to get mail from you or other family members while at camp! You can send packages and letters directly to camp during her session or even prior to her session. You may also drop off packages and letters to be distributed throughout the week at the bus drop-off check-in tables. Please be sure all items are clearly labeled with your camper’s name and session.
To be successful at camp, your campers needs to be independent with self-care (showering, dressing, using the restroom) and be comfortable in an 8:1 camper to staff ratio.
