Visual contrast is a crucial design strategy when it comes to pleasing the eye. Being able to work with the basic principles of contrast influences the ability for an artist to create an effective composition that transcends the image into a visually pleasing design. There are six basic visual contrasts, including contrast in scale, weight, direction, texture, space, and form. In this project, we focused on these fundamentals by making twelve squares presenting contrasting forms using only circles, expressed through a black and white arrangement. I approached this project in a direction that focused on the stroke, and exaggeration within the circles of each concept. I struggled with the overlapping of the circles, and making them fit within each other perfectly in a way that is simple enough that the concept is clear, but still exaggerated and transcends the design into a beautiful, thorough design. In the end, I am very pleased with the outcome of the designs, and learned a great amount about the principles of contrast that affect design through the creation of shapes and colors through Adobe Illustrator.

The Formstorm project focused primarily on transcending and transforming images into grayscale that portrays the six main visual contrasts through 10 dynamic compositions. These compositions would later be cropped into a 5 x 5, 300 ppi square. I decided to continue focusing on exaggeration, with the focus on high contrast compositions. Everyone in class was given different objects to photograph, mine being two long pieces of wood. I was immediately stumped. I struggled to think of the different types of contrasts and how they could be portrayed through photographs. After lots of thinking, and lots of blurry photos, I captured enough images I was satisfied with, but I knew there was something missing. We then converted our photos into grayscale using Adobe Photoshop. This was the little thing my compositions were missing. I feel every stage of this project contributed to making an engaging series of compositions, and editing them into grayscale really gave the compositions a uniqueness that brought out my creative voice. This project also made me more comfortable with Photoshop, and photography as a whole, especially within the abstract level.
