This special issue of Sottoterra was conceived almost three years ago, in two distinct parts. The first part as a documentary about the GSB-USB history over eighty years ranging from 1932 to present and a second section containing notes written by our own cavers, which we had asked to talk about themselves and the Group. It did not turn out entirely in these means. When the assembly stage of n° 134 started the editors had just completed the publication of the book on Karst Geosites of Emilia-Romagna Region, and shortly after committed the unimaginable plunge in the volume of “Le Grotte Bolognesi,” punctuated by the publication of numbers 132 and 133 of “Sottoterra”. In both the “Geosites” and “LGB” we had already written a lot of things about the history of the GSB-USB and it would have been useless to summarize the detailed facts from the 133 Sottoterra issues published in the last 51 years. Therefore we decided to limit the section “Documents” only to contributions from the original stories or news which expand or clarify the events of the past. The second part confirms it’s original subject, available to our “old” and “new” cavers that took part at the festivities organized for the 80th anniversary of GSB and the 55th anniversary of the founding of USB. A third section which contains the results of patient research by Claudio Busi on the descendants of Francesco Orsoni, a pioneer of Bolognese Speleology has also been added. Among other things, we learn that Tito Romolo Orsoni, the second of his two sons died in 1914 at Verdun, fighting for France at the age of twenty-seven. Nobody knew also that the last of the Orsoni family died in 1971. This “special issue” comes out like this, with so many different topics and - as Michele would say - more “patchwork” than ever. 26 permanent members, 57 ordinary, 36 aggregates: 119 cavers from the GSB-USB in 2012. Last year, 24 have taken part to our fifth expedition in Bosnia, some thirty or so work more or less assiduously in the Apuan Alps, usually another twenty in the Bolognese area. As many in the artificial cavities field. A dozen deal with organization issues, five with administration issues, five coordinate exploration activities, four are involved in the Library, three in the Photographic Archives, three keep track and organize the gear, two at the Fantini Museum, four in the survey Registry, two take care of the Arni house, four magazine editors, eight represent the group with FSRER, two in the Secretariat. Of course, often a member of people play multiple roles and work in different areas where the activity of Groups takes place. To “put together” the 432 pages of “Le Grotte Bolognesi”, for example, 28 members have been working with text, 38 with photographs and the two annual issues of “Sottoterra” for more than 200 pages. We collaborate effectively with the Regional Speleological Federation (FSRER), with universities, with Regional Parks and Italian and foreign speleological groups. If we would still compile the “State of the Union” as the presidents of USB did in the ‘60 gleefully mimicking those in the U.S., we could certainly include the belief that “the state” of the GSBUSB is very satisfactory. Moreover, the average age of our cavers is getting lower, thanks to the participation of young members, even in their twenties, in the last years. It is true that the results of this statistic are penalized, so to speak, by the fortunate presence of the noisy crowd of “dinosaurs”, many of which are still extraordinarily active in the field. The GSB-USB thanks the old and young cavers who have built, given life and projected into the future the activities of the Group. the anniversaries we remember are the proof of their commitment and their talent: it is their Party.
