MY SUMMER ADVENTURE! 2017

GIRL SCOUT SUMMER CAMP

My summer Adventure! Girl Scout Camp is where go-getters spend their summers.

Girls flourish when they discover self-confidence that comes through independence and safe risk-taking away from home at Girl Scout Camp. At Badgerland, our camp programs are designed to give your Girl Scout the experience of living outdoors and a safe space to explore new places and activities. Girl Scout camp is about learning independence. Here she learns to take care of her belongings and herself with the guidance of our talented camp staff. At camp, she will develop leadership skills. And gain confidence by taking on risks and challenges, big and small. Camp is a rich Girl Scouting tradition. And research confirms what we’ve always known – Girl Scouts benefit immensely from their time outdoors. The Girl Scouts Research Institute’s studies proves that by participating in outdoor programs girls experience personal growth and empowerment, try new things, overcome fears, learn teamwork and develop leadership skills. Significantly, the research also shows that girls who participate in outdoor camping experiences develop a lifelong environmental stewardship. Isn’t that wonderful and amazing?! This summer, I encourage you to send her on an adventure. Send her to Girl Scout camp to experience the outdoors in a safe and caring community where she will develop greater courage, confidence and character.

Marci Henderson, CEO Girl Scouts of Wisconsin - Badgerland

Resident Camp Info

Resident camp is a sleep-away opportunity for girls to build independence, character and friendship. Camp sessions vary in length depending upon the age-level and the program. If your camper is not ready for an overnight program, sign her up for one of our day camps on pages 21-23.

CAMP LOCATIONS Camp Ehawee is for campers in grades K-5 and Camp Black Hawk hosts older girls. There’s also a “bridging” camp just for 5th and 6th graders to experience both camps Ehawee and Black Hawk.

GRADE LEVELS Sign her up for a camp based on the school grade she will complete in spring 2017. Girls sign up to attend camp individually; it is not typically a troop event. But, remember, she can also attend overnight camp with her troop at Troop Camp (page 25) or even with mom or dad at Family Camps (pages 18-19).

LIVING AT CAMP All the girls in the same camp program share a living unit. Each group can range from 5-24 girls with 2-4 adult camp staff assigned to the program. The camp staff lives in the unit with the girls. All camp staff spend 10 days training before camp to keep our Girl Scouts healthy and safe and to make sure everyone is having a great time at camp.

WHERE GIRLS SLEEP Camp is rustic. Girls stay in platform tents or cabins with other girls who have signed up for the same camp session. Each resident camp has a central shower house. Camp Black Hawk has platform tents, heavy canvas structures, with wooden floors and four beds. Ehawee’s cabins have lights, screened windows and bunk beds.

CAMP STAFF All staff members go through an intense screening, selection and training process. Many staff are aspiring or current teachers and outdoor educators. A big percentage are former Girl Scout campers! Staff members do not always stay in the same sleeping quarters as campers. Instead, counselor quarters are near the center of the unit, where they can monitor the entire group easily. At night, camp counselors check on girls to make sure that they are settling down well. Often they’ll read stories or sing them to sleep. Staff members will always be within earshot, and respond immediately if needed. 6

Swimming, hiking, yoga and more. Varies daily. Keep in mind the daily schedules will vary a bit depending on the camper’s age and her program.

SAFETY AT GIRL SCOUT CAMP We are dedicated to creating a safe environment for your camper to enjoy a great camp experience. Resident camp staff attend a mandatory minimum of 10 full days of on-site training prior to camper arrival, that includes CPR & First Aid, emergency response procedures and drills, and effective and appropriate behavioral management techniques. Specialized program staff members (lifeguards, adventure staff, etc.) participate in specific safety training for that program area. All adventure trips have a staff member trained in Wilderness First Aid who accompanies the trip. All staff is fully reference and background checked. All staff members who drive campers are over 21 and trained to drive passenger vans and submit their driving record. Staff constantly monitors weather and, if severe weather occurs, takes immediate action to mitigate danger to the campers.

Girl Scouts of Wisconsin - Badgerland comply with GSUSA standards, as well as state and local community health codes. Camps Black Hawk and Ehawee are accredited through the American Camp Association. Every three years the camps undergo an extensive review and accreditation is earned only after successfully meeting ACA’s high standards. The strict requirements are recognized nationally.

CAMP EHAWEE for girls completing grades K-4

Mindoro, La Crosse County Ehawee campers live in a bunkhouse, cabins or platform tents with girls from their program group. Each unit has its own fire ring, unit house and bathroom with flush toilets. Camp Ehawee (pronounced ee-how-ee) is home to a swimming pool, archery range and athletic fields including volleyball and basketball courts. Ehawee campers canoe on a tributary to the Black River and creek hop at Crystal Creek. There are nature trails for exploring and the amphitheater where the entire camp gathers for the traditional Girl Scout’s Own Ceremony. Camp also features a performing arts center with a stage and indoor nature center. Meals are eaten in Hope Lodge.

CAMP BLACK HAWK for girls completing grades 5-12

Antigo, Langlade County Black Hawk campers live in platform tents with other girls in their program. The living area includes a campfire ring and a screened-in shelter. The living areas have latrines (we call these La Las!) and flush toilets are available around camp. The camp has a high ropes course, climbing wall, archery range and an adventure barn. Black Hawk has two gorgeous lakes for swimming , paddle boarding, boating and fishing. There are nature trails for hiking and biking, an arts and crafts house and a nature center. Most meals are eaten in the dining hall, but girls will have the chance to cook over a campfire, too. SHE WILL MAKE FRIENDS!

Most girls come to camp on their own, without a buddy, so if your camper is nervous about not knowing anyone, reassure her she will make new friends! Counselors are trained to help girls build new relationships. If she’s coming to camp with a friend, girls can request bunk buddies. Bunk buddies must be registered for the same program and request each other. What if your BFF isn’t a Girl Scout? She is welcome, too! She’ll simply pay the $25 Girl Scout membership dues and then she can register for camp with you!

YOU CHOOSE THE PRICE OF CAMP AT CHECKOUT DURING REGISTRATION YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO ‘ADD ON’ TO THE BASE COST. READ ON... Running a resident camp is costly. But we believe these overnight programs are important to the Girl Scout experience, and that’s why they are subsidized by Badgerland Council. Put simply, the cost of operating the camp program is must greater than the amount paid by campers. That’s where the tiered pricing system fits in; it allows families the choice to help cover the actual cost of resident camp if they are financially able. Total Cost reflects the actual cost of operating the program including all support staff, supplies, maintenance of buildings and grounds and facility upgrades. Partial Cost covers approximately 85% of the actual cost and is for those who can pay more but not the full fee. Base Cost is the lowest price and covers approximately 70% of the actual cost of operating camp programs. At checkout, you will have the option to add-on to reflect either the Total or Partial cost of her camp. Tiered pricing is voluntary and in no way influences the experience girls receive. 28
