Girl Scout Scholarships rland Envision Badge larship Recipient S ch o “I am the first Girl Scout to graduate from Cassville High School in many years. I help plan and run meetings for Junior and Cadette troops. Girl Scouting has challenged me to step outside of my comfort zone, to tackle new things and meet new people. The life lessons I have learned in Girl Scouts will continue to guide me."

~ Kyran Brinkman, Cassville rland Envision Badge larship Recipient S ch o “Throughout my high school career, I have accumulated over 300 hours of service. I volunteer my time to places like the homeless shelter, children's hospital, clothes closet and other places to both see the needs of my community while being part of the solution. Girl Scouts opened my eyes to a whole new world where I am capable of taking on the impossible!"

~ Maggie Conway, Mount Horeb 6

I will be an Innovator when figuring out how to live away from my parents. I will be a Risk-Taker everyday when I live a part of my life I have never experienced before. I will be a Leader as I look out for the people I care about. Being a Girl Scout isn't a tool in my belt for handling life. It's the belt that let me have all the tools."

~ Zoe Zander, Waunakee a Himmelsbach Lorett arship Recipient S ch o l “Girl Scouting shaped me and the foundation of my life and morals. I will always be a Girl Scout. No matter how far I go, I am surrounded all around the world by my sisters. Girl Scouting’s Highest Award The Girl Scout Gold Award is the most prestigious award that Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors can earn. Fulfilling the requirements for the Girl Scout Gold Award starts with completing prerequisites designed to develop the leadership skills needed to accomplish a Girl Scout Gold Award project. This award represents a girl’s commitment to herself and to her community as she focuses on leadership, career exploration, personal challenges and completes an enduring project that will benefit her community. It takes many hours of preparation, planning and work to accomplish the goals a girl has set for herself through her Gold Award Project. It is notable that only about five percent of eligible girls earn this award! A special note to today’s Gold Awardees: As a Girl Scout, you are part of the sisterhood of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, a global movement comprised of more than 10 million girls who are using their talents to positively impact their communities. With your talent and passion, you can make changes in your community that reach people around the world. Congratulations on your remarkable achievement! 8

Rainbow Monkey Music Room

Safe Driving Campaign

Hannah has always believed that music education is important. When she saw that the music room at the camp her brother attends was looking shabby and none too inspiring, she took action. She stepped up and rehabbed the room so all campers could learn more about music and different instruments.

After losing a friend in a car accident, Emily promised to never text and drive and to always wear her seatbelt. But she wanted to do more. For her Gold Award project, Emily coordinated a week-long safe driving campaign that included speakers, activities and memorial bracelets. As a result, 300 of her peers pledged to put down their phones and buckle up.

As a go-getter, when Hannah sees something that needs improving, she charges forward and takes action. In this case, with great fanfare, she took a downbeat music room and transformed it into a beautiful space worthy of the harmonious sounds it now inspires. “The most successful part of my project was making the room bright, colorful, welcoming and enjoyable from the prison-like state it was in."

Emily overcame her share of challenges throughout the project, but says it was all worth it when her classmates began opening up to her and sharing their heartfelt thanks. “What I learned from doing my Gold Award project was that, though some things can be hard, if you put your mind to it you can definitely achieve your goals." 9

Crescent Valley Park Restoration

Get the Log Rolling

Andrea is an outdoor girl and took notice when her local park started to look neglected. She stepped in and developed a plan for an accessible and environmentally-friendly new park. Her goal was to create a place where every person in the community could come and enjoy the outdoors.

Jessica's respect for tradition and Wisconsin history was the motivator behind her project. She wanted to reintroduce a sport that was important to her hometown back in the 19th century — log rolling!

Andrea's project required her to work closely with the city for zoning permissions and to research new playground equipment. She developed a plan and presented it to city officials (including City Council), since the park would be on public property. The project included an all-new pollinator garden, bee condo and a bike rack.

It's not easy to keep you balance while stepping across a spinning log but there's a whole new crop of folks in Sparta who sure do make it look easy! Working with the city's parks and recreation department, Jessica developed log rolling classes and demonstrated the sport at elementary schools. Bonus? Her class is still going strong and will continue to be offered through the Sparta Parks Department so people of all ages can enjoy and learn about this old-time activity.

“The leadership skills that I developed throughout this project were communication, responsibility, budgeting, research and receiving feedback."

“I learned that in order to be an effective leader you sometimes have to step out of your comfort zone. I also learned that I can do anything I want to!"

Rise & Shine Beverage Bar

Helping Homeless Families

Savannah had a 90-minute commute to school and two part-time jobs, leaving little time for sleep, studies and self-care. After learning that other students at her rural school didn't have access to healthy food options either, she went to work to bring a beverage bar to her high school.

Homelessness in her hometown sparked Emily's project. She partnered with the YWCA, which provides temporary shelter for families in need. Emily focused an transforming the living areas to be more child-friendly and welcoming for the families passing through. She also collected practical household items for families to take with them when they moved on.

Savannah developed recipes, recruited and managed a staff, shopped for inventory, and tracked sales. Upon graduation, Savannah donated her equipment and supplies to the school's special education program, which continues to run the Rise & Shine. “I learned that I have a passion for business and I enjoy it. I also learned that I am determined and have drive I enjoy sharing with others.“

Along with making the living spaces happier, she also created a Public Service Announcement that aired on local media channels to bring awareness to homelessness. That PSA prompted citizens to support the Y's homelessness initiative. “I learned a lot from this project, and I will continue to carry the skills that I learned into the future. And with this confidence I will continue to go out and learn from those experiences too.”

Senior Stories

Let's get kids outdoors! That's the driver for Eliza's Gold Award project that spanned the planning, installation and maintenance of the children’s community school plot. She created different programs for kids to join so they could spend more time outdoors enjoying the fresh air. Throughout her project Eliza brought awareness to kids about the importance of being outdoors. They got to see food growing before their eyes, complete different creative projects and try new vegetables they had never even heard of before.

12

“I learned about what it takes for me to self-regulate on a long-term project. I also learned how to balance my other responsibilities with this project. Which I think is an important skill for a leader to have.”

Nya cherishes her town’s history and noticed there was an increasing disconnection between the generations when it came to the community's past. So, she set out to capture stories, memories and anecdotes to preserve these moments for posterity. Nya worked with the Mount Horeb Area Historical Society to record, transcribe and archive oral stories by older residents, including many living in an assisted living facility. Of course gathering the stories is one thing - connecting them into a consistent record is another...and Nya did that. She wrote and condensed, and created a treasure that is now available for anyone to read online, hosted by the Historical Society. “Some people shared deeply moving and personal stories of which I felt privileged to have heard. Knowing they are being preserved and shared with generations gives me much pride and satisfaction.”

Prairie Nursery

High School Acapella Group

Sara noticed that preserving nature is not necessarily a priority during new infrastructure construction. As a lover of the environment, she wanted to find a sustainable way to bring beauty back to the community, create more animal habitats and offset CO2 production.

Beautiful music can be created without pianos, strings and horns. So thinks Rose, who was dismayed to discover her school did not give students extra curricular opportunities to express themselves in song. She changed this by creating an acapella group that all students could join.

Working with the National Heritage Land Trust and her high school, Sara developed a prairie nursery to grow rare and hard-to-collect plants. How does it work? The seeds from these plants are used to replant both species in their natural habitat. It's literally reseeding sustainability! The Land Trust and school will take over care of the nursery in the future.

It's not an easy feat to start something from scratch but that's what Rose did as she discovered her leadership voice! She conceived of a space where students would feel safe and welcome. She created the song arrangements, scheduled practices and organized it all. She even recorded the performances!

“I feel more confident in my own skills and my ability to lead others after doing my Gold Award project.”

“The most successful aspect of my project was the environment that it created. I felt it was a very collaborative and fun environment where all of the members could be themselves.”

Accessibility of the MMSD Summer Food Program

Helping the Karner Blue Butterfly

Summers can be challenging for some families dependent on the National School Lunch Program. Allison's project addressed the inequity of food access to children in the Madison Metropolitan School District during the summer. Allison conducted research to reveal the root of the problem and discovered the Latino community was under served because of language barriers. In fact, it was Allison's work that revealed one solution: to have bilingual staff at each meal site. Allison collaborated with MMSD, REAP Food Group and Community Action Coalition in an effort to better ensure equal access to food for all families.

14

“The greatest skill I developed from this project was confidence in networking.”

Olivia knew the Karner Blue Butterfly was endangered so she took action. Through research, she learned that the Wild Lupine helps sustain the butterfly. Together she and her school district found a safe place to grow these plants. She also developed a program that teaches students about endangered animals that could be living in their own backyard. This program encourages students to be more environmentally conscious of their actions. It also gives them ideas on what they can do to limit the harm they do to the environment. “I learned that time management is something that has to be thought through, and to be flexible to any change that might come up”

Girl Scout Silver Award Skill Building. Leadership. Personal Growth. The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn. The Silver Award represents a girl’s accomplishments in Girl Scouting and in her community as she grows and works to improve her life and the lives of others. Working in a group or individually, girls select projects that help them build skills, explore careers and gain leadership. Girls earning their Silver Awards this year have proven that they are community leaders who are organized, determined and dedicated to improving their communities. These Girl Scouts are true go-getters!

Savannah From your first day as a Daisy to receiving your Gold Award, you've dedicated most of your life to Girl Scouts. We hope you are as proud of yourself as we are of you!! This adventure has seen you sell hundreds of cookies, knocking on doors rain or shine. It had you fearing camp, and made you want to go back year after year once you got the hang of it! Along the way you met some amazing and inspirational women, you spoke to thousands at Girl Scouts 100th birthday celebration, were a troop assistant, a co-leader, you earned your Program Aide, your Religious, Silver, and Gold Awards; not to mention the countless Journeys and badges in between. You've grown into a young woman with the confidence, courage, and character that only a lifetime member of Girl Scouts could have! These traits will always be there to help guide you in the right direction and will help you stand out above many others! You are an inspiration to those that know you and we hope you know that being a Girl Scout is a major reason why!! With all our love, Mom and Dad 23
