BaseCamp Discovery Days LET’S GET OUTSIDE...AT GIRL SCOUT CAMP! Your family and your troop are invited! PUT ON YOUR COAT AND MITTENS AND COME TO CAMP

It’s True! We’re rolling out the welcome mat to all Girl Scout families and troops to come enjoy our beautiful camps HOW IT WORKS Following the lead of state parks, Badgerland is putting out the welcome mat to Girl Scout families on scheduled weekends at both Camp Ehawee and Camp Brandenburg. We’ll have different self-led activities available depending on the weekend and the camp, but you will always be able to hike and enjoy a campfire. Putting the GIRL in Girl Scout BaseCamp Weekends. Most Troop and Family camp events have a badge-focused theme and we’ll provide activity kits (pre-order them) to guide your experience at camp for the day. Come for the full day or a few hours. But do plan on getting to camp this winter and spring. All safety protocols will be observed including masks at all times and social distancing. Additionally, you will explore camp and do activities within your pod of people; only those you traveled to camp with. Sound fun? This is a great opportunity to share camp with your family and the troop. Meet up there for a winter afternoon.

See pages 14-23 in the program listings for monthly Girl Scout camp events.

NEXT UP: Summer 2021 We are optimistic to host girls and their grown-ups for overnight experiences at Camp Ehawee and Camp Brandenburg starting in June. The camps will be one or multi-night adventures in cabins, platform tents, the yurt and maybe even the new Hammock village (fingers crossed). Or pitch your own tent! We’ll have meal options and guided activities including archery and boating. Sound awesome? We know it’s not the same as traditional GS camp but we remain committed to giving Girl Scouts an amazing camp experience this summer. Details on Summer 2021 will be released in February. 4 www.gsbadgerland.org

GIRL & ADULT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR BASECAMP DISCOVERY DAYS These weekends are going to be huge for us and we could use all the help we can get! Looking for something to do or want to fulfill some volunteer hours? Let us know by emailing info@gsbadgerland.org and we'll find the perfect job for you.

LOOK WHAT HAPPENED AT CAMP EHAWEE WHILE THE GIRLS WERE AWAY! WOW! 2020 was a good year for sprucing up.

A team of AmeriCorps volunteers spent two months revitalizing trails, bridges and more at Camp Ehawee. In December, Girl Scout Ambassador and Leadership Camper Karissa Adams, along with her mom, Sue, and sister, Sarah, got a sneak peek of the exciting changes. “The thing that was super, super exciting for me to see was that the bridges over Crystal Creek were replaced,” she said, referring to the footbridge that was washed away several years ago, blocking access to acres of scenic hiking trails. “That means we can go back up in the hill trails again!”

Meet Maple 3 They’re the team of AmeriCorps volunteers from across the U.S. that spent two months rejuvenating our beautiful Camp Ehawee this fall! Here’s what they did: • Cleared Hiking Trails • Added Directional & Educational Trail Signage • Replaced All Trail Stairs and Added Handrails for Safety • Built 3 New Bridges Over Crystal Creek • Expanded & Updated the Archery Range • Restored Primitive Campsites • Expanded Canoe/Kayak Launch Space/Shoreline • Added Makerspace and Interactive Exhibits in Strye Activities Building

Karissa knows Camp Ehawee through and through, spending every summer there for the past decade! What started as an annual tradition with her troop expanded to on-her-own camping sessions with other Girl Scouts from around Wisconsin, and culminating with her completing the Leadership Camper program. “Camp Ehawee was actually my first overnight experience without my parents being there,” she said. “I had so much fun then, and since I’ve tried so many fun things that got me out of my comfort zone and taking risks.” “Camp is an important place for Karissa,” added her mom (and Girl Scout Troop Leader) Sue Adams. “With COVID, we missed getting out there this spring with the Troop like we usually do, so she was really missing it.” Happily for the Adams family and all of Badgerland, Girl Scout properties are reopening this winter! Families and troops are invited to explore Camp Ehawee in La Crosse County and Camp Brandenburg in Dane County. See the monthly BaseCamp Discovery Days starting on 14. “Getting out of your house, getting some fresh air and having fun while exploring new things is good for your social and mental health,” Karissa said. “There’s no better time or place to explore with your family than Camp Ehawee.”

CAMP BRANDENBURG SPRUCE UPS Lots of improvements were made at beautiful Camp Brandenburg, located near Middleton, too! The road to access Lake Katrin and Kinderspeilen was rebuilt and the hiking trails are beautifully groomed and waiting for you. Come see camp with your family or troop.

Badges and Connections One Badgerland Troop’s Story During Pandemic “It has been important to get the girls together because you can’t explore in the same way virtually as in person.” ~ Troop 7166 Co-Leader Nancy Lazzaroni

The troop’s first meeting as new Junior Girl Scouts was a hiking outing. The girls hiked 1.2 miles uphill both ways and earned their Trail Adventure badge along the way!

On one of their urban hikes, they saw people playing disc golf...and decided they needed to learn for themselves!

Q. How Did You “Get Started” Meeting In Person Again? A. Before meeting this fall, I sent a survey out to our troop families to see if they were comfortable meeting during the pandemic. We wanted them to know that meetings would be socially-distanced, masks would be worn and we’d meet outdoors whenever possible. There are some girls who aren’t comfortable meeting in-person, and that’s totally OK! We share a recap and deliver any supplies needed so she can complete the badgework on her own.

Q. Which Badges Seemed To Be Best For Your Outdoor Meetings? A. The girls had a lot of ideas of what they wanted to do, so I let them call the shots! We started the year with the Trail Adventure Badge because we figured it would be fun to explore if we were going to be meeting outside. With all the walking we were doing, they chose to do the Staying Fit badge next. On the hikes there were a lot of natural things we noticed so we decided to do the Outdoor Art Explorer badge.

Q. What Benefits Are You Seeing? A. It has been important to get the girls together because you can’t explore in the same way virtually as in person. Some skills need to be learned by doing instead of watching someone else do them. Plus, interpersonal skills are easier to practice when you are together physically instead of virtually. 6 www.gsbadgerland.org

Is her troop still not meeting? JOIN A VIRTUAL TROOP Badgerland Virtual Girl Scout Troops are in full swing to ensure all girls have access to connections. She’ll get to meet other Girl Scouts her age from across Badgerland Council while earning badges, trying out GS-exclusive activities, and creating a sisterhood that knows no distance. Most virtual troops meet every other week for about an hour. Girls can still stay members of their "traditional" troop...virtual troops are just something extra so she can stay involved and keep earning badges. VOLUNTEERING: Volunteering has never been easier than with virtual troops. Have an extra 2-3 hours a month to spare and want to make a difference from home? Reach out about helping lead a virtual troop! To learn more, head to our website: Www.gsbadgerland.org or contact us: info@gsbadgerland.org | 800.236.2710

Working with the Daisy group has shown me how personally rewarding it is to interact with young children. My experience with Girl Scouts has encouraged me to seek out other service opportunities that allow me to continue encouraging creativity, confidence, and curiosity in girls. Throughout our meetings, I have constantly been impressed by the Daisies’ natural love for learning new things. I was particularly inspired when a guest came to speak to the group about outer space. Hearing the interesting questions that the girls asked and their amazement at the answers was inspiring. ~Allison Lopina, Co-Leader Virtual Daisy Troop 8662

HEY TEENAGED BADGERLANDERS Teen Troop 8669 is online exclusively for high school Girl Scouts. Girls already in troops are welcome, as well as, Juliettes. Meet Isabella, UW student and Badger Volunteer who helped lead a virtual troop all semester. She’s clearly a proud GS alum, too!

Join this winter and you’ll be wrapped in a ton of GS sister support. We’ll do badges and service projects. Girl choice. Interested? email us for the link: info@gsbadgerland.org 7

Troop 7133 of Mazomanie held a blanket drive to collect new and gently used blankets when they heard the homeless shelter had run out of twin-sized blankets.

Hannah C. from Daisy Troop 8098 recenty held a food and clothing drive in Lodi.

GIRL SCOUTS MAKING A DIFFERENCE DURING COVID

Madison E., a Cadette from Middleton, collected more than 80 coats for the homeless for her Silver Award project.

Cadettes in Troop 1163 of Madison practiced using power tools in preparation for their Silver Award project. They’ll be making two “buddy benches” and donating them to a State Park.

Wynter B, a new Juliette Daisy from Delavan, made collection bins for small businesses in her town to collect much-needed items for the local animal shelter.

Anya V. and her troopmates in Troop 9104 decorated and filled 130 goody bags with toys, crafts, popcorn, candy and other fun items and delivered them to the food bank. They also donated face shields to help keep staff and volunteers safe during the pandemic.

Reba of Ambassador Troop 4050 from Cashton tied blankets for the police department to give out as needed.

Junior Troop 7452 used Cookie earnings to purchase and install a Kindness Bench at Milton Public Library's Story Gardens. They also painted a bucket full of kindness rocks available to anyone who needs a compliment, a strong message, or a reason to smile.

Full STEAM Ahead Badgerland girls from all age levels got to dip into Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math world during our STEAM Career Exploration expos in the fall. There were so many activities delighting and amazing our girls incuding creating robotic hands, engineering egg drop devices, exploring ocean chemistry and even developing a GS STEAM app and logo!

Thank you to our partners at Alliant Energy which sponsored the girls’ activity kits.

The Girl Scout Program Difference

Everything a Girl Scout does centers around STEM, the outdoors, development of life skills, and entrepreneurship. These “pillars” align with the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, GSLE. This is our superpower! All these programs and activities are aimed to build girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.

Monthly Program Themes So Girl Scouts is about way more than doing just one thing. It’s everything! We’re celebrating the Girl Scout year with a special calendar and every month has a different theme. There are specific Badgerland program activities each month that tie in with these themes. PATCHES!

How many will she earn in 2021? Each patch represents a learning and discovery experience for girls. From entrepreneurship with BossGIRL to STEM with Climate Change, to the outdoors and citizenship, these patch programs represent the rich diversity of opportunities available to every Girl Scout.

These are just some of the Girl Scout patches and badges available for Badgerland Girl Scouts to earn this winter and spring. On the monthly program pages, pay attention to the Badge Connections noted with most activities. Whatever a girl is interested in...there’s a badge for that!

National Service Project Alert: FIGHTING HUNGER

Since 1912, Girl Scouts have been doing service projects to make the world a better place. Partner with Girl Scouts around the USA and take on the challenge to battle hunger in your community. Since COVID 19, more than 50 million adults, kids, and families in the U.S. are experiencing food insecurity, a number that may include members of our own communities, friends and family, or members of our troops. Supporting Food Banks does not end with the holiday season. Girls can make a big difference by tackling take-action projects on this issue. Food drives and showing appreciation for front-line staff battling the hunger epidemic are just two ways to participate. See details on this Girl Scouts National Service Project at girlscouts.org AND she can earn this special patch.

LET’S GET MORE GIRL SCOUTS

We believe every girl should have access to Girl Scouts. Can you help us reach more girls? With schools in lockdown and so much uncertainty, our traditional efforts to connect with families are gone. We need your help to connect with families in your school and community. If you have a connection in your community or an idea to help us reach families, please do help! Just send an email and we’ll be in touch with you lickety split. Thanks!
