Celebrating 100 Years of Changing the World Since 1916, Girl Scouts have been making meaningful, sustainable change in their communities and around the world. The Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn, acknowledges the power behind each recipient’s dedication to not only empowering and bettering herself, but also to making the world a better place for others.
Gold Award History
The Golden Eagle of Merit, the highest award in Girl Scouting from 1916 to 1919, marked the beginning of a long tradition of recognizing girls who make a difference in their communities. Over the last 100 years the names have changed, but the meaning and prestige association with the award has stayed the same: yy 1916-1919 Golden Eagle of Merit yy 1919-1938 Golden Eaglet yy 1938-1940 First Class yy 1940-1963 Curved Bar yy 1963-1980 First Class yy 1980-present Girl Scout Gold Award

Our Highest Award The Girl Scout Gold Award is the most prestigious award that Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors can earn. Fulfilling the requirements for the Girl Scout Gold Award starts with completing leadership prerequisites designed to develop the leadership skills needed to accomplish a Girl Scout Gold Award project. This award represents a girl’s commitment to herself and to her community as she focuses on leadership, career exploration, personal challenges and completes an enduring project that will benefit her community. It takes many hours of preparation, planning and work to accomplish the goals a girl has set for herself through her Gold Award Project. It is notable that only about five percent of eligible girls earn this award! A special note to today’s Gold Awardees: As a Girl Scout, you are part of the sisterhood of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, a global movement comprised of more than ten million girls worldwide who are using their talents to positively impact their communities. With your talent and passion, you can make changes in your community that reach people around the world. Congratulations on your remarkable achievement!

Hannah Butler Troop 4109 La Crosse
Pediatric First Aid Certification First aid is something everyone should know, but not a lot of teenagers do due to the cost. Hannah felt it was especially important for teens to learn first aid because most teens babysit and, as new drivers, they have an increased risk of motor vehicle collisions. To help increase First Aid certification among her peers, Hannah worked with Mayo Health and Gunderson Health Systems to develop a first aid class that teens could take for free. Hannah taught the course with the help of an AHA instructor, demonstrating first aid techniques to save a life or prevent further injury of an adult, child or infant to her peers. It was such a successful program she was even asked to come and teach first aid to a middle school class. “I learned that I can make a difference in helping save lives by teaching some simple skills,” Hannah says. Her efforts will not only help teens be better prepared for an emergency, but could help save someone’s life.
Tessa De Souza Machado
Troop 4309 La Crescent
Tetra Brazil Soccer Academy for Tiny Tots Childhood obesity is a major problem in the United States and Tessa knew that learning healthy habits starts at a young age. To help get kids moving, Tessa developed and taught a soccer program for three to five years olds, which is now run by the Coulee Region United Soccer Association. The kids had fun learning how to play soccer, but also learned about healthy eating habits from Tessa. After each practice, she would provide a healthy snack and talk to them about the food plate and the food pyramid. Tessa also provided handouts for the kids to take home so their parents could help continue their education on healthy eating. Tessa says that organizing Tiny Tots taught her to be a better leader by facing challenges along the way so she could accomplish her vision and goal. 8

Houses for Change
A lot of people think that homelessness is only an issue in large urban areas, a misconception that Mariah wanted to end. She learned that the majority of the homeless population in Grant County are families, and there aren’t enough family shelters in the area to fill the need. Through presentations and awareness events, Mariah helped her community realize that even though they were a rural population, they had homeless families who needed their help. “I learned that kids are more naïve than I ever thought. Many of them didn’t realize homelessness was so close to them,” she says. Mariah worked with her church to start a program that would help provide hospitality for homeless families when a shelter didn’t have enough space. She also worked with Family Promise of Grant County, coordinating donations and creating cardboard houses that businesses could display to collect donations and help increase awareness.
Jamie Engelke Troop 2879 Fort Atkinson
Kits for Kids Jamie aimed to achieve two goals with her project: work with children and help family members spend more time with their loved ones at Jefferson Memory Care. Jamie knew that families with small children would come to visit relatives at Jefferson Memory Care, but would only be able to stay for a short while so the children wouldn’t get bored. To help families spend more time together, Jamie created five kids activities kits, each with a different theme, so children can do different activities each time they visit. Jamie also created a binder with a variety of indoor and outdoor games that families could play together. Jamie says that knowing families can now spend more quality time with their loved ones at Jefferson Memory Care makes her happy.

Teen2Teen Claire found that while there are lots of resources available for parents of teenagers with eating disorders, anxiety disorders or depression, very few existed for the friends and siblings of girls affected. Claire decided to change that by building an app called Teen2Teen. The app, available for download at the Google Play store, helps friends and siblings understand how to better support their loved one, because sometimes the hardest thing is knowing what to say or do. “The process I went through to finish the project forced me to put to words all the emotions I had been bottling up while my sister was struggling with her eating disorder,” Claire says. She hopes that her app will help teens worldwide become better informed on mental illness and how they can help their friends.

Accessibility for Holy Cross Cemetery Some of the community’s most beautiful views can be seen from the top of Holy Cross Cemetery at St. Paul’s Catholic Church. Unfortunately, due to the steep climb not everyone could enjoy the view, so Mary decided to make it more accessible. Working with area landscapers, friends and family she designed and built a low-step stairway to the top of the cemetery, which has a vista of the lake. She also added landscaping to make the stairway more attractive. “There is one man that goes to the cemetery every day to see his wife and told me how much what I was doing meant to him,” Mary says. Now with easier access, Mary hopes the cemetery becomes a place where people will want to visit at times other than during funerals.

Putting a New Face on Holy Cross Cemetery When the former caretaker of Holy Cross Cemetery became ill with cancer, the grounds and entrance sign fell into disrepair because he was not well enough to do regular maintenance. To help restore the cemetery’s entrance to its former beauty, Heather designed and built a new sign and updated the landscaping. For the landscape, Heather chose perennial flowers that are low maintenance and deer resistant. The flowers also have meanings, such as peonies, which represent healing. “This project taught me the basics of leadership, I had to use a lot of skills I didn’t know I had,” Heather says. Now, when someone is looking for Holy Cross Cemetery, people can look for the large new sign to find it.
Asya Her
Troop 4109 La Crosse
CPR Certification for Teens Early CPR can save a life in an emergency but not a lot of teenagers have the training. Asya wanted more of her fellow teens to have this important life-saving skill, so she worked with the American Heart Association, Mayo Health and Gundersen Health Systems to start offering free CPR classes to teenagers. Asya taught the initial classes herself after becoming certified. According to Asya, the most successful part of her project was inspiring confidence in participants to expand their knowledge and skills. She hopes that having the opportunity to take the class with their peers will encourage more teens to get certified.

Free Little Library With the daily hustle and bustle of life, it’s easy to forget to slow down, pick up a book and read to a child. Abby hoped to change that by installing a Little Free Library in a community park where lots of families visit. After getting permission from the village, Abby spent a weekend building and painting the library. The day she put the library in the ground, there were three families at the park and all very excited to see it being added. Abby is hopeful that through her Free Little Library, the love of reading will be passed down from generation to generation.
Tessa Larson Troop 3086 Evansville
Walking the Stations at Holy Cross Cemetery Cemeteries are not only a place to visit loved ones, but also a destination people can visit to relax and meditate. Tessa wanted to enhance the beauty of one of her local cemeteries and make it more usable by the community. Working with a local woodworking group, Tessa built and installed a Stations of the Cross meditation walk in a little-used area. “After adding the stations and enhancing the natural beauty of the site with redwood stain, the cemetery will hopefully become a place more people and parishioners are comfortable going to,” Tessa says. The project turned the area into a place where faith and natural beauty meet.

K-3 Hebrew Curriculum Redesign As a Sunday School teacher at her temple, Lily was teaching her students Hebrew from the same curriculum she had learned. Recalling how bored she had been when learning Hebrew, Lily decided to update the curriculum, which was over 20 years old. She sorted through the existing lessons, some of which had been lost during a building flood, and developed new lesson plans, vocabulary sheets, flashcards and homework. Lily was also able to teach the curriculum during this school year and correct worksheet typos, change the timing of classes, and modify things the children didn’t enjoy doing. Lily hopes that her updated curriculum will inspire more children to continue their Jewish education.
Auguste Rogstad Troop 4182 Sparta
Promoting Proper Dental Hygiene When Auguste’s little sister told her she was bored learning about brushing her teeth at school, Auguste’s take-action project started to take shape. She wanted to create a fun, educational resource about proper dental hygiene for kids using superheroes. After talking with publishers and illustrators, Auguste wrote and illustrated a comic-style book teaching young kids how to take care of their teeth. To help spread her message around the community, Auguste did story time readings so kids could meet an author and ask her any questions they had. Through her project, Auguste said she learned a lot about leading a team and the importance of sticking to deadlines. Proceeds from her book are being used to buy dental supplies for free and reduced dental clinics in the area.

Dugout Renewal As captain of her softball team, Mary knows how important dugouts are for player safety. The dugouts at a local field, used by children and adults, were literally rotting, making them unsafe, so Mary decided to repair them. She coordinated a group of volunteers to help tear down the old dugouts and rebuild a new, safer area for players to use. To help the dugouts last through multiple Wisconsin winters, she chose low-maintenance, long lasting building materials. Battling snow and cold weather, Mary made sure that the dugouts were completed in time for spring. “I learned that I can do anything I set my mind to,” Mary says.
Lauren Sullivan Troop 2147 Sauk City
Orientation Video Lauren remembers how nervous she was starting high school and after volunteering with the special education department, she realized that students with special needs were even more so. To help ease the anxiety for incoming special needs students, Lauren created an orientation video that addresses many questions they may have. She also developed a reference binder for the students and teachers to use. Lauren says, “I learned that I can make a difference in a special need student’s life. Something that I thought was small could be huge in another person’s life.”

Jenna Tilton Troop 3064 Rockton
Paving the Way to Safety Jenna knows that elementary school dismissal time is very busy and chaotic. She has seen and heard stories about many close calls that have happened with kids in the parking lot and the vehicles picking them up. To help create a safer environment, Jenna distributed information to students and parents about parking lot safety, an issue not commonly addressed. She also built a safe area with benches where students can wait safely to be picked up. The benches are a hit with students, and teachers have told Jenna that the parking lot is much safer.
Evalise Yang Troop 2879 Fort Atkinson
Dress Possible Imagine not being able to attend prom or homecoming because you don’t have the funds to buy the clothes. This was a reality for some of Evalise’s classmates, so she decided to help by holding a formal wear drive. She collected unwanted and lightly used formal wear from the community, then cleaned and repaired the clothes, which were given away at a community event. Anyone who wanted could come and select an outfit for free. “The most successful part of my project was being able to give girls or boys the chance to go to a dance and feel not only beautiful, confident or handsome, but to relieve them of the stress of having to afford formal wear,” Evalise says.

Troop 2368, Madison Sleep Happy
I wanted to help the young patients at American Family Children’s Hospital. I decided to make pillowcases because they can be easily used at the hospital, but also help the patient feel more at home in a strange environment. The pillowcases were simple to make and I was able to benefit a lot of kids.
Jillian Ley
Troop 2368, Madison T-shirts to Toys
It made me sad to see that dogs didn’t have anything to play with while they waited to be adopted at my local Humane Society. So I came up with the idea to make dog toys out of old t-shirts. I ended up making 49 toys to donate the first time. Later, I started teaching other people how to make the toys, and now, we have even more toys to donate.
Lexi Hillebrand Celia Jones
Troop 2423, Cross Plains Cross Plains Ice Skating Rink
The rink didn’t have many places for people to sit, so we decided to make an Aldo Leopold bench. We also donated rubber mats to place around the rink so ice skaters could safely get around when wearing skates.
Amanda Hellenbrand Kate Johnson Troop 2423, Cross Plains Clean Up Middleton
Our project addressed the issue of litter and pollution. We created a group of clean-up events at different locations in Middleton and invited people to come help pick up litter and other objects that could hurt the environment. It is a good thing to help keep your community clean.

Our Take Action project was inspired by a Journey we did, and we wanted to help a local place. We built benches, planted a butterfly garden and flowers, and made educational signs for kiosks at the Stewart Lake Park. We hoped to add to a beautiful natural area for people enjoy.
Troop 4050, Cashton Basketball Court
My take action project was adding a basketball court to Cashton Park. The park had courts for volleyball, tennis and softball but not basketball. Since basketball is my favorite sport, and the favorite sport of many other kids, adding a basketball court would make the park more fun for everyone.
