in celebration of VOLUNTEERS

Girl Scouts is volunteer led. Always has been. Always will be. Volunteers are the ones who make the magic. They plan the meetings, book the troop outings, organize the supplies, manage the mischief, schlep the cookies, mentor the girls and, along the way, find themselves smiling, learning, and filling their own cups with that electric energy of Girl Scouts. Nothing sounds sweeter than the joyful buzzing of a bonded troop of girls coming together in community. All made possible because their troop volunteers said yes to the call to service.

Let’s all find time to say thank you to our Girl Scout volunteers. Send a card, a text, an email, a message, a letter. Let them know what they do matters.

HERE’S AN IDEA

You are invited to nominate your special volunteers for an official Girl Scout award. It will mean the world to them to know they are seen and appreciated. See details on page 19 and make someone feel special. On My Honor.

In 2022, Badgerland Girl Scouts recognized TWENTY NINE volunteers with awards at our special On My Honor event. The seven pictured here are just a few of the exceptional people who make the world a better place through their service to Girl Scouts.

Left to right: Heather Haas, Julia Pooler, Rikki Klassy, Michelle Hughes, Holly Droessler, Marie Banks, Tayler Spannknebel.

The Leader’s Perspective

WHAT’S IT LIKE TO BE A GIRL SCOUT TROOP CO-LEADER?

Meet a leader who just began and another with graduating seniors.

Some things can be harder when you’re based in a more rural area. Consider starting a Girl Scout troop in a small town. Jessica Nephew overcame those hurdles when she launched Daisy Troop 7661 in Black River Falls over the summer. Less than six months later, her troop is active doing all kinds of Girl Scout activities including field trips to the Fire Department, earning Daisy petals and performing service projects. Jessica has advice for anyone considering taking on a volunteer role, “Take the leap!” Jessica said she wasn’t so sure of herself in the beginning but she’s grown into her leadership position, “I was very nervous when I signed up. But each leader and troop are a little different so just find a setup that works best for you and your girls.” Beyond the troop, Jessica and daughter Olivia frequently attend Badgerland events including Daisies Activate, a free monthly program for Daisies and their grown-up.

It’s been 13 years since Amy Koclanes went to a Girl Scout sign-up party with her then-kindergarten daughter in at Monroe Elementary in Janesville. Today Kayleena is a graduating senior and Amy is reflective looking back on leading a troop of noisy Daisies who were all about crafts to today’s independent teenagers all about travel. “I became a leader because I wanted her to have the experiences I knew she’d get here; no one else would lead so I did. And my life is transformed because of it,” said Amy. “I’ve done stuff I never would have done. Everything from the bug badge to international trips.” The troop now is all about experiences —zip lining, skiing and traveling to London, Paris, and Costa Rica. They’ve already booked two summer trips including a cabin in the woods and travel to Belize. “Let me say Girl Scouts has truly broadened my horizons!” said Amy.

“The girls

helped me as much as I’ve helped them.”

“Seeing that passion and excitement ignite in the girls is unbelievable!”

You’re in for a Tree-t! Badgerlanders will unite to celebrate Earth Day by planting trees. On this day, you’ll re-treeve your own sapling, a baby tree, to plant and care for. This action will have a huge impact on your community— your tree will beautify the area where it’s planted and, most importantly, will help the climate by producing oxygen and filtering pollutants to make the air cleaner. Your tree will also help preserve water in the soil. What a re-Leaf! Register to reserve your free sapling to take home and plant.

Let’s hear it from the girls... Meet a few Badgerland cookie entrepreneurs!

Dyuthi M.

I wanted to exceed my goal of 400 boxes, and that desire to sell more than I planned got me motivated. Something I got better at was my math skills because you need to be on your toes while calculating how much the customer owes and giving change.

Anne M.

One of my favorite cookie season memories is dancing with my mom while doing a cookie booth!

Addison B.

One tip to share is that you should never be scared to go for your dreams and don’t let people drag you down and get in your way of fulfilling your dreams. Another tip is don’t be afraid to be in public and sell cookies. Everybody loves a Girl Scout!

Quinn T.

I’m better at talking to people now and not as shy.

ShaKyra K.

Most of my sales come from people I’ve never met. With so much going on in the world, cookie sales made me see kindness is out there!!

Etta

K.

Someone bought 20 boxes at once from my booth! My tip? Book lots of booths.

Samantha N.

Here’s my hack to being a (long-time) top cookie seller: Just get out there and give it your all!

Saniya G.

Many people said NO, and so many people said YES. So, I learned to take the No’s better. And I learned about $2 bills; I didn’t know those existed.

Autumn S.

Selling Girl Scout cookies has helped me with feeling more comfortable talking to people. The best experience for me as a Girl Scout is trying new things and getting badges with the other girls in my troop.

Ways to Sell Cookies

Your family will decide the best way to participate in the cookie sale. Girls in the same troop do not have to sell the same way.

• DIRECT SALE

Go door-to-door in your neighborhood and sell to family and friends.

• BOOTHS

Troops sell lots of cookies setting up a card table at high-traffic businesses.

• ONLINE

Set up her Smart Cookies store and customers can order that way. Local customers can choose for her to deliver their cookies in person and far-away customers can pay to have them shipped.

• TAKE ORDERS

You’ll have a cookie order sheet and collect orders from family and friends and then deliver them to customers in April.

HIGHLIGHTS THIS YEAR

THE ACTUAL COOKIES

Raspberry Rally are brand new cookies. Only sold online with direct shipment. Girl Scouts will not have Raspberry Rally cookies available to sell in person. They are available in her online store. Did we mention they’re super fruity, crispy, and yummy!

Shortbread cookies are now Trefoils

Same recipe. Same shape. New name. It tastes the same but it’s now named Trefoils because that’s the shape!

Updated Caramel Chocolate Chip Recipe

The gluten-free cookie is now made without eggs or butter and still gluten and nut free.

THE COOKIE BIZ

Cookie Prices

Each package is sold for $5. EXCEPT gluten free which are $6 each. Not all troops stock gluten free cookies; ask your troop leader if you have them.

Troop & Service Unit Profits

Troops earn at least 74¢per box sold. The more boxes sold, the higher the troop proceeds. New this year are SU cookie profits! Page 30.

Council-Supported Shipping Subsidy

Badgerland picks up half the cost of shipping when your online customer orders between 9-12 boxes to be mailed to them. We’re holding hold the customer price to $7.49.

5 Skills Girls Gain Selling Girl Scout Cookies

The cookie sale allows troops to work toward a shared goal, build troop funds, and for girls to gain an entrepreneurial edge. Entrepreneurship builds curiosity, confidence, and problem-solving skills. They get to run their own small businesses in a safe space. Along the way, they’ll gain five core skills.

GOAL SETTING

Girls start by setting a personal cookie sales goal. Then, together, they work to set a troop goal. Next, they work with their family and troop to develop a plan to achieve those goals. This matters because girls need to know how to set and reach goals to succeed in school, jobs, and life.

MONEY MANAGEMENT

Girls take orders, count money, and make change. They reconcile inventory and deliver the correct payment to their troop leaders. Managing cookie funds helps them understand managing their personal finances and learn responsibility.

PEOPLE SKILLS

By talking to customers, girls learn to become good listeners and communicators. They build strong relationships with their sister Girl Scouts while they work as a team. While interacting with customers, girls’ self-confidence flourishes in all areas of her life.

DECISION MAKING

Girls decide how to market their cookie sale and when and where to sell. They work as a troop to decide how to spend their earnings. When girls practice and implement decision-making, they begin to see the impact of their choices and see themselves as confident leaders capable of making big and small decisions.

BUSINESS ETHICS

Girls are responsible for managing their own cookie businesses, handling money, meeting deadlines, while following through with customers. The world needs more ethical leaders and we can count on Girl Scouts to lead the way.

29
It’s Cookie Time Guide

PHILANTHROPY

Ways girls get to experience being philanthropic through her Cookie Sale.

Troop Cookie Share Philanthropy

Customers who want to support Girl Scouts but don’t want cookies can buy them to be donated. This program is called Cookie Share. Each troop decides on a local nonprofit organization they want to give cookies to. Cookie Share cookies are included in the girl's total and will count toward her rewards.

Girl Philanthropy Donations

Girls have the choice between a rewards item or making a donation to a nonprofit. This year’s beneficiary is related to supporting dolphins. Girls will support dolphins living at Brookfield Zoo near Chicago. Girls who choose this reward earn a unique Badgerland Cookie Philanthropist patch.

Cookies on Social Media Policy

• Families (and Girl Scouts over age 13 with parent permission) can advertise their sale on their personal social media sites, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube.

• Girl Scout Cookies may not be advertised or sold on online auction or sales websites - including eBay, Craigslist, community buy/sell/trade sites and Facebook Marketplace.

• A good rule of thumb: only people who know the girl or her family personally should see her cookie sale information.

The Cookie Program Makes Girl Scouts Possible

30 www.gsbadgerland.org
100% of the Cookie Program proceeds benefit Girl Scouts in Badgerland. Profits from the Cookie Program stay here and are the largest source of income for girl programs, volunteer trainings, and more. Camp Ehawee

Mindoro, La Crosse County

Camp Ehawee (pronounced e-how-e) is home to a swimming pool, nature trails, archery range, athletic fields, an arts building and STEM activity center. Ehawee campers canoe on a tributary of the Black River and creek hop at Crystal Creek. There is an impressive amphitheater, performing arts and nature centers.

Ehawee Featured Activities: Archery, Ax Throwing, Canoing, Swimming, Hiking, Field Games, Performing Arts, Geocaching, Orienteering

Camp Brandenburg

There’s yummy food, walks in the woods, exploring the slough, paddling the waters, flag ceremonies, swimming pool games, and cabintime wiggles ’n giggles. CHALLENGE YOURSELF.

June S.

June spent three weeks at Ehawee last summer and is coming back for more this year.

“My favorite part of camp is meeting new friends and having fun. Some of the stuff I loved last year was making star charts and doing nighttime pranks and all the messy activities like the slip ‘n slide through paint. What I learned at camp is that it is always important to try new things. This summer I am coming not only as a camper but also as a Program Aide because I think it will be fun to learn new leadership skills and help other campers enjoy their time there.”

Jeanette R.

Wow Jeannette tried all the things a year ago when she did two weeks at Ehawee, a STEM GS day camp, and CampHERO. She loved it all!

“My camp highlight was meeting all these amazing people who were there with me. I learned last summer that I was braver than I thought I was because I was away from my family for the very first time. One of my favorite experiences was when we took these stole then ate these super delicious muffins during a midnight mischief caper. And one of my fondest memories is making my first s’more! My advice to future Girl Scout campers is don’t think about the people you left behind. Just focus on the fun that awaits you.”

MEET Olive A.! Badgerland Program Aide Camper

What was your favorite part about being a Leadership Camper?

Well, I love camp in general because it's a place where you can go with no strings attached. Meaning that you can be whoever you want and make friends right away. But my favorite part about being a leadership camper was probably learning how the world of camp counselors worked, and getting to try it out.

Did you learn anything new about yourself?

I learned that I appreciate being able to escape from the stress of daily life and summer loneliness and just be happy and make new friends! :)

How was it different being at Leadership Camp?

Leadership camp is much like Resident camp. Your days will be spent inside, outside, doing crafts, swimming, and more. However, in a leadership camp, you are also expected to be a role model for resident campers. This means watching what you say and do, so it might be difficult to get used to.

Did you learn things last summer that you can put into action in your regular life?

At camp I learned some strategies that are used to promote an inclusive and equity-driven summer camp. I thought about these ideas a lot. After camp, I used one in particular when thinking about what I should do for my Gold Award. The idea was to always think about how you can make activities more inclusive, and keep it fun and engaging for everyone.

Okay, we’re eager to hear what is the very best part about being a Girl Scout for you?

I love being a Girl Scout because I can participate in a program that wants me to succeed and be a leader. It feels good to do good, and earning badges is fun too. :) As a Non-Binary Girl Scout, I also love being part of a community that is constantly dedicated to helping marginalized groups succeed and have skills that help them throughout their lives.

ADVENTURE PODS

weekend camps for a girl and her grown-up

You can bunk at Hilltop or be rustic in a cabin at Forest Glen or go all-in on outdoor sleeping at Lake Shore with a tent you bring or a ShiftPod that we’ll set up for you. Book early as some spaces fill up fast. Adventure Pod camping makes for a memorable weekend; it’s a summer tradition for lots of Girl Scout families. Will you come together? Adventure Pods = Family Time

Fiona, Lilly & (mom) Alicia C.

Alicia decided to make it a special weekend with her two Girl Scouts grades 2 and five. And what a time they had!

“ I learned about my daughters’ fierce determination when trying something none of us had ever done before while we were on the lake learning to canoe. It was a great time!” ~ ALICIA

“Camp together was a lot of fun. We tie-dyed and shot slingshots and those were fun. My favorite part of the weekend was making new friends because I met a new friend. I would love to go again with mom because I’m not sure I am ready to do camp by myself yet. “ ~ FIONA

Sophia & (dad) Martin W.

“We did painting, canoeing, water bottle rockets, geocaching, and hiking. We will definitely do this again and are very interested in bigger adventures together!” ~ SOPHIA

The best part was getting to spend time with my daughter and make memories. It was my third time at Girl Scout’s My Guy & I camp and I’ve loved each one! This summer, I learned that my daughter could be a great camp counselor in the future. She had many of the girls singing camp songs in the middle of the day and they’re loving it!” ~ MARTIN

TROOP

SO THIS IS WHAT TROOP CAMP LOOKS LIKE!

Picture this. It’s 83 degrees on a summer evening with a twinkling sky and there you are lying on your back with your troop besties beside you. After mapping the night sky, you wander over to the blazing campfire to sing, tell stories, and eat s’mores. And then, when it’s really dark out, you’ll put on your glow necklace and grab your glow stick because it’s time to get groovy with the traditional glow dance. Eventually it’s time to turn on your flashlight and hit the trail to your bunk site. You’re tired because it was a non-stop day with the target sports and water fun and hiking. Phew. You can’t wait to get to sleep because you know you get to do it again tomorrow! And every step of the way, there are your troop sisters and troop leaders.

Here is the Troop Camp you asked for! These outings are perfect for first-time troop camp outs. Our camp staff will help lead badge-earning activities and sprinkle camp magic to ensure a purely delightful Troop Camp.
