LGBT VENUES SIGN UP TO 'SAFE SPACE' DROP-IN AREAS
TRUST & CONFIDENCE SURVEY 2013-14 REPORTS FINDINGS.
Brighton & Hove LGBT Community Safety Forum (LGBT CSF) teams up with local businesses to create 'Safe Space' drop-in areas.
) The results of the 2013/14 Brighton & Hove LGBT Trust & Confidence Survey are now live online. The findings and recommendations drawn from them were presented at a quarterly meeting of the Brighton & Hove LGBT Community Safety Forum (LGBT CSF) on Wednesday, October 28, 2015. The idea for a Trust and Confidence Survey came out of Brighton & Hove LGBT CSF’s public meetings during 2012. LGBT groups and individuals indicated that hate crime was a significant factor in the city, and wanted an annual survey to measure baseline levels of trust and confidence in police and council services, to deal with this situation.
) The Brighton & Hove LGBT CSF have announced a new initiative to create 'Safe Space' reporting areas within the LGBT Village in the St James’s Street area of Kemptown where many LGBT people socialise. The team of eight elected community volunteers have been working with local businesses over the past few months to develop the initiative.
They were also mindful of the Police Survey: Sexual Orientation and Transgender Related Incidents - Understanding Under Reporting and the Count Me In Too survey report from 2007.
Anyone who experiences a hate crime or incident while out and about in the ‘Gay Village’ can go into one of the participating venues and either receive information to help them report the crime or be assisted in contacting the police directly. This, along with a new online LGBT CSF reporting form, will enable a victim to submit information anonymously or with advocacy via the LGBT CSF’s Report It! Project, directly to the police.
) The Brighton & Hove LGBT CSF is an established, independent LGBT forum of eight elected unpaid volunteers working with the LGBT Community to address and improve safety and access issues throughout Brighton & Hove. They have no paid workers. The LGBT CSF undertake cultural, educational and social safety community activities and LGBT community/inclusion and accessibility initiatives. The LGBT CSF was formed to give the community a much-needed voice on a wide range of safety issues in Brighton & Hove. They exist to act as a bridge between the LGBT Community and statutory service providers such as Brighton & Hove City Council and Sussex Police and to enable there to be more accountability and transparency of the services provided to all LGBT people in the city. The Brighton & Hove LGBT CSF hold quarterly public meetings. The next one will take place on Wednesday, February 10 at the Queens Hotel.
VENUES OFFERING ‘SAFE SPACE’ ) Venues agreeing to be part of the 'Safe Space' initiative so far include: Charles Street Bar, the Queens Arms, the New Steine Hotel, Legends Bar and Hotel, Bar Revenge and Revenge.
BILLIE LEWIS
Billie Lewis, elected Chair of the Brighton & Hove LGBT CSF, said: “I’m really pleased that this initiative is now taking place. As volunteers we’ve worked tirelessly to make this happen. It’s been made very clear to us that the community want more support in reporting hate crime and we intend to deliver on that. We’ll be available to assist a victim in presenting their complaint to the police or presenting it on their behalf anonymously. “We’re aware that some licensed premises are cautious about calling the police to their venues, but we have reassurances from the police that the call centre will be made aware of any establishments taking part in this project and this will flag up when a call is made so as not to reflect negatively on any licensed premises who is giving support to a victim of hate crime." For more information, visit: www.lgbt-help.com Businesses can sign up to participate in the 'Safe Place' initiative by calling Billie Lewis on 07827 811454 or by emailing info@lgbt-help.com

IMPROVING LGBT SAFETY & ACCESS
KEY FINDINGS OF 2013-14 SURVEY INCLUDE: • 39% of respondents said they had experienced one or more incidents of verbal abuse, sexual abuse, bullying, physical violence, cyber-bullying, negative comments, criminal damage, harassment or teasing with the majority (26%) stating that they have experienced negative comments.
• 56% of respondents reported that these incidences took place on the street with 75% being committed by strangers. • One of the main themes raised by respondents in relation to the police and council was that they would like to see a more visible police presence on the streets, particularly in known popular LGBT areas. The findings suggest that the increased police presence in these areas might see a reduction in street crime. • When asked what they would like to see in Brighton & Hove in the future 45% of respondents stated that they would like the police and service providers to have LGBT awareness training.
• The theme of education and training was echoed strongly when respondents were asked to comment about what they felt would improve safety in Brighton & Hove for LGBT communities. Several respondents commented that the police and council staff needed to have “more training and a greater understanding of LGBT issues”.
HOW WELL ARE CRIME REPORTS DEALT WITH? ) When asked how well reports of abuse, discrimination and safety issues in Brighton & Hove were dealt with by different agencies, the most significant finding was about victims not being updated about progress on their case.
• Of the respondents that reported a crime to the police 67% were not sure of the outcome and 0% of the reports ended in conviction. In the 2012/13 survey 8.5% resulted in a conviction.
• 44% of respondents stated that they didn’t report an incident because they felt it wasn’t serious enough and this was echoed in some of the comments where respondents made reference to the fact they may have got used to name calling and didn't see it as a hate crime.
GSCENE 7
Billie Lewis, the elected Chair of the LGBT CSF, said: "It’s important that the LGBT community feels safe. With more cut backs looming it is important that statutory service providers show they take our concerns seriously and have a plan in place to deter and prosecute perpetrators of Hate Crime. “A large majority of people have indicated that they would like to see more LGBT awareness and training within the statutory services. This may well be happening already, but there seems to be some confusion within the community on what training takes place, how it is implemented and how the level of training is maintained.
ERIC PAGE
“I have invited both the police and the Partnership Community Safety Team to attend our public meeting on Wednesday, February 10 to discuss how complaints of Hate Crime and incidences are dealt with and actioned." Eric Page, the council’s Community Safety Officer, said: "Brighton & Hove City Council and the Partnership Community Safety team are grateful to the LGBT CSF for undertaking the survey for another year and sharing the findings. It's an important source of feedback and fresh data regarding the LGBT communities in the city and their experience of services and accessing services offered by the Partnership Community Safety Team, the council and our partners. “The survey’s results highlight areas where the local authority can do better and building on the findings of the previous survey, and the recent Trans Needs assessment, the findings are an important tool in helping us better focus services to identified needs and also directing us to areas of work with the LGBT community that are currently not taking place but the community identifies as important. In a time of diminishing resources and budgetary contractions it is helpful to have up to date data to inform work that affects the city's wide and diverse LGBTQ communities.
CHIEF SUPERINTENDENT NEV KEMP
“It is encouraging to see amongst the results, quotes and findings that there are some areas of work where we are successfully reaching vulnerable communities and treating them with respect and consideration, but as always with trust and confidence this is an on-going process of engagement where we will only be judged on the work we successfully achieve." Chief Superintendent Nev Kemp added: "I am pleased that overwhelmingly those from LGBT communities who reported incidents and crimes to Sussex Police were pleased with how we dealt with them. I would like to see more reporting of incidents to us but I understand that there are many reasons for not doing so and this survey shows that when we are told, we usually get our response right and provide a good service that supports the victim. “We have come a long way in improving trust and confidence with LGBT communities over the years and I want everyone from those communities to know that we stand with you and if you need us, we will be there for you. I would like to thank the LGBT CSF for their work and for making this survey possible and I am pleased that we were able to make a contribution towards the cost of the survey." The Brighton & Hove LGBT CSF hold quarterly public meetings with their next Public Meeting taking place on Wednesday, February 10. CIVIL PARTNERSHIPS:10 YEARS ON
ADOPTIONS BY SAME-SEX COUPLES IN BRITAIN RISE TO RECORD HIGH ) New figures published by Department for Education last month, show that adoptions by same-sex couples accounted for 8.4% of all adoptions in England in 2015.
Since the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act came into force, the number of people in England and Wales registering civil partnerships has fallen by 70% according to the Office for National Statistics and many same-sex couples in England and Wales are now converting their civil partnerships to marriages. Civil partnerships remain the only option for same-sex couples in Northern Ireland. There are also calls, in the form of the Equal Civil Partnerships campaign, for civil partnerships to be opened up to opposite-sex couples.
DR ADAM JOWETT
Dr Adam Jowett, lecturer in social psychology in the University’s Centre for Research in Psychology, Behaviour and Achievement, said: “When civil partnerships were introduced we conducted a similar study. Many people we spoke to treated their civil partnership as a marriage, and used the language of ‘marriage’ although some people didn’t want to model their civil partnership on heterosexual marriage. This new study is seeking to find out how the landscape has changed, what these two forms of legal recognition mean to samesex couples, and how it’s affected their relationships and family lives.”
In 2010, adoptions by same-sex couples accounted for less than 4% of all adoptions in the country. For the first time adoptions by married same-sex couples are included. There were 450 adoptions in England by same-sex couples in 2015. In Wales there were 30 - a six-fold increase in the past four years. In Scotland, in 2014 there were 17 adoptions by same-sex couples. In all three countries these are the highest recorded figures to date.
Welcoming the news, Tor Docherty, Chief Executive of New Family Social, said: “It’s key in every adoption case that the needs of the child are paramount throughout. It’s fantastic that adoption agencies increasingly recognise the skills that LGBT people can bring as parents to meet those children’s needs."
TOR DOCHERTY
) Researchers from Coventry and Worcester Universities are asking same-sex couples from across the UK to tell them about their views and experiences 10 years on from the introduction of the Civil Partnerships Act 2004. Researchers from both universities are looking for couples who are currently, or have previously been, in a civil partnership or same-sex marriage to take part in their online survey to find out what these different options mean to them.

ALEX & RICHARD
MOVING ON! ) Alex Matthews and his partner, Richard Dene-Morel said goodbye to friends and customers at a farewell party at the A-Bar on Christmas Eve 2015. You will still see Alex around for a short while in January while he hands over the reigns of the bar. Alex and Richard took over the ABar on Brighton seafront in January 2012 and between them have made it a popular meeting place for a more mature crowd. The couple have been together for 13 years; Alex worked previously at Revenge, Legends and the Amsterdam while Richard worked at Kruze and the White Horse before taking charge in the kitchen when they returned to run the A-Bar. In 2013 Richard won the Golden Handbag for Favourite Sunday lunch. Together they managed their own pub The Bib & Tucker on Elm Grove before returning to the gay village in 2012.
JAMES LEDWARD
Paul Kemp, Director of Pride, said: "Alex is one of the good guys and was very helpful in assisting Pride make the Village Street Party safer over the last two years."
PAUL KEMP
Alex chaired the Gay Business Forum, the Village Pub Watch, sat on the council's Licensing Strategy Group as well as being on the committee of the Brighton & Hove LGBT Community Safety Forum.
James Ledward added: "Alex has been more than just a licensee, he understands the responsibilities that go with earning your living from this community. He worked very hard over the last few years to encourage LGBT bars and clubs to work together, an important but thankless task. He has spent hours of his time, voluntarily supporting the police and council on the Licensing Strategy Group to benefit all the other gay bars and clubs in the village. He was also a great supporter of the important work of the LGBT Community Safety Forum. I wish him and Richard all the very best for the future.”

NATIONAL SWITCHBOARD LAUNCH GP POSTER CAMPAIGN ) Switchboard, the national LGBT+ helpline, has teamed up with Channel 4’s Dr Christian Jessen for an unprecedented national GP programme. Over the last 12 months the national charity, Switchboard, has been working on an ambitious project to send a Switchboard poster to every GP surgery in the country. Switchboard will be posting 10,000 posters to clinics to raise awareness of the types of support on offer to members of the LGBT+ communities, their friends and families. The poster is accompanied by a letter of support from Dr Christian Jessen, well-known TV personality from shows including Embarrassing Bodies. The poster campaign has been made possible with the support of global law firm, Norton Rose Fulbright, which printed the 10,000 posters free of charge. Switchboard, whose high-profile patrons include Tom Daley, Mark Gatiss and, most recently, the writer and broadcaster Vicky Beeching, runs a national and confidential helpline and online instant message service, staffed entirely by volunteers who are there to support the LGBT+ communities and anyone who has questions around sexuality and/or gender identity. The poster details some of the reasons patients might want to contact Switchboard, such as sexual health, family relationships, coming out or gender identity.

With the tagline, Offering calm words when you need them most, the poster also features the different ways people can contact Switchboard, including the contact number for the help line, 0300 330 0630, and web address where users can access instant messaging: www.switchboard.lgbt.

Dr Jessen, speaking about his involvement in the campaign, said: “I’m delighted to be helping Switchboard with this initiative. I know that patients come to see us doctors when they’re not only worried about their physical health, but when they have concerns about their mental, emotional or sexual health as well. Questions about sexuality and gender identity are often associated with teenagers, but these issues can affect people of all ages. I hope doctors display this poster in their waiting rooms so those in need can access the help they need.
“I also hope doctors will find Switchboard useful to refer patients to if they need it.” It’s been a busy year for Switchboard, which has been offering support to the LGBT+ communities for more than 40 years. Last June the charity underwent a major rebrand, changing its name from LLGS (London Lesbian and Gay Switchboard) to Switchboard. Nuala O’Sullivan, the charity’s co-chair, says this poster initiative is another way the organisation continues to help people in the LGBT+ communities, as well as the straight community: “We’re always trying new ways to reach the people who may need some support. We recognise that GPs have lots of priorities that they have to juggle every day, so we’ve launched this campaign to make their jobs, and their patients’ lives, a little easier.” Dave Maher, the charity’s other co-chair, added: “At Switchboard we promote a positive attitude to being lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans. We’re confidential too and welcoming, supportive, non-judgmental. All our volunteers are also committed to discussing safer sex to prevent the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.” Call LGBT+ Switchboard in London on: 0300 330 0630 For more information, view: www.switchboard.lgbt

WWW.GSCENE.COM UNIVERSITY STUDENTS SUPPORT WORK OF LGBT COMMUNITY SAFETY FORUM ) Five students studying for a BA in Event Management at the University of Brighton raised £309.84 for the Brighton & Hove LGBT Community Safety Forum (LGBT CSF) at a Christmas-themed variety performance event at the Queens Arms on Monday, December 7, undertaken as part of their university coursework. The event was created by Ally Events, a student-led group, and hosted by Sally Vate.
HIV CHARITY CELEBRATE XMAS WITH FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS ) Lunch Positive, the weekly HIV lunch club that provides a healthy meal, community and social space for people with HIV, held its Christmas Lunch on Friday, December 18. Ninety-eight people, including members, the entire volunteer team, trustees, and supporters from partner charities, went along to Dorset Gardens Methodist Church. Volunteers cooked a fantastic threecourse meal, and also welcomed three new members who came along for the first time.
The evening began with a talk from Billie Lewis, elected Chair of the LGBT CSF about the work the Forum's volunteers do, followed by an evening of comedy, cabaret and a raffle. Performers donating their time free of charge included drag queens Kara Van Park, Davina Sparkle and Stephanie von Clitz.
tattoo artist James Robinson and a £50 Mark Scott hairdressing voucher. A prize was also awarded to the most festively dressed person attending the event. After expenses the evening raised £309.84, with all proceeds going to the Brighton & Hove LGBT CSF. Billie Lewis said: “It was great working with the students on this project. We were able to give them guidance and support as they developed the event and in return they delivered a fantastic community experience. Their commitment to producing a fun night and raise as much money as possible was commendable. It’s very reassuring that a younger group of allies reached out a helping hand to support our work. We’d like to thank not only the students but the lecturers at the
Local businesses and members contributed towards a Christmas Raffle that raised £260, which covered the costs of the Christmas Lunch and the New Year’s Day Lunch. A lunch club member said: "At the Lunch Positive Christmas lunch this afternoon I was reminded of how much things have changed over recent years. It's only a few years ago that, when I was critically ill, the only substantial meals I ate were those Friday afternoon lunches. Sometimes it took an effort of will to force myself to go, because my mental health was far less stable than my physical health. The food I ate during the rest of the week was nothing in comparison to that one meal every Friday. “One of the ideas of Lunch Positive is to get people to have lunch together and get to know one another. I also know that nowadays I’m the opposite of the kind of person who wants to talk to strangers. I've never been made to feel like I have to 'join in' or anything silly like that. It’s always really friendly and welcoming. I so wish that we can show everyone how amazing those lunches are, and for so many different reasons. It was a lovely afternoon." For more information about Lunch Positive, view: www.lunchpositive.org
A spokesperson for Ally Events, said: “The event exceeded every expectation that all of us at Ally Events had. It was great to see all ages attending, from students to locals at the bar who enjoyed a night of comedy, cabaret and festive fun all in aid of the LGBT CSF. We are also grateful to Billie Lewis, the Queens Arms staff and LGBT CSF volunteers as well as everyone attending for making the event such a success with a great atmosphere” Raffle prizes included a private pod on the Brighton Wheel, a giant Millie’s Cookies cake, a meal for two at Archipelagos, a print by Gilded Cage
university who assessed the students on the night. Our thanks also extend to those who attended and donated prizes and the management and staff at the Queens Arms who opened on a Monday and gave us the venue free of charge.” All monies raised on the night will be ringfenced for the LGBT CSF Safeguarding account. This will enable the Forum to assist vulnerable LGBT people, currently facing homelessness following ‘illegal refusals’ of homeless application decisions for emergency help from Brighton & Hove City Council housing department.

TRANS CAN SPORT A NEW SPORTS INITIATIVE FOR TRANS PEOPLE ) A new project will deliver free fitness sessions to trans people in Brighton & Hove during 2016. Trans Can Sport will support people who feel their transgender identity creates barriers for them to access fitness by providing a series of group sessions for participants at all levels of experience and fitness. Recent local research has found high levels of nonparticipation in physical activity amongst the trans community.
BLAGSS FOOTBALL TEAM
The Brighton & Hove Trans Needs Assessment found that trans people are less likely to report good physical health. The same research found that 83% of respondents do not access gyms or participate in organised sport. The reasons citied included feeling self-conscious, uncomfortable and unsafe, not being able to access a suitable changing area due to gender, having issues with clothing. Other reasons included finding the environment too unfriendly. Crucially many said they were not able to financially afford getting involved.
BRIGHTON & HOVE REPRESENTED AT WORLD AIDS DAY FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT IN MUNICH ) Fourteen teams from seven different nations participated in the 2nd World AIDS Day Indoor Football Tournament, hosted in Munich by Team Munich Streetboys on November 28, 2015.
Rory Smith, Project co-ordinator, said: "I used to feel unable to exercise because of real discomfort and fear surrounding use of the changing rooms and feeling intimidated by other gym users. I'm excited about this project as I know that in the 12 months I've been getting fit, my confidence, self-esteem and wellbeing has improved markedly. I want to others to have this opportunity too."
The initiative will launch in January, with taster sessions before the main project commences in February. All the coaches are trans aware and have experience working with trans clients. Sessions are open to anyone who identifies as trans or feels their gender identity prevents them from getting fit. Places need to be booked in advance. Trans Can Sport will provide sessions for free. All you need is to attend in a pair of trainers. • January 12: Trans Can Fight: Boost your confidence learning boxing and kick-boxing techniques mixed with high intensity interval training. • January 16: Trans Can Lift: Tone up and learn basic resistance exercises to perform them safely and efficiently. • January 19: Trans Can Sweat: Build up a sweat and learn exercises using your own body, so that you do not have to rely of gyms or equipment. • January 20: Trans Can Swim: Release some stress by swimming at a subsidised session as St Luke’s Swimming Pool. • Trans Can Yoga tbc: Great for flexibility and wellbeing For more info and how to sign up, view http://transcansport.wordpress.com Or email Rory: transalliancebrighton@gmail.com Trans Can Sport is funded by a grant of £1,500 from the Brighton & Hove Wellbeing Fund, administered by the Sussex Community Foundation.
Teams from Great Britain, France, Turkey, Germany, Slovenia, Italy and the Czech Republic battled it out on three indoor pitches, with the trophy being won by Vorspiel SSL Berlin e.V. Tournament hosts Team Munich Streetboys were runners up and Brighton, who was represented by a team from Brighton BLAGSS, came a respectable 9th.
VORSPIELSSL BERLIN E.V,
Marquita Smith, personal trainer who will be leading many of the sessions, said: "I've been working with trans people in one-on-one and group sessions for some time now, supporting with a range of health and fitness goals. I'm excited to be able to use my experience and techniques to support Trans Can Sport. This will be an excellent opportunity for individuals who have felt intimidated or uncomfortable to ask for support in mainstream fitness establishments and I'm proud to be apart of it.”
MARQUITA SMITH
RORY SMITH
Trans people face extra pressure to lose weight for commencement of HRT and for surgery. Being told to simply exercise more is unhelpful given the barriers faced by transgender people. The Trans Needs Assessment also found that anxiety is experienced by nearly 80% of trans people. Exercise has been proven to reduce anxiety and boost self-esteem, which is also a problem area for trans people.
The trip from Brighton was organised by Elliot Toms, from BLAGSS, who travelled with some of the squad and supporters to Munich by Eurostar visiting Paris for lunch on the way out and staying a night in Brussels on the return journey. The rest of the team flew from Gatwick and everyone stayed at Hotel Regent opposite the main train station for the duration of the trip. A good choice all round apart from the single beds in double rooms which
Snow White would have been proud of. A first class breakfast and helpful front desk staff made the tiny beds a distant memory. The Golden Bootie Award was won by Besi Dema-Ledward who scored nine goals with Paul Gustafson who scored seven goals taking the runner’s up Carpet Slipper Award. After the tournament all teams dined together at a traditional Bierkeller drinking German beer by the litre and sampling the sausage and pork specialities. Later in the evening
trophies were awarded to the winning teams from Berlin and Munich at NY Club in the city centre, an evening spoilt for some by the bad attitude of the rude bar staff at the club. Special thanks to Cafe Nils who hosted the Friday night draw for the tournament and served some excellent food for dinner including their house speciality of escalope of veal coated in cornflakes. The event was organised by Team Munich Streetboys and 2,100 Euros was raised for the Munich AIDS Association. BRIGHTON'S TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE SERVICE on the Brighton & Hove LGBT Community Safety Forum, said that the death of Vicky Thompson, the trans woman who committed suicide on Trans Remembrance Day after being sent to an all-male prison, amounted to "legal manslaughter". Former court recorder, Katie from Portsmouth, explained she had started transitioning just two years ago and had enjoyed a "fantastic journey to date". Katie said that the community in Portsmouth had rallied round her and given her plenty of support and encouraged everyone present to be positive.
In closing Rory Smith thanked everyone who had helped produce the event and invited friend and allies for a cup of tea and biscuits supplied by Lunch Positive, who provide a community and social space for people who are HIV positive and a healthy meal every Friday at Dorset Garden Methodist Church.

Cllr Pete West, the deputy mayor of Brighton & Hove, read apologies from the Mayor of Brighton & Hove, Cllr Lynda Hyde, who could not attend as she was representing the city at the Remembrance Service for the victims of the Shoreham Air Crash. Cllr West said Brighton & Hove was seen nationally as a beacon of light for their treatment of trans people. He remembered the 271 transgender people who had died in the previous 12 months and urged everyone to report all incidences of Hate Crime to the police.
The Rev Robin Selmes then invited everyone present to create a wall of remembrance to all the trans lives lost in 2015. He said: "Don't forget the people whose names you put on the wall. If no one speaks up, nothing changes. Things need to change. Speak up for the 271 who cannot speak. As you put the card on the wall say ‘I won't forget you’.”
The service was attended by Caroline Lucas, the Green MP for Brighton Pavilion; Cllr Geoffrey Theobald, the Leader of the Conservative group on Brighton & Hove City Council; Cllr Phelim Mac Cafferty, the Convener of the Green Group on Brighton & Hove City Council; and Cllr Emma Daniel, the Labour Chair of the Neighbourhood, Communities & Equalities Committee on Brighton & Hove City Council.

The Mayor of Brighton & Hove, Cllr Lynda Hydes, was joined by the leaders of the Labour, Conservative and Green Groups on Brighton & Hove City Council, Sussex Police Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne, the local Councillors for Queens Park ward, Paula Murray for Brighton & Hove City Council and Chief Superintendent Nev Kemp, the LGBT Champion for Sussex Police.
JAMES LEDWARD
“The fight against HIV/AIDS has come a long way, with treatments now available which mean many people with HIV are living longer and healthier lives. But much remains to be done. Regular HIV tests are important for anyone who is sexually active, as 1 in 6 people with HIV don't know they have it. There's still a huge stigma and a number of myths associated with HIV/AIDS which hamper effective treatment, and globally there are still challenges in providing equal access to treatments.
MAYOR WITH LUNCH POSITIVE VOLUNTEERS
James Ledward welcomed everyone to the event, and highlighted the results of a snap poll for World AIDS Day commissioned by THT, which found that 77% of gay men living with HIV who had responded to the poll had experienced stigma with: 63% of respondents saying it was most prevalent within the gay community; 60% saying it came from online dating platforms and 58% when dating. He reminded everyone that while the Leader of the Council, Cllr Warren Morgan, had committed the city to achieving zero stigma, zero transmissions and zero deaths from HIV by 2020 at the launch of the Martin Fisher Foundation in September, in 2016 everyone should concentrate all their efforts first and foremost on challenging all forms of stigma and discrimination so that at the World AIDS Day Candlelit Vigil in 2016 we would not be listening to similar depressing statistics.
CLLR McCAFFERTY
The Annual Candlelight Vigil and Reading of the Names of those lost in Brighton & Hove to HIV/AIDS brought hundreds to the AIDS Memorial in New Steine Gardens on December 1, World AIDS Day.
“It is still critical to support the organisations who provide advice, treatment and education for people living with HIV/AIDS, and World AIDS Day helps to raise essential funds needed to ensure this vital work can continue. We all have a part to play in tackling the ongoing rise of HIV in the city"
The reading of the names followed then people laid their candles round the base of 'TAY', the Brighton AIDS Memorial. Councillor McCafferty, convener of the Green group on Brighton & Hove City Council, said: “I'm deeply moved to be a part of this event and pleased that I can make some kind of contribution in the fight against HIV/AIDS. It's so important that we remember those who are no longer with us, and support those who are still living with and fighting against HIV/AIDS. Reading the names of lives lost is an incredibly humbling experience, and I hope in some way pays tribute to the amazing people who we have lost.
James Ledward commented after the event: “It is so depressing to find that after all the work that has been done to tackle stigma suffered by people with HIV, this THT poll indicates that much of it comes from within the LGBT community. We need to put our house in order and a good start would be to commence challenging the internalised stigma and poor behaviour that is manifesting itself in sections of the LGBT community locally." Warm drinks were provided by Lunch Positive, the weekly HIV lunch club that provides a healthy meal, community and social space for people with HIV.

CHARCUTERIE BOARD
There are two owners; James Tippett-lles is an experienced landlord who has also worked in the hotel business, while band manager Matt Russell is well known on the local music scene and involved with digital web agency Gingermoon. They have created a stylish local bar, with clean lines, fresh bright colours and great lighting. Chef Nick Roberts, has worked for Terence Conran in London and more recently at Brighton Rock here in Brighton. His cooking is simple, clean and imaginative; his presentation first class. He teases out flavours from the most basic of produce, a rare gift. On our visit we started by sharing a charcuterie board (£11.50) with flint owl bread, caper berries and aioli. An impressive selection of meats, served at the right temperature, slightly moist, the perfect starter. For my main course I ordered bubble & squeak topped with a fried egg, grilled tomatoes, with rocket on the side. Some might think a rather old fashioned choice, but the bubble was excellent, the egg was fried just right and the rocket was full of flavour as were the tomatoes.
RUMP STEAK
) Formerly the Walmer Castle, The Independent on Queens Park Road opened in June 2015 after undergoing a very smart re-fit. Turquoise blue is the featured colour of the bar, which complements the wooden floor and wooden tables and chairs. You could be sitting at home surrounded by your books rather than down the local pub. It is smart but comfy.
The combination of all the elements of the dish gave me one of my best main courses of the year. Simple concept but well executed. Mrs Ledward went for a much grander option. Rump steak with brandy, peppercorn sauce and hand cut chips (£17), served as ordered, medium rare. The steak was tender and flavoursome, the sauce wasn’t too hot or spicy and tomatoes on the vine were a nice touch. Save room for one of Nick's deserts, they are quite spectacular and deserve special attention. The chocolate orange pot with confit orange and biscotti (£5.75) was our pudding of choice. Soft chocolate and perfect confit orange, not too sweet, not too tart. Highly recommended. We also tried the Sticky toffee pudding with caramel sauce (£5.95). Extravagant and not one to try if your watching your waistline. We loved it! If that wasn’t enough we finished with a cheese plate (£11.50) with Brighton Blue, Sussex Charmer, Sussex Brie with chutney and crackers, beautifully presented and breathing to perfection. The Independent is a free house so they can carry whatever beers they want. We skipped wine a tried a selection of beers including Black Eyed Porter, Lucky Jack and Gun Brewery. All very agreeable and strong. The beers change, sometimes on a weekly basis, so ask advice from the bar staff on what is the new tipple of the day. The wine list features a selection of wines from France, Italy, Chile, Argentina, Spain and two sparkling wines from the Ridgeway Estate here in Sussex. Prices start from £16 for an Italian red rising to £40 for a bottle of sparkling pink from Ridgeway. Cocktails are reasonably priced (£7.50 to £8), professionally mixed with premium band spirits. There is a good selection of sherries to consider along with fine whiskies, brandies and a Woodford Reserve Kentucky Bourbon. We’ve eaten at the Independent three times now. Sunday lunch is first class with the roast Sussex topside beef option costing £12.50. If you just want a snack, check out the starter and light menu. All produce is fresh and seasonal which means the menu changes all the time. A big plus for regular customers. Parking in Queens Park is £1 an hour till 8pm when it becomes free. Albion Hill and roads to the north are also free but it can be difficult to find a space.

hours! Fri (1) is New Year’s Day Hangover with Bloody Marys from 12pm.
Karen says: “Although Nan's songs can be comedy she also enjoys a big belter so I also get to sing when playing Nan so as a performer it's a lot of fun. This show is not for the faint hearted, she's a straight talking O.A.P who says all the things you are usually thinking but don't dare to say! Nan has developed into her own character over the years so is now only loosely based on the Catherine Tate version. My own Nan, who died aged 103, was from the East End and one of the funniest loveliest people you could meet so the character was also inspired by her cheekiness! “Charles Street is just such a great place to work. The entire team are lovely and the way in which the nights are run is so slick and professional. The sound is always great and the audiences are always ready thanks to Sally Vate and Rupert. Come and try Nan on for size, it's usually a riot! All I ask is that you join in, warn your pacemakers and turn your hearing aid to T dear!”

known! January is the launch of Don’t Tell Mama (DTM), an exclusive and private LGBT members-only club for over-25s right in the heart of Kemptown. DTM aims to create a safe and enjoyable venue for members of the LGBT communities, their families and friends. A dinky, stylish and intimate private bar, with a small dancefloor, DTM is just big enough to share a drink, meet new mates, bust a groove or hit on! The idea behind DTM is to create a venue that embraces diversity by hosting exclusive events for each and every person of the LGBT community with array of nights on offer. Serge of DTM says: “I aim to create a friendly, unpretentious venue where members can make new friends, share a drink and bust a groove and very importantly to create a venue which welcomes all genders by creating exclusive nights but also to celebrate diversity, where everybody will be welcome.”

Entry for members is free before 11pm/£3 after or £5 for guests.
DJ Screwpulous says: “I was born in Bristol and that's where my DJ adventure began. I was passionate about music since I remember. My first vinyls were from my mum's collection, which was very eclectic! I started to buy my own records in the 1970s and I didn't need any extra encouragement to try mixing music myself. I was soon after playing to anyone who would listen and I've been lucky enough to have had the chance to play very different types of music, depending on the venue and the crowd. I enjoy playing a diverse range of house music for the Men's Room at Subline, which combines the latest chart music and classic house tunes, from funky to a more progressive sound, and I'm always looking to find new remixes to play. This reflects the wide range of men that come into the club every week. So the music will vary depending on the crowd. DJ PROFILE: DJ TRICK Happy New Year all you happy clubbers out there! So let’s get 2016 off to a bright and bouncy start with some words from one of our hardest working fellas behind the decks. Whether he’s accompanying your rollercoaster ride on the pier, making you sweat on the dancefloor at Revenge or G-A-Y or keeping you jumping at Pride, DJ Trick will certainly keep the smile on your face and the twinkle in your toes. What’s your name and did you have a lovely Christmas? I’m Patrick and my DJ name is Trick. And yes, I’ve just had a fabulous Christmas spending time with my family in the Midlands and also having a lot of fun in Manchester… Where do you DJ? I’m on Brighton Pier Radio at the weekends, Club Revenge, Brighton on Friday & Saturday nights, Bar Revenge for Sunday Funday and on Tuesdays, G-A-Y Manchester on Thursdays and I also do special events for Ohso Social and G-A-Y. DJ style? I tend not to stick to one style as reading the crowd is so much fun! Personally I love to go down the pop and R&B route whilst leaving the housier 128BPM+ stuff to the established events and venues. And of course I can never go wrong with some MJ or JT. Favourite tune ever? Britney Spears’ Toxic. Quite simply ‘Pop Perfection’. Tune that always fills your dancefloor? Beyonce’s Crazy In Love... nobody can resist dancing to this. Go on, try!!! Ultimate dream gig? Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears’ dutty private parties circa 2007. No explanation necessary!

I love my Pride Season gigs - the main stages, the after parties, the tequila and glitter. I’m always at Brighton, London and Manchester Prides, working hard (and playing hard too). Tell us a secret? But her favourite role was being the devoted and doting ‘den mother’ of the ‘Tavistock Set’ − her beloved circle of friends and acquaintances who gathered in her ramshackle Covent Garden flat and her caravans in Sussex for 30 years, including Coward himself, Ivor Novello and Joyce Grenfell. The evening will take a decidedly nautical turn, when Actually Gay Men’s Chorus (AGMC) lift the anchor and join LGSO to Sail The Oceans Blue with highlights from Gilbert & Sullivan’s ever popular HMS Pinafore. Joining the Chorus and orchestra on stage will be acclaimed guest soloists performing favourite classics from Puccini, Albinoni, Wagner and Lutoslawski as well as popular Chorus numbers. The concerto will be performed by international concert pianists, Coady Green and Christopher Wayne Smith. This is the first time that there has been a classical collaboration between LGSO and AGMC and everyone involved is very excited at the prospect. Lodge Hill Lane, Ditchling, www.ditchlingmuseumartcraft.org.uk ) THE ANIMALS OF DAVID JONES (until Mar 6), is inspired by three objects from the museum’s collection which feature animals. During Jones’ time in Ditchling he painted a mural on the kitchen wall in his cottage which remains intact to this day, while he was painting the mural he gave a watercolour study to his fiancé Petra Gill. This drawing is now in the museum collection and in this exhibition is alongside a carved wooden bear which Jones made for the son of another Guild member. Within the Guild was the St Dominic’s Press which took as its emblem the hound of St Dominic. Jones cut a woodblock of the hound for the press which was lost until earlier in the year when it was spotted in a London saleroom. One of the more unusual objects in the exhibition is the door to the Guild chapel’s safe on which Jones painted a Agnus Dei, the Lamb of God. Surrounding these Ditchling period works are nearly 70 works including major paintings on loan from the National Museum of Wales and the British Council Collection, a war drawing from the collection of the Royal Welch Fusiliers, Jones’ painted crucifixion from Gill’s chapel at Buckinghamshire home Pigotts, and a whole host of animal drawings, prints and paintings from private homes across the country.

) Edward Gardner and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra’s second volume of orchestral music by LEOŠ JANÁčEK (1854-1928) contains the rhapsody, Taras Bulba, based on a collection of tales by Gogol. The first movement’s romantic cor anglais solo is contrasted with some typically acerbic brass writing, and the death march to the scaffold in the middle movement ending in a wild high clarinet death cry is highly imaginative. Warlike triumphant brass, organ and bells conclude the finale of one of Janáček’s most popular orchestral works. The short single-movement Violin Concerto, The Wandering of a Little Soul, contains music later used in his overture for From the House of the Dead, and has been rescued from incomplete drafts. Violinist James Ehnes performs this rhapsodic work – full of interesting ideas, but you relax into the courtly sound perhaps better seen as an early world, the stylish ornamentation working out of material better and subdued tones of the instrument win you over. Like the guitar, it’s a difficult instrument to hear in live recital as it’s relatively quiet, so it comes over well on a recording, although here I’d say the recorded sound is a little boomy. In 2001 he suffered a nearfatal heart attack and has said: “I grew up overnight. It really did shake me and I’ve toed the line ever since. My clubbing days are over. That dreadful lifestyle I was leading. Out seven nights a week. Out of me mind, smoking, drinking. When you get told by Mick Jagger that you’re a bad influence on the Rolling Stones, it’s time to put the brakes on and call it a day.” Luckily for us, he did and managed to survive and flourish, this fourth edition has his trademark northern candour and his touching humility too, a great read for all the adult family.
) THE ARGONAUTS by Maggie Nelson (£8.99, Graywolf Press). The Argonauts is a genre-bending memoir, a work of "autotheory" offering fresh, fierce, and timely thinking about desire, identity, and the limitations and possibilities of love and language. At its centre is a romance: the story of the author's relationship with the artist Harry Dodge who is fluidly gendered. Oh how I love Maggie Nelson, I remember where I was when I was first made to gasp by one of her books and this new book is astonishingly complex, but also very simple. It’s about love, motherhood, birth, family-making, marriage, relationships, forgiveness and change, although none of these are dealt with in any way you might imagine and the whole
thing is a seriously breathless adventure into stunning nonbinary, gender queer, redefining trans, life-affirming experience and like our LGBTQ lives it’s funny, tragic but emotionally vibrant and as complex as running water. If you only read one book this year, please let it be this one. Nelson’s writing is as effortlessly sinuous as her plots and it twists and shines in the mind, leaving so much more than an echo, it leaves an idea, an impression, a being there. First published to acclaim in Australia, Look Who's Morphing by Asian-Australian writer Tom Cho is a funny, fantastical, often outlandish collection of stories firmly grounded in popular culture. The book's central character undergoes a series of startling physical transformations, shapeshifting through figures drawn from film and television, music and books, porn flicks and comics. ) THE HONEYMOON KILLERS (Arrow bluray). This has to be one of the most extraordinary American films of the 1960s. The only movie directed by opera composer Leonard Kastle, it’s based on the true story of two lovers who rob and murder victims found through lonely hearts ads. The first five minutes seem to herald a kind of John Waters low comedy, complete with terrible dialogue and awful acting. Although Shirley Stoler is not a great actress, as the movie unfolds it shows she has an incredible presence and she gives a weirdly hypnotic performance. As her murderous lover, Tony Lo Bianco is similarly enthralling. The direction is brilliant; as one killing takes place we see nothing but a close-up of the victim’s terrified face. Although bloodless, by showing the subjective horror of what it’s like to know one has only minutes to live, it has to be one of the most terrifying screen murders. GEEK SCENE COMICS & GAMES BY CRAIG STORRIE
GAMES Happy New Year fellow geeks and gamers! After 2015 didn’t seem to produce that many comic book films apart from Age of Ultron and AntMan, this year will make up for that by releasing countless comic book movies over the coming months. Whilst I will go into more detail about each film in this very column during the corresponding months of release, let’s take a quick look at the coming movie calendar to see just how exciting this year will be for comic book fans the world over. ) Deadpool (February). Starring Ryan Reynolds, this reboot of one of Marvel’s cash cows ignores the dreadful appearance of Deadpool in the awful X-Men Origins: Wolverine (even though they’ve kept the same actor) to make a movie much more in line with the character from the comics. The film looks to be funny, fourth wall breaking and violent, which is just like Deadpool should be. ) Captain America: Civil War (May). Ever since the Marvel cinematic universe came into existence, fans have been praying for an adaptation of the hugely popular Civil War storyline from 2006-2007. Feeling much more like an Avengers film than a Captain America one, Civil War sees the Avengers fracture into two opposing factions after an international incident prompts politicians into forming a governing body which the Avengers have to report to. Featuring every single Avenger, apart from the Hulk and Thor, and the first MCU appearances of Black Panther and Spider-Man, this movie will see the Avengers beating the crap out of each other as well as attempting to defeat a new enemy: Baron Zemo. ) X-Men: Apocalypse (May). Taking place in the new timeline created by the events of Days of Future Past X-Men: Apocalypse will see Xavier forming the X-Men in order to defeat the powerful first mutant; Apocalypse himself. Apocalypse will also see the first appearances of mutants such as Jean Grey, Cyclops, Storm and Nightcrawler. ) Suicide Squad (August). I have spoken about this one before in my column so won’t go into much detail. Suicide Squad will see many of DC’s villains band together to defeat an even greater threat to the world than themselves. The film will also be the first appearance of Jared Leto’s version of the Joker!
COMICS Now that Christmas is out of the way and present buying is over again for another year, it’s time to treat yourself and get some time in on the games that deserve your attention. The end of last year saw the release of a few gems that could easily be listed amongst the best games of 2015 so let’s take a look at some of these and why you should be playing them! ) Fallout 4 (PS4, Xbox One, Windows). It’s been too long since a Fallout game was released but the wait has been worth it as Fallout 4 is stunning. Featuring base building, a layered armour system, over 111,000 lines of dialogue and an in-depth crafting system, Fallout 4 is deep, rich and rewarding. It’s also a truly massive game so prepare to say goodbye to your social life! ) Rise of the Tomb Raider (Xbox One and Xbox 360). Continuing on the storyline started in 2013’s Tomb Raider, this sequel sees Lara travelling to Siberia to investigate the secret of immortality after gaining a thirst for discovering the truth behind myths and legends around the world. The game features similar gameplay found in the last instalment whilst improving combat to include more stealth and sneak attacks as well as allowing Lara to swim which opens up more exploration options and greater level design. The game also has a clever weather system and a day to night cycle which human and animal characters react to accordingly. ) Mario Maker (Wii U). Nintendo as a company loves its characters and when they have an anniversary they go out of their way to make sure everyone knows about it. In celebration of 30 years since the first Super Mario Bros title, Nintendo presents us with Mario Maker, a game that allows us to create our own levels and share them with friends and strangers alike as well as being able to make them look like various instalments of the franchise such as Super Mario Bros, World and New Super Mario Bros U. Be careful though as some of the courses out there are fiendish and almost impossible, check YouTube to see just how crazy they can get! ) Assassin’s Creed Syndicate (PS4, Xbox One, Windows). After the letdown that was Assassin’s Creed: Unity, Ubisoft return the series to top form with Syndicate. Set in Victorian London, you take control of two twins, Jacob and Evie, a pair of Assassins out to bring down the Templars of old London town. This game makes you feel even more like Batman than ever before by including the new rope launcher which allows you to rappel up buildings and create ziplines between two points. The game world is 30% larger than Unity’s Paris and consists of various different boroughs such as Westminster, Whitechapel and Lambeth. Ubisoft have thankfully ditched the multiplayer aspect of Unity to focus on the single player campaign and boy does it show!
) Gambit (October). After a lot of ups and downs, we are finally getting a move about the Ragin' Cajun, which again ignores his pathetic appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Starring Channing Tatum, the film will explore Gambit’s background with the thieves’ guild as well as him trying to find his place in the world. The filmmakers also revealed that there is a huge possibility of him appearing in future X-Men films set after X-Men: Apocalypse. ) Doctor Strange (November). Doctor Strange has always been an odd character to get right so fingers crossed Marvel Studios get it spot on. 50 GSCENE
Whether you want your head in the clouds, your legs astride the equator or your entire body in a tortoise shell, Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands have something for everyone says Jaq Bayles. ) With its rainforest, cloud forest, waterfalls and volcanoes, Ecuador crams more biodiversity into its tiny girth than many countries three times its size. Add in the architectural splendour of Spanish colonialism, and an intriguing backdrop of indigenous community life, and you have a breathtaking melting pot that will leave the most hardened traveller giddy with excitement. Sandwiched between Peru and Colombia, Ecuador also lays claim to the stunning archipelago that is the Galapagos Islands, the wildlife of which is widely credited as the inspiration for Darwin’s theory of evolution – and if you’re going to South America, you may as well make the most of it. Having been to Peru a few years ago, we had since regretted not doing the Galapagos while we were there, so needed an excuse to return. For the various reasons mentioned, Ecuador seemed like a good bet, and it certainly delivered. We opted for Intrepid Travel’s ‘Ecuador on a Shoestring’ trip - a cracking option if you’re on a budget and don’t mind the five-hour bus journeys and community lodge stays that go with it. In fact, travelling by bus through the country’s interior is pretty unbeatable for getting to grips with the incredible scenery – as you navigate roads decimated by landslides, your attention is diverted from the apocalyptic possibilities by volcanoes disappearing into clouds, waterfalls cascading down the mountains and valleys dropping way below you to tumbling rivers.
We began our trip in the high-altitude capital, Quito, the old town of which is a maze of cobbled streets dominated by vast colonial churches and museums, bursting with restaurants and alive with street stalls and shoe-shiners on a Sunday when the roads are closed to all traffic except bicycles. From there we took the five-hour journey to the rainforest city of Tena at the base of the Andes, from where a boat ride led us to the Kichwa community where we spent the next two days, exploring the jungle, learning how the locals live and sharing mealtimes with the resident (massive) tarantula. At night, fireflies dance around your lodge and the sky is a wonderfully confusing conflagration of northern and southern constellations. By day, hiking through the forest brings revelations of the Kichwa community’s survival tactics, such as creating a bed that can become a backpack (for carrying the bodies of monkeys felled by poisoned darts) out of giant leaves, or feasting on ants that taste of lemons. All rounded off with tubing down the river – letting the current take you while you ride an inner tube.
A backpacker destination, Baños is a lively, colourful little town, with more operators offering ziplining, white water rafting and canyoning excursions than you can shake a poisoned dart at. When in Baños… we went with both white water rafting and canyoning (abseiling down waterfalls) for the adrenalin rushes and couldn’t have been more impressed with the skills of the Geotours guides – wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them – while others in our party of nine went for the less stressful ‘activity’ of lounging in the hot springs and shopping. From Baños it was back to Quito for an overnighter in yet another five-hour journey, then the next day on to Otavalo, a bustling market town which dates back to pre-Incan times where you can buy any manner of handcrafted goods, from Panama hats to llama wool blankets to bracelets, belts and sandals – all for a snip (the currency in Ecuador is the dollar). We spent another few days in Quito just wandering the streets, checking out the churches and museums, then got ourselves a guide to take us to the charming little cloud forest town of Mindo, home to more than 450 species of birds and the greatest concentration of humming birds in the country. Locals hang trays of sweetened water to attract the tiny, iridescent creatures and you can spend hours
CANYONING
ECUADOR AND THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS
If that’s all a little too back-to-nature for your holiday, head on over to Baños, a town of thermal springs surrounded by lush forest and a centre for every extreme watersport you can imagine. It’s also home to volcano Tungurahua, which decided to wake up while we were there, spitting fire and ash in a vast cloud over the town – a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle for visitors. We were even issued with masks to guard against the ash fallout.
Moving on to the next part of our trip, we decamped to a hotel in the new town of Quito – the lively, if less charming hub of the capital where tourists rub shoulders over happy-hour cocktails and cheap pizzas and tacos. Just a note on the food front, Quito is not the gastro delight that, say, Lima is – it’s too far inland for the ceviche to be comfortable and Ecuadorian food is a tad bland, hence the ubiquitous bottles of chilli sauce that accompany every meal. We mostly ate (very good) Argentinian steak and Mexican food. From there it was a flight to Santa Cruz, the second largest of the Galapagos Islands and home of the famous giant tortoises. Man those critters are BIG. And if the point needed proving there were carapaces lying around that we could easily fit in. We spent a good few hours roaming with the tortoises in the wild, up to our knees in droppings and thankful of the wellies provided. It being the mating season there was a point when it looked like we might see some shell on shell action, but as we only had the one day we didn’t have the time to see it through…
BLUE FOOTED BOOBIES
Indeed, the time of year we were there (late November – there are no seasons in Ecuador other than wet and dry) was general mating season, so we got to see the Blue-Footed Boobies and Albatrosses choosing their
lifetime mates and building nests on Isabela Island, while pelicans roamed the sands, sealion colonies nursed their pups on the shoreline and pilot whales frolicked offshore. Transport through the islands was via boat and we moved at night in very lively water, so if you need your sleep that’s not necessarily recommended. But, on the upside, we got to go deep-water snorkelling in some stunning spots, including Devil’s Crown off beautiful Floreana Island, where green sea turtles and pink flamingos were nesting. Here we swam with turtles, sealions, seahorses, sharks and rays, through rocky outcrops of old volcanoes and amid shoal on shoal of brightly-coloured fish. Everything you’ve heard about the wildlife in Galapagos having no fear is true. You’re told to keep a distance of at least seven feet between yourself and any of the creatures, but this is easier said than done when you’re practically tripping over sealions and marine iguanas at every turn. You can stroll through nesting colonies of the seabirds already mentioned and they don’t bat an eyelid, while the turtles are too busy trying to get ashore through the surf to care. Another highlight was the snorkelling at the stunning Kicker Rock, also known as Léon Dormido (sleeping lion, because of its shape), which towers 500ft above the ocean and where the natural erosion has created a channel between the rocks that houses sharks and rays as well as the ever-present sealions and turtles, while frigate birds hover overhead. The final island was San Cristobal, the archipelago’s administrative centre, the town of which is literally overrun with sealions. Here around the harbour they snooze in the middle
of the road, lounge on street benches and lollop on the pavements. The Galapagos is one of those places I’ve always wanted to visit but never thought I’d actually get to. If you have a thing for nature, it’s an absolute must, but visitor numbers are closely monitored to keep the human footprint down and preserve this remarkable place, and there are rumours it’s going to become even more tightly policed. This, of course, is a good thing – it also meant that at every stop we made, ours was the only group, and there were just 16 of us. It doesn’t come cheap, of course, but you wouldn’t expect that for the trip of a lifetime. And if you’re thinking about going, bear in mind that you have to stump up $100 to gain entry to the national park – and that will likely be on top of anything you’ve already paid. But, lighter of bank balance though we may be, this is a trip we will never forget.
KICKER ROCK
watching them dip and dive just a few inches from where you stand. A hike through the forest got us sightings of toucans, countless butterflies, orchids and the hilariously-named Cock of the Rock (a bright red bird that dances on rocks in the mornings to attract a mate), as well as possibly the world’s most ill-thought out water slide – ending about 12m above a river strewn with boulders at low water. Needless to say we didn’t give it a go.
52 GSCENE China’s human rights record has a lot to be desired so I was so keen to hear first hand where the fight for equality had reached. The first thing I noticed was that most of the people I was sitting with had been arrested or detailed, one for almost six months, for activism around LGBT issues. I was shocked.
ON THE STEPS OF THE GREAT HALL OF THE PEOPLE IN BEIJING
I listened as the group told me about life, their ambitions and amazing achievements. But knowing the hardship they have faced I actually became anxious when a lesbian couple began holding hands and openly showing love and affection. We were in a straight bar so wasn’t this going to trigger arrest? Actually, nothing happened even though we were certainly being surveilled, and no-one else in the bar cared at all. Life went on just as it should. After all I’d heard, and expected, this surprised me. When I asked more about what the activists were doing to get arrested things became clearer. Firstly they told me about China’s liberalising attitude forwards gay rights. They have set up an LGBT Centre, similar to our own Community Safety Forum, with state approval.
LGBT ACTIVISM IN CHINA IS ALIVE AND KICKING! Since being elected MP for Hove and Portslade I’ve been asked to go on quite a few visits but I’ve not seen the value to my work in our city so turned them down says Peter Kyle. ) That was until just before Christmas when I got a call asking if I’d take part in a delegation to China as part of the follow-up from President Xi’s state visit. I said “Yes!” straight away! I’m lucky because I’ve travelled a lot. I was an aid worker for almost a decade, spent months in South America when I was a student at Sussex Uni making the most of summer holidays, and academic research I did took me to Africa for long periods of time. All of these experiences have given me a good grounding for life as an MP at a time when Britain is finding its way in a fast-changing world.
challenging conversations than the very formal sessions. On the second day a staff organiser for the visit took me to one side. She said a group of LGBT activists had requested to meet with me while I was in Beijing and asked if I wanted to meet them in a bar when we finished work that evening. Too right I did! Our visit had been covered by Chinese media and one of the activists realised I was an openly gay politician and wanted to meet to discuss LGBT issues. It was great to escape the formal events and jump into a cab to Beijing’s Old Town, where we walked through beautiful and atmospheric side streets filled with small shops and bars. I spent the evening in a really lovely bar, listening, learning, and talking with a truly inspirational group of Chinese LGBT activists.
They work you hard on these trips! We had half an hour to freshen up after the flight and then went into our first set of meetings. Each day we met different delegations representing different aspects of life, from political figures to business and academic, usually in very formal meetings. Over lunch and dinner the conversations carried on but were a much better time to get stuck into meaty and more
PETER & CHINESE LGBT ACTIVISTS
But I’ve never been to China. The size and scale of their country, population and economy makes them the single biggest force for global change in the foreseeable future and that includes direct opportunities and challenges for us in Brighton & Hove too so I leapt at the chance to take part in the delegation.
There have been other steps in the right direction too, homosexuality has been decriminalised for example. Gay bars and clubs aren’t hidden away and are accepted, even though they suffer inexplicable closures, but apparently that’s normal for straight clubs too. However, what becomes a real problem is when the activists try to organise. Handing out leaflets or posting online messages advertising gay support groups or drop-in sessions lands you in trouble. I was told of one support group meeting they advertised where the police called and said "tomorrow’s meeting cannot go ahead". The organiser said they are not interested in meaningless protest and want to work constructively with the state so agreed to cancel the meeting. At 1am that night doors were knocked on and all of the organisers of the meeting were detailed for 24 hours. The police just wanted to make doubly sure the meeting wasn’t going ahead. In a one-party state, the fear of civil society getting organised is all-pervasive and LGBT activism has been swept up in this paranoia. The day after our meeting I was told that there had been no repercussions for the activists due to our meeting, but the fact I was told that at all shows how far these brave campaigners have to go before they will enjoy the freedoms we have fought for and won in recent years. I’m still in touch with the campaigners, they have just been granted permission to hold an international LGBT conference this year. I admire so much the smart way they work within strict perimeters of the Chinese system but always seem to manage to move things forward. I’ll be doing all I can to help them on that journey.
PETER KYLE ) Peter Kyle was elected Labour MP for Hove & Portslade at the General Election in May 2015 with a majority of 1,236 and 42.3% of the vote.
GSCENE 53 baton on getting fussed about it. Don’t get me wrong, the issues around gender and sexual identity are still incredibly important. But personally, it made me giggle and wish there was some bling associated with the honour. Where did you meet your partner? We met in a coffee shop on Valencia Street in San Francisco in 1995 after being connected through newspaper personal ads. I wasn’t even sure there would be a second date, but here we are - married four times! The first was a commitment ceremony way before legal marriage was ever dreamed of. The rest were in the journey of getting to a legal marriage. Which cheese did you have at your wedding reception? It was 1998, I so can’t remember what we ate. I sang to her as we danced to Fly Me To The Moon and it was magic.
GRINGA DAIRY
Your perfect cheesy threesome? I do love an evening in with the Mrs and a lovely Vacherin… just sayin.
Eric Page chats to Kristen Schnepp who makes award-winning, delicious artisan Mexican cheese at her urban dairy in Peckham.
Who would paint your portrait - Mabel Alvarez or Frida Kahlo de Rivera? Tough one, Frida for sure. What’s your take on Little Miss Muffet? She needs to get off her tuffet.
) Why ‘Gringa Dairy’? It’s honest. ‘Gringa’ is the feminine of ‘gringo’; this is white girl dairy. I’m not Mexican and didn’t want any concern about cultural appropriation. As LGBT it’s important to have respectful allies, I’m trying to be one in return. Selfridges is a pretty good place to be selling your cheeses, that’s successful? Like any small business, it’s hard work, worry and a few tears. We’re niche at a time when the UK is coming to love Mexican food and rediscovering its passion for artisan products. I’m exceedingly proud to contribute to the trend. Does where you live affect how you make cheese? Absolutely. We have to alter our processes as some traditional techniques are not met with love by food safety in the UK. They act like raw milk is a relative to nitro-glycerine, so we work within narrow parameters. We use British milk so have crafted cheeses that taste authentic and can be used in place of similar cheeses you’d use in Mexico. Our Queso Fresco cheese can be used in recipes where you might use
Curds or Whey? Curds are the heart of the business; whey is a vital environmental responsibility. Did you know that 75-90% of each litre of milk eventually becomes ‘waste’ in the form of whey? Mine goes to feed pigs. This reduces the feed costs of the farmer and allows me to get my by-product as high in the food chain as I can. Ranchero, Panela or other fresh cheeses. What brought you to Peckham? It’s the right proximity to the farm where I get my milk and central London. It’s efficient to move the milk and be close to customers rather than moved finished cheese from the country. Your cheese has quite a specific tone and voice, what makes it taste like that? Now if I told you that… A lot of science as well as art is required. I’m always tinkering – milk is essentially a living ingredient. It changes daily and with the seasons. What’s your biggest headache? Administration. The documentation requirements are rather insane. What’s your typical working day? I get up every morning at 4am to collect milk and then fall in bed at 9.30pm after 14 hours of making cheese and running the business. When was the last time you cried? What time is it? Okay, not really. I have openly wept over the cheese vat. Starting your own business is amazing, but it’s also freaking scary. I think it’s important to own that and not be afraid to talk about it. You’ve been called a ‘Cheese Queen’ but you are a lesbian, how does that make you feel? I kinda love it. I’m almost 47 and been ‘out’ since I was 18. I was very concerned with language and labels and identity for many years. However, I admit to having passed the
Any new projects? I’m working on a new cheese and I’m focused on growing the business. Where can we taste and find your cheese? You can get a taste at lots of Mexican and Latin restaurants in London and beyond. Folks can buy from several Whole Foods stores, Selfridges and independent retailers and online orders can be placed with the Cool Chile Company. Stockists and a partial list of customers can be found on my website: www.gringadairy.com/buy What’s your favourite cheesy joke? That’s nacho cheese!

54 GSCENE past as though sick at the memory, unfairly so as some former girlfriends are my longest standing friends. But turn I did and how we all grimaced through our unkind cat-calls of “oooo no, don’t do fish” reflecting the comedic representations of ourselves we had spent so long bemoaning. And although I am every inch a gay, I took every action possible to shut out any idea of heterosexual conduct in the same way I had done so with my true homosexual self all those years before, and my community and environment encouraged me to do so, in both cases.
thrust into an upbringing and series of community-led influences that are not to be underestimated.
For some, growing up now as we awake into 2016, life isn’t like that anymore. On primetime television this week I’ve seen gay kisses from both men and women whilst characters of transgendered circumstances waltz across the streets of long-established soap operas. I’ve read online discussions as to whether or not there is now too much gay sex on our screens and the balance unrealistic. Schools and colleges are required to engage their students in discussions around sexual orientation, gender and they actively celebrate LGBT History Month. All of which has an influential consequence.
I didn’t grow up with any positive representations of gay life or relationships. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, gay characters on the television were confirmed bachelors and figures of fun, and whilst amusing they were more often than not invariably stupid. They often lacked depth, always masculinity, and were seldom portrayed within a functioning relationship with like-minded individuals.
There are young women who through their formative years encourage the attentions of other women as they explore their own sexualities. There are young men who feel no shame at the one night stand or brief affair with a another male friend and openly discuss the experience with their peers and future partners, a world which seemed impossible to my 18-year-old self.
As AIDS swept the world and the tabloids daubed our community with morbid pity when not out and out blame, homosexuals became figures to be feared or lightly mourned by some equally dysfunctional friends with drink, drug and relationship problems of their own. Even the trailblazers of gay pop in Andy Bell and Jimmy Sommerville, although I have huge admiration for them now, at the time to me seemed an oddity on the peripheral edge, rather than a staple centre at the focus of any kind of acceptable way to be. Along with my peers I was regularly warned both of and off homosexuals as paedophilic perverts and then carriers of a deathly disease. In short, surrounded by all of the above, I neither wanted to be a gay nor to be accidentally associated with any aspect of it.
I do not doubt that in some remote corner of the United Kingdom there are gay young people exhausted and afraid of being found out. There will be some lonely character in a small hidden corner of an estate in a sprawling metropolis who does not understand and is ashamed of their feelings. I know that there are parts of the world where any indication of a homosexual preference brings imprisonment or certain death, and in no way do I wish to diminish their suffering or struggle by suggesting the world has moved on. It has moved on, but there are people out there both on these shores and further afield who need our support and our help. The fight, the cause, the inequality, the liberation movement may have changed, but its need is as prevalent as ever.
CRAIG’S THOUGHTS Put up your dukes and fight. Or, the fat lady may be singing but she hasn’t finished the tune yet by Craig Hanlon-Smith @craigscontinuum ) Should you spend any time with a gay man or woman under the age of 30, try to engage them in a discussion about the fight, the cause, inequality, the liberation movement, and at best watch them glaze over with a bemused disinterest or in most cases retreat from the conversation in a manner so hostile you might as well have flopped it out and pissed into their Chai-Latté. Talk to the under 20s and the landscape seems more remote than a trek across the dark side of Uranus, and I mean the planet; and who can blame them. Whilst my gay icons fall into two categories, the heterosexually gratuitous (and I use the term in admiration) female popstar or the ‘here and queer’ angry young man of yester year. Contemporary icons of youth describe themselves in every conceivable label defying well, label. From the ‘I’m not heterosexual, not homosexual, just sexual’ to a ‘non-binary not imprisoned by the limitations of gender totally free human’. Once I’ve scooped up my eyeballs after rolling them up the high street, you might as well hand me a novel translated into Cantonese and ask me to get on with it. I haven’t much of a clue as to what any of it means. Much has been written, discussed, presented and argued about the gay gene or nature versus nurture, and whilst I may believe, and I do, that my sexual orientation was predetermined whilst I was rolling around in the uterus, the term ‘fluid’ is increasingly more common when describing the sexual preferences of those born since 1997, or post SpiceWorld. It would take a lobotomy to convince me that as humans we are not predisposed to swing one way more than the other, but I am slowly warming to the idea that those 20 years my junior are more likely to engage in a spot, or indeed a lot, of bisexual practice and without much encouragement. Whilst the amniotic fluid cushions our introduction into the world, once the waters break we are unceremoniously
Upon realising that life inside the closet was actually much bleaker than it could possibly have been out, in haste I quickly took to the life of a homosexual as though roller booting through its nether regions to a soundtrack of Xanadu whilst shitting glitter. I immediately turned my back upon a forced heterosexual
And as you engage in conversation with someone twenty, thirty, or even forty years your junior, whilst it will piss them off, remind them that without you, me, them, and us, none of us would be enjoying the liberations we are beginning to take for granted. It has been, and for some remains, a long old slog. I for one am proud to wear the scars of my battle.

HYDES’ HOPES
HOMELY HOMILY
BY REV MICHAEL HYDES
BY GLENN STEVENS
THAT’S LIFE
GOOD CLEAN FUN
) I really don't like getting old. I know that there are supposed to be benefits, like the wisdom and patience that comes with experience, but I can't say it's a fair trade-off. My back is a mess, so is my knee, and I'm looking at surgery for both of them. I don't have the energy I used to have, and generally I'm ready for bed by 11pm. The last time I was out late partying I spent the following day crashed on the sofa. My bladder wakes me before the alarm clock, and I'm desperately resisting the need for bifocals.
) Why do people feel okay about dropping litter? Okay, so it’s not the most pressing thing to get worked up about, but it is one of those things that is quite unnecessary. I have to admit at one point in my life I became a bit obsessed with cleaning but not as bad as the people on the programme, Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners. As much as I like a clean home, I don’t find the need to get up at 5am to bleach my cat’s hoop or whatever the latest cleaning craze is on that show. No, I’m not that bad, but dropping litter is one of those things that really gets my goat.
The hair on my head seems to have migrated to my nose and ears. If I didn't do something with my eyebrows I would look suspiciously like Dennis Healey. I've lost over an inch in height and gained more than few around the waist. It would seem that Sheldon was right: gravity is a bitch. Making friends is so much more difficult now than when I was younger. Maybe because I'm a little wiser and more cautious, but also because I enjoy my own company now and need much more 'me' time than when I was younger. When I look in the mirror I can see that I've matured; but more like cheese than fine wine. I've lost count at the amount of times the doctor or dentist has said 'this is normal for a man your age'. The creaking and twinges, the aches and pains; my body tells me what the weather is like long before I look out of the window or catch the weather report for the day.
“When I look in the mirror I can see that I’ve matured; but more like cheese than fine wine” Maybe it's not the years; maybe it's the mileage. I'm 55 this year and I should feel better than this. Except – I survived a serious bout of malaria when I was younger; battled pneumonia only to find out later that it was TB; contracted Lyme disease when a tick burrowed into my back. In the face of all that maybe I'm not doing too badly. And over the years I've had some great jobs. I was a chef at a restaurant in New Bond Street in London. I was senior electronics engineer with responsibility for a national financial institution. I now pastor an MCC, which is absolutely the best job in the world. I've testified at Senate Committee hearings on behalf of same-sex marriage in the USA, had the privilege of supporting gay, lesbian, and transgender folk on their journeys, often through times of great change, and marched down New York's 5th Avenue in the annual Pride Parade. I'm married to the most wonderful man in the world - who makes me happy. I've experienced the presence, love and power of God in amazing ways. I love being a bear and thank God that I was born gay. From repressed Jehovah's Witness to gay pastor - so far it's been one heck of a journey! No, I'm not a fan of getting older, but then the alternative isn't something I'd want just yet either. Perhaps I will look back in another 20 or 30 years and be able to talk about further adventures. I suspect I'll complain about getting old just as keenly too. But then, that's life.
When I first moved to Brighton way back in 1985, the place was still seen as a town for a dirty weekend (readers’ voice, “Still is!”) The streets back then were a bit grubby; think, Brighton Rock, 1945, but in colour. These days the town still gets grubby (in more ways then one) particularly on a Saturday night, but the waste collection crew do a sterling job at clearing all the crap away after all the drunken reveilles have thrown up, lost their knickers and copped off; but things would be so much easier if people stopped treating the pavement as a dustbin, or worse! But it’s not just the streets, last summer I had a good go at clearing up the woods near where I live. The one thing that gave me a mix of amusement and concern was the bin-bag full of empty miniature Southern Comfort bottles I collected. Had some school kids got a bargain job lot or was it a stressed teacher sneaking the small bottles for a swift tipple on their way to work? Now that the bushes are all dying back I’ve noticed a whole new batch have been chucked from the pavement into the ditch. Ahhhhhh!
“The Phantom Arsonist of Dukes Mound had set fire to yet another plastic bin” As I’m typing this I’m reminded of a headline from past Gscene columnist Rita’s Snatcher’s screaming headline: “She’s Back”. It transpired back then, the Phantom Arsonist of Dukes Mound had set fire to yet another plastic bin. Not that most night-hawks who used the place seemed to care, the place was then as it is now, littered with beer cans, lube wrappers and used condoms. Now, I think it’s great that all those horny men are having safe sex, but those same men would be up in arms if the place was flattened due to complaints that the place was a mess (which it is). So come on guys, play safe and take your rubbish home or at least chuck it in one of those concrete bins. Okay, moan over, let’s not leave it to the volunteers at THT to do their annual clear up of the Bushes, and let’s help the Brighton & Hove Waste Collection Team by giving our town a bit of loving and help keep the streets of Brighton tidy throughout 2016 and beyond.

CHARLIE SAYS Here we are. 2016! Wow! So much has happened. So many gains. Charlie Bauer Phd http://charliebauerphd.blogspot.co.uk ) So, before you log onto your property valuation site to see how much your bedsit has gone up in the last year, we need to talk about what we’ve lost in the past year. Well, we’ve lost scores of innocent people to terrorism. That’s true. We’ve lost our belief in rescuing swathes of migrant refugees, images of babies sleeping in the sand and all that. That line of humanity spreading west. We’ve lost our sense and become a confused race of people not knowing the difference between the lies of an elected government and the antics of biased media empires. Obscuring whether migrants were terrorists. Or were they fleeing terrorism like we are by placing permission with the government to go to war? Obscured for the benefit of all the agencies involved. Then Paris and the Europeans banning these new migrants. Not because anyone knows whether a new wave of immigrants will give forth a new wave of threat and fear, but because nobody can be sure about strangers anymore. The distrust of the outsider that demarked the boundaries of old Europe back again in play. And the British Government seeing this as leverage to leave Europe once and for all, citing financial disruption and migrants rather than the real reason – to separate their own people from access to a system of human rights they have no control over. What else have we lost. Well, London. Always the hub of the cutting edge, like every other global capital with its poor, its immigrants, its artists now moved on somewhere else. The monetary value of property devaluing the city’s cultural capital. Empty investment houses. The new money caucus of the post-European economic boom. Lost to all but the rich few of us. Of them. Of those who can’t spend £700k on a one bedroom flat so they can work locally as a primary school teacher. Leading to the death of multiculturalism, the only reason many of us stay here. Protection from the white, straight man with a grudge.
The loss of the NHS. As if we didn’t know that every Tory Government would not hack the jewel in the nation’s crown whenever they are elected. But we lost our minds and allowed it to happen. We lost the recognition that when the coalition ended then the monetary scalpels would be unsheathed. We lost our reasoning when we thought there were efficiencies to be made, saving the nation cash. We lost the ability to see that this is becoming one of the richest economies in the world. Foreign property stock investments over the very people who need to live here. But we didn’t lose money. There is enough of that to keep the NHS going for decades. Just that the Tories misdirect it somewhere else. We lose junior doctors who plan ahead to a living wage somewhere else with a nicer climate and where they may be able to live out their lives being valued and respected. Compromising the very ethics that they were sold as children. When people had respect for a health service. What else? Well, we lost the BBC. Murdoch’s plan, devised across at a kitchen table in the village of Chipping F**kham between Brookes and Cameron, dining on slices of moist pig head. Here, we also lost an ancient system of law where the guilty/innocent took a paid vacation in America until it ‘all died down’. Now sitting pretty, breaking the Tory bread with the newly lost Jeremy Clarkson and his wardrobe of 29” Levi’s. Flagrant flaunting of corruption as they set up a new society where to complain puts a Google pointer on your online scalp.
So, we’ve also lost our identities. Or rather, they’ve been acquired. No other country in the world has the surveillance that the British do. We’ve lost the ability to process any information correctly. Only recently it was revealed that GCHQ carried out ‘persistent’ illegal hacking of phones, computers, and networks WORLDWIDE under so called ‘thematic’ warrants. Treaties that ignore privacy safeguards. And we’ve lost our democratic right to oppose this. I’m not saying that our democratically elected government are deliberately obscuring this. They don’t care who’s offended here. They know that one day they’ll be gone and their legacy will result in the biggest loss of liberty since the enclosure system. Don’t forget that chaos in Europe is food for the power hungry government of the UK. They don’t smell terrorism from ISIS, they smell dissent from their own electorate. Which is why our individual dossiers are being compiled by GCHQ. They’ll find something on us when they want to take us to a virtual court and convict us into shutting up. A cabal of power that knows no bounds, that every newer government will have to cow-tow towards. The reborn governments of Afghanistan and Iraq. Every single invasion culture looking for some form of inclusion in the global present. Then more dead babies sleeping on beaches. We’ve lost our grip on the environment. Two billion cash pledged in Paris wasn’t a diversion from the acts of terror. Nor was it a gesture to think that the G1 cares about furry animals. At that meeting, world leaders were given the real life expectancy of the planet they stand on and have ignored. And it’s not good prognosis, Doc. We all know it, but we have lost the ability to process it anymore. It’s easier to play Candy Crush on your iPhone than it is to switch to a news app stating that by 2050 (34 years) swathes of the planet will become inaccessible. How do we counter it for the sake of the kids, kids? Change global emissions? Come on, everyone knows it’s over. Just build some luxury Seven Oaks apartments on stilts. Put a property premium on every hilly area. Sell off the lowlands to the upwardly mobile like yesterday’s offal. You might die down there, but a deal is a deal! Hey, maybe some refugee camps. At least the government PR will then read as compassion – ammunition for the next statistical Tory front bench. Of course, the list could go on and on. But I’ve actually lost the will to continue with the endless bullet points. It’s easier to conveniently lose my hearing. Just like everyone else.

FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE ) One day, I walked into my NHS dentist to find the old-style checkup followed by scale and polish had been abolished. In its place was a quick summery of expensive fillings and a further booking with the ‘hygienist’ for an extra £50! I hadn’t even used up my half hour appointment. Apparently, in the six months since my last visit, I’d gone from having a healthy mouth, to having the teeth of a pirate. Coincidentally, many poor people were no longer eligible for free treatment; I guess having lost these clients, the money had to be made elsewhere. Given that oral health is an early indicator in countless diseases, this cutback is false economy. So many poorer people now avoid the expense altogether, ending up with chronic problems costing more in the long run. I can’t even blame the Tories, instead I’m glaring (with my Jack the Ripper teeth) in the direction of Tony Blair. Dentists were the thin-end of the wedge. Have you tried getting an appointment with your GP recently? We’re witnessing the wholesale dismantling of our NHS and ushering in of a private health system through the back door. Who the hell is in charge of buying drugs and equipment? Why do they get charged so much by companies? Why do so many health professionals train at the NHS’s expense, only to leave for the private sector or abroad? We ought to make them pay back the cost of their training. This year I watched my partner and my brother undergo NHS operations. My brother is a martial arts instructor so keyhole surgery was the only viable option for his hernia. Luckily, he reminded the surgeon of this on the day of his operation… thus finding he’d been mistakenly earmarked for open surgery and a potentially ruined career! After threatening to leave in a taxi, his surgeon relented but what a woeful lack of communication.
“It’s morally reprehensible to profit from another’s illness, how can we allow ministers to run down and carve up our nation’s greatest asset?” My partner waited over a year in agony for a simple knee operation. The litany of mistakes is far too long to list here, but they included being struck from the waiting list twice for not attending appointments which she absolutely attended, being told her blood pressure was too high to operate (total rubbish as it turned out), and being brought round after the op by a nurse whose English was so poor we had to ask again and again what she wanted us to do. Free at the point of use, we pay for the NHS through our NI. I’d pay more if necessary but I think the problem is mismanagement. It’s morally reprehensible to profit from another’s illness, how can we allow ministers to run down and carve up what is arguably our nation’s greatest asset? My partner’s not alone in her plight to get an operation; Brighton’s so full of people limping around and dragging limbs, the high street resembles ‘Day of the Dead’. The NHS is itself sick; let’s fight to make it fit again, after all, our lives depend on it.
58 GSCENE books about managing attachment disorder, parenting a neglected child and so on because WE KNOW IT ALL! No seriously, we don’t, far from it in fact but what we have learnt in the last four years is that every child is different and they will react to the same situation in a different way. This goes for all children not just the unfortunate souls that have experienced too much trauma too soon. I will talk to my female friends who have their own children, that they gave birth to about some of the behaviour we have witnessed from ours and I will hear them say ‘Oh yeah, my little boy does that too’ The obvious difference is that their child will be two or three years old rather than seven or eight.
DAD & DADDY What a journey we have been on! The last three and a half years have gone by so fast says Syd Spencer ) What a journey we have been on! The last three and a half years have gone by so fast. It has literally been a trip of a life time and this train doesn’t seem to be slowly down any time soon, in fact it is going a lot faster. Being a Dad has made me a better person, not better than anyone else, just better than the person I was before, it has helped me to sieve through the bullshit of life and see what is really real. Unconditional love, forgiveness, accepting others’ faults and supporting them to change. Learning about how the shortest, traumatic experience can change a person, dent their personality, knocking them off the slow lane of growing up, shunting them into the fast lane, making them grow up too fast, creating confusion, pain, fear and exhausting their little souls. We hope that we have helped and are helping our kids to heal from their pasts, we hope that we have shown them what unconditional love is; but also that the trauma they have experienced doesn’t mean that they can treat people the way they were treated in their early years. I have never laughed so much or indeed worried so much since becoming Dad. As cheesy as it sounds the fun times with the kids are priceless. We have all giggled over the most ridiculous things and sometimes none of us have known really why. It warms my heart to be able to share that there is a strong sense of belonging and
respect in our home now. Katy is showing that she can manage her anger in a better way, she doesn’t seem to have that need in herself to punish or get others back, something that she learnt from her birth parents at a very young age. Instead she is comfortable telling us that she is hurt but that she accepts her punishment, which helps the whole household move on a lot quicker. Bradley cries a lot less, the deep sobbing from a dark place inside him has gone, he no longer goes into an hysterical breakdown when told off and I think this is because we have shown that getting told off or doing something wrong doesn’t mean that he is going to be moved on to another family as he had been four times before us and that he won’t be locked in the bathroom or under the stairs, again something that he sadly experienced too many times before coming to us. We have changed too; Kev and I have taken a good look at ourselves and learnt from the mistakes we have made. We have pretty much thrown most of the parenting books away now, along with them we have also chucked out the
The two most important things we have done for our two kids, I hope, was to help them to be who they were born to be. It was pretty simple to put in place, although not so easy to experience at times. Allowing and encouraging them to regress emotionally when in the safety of our home, to give them what they had been deprived of, cuddles, kisses, nurturing and LOVE, is not a difficult thing to do. The other thing we did, again something that all children should know, was to make sure they knew that we will never give up on them. To always be there, to always support them and to show them that when things are tough parents do not walk away, give up or care less is simple and so powerful. Writing every month, sharing our stories with you has been a privilege and the feedback I have had has been uplifting; but now, with things running on a pretty level track, I have decided it’s time to have a break from the Dad & Daddy page. With Bradley thriving at school and Katy growing up to be a much calmer and genuine young lady we want to just get on with being the four of us for a few months but we will be back! We have secondary school coming up for Katy in September and I can already imagine the battles that lie ahead about boys, sleepovers, discos, the appropriate way to wear her school uniform, make up and so much more. So I’d like to finish this by saying a huge heartfelt Thank You to all of you who have read my stories about being Dad, it has meant a lot to share it all and I hope to see you all again soon.

A BLOODY HISTORY
IN A NUTSHELL
) For some time I’ve been researching the subject of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), a practice that is both horrifying and fascinating. Initial research found that FGM appeared to primarily be an African issue, which, at least on the surface, seems to be the case. A 2013 UNICEF report found FGM prevalent in 27 African countries with Somalia having a 98% rate of mutilation. But FGM cannot justifiably be called only an African issue; it’s in fact a worldwide phenomenon that’s not often talked about, often hidden from view and conveniently ignored by the powers that be. Forms of FGM can also be found in countries such as the Philippines, India as well as Africa.
) Happy New Year! As it’s the start of 2016 we thought we’d give you an update on what we got up to in 2015 and what we hope for the year ahead.
FGM’s bloody history is steeped in secrecy, myth and confusion but a starting point for this subject is the 1920s, when the Kenyan Missionary Council referred to FGM as ‘Sexual Mutilation of Women’ followed with academic articles being written in the 1970s. In 1996, American photographer Stephanie Welsh won a Pulitzer Prize for photos she took depicting FGM in Kenya. The year before she’d read a book by African-American author Alice Walker about FGM. She wanted to see the practice for herself and form her own opinions. The photos she took were on one level beautiful and on another level totally horrific. I found that for everyone who despises FGM, there’s someone who supports it and a lot of them were and are women; in fact it’s mainly women who perform FGM, some with more skill than others. In 1999 the author of The Female Eunuch, feminist Germaine Greer, argued that attempts to outlaw FGM amounted to "an attack on cultural identity". She wasn’t and isn’t alone in her opinion. FGM is a global contentious issue that has supporters and decriers on all sides. Interestingly, the UK has had laws against FGM since 1985 when the Prohibition of Female Circumcision Act came into being. This act, which was introduced by Wayland Young, 2nd Baron Kennet, was kick started by a Ghanaian-British Nurse, Efua Dorkenoo (1945-2014) who, when training as a midwife in the 1970s, saw the horrific impact that FGM had on women’s lives. She wrote Cutting the Rose: Female Genital Mutilation – The Practice and its Prevention in 1995, which is now extremely hard to get hold of. This Act was then turned into the Female Genital Mutilation Act of 2003, which made it an offence for UK nationals or permanent UK residents to carry out FGM abroad, or to aid, abet, counsel or procure the carrying out of FGM abroad, even in countries where the practice is legal. And to reflect the serious harm that FGM causes, the Act also increased the maximum imprisonment penalty from 5 to 14 years. Even more recently (2015), Crime Prevention Minister Lynne Featherstone announced that front-line professionals will have a mandatory duty to report cases of FGM. New measures have been published online with regard to the work that needs to be done to eradicate FGM in the UK. So on the surface, the fight against FGM in the UK seems to have purpose and a goal. Having laws to protect people against what can be a horrific life-threatening/changing procedure is to be lauded by all of us but a word of caution and concern. Laws will only work if they are used. You can give all the training you like, produce posters, get air time on TV and radio, and still fail to achieve what you set out to do. Since 1985 there has not been ONE successful prosecution with regard to FGM in the UK. An attempt and in my opinion, a wrong attempt was made to prosecute a London Doctor with the end result of him being acquitted by the jury in less than an hour. With this failure, the UK’s foray into FGM criminal prosecution has pretty much ground to a halt but at some point this abhorrent practice will have its day in court, and justice will finally be done. “Culture should not be torture”, said Alice Walker. Sister, I could not agree with you more.
Early last year, Sarah came into post as the new LGBT community liaison officer. She began by making contact with many LGBT organisations in Brighton & Hove and between us we’ve been visiting as many of them as possible. This is set to continue and we’re keen to hear from any new groups that we’ve not yet made contact with. Sarah also works in the local Crime Reduction Team but has also taken on investigations relating to the community and individuals affected by hate crime. Rory has undertaken casework to support victims of hate. As a team, we’re unable to take on every report, but will give advice and support to our colleagues who are investigating criminal offences with a hate element and that would benefit from specialist LGBT knowledge. Police can only investigate criminal matters, for example: verbal abuse, physical attacks, sexual abuse, harassment, amongst others. Unfortunately we cannot investigate civil discrimination issues. We’ve heard feedback that calls to our mobiles have been missed, so we’ve updated posters around town with the latest numbers to ensure this doesn’t happen again. We keep Facebook and the contacts at the back of Gscene up-to-date also. In any event, please call us on 101 to make an initial crime report. That way, as the LGBT team isn’t 24/7, you can be sure to get the most appropriate police response in a timely fashion. Training-wise, we give inputs on LGBT matters throughout the year to police personnel. Rory delivered many sessions of trans awareness training to our communications department, which includes staff who answer 101 and 999 calls. As more of our investigation work will be done over the phone this is becoming even more important. Rory has also given talks to our ‘Proud Allies’, who support LGBT staff in Sussex Police and is involved in training the Sussex-wide LGBT liaison officers. For contact details for officers outside of Brighton & Hove, view: www.sussex.police.uk/media/959438/lgbt_lo_list.pdf We’ve given hate crime reporting training to LGBT Switchboard and MindOut. Volunteers at both services are equipped to listen and support you to make reports, even anonymously, to police or the council if you’ve been affected by any kind of hate. We also work in partnership with the LGBT Community Safety Forum and support their efforts to help the LGBT community, including their Report It! hate reporting project. We continue to do a regular drop-in at the THT van once a month at Dukes Mound. We’re looking to start a regular drop-in at a community venue this year. Please let us know if you’d like to see us in a particular location.
NOVEMBER’S STATS: There were 18 recorded LGBT hate crimes this month. Offences include several incidences of malicious communications in the form of text messages, email and phone calls. People also experienced verbal abuse and harassment. There were three assaults. Incidents took place throughout the city.
CONTACT INFORMATION ) We both have Facebook profiles and a page – our usernames are: PC Sarah Laker and LGBT Caseworker Rory Smith, and Brighton & Hove LGBT Police Team. We tweet @PoliceLGBT. Social media should not be used for reporting incidents – please call us on 101, or if it’s an emergency, 999.

SAM TRANS MAN Dr Samuel Hall - on life as a transguy, finding a soulmate and how we still have a long way to go. ) Hurrah! Ed has given us all a free reign this month. I can rant about anything I like. I think that’s generally what I end up doing every month anyway, under the guise of a theme, but thanks all the same Ed, I will take this opportunity to have my say on a matter close to my heart. I’ve recently met a beautiful woman. One of those meetings that happens when you least expect it; the best kind. She walked into my life at a time when I wasn’t looking for a relationship - it’s all so complicated when you’re a transperson - the tussle of wanting to keep your cards close to your chest about your past, versus the grim reality of needing, eventually anyway, to come out. I’ve had my ups and downs relationship-wise over the past 10 years or so, and because I have three kids and a full-time job, I had pretty much put a moratorium on getting into anything for the foreseeable future. So I really wasn't looking. But I guess the universe had other plans for me. We met at a cracking summer party that was held by a mutual friend. I think I was more keen than she was that first night. But we exchanged phone numbers, and that’s when I lost my bottle. There was a brief exchange by text the following day but I quickly realised that although I hadn't mentioned my ‘transiness’, there were others there that night who knew, and I was sure that she would have been told fairly swiftly - it’s too juicy a piece of gossip not to divulge. I’m ashamed to say it but I wanted to crawl under a stone. This piece of very private and personal information about me should be mine to tell. The timing and delivery should be my choice. But it never is. It spreads like wildfire once it’s out. People love it. I think it was probably like this for gay people years ago, and in some quarters it still is. Why
do people find this stuff so salacious? I’m ashamed too that I felt ashamed of myself. Still a long way to go then… So I didn't get in touch again. I convinced myself that my chances had been shot to pieces even before I’d had a chance. I hated that that happened, but it was my fault. If I’d told her myself in the first place, we would have been on a level playing field from the outset. As it turned out, I did see her again, not because I was brave, but because she was. I got a text inviting me over for lunch just over a week later. I was gobsmacked. Here was I wallowing in self-pity, while she absorbed the bombshell and invited me into her life. It didn’t take long for either of us to realise that there was something special between us, and that first blissful afternoon I absorbed some of her courage and came clean about my history. Of course she knew already, but it had to be discussed. Something wonderful began that day. She has had to be so brave in the subsequent months. Much as it was exciting and juicy gossip for mutual acquaintances to ‘out’ me to her, it also became the subject of hilarity that she would even entertain a relationship with me. I knew that this would be the case for anyone committing to me after transition, and it may have subconsciously influenced my decision to steer clear of a serious relationship - partnering a transperson opens you to all the transphobia that we endure on a daily basis, purely by association. You end up having to formulate responses to questions no-one should have to answer, unless they have decided to divulge intimate information in confidence to someone they completely trust. Personal and intimate stuff about your sex life and how it works, questions about why you would want to have a
I feel the same respect for my children, who also have to endure transphobia vicariously, and are similarly protective. They can often be heard correcting pronouns and making simple statements that put people in their place. Thankfully they don’t have to endure the really personal questions, it seems that their peers are more respectful than some adults. It’s this sort of thing that drives me to live stealth (not ‘out’ as a transguy) in some quarters - at my kids’ schools and at work - because I can’t bear what they have to go through once people know. You just never know what kind of reaction they’re going to get, and for my kids in particular, it’s a ‘thing’ that can and has caused them to be bullied. Transphobia is primarily a reflection of the general lack of education about us, and this is changing, but it’s going to take decades before the world stops seeing us as a joke.

Mercifully I don’t think she realised what was coming, but when she began to glimpse it, and then experience the full impact, she rose to the challenge in a way that has well and truly won my heart. This woman is fiercely protective over me. Over us. She defends herself and our relationship like a warrior, and that has fuelled respect and pride in me that I have never felt for another adult in my entire life.

relationship with a transperson when you could be with a ‘real’ man or woman. Questions about surgery and what’s in your partners underpants. Seriously. In what other circumstances are these kind of questions appropriate? Why does it suddenly become okay to ask this kind of intimate information so casually just because we are trans? We are a source of lurid fascination to many, and whilst I understand that much of this interest is born of ignorance, it seems that it causes otherwise sensitive and sensible people to cross boundaries in a way that makes them look so stupid. The equivalent for gay men and lesbians is the awful ‘who is the woman and who is the man in your relationship?’
