HOVE PARAPLEGIC CALLS FOR HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION TO INVESTIGATE BRIGHTON & HOVE COUNCIL Robert Carver is gay, is paraplegic and has been abandoned by Brighton & Hove City Council for the last five years in a secondfloor flat in Hove with no disabled access.
NORMAN COOK TO START THE VITALITY BRIGHTON HALF MARATHON 2017
ROBERT CARVER
) Norman Cook, aka Fat Boy Slim, one of the city’s most famous residents, will sound the starting claxon at 9am on February 26 to get the 13.1 mile Vitality Brighton Half Marathon race around the city underway. A keen runner himself, Norman is very familiar with the route, as he has run the race on numerous occasions. In 2016, he ran for the charity Young Epilepsy and in 2017 he will once again run the race, after his official race starter duties have ended.
Mr Carver has been housed in a second-floor flat by BHCC for the last five years. The flat has no disabled access and he has to be physically man handled up and down the stairs by his carer when he needs to go out. Mr Carver is paraplegic and has been told by his GP, nurse, occupational therapist and psychologist that he needs 24-hour care, but BHCC has only allocated him 28 hours a week. This means he is left to his own devices for two days a week and on the other days from 5pm till noon the next day. During that time he has no access to food, water, toilet, bath or even his bed. Despite pleas for a review of this situation from Mr Carver’s medical team, independent advisers and the local ambulance and fire services, BHCC recently reiterated that they see no need to expand the care he receives.
accommodation and care is ‘perfectly acceptable’. Following Mr Carver’s plight being highlighted by ITV News Meridian in October 2016 a BHCC spokesman admitted on camera that the accommodation the council had housed Mr Carver in for the last five years was “unsuitable”. Despite BHCC saying in a statement to ITV News Meridian on October 12, 2016 that new temporary accommodation with disabled access would be available shortly, no such new accommodation has materialised or been offered to Mr Carver. Subsequently the council have offered Mr Carver a bungalow in Whitehawk that was not wheelchair accessible and a ground-floor studio in emergency accommodation in central Brighton notorious for damp, drug-use and crime, described by Caroline Lucas MP for Brighton Pavilion as being unsuitable for disabled people and previously ruled out by BHCC when they withdrew an offer of the property to Mr Carver in March 2016. Mr Carver’s medical team and legal representatives advised him not to accept these offers despite being advised by BHCC that if he does not accept their offer they might opt to choose to no longer recognise their duty of care to him.
The accommodation the council originally allocated to Mr Carver is a second-floor flat which can only be reached by two flights of steep stairs. The flat has no lift and Mr Carver has to be dragged up and down the stairs This means Mr Carver could become 'intentionally homeless' and have no other option but to try to survive by his carers when he leaves the flat in order to attend as one of the many street homeless in Brighton & Hove. medical appointments. The flat itself is too small to accommodate a wheelchair which results in him being pulled around the floor by his carer when moving round the flat to go to the bathroom and to bed. For several years BHCC social workers have maintained that Mr Carver’s current
Norman said: “As a keen runner, Brighton local and seasoned Brighton Half Marathoner, I’m hugely looking forward to starting the Vitality Brighton Half Marathon 2017. The race is renowned for its buzzing atmosphere and each and every year the crowd support throughout the route is just fantastic. The race really brings the city together. It’s great to see so many people – especially those new to running and those running for charities – taking on the challenge of 13.1 miles. Bring on February 26!”
2,500 people have signed a petition asking the Human Rights Commission to investigate Mr Carver’s case. To sign the petition, view: www.change.org/p/theequality-and-human-rights-commission-justicefor-robert-carver
MARTIN HARRIGAN
) Mr Carver is petitioning the Human Rights Commission to investigate Brighton & Hove City Council’s (BHCC) policy for housing disabled people. He is asking that his case be included in the new enquiry being undertaken by the Equality and Human Rights Commission into housing for disabled people launched in December 2017.
2017 marks the 27th year for the Vitality Brighton Half Marathon and this year the race has the largest field in its history, with close to 13,000 runners set to take on the challenge of a half marathon.
Martin Harrigan, Race Director of the Vitality Brighton Half Marathon, added: “We’re thrilled that Norman Cook will sound the starting claxon this year to get runners on their way around the city. He’s been a big supporter of the race for years, so it’s brilliant to have him waving runners on for their half marathon journey. We’ll make sure he conserves his energy though as he’ll be joining the crowds to run the race himself!” Standard entries closed over the summer, but runners keen to enter can still sign up to run for charity. Charity places close on Sunday, January 29. For more information, visit: www.brightonhalfmarathon.com

SUSSEX BEACON TO CLOSE ITS PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES
SIMON DOWE
Funding historically for this service came from the Monument Trust and the Henry Smith Charity. The Monument Trust is to close this year and will be giving no further funding to the Sussex Beacon. As a result, the charity is no longer able to offer psychological services to people living with HIV. The only exception is the charity’s monthly mindfulness group, which will continue as normal. Simon Dowe, Chief Executive at the Sussex Beacon, said: “Without the necessary funding, it’s impossible for us to keep our psychological services running. This is a huge blow to the charity as these are long-standing members of staff who have provided invaluable support to people living with HIV over the years. We’re doing all we can to support the staff affected and will consult with our clients to ensure that those who would like to access alternative local psychological services are transferred as smoothly as possible before the end of March." The Sussex Beacon provides specialist support and care for people living with HIV through both inpatient and outpatient services. It helps hundreds of people living with HIV in Sussex a year and was rated ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission in September. In December 2016, the Sussex Beacon announced it was facing the prospect in June 2017 of closing services, including its ten bed inpatient unit, following a reduction in funding it receives from the NHS. Charity management and trustees have made and continue to make every effort to put the organisation in a stronger financial position to avoid these closures.
Whilst there have been histories written about HIV/AIDS, there has been almost nothing on the actual nursing work that was done caring for people during that period.
DR TOMMY DICKENSON
) Following last month’s announcement that the Sussex Beacon was suffering financial difficulties, the charity has announced its psychological services will close at the end of March this year, due to loss of funding. Three posts, the Head of Health and Wellbeing Services, the Senior Psychological Practitioner and the Trainee Psychological Practitioner, will be affected and made redundant at the end of March.
HIV NURSE HISTORIAN UNDERTAKES NEW RESEARCH PROJECT
) Dr Tommy Dickinson, a nurse historian at King's College London, is currently working on a project that is exploring the nursing care of people with HIV/AIDS before antiviral medication was readily available. The project begins in 1981, with the first reported AIDS case in the UK, and continues until 1996, when the evidence base for antiviral medication became explicit, shifting HIV/AIDS from a terminal illness to a manageable chronic disease.
remember from their chemsex encounters, 85.5% of respondents said they remembered everything to mostly everything, 10% said they recalled half of their experience and 4% said they remembered almost nothing. The remaining 0.5% recalled nothing of the experience. The survey also showed that during chemsex, 51% of men did not use protection during anal sex and 93% did not use protection during oral sex. The drug of choice for study participants was crystal meth (36%), followed by marijuana (19%), cocaine (13%) and MDMA (11%).
GSCENE COLUMNIST RUNS TO RAISE HIV/AIDS AWARENESS
CRAIG HANLON-SMITH
) Craig Hanlon-Smith, regular columnist and feature writer for Gscene, will be running in the Vitality Brighton Half Marathon on February 26 to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS and raise money for Terrence Higgins Trust (THT).
“On World AIDS Day in December 2016, I was shocked to work with some young people who didn’t know it was World AIDS Day, but more so that many of them had not heard of HIV or AIDS. These were 17 and 18-year-old young adults who have spent their lives in a publicly-funded education system. I was, and remain, appalled. “And so my run is yes, to raise money, but also, through the work I am involved with in education and with Mad 'Ed Theatre, to raise awareness. Thank you in advance for supporting me and my chosen charity. Any donation is gratefully received.” To make a donation to Craig’s run, view: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/CraigHanlonSmith

On February 26 I’ll be running the Vitality Brighton Half Marathon on behalf of THT. Terry Higgins was one of the first people in the UK to die from an AIDS-related illness and the charity was set up by his loved ones to personalise and humanise the issue of AIDS.
Tommy is seeking people to talk to him if: • You were diagnosed with HIV/ AIDS between 1981 and 1996 OR • You had a loved one die from HIV/AIDS between 1981 and 1996. • Also/alternatively, if you have diaries, letters, photos or any other interesting material relating to HIV/AIDS during this period?

Jane Postlethwaite said: “The idea for the night came about by having to read really bad scripts while doing my acting diploma, finding crap books in charity shops and watching Celebrity Autobiography on Youtube. The actual inspiration for the night was a video of Kristen Wiig reading from the Suzanne Somers Poem book, Touch Me. After watching this video (repeatedly), I ordered the poem book from America years ago (costing a whopping £25) knowing it would one day be read at a night like this and I wrote in my notebook idea for Brighton night, Bad Book Project. When I came to find my notebook years later and wanted to start an alternative comedy night I knew I had to use that title and use The Marwood for a venue. PRIDE COMES TO THE ISLE OF WIGHT ) Pride comes to Ryde, the next town to announce that they will stage their first Pride in 2017, on the Isle of Wight for the first time on Saturday, July 15. A new committee has been formed and organisers are holding a launch party at Coburgs, 70 Union St, Ryde on Friday, February 10 from 7pm. The event will be fully inclusive and open to everyone. An evening of live music, drag and cabaret is promised giving everyone the perfect opportunity to find out more about how to be involved as Isle of Wight Pride (IWPride) will need lots of volunteers to help make the event a huge success. Tickets for the launch party are £5 on the door and all money raised will go towards staging the Pride event in July.
JOE PLUMB
Whether you’re a business who would like to sponsor Pride, set up an information stall, sell items at Pride, or you’re a member of the community who would like to volunteer your expertise and experience, then members of the new committee will be available on the night to talk through their plans for the event. There will be an opportunity to network from 7pm before you join the party to celebrate the launch of IWPride!
The new committee includes: Joe Plumb (Chair), Zoe Thompson (Vice Chair), John Brownscombe (Treasurer) and Yve White (Secretary). Joe Plumb said: "I’m very excited about Pride coming to the Isle of Wight and the opportunity to help facilitate what I’m sure will be a very
special event. I’m lucky enough to have been born at a time of growing acceptance for the LGBT+ community but I do have a strong understanding of the struggles that led to this point. “Pride events are a strong reminder to those who have lived through criminalisation, Section 28, and the prejudice and abuse felt by so many. There is still a lot of work to do internationally as well as making equality in law a reality in this country. “It can also be said that the Isle of Wight lags behind the mainland in support and visibility for the LGBT+ communities. My vision for IWPride is for it to be an opportunity for us to take pride in how far we’ve come but to also highlight that there’s still work to be done.
FIRST PRIDE FOR EASTBOURNE ) Eastbourne will celebrate its very first Pride with a Mardi Gras-style, family-friendly parade and park event on Saturday, July 22 at Princess Park. Organisers say there will be a main stage with live entertainment, a dance tent with DJs playing all day and community stalls for local groups, organisations, statutory bodies and businesses. The day will start with a parade along the seafront heading into Princess Park, which is located between Eastbourne Pier and the Sovereign Harbour Marina. Ms Gallacher, chairperson of the Bourne Out LGBT social group, one of the main organisations involved, said: “This is going to be a first for Eastbourne, and will be a real celebration of equality, diversity and families. We must break down barriers of hate and homophobia. We have tremendous support for this locally and it is an event that will grow and grow, I have no doubt about that.”
"We’ve had over 1000 responses to the questionnaire and we’ll be sharing the results at our launch event. From the results it’s clear that islanders want an inclusive, family-friendly, all-day event, with a parade. We’ve set up working parties who are currently looking into how we can make these ideas a reality.
For more information about the event, call Scottie on 07956 580320 or email: bettygallagher@gmail.com
“There’s a lot of support for this event and I look forward to welcoming everyone to Ryde for the first IWPride.”
Bourne Out will hold a fundraiser on Saturday, February 4 from 8pm-midnight at the Cumberland Hotel, 34-36 Grand Parade Eastbourne, £5 all profits to Eastbourne Pride.

LATEST TV LAUNCH UK’S FIRST LGBT+TV CHANNEL ) Latest TV, the UK-based community TV channel, continues their equalities and diversity mission with the creation of the UK's first ever LGBT+ TV terrestrial channel. Latest LGBT+ TV, broadcasting from February 2017, will bring the best in LGBT+ news and entertainment to viewers' screens on Freeview Channel 7 and Virgin Media 159 in the greater Brighton area, as well as online globally.
Sophie said: "I'm incredibly thrilled about the prospect of leading one of the most exciting developments in British television for decades. The world is changing, and not always for the better, throughout the world there is an increasing wave of bigotry and prejudice. This represents a very real possibility to combat that and change people’s lives. We're aiming to entertain, educate and inspire our viewers."
BILL SMITH
Andrew Kay, the presenter of Amazon Prime's International Chef Exchange will bring his wit, charm and soufflé to the channel. Andrew said: "I see this as my chance to enjoy, in a public arena, being gay – but also in working towards a better and more equal world. Working with the Latest LGBT+ TV team is going to be exciting, challenging and fun and I hope that people - whether they are LGBT+ or not - will join in."
ANDREW KAY
SOPHIE COOK
Fronting the channel will be two of the city's well-known LGBT personalities. Sophie Cook, presenter and head of Latest LGBT+ TV, joined Latest TV in 2016 and was the first ever transgender woman to front a news programme in Europe. The former RAF engineer, motorbike racer, newspaper editor and rock music photographer, was also the first trans woman to work in the Premier League as club photographer for AFC Bournemouth. Her news and chat show Beyond the Rainbow will be a weekly highlight of the LGBT+ schedule and in addition she will be creating new documentary programmes for the channel.
Bill Smith, Latest TV's CEO and a nominee for the National Diversity Awards, said: “We're delighted that our channel will be creating daily LGBT news programmes and entertainment shows, as well as screening the very best LGBT films from across the world. We’ll also provide a platform for LGBT film-makers to share their work. With support from Coast to Capital, Latest TV has launched LGBT+ TV; however we receive no ongoing public funding and so we've turned to crowdfunding to finance our service."

HELEN, 50 LIVING WITH HIV SINCE HER 30S
CHRIS, 64 LIVING WITH HIV SINCE 1991
The groundbreaking report has captured the reality of what it means to be part of the first generation of people to grow old with HIV. The charity found that poverty, loneliness and social care are major concerns for older people living with HIV and has warned of a social care ‘time bomb’ ahead.
• The survey showed that nearly six out of 10 (58%) of people living with HIV aged 50 and over are living in poverty – double that seen in the general population. Meanwhile 84% of respondents were concerned about future financial plans.
• The survey of over 240 older people living with HIV also showed that 82% experienced moderate to high levels of loneliness – three times more than the general population of the same age.
• A quarter of respondents said they would have no one to help them if they ever needed support with daily tasks.
IAN GREEN
• Eight out of ten (82%) people living with HIV aged over 50 are concerned about whether they will be able to access adequate social care in the future. Ian Green, Chief Executive of THT, said: “Advances in HIV treatment mean that people with HIV are living longer and we’re now seeing the first generation of people growing old living with HIV. This is good news – but it also means we’re entering uncharted territory. “Many of these individuals were diagnosed when HIV was considered fatal and never expected to live beyond a couple of years – as a result, they’re less likely to have savings or pensions, and many have become socially isolated. And since then thousands more have been diagnosed with the highly stigmatised condition.
“These statistics should be a wake-up call to governments. People aged 50 and over are now the fastest growing group of people living with HIV, and new diagnoses in older people continue to rise. The issues they face can no longer be ignored, as the challenges of poverty, loneliness and social care grow more acute. “As it stands, our welfare, health and social care systems are simply not ready for this and we could see a time bomb in years to come. We must ensure our GPs, our care homes and our communities are ready to support people with HIV to live well in later life, while facing the uncertainty of what lies ahead.” One in three people seen for HIV care in 2015 were aged 50 and over, compared to one in five in 2011. New diagnoses among older people have nearly doubled in the last decade. The report, co produced by people aged 50 and over living with HIV who undertook elements of the research, highlights alarming stories of stigma and discrimination within care homes and other health and social care settings, warning that training for professionals must improve. Ian Green continued: “We’ve heard stories of how older people with HIV searching for care homes have been turned away or treated in a way that reflects outdated awareness of HIV. “One lady living with HIV in a care home was encouraged to spend as much time as possible in her room to avoid contact with other residents. When she did leave her room she was only allowed to sit on one chair and the TV remote was wiped down with antibacterial wipes after she’d used it. “This is shocking. A major shift in awareness and training for social care staff and support services on HIV and ageing is needed, to ensure they have the skills and knowledge to support the increasing numbers of people growing older with HIV.” Kevin Burgess, 65, said: “I was diagnosed with HIV in 1991, before any treatment was available. People were told they had just a couple of years to live so they spent their money at the time, thinking they didn’t have a future. Nobody realised we’d still be alive today, so there’s been no consideration for us. Here we are 20-odd years later, we’re not prepared, and the leftover attitudes from the 1980s are very much still around. KEVIN BURGESS
) Older people now represent one in three of all people living with HIV, but the social care, healthcare and welfare systems aren’t ready for this new and fast-growing ageing generation, according to the new report Uncharted Territory produced by Terrence Higgins Trust (THT).
Mark Budden, 56, who was diagnosed with HIV in 1997, added: “Living with HIV is like coming out of the closet again and again. Every time you disclose your HIV status to someone you know to expect all the myths and you have to go into a long explanation about the facts. I’m gay, I’m a Christian, I’m getting older, and I’m living with HIV. These are integral parts of who I am, but none of these labels alone defines me. MARK BUDDEN
The first generation of older people with HIV are facing poverty, loneliness and discrimination, according to a new report by Terrence Higgins Trust (THT).
“Going into a care home is a big fear for me. I used to live in sheltered housing and I couldn’t be open about my HIV status there, so I know what it’s like to have to lead a different life in your home. I wouldn’t want to have to do that again.”
“You just assume you’ll be looked after in old age in this country. It’s only when you have an elderly or ill relative that you realise that social care is not a given, you need to have savings as the government alone won’t look after you. If you’re isolated or financially struggling, as many people with HIV are, that’s going to be a lot harder.” George Rodgers, 56, living with HIV since 1994, said: “Growing older with HIV, you wonder what’s going to happen longterm? You can feel left on your own. Those of us who are living with HIV longterm are having more health problems it seems. No-one actually knows how HIV interacts with other things. I’ve got diabetes as well as HIV and sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference between what symptoms are linked to what.” GEORGE RODGERS
SOCIAL CARE ‘TIME BOMB’ FACING AGEING HIV POSITIVE POPULATION
ABOUT THE REPORT ) THT launched the survey as part of the peer-led research project. A total of 246 completed surveys were analysed. Respondents live across the UK: 10% in Scotland, 3% in Wales and the remaining 87% in England. Respondents’ ages ranged from 50 to 82 years old, with a median age of 55. Women made up 22% of respondents to the survey. The date of HIV diagnosis represented in the survey respondents range from 1982–2016 and age ranged from 18–74 years old at diagnosis. Thirtytwo percent were diagnosed with HIV before effective treatment was available in the UK in 1996. One-to-one interviews and group workshops with individuals living with HIV aged 50 or over also took place and were conducted by the peer researchers. In total, 307 people living with HIV aged 50 and over participated in the research. WHO’S THE BOSS BEHIND THE BAR?
DO YOU HAVE A SPARE ROOM OR SPARE TIME TO HELP HOMELESS PEOPLE IN YOUR COMMUNITY? Brighton becomes ever more pressured and increasingly difficult for young people to move into supported accommodation or rent privately, more than ever Nightstop hosts are needed to provide longerterm accommodation.
) Reece has been general manager of Legends for almost 10 years and is kept extremely busy running the hotel, bar and nightclub. He’s full of praise for his team of friendly staff who he says are always there to support him and make him smile.
Nightstop is currently in need of more hosts to provide longer-term accommodation for young people, supporting 16-25 years olds in their homes from a week up to a month at a time. They also need volunteers to befriend and mentor young people, providing some one-to-one support during their stay in Nightstop and into settled housing.
Born in Anglesey, North Wales, he had a happy upbringing and his parents were fully supportive when he came out. One of his closest friends was also gay, but there wasn’t anywhere for them to socialise and be fully accepted in Anglesey, so at the age of 17 Reece moved to Manchester, where the gay scene was thriving. After a few years on the Manchester scene, and having gained managerial experience with Johnson Cleaner, he got a transfer within the company to Brighton and when his friend, Collin Day, who was manager at Revenge, asked him if he fancied a bar job at the club, he accepted.
If you have a spare room or some spare time and would like to help to prevent homelessness and rough sleeping locally, contact the Nightstop team for more information about how you can be involved and help out by emailing: coordinator@sussexnightstop.org.u k or call: 07500 770996

REECE ROBERT MANAGER @ LEGENDS
) Sussex Nightstop is a community response to youth homelessness, providing accommodation in the homes of trained and supported volunteers. These volunteers are people from the wide and varied communities of Brighton & Hove who have a spare room or some spare time and want to help make a difference in their local community. Last November, Nightstop were one of the finalists in this year’s BCC Sussex Community Heroes Awards, recognising the important work of their volunteers in supporting vulnerable young people who are homeless and at risk of rough sleeping.
Morgan Fabulous chats with Reece Roberts from Legends on Brighton seafront.
Like many people who worked on the gay scene at that time, Reece felt his colleagues were more like family than workmates. Tony Chapman owned Revenge and Reece says he was a great person to work for. Tony looked after his staff well, so when he bought Legends Hotel, Reece was happy to take the manager’s job there. For many, Legends is the hub of the gay community in Brighton. I’m a frequent visitor there as I like the clientele it attracts, and there’s always a warm and friendly atmosphere. I had never really considered what the hotel above is like, and I know it sounds like I’m writing a yelp review but I was pleasantly surprised at the very high standards of rooms when I got a guided tour. With constant refurbishment and additions to the furniture and decor, the rooms are fresh, sophisticated and modern. Most importantly the staff are really friendly and the rates extremely reasonable for a hotel on Brighton seafront. If you have friends or relatives visiting for the weekend, I highly recommend you push them in the direction of the hotel. The upstairs bar is currently undergoing an £80,000 refurbishment which includes new glass doors, a new floor, new tables, new wall recoverings and reupholstered furniture. I got a sneak preview of some of the designs, and it’s going to look fabu-lous! The bar and club will remain open while the refurbishment is being completed. Reece lives with Justin, his partner of 16 years, and their cat, Dinky, in Peacehaven and in his spare time loves cooking, socialising and keeping fit.

“Thanks to the tremendous support of the men, charities, sponsors, partners, ambassadors and volunteers we are beginning to grow around the UK and I’m really looking forward to being in Hove Park on June 25 to meet all the runners at our inaugural event on the South Coast as I know it is going to be a lot of fun!”
GO DAD GO! Run for your favourite charity in Hove Park at the Go Dad Run on Sunday, June 25, 2017. ) On Sunday, June 25, 2017 an exciting, fun and eye-catching new charity 10K and 5K event for men will take place in Hove Park. Three-time world champion athlete Colin Jackson will be bringing his men’s health project, the Sanlam Go Dad Run, to Brighton & Hove for the first time.
Colin said: “A few years ago two of my uncles were diagnosed with prostate cancer and sadly only one survived. He was the one who talked about his symptoms and sought early treatment and that had a massive impact on me. DEREK REDMOND, DONOVAN BAILEY & COLIN JACKSON
Go Dad Run is open to guys of any age and Colin hopes that hundreds of men and boys will pull a pair of big, blue Go Dad Run Y-fronts over their shorts to help raise awareness of men’s health issues and funds for one of Go Dad Run’s five partner charities. Earlybird registration prices start from just £8 and all registered runners receive a timing chip and full results service, a pair of Go Dad Run Yfronts, PUMA T-shirt, Big Yellow Drawstring Bag and a medal. For full details, view: www.godadrun.co.uk After a long career as one of Britain’s most successful athletes and having won 21 major championship medals, Colin founded Go Dad Run in 2013 when he staged a small 5K run in Wales and this year there will also be events in Sunderland, London, Worcester, Cardiff, Norwich and Bristol.
LEON TAYLOR, COLIN JACKSON, JAMIE BAULCH, DALEY THOMPSON AT 2016 LAUNCH
“I was shocked to discover that 1 in 8 men in the UK will develop prostate cancer and that rises to 1 in 4 men from a black AfricanCaribbean background and yet I had hardly heard anyone mention the illness. That was when I decided to create Go Dad Run as a means of encouraging men to talk about those health issues we so often try to avoid.
Colin will be joined by several Go Dad Run ambassadors in Hove Park and as well as setting the men off on their runs they will all be waiting at the finish to put the medals around the necks of the runners after they cross the line. Among those already confirmed as attending with Colin are six-time world swimming champion Mark Foster, double world athletics champion Jamie Baulch and Royal Ballet soloist and Dancing With The Stars judge Fernando Montano. A number of other major sporting champions will also be announced in the coming weeks. All the money raised in sponsorship by the runners goes directly to the charity they choose to support and details about how to do that are explained at the end of the online registration process.
“Go Dad Run is aimed at all men and we’d love to see dads, sons, partners, boyfriends, grandads, neighbours, friends, work colleagues and teammates sign up and take part and it doesn’t matter if you are a serious club runner or would just like to have a jog, wheel or stroll around the park, it is open to all levels. “Prostate Cancer UK is our Lead Charity Partner for the 5th year and we’re also very pleased that we have three new National Charity Partners. Orchid, who are the UK's leading charity working in the area of male-specific cancers; the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), who are dedicated to preventing male suicide, the single biggest killer of men under the age of 45 in the UK; and Bowel Cancer UK.

26 GSCENE people dressed up glam and drank cocktails in the library, and it was a riot. So, we wanted to revive the spirit of it, so people could look back and laugh at us in the future. Do we have to dress up? Yes. YES. YES!!! Can I bring my mother? Yes. Dead or alive. And you can spin her round, right round like a record, Baby.
LGBT HISTORY BALL Eric Page catches up with jazz legend and singer, the superb velvety voiced Nicky Mitchell, to talk about LGBT History Month and the revival of the Sussex Arts History Ball, the grand live music and dancing event topping off the three-week B Right On arts festival premiering this year in the Phil Starr Pavilion in New Steine Gardens, Brighton. ) You Nicky Mitchell are a living Dykon, what’s your secret for living so long? Two pints of Grecian 2000 a day, sip it slowly through a long straw. Preferably the last one.
NICKY MITCHELL
LGBT History - why is it important to you? Because it is risible we are not more visible, especially when one considers how brilliant, fabulous, effective and influential we are. If we don’t write and record it ourselves then we get written about (or written out - irony), and it’s important to make sure we record our battles, losses and most importantly our achievements.
Were you there for any of the important bits? I was on the Section 28 march, I’m old enough to remember when the Lesbian Avengers abseiled into the House of Commons.
Who’ve you got to sing on the night? It’s all been a bit last minute and I’m still negotiating, but they are going to be big, huge sumptuous voices from across the LGB & T communities who’ll relish the chance to sing with a live band behind them and entertain the audience. What can we expect at the History Ball? Live music, talented local singers, a stinking good band, and I mean BRILLIANT swing jazz, Motown, Vegas lounge and some modern things done in an old fashioned way... A new arts festival for Brighton, does the gay scene need this? Oh we so do, Yes! And necessity is the mother of intervention, both Brighton and the arts festival scene definitely needs a big fat gay intervention. Flair, vibrant style! What do you think people living in the future will look back and think about us? That we were lazy and squandered our liberal freedoms when they offered us the ability to get married and settle down. What does the LGBT community mean to you? Family. Big warm, difficult, loving family.
Who are your Dykons? My living one has to be Claire Summerskill, for her consistent activism and quiet brilliance. As well as being a performer, she is also constantly campaigning for the rights of LGBTQ asylum seekers. She is a truly great woman. My all-time dead Dykon is Radclyffe Hall, who was literally the only lesbian who had a book in Runcorn Library in 1986, although not the only lesbian! Tell us a bit about the History Ball - you hosted some of the legendry ones at Jubilee Library a few years ago and appeared at the sumptuous extravaganzas at the Ship Hotel Ball room... It was epic, everyone loved it - like a big fantastic gay prom. Ourstory had photos of the Sussex Arts Ball from the 1960s and it was fantastic seeing photos of LGBTQ people from way back when. Brighton was well-established on the queer social map and the Sussex Arts Ball was the highlight of the social calendar, in the grim days of post-war austerity was the Sussex Arts Ball. Held in the Aquarium (now Brighton Sea Life Centre) it was started in 1947 and became a magnet for gays of both sexes and everyone else who felt a bit queer. Our balls have balls, they were stunning,
LGBT HISTORY BALL ) The LGBT History Ball is on February 18, at 7pm, in the Phil Starr Pavilion, part of the B Right On LGBT Festival (that’s New Steine Gardens to the rest of you). ) Tickets are £10/£8 concs, available from the B Right On website: www.lgbt-help.com ) The LGBT History Ball will feature Nicky Mitchell and The Full Cream Milks live band with special guest singers followed by DJ Madame Love. ) For more info about the History Ball and the rest of the fantastic festival in the Phil Starr Pavilion, visit: www.lgbt-help.com

The award-winning Lola Lasagne (12) has long been a favourite cabaret performer in London and Brighton. Although it's obviously a drag queen's prerogative not to reveal specifics, let's just say it has been more than a decade and less than a lifetime! Starting out at a number of amateur drag nights in some of London's most colourful entertainment venues, Lola's first professional performances were as a mime act - but this didn't last long. Since then, Lola has worked alongside many of the gay cabaret circuit's greats: Lily Savage, Phil Starr, Dockyard Doris, Maisie Trollette, Ceri Dupree and Dave Lynn. Lola's shows are well-known for ascerbic wit, the killer gag, the wellcrafted put down and the brilliantly sung show-stopper. DANCE MUSIC BY QUEEN JOSEPHINE & KATE WILDBLOOD
ALBUMS ) This month the tunes are as joyful as the hopes only spring can bring, yes it’s time to get loved up and heartfelt. First up is the jazz-fuelled delight that is Songs For Knotty by Ishmael Ensemble on the tasty (sorry couldn’t help ourselves) Banoffee Pies label. One for the lovers. As are the minimal and ambient wonders of S.A.M.’s Dream State Of A Bellmaker on Delaphine and the Various Artists delivering the spacey sounds of Slow Porn presente Prise de Vue 1 on My Favorite Robot Records – although probably best not tell your mum. Longplayers guaranteed to engage the body this month include Alessio Modrian’s
addictive synths of Nuove Tracce (Di Vita Su Marte) on The Dub label, the misty early morning beats of Call Super fabric 92 on Fabric, the brilliant Masai Volume One on Oleeva Records, and the thrilling house showcase that is Techfui Family’s Components on Techfui. As for those making our hearts skip a beat? It has to be the divine sounds of Culoe De Song's Watergate 21 mix, the mustdance acid house undertones of The Mekanism’s Breath on Play It Say It, and the glorious grime of Letta’s Redemption on Coyote Records; a moving moment in electronic music that will stay with you long after spring has bloomed. Enjoy. Catch Wildblood & Queenie’s Home Service on RadioReverb 97.2FM radioreverb.com 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month from 7pm. perfectdistractions.com

Now I’d love to play at an outside venue somewhere sunny - on a beach preferably! Tune you wish you’d never played? I love playing house music because so many tracks are timeless. Though there are a few I played cause they were popular at the time but would probably never play again! Guilty pleasure? ABBA, especially Dancing Queen! Describe yourself in three words? WOLFGANG MUTHSPIEL Rising Grace (ECM). Another ECM set, this time from Austrian guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel supported by an American quartet including star pianist Brad Mehldau and ace drummer Brian Blade. ECM has a reputation for cool and sophisticated music, and this set is a supreme example. Gently chiming acoustic guitar lines, often with a Spanish tinge, probing piano solos and quietly resonating bass and drum support mark out each track, the trumpet of Ambrose Akinmusire adding the occasional flash of brass. Some of the 10 tracks have an almost classical feel, such is their eloquent poise, while Intensive Care could be from a film noir soundtrack. Others are full of twists and turns, or roll along like lilting pop ballads. All of them sound like songs you have heard before, although in fact they are all recorded here for the first time. It all adds up to one subtle, classy set.

PORTICO GALLERY Manchester, www.theportico.org.uk ) I’m taking part in a group show at the Portico Gallery, a long established exhibition space in a stunning and historic space. It opened in 1806 as a Library and Newsroom and still occupies its original Grade II* listed building on Mosley Street. Although The Portico has hosted art and craft exhibitions since the 1960s the current Gallery area is a relatively new addition, having formally opened following the construction of the present floor in 1987.
TOWNER ART GALLERY Devonshire Park, College Rd, Eastbourne BN21 4JJ, www.townereastbourne.org.uk ) THE MUSEUM OF ART (Feb 4th–Apr 16). Inspired by the eclectic collections amassed by 19th century collectors, The Museum of Art uses works from the Towner Collection to playfully reflect the mood and character of a Victorian museum. The installation juxtaposes seemingly disconnected paintings and brings together diverse clusters of sculptures in crowded cases. These unexpected arrangements allude to hidden connections and inspire the viewer to invent their own histories for the works. This display will include the Towner Bequest and works by Henry Moore, Victor Pasmore and Christopher Wood.

The concerts from four Italian cities presented on this four CD A Multitude of Angels represent, according to Jarrett, the pinnacle of his career. Recorded in October 1996, they were the last time he played unbroken improvisations filling each of the four evenings’ two sets, some of them stretching to more than 40 minutes. Danny Boy and, most enchantingly, Over The Rainbow act as encores. A couple of the pieces begin in romantic mood, one with harsh chordal twists and turns, but all four concerts have passages of pure musical delight. At almost five hours of music, this set might exhaust some listeners, but if you’ve not heard Jarrett before, try splashing out on this angelic multitude of notes. If your budget is a bit tight, try Creation, released by ECM in 2015. It’s a single album that uses material recorded at six concerts around the world and sequences them into a new nine-part work. Sort of, the best of Jarrett for beginners.
I’ve found a triptych of artistic opportunities for you to enjoy in February.
PALLANT HOUSE GALLERY 9 North Pallant, Chichester, PO19 1TJ, http://pallant.org.uk ) TRANSFERENCES: SIDNEY NOLAN IN BRITAIN (Feb 18–Jun 14). A major exhibition marking the centenary of the birth of Australian-born artist Sir Sidney Nolan (1917–1992), a leading figure of international 20th century art whose diverse oeuvre saw experimentation with a wide range of materials. The exhibition focuses on the artist’s time living and working in Britain, it brings together works that reveal recurring themes such as Australian history and literature, mythology, and the tragic hero/anti-hero. Iconic works from the 1950s and 60s including paintings of the Australian outlaw Ned Kelly and the unfortunate explorers Burke and Wills are shown alongside Nolan’s sets and costumes from the 1962 Royal Ballet production of The Rite of Spring. The exhibition is part of a nationwide centenary programme presented by the Sidney Nolan Trust throughout 2017, including exhibitions at Australia House and the British Museum.

) KEITH JARRETT A Multitude of Angels (ECM). Ever since 1971, American pianist Keith Jarrett has been recording freely improvised solo piano pieces for ECM, of which The Köln Concert from 1975 is the most famous, as well as one of jazz’s bestselling albums of all time. For these solo albums, mostly recorded live in concert, Jarrett claims to approach the piano with his mind cleared of all preordained musical concepts, to face the keyboard with no forethoughts. In other words, to improvise freely without any idea what he might play, or when. Listening to all of his 16 solo efforts – a gargantuan task, since the Sun Bear Concerts recorded in Japan in 1976 alone extend over 6 CDs – it soon becomes clear that Jarrett in fact sticks closest to what he knows best. Lots of modal vamps and rocking grooves, echoes of the blues, hymns and gospel music, and an increasing use of classical modes unite these varied concerts as one. The music might be totally improvised, but it is always tuneful and it always sticks close to jazz.

REVIEWS ) Countertenor Iestyn Davies is joined by the early music ensemble Arcangelo, directed by Jonathan Cohen, in solo alto Cantatas by J S Bach (1685-1750). These cantatas are the perfect vehicle to demonstrate Davies’ pure, even tone and Arcangelo’s range, from subtle continuo to full ensemble, always maintaining chamber intimacy. The first cantata on the disc, BWV170 Vergnügte Ruh, Beliebte Seelenlust, opens with a beautifully warm aria, with long notes expertly sustained by Davies underpinned by a slow descending bassline and intertwining oboe. The closing aria has an energetic pace,
with impressive organ playing. The building chords and suspensions of the opening aria of Cantata BWV54, Widerstehe doch der Sünde is a highlight of the disc, with Davies delivering an even line over the pulsing accompaniment. The descending chromatic line of the second aria takes Davies into a lower register, yet there is no audible ‘gear change’, and the overall effect is as smooth as the instruments on the same fugue theme. Sandwiched between the alto cantatas, Arcangelo give lively performances of Sinfonias from BWV52 and 174, reworked movements from his Brandenburg Concertos. Arcangelo are spirited and energetic, and these provide a welcome lift amidst the more contemplative mood of the solo cantatas. In the final Cantata, BWV82, Ich habe genug, the combination of warm oboe tones with the smooth, steady line of Davies in the opening aria is incredibly moving, and the central lullaby with its lilting accompaniment is equally touching. An impressive and highly moving recording. Hyperion CDA68111
) Violinist Tasmin Little joins pianist Piers Lane for their second volume of British Violin Sonatas. The meat of the disc is John Ireland’s (1879-1962) wonderful Sonata No. 1. With it’s turbulent opening movement, a beautifully song-like central Romance, and a folksy Rondo to finish, this is a striking work. Little is lyrical and sensitive in the touching Romance, and Lane rises to the challenges of Ireland’s weighty writing for the piano in the first movement, without allowing it to overpower the violin. Sir Arthur Bliss’ (1891-1975) early single movement Sonata is by contrast rather over dramatic and a little over-emphatic. It was part of a fuller Sonata that he was working on when his brother Kennard was killed in WW1, and he abandoned the work, never completing it. The Sonata by Frank Bridge (18791941) that opens the disc is another incomplete work, with the second movement completed by Paul Hindmarsh. The opening is surprisingly brash for Bridge, but it settles down into a more recognisable style, with intriguingly unusual harmonies, and in the second movement, a galloping central scherzo surrounded by a beautifully subdued and lyrical slow section, and a subtle coda. A Romance and Pastorale from Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), both with wandering modal themes, and more than a hint of The Lark Ascending in the Romance, are beautifully performed here, with Little in particular enjoying Vaughan Williams’ meandering, rising lines for the violin. The disc ends with a brief piece by William Lloyd Webber (1914-1982) (father of Andrew & Julian), The Gardens at Eastwell, his final composition. It is a pleasant enough miniature, with a captivating tune, but rather inconsequential when compared with the other works on the disc. However, this is a stimulating survey of some lesser-known yet striking British chamber works. Chandos CHAN10899 ) Pianist Adrian Lord (an old school friend) has just released a recording of his own Twelve Romances for Piano, entitled
Remember, written in memory of his recently deceased mother. Journey. As the name would suggest, this is a very personal set of solo piano pieces, some inspired by significant places, such as childhood holidays in the Peak District, and travels in Scotland. This is a highly enjoyable and atmospheric short set of miniatures, with a common thread of rhythmic momentum and interest over simple harmonic progressions. The result is often very effective and engaging. There are clear references to family roots in the Lancashire mills, with spinning rhythms in Blaize and Revolutions, and a similar sense of perpetual motion in the hypnotic opening Prelude. The pieces are united by their use of repetition and arpeggiated patterns, yet variety is achieved in imaginative use of dynamics, such as in the fiery sections of Wildfire, and the moving concluding Time to

A young girl in 1950s Spain (a remarkably natural and commanding performance from Sonsoles Aranguren) gradually uncovers secrets about her family, including her father's relationship with an actress and, in a darker vein, her grandfather’s role in the civil war. El Sur is a beautiful dream of a film, featuring some of cinema's most painterly compositions which shine in this high-def transfer. Director Victor Erice (The Spirit of The Beehive) only shot two-thirds of the script but what is left – a mysterious unfinished symphony of a film – is a true masterpiece. ) CHAPLIN AT ESSANAY (BFI blu-ray). Last year’s BFI collection of Chaplin’s Mutual films clearly showed early examples of the director/star’s genius. These films, made a year or so earlier, prove, if nothing else, the sheer speed of his artistic development. Because, in truth, they’re not that great. Some of them seem to consist of nothing much but people being kicked in the arse and having soda siphons go off in their face whilst Charlie, somewhat precariously, wanders round holding a plank of wood on his shoulders. As these films are over a century old; it’s not surprising they’ve stuffed with cliches which Chaplin perhaps invented. Of immense historical interest and a few, like The Bank, are as good as his later work but on the whole it’s a patchy collection.

COMICS ) After being probably the breakout star of the Lego Movie, Warner Brothers decided to give Lego Batman a movie and it looks glorious. Don’t believe me? Go and check out the trailers. Go on, I’ll wait here. Are you back now? Good. Doesn’t it look ace? The animation alone is worth the admission price! So as there are no Lego Batman comics to peruse, here’s three of my favourite Batman event stories which I think every Batman fan should read.
GAMES ) Almost a year after being released, Dark Souls 3 has only one more DLC to go before the game is finally complete and finished with. Last year was a good year for Souls fans with Dark Souls 3 being one of the best games of 2016 and the previous DLC, whilst short, was full of new experiences, weapons and a few spells too. So now that the Souls series is winding down, for now at least, what game should a Souls veteran delve into next to get their frustrating but rewarding gameplay fix? Well that should be “games” plural as this month sees the release of two games that might fill the void left behind by Dark Souls - Nioh and For Honor (spelt the American way of course!)
A DEATH IN THE FAMILY Of all the enemies he has faced and hardships Batman has had to endure, the death of Jason Todd is probably the worst experience he has had to go through since the death of his parents. Published in 1988 the storyline sees the second Robin, Jason Todd, tracking down his long-lost mother to Ethiopia. She turns out to be blackmailed by the Joker into giving him supplies to make his deadly laughing gas. After handing Jason over to the Joker, he savagely beats him with a crowbar to near death and blows them both up with a bomb. The death of Robin sent Batman into a dark spiral becoming more violent than usual and even punching Superman in the face. Luckily teenager Tim Drake believes the Batman always needs a Robin and brings Bruce out of the darkness. Bruce keeps Jason’s costume in the Batcave as a constant reminder to never let something like this happen again.
NO MAN’S LAND After Gotham is devastated by a huge earthquake, the US Government declares Gotham a no man’s land by destroying all the bridges into the city. Due to the dwindling law enforcement, Gotham’s criminals and super villains carve up the city into different districts and rule their territories how they see fit. Batman and Jim Gordon work with other heroes to return order to the city; after many months and interference from Lex Luthor the US Government finally reverses the No Man’s Land order. The storyline is notable for introducing Harley Quinn, Cassandra Cain (the third Batgirl) and a new Batman costume. It also saw the death of Gordon’s second wife, Sarah, by the Joker, something the villain strangely found no humour in.
Nioh is an action RPG set in the Edo period of Japan, somewhere around 1600. You take control of William Adams, a fictionalised version of the real William Adams who was the first English man to step foot on Japanese soil and went on to become the first western Samurai. Nioh is brilliantly designed and looks moody and daunting whilst taking in the aesthetics of the period it is set in. The enemies consist of bandits and ronin as well as supernatural threats like Oni which are being summoned from the underworld to destroy Japan. Combat takes place in real-time and like the Souls series it is high stakes sword play that forms the basis of the combat. There are three stances, low, middle and high, each with their own pros and cons, for instance: low is fast but weak with better dodging abilities whilst high is slow but damaging. There is even a parry system in play, something Souls veterans will instantly get on board with. From atmosphere to appearance, the game is basically Samurai Souls and should help fans move on from Dark Souls with hope knowing other developers are looking out for them
NIGHT OF THE OWLS Being the first event since the New 52 came about, Night of the Owls delves into the history of Gotham City and turns everything Batman thought he knew on its head. The mysterious Court of Owls sentences Bruce’s to death despatching their assassin known as The Talon. With the defeat of the assassin, Batman discovers secret rooms hidden within every building funded by Bruce’s own great-grandfather. After a deadly rematch with The Talon in the Court’s lair, Batman spares the Talon’s life and declares war on the Court, vowing he will hunt them down. In response, the Court awakens all their previous Talons and releases them on Gotham that very night to annihilate Batman and his allies!
For Honor on the other hand isn’t much like Dark Souls in way of an action RPG. No, this game is for those Souls veterans who yearn for the PVP (person versus person) battles that come whenever you get invaded. For Honor has been described as a “shooter with swords”, that description alone is all you need to know. You have a choice of three fictionalised factions which represent real world warriors: Legion (Knights), the Chosen (Samurai) and the Warborn (Vikings), with each faction having different classes to choose from. Unique to the game is the Art of Battle system which is activated when you face stronger enemies. You then have the option of where to place your weapon and where to attack, which makes it a game of striking and parrying whilst waiting for that opportune moment of when to attack and defeat the enemy. It is basically a duelling mode with high risk and reward that should come easily to Souls veterans.

WALL’S WORDS
GAY WISDOM
BY MIKE WALL
BY GAY SOCRATES
LGBT+, CAN WE ASK THE HETEROSEXUALS TO JOIN TOO?
IF YOU LIKE TO TAKE IT UP THE A*SE DOES THAT MAKE YOU A SISSY?
) So it is LGBT+ History Month again. I might not win any friends for this article as it may prove a little uncomfortable. I don’t think that anyone who knows me will be particularly surprised about what I’m going to say as I’ve said it all before. I’ve even aired my opinions in this publication on a few occasions about why I don’t think that we LGBT+ folk should be lumped into one ‘community’.
) Last week I had sex with a guy in the sauna. Yay! And afterwards when we were cuddling and chatting in our little cubicle (it can happen sometimes - occasionally) we got on to the subject of how to respond to THAT QUESTION: ‘Are you a Top or a Bottom?’ It’s a question often furtively asked during the course of a bit of fumbling exploratory touch. It seems to be asked by guys in a rush to get to some kind of destination. They ‘ain’t looking for some mutually explored erotic adventure. It’s like they want to fast forward to some live-action, conventionally plugged-in, porn cum-shot.
Now I’m going to appear to be particularly two-faced as I’ve recently become co-chairman on an LGBT+ forum in my place of work. I initially wanted to join this group as I still think that it’s important that minorities should be represented in all aspects of society. We LGBT+’ers are still a minority so let’s ensure that when policy is written, our views, opinions and dignity are considered. However, here is where I will probably face the firing squad - I don’t believe we form any sort of community. I work alongside people of various sex, sexuality, ethnicity etc and I consider myself as part of the wider community which is Brighton. I live here; it’s a very diverse place with people of very varied opinions on religion, sexuality, politics, even down to how often rubbish should be collected from outside our houses. We, appear, in Brighton to be very tolerant of each other. Or written differently we’re accepting of the differences in each other. This is why I love to live in this city.
“I think it’s important that we don’t segregate ourselves and appear to straight people to having this ‘exclusive club’” This is also the reason why I joined the LGBT+ group at work. I wanted to ensure that we, as a forum, also accepted that we work with straight people, who due to one reason or another may just need some education to dispel some myths that may exist in their heads due to the influences of nature or nurture. I think it’s important that we don’t segregate ourselves and appear to straight people to having this ‘exclusive club’. I would welcome any straight person to join our group, as I feel it may open our eyes to some of the issues that they face too. Perhaps it is even time to have an LGBTH+ group, with the H allowing the heterosexuals to come along and join the ‘community’. Anyway, I hope nobody will be affronted by my opinions and feelings on this subject, because I do not intend to offend, in fact the opposite, I want an even more ‘accepting’ society. We’re all human beings, with feelings, emotions, aspirations, wants, needs etc. A set of people who choose to join together can appear to be a clique and this in itself can be dangerous. I like all the people I’ve met in our work group and I think that we can achieve a lot if we stay focused, but also open to the views of others both inside and outside of the forum. By the way happy Valentine’s Day, if you are into that sort of thing!
I usually indicate that I’m enjoying the touch happening right now and that I’m capable of going with the flow of wherever it might take us. Which usually gets us back in the zone! My sauna buddy seemed interested to talk about this topic, so I told him, for the record, that with regard to gender I personally identified as a bigendered. And, furthermore, having reflected on how my bigendered-ness impacts on my sexuality, I’ve come to the conclusion that the feminine pole of my gender is BISEXUAL! She’s into men who are into her femininity and she’s also into women who want to engage in sexual play with her. (Hmm - one of these days that fantasy of a dominant woman with a strap-on taking me to heaven will become a reality!). And then there’s the masculine end of my spectral identity, who is a sexually versatile gay guy. He enjoys f***ing, being f***ed, s*cking, being s*cked, d*minating and s*bmitting. It’s all f*cking great! Then my sauna lover said, ”Well, I’ve done Queer Studies and they said there that ‘bigendered’ doesn’t exist because gender is all fluid-like.” He was young and not a little irritatingly, if not invalidatingly, correct. I suppose! As a sissy child I was ruthlessly coerced into eradicating any element of femininity from my behaviour. I was a quick learner and a good little actor and so rapidly acquired a reasonably convincing straight-acting veneer of false-self. It’s taken years to recognise and challenge the shame that I was made to feel about my sissy self. Thankfully I’m now able to honour and reclaim it as my precious birthright.
”Why do so many men continue to hide and despise their feminine nature? Is it because we live in a patriarchal, misogynist culture?” Why does this ugly gender expression repression happen? And why do so many men continue to hide and despise their feminine nature? Is it because we live in a patriarchal, misogynist culture hating women and seeing men who resemble women as even worse? Whatever it is, we do appear to be stuck with this gender binary thing and it does seem, for many, to touch on something deeply fundamental which shouldn’t be messed with. Maybe I’m just a freak of nature. Maybe most men are just men. In which case that’s just fine too!

CHARLIE SAYS The return of able-bodied legislation by Charlie Bauer Phd http://charliebauerphd.blogspot.co.uk ) Before anyone else kicks off about the NHS all I can say is... I told you so. Again. Why would we think it could ever be any different? There’s a saying that goes, ‘one day I walked down the street and I fell down a hole. The following day, I walk down the same street and I fall down the same hole. Day three - I walk down a different street’. Why would we, us in living memory of some of the worst legislation against the NHS, forget about what went before? Instead of walking down the same street and being surprised when we fall into the same hole - yet still wondering who the hell dug it instead of why it was there in the first place. It’s easy to blame the millennials; the kids interested more in an app on a phone rather than their future health care. But they are not to blame. It’s the babyboomers downwards, who are the real culprits. Those of us who marched against Thatcher’s cuts as well as a host of other legislation - evils such as the miners and their wives demanding a starvation wage, or the kids and students demanding against nuclear proliferation so that they could have a future somewhere, or anti-LGBTQI legislation where born-again police chiefs said that this group, making a reference to HIV, was ‘wallowing in a cesspool of its own making’. Or perhaps for the jewel in the crown of 20th century social reform and proof that the state believed people had a value – the NHS. Back then the Tories failed dismally and it was the poll tax that killed them. Women, men, kids, seniors from across the class divide, marched peacefully against a tax which would exclude the poorest (anti–Thatcher voters) from voting the same regime out. A peaceful protest turned violent and again, the rightwing media and their ‘youth advisers’ in the gutter press blamed the ‘left-wing militants’. All very good when communist Russia was at stalemate with capitalist America and Europe sat in the middle. They called it Theatre Warfare because, as ground-zero, Europe would
be bombed, the superpowers either side looked on apparently protected. After this riot, the Tories had to use another plan. Since the end of Thatcher, Cameron et al have kept her legacy going but knew that they’d have to use another tactic to remove the NHS. Less there is another riot. The ‘snoopers’ charter’, bashed out when Theresa May was Home Secretary, and then implemented above any other policy when she became the unelected Prime Minister, is designed to process legislation against the NHS, amongst other things, by removing the ability of the people to collectively protest. I’m thinking of the recent anti-Brexit march in London where we were prevented from entering certain streets. Some of us peacefully asked why, and eventually a friendly policeman whispered that ‘it was now private property’ that the developer and landowner had decided to close it when the people marched in their own capital city. The poll tax was the second battle of Trafalgar – this time Trafalgar Square - much too close to the palace to allow it to ever happen again. The ‘snoopers’ charter’ means that you will soon be prevented from leaving your house because the facial recognition and everything else will access an enormous algorithm that gives the authorities everything about you in seconds - including the ability to stop you. That granny who has been on every picket line for equal pay for women since the 1970s is now thrown into the same vat as Al (gorithm) Qaeda – the most convenient threat to the West.
The Tories must have been hacked off when cities and citizens bypassed Downing Street and headed straight to Brussels for their basic human rights. Working class British cities who found out 30 years after Thatcher that they were put into ‘managed decline’ because they rejected en-mass the draconian poll tax for the second time in 500 years. Imagine that? Bullying an entire city. Or country. Like when Ireland bypassed the non-existent Tory economic hand-outs and headed for Europe. Then became the technological hub of Europe that manufactured every Apple laptop computer on the planet. What we’re seeing is the same old Tory control but the end of freedom. So, whether you’re battling against any of the ‘good brave causes’ of Brexit, anti-Trump, junior doctors, freedom of the press or, the jewel in the crown, the NHS, the one that keeps us all healthy enough to get out and demand our rights, just watch how our health service becomes a by-product of the upcoming Brexit hell (don’t forget Missus May voted to stay albeit under Cameronian duress). Now they will prioritise cutting the NHS over European Insect Welfare reform or straight bananas or the madness of cocoa solids in chocolate. The Thatcher legacy was actually a promise they are still implementing. But the babyboomers down have also failed the people dismally. The good times did not last forever. Things could not only get better, but worse. ‘Perhaps the Tories will be different this time around? Perhaps I’ll walk down the same street and the hole will have been filled in by the council and I won’t break a bone and be rushed to an NHS hospital...’ I’m able-bodied and relatively healthy. I am a product of the NHS. And the NHS is still the main provider of care for the disabled. One of the things I ask everyone since June 23, 2016 to think about is this - every time you take an elevator in Westfield; or head to see a film or a play on the West End; every time you jump into the disabled toilet without anyone seeing; every time you make a short cut up a wheelchair ramp instead of the stairs. Perhaps those gaps at the end of a train carriage that the huge transport industries have been forced to spend millions on. Those lifts next to the elevators that always seem to be empty. Or the removal of corner kerbs on every street. Or that annoying beep as a ramp slides out of a bus to accommodate a wheelchair. If you think this is the sound of our caring British society you’re both ignorant and wrong. That noise, that beeping, is the sound of EU legislation, now gone.

DEAR READERS...
) Ah love, how am I to talk of it to you, Dear, clever Reader. The thickos use emoticons and Hallmark drivel, I offer you tenderness, wonder, a moment of silence before your memory begs to be left in peace, but before then, let me take you back. Stand with me, in front of Guernica, Picasso’s painting of the Spanish Civil War - we are in a modern art gallery, well at least I am, you are in flashback, like a ghost or a fart, present but incorporeal. It’s Valentine’s Day, late afternoon, 2010.
) It may come as a shock to you that I (with my fantastic wit displayed in this column every other month, and the smashing good looks barely evident in the charming little photo in the top corner) am desperately single! And personally, I blame Walt Disney for the lack of boyfriend in my life.
Standing there, suddenly recognising the thick twisted fingers of the widows of Picasso’s grief perfectly mirror my soul, I make a run for it, out though the endless corridors of Giacometti and throwing myself through the misery of Dali’s endless shriek for immolation I found myself outside, no more world-renowned works demanding I remove my own attention from that greatest work of art, my own ego.
My ideal man, as has been drilled into me by their frivolous happily ever after nonsense, should sweep me off my feet and onto a magic carpet like Aladdin. He should be as strong and sexy as Hercules and, like Prince Charming, he should be hopelessly romantic and utterly, well, charming. Like what's his name, you know, Pocahontas's boyfriend, he should be willing to accept my inherent wisdom and change his ways whenever I show him the light (i.e whenever we have a disagreement and I’m always right). He should further be caring and wise, like Belle's beast. Mind you, I've picked up the odd beast or two in the small morning hours at the Bulldog, but alas, time and time again they have failed to turn into a handsome prince by morning. Yes, until now my prince has not, astride white steed, ridden into my life, and I can’t help but wonder why? Have my ridiculously high expectations prevented me from recognising the regal qualities that lesser mortal men have offered me? Of course I’ve had my share of boyfriends, and whilst never quite coming close to cutting the civil partnership cake together, we have had a lot of fun and good times, but have I found ‘The One’? No, like Snow White, I am still in the glass coffin, waiting.
Shattered, I walk the length of the roof, as is the nature of these converted modern galleries; power stations, slaughter houses and this one an old tuberculosis hospital named after a silently suffering queen, oh how the irony bit hard. It’s a huge, red enamelled roof designed by Phillip Stark and, as this is the world of modern art, no excess is refused. My stark choices reflected by Stark’s choices, acres of highly polished red, which after the monochrome of Guernica and my inner diorama was repugnant, I walk to the edge of the roof and press my face against the glass. At full length it prevented my auto defenestration, and its subsequent misinterpretation as a critique of Giacometti. The sun was setting, I tremble on the edge, nine stories up, pressing against tempered glass and imagining my body tumbling free though the air, never hitting the ground as I have built my wings on the way down, in a Dali-esque escape, beating up up up into the wide blue Iberian sky that even now is streaked with huge gashes of violent orange crepuscular rays as the Suns bid the day farewell one last time. How I ached for it to be over, not life, but day (keep up) this endless plethora of art having clogged up my cynicism so every breath was metaphor, every sigh a curse and mirror broken. I dropped my loom, and crossed the room, I was half tired of shadows, and I exhaled. I saw a golden flash, but unlike the Bint of Shallot it wasn’t of a helmet tra la, tra la, and was more a vibration. It was my pocket, my phone; mundane reality broke the magical reality of my reverie and stopped me short. I pressed the cold hungry glass of the screen; I’d left Grindr on and had walked into an area of free Wi-Fi, those modern oases of the weary contemporary traveller. A perfect Iberian bubble butt flashed up on my phone with an invitation too crude to detail here. In a flash the metaphors dissipated, a location was established and off I went to feed the endless, relentless hunger of the throbbing Gay Game. That was six years ago, caught unawares by huge beautiful worldchanging love disguised as a random shag. I never looked back but rang his bell and decided to be exquisite and never explain.
“Have I found ‘The One’? No, like Snow White, I am still in the glass coffin, waiting” This used to make me unbearably sad, until one glorious day a Fairy Godmother appeared to me and said... no, until one glorious day (okay fine, after some time with a good counsellor) I realised that it’s perfectly fine to be Elsa the Snow Queen, build a fabulous ice palace and live happily without constantly waiting for the prince to come. Is it all that anyway? Finding ‘The One’? I often wonder what they look like now... Arielle, no longer a slender tiddler but an old halibut and Prince Eric, with an ale-belly and hair growing out his ears. Sleeping in separate beds in the castle, avoiding eye contact across that long, long dining table in the royal dining hall. The magic carpet, sun-bleached and several tassels short, lying forlorn in the cellar; Jasmine trying to help little Ali with his algebra that she doesn't understand, whilst Daddy is out ‘looking for another damn lamp’. Am I still waiting for Prince Charming? A part of me always will, Sleeping Beauty and The Little Mermaid have done their damage, but I’ll revise my earlier statement. There is nothing desperate about being single, if you choose not to live it that way. And for now I’ll choose to enjoy all the many facets (and thieves, scoundrels and wicked Grand Viziers) single life has to offer.
56 GSCENE queasy; but for us, the Spencer family, it seems to work and for us two Dads it’s an attempt at therapeutic care without the kids realising it is happening. Trust me though when I say that it isn’t always a love-fest at our house. The fear of love that is so embedded in our daughter leads to major catastrophic meltdowns, slamming of doors, declarations of hatred towards us and screams of how she is unlovable, and its heart-breaking to witness. We wonder if we will ever be able to help her to see how amazing she is. When she’s out with us or with our family or friends she is polite, engaging and draws everyone’s attention, but when home or safely back in the car that sparkling light in her eyes will fade through the sheer exhaustion of being loving and accepting love.
DAD & DADDY For our family, love is a challenge, cuddles, painful, fun and definitely unconditional, says Syd Spencer ) The dictionary tells us that love is ‘a strong feeling of affection’ and ‘a great interest and pleasure in something’. In our house, especially for our daughter, love is, at times, a shield, a barrier and also a weapon. Often when she allows herself to feel safe, loved and wanted, she will quickly dismiss those loving feelings, as they make her feel that she isn’t in control. After all, an emotion we don’t understand or we can’t relate to how we feel about ourselves is a terrifying thing. So we are nearly five years in as parents to our two kids and ‘love’ is probably the thing that we find the hardest to help the kids to understand, give out, sometimes appropriately and accept. Our son will accept love and give it out freely, which causes issues around boundaries, keeping himself safe and not making others feel uncomfortable around him. He will tell his friends at school that he loves them and then they will bully him for it, taunting him that he is gay like his Dads etc. He then gets confused and will usually retreat into himself and become that very quiet little boy that we met back when he was six years old. Questions will then be asked about why can’t his friends love him too? And we try our best to clear up the confusion around friendship love, family love and partner love. His quietness doesn’t last long though and he soon bounces back and starts telling everyone how fabulous he is. Our little girl, who is still only 11 years old, thinks she is already a teenager which then
means, in her mind, that she’s almost an adult, finds love very confusing and scary. Our love for her, and our boy, is consistent. Even through the hardest times, the most frustrating and bizarre behaviours, we remind them that they are loved but sadly there is little love inside our girl for herself. It’s not really surprising as she received little as a young girl from her birth family and the ‘love’ she did get was very dangerous indeed. So every day we tell them they are loved, at bed times, when dropping them off at school and at random times throughout the day. We show love by being tactile, cuddles when they are not expected, kisses on top of their heads as well as kisses goodnight at bed times. Kevin and I have always been tactile with each other and the kids see us hug and kiss each other, our aim is to break down our girl’s fear of love and our boy’s manic obsession with love by making the declaration of it a normal part of daily life. Pretty sickening right? Love, kisses, cuddles every day! It’s enough to make anyone feel
It’s hard work for this girl to reflect the love she receives from others as it is alien to her to receive so much. She has been our daughter for nearly five years now and her lack of love for herself appears to get worse. On the brink of puberty and now going to a school with thousands of other kids she finds it hard to adjust and absorb her fastchanging world. It’s hard for us too as she aims her fear our way with hateful statements, that, although we understand their source, hurt us and have a few times over the years succeeded in making me doubt my role as Dad. Therapists and social workers tell us it’s a good thing because it means she feels safe enough with us to unload her fears etc, that it shows she loves us! It would be nice if she could feel safe enough to show her love through random acts of kindness sometimes or even a cuddle that we didn’t have to ask for, maybe at least a couple of times a month? For us four, love is challenge, the glue, laughter, cuddles, fearful, fun, painful, neglectful, family, strength and definitely unconditional. That’s not to say consequences for bad behaviour are not a regular thing in our home, because sometimes it almost feels daily, but the punishment is always given lovingly and that is always unconditional. I think it’s very telling what our daughter feels about love when her favourite line from her favourite Adele song is ‘Sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts instead’.
“So we are nearly five years in as parents to our two kids and ‘love’ is probably the thing that we find the hardest to help the kids to understand, give out, sometimes appropriately and accept”

MINDOUT Dr Helen Boyle, Brighton lesbian icon, makes mental health history! www.mindout.org.uk
) MindOut celebrates LGBT History Month in time-honoured fashion by commemorating the brilliant work of our predecessor, Helen Boyle, who was a mental health pioneer who laid the foundations for MindOut. Many years later we continue to be immensely grateful for her work and her foresight.
DR BOYLE, PHOTO FROM THE JOURNAL OF MENTAL SCIENCE SEPTEMBER 1939
Why was mental illness seemingly more common amongst the poor? Was tooth decay one of the causes of mental illness? Were housemaids more prone to mental illness than other servants? Should ‘defectives’ be sterilised to prevent the transmission of corrupted seed to future generations? Were poverty and prostitution the result of wickedness, or were they forms of ‘moral illness’? These were some of the issues raised at meetings of the Lunacy Commission, but the more Helen Boyle saw, the more convinced she became that not only was mental illness often an outcome of breadline poverty, but that it could easily be stopped in its tracks if caught early enough. It was, she came to believe, very often preventable. Helen believed if ‘nervous disease’ could be identified early enough it could be prevented from developing into an incurable disability. In this, she was well ahead of her time, and in those days there was no real interest in the prevention of mental illness that might be caused by poverty and social distress. In those days, if you could not pay for private care, the only way to qualify for state help was to be 'certified insane' and put in an asylum. Nothing was done to address the needs of those either not ill enough for the locked ward, or not yet ill enough, a situation which has changed less than might be hoped for in all the years since.
Born in 1869, she transformed the lives of working class women in Brighton & Hove through her groundbreaking approach to understanding and treating the effects of mental distress. As a young doctor she arrived in Brighton in 1897 having worked in London’s East End which had given her first-hand experience of the mental and physical effects of poverty on women. Determined to provide medical services to women she set up the Lewes Road Dispensary for Women & Children with Dr Mabel Jones in the then deprived area of Hanover. The dispensary offered free or low-cost treatment to women who couldn’t afford GPs’ charges, provided by and for women only. The Dispensary depended on the help of wealthy female benefactors, many of them suffragettes. Their clinic was a huge success.
Helen's work, continued by Mind, has revolutionised how we view mental health, the politics of mental health, the social and economic causes of mental distress and the empowerment of those in need of support. Without her work, organisations like MindOut would not exist. Looking back, we wonder how much has changed since Helen's time. At MindOut we are desperately concerned at the rise in people in economic hardship who are struggling with their mental health. We are supporting far more people who are hungry, who can't afford to heat their homes, who have or are about to lose their homes, who are struggling to make ends meet. Unlike Helen's times we do have an NHS which provides mental health services, and we have community groups offering a range of support. But none of these are secure, funding is being reduced considerably, at a time when need is on the increase. These are worrying times for mental health. If you would like to know more or get involved, please do contact MindOut (details below), or see Mind's website: www.mind.org.uk. As for Helen, as well as receiving professional acclaim in the medical sector, she was honoured for her war work in Serbia in 1915. She lived in Pyecombe for the last 17 years of her life with Marguerite du Pre Gore Lindsay, dying aged 88 in 1957. She has a Brighton & Hove bus named after her.

LADY CHICHESTER HOSPITAL, HOVE, 1922
Helen was way ahead of her time, a feminist physician and psychiatrist. She was Brighton's first female GP, the first female psychiatrist at the Royal Sussex County Hospital and the first female president of the Royal MedicoPsychological Association (now the Royal College of Psychiatrists).
The Lady Chichester Hospital later moved to Aldrington House in Hove, which remained a mental health day centre for the next 89 years. Helen Boyle went on to be the co-founder of Mind, the National Association for Mental Health.
MindOut offers a range of confidential, independent, free and person-centred support run by and for LGBTQ people with lived experience of mental health issues. Please do contact us with any mental health concern, mental health query or to discuss your experiences of mental health issues.
In 1905, Helen secured funding from Lady Chichester of Stanmer House, and transformed the Lewes Road Dispensary into the Lady Chichester Hospital for Women & Children With Early Nervous Disease in order to provide essential in-patient care for women in poverty, before they became certifiable. This hospital was also run by women for women.

58 GSCENE and the health service would pay for BA and FFS, the latter being such an important part of safety for so many women like myself who, to be able to move through the world without fear of abuse or much worse, need some tweaks to their facial appearance. And there we have it. Plain and Simple. Why can I not maintain a relationship? Why have I remained mostly single throughout my life despite being regarded as highly desired? Because my sex does not match my gender - it never has. It doesn't matter how many compliments I’ve been paid in the past, those compliments have been directed at my sex, and however well meant those compliments, they fed into my gender dysphoria (GD).
PIC BY ALICE BLEZZARD
At one point in the turbulent year that lead up to the beginning of my transition, when I never saw a time in the future that I would be viewed as a woman, and to be honest, I still don't feel that way now most days, I looked at myself in the mirror and I said, ‘you can be an attractive man or an ugly woman - which is it to be?’. Suicidal ideation made that decision for me and thankfully I began transition.
TRANSITIONING WITH SUGAR My Funny Valentine by Ms Sugar Swan ) February. St Valentine’s Day. Ancient Roman fertility celebration? Christian Priest Valentine who defied his Emperor and performed marriages without his blessing? There are a lot of conflicting takes on the origins of Valentine’s Day but no amount of reading and history takes the sting out of the tail for this time of year for me. Being an absolutely hopeless romantic, I am always so happy to see others in love. It brings a tear to my eye when I see friends and family have 'that look' in their eyes as they look at their partner. I feel a great deal of happiness but those feelings are occasionally smeared with feelings of sadness that I don’t and have never really experienced those feelings for myself. I haven’t been lucky in love over my 35 years construed as male. This has never been for lack of suitors lining up to do what so many have failed to do before them - get me to settle down. I have experimented in relationships with men and women over the years, but of course both sexes were looking for a boyfriend or husband, none of them were looking to me as a girlfriend or wife. If I had £1 for every person that has told me how sexually an attractive man I was over the years I would
have enough money to pay for the facial feminisation surgery (FFS), gender conformation surgery (GCS, vaginoplasty), breast augmentation (BA), hair transplant, laser hair removal and every other expensive treatment that I’m never likely to ever afford to allow me to live the life I deserve, the life I should have been born into, the life that cisgender people take for granted - to have my sex match my gender. I don’t wish to seem ungrateful as the NHS in England will, for some transwomen, pay for hormones, eight sessions of hair removal and GCS. Whilst I’m grateful that I live in a country with a health system, and a health system that recognises the transgender community being in medical need, and in no way claim to have it as bad as my sisters across the world (a plight that I intend on becoming more active in this year), there are places where the coin would have fallen more favourably towards me
I’m in a place now where I’m truly happy with my gender, not my appearance, but my gender. I’m a woman. I know I’m a woman. I feel like a woman, but do I look like a woman? Unfortunately not. This has lead to a years worth (so far) of celibacy for me. When I knew that I was a woman but presented male I was able to pass as male, I was able to have sex with gay men or straight women but now I’m way past that stage, I can't pretend to be male for the sake of sex even if I wanted to which I most certainly don't! Oestrogen is working well for me and there are too many things that now, naked, free of make up, clothing and wigs give me away as not male. I have no body hair, my voice is changing, my skin is softer, I smell different, 75% of my facial hair has been lasered off, my testicles and penis have shrunk, I am unable to get an erection and I have breast growth. So where does this leave me, both sexually and romantically on Valentine’s 2017? Well, it puts me in a pretty good place actually; a better one than I’ve ever been in before as I’m finally being true to myself. My true aesthetic potential may not be realised yet but I go into this year with my mind open to dating and finding people that will accept me for the woman I am with the physicality I currently have whilst I am under transition. Will I get the new body and face I so long for in the coming years? Will I find someone to love me? Who knows, but until then I’ll just have to make the most of what I have and put a brave face on - even if it isn't mine.
“I looked at myself in the mirror and I said, ‘you can be an attractive man or an ugly woman - which is it to be?’. Suicidal ideation made that decision for me and thankfully I began transition”

SAM TRANS MAN Dr Samuel Hall on why loving yourself first can help sustain healthy and happy relationships with others. ) When it comes to writing this column, I’m usually awash with ideas until I actually put pen to paper, at which point all those brilliant soundbites and gems of wisdom that have been popping into my head for weeks suddenly seem to desert me! I’m becoming increasingly familiar with writers’ block, and have considerable sympathy for those who depend on writing to make a living. I really don't think I could take the pressure. As I sit typing at this moment, we’re smack in the middle of what many people believe is the most depressing month, with plenty of evidence to suggest that we really do hit a low some time around the third week of January. So I can add a mild seasonal depression to my writers’ block, and only apologise readers if my ennui rubs off on you. To combat this I’m determined to elaborate on the theme for this issue - love. I’m hoping that my thoughts on the matter will serve to elevate me and anyone who is reading this, out of the winter blues. I’m a lucky soul, I have a LOT of love in my life. I’m incomprehensibly loved by my wife, a fact which flummoxes me on a daily basis - why? what does she see in me? I can be such an idiot, insensitive, self-obsessed, coarse, lazy…. and yet she seems to see beyond all of that to something else. Something at the core of me which she finds adorable. Every now and again I get a glimpse of myself through her eyes, and a flicker of self-knowledge or understanding. The thing is, it’s not really possible to sustain a healthy and happy relationship with another person unless you love yourself first; and loving oneself is no mean feat. We didn't learn to do it when we were younger - most children get negative messages about being themselves from a very young age, and this sets us up from early childhood to not like ourselves very
much. It’s a universal experience, unless life is consumed with the matter of one’s very survival; a shortage of food and somewhere safe to sleep doesn't give time or space for emotional wounding. Most of us have been royally wounded by people we love, some of us badly. It’s not necessarily anyone’s fault. We’re all human, and when it comes to parenting, which is our earliest experience of love, no one is perfect. Our parents (or others responsible for raising us) do their very best, for the most part, to love us. I only found this out when I became one. I know I do my best, and that will have to be good enough, but boy does it feel lousy sometimes. You see ‘my best’ is relative. I’m far from a perfect parent. My kids drive me crazy and often I just wish they would disappear so I can just have some peace. I get scratchy and tetchy and lairy (their word), sometimes I’m downright unreasonable with them, and sometimes I shout and say things I regret later. It’s all a bit of a mess really. Looking back at my own childhood I see the same features of intent and purpose in my parents, coupled with spectacular failure at times. It has humbled me to realise that I really am no better at the job. Allowing all of this to sink in leads me to a place of forgiveness. I can forgive my parents for their mistakes, and forgive myself for mine. I can look at the parts of myself I don't like very much and learn to embrace them, so that my tolerance for my own mistakes becomes greater, and I can largely say, in my fifth decade, that I do love myself. Hopefully not in an egotistical fog of self-aggrandisement, but rather in a gentle and generous way. I apologise for my behaviour when it’s not reasonable, I don’t dwell on my mistakes, I forgive myself when I have messed up and I let go of the past as soon as it has passed,

“My family seem to be falling in love with me for the first time. I feel that acceptance of me as a transgender man is imminent” I think it goes something like this. I move from self-hatred to self-love over many years, which causes me to take the brave step of transitioning. This has the effect of making me a nicer person to be around. I’m being myself, not pretending to be someone I’m not. I like myself for the first time in my life. It shows. When she meets me she meets someone who is comfortable in his own skin and likes being who he is. This is very attractive. We hit it off, and start a relationship. She sees something brave and noble in this, whereas I see a woman who is divine in her understanding of me. She sees me. And through her eyes I see myself. I’ve come full circle and it’s beautiful. So thank you with all my heart to the lovely woman who is my wife. I can only pray that my love for you has the same impact on your life.

rather than hanging on to and building up grudges for future reference. It’s been a battle to get to this point. Blood and tears have been shed and a few psychotherapists have been left reeling. But it’s all been worth it, because I truly think that today, in 2017, I can honestly say I do love myself. I’m proud of my achievements, of my tenacity in the face of adversity, I’m proud that I persevered with my transition in the face of resistance and anger from my family. And I’m especially proud that now, some years down the line, my family seem to be falling in love with me for the first time. I feel that acceptance of me as a transgender man is imminent, and that they’re looking at me with new eyes. It’s hard not to attribute this to my marriage last year. There is something about it that has caused a seismic shift in the extended family dynamic. It’s quite difficult to put my finger on, but I know that it has a lot more to do with her, than it does with me.

LIAISON TEAM BY PC SARAH LAKER & RORY FINN
FUTURE FORWARD ) History is always in the making. Every day people are doing the small things that add up to greatness. Fifty years ago the small things came together in the form of landmark legislation that decriminalised sexual acts between men in private. It’s shocking that our kind of love was ever a criminal offence (women aside, famously Queen Victoria thought “women do not do such things” and refused to legislate against lesbian acts). The 1967 Act was a major step forward in the long journey to equality for LGBT people. Not one that we’ve completed, tempting as it is to believe. Despite changes, we still don’t have equal marriage (a recent petition to recognise adultery and same-sex relations is testament to that). Young people are still being bullied at school and as adults we suffer disproportionately from mental health issues. And don’t get me started on trans issues… That said, it’s really important to reflect on what we’ve achieved in 50 years to give us hope of what the next 50 years could bring. I sincerely hope that the march of time does not usher in a new era of the clock being turned back, as has happened elsewhere. We need to do what we can to guard against any attempts to legislate us back into the closet. So how can we do this? One of our many tools is to use the law as it stands and to make sure our institutions adhere to it. This means calling out organisations that fail in their duty to protect us from discrimination (Equality Act 2010). It also means reporting hate crime when it happens. I think it’s fair to say many of us try to shrug off incidents as a one off that isn’t worth reporting. All incidents are worth reporting and there are things we can do about it. Brighton & Hove Police have been pioneering new ways of tackling homo, bi or transphobic hate crime. This month’s example of how we dealt with a homophobic tweet is a good example (see below). Our Restore DiverCity intervention creates a mechanism for those harmed by hate to have their say and for those perpetrating hate to put things right. Finally, it’s my turn to become a footnote in LGBT history. I’m moving on from my role as civilian LGBT liaison to go on a 6 month secondment elsewhere with Sussex Police. At time of writing my successor has not been confirmed, but PC Sarah Laker remains in post so do contact her if you need her support.
DECEMBER STATS ) In December we had 16 anti-LGBT crimes including a homophobic tweet sent by a former footballer turned TV commentator. On advice from our LGBT external reference group, the crime was dealt with by Community Resolution. To make amends, the man made a public apology via Twitter and has agreed to do voluntary work with charities that campaign to rid football of homophobia through education.
