Radio Free Brighton won the prestigious Community News Award at the 2012 Technology4Good Awards last month. The award recognises groups and projects that are using technology in interesting and empowering ways to improve the lives of their local community. Described at the ceremony as building “a stronger, more diverse, and integrated community” the station constantly strives to reflect the diversity of Brighton & Hove, with shows covering a range of topics including LGBTQ+ programming, environmental issues, human rights, numerous campaigns and community groups, local music and events as well as shows in other languages, including French, Spanish, Polish, Greek, and Arabic. GAY HUMANISTS CONCERNED AT STONEWALL REPORT ON HOMOPHOBIC BULLYING
GEORGE BROADHEAD
The UK gay humanist charity, the Pink Triangle Trust (PTT), has expressed its great concern at the findings of the latest Stonewall report on school bullying. The new report, published by Stonewall, has shown some improvement in the level of homophobic bullying in schools since its previous one published in 2007. However the report, entitled The School Report: The Experiences of Gay Young People in Britain's Schools in 2012, has found that the issue remains widespread, and continues to be a greater problem in religious schools than elsewhere. The report finds: • Only half of LGB pupils report that their schools say homophobic bullying is wrong, even fewer in faith schools at 37%. • One in four (26%) LGB pupils, and more than one in three gay pupils in faith schools (36%), report that teachers who hear homophobic language never challenge it. • Faith schools are still less likely than schools in general to take steps to prevent and respond to homophobic bullying. • While no gay young people said they experience ‘bullying’ by teachers, 17% say that teachers and other school staff, however, make homophobic comments. This increases to 22% for pupils in faith schools. George Broadhead, the PTT’s Secretary said: “The fact that the problem is greater in religious schools isn’t surprising. Hardly a day goes by without some report about religious hostility to LGBT relationships and rights and some of it, like that from the Scottish Cardinal Keith O’Brien, is sustained and downright vicious. All this is bound to have a bad influence on both teachers and pupils in the ever increasing number of religious schools.”

MP DAMIAN GREEN
Stonewall has described as exemplary the work the council does jointly with its good practice schools and local LGBT charity, the Allsorts Youth Project. Young people from Allsorts deliver training to council and school staff and provide antihomophobic bullying sessions in secondary PSHE lessons. The commitment to tackling homophobic bullying in the city, demonstrated over a number of years, which came out of work by the Labour inspired ‘equalities forum’, is duly recognised, and Stonewall also praises the council for regularly collecting data from young people and giving them the chance to talk about their experiences. Cllr Phélim MacCafferty, deputy leader of Brighton & Hove City Council, said: “We know that our young LGBT population faces extra challenges, so I am incredibly proud of this award. In completing the index we are saying very clearly that we celebrate diversity and want to make a positive difference to our young LGBT citizens and indeed to the lives of all young people in the city.” Marianne Lemond, Allsorts project manager said: “We’ve worked closely with the council for several years to ensure that local schools are more inclusive and safe spaces for LGBTU young people and we’re delighted this work is getting due recognition.”
Following the shelving of the Ukrainian Parliament’s scheduled vote on legislation that would ban any Ukrainian citizen from speaking out favourably about gays or lesbians, Mike Weatherley, the Conservative MP for Hove & Portslade, has reiterated the importance of keeping up pressure on countries around the world that continue to infringe upon the rights of gay people. Mike has praised the contribution by All Out, a gay rights lobbying organisation which was instrumental in highlighting the issue around the world. A petition against the legislation that was organised by All Out and signed by over 120,000 people was handed over to the Ukrainian authorities at the EU. Mike is a strong supporter of gay rights at home and abroad. He raised the issue of same-sex marriage with the Prime Minister last summer and is pleased that the government is pushing ahead with legislation that will afford same-sex couples equal civil marriage rights. Mike said: “I was contacted by a number of concerned residents about the anti-gay legislation which is being debated in the Ukraine. The proposed legislation is absolutely despicable and I welcome the campaign by All Out to highlight this issue. I know that my ministerial colleagues condemn discrimination against the LGBT community in Ukraine and am proud that the UK is considered the best place in Europe for gay people to live in terms of legal rights.”
Police are appealing for the victim of an assault in St James' Street, Brighton in the early hours of Saturday, June 30, 2012 to come forward. However, we’d really like the victim to come forward to give him help and support if he requires it and to assist with the investigation.” If you were the victim or you have information about this assault please call 101, quoting serial 0178 of 30/6, or call the independent charity, Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111.
IMMIGRATION MINISTER REFUSES TO MEET POLITICIANS TO DISCUSS EXTRADITION LAW
Damian Green, the Immigration Minister, has refused to meet with Caroline Lucas MP and a cross party delegation of MPs to discuss extradition law. The group have grave concerns about the government’s ongoing delay in implementing the wishes of the House of Commons, which last year called for an urgent Bill to address the imbalances in UK extradition treaties. Caroline said: “I’m outraged by the government’s lack of concern for the democratic process and for individuals and families suffering because of the current extradition laws. “The Minister has used pending court cases and decisions to be taken by the Home Secretary as grounds for refusing to discuss the matter with MPs from across the political spectrum, many of whom have constituents facing imminent extradition and possible breaches of their human rights. “These decisions about what happens to British citizens and their right to a British trial are precisely why a meeting with the Minister is so important, and why it’s so unacceptable that the government are continuing to stand in the way of justice.”

Brighton & Hove City Council has been named top local authority for tackling homophobia and homophobic bullying in schools by gay equality charity, Stonewall. The council has come 1st in this year’s Stonewall Education Equality Index which benchmarks the performance of different councils using a wide range of measures, including: • What policies councils have for working with schools and spreading best practice in tackling homophobic bullying and homophobic language • How much training and guidance is available for teachers and youth workers on sexual orientation and LGB issues and also diversity of family make-up • How much local youth and LGB groups are involved in supporting schools and their pupils • Surveying young people to find out their experiences of bullying

SAFETY GUIDELINES ISSUED FOR WINDOW BLINDS AND SHUTTERS AFTER TRAGIC DEATH OF TWO YEAR OLD
M A two-year-old boy hanged himself with the cord from a window blind while standing on a stool to try to see out of his bedroom window, an inquest was told. Arthur Winfield was left brain-damaged after the accident at his home in January. He died later in Great Ormond Street Hospital. A verdict of accidental death was recorded by the Coroner. The accident came five months after another two year old Emily Walker, suffered a similar accident at her Hertfordshire home last August. She died in December. The British Blind & Shutter Association (BBSA) is urging homeowners and building users where young children live or may visit to ensure they consider reducing the possible risks associated with window blind operating cords and chains. As a member or BBSA, Sussex Blinds (Brighton) Ltd, a regular advertiser in Gscene magazine, fully supports the BBSA’s Make it Safe campaign and all blinds that they make and sell comply with the current standards. Their advice for homes and buildings where children live or visit is: • When buying a new blind consider one which does not have operating cords or chains or has concealed cords and chains. • If you have an existing blind keep any operating cords or chains out of a child’s reach or better still get a retrofit device to improve safety of cords and chains. • Do not tie cords together and make sure they do not twist and create a loop. • Move cots, beds and furniture away from windows and blinds as children love to climb. Sussex Blinds (Brighton) Ltd are committed to the BBSA’s Make it Safe code, for more information on blind cord safety, either contact or visit their showroom, where they will give you the best possible advice on the most appropriate choice of blinds and the ways to make it safer. SCOTS DECISION TO DELAY ANNOUNCEMENT ON SAMESEX MARRIAGE ANGERS EQUALITY CAMPAIGNERS
STONEWALL CALLS ON GOVERNMENT TO EXPEDITE MARRIAGE BILL
Tom French, Policy Coordinator for the Equality Network, said: “It’s time the Scottish Government demonstrated its leadership on this issue and announced a decision. Same-sex marriage is supported by the majority of Scots and the majority of MSPs. The government have had seven months to analyse the consultation responses and to deal with the detail. We cannot understand why there is any need for further delay. “The government created huge expectation, not least amongst national and international press, and have failed to deliver today. It is unfair to keep dangling the prospect of equality in front of LGBT people, only to snatch it further away again. The government should now set a date for announcing their decision, and stick to it.”
Some People Are Gay. Get On With It! postcards, social media profile pictures and banners are part of Stonewall's continuing campaign for equal marriage, following the government’s recent consultation. Ministers have promised to introduce equal marriage by 2015, however the proposal was not included in the recent Queen’s Speech. A recently published YouGov poll commissioned by Stonewall showed that 84% of people under the age of 30 support the proposal.
TOM FRENCH
Equality campaigners in Scotland are furious by the Scottish Government’s decision last month to delay a promised announcement on same-sex marriage. The delay has been criticised by the Equality Network, the LGBT equality charity that campaigns for Equal Marriage in Scotland. A spokesperson for the organisation said: “It is hugely disappointing that yet again we are being told to wait for an answer that never seems to come.”
Following a meeting of the cabinet the Scottish Government released a statement ruling out any referendum on 'same-sex marriage' which read: “The Scottish Cabinet today had the opportunity to discuss same-sex marriage in great detail and consider all views represented in the consultation responses. “This is an important issue and it is right that Cabinet takes the time to get both the principle and the detail of the decision right. During the discussion, recent calls for a referendum on the subject were carefully considered. However, Cabinet views this as an issue of conscience not constitution. Given that if a Bill is brought forward it should in the view of the Scottish Government be determined by a free vote, Cabinet has concluded that a referendum would not be appropriate. “Cabinet has now asked a Cabinet sub-committee, led by the Deputy First Minister, to further examine some particular issues of detail before a final decision is reached. We remain committed to publishing the consultation responses and our clear decision on the way forward before the end of this month.” The Equality Network, said the announcement was welcome but called on the Scottish Government to ensure “no further delays”. Tom French said: “We welcome the announcement that same-sex marriage will not be the subject of a referendum – that would have been completely inappropriate. LGBT people across Scotland will be very disappointed tonight that no further announcement has been made. It is now vital to the government’s credibility that a clear and positive decision is announced before the end of the month.” A majority of MSPs and a majority of the public have said they support same-sex marriage. In June the Equality Network announced that a majority of MSPs had signed its Equal Marriage Pledge, committing themselves to voting in favour of same-sex marriage. 74 MSPs have now said they will vote in favour, including the leaders of all the opposition parties. Just nine MSPs remain opposed. Opinion polls have shown consistent public support for same-sex marriage in Scotland. The most recent poll was conducted in mid June by Ipsos MORI on behalf of the Equality Network. It showed record support with 64% of Scots in favour of a change in the law, and just 26% opposed. Separate polls conducted over the past two years by Populus, YouGov, Angus Reid, and the Scottish Social Attitudes Survey, have all shown similar levels of support.
Stonewall, the LGB equality charity have launched a range of visual materials encouraging the government to expedite its plans to extend the legal form of marriage to gay people and permit religious denominations to celebrate same-sex marriages.
Ben Summerskill, Stonewall Chief Executive, said: “The Deputy Prime Minister, a great supporter of equality, recently talked of “argy-bargy” around equal marriage. We can help him cut through it – our very straightforward Draft Marriage Bill was published months ago. Much of the work is done – it really is time for the government to get on with it.” Ruth Hunt, Stonewall Director of Public Affairs said: “We’re determined that samesex marriage won’t turn into another tuition fees issue, announced with much fanfare and then quietly dropped. We trust the understandably high volume of responses to the government’s recent consultation won’t be used as an excuse for shunting the issue towards the end of this parliament.” Stonewall’s new ‘Some People Are Gay. Get On With It!’ postcards in support of same-sex marriage are available online hard copies can also be ordered free. Facebook banners and profile pictures are available too.
LIVERPOOL FC TO MARCH ON LIVERPOOL PRIDE PARADE
Liverpool Football Club (LFC) will become the first Premier League club to officially be represented at a UK LGBT Pride event when they march at this year’s Liverpool Pride on August 4, 2012 at 11am. LFC will provide a banner featuring the club crest with LFC staff and LFC Ladies FC marching together with LFC LGBT and other supporters on the parade. The club will also have a stall at the market place on the day at the festival’s Waterfront site and will provide signed merchandise for fundraising auctions. LFC has worked with Liverpool Pride on the ‘Football v Homophobia’ tournament, which was hosted at the club’s Academy for the first time earlier this year. They also support the Brighton based Justin Campaign, a national organisation aiming to challenge Homophobia in football and strive towards a future where everyone is accepted within all levels of football. LFC supporters, whether they be LGBT or not, are welcome to join the club’s representatives behind the LFC banner on the Liverpool Pride March. Liverpool Pride would be delighted for other football clubs and their supporters to march also, whether they are from professional or pub league clubs. Supporters not wishing to walk behind an LFC banner are welcome to register as a separate club and bring their banners along. Ian Ayre, Managing Director at Liverpool Football Club, said: “At LFC, we continue to demonstrate our commitment to ensuring that equality and principles of inclusion are embedded into all areas of Liverpool Football Club and for many years, we have taken positive steps to promote our stance against homophobia both on and off the pitch.” Now in its third year, Liverpool Pride coincides with a whole weekend of cultural events taking place across some of the city’s most influential arts establishments. This year’s Nautical But Nice theme gives a nod to the city's commemoration of the 100 year anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, whilst at the same time, celebrating the city's rich maritime history and location on the banks of the River Mersey. Marcus Collins, X Factor winner in 2011, who is headlining the festival's waterfront stage will be joined by Jessica Wright, TOWIE star, X Factor finalists Two Shoes and ex-Atomic Kitten Liz McClarnon. REVOLUTION - THE DIRECTOR'S CUT (BFI bluray). Hugh Hudson's 1985 epic looks at the American War of Independence through the eyes of ordinary people like a fur trapper (Al Pacino) and his son (Sid Owen and later Dexter Fletcher) caught up in the events. Famous for being a critical and commercial disaster, the film is unquestionably not the turkey that its reputation would suggest. However, it's not the neglected masterpiece that some critics in the accompanying booklet would suggest. The film has very little narrative Pacino and his son enlist in the army, they fight some battles and there's a half-baked romance with Nastassja Kinski. Its political overview is similarly limited as the film has no interest in looking at the context of the war. In fact the only time we see famous historical characters (George III and Washington) they're in the form of statue and cloth effigy respectively. But the battles scenes are effective, Pacino is decent and some of the images - in the BFI's immaculate transfer - are striking. It's an honourable failure, but still a failure. PIGSTY (Eureka DVD). With its critique of the inhumanity of those in power Pasolini's 1969 film seems to be a dry run for his infamous last work Salo. Part of the story looks at the decadent life of the rich bourgeoisie. In particular Julian (Jean-Pierre Leaud), the scion of a wealthy industrialist, who forsakes his intended bride for, well, a pig. In a parallel story two medieval serfs wander around an apocalyptic landscape trying to eat each other. The film has a certain ambiguity over exactly what is being criticised. Some of the anti-capitalist rants are so over the top they have been taken by some as a satire on lazy satire. But despite its obscurity it's never less than hypnotic; it's a difficult film, but - unlike other difficult films - it is, in its own way, peculiarly entertaining.
