Iconic Canadian musician Peaches tops the bill, bringing all her ground shaking, boundary pushing brand of electroclash for what’s set to be a stellar set.

This year’s Brighton & Hove Pride campaign raises awareness about the oppressive laws in countries that prohibit their LGBTQ+ citizens from enjoying the fundamental freedoms and rights that many take for granted. The campaign will have a number of activities that anyone can view and participate in, including a physical exhibition in the windows of Jubilee Library, Brighton, as well as a city-wide exhibition of banners on lamp posts in high profile sites across Brighton & Hove.

Fundraising for grassroots projects is also a key feature of Brighton & Hove Pride. For 2024, Pride is working with, and fundraising for three special grassroots causes: Trans Pride Brighton, Grassroots Suicide Prevention and Medical Aid for Palestinians

As always, the much-loved Brighton & Hove Pride LGBTQ+ Community Parade will open the weekend at 11am on the Saturday, and other Brighton & Hove Pride favourites including the Pride Village Party and Pride Community Day & Dog Show will make their rainbow-coloured return.

Brighton & Hove Pride say: “Firmly established as the UK’s most popular international Pride festival, Brighton & Hove Pride is as famous, vibrant, popular, and unique as the city itself.

“Our sole ethos is to promote diversity, inclusion and education within our communities while raising much needed funds for our local LGBTQ+ charity and community groups and projects distributed through the Brighton Rainbow Fund and Social Impact Fund.

“With community at the heart, this year’s Pride celebration theme is JOY: celebrating life, spirit, and resilience.”

For 2024 we are delighted to be working with, and fundraising for: Trans Pride, Brighton & Hove; Grassroots Suicide Prevention and Medical Aid for Palestinians.

Each has been assigned an allocation of discounted fundraising tickets and will benefit from at least 50% of any sales that they secure, allowing their networks to buy FABULOSO tickets knowing their purchase will directly benefit their chosen charity or community group.

TRAVEL WITH PRIDE

Enhanced train services for Brighton Pride Weekend.

We are encouraged that GTR, the rail operator that manages Southern and Thameslink, has confirmed their plans to run additional trains with extra carriages to support the event.

Thanks to their work on resilience plans and strengthening their resources, if they were to be faced with the same scenario for Brighton & Hove Pride Weekend as last year, they have confirmed they would be able to serve the city.

Train operators GTR have liaised closely with Pride organisers and are part of the year-round strategic planning group alongside the local council and Blue Light services.

The strengthened train service will boost capacity and help people get to and from one of the biggest events in the Pride calendar.

Paul Kemp, Managing Director of Brighton & Hove Pride, said: “We welcome the news of strengthened train services and the resilience planning. We have had many months of planning meetings with GTR, and we are grateful to the whole team for

committing time and effort to plan the best possible services over Pride weekend. Train services into our city are essential for tourism all year round, as well as for the future success of Pride.

“We welcome the news of strengthened train services and the resilience planning.”

“We’ve also added the option of booking protection on all Pride events for extra customer reassurance.

“We are excited to work more collaboratively with GTR and expect this year to be one of the best for Pride in the city.”

Chris Fowler, Head of Network Operations at GTR, said: “With so many fantastic things to see and do across Brighton & Hove Pride weekend, we’re really looking forward to bringing people to and from the city to celebrate Pride.

“As this is a largescale event, we’re again working incredibly closely with event organisers and city partners to ensure Pride visitors can have lots of

fun, whilst keeping safe.”

How do I plan my journey to Brighton?

You can check journey options and book tickets for trains directly at www. southernrailway.com or www.thameslinkrailway.com

You can also look at coach services such as www.nationalexpress.com and local bus services at www.buses. co.uk

Planners such as www.traveline. info can give you ideas as to how to combine different public transport options.

For rail journeys, Preston Park and London Road stations will be closed during the event, so travel to and from Brighton station.

2023 was very disrupted by industrial action, what happens if something similar happens again?

While Pride does not run the trains, we have been working collaboratively with the train operator. While we very much hope it will not be needed, Govia Thameslink Railway has resilience plans in place so that Brighton station would still be served if we faced a similar scenario in 2024.

We also have Payment Protection insurance available, so you can book Pride event tickets in total confidence.

FOSTERING CHANGES LIVES

Fostering

) Foster carer Gary has been fostering with his husband Mike for four years. Initially approved as Supported Lodgings carers in 2020, Gary and Mike now foster teenagers and say it’s a “rewarding and inspiring journey” they would “recommend to anyone”.

Gary has shared some of his journey; the thoughts and questions that led him and Mike from apprehension, to the fulfilment they now feel as experienced foster carers who make a lasting and invaluable difference.

“It’s January 2020, just before we knew the word COVID, and my husband and I had just been approved to be supported lodgings carers. We’d just moved to the beautiful city of Brighton & Hove; famed for being pro-equality and diversity. Having worked with disadvantaged young people in our home cities, we asked ourselves what it might be like to care for a 16-21 year old full time. Would we be good enough? How would our lives change? Would the young person in our home need constant care? Or would we just be rubbish at it?!?

“Working for ourselves and enjoying cooking, we felt we had the skills to

teach a young person how to get work, stay in work, cook and budget. But what about everything else? As fairly youthful 40 year olds, we wondered whether we’d have the skills to teach him how to become a young man? We thought, do we even know how to be proper adults ourselves? As a gay couple, we aren’t birth parents, so would we know what he needed? Could we actually HELP?

“Our Social Worker had given us insights into what we could expect as part of our journey to become carers, but every young person is different. There’s no prescription for what we needed to do, how we needed to help or what was expected of us – although our training had covered areas such as settling in, looking for work, budgeting and life skills.

“Having helped our nephews grow up to become young men, we had some ideas about what a young man goes through. We even remembered a little about our own time being young, which as we’re constantly reminded of these days, was an awfully long time ago!

“Then suddenly there he was, sitting in our living room, our first young man. WOW! I say “this is scary.” It took some time to navigate our relationship and

we wondered all the time how we could become role models to him. We had our fingers crossed. We hoped we could get to know this young guy and that he would accept us.

“Two years later, he did and we are now caring for a 16 year old too! We have enjoyed it so much and we’ve just been approved as foster carers as well as supported lodgings carers! It’s a rewarding and inspiring journey we would recommend to anyone!”

Supported lodgings carers provide a stepping stone to independence for young people, whereas foster carers provide a family life for children who cannot live with their own parents.

Brighton & Hove City Council

Fostering Service is proud to have many LGBTQ+ foster families within their fostering community, who provide many different types of care depending on circumstances. The team will do all they can to help and guide you to choose the type of fostering that is right for you.

The fostering team have strong links with Brighton & Hove LGBTQ+ community groups and are keen to hear from more LGBTQ+ organisations that can help raise awareness.

) Join Dukes Lane businesses to enjoy Brighton & Hove Pride, this August, as the Lane transforms into a bustling hub with two days of free live entertainment, exclusive offers and much more, on Saturday, 3 and Sunday, 4 August

Organisers say: “Brighton & Hove Pride 2024 is set to be an unforgettable celebration of love, diversity, and unity, and there’s no better place to soak up the vibrant atmosphere than at Dukes Lane.”

Saturday, 3 August

Sunday, 4 August

The celebrations continue throughout the weekend, with a performance by the Actually Gay Men’s Chorus from 2pm. Known for their powerful voices and moving renditions, the chorus

will fill Dukes Lane with melodies that resonate with the values of Pride – love, acceptance, and unity.

It’s wonderful to see the community come together to celebrate diversity and creativity, and we look forward to welcoming residents and visitors to join us!”

In addition to the live performances, Dukes Lane gallery They Made This will be unveiling an Instagram-worthy new mural, located opposite their store, perfect to take those Pride photos with. Organisers add: “Dukes Lane, with its charming boutiques, vibrant atmosphere, colourful rainbow bunting and new mural, provides the perfect backdrop for the upcoming Pride festivities - and all involved are excited to see the community come together for a weekend filled with joy, music, and celebration.”

This event has been organised in collaboration with Brilliant BrightonBrighton Improvement District (BID) - which has recently welcomed Dukes Lane as associate members.

ZERO HIV STIGMA DAY

Brighton & Hove community comes together for the annual HIV Stigma Day community gathering. Pics by Simon Pepper Photography

) Sunday, July 21 was Zero HIV Stigma Day, a global initiative uniting people and communities to raise awareness of HIV and take action to eliminate HIV stigma in all its forms. As part of a series of local activities, a community gathering in Jubilee Square, Brighton drew crowds to hear messages of how HIV has changed.

This year’s theme was Beyond Labels: Redefining HIV Narratives. The event was opened by Chair of the Brighton & Hove Fast Track City HIV Stigma Group, Eileen Nixon, and compered by local drag artiste Mary O’Kart LGBTQ community choir Rainbow Chorus gave moving performances that reflected the themes of the day.

A diverse group of people living with HIV who are involved in local HIV organisations each gave a heartfelt speech, sharing different perspectives of living well with HIV, and demonstrated how the community of people living with HIV has mobilised to overcome and help end HIV stigma.

Amongst the many messages of lived experience of HIV, speakers reflected with insight and passion on the important message that HIV is a treatable, manageable health condition, but HIV stigma still hurts and

can prevent people from testing or from accessing treatment and care when they are diagnosed.

HIV stigma negatively affects quality of life for some people living with HIV, and can make them feel alone and isolated when treated differently to everyone else. The audience was encouraged to take away the examples and messages of how HIV has changed, and to know that it will take everyone’s involvement to share the news of how HIV has changed if we want to end HIV stigma.

The event was closed by Brighton &

Hove Community Works Voluntary Sector HIV Rep Gary Pargeter, reflecting on the fact that people living with HIV were front and centre in the planning and delivery of the event. This was followed with a reminder that that the call to action to help end HIV stigma is not just to those already part of or close to our communities, but for us all “to reach as widely as we possibly can, engage more people across communities, to all those who haven’t yet heard or learned how HIV has changed.”

The Zero HIV Stigma Day event was funded by Brighton & Hove City Council and Martin Fisher Foundation If you want to learn more about HIV and how to help end HIV stigma, contact any of the local HIV organisations, or visit the Brighton & Hove City Council website and search ‘HIV’.

TRANS PRIDE BRIGHTON 2024

The vibrant heart of Brighton & Hove was filled Trans Joy on Saturday, July 20 where Trans Pride Brighton & Hove 2024 unfolded in a spectacular display of solidarity, joy, and resilience. Pics by Chris Jepson Photography

) The city’s streets came alive last month with a sea of TNBI and LGBTQ+ flags as an estimated 45,000 people gathered to celebrate the transgender and non-binary community in a triumphant showcase of love and acceptance.

This year’s Trans Pride Brighton event, spread across four bustling venues in the city centre, was a testament to the strength and visibility of trans and non-binary communities. Allies, families, and tens of thousands of trans and nonbinary individuals turned out in force, their presence a powerful statement of unity and support.

The air was electric with excitement as attendees of all ages, backgrounds, and identities came together to march for equality. The diversity on display was truly heartening – from elders who had fought for trans rights for decades to wide-eyed children experiencing their

first Pride event, the crowd represented the full spectrum of the TNBI, QTIPOC and LGBTQ+ community and beyond.

As the large vocal protest march wound its way through Brighton’s historic streets, bringing the city to a standstill, it was impossible to ignore the strong political undercurrents that ran through the event. Marchers carried banners and placards that spoke volumes about the ongoing struggles faced by the trans community – ‘Trans Rights Are Human Rights’, ‘Protect Trans Youth’, and ‘F*&K the Cass Review’ were just a few of the powerful messages on display.

There was overwhelming support for trans children. Countless signs and chants echoed the urgent need to safeguard the youngest members of the trans community. Parents marched alongside their trans children, with pride and determination. It was a poignant reminder that the fight for equality is

not just about the present, but about securing a brighter, more accepting future for generations to come.

The atmosphere was a perfect blend of celebration and activism. While the drummers drumbed and glitter sparkled in the summer sun, there was no mistaking the resolute determination of the attendees. Our community united in its demand for change, for acceptance, and for the right to live authentically without fear or discrimination.

Brighton, long known as a bastion of LGBTQ+ culture in the UK, truly outdid itself for Trans Pride 2024. The entire city centre was transformed into a gender queer wonderland, with every corner seemingly dedicated to the celebration. From the bustling food stalls offering an array of cuisines to the pop-up shops selling TNBI merchandise, the event had something for everyone.

The four main venues – each with its own unique flavour – were packed to the brim with revellers. At the Brighton Corn Exchange, a series of vibrant thumping bands took over the stages, thrilling the audience. New Steine Gardens hosted a community village with stalls covering topics from trans healthcare to workplace inclusivity along with a hugely popular DJ dance tent.

Dorset Gardens hosted a family-friendly picnic area, with a live stage of singers, and performers, community food stalls and crafters alongside community activists’ stalls with face painting and storytelling sessions that captivated children and adults alike. The Dorset Gardens stage saw speeches from prominent trans activists interspersed with show-stopping performances. The Mayor of Brighton & Hove also appeared and joined the attendees to meet, talk to and celebrate the hard work of the diverse communities creating a family friendly space in Dorset Gardens.

Over at Jubilee Square, a line-up of trans and non-binary speakers spoke to the urgent need for change, their words moving the crowd and getting the march off to an energised start. And at the heart of it in the evening the Corn Exchange hosted a huge packed fundraiser and was epicentre of the evening’s celebrations.

The crowds had an overwhelming sense of joy and liberation. Smiling faces, laughter, and countless moments of connection and solidarity. Trans and non-binary individuals of all ages proudly displayed their true selves, for

some – the first time in a public setting.

The love and support from allies was palpable, creating a safe space where everyone could be unapologetically themselves. With people from across the UK and Europe, people from Australia, Canada, and South America taking part in this affirming event.

The weather celebrated along with the attendees. The pleasant conditions added to the festival atmosphere, as people spilled out of venues and into the streets, turning the entire city centre into one giant party. Sunset saw a huge pink bow across the city, as a blessing on this hugely successful day.

It’s worth noting that Trans Pride Brighton is more than just a one-day event.

The organisers, a dedicated group of volunteers, work tirelessly throughout the year to create this inclusive and empowering space. Their efforts showcase what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared vision and unwavering commitment.

The success of Trans Pride Brighton 2024 is testament to the hard work and passion of these volunteers. From securing permits and coordinating with

local businesses to arranging speakers and ensuring safety measures were in place, every detail was meticulously planned. The result was an event that ran smoothly from start to finish, allowing attendees to focus on what really mattered – celebrating their identities and advocating for their rights. Trans Pride is a model of accessibility and inclusion, keeping these principals at the heart of all it does.

As the sun began to set on this remarkable day, the energy showed no signs of waning. The streets of Brighton remained alive with the spirit of pride and defiance and the chants of “Trans rights now!” continued to echo through the night.

“Trans Pride Brighton 2024 was more than just a celebration – it was a powerful statement of existence, resilience and hope.”

Trans Pride Brighton 2024 was more than just a celebration – it was a powerful statement of existence, resilience, and hope. In a world where trans rights are often under threat, where discrimination and violence against the trans community persist, events like this serve as a crucial reminder of the strength and beauty of the trans and non-binary community.

The overwhelming turnout, the passionate displays of solidarity, and the joyous atmosphere all point to a community that is not just surviving, but thriving. It’s a community that refuses to be silenced or pushed into the shadows, one that stands proud and demands to be seen, heard, and respected.

There was a sense of optimism for the future. The success of Trans Pride Brighton 2024 shows that change is possible, that acceptance is growing, and that the fight for trans rights is gaining momentum

DAME GOOD LEGACY

Brighton Family Panto announces new Dame casting for Sleeping Beauty in tribute to the late Jason Sutton aka Brighton drag legend, Miss Jason

) Brighton Family Panto has announced a new Dame casting for Sleeping Beauty in tribute to the late Jason Sutton aka Brighton drag legend Miss Jason. Panto producer David Hill will be taking over the Dame role in this year’s production at The DoubleTree

Casting this key role has given David sleepless nights, so when the panto production team suggested he do it, it took little persuasion.

Jason Sutton – a Brighton drag queen legend known as Miss Jason – died in April aged 56. Last Christmas, he played one of the wicked step-sisters in the Brighton Family Panto.

David, a former Brighton & Hove Pride chairman, said: “Jason Sutton was a remarkable talent whose generosity, support, kindness and sheer brilliance on stage made him a beloved part of our company.

“He was a pure joy to have in our cast and his absence will be deeply felt in this year’s production of Sleeping Beauty

“However, we are committed to honouring his memory by ensuring the show must go on as he would have wished, and I hope I can do him justice.

“This year’s panto will be a heartfelt tribute to Jason, celebrating his extraordinary character on stage for audiences and colleagues alike.”

David, who will be playing Dame Nurse Nelly in this year’s production, brings his rich experience to the Magic Beans Theatre, having portrayed an Ugly Sister for six years and produced the highly successful Brighton Family Panto for another six years.

Director Jordan Langford said: “David’s dedication to his craft and creative understanding of what audiences love about panto make him the perfect choice to carry on Jason’s legacy.”

“[Jason Sutton] was a pure joy to have in our cast and his absence will be deeply felt in this year’s production of Sleeping Beauty.”

Sleeping Beauty is taking place at The DoubleTree by Hilton Brighton Metropole between December 19 and December 30. There are 22 performances with two adult only shows, and tickets are already selling fast.
