Shoulder to shoulder with community groups at Pride

) Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus (BrightonGMC) stood shoulder to shoulder with other community groups against the elements on Saturday, August 5 for the Brighton & Hove Pride Community Parade

BrightonGMC’s parade float took to heart the Pride organisers’ call: Dare to be Different. Using the pink triangle and black text stylings of the campaign to abolish Section 28, the float celebrated 20 years since the law change which legalised being different in UK education.

For 15 years, this vindictive and disabling law banned local authorities and schools from ‘promoting’ homosexuality. Introduced by Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government in 1988, Section 28 also banned schools and councils from “teaching the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship,” and from publishing any material which promoted homosexuality.

BrightonGMC members include many current or past teachers, who can now be positive and diverse role models in schools. They’re also able to give LGBTQ+ students appropriate support and relationships education. This is something that the hostile educational environment of Section 28 denied to a whole generation and which is now being replicated by ‘Don’t say gay‘ laws elsewhere.

Thirty-seven chorus members individually styled in pink and black costumes sang out against Storm Antoni’s equally punishing weather on Saturday, celebrating queer lives and identities and bringing carnival energy and smiles to spectators lining the parade route. While numbers were a fraction of the usual crowds, those who overcame both the elements and the rail company’s train cancellations were not disappointed.

A week earlier, the chorus had opened the Pride celebrations with their show OUT!. This

heartwarming coming out tale about an inner storm of thoughts and emotions was performed to packed audiences and raised funds for fellow LGBTQ+ charity akt. And as this year’s queer ‘Christmas’ begins to fade into memory, BrightonGMC now turn their attention to their winter season and Christmas show Sing-deralla at Brighton Dome on Saturday, December 2.

BrightonGMC always welcomes new members and their next taster evening is on Tuesday, September 12. Anyone wondering about adding their voice to the country’s largest gay men’s chorus outside London is welcome to attend and try it for themselves! Simply contact membership@brightongmc.org for more details. As a community chorus, there’s no audition and the chorus director will help you find the right section for your voice. You’ll

be paired with an experienced member as a buddy for the evening, get the feel for a typical rehearsal and find out what the chorus’s three ‘S’es – singing, socialising and support – are all about.

While Pride may come but once a year, the support that community groups offer to help LGBTQ+ people live our everyday lives continues year round. This is often through a combination of the networks, skills, talents and sense of belonging which are nurtured by groups such as BrightonGMC. They form a vital part of the community space which helps people from all backgrounds and of all identities to flourish.

David Maplesden, who’d travelled from the US with his partner Floyd, and was on the Pride march in July 1973, described it as “the event of a lifetime.”

PIONEERS AT PRIDE

Sussex Gay Liberation Front returned to the heart of LGBTQ+ communities at Brighton & Hove Pride last month.

) Brighton & Hove Pride in 2023 was certainly memorable, and not just for the atrocious weather. The first ‘Gay Pride’ here took place in 1973, organised by the Sussex Gay Liberation Front. Fifty years later, members of the group were at the front of the Pride parade and lead it through the city to Preston Park.

When people gather on Hove Lawns before the parade takes off, it is usually a joyous occasion full of laughter and squeals of excitement. Unfortunately, this year the squeals were in response to the unwelcome cold wind and lashing rain. Despite the weather and lack of trains on the day, the Sussex GLF veterans assembled having travelled from as far as America, Yorkshire, London and Sussex to be there.

“A day I’ll always remember!”

Two local charities, Pedal People and Cycling Without Age, provided the transport for the group: trishaws or reverse cycle rickshaws with the passengers at the front. As Elly Hargreave from Pedal People said: “Our cycles put people literally front and centre back into the heart of their communities.”

Thankfully there were free rain ponchos and some dedicated Pride goers doing their best to keep spirits up. The Sussex GLF are hardy souls and they waited patiently for the parade to move off. Everyone was grateful when it started about 15 minutes before time.

Once the parade turned up West Street there was some protection from the weather. We

were greeted with smiles, waves, and applause from the crowds as we snaked our way through the streets. Once the parade reached the park, the veterans were shown into a blue tented booth facing the main stage set aside for them by the Pride organisers. This was a godsend for keeping out of the wind and rain which returned on and off throughout the afternoon. “An incredible experience.”

The Sussex GLF was formed in 1971 and lasted for about five years. They started Pride in 1973 and set up Gay Switchboard in 1975. Apart from a couple of boyfriends, everyone in the trishaws were involved with the group at some point. I won’t name names, but I know

Di Monteath-Wilson, who was the first chair of the group, said: “It was an incredible experience, and I couldn’t believe the gratitude expressed by so many people, overwhelming. The VIP hospitality was also amazing.”

Second chair of the group, Gail Smith, described it as “an incredible event. Both exciting and humbling“, as well as “a day I’ll always remember!”

Despite the reduced turnout caused by challenging weather and transport issues, Brighton & Hove definitely showed up to commemorate and thank the queer pioneers of the Sussex GLF for their brave actions in the 1970s.

Rain or shine, Brighton & Hove Pride was brash, beautiful and brilliant!

) Brighton & Hove came together on Saturday, August 5 for Brighton & Hove Pride, which marked 50 years since the first ‘Gay Pride march’ in the city.

Despite terrible weather courtesy of Storm Antoni, the city came alive to celebrate and Dare to Be Different. Like every year, community groups, charities, LGBTQ+ choirs – including Actually Gay Men’s Chorus and Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus – and services –including Sussex Police and East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service – took part in the parade which snaked its way from Hove to Preston Park for We Are FABULOSO featuring Mae Muller, Black Eyed Peas and Dylan on the Main Stage.

Brighton & Hove Pride is a fundraiser for the Brighton Rainbow Fund, which is the central hub for fundraising within Brighton & Hove’s LGBTQ+ communities, and distributes grants to local projects which benefit, and make a difference, to the lives of hundreds of individuals within those communities.

) “Following a challenging year for Brighton & Hove Pride, we were incredibly proud to see the LGBTQ+ community, our allies and the amazing people of Brighton & Hove come out in force to celebrate and enjoy a safe and happy Pride.

“Sadly, initial figures show, due to the well publicised transport disruptions and last minute extreme weather forecasts, attendance across our events was down by 50%.

“Whilst feeling incredibly grateful to the support of our city and multi agency partners that help make the event happen, there is no denying the impact of not having rail transport into our city, especially when the weather deteriorated. We’ll certainly have to work hard to overcome the significant challenges in delivering Pride 2024.”
