SUMMER DAZE

June 2013

Hello Fellow Fly Fishing Enthusiasts! As summer is coming, our schedules are filling up quickly. I remind everyone to please check the Wyoming Flycaster’s Club Facebook page for important announcements of fishing outings and other activities. June 1, is free fishing day across the state and the club is helping at Yesness Park. Please plan on coming out to help increase our young fishers. This is a great way to introduce kids to this great sport and help build conservationists at a young age. June 22, is the club’s roadside clean up. We will meet at 9:00 am in the Sutherlands parking lot. We will do as much as we can and end about 11:30. Please help us keep our highways Clean. Platte River Revival is planning on their river clean up on September 21. This is another really fun day with lunch provided to the volunteers. There are many ways to help, please put this in your calendar so you can help out. We are beginning to plan out Ten Sleep outing. Dates are August 2nd - 4th. Please let us know if you are interested. More information, coming soon. This is a fun weekend with club members. We fish, we play, we cook, and eat. It’s a great way to meet new people or catch up. Please look for a firm date soon. We have a new project we are trying to get a committee for, an access on the Platte where the new bypass is being built. Please contact Spencer if you are inter-

President’s letter ested in helping with this awesome endeavor. Summer is a great time to go for your CuttSlam. It is catching the four different kinds of native cutthroat in Wyoming. More information can be found on the Game and Fish website or talk to a member. You can make it even more challenging by using the same fly, going to the native drainage, and so on. Make your self a goal this summer and go for it. I don’t have much as far as an inspiring thought, so I thought a quote might be in order… “Like many fly fishermen in western Montana where the summer days are almost Arctic in length, I often do not start fishing until the cool of the evening. Then in the Arctic half-light of the canyon, all existence fades to a being with my soul and memories and the sounds of the Big Blackfoot River and a four-count rhythm and the hope that a fish will rise. A River Runs Through It and Other Stories Tight lines and Happy Fishing!

Mission Statement:

The mission of the Wyoming Fly Casters is to promote and enhance the sport of fly fishing and the conservation of fish and their habitat.

Description:

The Wyoming Fly Casters club was formed in 1974. The membership currently consists of approximately 160 members. The WFC was organized by a group of dedicated fly fishermen and since the club’s inception the Wyoming Fly Casters have strived to further the sport of fly fishing through conservation and education. Conservation of our water resources is one of our primary goals and in cooperation with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department we have and will continue to carry out worthwhile projects for the benefit of Wyoming fisheries. In addition to conserving Wyoming’s water resources we encourage conserving the fish themselves. A fish safely released today will live to give sport to others.

Fly tying fun for all at Ft. Caspar Academy Fly tying has recently become a popular addition to the extra-curricular program at Fort Caspar Academy. WFC member and NCHS teacher Carl Myers teaches the class, which focuses on introducing K-5 students to the fun and reward of tying flies. The club loans vices from N.C.'s P.E. department, courtesy of WFC member Scott Novotny. For the last class of the year, Scott stopped by to lend his expertise, and was even willing to brave a sudden downpour to retrieve some member sign-up forms from his truck. Thanks for everything Scott! The club is going strong and is scheduled to continue next year. Any members interested in donating time, materials, or tools can contact Carl Myers at carl_myers@natronaschools.org.

wishing Herb Waterman tight lines again soon.

When you’re smiling... Nothing can bring a smile to your face like a nice catch. WFC’s own, Joe Meyer is proof of that. Joe and Spencer Amend often go out together and try their luck on our local waters. When they have a good day (that’s just about every time) they’ll send some pictures for the newsletter. It was from one of these previous trips that Spencer sent in a picture of Joe and his catch. Joe’s expression looked as though he was holding the last fish on earth. Very, very sad indeed. Members know that no one enjoys fishing more than Joe... except the fish he catches. Ha! So we naturally kidded Joe about not smiling. As you can see our teasing had just the right effect. Love to see that big smile again Joe!

Secretary’s Report May 15, 2013 Members Present: Kelly Kukes, Lee Tschetter, Matt Stanton, Spencer Amend, Lee Wilson, Cheryl Alexander, George Axlund, Chris McAtee, Derrick Diet, and Jim Johnson. Members Absent: Joe Meyers and Bob Fischer. Guests: Gene Theriault, Bruce Lessig, Laton Jones, and Al Gettings. Call to Order: 7:01 p.m. Guest Gene Theriault—There is a potential highway access point off of highway 257 that would be a nice river access. We would need to see who owns the property near the access. Gene has already been in contact with Angela Emery with the Platte River parkway, and they are in favor of adding the access. Mark at the Platte River Fly Shop might be a possible contact. Spencer is in favor of looking into making the river access point a Flycasters project. The location is near the intersection of highways 2026 and 220, near the Platte River Fly Shop. We will look into forming a committee that will be in charge of the project, if the club is in favor of pursuing the access. The Treasurer’s report was presented and includes figures for both March and April. Report was accepted. The banquet earnings were discussed (report can be found in the May issue of the Backcast). We are still looking for an editor for the Backcast. Peg’s last Backcast will be at the end of the summer, so if there is anyone that is interested and would be willing to take over the Backcast, it would be greatly appreciated. Guest Al Gettings and Laton Jones – Laton is an Eagle Scout whose final project is to plan and lead the improvements at the Wyoming Flycasters Memorial Access at Speas. Laton is working in conjunction with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. Improvements will include handicap fishing access points, pathway along the river, erosion control, installation of benches, and a new memorial. A full explanation of the improvements is available upon request (see a board member for details). We also discussed the possibility of adding a vault toilet for people to use while out at Speas. There are currently no plans for a toilet to be installed due to funding and maintenance issues, but it will be discussed further at a later date. If anyone is interested in volunteering to help Laton complete the project, contact Al Gettings with the Game and Fish Department. Spencer discussed the fact that the Speas access point has been very littered lately. The access is becoming more and more popular and the general public has been using the access. People are leaving trash behind when they use it. The Game and Fish Dept. has no plans to add a trash barrel, as it will encourage even more trash in the area. The current plan is for every member of the Flycasters to bring trash bags when you go out, and pick up trash if you see it. We are looking for volunteers for the Free Fishing day at Yessness Pond. There was a sign-up sheet passed around at the last meeting. If anyone is interested that did not sign the volunteer sheet, contact Scott Novotny. Healing Waters report- Derrick reported that the partnership between the Flycasters and Healing Waters has been working very well, and several of the veterans who are participating have joined the Flycasters. Meeting Adjourned at 8:08 p.m. Cheryl Alexander ☺
